Greetings, all-
Thanks for all the love. It really means a lot to have passed muster with you guys. Just a couple notes, and we’ll get to the game.
1) Mario West is going to dress tonight. Zaza Pachulia is at home with flu symptoms, so Mike Woodson won’t have to sit anyone to see what “Greasy,” as he’s known, can do. As you can imagine, West was pretty fired up about getting an opportunity.
2) Mo Evans may not play. His wife is delivering their first child. Woodson didn’t know where things stood when we talked to him, around 5:40.
3) I asked Woodson about playing zone against the Celtics, particularly how much they’ve played it in the past and this year.
“We played (some) zone last year. Probably the year before we played zone a lot. It’s kind of shrunk over the last couple years but two years ago, we played zone a lot. That won us a lot of games. Last year, we played it some. Mainly, we tried to play it in back-to-back games where you kind of, instead of chasing guys a lot, it kind of bought us some time to keep guys strong towards the end of the game. But against the Celtics, our coaches suggested zone and we went with it. It was nice to see because it kind of caught them a little off guard.”
“We’ve played zone a few times this season.”
Is there a particular reason you haven’t used it as much?
“It’s a long season. As the season wears on, we’ll probably start playing some more of it when we get time to practice and really work at it. It’’s easy to do with the guys that have been here, our starters, because they know it. But we did it with Jamal (Crawford) on the floor the other night, and it was pretty good.”
As requested, UGA’s Travis Leslie’s dunk against Kentucky.

Four things I notice right off the bat.
One, I didn’t know I’d miss Mario this much.
Two, Marvin is playing his butt off. Whoever slipped the RedBull in his gatorade needs to do it again.
Three, the ball movement and off-ball movement has been pretty nice.
Four, Woody has gone to the bench early, despite not having a big lead. The bench has responded by extending the lead.

If only Woodson would use his bench (namely Teague) like this against the upper echelon teams. Scrimmaging against the Wizards won’t necessarily prep them for the playoffs. Would be nice to see them get some burn against the Celts, Cavs, Magic, etc. While Joe Smith & other vets off the bench have been in the league long enough to be able to turn it on come playoff time, if Teague is not used in pressure situations it does us no good.
Melvin

Teague makes a series of good plays and what does Woody do, take him out of the game…. Good grief, how does he expect this kid to get experience. What does he gain by putting Bibby back in the game? Bibby is a vet with plenty of game mins under his belt. This would have been a good opportunity for Teague to get extend mins in a game thats still competitive against the other team starters….

As soon as Teague starts showing what he can do on both ends of the court, Woodson takes him out, yet leaves MWest in, and reinserts his beloved MBibby. Of course, West isn’t a threat to Bibby’s starting position. As soon as Bibby comes back in, the DEF drops off and the Wizards make a comeback.
Some of the BS crap Woodson does makes me sick. He doesn’t need to be the HC of this team.

Anyway,
Very nice game by Marvin Williams. Josh nearly got a triple double. It would be a quadruple double if you count the number of whines after a foul call as a statistic. Despite his scoring issues, he had a hell of an effect on the game.
Joe did his thing, and Jamal shined right along with him. Big Al held his own despite foul trouble and limited touches. It was great to see Mario back in the fold and doing his thing.
Teague looked pretty good for the most part. I won’t say anything else, as it tends to start a pi$$ing match about the usual subject….

This game was pathetic, it proved and showed nothing positive….and only that we still need alot more work in many areas before we can think about going deep in the playoffs. Who cares about piling up wins against these sorry bottm half east teams if we look pathetic doing it.

Our combo energizer bunnies (West and JT) did a great job. Joe Smith also added to good bench play.
Marvin has his groove back. A welcome sign of better Hawk play in the future.
Marvin/Jamal = POG
JJ gave a good workman like performance.
Josh had trouble scoring but filled the stat sheet as only Josh can do including key free throws when needed. 6-8. Love the 8 assists from a big.
We missed a lot of wide open shots early and often or this game would have been a blow out. Even with all the missed shots the passing was great. Our 26 assists could have easily ben 35. A good night for passing and team ball movement. Add to that, 7 turn overs. Pretty darn good.

It is his fault. He has accepted all of the perks of being a #2 pick. He was paid like one on his first contract. His second contract was based off of his first contract. He started from day one because he was a #2 pick. He should have worked on his game like a #2 pick should. Childress is playing in Greece right now because Marvin was a # 2 pick. We have not upgraded that position because Marvin was a #2 pick…….. See where I’m going. I don’t commend my kids for being making C’s(average). The Hawks dont have to win every game, and they dont have to win every game pretty. It’s about seeing the necessary coaching ability, offensive and defensive sets, and individual performances needed to win deep in the playoffs.
We’re not going to beat Cleveland or Orlando with Woodson’s inability to use his bench effectively, nothing but ISOs, heavy jump shot reliance, and too many possessions involving Josh Smith trying to crossover people or with his back to the basket in the paint.
We get away with this crap against these sub .500 eastern conference teams MOST of the time, but unless something changes we’re not gonna contend for the east. This is why I say screw these wins against these sorry teams, if they are winning them and still displaying the BS i mentioned previously.

