Greetings, all-
Hope you are doing well. Got some links, one of which will lead me to a question.
First, a hoopsworld.com column touting big things from the Hawks next season.
“(T)he Hawks need to stay together for another year, when they’ll likely be atop the East and have a legitimate shot at the NBA championship.”
A must-read for any Hawks fan. Slam writer Lang Whitaker got virtually unlimited access to the Hawks on their road trip to Dallas in early December. There’s some great stuff in here.
Dime magazine says that Josh Smith is one of the top five athletes in the NBA.
The Arizona Republic’s Paul Coro weighs in on the Suns as they near the halfway point of the season.
Does this sound familiar?
“The only difference I can see is that we were hungrier at the start of the year,” Steve Nash said. “We left nothing to chance. We came out and played hard and were rewarded for it. I don’t feel like we’ve had the same attention to detail and hunger. We’ve got to get back to being a little bit more desperate.”
Lastly, ESPN’s Playoff Odds predictor projects the Hawks to go 52-30 for the season, which would be a fourth-place finish in the East, behind Cleveland (60-22), Boston (54-28) and Orlando (53-29). (Which, if that turned out to be the case, would be a pretty entertaining finish.
With the Hawks at 25-13 right now, that means a 27-17 finish. I’m wondering if you all would take that right now if offered. Here’s what I think. I think the Hawks are kind of like the Suns. They started out hot (11-2) and have since gone 14-11. I think the start maybe gave a false sense of how good this team was. The thing with having such a strong stretch to open the season is that it’s so much more obvious and makes more of an impression than if you go 11-2 in the middle of the season. It probably led us to think they were capable of a little more than we’d originally thought.
I’m now going to wow you with some math. To go 25-13 basically means you’re winning two out of three. If the Hawks had done that since the start of the season, winning 3, losing two, winning four, losing two, rather than getting wins in bigger chunks, I wonder if we would feel differently about the Hawks than we do. I imagine 52-30 would look a lot more appealing than I bet it does to a lot of you right now.
But I’d guess the reality of the NBA is that’s probably how most teams will get to 52 wins: Get hot, go cold, tread water, get hot again.
You could certainly say that the fact that the Hawks can go 11-2 or win six in a row, beat Dallas in Dallas, go 3-0 against Boston, etc. says something about the team’s ceiling, and that’s why losing four in a row is intolerable. To that, I’d argue that Toronto just won eight of nine. Indiana won five in a row, beating Boston in the process, in November. Perhaps a hot stretch like that is more attainable than maybe we think.
But, anyway, looking forward, here’s the thing about finishing 27-13. If the Hawks are to finish with 52 wins, that means that, if they rip off a five- or six-game winning streak, it likely means they’ll also flop through a three-game losing streak here and there, or a stretch whey go W-L-W-L-W-L. But at the end of the season, they’d end up at 52 wins, which is no small accomplishment, obviously.
So, I’m wondering, would you take 52-30?
And my other question. I haven’t done this in awhile, and I think I’ll have time before the game starts to ask questions for you. If you have anything you want asked, let me know. I’ll try to get my four or five favorite questions answered and post answers in the pre-game thread.
Or… if you want to ask them yourselves why, here’s your chance. The Hawks are holding their annual “Full Court Fest” event January 23. As the press release says:
Guests will have the opportunity to rub elbows with the entire roster of Hawks players and coaches, as well as team legends and executives, while playing a variety of casino games, and other interactive elements. In addition to challenging all comers at the gaming tables, Hawks players will be mixing and mingling with guests, signing autographs, and posing for pictures.
It’s Jan. 23 at Ventanas (rooftop of the Park Pavilion Building in downtown). It’s $125 and benefits the Hawks Foundation.
If you can spring for it, I bet a lot of you would enjoy getting to meet the players on the roster. I’ve found them to be a pretty good group of guys. For more information, go to hawks.com.

The vast majority of fans, before the season started, would’ve been estatic with 52 wins.

