Greetings, all-
What to make of Tuesday night?
Jamal Crawford’s take: “We had a rough stretch scoring the ball and that hasn’t been the case all year. We look at it as a fluke, laying an egg, and hopefully come out tomorrow and get a win.”
I don’t know if I entirely agree with him, but I don’t think he’s so far off. I don’t know what happened in the fourth quarter. Crawford said that pressure built with each failed possession. Al Horford said that Cleveland defended the transition differently and caught the Hawks by surprise. After a sizzling start, Joe Johnson might have been as ineffective as I’ve seen him. Obviously, Cleveland had something to do with it. The Cavs are one of the best defensive teams in the league – first in points in the paint allowed, second in defensive field goal percentage and fourth in points allowed per game. Earlier this season, they held Milwaukee scoreless for more than 11 minutes.
Mike Brown, before Tuesday’s game: “Guys are doing a nice job limiting teams to one shot. There were stretches (in the season) where we were getting hurt on the offensive glass, there were stretches where we got hurt in transition. There was a stretch where we were turning the ball over and our floor balance wasn’t great and we were getting hurt real bad with some easy baskets. We’ve kind of done a decent job of trying to clean that up. Our guys have been focusing on those areas and done a better job of not letting those easy buckets happen to us.”
But, it did seem fluky. I (and you, I imagine) have grown accustomed to the Hawks making good decisions with the ball – or at least not turning it over – and they were just haphazard, particularly in the fourth quarter. I guess the tougher part is teasing out how much pressure and defense had to do with it, and how much was the Hawks just imploding.
Some links:
Jeff Schultz’s column from the game.
“I think we put too much pressure on ourselves to go win a game instead of just playing the way we know how to play,” Josh Smith said. “We definitely thought about this game too hard.”

Hawks pre-game?
Cleveland Plain-Dealer’s game story.
(The Cavaliers) have never done what they enforced on the Hawks in this one, stuffing them for nearly nine minutes in the fourth quarter.
espn.com’s Daily Dime.
qualitatively it was shocking how little had changed from the playoff series nearly eight months ago.
Anyway, going forward.
Why the Hawks will win
1. Few gave them much of a chance in Boston and Dallas, and they won there. (The Dallas game, you’ll remember, followed the New York loss, one of the worst of the season. Josh Smith got tossed, the starters played extended minutes and it looked for all the world like Dallas would run the Hawks out of the gym. Interestingly, Crawford said pretty much the same thing following that New York game that he did Tuesday. This is a pretty confident group, and I didn’t sense any self-doubt in the locker room after the game.)
2. I think the Hawks think or know they can play with Cleveland, and I don’t think they’re scared. As poorly as the Hawks played offensively at times, they did a pretty solid job on Cleveland defensively, particularly in the second half. Marvin Williams defended admirably against LeBron James (and had a solid night overall), although I’m not sure where to draw the Marvin played well/LeBron played poorly line.

I think LeBron's the one on the left
3. I don’t think the Hawks will have a stretch like they did Tuesday night, at least not of their own doing.
4. The Hawks were a little miffed with the chirping that some of the Cavaliers were doing, which may make them all the more eager for payback (if they need any more reasons). Without naming him, they were particularly unimpressed with the woofing that Jamario Moon was doing.
5. Despite their many incompetence issues, the Hawks had 23 fast-break points against Cleveland, 10 more than the Cavs’ average. There’s no reason the Hawks can’t do better if they handle the ball better in transition than Tuesday.
Why they won’t
1. Again with James – even if Williams had a lot to do with his 6-for-20, there’s no way he plays like that two nights in a row.
2. When the Hawks won in Boston, they were helped by Boston shooting 1 for 15 from 3-point range. In Dallas, Josh Howard was out.
3. Besides James, I don’t think Cleveland played all that well. There were a number of turnovers that were just bad, bad plays that I wouldn’t expect that team to make. The Hawks will likely face a better team Wednesday.
4. One of the Hawks’ pillars is rebounding. Cleveland neutralized the Hawks Tuesday, outrebounding the Hawks 43-30 and holding them to five offensive boards, and there’s no reason to think the Cavaliers can’t do it again.
5. Bottom line, it’s hard not to say that the Cavaliers are a better team. The Hawks’ chance to take one was Tuesday.
Why do you think the Hawks will win/lose tonight? Feel free to use my reasons, as each of them rates a 10 for insight.*