I think we can contend for the East. We’ve owned Boston so far this year, and we can certainly beat Cleveland (should’ve won both games but gave them both away in Q4). Only problem I see is Orlando…we just don’t match up well with them at all. Hopefully they lose in Round 2 and we don’t have to worry about them.

Rod, no I dont see where youre going. Why are you blaming Marvin for all that stuff? If you wanna blame somebody, blame BK, Woodson, Dominique, and co. They’re the ones that picked him. Guess they didn’t like Chills as much as you did. And quit hating on Marvin for getting paid? I guess you think he shoulda tuned the $ down cause he aint worth it huh? Maybe he was drafted too high? Fine. But it is what it is. As long as he’s a Hawk, I’m gonna root for him.

We really need Childress in the spot Mo has now. Mo is pretty much useless for this team. People think he’s a good defender but he really isn’t. I love the guy but he is not productive enough off our “2nd unit.”

terrell barron,
DeAngelo Hall was a Falcon, I never rooted for him for many reasons. I root for the team, I have the right as a fan to dislike a player, even if he plays for my team. Especially if said player is not doing what he is supposed to do to make my team better. As I said before If you want to crown him, then crown him.

Hawks certainly didn’t have their A game tonight. More like a C+ game. But it’s been said before and still true that good teams find a way to win even when they are nowhere near their best. Can’t believe all the Marvin haters aren’t rushing to post their compliments of his game tonight. Oh wait yea I can, as was said earlier “some people are just haters.” so good to see Mario and his explosive legs back out there tonight. Don’t know how anyone could not pull for that guy. He and Teague provided some much needed spark tonight as the 1st unit had some post-Celtic drop off tonight. I’m sure i’ll catch hell for this but I felt Woody did a good job with the substitution tonight. He was working without 2 guys from the 2nd team tonight but went to the bench for considerable minutes in the 1st half and early in the game too. However, in the 2nd half when the issue was still in doubt and Wash. remained in striking distance he kept 1st team plus Jamal in to make sure of the win. I know some will say he should have played the 2nd team as much in the 2nd half but the pressure increases exponentionally when the game is on the line against a team you should beat easily at home. And oh how some on this blog would have roared with anger if we would have lost tonight and woody gave extended min to backups. He did the right thing proving once again he knows his players and he is a far better coach than some, “haters” shall we say, give him credit for being.

I was out of town due to a holiday trip to see my son and his family that was extended due to the death of my father-in-law. So I have missed being able to comment on much that has been submitted so far this year. Here are some observations:
First I agree with all of the others who have thanked Ken S. for the job he had done during his tenure on this blog. A job well done considering how it all came about. Thanks Ken.
I did have a chance to read some in the early part of my absence and at one point there was a lot of discussion concerning the fact that the Hawks record at the end of the year exactly matched the record of last year. Not many were happy about that observation. But what I did not see was that from that point until the end of last year the Hawks overall won lost record was only one game over .500. How many of you think this year’s team will do that poorly this year? I don’t. I think this year’s team is significantly better than last year’s team. I expect better results this year.
Also during this period the Hawks went through their four game losing period. There was much complaining on this blog about that period. No one discussed the fact that one of the recognized “elite” teams in the East went through a similar four game losing skid. Our loses were to another “elite” team and two teams that are not that bad. The Knicks got of to a terrible start this year but are 13-7 over their last 20 games. The other team has a certified superstar and is one spot behind us in the East.
There was also a great deal of discussion about the recent play of the team demonstrating it is folly for those of us who think the Hawks are on the cusp of becoming an elite team. Well don’t look now but the Magic lost tonight and if the Hawks win on Friday night they will be tied for first in the Southeast division.
I think the problem is not that the Hawks have not earned the right to be called an elite team in the division. Instead the problem is that the so-called “elite” in the East have come back toward the Hawks at the same time the Hawks have stepped forward. In other words if the Hawks were playing at this level LAST year they would not be considered approaching elite status because last year all three of the other top teams were winning at a much higher percentage. Here are the differences based on the final percentages last year and the current percentages for this year:
Magic Last year .720 This year .684 Minus .036
Celtics Last year .756 This year .730 Minus .026
Cavaliers Last year .802 This year .750 Minus .052
Hawks Last year .573 This year .658 Plus .085
In other words the Hawks have made progress and the other three have regressed bring them closer to equality.
This season the Hawks started faster than last year. But last year they made a run that caught this year’s pace briefly but they fell backwards. With the visible improvement this year I doubt that many of you feel that they will repeat last year’s pattern. The question then becomes how much improvement they will make.
There was a period when I felt that they had a chance to make the leap into the elite status. Even during the four game losing streak I felt that way. I still feel that way. But I think the chances have diminished based on what I see as the reality for this team. Reading the blogs for the time I was out many of you have pointed to the team’s lack of consistency as being the problem. I agree.
But while I still see immaturity in Josh Smith and lack of forcefulness in Marvin Williams and the need for more help for Al Horford in the post and a tendency for Joe Johnson to overplay one on one basketball and defensive inefficiency on the part of Bibby and inconsistency in Jamal Crawford’s game I realize that every team has issues. Again as some have pointed out on this blog in LA some fans complain about Kobe hogging the ball while the same is true for LeBron in Cleveland.
At this point in the season we simply do not know if the team will suddenly catch fire in the playoffs or be surprised by a team with a superstar who is capable of surprising very good teams if they let their guard down in the first round. Just because you play good during the regular season does not mean that anything is automatic. Ask Dallas whey they play San Fran. Or ask Cleveland when they lost to the Magic last year in the ECF. Or ask the Celtics when injuries did them in when they lost KG.
But isn’t it fun to see how the season plays out?

