Hawks-Magic thread

Orlando - Hope all are doing well.

Been running all day to get here. Very interested to see what happens, obviously. A couple quotes and I’ll let you all at it.

Josh Smith on Dwight Howard:

“I’ve known Dwight since we were in preschool. We went to the same preschool together. I’ve known Dwight since we were in diapers.”

On playing against him now:

“We talk to each other, but it’s not hard because if you don’t have the same color jersey on as me when the ball is thrown in the air, [you're] just an opponent. Then afterward, we come back to our senses and we’re friends. If you see us out there, he’s trying to block my shot harder than probably anybody he’s ever tried to block and I’m trying to do the same thing. It’s real competitive.”

On playing back in the day:

“We’ve played against each other before we started playing with each other (for Atlanta Celtics), different AAU teams. Believe it not, Dwight was a point guard at first. When we were like 11 or 12, he was a point guard. He ran point for his team.”

Mike Woodson on Howard:

“Dwight is, I think, one of the best centers in our league. He’s a major, major force. He causes problems for a lot of ballclubs, especially our team. Our focus is definitely on him. We can’t give him all the attention because they have so many three-point shooters around him. He’s got to feel bodies. He’s got to see different people from a physical standpoint. You just can’t let him have his way.”

On Brendan Haywood defending him without help last night:

“He’ s a lot bigger than Al Horford. Al is 6-9, 6-10. Haywood is a big 7-footer. He stands right in Howard’s face in terms of size and weight probably. They can afford to play him straight up. We cant do that with Al, until we’re able to come in with Zaza, and if we play Jason Collins tonight. There’s not too many players in this league that can play him straight up.”

We have a two game trend of the Hawks getting the offense into their sets early in the shot clock. JJ and Bibby had 15 assists between them.

This is the kind of basketball we have been looking for.

Just read a book that talked about how guards in the early 60’s would have (literal) nightmares about Bill Russell coming out of nowhere to block their shots even when they were playing teams other than the Celtics. Same thing must be happening sometimes with Dwight Howard.

Let Howard get his, don’t let the others get it going. That plays right into what they’re trying to do. Get teams to double downlow on Howard to free up those shooters from beyond the arc.

Fortunate Joe hit the long 3, but the 1 one 1 garbage is what gets us in trouble.

Way too sloppy.

They just blew that lead up. Struggling to find good clean looks.

All this team does is one on one and jumpshots

Matchups. We just don’t seem to matchup well with Orlando. Our guys are at there best when penetrating. It’s tough for us to penetrate with Howard in the paint. His size just alters everything our guys are trying to do.

My prediction, JJ/Jamal will get into the jumpshooting game as a result of Howard’s post prescence. Neither will get anything easy going at the rim because of Howard.

Wow.

Really? JJ Reddick? Jason Williams?

We’re not moving at all offensively. 4 guys are watching one guy do his thing. No penetration-dish despite Howard being on the bench.

This one has already gotten ugly. This bad minus Vince Carter? They’ve lost 4 in a row, their confidence was shook coming into this game, and this is what we see?

Very poor preparation on the part of the Hawks! A chance to take first place, and make a statement to the Magic! There is too much Dr. Jekyll – Mr. Hyde going on with this team!

As much as I love the Hawks, this team disgusts me. No points in the paint, no poise on the road& Coach Woodson doesn’t kno what’s goin on. SMH @ this performance