This one goes to 11.
Also, I’m planning on figuring out who won the prediction contest in my hotel in Cleveland this afternoon. Looking forward to it.

I watched the game at Papadeaux last night. Who was seated at the table next to me? Michael “the burner” Turner. I watched hin get up and go to the restroom and his ankle looked fine to me. What a slacker.
As for the Hawks; they are who I thought, uh…think they are…uh were…uh….You get my meaning. They are OK as long as they are not in the spotlight. Unfortunately, the pressure is on and they will lose again tonight.

The Hawks have folded against Orlando in a game at home that they should have easily won, and last night against the Cavs, they had 8 chances to take the lead at the beinning of the 4th quarter, and failed each time.
There’s something missing. They have to be abel to not just compete, but to beat these teams when they play them at home.
Absent of that, they’ll get their #4 spot in the playoffs, and be out in the 2nd round.

I truly believe the Hawks will win by 12 tonight. As the Cavs said themselves they had a hard time on the boards last night. Two of their best rebounders are both over 30 and on the downside of their career. I see Josh and Al having a better chance to bounce back for a good game on the boards than I do of Shaq and Ilguaskus. This may sounds rough, but I think the problem is they need someone to give Varejao some true physical play. If he catches one or two elbows in the side or the back while flying around for a rebound, I think it will slow him down.
The question I have is, in the fourth on the breakaway for West, why didn’t Evans foul him at half court?
Anyway, I look for the Hawks to come into this game with a lot of confidence. I also look for them to leave with confidence and a victory. I think in the first half, the Hawks should goto Pheonix old rule of 10 seconds or less, just to go ahead and get the big guys out of the game.

I was very disappointed in the Hawks last night. After beating Boston, we had a chance for a statement game against Orlando on national TV, and we got outscored by 29 in the second half.
Another statement game against Cleveland, and we go scoreless for 9 minutes. And where was Joe Johnson?
I dont think the Hawks win tonight because of LeBron. He was horrible last night, and did not get as many foul calls as he’s used to. Playing at home, he will be hard to stop (I hope Marvin is ready to step up his defense again).
That being said, I hope I’m wrong, because I would love to see the Hawks beat Cleveland in their own building, especially since we might see them in the playoffs.

Calling Turner a slacker because he can walk to the bathroom? Wtf! And from last blog: RA, whats going to be your excuse after tonights game? We’re still running ISO oe’s after 5 years of the sh.. not working, and you talking bout how the Lakers played against Cleveland. The Lakers take a break every now and then. They can afford to do that. They’re the CHAMPS. We got swept by Cleveland in the Playoffs last year, and last night we had a chance at redemption. But instead, we layed an egg. Plain and Simple. Maybe we’ll redeem ourselves tonight? I seriously doubt it though. And again, SUND thanks for not jumping the GUN. New contract my a..!

I’m curious to see if Marvin can duplicate his defensive performance in tonites game.
Last night’s game was gaurd-dominated. Not Lebron-dominated, not bigs-dominated. The matchups favor Cleveland in the backcourt. We can’t matchup with Delonte West. As someone else mentioned in another post, we can’t cover up Bibby’s inabilities on the defensive end.
If you throw Bibby out there with Crawford and JJ, then JJ’s stuck playing LBJ. If you want Marvin out there guarding LBJ, then you have JJ/Crawford covering up West/Williams. Defensively, this is probably the Hawks best chance to slow down the Cavs, but offensively, it hurt us last night. Without Bibby on the floor, we couldn’t seem to generate a single good shot.
The Magic give the Cavs problems because their 4-man can stretch the floor. Towards the end of the 1st half, we tryed a lineup with Marvin at the 4, but the problem gets to be downlow with Horford banging with 2 7-footers. We struggled to get boards in that stretch and they got a couple of easy tip-ins/drives to the lane.
What lineup would be best for the Hawks to floor to slow down Cleveland on the defensive end and to generate offense?