RLP . . .now you know that logic does not work with the “Woody Whiners”. They need to whine about something.
If it’s not Woody, it’s JJ. If it’s not JJ, it’s Marvin. If it’s not Marvin, it’s Bibby or Smoove. If it’s not any of that, it’s the “we’re not elite” argument ( even though not a single Hawk fan expected us to be elite, before the season started. ).
People are so used to complaining about the Hawks, that it kills them to actually say anything good about them. It’s like a “Pavlov’s Dog” effect around here . . lol. Somebody says the name Woody, and their mouths start to salivate, ready to rip into him ( even during a win ).
Like you, I’m enjoying the hell out of this season. The playoffs are the furthest thing from my mind in mid-January. I’m just sitting back, and watching this team develop and strive to get better each and every game.
We have more than enough quality wins ( and should be wins ) over teams, that let be believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is a very good team. Maybe not championship level, but a very good team nonetheless.
With this group, a good win gets a +1 rating . . while a bad loss gets a -5 rating. And if you win ugly, that’s a -3.
It all equals up to subtle negativity, or being unnecessarly critical ( even though we got a win ).

Samuel,
There was a rumor that Minnesota was willing to trade Al Jefferson for an athletic sidekick. If Minny was interested, would you trade Al Jefferson for Josh Smith?
As for COY, I think Scott Brooks is doing a great job in OKC. This is his first full season as head coach, and the Thunder is 21-17, playing in the tough Western conference, led by #2 pick Kevin Durant (I wonder how Portland feels for taking Oden).

Marvin had a good game last night, and hopefully, he is turning it around. I just wish we could get that kind of performance from him more consistently (especially against other good/elite teams). But looking back, I still think Sund overpaid when he gave him $7.5 mil per.
Although it wasn’t easy, great win for the Hawks last night. Looking forward to the Suns game, because I anticipate a very high scoring game from both teams. I wonder who will Woody sit when ZaZa comes back? RandMo or Collins?

Good win in the end. I think the 2nd unit should be given the W. They made things happen, only to get benched, where they watched the 6 man rotation flop. Good to see the 1st unit figure out how to muddle past a bad Wizards team. Who was it that wanted several Washington pieces? We don’t want any of their players or carma coming our way.
Good to see Mario do his thing. There’s alot of haters already here, but he delivered as I promised. Solid D, great effort & rebounding. He looked alot more assertive on offense when he got the ball. He won’t ever score much, but usually he’s intelligent with his shot selection. His energy sparked the 2nd unit and entire team. I loved the defensive play when he sent Jamison into the fans on the baseline. For those of you discounting his “ill timed rebound attempts” – at least he crashes the glass. He got several key offensive rebounds. 5 boards and points in 5 minutes? That’s a 48 pt & rebound game? How can you argue that? Josh, Al & Marvin barely had 5 boards in a half of play. Rio laid it all out last night, as he will every day!
Another key to the game was Marvin. Another good night for Marvin giving him almost a month of consistent play. Nice to see some plays run specifically for him. Nice to see him in the middle of almost every hustle play our there. I hope he continues to improve. It’s all related to his confidence.
Folks can bash the win. It was a W. Not pretty, but we did manage to pull it out. Fri will be a bigger test.