Before the season started I predicted that the Hawks would win between 50 and 55 games during the regular season. So if I had a chance to say ok I’ll take 52 wins would I accept it? NO WAY JOSE. The reason we follow a team through the season is to enjoy the journey. I want to be able to look back and remember how horrible it was to suffer through a four game losing streak and to enjoy the great start to the season. I want to remember the thrill of beating the Celtics four times in one season and the agony of blowout defeats to the Cavs and Magic before we righted our ship and overcame these teams in future contests. I want to believe that this team will beat the franchise record of 57 wins in one season or be dismayed if they tank in the middle of the year. I want the journey. This journey began five years ago with a 13 win season. Each year has been a step up the ladder. Is this the year that we finally reach the promised land? I don’t know. Personally I doubt this is the year that we will go over the top. At times I fear with the lack of resources from the teams ownership that we will ever see this team go over the top. But I have been watching this team since they moved here in the 1960’s and I want to be able to say I was with them when the ownership was patient enough to stick with a team as it grew and grew and grew into a championship team. Or if it never makes that championship I want to be able to compare it with the 1980’s teams of Dominique and Willis or the 1990’s Smith and Mookie years. I want to see if Teague can match “Fast Eddie” Johnson from an earlier era as the penetrating guard that was the final element in a couple of years to put the team over the top.
I could go on and on and on telling you the reasons why I would not accept 52 wins this year right now. But I think you understand. It is a journey that I do not wish to miss..

“52″ WINS MEANS NOTHING without an nba title. All these other teams are adding titles to their history; Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, etc. and we cant even win won. We have the talent here to do it, the guys just must believe in themselves and trust each other and play for each other cohesively as a team. If the Hawks play together the SKY IS THE LIMIT for this year.

ken , another lifeless article on your part,,the Hawks will be closer to 60 wins than 52.
Do you really ever watch the team?
Why don’t you write a good article about keeping Joe Johnson?

Ken, going into the season I thought 50 wins, in fact I’d go out on a limb here and say that a lot of analyst thought an even 50 win for this squad. So any number of wins between 52-55 wins I can definitely settle for.

I MUS,
If JJ leaves the Hawks, my speculation is that he ends up in Cleveland, but there would be salary cap issues there, and Cleveland doesnt have much for sign and trade.
If JJ does end up in Chicago, we could probably work out a sign and trade with the Bulls. If Wade leaves Miami, I think he would go home to Chicago.
That being said, I think Bosh and Boozer are the 2 biggest names who will change teams. I wont be surprised if everybody else stays put.

52 wins and the 4th seed is acceptable, but it would be a clear indication that the season-to-season progress is slowing considerably.

Ken, I would love to know who do the players think are the team’s best perimeter defenders on the ball.

Anytime you get a 4 seed, without going in the luxury tax arena, you’re doing something good. So I would take that 52 wins IF it meant going into the playoffs with everyone healthy! I’d take the 52 wins and everyone healthy over 58 wins, a third seed, and one starter or main bench player is injured (Zaza, Crawford, even Joe or Mo).

RLP – I hear ya, in that if you could right now accept 52 wins for the Hawks, it’d be like knowing how the movie ends before it even starts. The not knowing is the fun part. Obviously, though, that’s not quite what I was getting after.
Mactown – this goes back to the top of the comments, but how would you use Blatche and Jamison?
EJ – about what Joe Johnson said – he basically said that he appreciated the support the Hawks have, but that it’s not one of the best home-court advantages in the league, and that it was better, but not much better than what he first arrived.
i can’t quibble with what he said, but I don’t think it necessarily means he wants out of Atlanta. I think you’d have a hard time finding someone who thinks that the crowd at Philips is among the best in the league. There were less than 10,000 people there Wednesday. Obviously, there’s a lot of reasons why that’s the case, and we can certainly debate whether or not the Hawks deserve it. But the question posed to him was if the home-court advantage had gotten better, and he answered it.
Najeh – 52 wins would be a smaller improvement than from two years ago to last year. I’d argue, though, that it’s pretty hard to make the jump from 47 wins to 50-plus, harder probably than going from 37 to 47.

Ramon- i saw your post. i think it’ll be hard to get a truthful answer – players can be pretty diplomatic when it comes to teammates – but i’ll see what i can find out.

The Hawks do seem to flop horribly when they have an off game (do other good teams get crushed by 20 or 30 points every few weeks it seems?), but I still think this year it is harder to imagine even the best of teams not being challenged to win 4 out of 7 against Atlanta. Even if Atlanta has typical flops, they have depth that they lacked last year that gives them a greater ability to find a streaking player when others are cold. Jamal Crawford AND Joe Johnson can be a fourth quarter scoring machine when the game is on the line.

AceDawg, I’d rather them get beat by 20, and the starters only play 30 minutes, than to lose by 3 and the starters play 41 minutes.

Ramon-
didn’t get to ask your question of anyone except Woodson. He said Mario West is probably the best on-the-ball defender, but “Joe is right there.” he said something I found interesting, that he said he often puts Johnson on other team’s point guards, even though he’s usually a lot bigger, in part because of his defensive ability, but also because if he gets screened and has to switch to a bigger player, he’s not at a size mismatch.

Ken Thanks for that! After watching this team for half a season, I would hope that means Mario contract would become for the rest of the season instead of 2 10 day contracts!