be it that our coaching style is more reactive… when struggling, our in game adjustments and counters are usually sub par. it seems when never make that tactical move to get us over the top or to even hold serve for that matter…
i think tonight’s game will tell us more about our team than last night. as a unit, coaches and players. how resilient are we? do we punch back? our hawks looked as if they were under pressure. we were pressing last night, but this team is older, and should have performed better. even with not as favorable chances of winning it would have been to our advantage to have played the 1st game in Cleveland.
im waiting on Woodson to out coach somebody… we can’t win against better schemes with just talent alone. when we show the ability to successfully modify a game plan we can compete with the triumvirate… those coaching staffs have illustrated such.

This team is capable of beating Cleveland in Cleveland. I’m not bashing Woody here, but he had no answers in terms of adjustments last night.
If we walk into Cleveland and get blown out tonite, this team is no different from what we saw last year. Sure, we’ve got upgrades, but we don’t want to walk away from this 2-game series with our heads down. This is a “prove yourselves” type of series, and another blowout loss in Cleveland won’t do anything to help the Hawks morale. I wouldn’t count the Hawks out tonite, especially based on an 8-minute scoreless stretch we witnessed last night.
Let’s see what we can do tonite. I’m not too hopeful, but not hopeless. A W tonite is vital for this teams near/future success.

Cavs fan here. I just think that last night the Cavs turned up the dial defensively in the 4th quarter. The Cavs have been kicking up their defense at the ends of games more and more this season. A couple weeks ago they even held Sacramento scoreless in overtime. With the exception of Mo Williams, all of the Cavs rotation players are capable of playing great defense. Delonte West is a fantastic defender, and so is LeBron when he wants to be.
I think the Hawks are better than last year. They’ve gone up a notch. The problem is, they’re still a notch below the Cavs….and probably the Celtics and Magic too. The Hawks can get to that level, but they just might be a year or two away right now.

tb – come on now! You know Woody is the best coach in the NBA! The only reason we lost is because the players didn’t execute.
The real reason we lost was poor shooting (FT & FG) – just like the Orlando game. Everyone had good looks at the basket in the 4th quarter but couldn’t hit squat!
Poor Marvin – he stuffs Lebron then throws the ball away for an easy Cav’s basket! The guy can’t win! Even though I never played ball in college it was plain to see that Marvin played great defense last night. When he guarded Lebron there were no explosive drives to the rim or easy post up shots. Lebron had to settle for highly contested jumpshots.
When Josh was guarding him …….?? Curious to hear others comments.

Like the daily dime stated, nothing much changed from the playoffs of last year. We have a coach who can only come up with one game plan at a time. He never has a back up plan or any great counter moves. Ol Woodrow just cannot make adjustments. The Cavs took away what was working and Woodrow for the life of him couldn’t find a way to adjust. As he says, just play harder. So I guess our plan B is always play harder . Sund did the right thing by waiting to see if he wants to give Woodrow a new deal. Come playoff time we will be playing these types of games and it looks like Woodrow still cant come up with any plays on that board other than iso iso iso iso and play harder.

Win by the jump shot, die by the jump shot. Not a surprise. This has been our identity for years. Were a better team for sure but even good jump shooting teams have up and down nights. We are still on track for 50-54 wins which is what I hoped for going into the season. We will still beat a few good teams and lose to a few bad teams.