Isn’t there a commandment that forbid us from coveting our neighbor’s players? isn’t it a basketball sin? Maybe if you cheer for the players you have, on the team you have, you can forget about other players on other teams. Do you walk down the street in your neighbor looking at other guy’s wives and cars wishing they belong to you? Do you have fantasies about them? Why don’t closed your eyes and click your heels twice and go to the other player’s team blog. oh yeah, take the negativity with you.

O’Brien,
Not in a million years: Jefferson is damaged goods (bad knees) and not a very competent nor willing defender (both on the ball and help).
He does have good offensive moves and is a pretty good rebounder, however, our system implies that the bigs have to be very mobile and alert defensively in order for the switching defense to work.
Josh’s manic but enthusiastic all round game is very difficult to replace.
In relation to Marvin, I already mentioned this a few times but I like to repeat it is shooting over 50% over the past 12 games.

a bit slow, but a win.
mario was th eman, crashing the boards, and some really nice defence. hes made a great play that the announcers missed – he was double teaming on the near sideline, then rushed across the paint to the far sideline when the wizards moved the ball quick to the other side….guy was wide open, but Mario spotted him as the pass was made and rushed over to stop an easy look and 3 point basket.
im not worried about him scorring – he isnt on the court for that. we have 4 other guys that can score well, so hes not necessary for offence. However – that was a nice drive he had.
Any of you haters need to remember all of our other guys have played more this year than he has in his 2 year career. hes still a bit raw, but he will be an asset friday night.
also – RLP has some good points – percantages etc. That made me think ….we have virtually shut down the ‘go to player’ of opposing team much of the time we play. the recent skid not withstanding we shut down wade at phillips, and lebron some too (at phillips) and a bunch of others before that…..i hope to see that trend again. its hard to win one one superstar (or nate robinson) gets 40+ against us….i sure hope Woody puts in West in those situations..

Look, Marvin is what he is. Yea he was picked #2. But Joe Smith was picked #1, and who do you think is going to have the better career? Marvin isn’t a let down as a pro. I mean he is still good enough to start for a playoff team. That is FAR from a draft bust. Marvin comes to play every game he plays. And although he’s clumsy, I can honestly say that I see him out there hustling and trying to do what he can. I’ve never seen Marvin have the wrong attitude about a play. You can’t get mad at Marvin because he was picked #2. He didn’t pick himself there. But if the Hawks came and drafted ANYONE of us at #2, knowing over half of you guys aren’t in shape, would you still not accept the contract for 6 mil a year? Marvin gives it his all. I’m happy with that.

Is that why we went 9+ minutes against Cleveland without a basket? If we had scored at all in those minutes we probably would’ve won that game. While he is right about defense, until we start running actual plays on offense and Woodson uses the bench in close games, this team is done in 4 in the 2nd round

This team will lose in the second round of the playoffs (really? what does that have to do with a mid Janurary game against the Wiz?…idiot)
Woody said in an article(that we all read and discussed months ago) that he didn’t care about the offense (really? he was clearly making a point about how he values defense over offense, but go ahead and run with it…. just should have done it when the article actually came out)

I like Woody’s attitude were defense is concerned. We all know defense wins championships, and it’s harder to condition basketball players to play defense every night, than play offense
As Hawks fan we tend to forget the Hawks are one of the top offensive teams in the league. It’s our lapses on defense that causes us to lose games we should win. I am fine with what Woody said. He also said we could score with any body, but we win by playing bette defense.

I surely did not compare them, I put a response to your statement about, because Marvin plays for the Hawks I should support him. I am a Falcon Fan also, and I did not support D. Hall, not because of the reasons you probably would say, but because he did not live up to his hype or his draft status, and fundamentally was not a good corner to me. I could care less about his attitude, and what he did in his private life. Similar to Marvin, he has not lived up to his hype or draft status, and to me is not a fundamentally good basketball player. He actually does not do what he is asked to do, because he was asked by the gm and the coach at the beginning of the year, after the contract was signed to step up his game. He has not done that this year.

For me personally, I like to have an emotional attachment to my team. I enjoy liking them as people not just their stats. I’m not saying I want to be friends with them or anything, but it adds to my enjoyment as a fan to follow them on more than one level. The packers have it in Green Bay. The fans and players love and feed off each other.
Having said that, I really have a strong affinity for this team, not just as players, but as good decent quality young men. No gun fights, no rehab, and no unneeded drama.
There are countless stories about the deep character of these guys. Jamal getting mixed up with the bloods but making it out and becoming a star, Marvin stepping up to pay for his younger siblings college education, Bibby written up in the Wall Street Journal as the anti-Iverson who helps his friends by putting them on payroll, Al’s relationship with his family and community back in the Dominican. The stories go on and on.
Josh can be brash, but deep inside he’s a Momma’s boy and I mean that in a good way. His Mom comes to every game, and you can see the special relationship they have (Not to mention I thought Josh was wearing a wig the first time I saw her).
And of course ZaZa, in it for the long haul. He’s the reason Joe Smith is here. Go ahead with your bashing, and your stat references. I will continue to be a fan the way I know how.

