Houston–The Hawks haven’t won at Houston since Feb. 25, 1999. That’s 10 straight losses. That’s pre-T-Mac and post-T-Mac. That’s with Lenny, Lon, Terry and Woody coaching the Hawks. And while this would seem to be the year for the Hawks to end the streak, with both T-Mac and Yao Ming sidelined and a considerable advantage in talent, remember the Hawks needed that Smoove tip dunk and Marvin’s 29 points to beat Houston at Philips back during their red-hot November.
The Rockets are a hard team to figure on paper. You look at their roster and there is nothing to excite you except Aaron Brooks and possibly super sixth man Carl Landry. You look deeper into the Rockets’ numbers and most are middle-of-the-pack–they share the ball fairly well and they are pretty good on the offensive boards but that’s about it. Yet they have managed to stay competitive by playing with effort and energy.
Except lately the Rockets haven’t always had good effort and energy (“This is the NBA, man”). Their six losses in 10 January games include a home defeat to the Bulls on Saturday, which came the night after they won at San Antonio. So you get a Houston Chronicle headline that reads “Rockets baffled by lack of intensity in loss to Bulls” and quotes like this one from Shane Battier:
“Our team has been very strange in respect to when you think you know, or when we have it all figured out, we lay a clunker down. And when you write us off, we come out with a great performance like (Friday) in San Antonio. I don’t have an explanation — it’s one of the most bizarre things I’ve witnessed in my nine-year career.”
So maybe the Hawks catch the Rockets on one of their weird nights. Perhaps the Hawks’ offense clicks like it did Friday vs. Charlotte, which takes the same hard-nosed approach as Houston but has better talent. And maybe, just maybe, the Hawks can finally win at Houston.
– Talk amongst yourselves, Hawks fans.

doc, you out there? A chance to see our favorite Hawks head coach candidate from around 2006-07 in Rick Adelman tonight. He has done a stellar job and clearly won the battle with T-Mac a few weeks back. If I were a FA this summer (I think that Houston will have cap room with McGrady coming off the books) I would be thrilled to play with the Rockets. They seem to have great team chemistry and a coach who can change based on his personnel. I’m looking forward to the game tonight. I’d love to see the Hawks win with solid 4th quarter execution.

“You wonder if Crittenton will get picked up by another team when his contract expires. And given his run-in with Arenas, is he good enough for a team to sign and develop?”
Off what he’s shown me herein D.C., I think he’s got game. I’d give him a shot. His record is clean, unlike ARENAS who had a prior gun conviction in CALIFORNIA.

this is gonna be a game.look for woody to pull out all stops and play a 6-7 man rotation..
look for hawks to be down early, often, and make it a game by keeping the defecit they are in under 10 midway thru qtr #2..
then, make a small push before halftime before succumbing to houston and its energetic team early to mid 3rd qtr..
then as always, make a small dent in the rockets lead by bringing it down between 11-14 points before losing it all and woody taking the starters who will all play between 33-42 mins tonite…
look for the hawks to lose this one in hawks fashion,tonite..

Hawks offense looking far more efficient when two things are present:
1. When we’re going inside to Josh and Al.
2. When Bibby is in the game….love him or hate him, he promotes good ball control and ball movement. He’s not good on defense (particularly against quick guards), but the aforementioned things are invaluable. Sorry, but with Teague being a sparingly played rookie pg, Bibby is our only real point guard. Hate to break it to anybody, but Crawford ain’t, and never has been a pg.

Rockets will adjust in the second half, if an adjustment can be made. Hawks have to come with the same fire, stick with what’s working, and continue to impose their will. I think those end of quarter iso plays are as much for defensive purposes as offensive… either to deny the opposing team another possession or in the case of the 2nd half, to deny them time for a quality possession. Of course, that assumes that we don;t foul on the rebound. Running a standard play (yes, the Hawks have other plays other than ISO) may not milk the clock appropriately. Of course, just because Joe/Jamal goes to the Iso at the end of the quarter, doesn’t mean that the other 4 need to stand around and watch.
Does anyone think that if Childress were on the team, that he would be standing in cement during iso plays? Doubtful, dude constantly moved and often found himself around the basket for easy buckets. Didn’t he shoot like 55% in his last season or two with the Hawks? That was due to his movement without the ball.