The officiating was ATROCIOUS in the 4th quarter last night. Every time we would start to get some momentum the refs would make a bogus off-ball foul call on us, call a travel, and then not call fouls when our guys are getting Clubbed on the other end. I was there last night, everyone could see it, we got JOBBED in our own house by these subpar NBA officials. Then we lost our composure, Woody got a T, and we couldn’t hit a shot. The Cavs were given 100% momentum, in a close game, by the Zebras. Expect the Hawks to give Cleveland their best shot tonight, and if they can take it, they can take it, but I don’t think they will. Look for the Hawks to play angry and motivated tonight, and don’t be surprised if they beat the Cavs handily.

Our biggest problem was obviously in the paint- giving up points in the paint lack of rebounding. Also, our free throws killed us. If we had just had a decent night at the line and grabbed a few more rebounds, this could have been a different result even with that awful 4th quarter stretch.
Delonte West plays great D on JJ. In a way, Crawford saved us, but once we became dependent on him JJ lost all of his flow and the offense just broke down completely. Some of the worst turnovers imagineable- especially that throw away by Marvin under the Cavs’ goal.

jhan,
Gotta agree with you regarding Marvin’s defense on Lebron last night. Marvin’s length & strength, his balance (i.e., his weight distribution while in defensive stance), and his refusal to react to LBJ’s fakes, all seem to have bothered the chosen one last night. I expect Cleveland to try and use more picks tonight to trick Woody’s switching defense into more preferred LBJ vs Crawford, and LBJ vs Josh, and LBJ vs Bibby match-ups.
Both Marvin and JJ match up really well with LBJ; Smoove can’t move his feet or body quick enough out on the floor, and Bibby & JCross just don’t present any sort of defensive threat to LBJ. If Cleveland’s backcourt is not on fire like last night, I look for much more of LBJ against our poorer defenders in tonight’s re-match.
We need Marvin to duplicate last night’s defensive work; we need more shots for the highly efficient Horford; we need more of a presence from Joe Smith on the offensive boards; and we need Smoove to stay out of early foul trouble.

Very simple to diagnose the problem I think: 1) No penetration from the point 2) No post up threats
Mike Bibby should not be starting for our team. We don’t have enough offensive threats on our team to have a point guard that does not penetrate and dish for an open J. Give Teague I try and I guarantee the results will be better. Bibby fills it up against the weaker teams when they leave him open for a three. Easy to beat the dead horse but if we had C. Paul instead of Williams we would be a legit contender. We don’t have a great post of threat and thus do not create double teams that lead to open J’s. It is a wonder how we even score as many points as we do. Prove me wrong tonight Hawks or I will be forced to bore everyone with comments.

Worst 4th quarter I have ever seen from both teams. However, Cleveland finally got going. No ADJUSTMENTS from Coach Woody. He could not even manage to get thrown out by getting a second T; also a strange time to take a T when your team has not scored for almost 5 minutes. I can’t even recall him taking a time out.
Where in the H-ll was Joe? He disappeared after the 7 minute mark of the 1st quarter.
What happen to the difference makers we brought in to contend with teams like the Cavs: Joe Smith no impact, DNP for Teague & Collins. Crawford played well, made buckets; Was’nt Joe suppose to help carry the load too?
Josh Smith is also starting to revert to Josh of old, putting up jumpshots & complaining all night.
Good luck in Cleveland tonight…I think I will tape this one & watch later…………

Hate to respond to my own comment, but can anyone tell me why Mike Bibby starts for the Atlanta Hawks? And, don’t give me that “experience” nonsense. I’d like Bibby on the bench to fill up a few threes and spell the starting PG but not play 30+ minutes a game. Teague is young no doubt, but does it make sense to not give him even a minute in the game? If all Bibby is for is to bring the ball up the court and pass it to JJ is that the answer to our problems? Plus, he is a defensive liability.