Like I’ve said before, Mario is a nice story and all but calm down people. One poster said we would have two more wins if we had Mario the whole season lolllllll. You cant be serious. The kid hustles and all but he is still a poor ball handler and cant shoot. I’m with JMar as far as hustle that produces something….Mario is the same player he was when he left Ga Tech……. The Nets are trying to trade Josh Boone. He is a big who can block shots and rebound. I wouldnt mind having him on the bench.

The point I wanted to make about the article is simple:
Some don’t give these Hawks the credit they deserve.
Others do.
We have both views very much alive around here, however, my take is simple:
Many are critical of Woody and of the Hawks pointing out some fair and reasonable arguments (myself included), however, they also neglect to acknowledge the merit inherent to our record.
We are not a rich franchise (owners have been losing money every single year) and our roster, although quite good, is not stocked with all stars. At least not yet since Josh and Al may break into the game this year.
Hence, our record and our performance has been very very good and we should enjoy what we have right now, specially since we were 13-69 just a few years ago.
Finally, people complain that we do not win against elite teams… well, guess what: we are 3-0 against Boston, swept Portland, split the series with Denver and gave Cleveland a good run for their money going against 8 guys on the floor.
Orlando is a different matter: we match up badly against them but we should not forget that in the ATL game we were up at the half time before the refs gave a green light to Howard plow through the paint with his elbows to Al’s chest and swallowed the whistle in several drives where JJ was hammered in the third quarter. Just 4 or 5 non calls and a double digit advantage turns into nothing.
Let’s wait and see.

I’m not sure what Stackhouse will be bring, but this team is not losing cause they can’t score.
We lose when we stop bringing it on the defensive end, that why the Mario move makes sense.

It’s interesting to read the negative comments about Mario, because they don’t really apply to his current situation.
#1 Woody loves him! That means he will play! Anybody else you bring in will sit on the bench. cp, that especially applies to bigs!
#2 Our issue has been perimeter defense. See Orlando and NY games. Mario wants to defend!
#3 Our other issue is key rebounds. Mario goes after every rebound likes it’s his last!
No where on that list are there issues with ball handing and shooting. I know Mario can’t really dribble or shoot, but that doesn’t matter in this situation. O. Hunter is a better ball handler and shooter, but he sat on the bench!! Mario will play, which means other guys can rest, but more importantly it means there’s a guy on this team that gets playing time only because of Effort! It will be a wake-up call for Teague and Morris, if they want to play they’re going to have to bring more effort.

Agreed GeeMack.
Like Charles Barkley said,”Any knucklehead can shoot, but it takes brains to play defense.” When Woody said that he doesn’t give a s@#^ about offense, I think he meant that the offense is fine. Which is true since I think we’re close to leading the league in points scored.
Contrary to popular belief, they do run plays. Pretty much every Smoove alley-oop is off a well executed play and Bibby gets a lot of open looks due to plays run for him.
Our Stifling, turnover inducing, switching, choking up the passing lanes, 3 second violation inducing defense is a thing of beauty to watch.
I just remember being in the restroom and hearing a father ask his three year old son “Who’s your favorite hawk”. The little boy answered, “the defense”. Priceless.

Has anyone noticed that Horford is slowly but surely bulking up? He started at 235. Then he was listed at 245 and now he’s 247. He’s put on the extra 12 pounds without affecting his touch or quickness. Which is natural considering he’s doing it properly, slow and gradual. He’s 23 years old. Most men “fill out” at about age 25. If he can get to about 255-260 and maintain his agility and skill that would be key. Why do I mention this?
We like everyone else have problems against Orlando due to Dwight’s physical prowess. Not his skill or smarts, but he just manhandles us. Dwight Howard is 265 lbs. Horford doesn’t have to be just as strong as Dwight. But if he can succeed in not getting pushed around or out-quicked (like Zaza is so often) he can go single coverage and totally change the game against Orlando. He already owns Kendrick Perkins. And Hack a Shaq with Cheesburger Collins, RandMo, and Zaza should do the trick (not to mention Shaq is older than me). This will be the last piece to fall into place for the Hawks to start to overcome and not just contend with the elites.