Those are what we need from Marvin. Make those 3s when the opportunity presents itself.
Al with 4 fouls. And ZaZa with 0 points. No production from the center position tonight. Good thing Marvin stepped it up, and Josh is giving us a great game.
See, why does JJ do that? Hawks will look good moving the ball, and then for no reason, JJ runs an ISO.

Heh. Josh Smith is having a hell of a night. But uh, no…we’re talking about ISO Joe.
Joe started off hot, then cooled out a bit. Since then, he’s been passing pretty well, and I’m surprised he only has 2 assists. Nice to see Woody let this offense run itself. He has them playing the kind of “D” he wants, and it’s working. Well, now that we’re not switching as much and playing the BALL, instead of the PLAYERS.

Sautee, you and I both know that Adelman is in a no-lose situation this year. With Yao and McGrady out, he would be a fool NOT to play his rookies. He doesn’t have the luxury of being selective. Why is it so bad that the Hawks are so deep that the #19 pick can’t find consistent minutes? The same is true for Philly with their draft pick (chosen hogher) and Henderson in Charlotte. I just don’t see how Woody needs to apologize for employing a different strategy against a coach that he just swept.

No, I wouldn’t trade the Hawks season for the Rockets season.
No way would we do this well with so many injuries. Imagine us losing Joe Johnson and either Josh Smith or Al Horford. Would we be sitting at 5th in our conference? Would we even have a winning record? Would Woody get as much out of the rest of his team as Adelman has gotten out of HIS? Or would there be a built in alibi, and suddenly the depth that keeps a rookie on the bench gets conveniently swept under the rug, even as claims are made that Sund hasn’t gotten Woody enough talent (or whatever other finger-pointing would come forth)?
I don’t want Woody to apologize for anything. I’m glad we’re not experiencing the injuries Houston is. I like that we’re winning. I’ll leave it at that.

MC, tell Woody that the game has changed. Drop to the 8/9 position and move up in players in the top 100. Road wins in Texas are pointless unless there is universal agreement on minute distribution.

Hey northcyde, want to ask u a ? I think that if an alien was dropped into atl to read our (Hawks fans) blog, he/she/it would think we are 14-29 rather than 29-14. The angst shown by fellow bloggers never ceases to amaze me. I have a theory, and want ur opinion on it, that it’s not the play per se of the Hawks, but the uncertainty and ?’s surrounding the franchise in general. Will we be able to re-sign JJ ? Will we be able to re- sign Jamal next yr and do we have to pick which one we keep ? Can we get Al locked into a long term deal next yr ? The constant harping over the minutes of Bibby/Teague ? Was locking Marvin into a long term deal at that price a prudent move ? Should Zsa Zsa be used as trade bait if RandMo conti ues to develope ? Should Woody be locked in and if so for how long ? Will Sund stay or leave for a more glamorous gig should one become a available?and most importantly (the real heart of all Hawks fans worries) will the ASG screw things up with their “cash strapped, splintered, and short sighted view of things” mentality just as we are reaching elite status. I think that if you look at the complaints “agenda driven as they can be” on this blog, they come back to the central point that everyone knows that we are really close to being elite and they don’t want the ASG to mess it up with one or two bad decisions. With the right moves this coming offseason and next, we can be elite for a long time. With the wrong ones, it will be right back to mediocrity. So I think iso Joe complaints, fire Woody, and Teague minutes complaints are just symptoms of a deeper angst. Whatta ya think northcyde or anyone else for that matter.

It seems to me that the second team Hawk players need more coaching in how to protect an 11 point lead. Another minute or so on the game clock and they might have blown the game. The book says that when you are ahead by double digits that the opposing team has to foul the lead team to take a chance on the leading team missing the free thows so that the trailing team gets more chances to score and preserve more clocktime. Just the opposite happened in Houston last night, the Hawks fouled Houston several times, they hit their foul shots, only to have the Hawks foul them again to stop the game clock. Instead of being ahead by 15 or more points, the Hawks limped out of the arena with a 7 point win. I think the second team needs to read that book again, the coach needs to read it out loud to them so he too remembers to call timeout to steady the ship and thn practice ball movement and ball handling to preserve a lead.