Chas, do you realize the offense of the Hawks is in the top 5 and that is all because of how few times Bibby turns the ball over? In less than a third of the playing time, Teague is averaging a turn over a game with Bibby. Bibby may have bad shooting games, and he may not penetrate. But how often in a game do you see Bibby 3-4 bad plays in the same game? This is the best offense the Hawks have played in the history of the organization. Before Teague can average over 20 minutes a game, he needs to slow down. He’s going faster than the ball is going, and he’s losing himself on many possessions. So many people speak about Bibby’s lack of defense, but how many games have Teague came in when the Hawks were up by 25 or so and the game ends up being decided by 14 points? I think Teague will be good. But he’s not ready yet.

Ramon, you had me at hello, but you lost me with the “best offense the Hawks have played in the history of the organization. You may be too young to have seen the Dominique years, but that team 87-88 could have taken our current team down each and every night. And you are correct that Chris Paul makes good cash , but according to my sources he makes that same as Marvin Williams and Mike Bibby combined. I’ll of course take Paul instead of Williams and Bibby. Bibby doesn’t turn the ball over because all he does is bring the ball the half court and pass it to JJ. How could he turn the ball over. Teague may turn the ball over more but he’ll should generate more offense too. I know he is young, but throw him out there. We will not ever win a championship with Mike Bibby starting at the point..mark my word.

Bibby is probably the worst defensive point guard in the NBA. He is severely overweight, has no speed, and is so predictable with the “pick n roll & pullup jumper” play. He is only good for alleyoops to Josh Smith, which even Joe Johnson can do.

Okay Guys…One or two ways this can go down tonight. The Cavs will start to blownout the Hawks by 2nd quarter or 4th. To beat the Cavs, you’re going to have to play defense for over 48 minutes. An the Hawks can’t do that. Also…LeBron x-factor—LeBron rarely have 2 bad games in a row. Also, the Q-Factor…the Cavs are starting to get they groove on again. “Mojo” That means they are starting to blownout opposing team coming in playing at the Q. In addition, the Cavs can match up with the Hawks. The Hawks can’t match up with the Cavs.
This team was build to play with any team and any style that means the Lakers, Boston and Orlando. On the other hand the Hawks is build to play one different style. RUN!!!! As far as being old…Shaq,Z and Parker are the only players over 30.

Everyone has ignored Crawford’s horrible defense because he led the hawks in scoring. Bibby played better D last night than he has in the past, but Crawford let the Cavaliers guards take over. Marvin was awesome on Lebron. LBJ attempted more than a handful of forced fadeaways.

Not sure if anyone said this because I haven’t read all the posts but one common denominator in recent Hawks losses is Josh Smith foul trouble. When he is playing full minutes, without foul trouble he is disruptive on defense and hard to guard on offense. When he is in foul trouble, he gets moody and makes poor decisions when in the game and when he sits, the team is not as good. Keep Josh in the game and active on both ends and Hawks win most of the time.

We’ll be up 14-7, just like we always are on the Cavs, then it’ll be 29-24 Cavs, then LeBron will sit first 4 minutes of 2nd and Mo will hit 3 3’s for Cleveland, making it a 42-29 lead. We’ll be down 48-39 at halftime. Then 3rd quarter we’ll get down even more and lose 91-79

WABE-the best starting lineup for tonight’s gm would be
SF-Marvin,
C-Horford,
PF-Smoove,
SG-JJ and
PG-Teague.
The Cavaliers are certain Bibby will start and their pregame stategy will be based on that assumption. Starting Teague would throw that pregame strategy completely out of whack. Having both Bibby and Crawford coming off the bench to provide OFF would go a long way toward eliminating last nights OFF shortfall.
This would be a good gm to give RMorris a chance to be a factor. Since Ilgoukas is primarily a jumpshooter, he wouldn’t pose much of an inside threat for Morris. However, Morris is definitely an inside scoring threat and would definitely pose problems for Ilgoukas. That’s how we can establish an inside out OFF. Woodson said that very thing last night. However, he has got to start doing more than just talk about it after the fact. He has to get off his butt and make the necessary adjustments and decisions, along with utilizing the proper talent available to him, that will allow it to happen.