VALVA74-excellent comments. You’re correct when you say we don’t matchup well with Orlando. However, that can be partially remedied if Woodson possessed enough insight, flexibility, imagination and courage to effectively use the talent on his bench to create better matchups for us, and/or worse matchups for them.
If your starting lineup and style of DEF doesn’t matchup has consistently proven ineffective, why would you continue to stubbornly overplay the same players and use the same DEF? Defensively, JCollins could provide an interesting one on one physical challenge for DHoward, and RMorris and his smooth inside moves could provide an interesting challenge for any of their PF’s. Teague would provide a far superior challenge for JNelson than MBibby, on both ends of the court.
Former GM BKnight put together a very quick, fast, athletic, talented and versatile core of young players, and current GM RSund added depth and experience to the mix. The biggest complaint against Woodson has been his unwillingness, or inability, to use consistent strategy and/or consistently utilize the majority of those aforementioned attributes.
As good as this team has been, in terms of won/loss record and overall achievements, it’s still underachieving, and Woodson, along with his limited halfcourt OFF, are the weak links.

It’s funny how Woody prides himself on defense or label himself as a defensive minded coach when he didn’t play a lick of defense as a player. Woody was known for his nice jumpshot (Is there’s a coincidence that the Hawks have a jump shooting oriented offense). Now that he’s a coach, he has become a defensive guru… Yeah, ok.

I’m not in love with Marvin. I’ve suggested many trades where Marvin would be packing his bags. But I can’t recall the last game that we lost that was because of Marvin’s play directly. The biggest three problems this team has is not Marvin related. Marvin has nothing to do with the fact that no one in the back court can stop the opposing guards from penetrating any time they desire. People say Marvin is just a role player and that is ok. What was the last championship team that didn’t have at least ONE starter who was nothing but a role player? When Boston won, Perkins (and Rondo at the time) was nothing more than a role player. Actually people look at Ray Allen as a member of the big three, but would any of you trade Marvin for Ray? San Antonio has never been more than a bunch of role players surround Duncan, Parker, Ginobli. Finley, Bowen, nor Barry produced more than what Marvin produces now. I get frustrated by somethings from Marvin. However, I realize that if we upgrade the PG play, and the subtract the amount of shot attempts that goes up from the perimeter, the Hawks would be able to compete with anyone night in and night out.

HAWKS fans:
The latest segment of “AS THE WIZARDS TURN.”
“Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas was charged Thursday with felony gun possession, a crime that carries a maximum five years in jail and a fine, authorities said.
The charge was announced Thursday afternoon by the U.S. Attorney’s office for the District.
Arenas’s attorney and prosecutors had been negotiating a plea deal during the day and it was not immediately clear whether the filing of charges was a part of the deal. Court officials said they had been told to prepare to have Arenas in Superior Court on Friday.”
“D.C. and Arlington police searched the home of Washington Wizard Javaris Crittenton Thursday morning looking for a gun he reportedly used in a locker room confrontation with teammate Gilbert Arenas, according to sources familiar with the investigation.
Police did not find the gun at his Arlington home in the 7:15 a.m. search, one of the sources said.”
My prediction. ARENAS is found guilty of a misdemeanor, gets a suspended sentance, has to do more community service than he already is, and pays a heavy fine. The indeterminate NBA suspension is given a limit, another fine, and finally whatever the WIZARDS want to do with him. But he stays. And he plays. That contract is untradable, and not voidable at this point. Nothing less than a felony conviction will suffice for that. Ain’t happenin’. The franchise has to deal with the poison pill that contract represents for the next four and one-half seasons. There is a player option before the 2012-2013 season. Think GIL will exercise it? Me too. 20.5 mill that season.
JAVARIS skins out of the mess with nothing but here-say evidence against him. The brandishing a loaded weapon will not prove out, but CRITTENTON will never wear a WIZARDS uni again. And his 1.45 mill is up at the end of the season.
There’s a very good point guard coming onto the market soon HAWKS fans, if you’re interested. Personally, if I were a GM, I would consider it.

Mario might not even make the team. Some guys get so caught up in his hustle and energy that they don’t realize he doesn’t bring much else to the table. Obrien,
I saw your trade idea. I was at school so I couldn’t post. I really love my Mississippi boys, especially Jefferson and Ellis. My son played AAU with Al since he was 9th Grade. He played against Ellis in high school ball. Outlaw too.
I’ve been straining my brain trying to come up with a way to make something work for Jefferson. I believe he will thrive even more in a warm climate. He’s basically been playing and living in a cold climate since coming into the league.
For the life of me I can’t see it working. I really couldn’t move Josh at this point. Now way. I would trade Al and say Evans but I can’t see that happening either. If we traded JJ, we’d have to move Josh to SF and that wont work. As much as I love Big Al. I can’t see it happening.
Check out the shot Ellis made after shoot around. Id say dude is on Fire.

