Celtics at Hawks, AKA For Some Reason Hawks Are Really, Really Up For This

So why is it that the Hawks seem to get up for the Celtics more than any of the other members of the East Elite Tri-Council?

Well, when you consider that the Celtics boast three stars, won a championship in 2008 and owned the Hawks until this season, the real question is: Why wouldn’t the Hawks bring a little something extra against the C’s?

“We know we have to play on a totally different level against that team,” J.J. said. “They’ve got so many threats you can’t have no letdowns.”

If you are so inclined–and I know some of you are–you could take all the things that theoretically are working for the Hawks tonight and turn them around into signs of danger:

1. There’s that 3-0 record against Boston this season. That means the Hawks either a) have Boston’s number or b) can expect the Celtics, with prideful KG back, to do everything in their power to avoid their first four-game season sweep by the Hawks since ‘95-’96.

2. The Celtics left their energy in Orlando, where they blew a 16-point lead last night. That means the Celtics either a) will be too spent to do battle with the Hawks even if they really, really want this one especially since KG is still gimpy or b) will re-focus behind KG, who is ticked about giving up a game-winning layup to Rashard Lewis.. From the Boston Globe:

“I’ve got to be better. I told the guys it was on me and I’ve got to be better defensively. I’ll remember it, it fuels me, it will motivate me, so I’m better [tonight]’.’

Or maybe none of that plays a factor and the Hawks really are just better than the Celtics right now. Woody doesn’t think so.

“I still think they are the best team in the East,” he said.

– Woody said Al Horford , who got six stitches for a gash on his left thumb Monday at Houston, never complained about the injury that night or during the shootaround at San Antonio on Wednesday. Before the Hawks played the Spurs, Horford said he had trouble dribbling with his left hand but that’s about it.

Today, though, Horford acknowledged that when he returned to the game at Houston the thumb was “numb, I couldn’t really feel it” and “it was really bothering me” vs. the Spurs.

“Today, it feels a whole lot better,” Horford said. “I’ll be good to go tonight.”

Though he never used the thumb as an excuse, the injury might explain Horford’s 2-for-10 shooting against the Spurs. He still managed to get 10 rebounds vs. Houston and nine vs. San Antonio.

– The Hawks must win to keep alive Woody’s chances of joining Al and J.J. in Dallas for All-Star game. If the Celtics win tonight, the Hawks won’t surpass them for second place in the East by the end of Sunday.

– Talk amongst yourselves, Hawks fans.

Hawks up, and Jamal has to get a breather. Would have preffered Teague coming in rather than Bibby, though.

why do people show so little appreciation or JJ??

why must it be a Crawford is better than JJ conversation at all??

hasn’t JJ proven in his career that his number FAR exceed Crawford’s??

they are completely different types of players, there is no comparison beyond the fact that both play the SG position and can work as PG as well…

Jeeesus… On the defensive end Crawford is most of the time appalling and on offence is much more prone to dry spells…

JJ is one of the top 3 SG in the league and one of the most balanced players… he is averaging almost a 20-5-5 and people complain when is not at his best… for crying out loud…

let’s hope that Crawford can keep this up OR preferably that the offence starts to flow with more ball movement…

if Crawford hits a dry spell and we are not clicking with all cylinders the 12pts can be gone in no time… specially with Pierce playing so well…

Although I think BOS legs will only get worse as the game goes on…

When people try and bring up Crawfords defense what are they really talking about because for us he hasnt been nearly as bad as everyone claimed at worst hes been average.

Pretty much every negative rep that Crawford had when he showed up has been extremely over exaggerated its time to judge him on what we see now not what we heard someone say he did before he got here

Scrap that talk about Jamal’s defence. He has bought into the system and is vastly improved. Jamal is even blocking shots now! He gets some lapses now and then, but overall, I think he is doing great.

I figured the Celtics would come in looking to gain some measure of revenge. And our Hawks have stomped that notion FLAT.

Josh is showing why he would be a good reserve selection (and why KG should sit this one out). Al Horford is showing why he IS a selection.

Jamal Crawford needs another nickname: “Celtic Nightmare.”

Glenn Davis just lost his nickname of “Big Baby”. That title has been bestowed fully upon Kendrick Perkins, who has never committed a foul in his life, and always gets hacked when he is shooting. OH, and he never commits a traveling violation either….

How about that block by Teague?

How about the effort and solidarity of our second unit?

Woody with some brilliant substitution moves. Yeah, I said it.

When you sign up to be “the big dog”, and get paid like that, you are open for criticism when you “dog it” on defense and fail to set an example.

Oh, and 8 shot attempts with ZERO assists says a little something too.

Nire, do you ever see me being critical when he’s playing well and sharing the ball? No, you do not, unless it’s for defensive effort.

Big Ray

Poor JJ. He’s playing like that kid on the playground who just wants to be noticed, and counted among the popular group. Most of his moves have been solid, beautiful even. But nearly every shot attempt is short. It’s just not his night, although the game is only halfway over.

I won’t count him out, though. I wouldn’t talk too much noise about him. As bad as he looks tonight, I haven’t forgotten the guy who dropped 31 on the Spurs two nights ago…..

I’m lookin’ for JJ to either heat up and make that shooting percentage look better, or play some solid “D” and collect some assists.

Of course, that seems to be all Jamal right now. Damn, what a great pickup by Sund….

Sautee,

All OK to say it that way, however, we need JJ to get going because we cannot expect Crawford to keep going like this… he might, but he might not as well.

Also, JJ was fouled already 2 or 3 times while driving. He simply can’t buy a damn call.

Should have JJ given the last shot to Crawford? Yes, I agree, however, don’t try to read between the lines anything negative about it: he is trying to shake his bad mojo…

Many of JJ’s shots were pretty good but had weird bounces off the rim. He has not been lucky.

Nire ,

Not to exacerbate the situation, but it seems that several people have taken note of JJ’s play this first half. I’m not complaining because he’s not causing us problems. If he plays this way in the second half….well, there won’t be much defense for that. However, I expect he’ll get into a decent rhythm and finish out the game well. Hopefully we won’t need it, but I dang sure ain’t gonna turn it down if we do!

BONE ,

You got a point there….

Big Ray

vava ,

Agreed, we do need JJ to play well. I do however, have quite an appreciation for Crawford, who helps us to not only survive, but succeed when JJ is having a game like this. I agree with Sautee….let Jamal have that last shot. Why would you be trying to regain your mojo in the last few seconds of the first half? More productive if you try it at the beginning of the second half. Just my view, though. I ain’t Joe….