This is one of those games where Woodson will see it’s close in the beginning and think that the SAME FIVE STARTERS JCraw + ZAZA will be our only hope of winning. He will therefore wear all their legs out, Cavs will pull away, and our best 6 players will all be exhausted for Friday’s tricky game vs. NYK

JEJE-I didn’t say he would start this gm, but he should. We all know it won’t happen. After all, when Bibby injuried his ankle, instead of starting or even playing Teague, Woodson insisted on running an obviously tender ankled Bibby out with the starters, and he limped around doing very little.

Hey Y’all:
The Hawks lost because they did not run nor slah to the basket on plys. They were afraid to get fouled by Clev elands big guys in the paint. The Hawks also did not pass the ball. They resorted too one on one ball many times througout the game. For them to win in all their games, thye have to pass that ball around to an open man for a shot and/or catch a man slashing to the basket. All in all, they have to move that ball around continuously on the offensive end. They must move the ball like “POETRY IN MOTION”. This must be done every game. On the defensive end, they are playing great. But on offense, we have to move that ball around.
GO HAWKS!!! MOVE THAT BALL AROUND.

Guess Woodson won’t be satisfied until he has to sit Josh or Al for the majority of the 1st half. And you know the only other bigs he’ll play will be ZaZa & maybe, just maybe, a few minutes for Joe Smith. I just worry that the Cavs will come out with some changes & that the Hawks won’t be able to counter. I think the Cavs are good enough & well-coached enough to not allow themselves to be dominated by the same gameplan two halves in a row. We surely have to play with the same intensity & fearlessness as we did in the 1st half though. Drive the ball, challenge their bigs.

Woody’s done a good job handling the rotation today. He’s been rotating the right guys into the lineup to matchup with the Cavs. Last night, it seemed we had no matchup for Delonte West. But tonite, Woody has swapped the right guys in and out the lineup to create a more favorable matchup. Guys like Evans offer a better matchup against West. Woody’s also done a good job rotating Marvin in and out of the game, and although he’s had some lapses, he’s offers us our best shot at slowing down LBJ without tiring JJ out on the defensive end.

This officiating issue is never going to get better until coaches start speaking up en masse and taking fines until Stern (who is a disgrace of a commish) is forced to clean up the refs and end all this “star treatment” crap. A foul is a foul, no matter who committs it.

The Hawks should demand a replay of the final 1:30 from the lost possession. That was an absolutely, positively CRITICAL possession that was screwed up by the shot clock failing to reset. The refs should have stricken the possession that followed and replayed it from the time the Hawks rebounded the ball and the clock didn’t reset.

I have never been compelled to post a blog until today. I am so angry and dissapointed. I watch the Hawks vs clevland tonight and what I witnessed was disgusting. The Hawks played a great game but you can’t beat your opponent and the referees. They cheated for Clevland the freethrow discrepency was atrocious. The game seemed to be rigged. How can they get away with that sh….t. They need to give the hawks some respect. I couldnt continue to watch because I knew the hawks were destined to lose. To all hawks fans please complain to whomever is over the officiating. The Hawks actually outplayed Clevland but the game was gift wrapped. In my heart any to anyone else that watched the game. I know you feel the same as I.To Mike Woodson great coaching job. I thank you for using your extra bigs. You were outstanding the team played great. Mac Town – The Hawks do try to take it to the hoop. But it takes a defender pulling out a 9 iron and whacking our guys before we get a foul call. So they start settling for jumpers because they KNOW the refs aren’t going to give them the calls.
With legit officiating, the Hawks can and do take it to the hoop. But if they’re playing against one of the NBA’s golden boys (Lakers, Cavs, Heat etc) teams they can take it to the hoop all night, get clubbed and get nothing. So their only shot to score is to shoot perimeter jumpers all night.