ILL-LOGICAL/SAMUEL-this tragedy makes all of the issues we’ve had regarding the Hawks seem so petty. Man, I’m so sorry for coming down so hard on you guys over this stuff, and for that I apologize. On one of my many trips to the Dominican Republic, I visited a flee market in Haiti. There was a vendor there selling quality brandy for a very good price. So naturally, I bargained them down and bought several bottles.
After walking around the market for a while, I saw how hard these people were working and how destitute they were. I started feeling guilty, so I went back to the vendor I bought the brandy from, and without an explanation, I paid him the full asking price for the brandy, plus a tip. Even though the original asking price was a very good price, by talking him down, I felt like I had taken away from someone that had so little to begin with.
What really hurts are the circumstances that led to so much of their poverty. A bunch of motivated and determined slaves, led by Toussaint L’overture defeated the army of their oppressor and world military power, France, and gained their independence and freedom. They also helped other nations throughout this hemisphere successfully gain their independence. That had a rippling effect on other slave nations as well as the vatican and it’s control of the international slave trade. And because of that, Haitians have been kept down by both the vatican and the international community every since.
When the Haitian people overthrew the Duvalier’s, Poppa Doc and Baby Doc, who robbed Haiti blind and took most of it’s monetary resources, the French and the Vatican didn’t hesitate to provide sanctuary for both. They also provided sanctuary to the Marco’s family, Idi Amin and the shah of Iran, who also robbed their respective countries blind. Both France and the Vatican thrive on corruption and poverty.
Think about it, in countries that are predominantly Catholic, the people are basically poor and uneducated, except for France. Think about the state of affairs of all the Catholic countries in South America, the Carribean and Europe.

Having watched Bibby play the last couple seasons, I forgot what a penetrating PG looks like. Derek Rose is awesome. John Walls is coming next season, there is CP3, DWill, Tony Parker, Steve Nash, Devin Harris, Rondo etc…this is becoming a league of penetrating PGs. I hope the Hawks next PG (I dont know if it will be Teague) will be able to do just that, because that also leads to easy shots for others (imagine JJ being set up off a drive and dish).

KevinA,
The Hawks pick too low in the draft to get the kind of PG we will need. I think our best bet will be to try and trade for Devin Harris (if the Nets get the #1 pick, probably John Walls), or groom Teague and hope he develops into a starter. Another reason Teague needs his minutes, is because Bibby should not be the starter here for 2 seasons after this one.
(Side Note for Astro: Although Teague was the 7th PG taken in the draft, if I’m not mistaken, Ty Lawson the 6th PG taken. And even playing behind Billups, he got minutes early, so when Chauncey was injured, Lawson was ready to go).
Boston and Cleveland lost last night. The Magic play the Lakers tonight. If the Hawks can beat the Suns, the top 4 in the East will be even closer. Hawks need to win the division and get the #2 or #3 seed to play Boston in the second round.

Great Buzzer-beater last night by Sundiata.
Just wondering: how is he in the for the last play, yet we keep Marvin in at the end of Crawford a lot of the time? The guy is an NBDL rookie who was just brought up. Sloan is obviously a genius. Anyway, anyone know is Deron has been dealing with injuries?

It would be nice to see a Teague start tonight. There is now way Bibby can guard Steve Nash.
We do seem to play better against up tempo teams and were at home and rested. Should be a geat game.

You won’t get to see Teague start, but I’d like to see the 2nd unit roll out to end the 1st and possibly begin the second. They brought tremendous energy & played well in the last game.
Are Mo and ZaZa still out? I liked seeing Collins come in early in the 1st the other night. What about Randmo?

One of those big’s need to sit. With the Suns we might need Mario and his defensive speed. When Barbaso and Nash play together who is going to stop them from driving and living in the paint. Phx love the 3 pt shot and shoot for a high average.
Their center Fry loves to shoot the three which will keep Al away from the bucket. I don’t see much of a chance of Collins or ZaZa playing much. Joe Smith prob the better opton with Al playing major minutes.
Key to the game might be Josh equaling the efforts of Stoudemire. Nash will have a big game.

RICHBRAVE-you know me so well, and you’re welcome. During the glory days of the old Washington Bullets, I was like you, a fan of the Hawks and Bullets. It was hard not to be a fan of the Pearl, Wes Unseld, Elvin Hayes, Bobby Dandridge, Kevin Greavy, Henderson and the way they played the gm. Back then, the biggest scandal was the episode where KWashington accidently shattered the face of Rudy T.
You can forget about Teague getting a chance to start or playing more mins than Bibby. Even if Bibby couldn’t play, Woodson would start MWest. If West wasn’t on the team, he’d start Crawford and use Evans in the guard rotation. He’s not going to give Teague or this team a chance to show what can happen when you add speed, quickness, penetrating ability and DEF at the PG position. At least not as long as Bibby is still on the team.
Why do you think we’ve seen the trend established where Woodson usually followed up a solid performance by either SStaudemire, ALaw or JTeague with a DNP CD, or no more than 3-4 meaningless mins at the most. Even when ALaw started for an injured Bibby and more than held his own against some of the NBA’s elite PG’s, especially on DEF, as soon as Bibby returned, Woodson anchored him to the bench and never included him or his DEF in the regular rotation. No player that poses a threat to replacing Bibby has ever been given a chance to do so by Woodson.
So, until we get rid of MBibby or Woodson, we can forget about seeing how much better this team can be with a PG that can use speed, quickness and penetrating ability to attack a DEF, as well as play DEF.
The lack of appreciation for the committment to improving his overall gm, and the way he’s performed in limited opportunities, shows Woodson either doesn’t care about, or doesn’t understand, the value of what RMorris can do for the team during those times when our OFF goes south. I’m certain everyone, including the WOODY LOVERS, remember his statement about rewarding those players who take advantage of whatever opportunities that are presented to them. Well, if that statement was more than just lip service, or typical Woody BS, RMorris definitely qualifies for more mins and consideration. SO, WHY HASN’T HE RECEIVED ANY?
When a HC limits the chances, opportunities and/or mins of his players, especially bench players, he limits the overall ability of the entire team. It was said recently that Woodson definitely played little DEF when he was in college or the pros. He was known primarily as a profilic jumpshooter, and not much else. That’s why I don’t think he ever started in the pros. But as a HC, he’s suddenly considered to be a DEF minded HC, even though he stubbornly insists on starting and protecting a slow, none penetrating, one dimensional PG that plays NO DEF. Then he blames the teams DEF failures on everyone but himself and his PG.
THE HAWKS AREN’T GOING TO GET MORE CONSISTENT, OR MUCH BETTER, WITH THIS KIND OF COACHING ATTITUDE, PHILOSOPHY AND/OR APPROACH, AND/OR UNLESS WE GET A WILLINGNESS TO EMPLOY MORE STRATEGY, INNOVATION, ADJUSTMENTS AND COMMITTMENT TO UTILIZING ALL OF OUR POTENTIAL ASSETS FROM OUR HC.

I hope everyone recognize the Hawks are only 3.5 game out of 1st place in the east. We should be shooing for 1st place in the east to have home court advantage throughout. We have 2 games against Cle. in April. We have 2 more games against the Magic, and another game against Bos (hopefully KG is back for that one). These games are excellent oppurtunities to make up ground with half the season almost gone.

Woodson did say he’d play Mario because he knows what he’s getting from Mario.
I’d think after Teague’s block and nice game the other night, he’d be rewarded, but I guess not.

Ken,
I dont think Woody is afraid of playing Teague for the reason you mentioned (not wanting to show up Bibby). I just think based on Woody’s (lack thereof) offensive system, he puts more emphasis on being able to consistently make a jump shot (therefore ignoring the other talents that Teague brings to the table).
The ironic thing is he is supposed to be a defensive minded HC, but yet he doesnt give Teague the PT when Teague is a better defender than Bibby, especially against quick PGs.
I would be surprised if Teague gets much PT tonight. Woody’s reasoning will be that its going to be a high scoring game, so we will need Bibby’s jump shooting.

Everyone knows Woodson’s focus is on Defense. We all know he’s going to play veterans regardless of potential on the bench.
He plays Mario because he knows he’s going to get someone playing D and rebounding with reckless abandon. Alot of folks have been bashing Rio, but I still say you can’t discount the fact that h is energy helped spark the team and the 2nd unit took over in Washington.
Teague looked great against the Wizards. I’m loving his composure under pressure. He seems to be more selective with his shots and he’s not turning the ball over. No one can really question his D, as he’s proven to be as effective as any guard we have, plus he’s proven to be an excellent help defender. He needs a shot, but won’t get it.
Hopefully Bibby & Teague will split minutes 50/50 next season with the trend moving towards Teague as the starter. Hopefully Teague can develop a better jumper. I think alot of his scoring is confidence related and not technique. Right now he’s our future as is Randmo for our big.
We don’t have any real potential to draft and we’re stuck without alot of $$ to sign free agents. We’ve got a great core. We’ve just gotta get the most out of them. Can Woodson do that – YES! Will Woodson do that? We all have our ideas on that one.