Hey guys, the refs did suck…..but if you think the “refs” are the only thing separating the Hawks from being an “elite contender” then you are smoking some of the finest stuff this side of the Mississippi.
We live and die by the jump shot……….just like the past few seasons…the increase in yearly wins the last 2 years is simply because of acquiring better players……but still the same offensive philosophy that probably will get us no where when it matters (playoffs against teams like the cavs)
even before the 4th Quarter….the Cavs were still in the game…even though we were shooting lights out.
Too 1 dimensional ….nobody to dump the ball down low to and expect consistent results……..nobody willing to drive the ball strong to the rack and finish or get to the line.

Firsrt off, goodbye Cheshire, and good riddance. Anybody else want off? There’s the door. Folks, the Cavs threw EVERYTHING they had at Atlanta, and got a lot of help. As far as I’m concerned, this is one of the best games that they played this season. Listen, when Lebron James can run through TWO players with NOTHING being called and land on a players back with NOTHING being called. When Verejo or however the crap you spell his name (I don’t care) can push Al Horford while he’s trying to shoot and NOTHING gets called, you’re going to have a hard night, even when you play as hard as the Hawks do. Kobe and the Lakers wouldn’t have done any better tonight. Now, I say this as a basketball fan, what happened tonight what a travesty. When you look at the no-calls and that debacle with the time clock at the end. Now, even if all that doesn’t happen, Lebron may score 55 and they MAY win anyway, but it’s going to take a while to wipe the smell of skunk off this loss, and if I was Woody, I’d have a formal protest on Commissioner Sterns desk in the morning.

Really ticked on 2 notes…
1) The refs should be ashamed of themselves. If ever there was a time to believe games are fixed or players are favored. Whatever.
2) Hawks are solely to blame for blowing a 17-point lead. Don’t know who to slap first, Woodson for call back-to-back-to-back Iso plays or Joe & Jamal for trying to do too much at the end of the game. It’s a recurring nightmare. Hawks share the ball the whole game & get selfish when the game tightens.

Clyde ,
Excellent post. I could not agree more. I’m disappointed and disgusted.
Bigdave also makes a very good point.
The refs catch the fact that after calling basket intereference, Cleveland has a half of a second left to inbound the ball and shoot. So they let them have it. Then, when Atlanta is rushed into a shot because the shotclock doesn’t reset, and they only have 11 seconds to shoot, the refs say “Oh really? Well we can’t do anything about that. Go get boned.”
This is beyond shameful. Beyond it. David Stern should be embarrassed. But he’s not. Because one of his cash cows is happy. There’s no thuggery like high class white collar thuggery.

Josh and Al can score against Lebron and Varejao. How are they going to stop them without fouling? Tell it like it is, if you’re going to say that Hawks aren’t good enough: Woody calls ISO with his two favorite guards, and ignores his low post guys when things get tight.

- Cavs FTA: 38 . . . Hawks FTA: 15
- Lebron FTA: 16
Yes folks . . Lebron had more FTAs than the ENTIRE HAWKS TEAM. Ish . . Jemario Moon had 6 FTA in 13 minutes. No Hawk had more than 4, even though we got hit almost every time we went to the basket.
Then you add the clock controversy, and it makes it all the more worse.
GROW A SACK @ THE ATLANTA SPORTSWRITERS.

welikebaseball2, I like baseball too, but let’s be clear, if you give a team as talented as Cleveland, any advantages over what they already have, they are entirely capable of coming back. I thought that under the circumstance (the considerably lopsided circumstances), the Hawks did a good job of fighting off the runs. How hard can it be to come back when all you need for a three point play is to send your linebacker plowing through the middle. Must be nice.

To my favorite team go to the hole strong; damn a foul you know they are not going to call nothing for you. On defense the next time the refs call a game on you like that be like the old badboys of Detroit and just knock the h..ll out of them. If you are going to be charged a foul give them a good reason. Big Ray, yea strategy is a big part of it too….but talent and personnel is also a problem when the other teams have a guy (or guys) willing to take it strong to the hole for the finish or foul call.
Crawford is the only guy with the balls AND TALENT to do it…..maybe Teague too…but he doesnt get PT….which can go back to coaching.
We cant get to the strike shooting jumpers all day. We live and die by jump shooting.
Horford is decent post player, Josh Smith..not so much.

I agree, we live and die by the jumper. What I’m saying is that Josh and Al can score on a lot of people. Al has some quickness and a decent move or two (nothing unstoppable, but decent). Josh is not a post player, but he is VERY hard to stop when he drives to the basket.
The “other” team has a heavily favored superstar who plows through people on his way to the bucket, and gets a foul call every time if an opposing player so much as breathes on him. If you notice, no one else drives, they all get theirs on back-cuts to the basket.
Teague would drive, but as you say he gets no PT. Personnel can be a problem, but USE Of personnel is just as bad of a problem.
I still say you can get points against Lebron and Varejao. Neither is an intimidating post defender by any stretch of the imagination, and Varejao can actually be a little foul prone. We got jobbed on the calls, Josh Smith should have been to the line at least twice more than he did, as should have JJ.
But like you say, we live and die at the stripe. I’m sorry, but that’s on the coach. Al and Josh have shown they can score.

I’m considering never watching another NBA game. They have destroyed the game I love. If the games are not fixed, @ the very least the league has such a bias toward it’s stars that there can be no competitive balance.
*Case in point: [2] block/charge calls both involving LbJ. Josh cannot be more perfectly set [block]; the other Marvin, no way LbJ was set or even in pos. [charge].
*Shot clock violation: you have until the next dead ball for a correctable error. Woodson should protest.[Pat Riley set precedent in Atl. when he protested clock malfunction]
*Also, his foot very much appeared to be on the line.[Verajao]sp.
But, the main point is there is no reason to believe it’s about competition anymore. It’s about show. The pre-game carnival complete with party hats made me sick.
And ‘James’ even though he gets every call, he still whines about the ones that don’t go his way. He barks at the ref. as much as Josh
(if thats pos.) yet ‘Bibby of all people gets T’d up. On top of all this he [James] shows no humility. He’s 25 now. He’s a grown-up. I must give Josh an enormous amount of credit, for the maturation he’s showing.
(not to mention the restraint)
To all of our guys, no matter how much myself and others get on here and bitch and moan…you guys, our guys, are 1st class in every respect. I’m proud to be a Hawks fan.

Meant to say, “we live and die on the perimeter.”
As far as the officials, I never said that is what keeps us from being an elite ballclub. Clearly our philosophy does. If it was just our personnel, then why was Woody so adamant during the offseason about “bringing everybody back” and just adding a piece or two here and there? He didn’t want his formula changed. Not once do you ever hear from him about wanting a big-time low post scorer. NOT ONCE. EVER. He wants to win the game with guards.
I’m mad about the officiating for THIS GAME. The officials kept us from winning THIS GAME. I also don’t think that beating Cleveland one time in the regular season (or even sweeping them in the regular season) makes us an elite team. It takes more than that. You have to beat more than one of the best teams, and you have to do it more than once. Better yet, you have to beat them in the playoffs.
Many people say we’ll never become an elite team with the personnel we have.
I say we also will never become an elite team without making the best use of the personnel we have.

I agree, AJC writers, start acting like you actually care about ATLANTA sports. You should get together with Sportsouth and put together a video montage of just how bad the Hawks got jobbed in this game. You should write feature articles on Tim Donaghy and how Stern was able to sweep the whole thing under the rug. BE REPORTERS. EXPOSE THE SHAM THAT IS THE OFFICIATING IN THE NBA.
And Woody, if you happen to read this. You should immediately start calling every coach in this league that doesn’t have a LeBron or D-Wade playing for them. Rally the troops and stand as one. It is the ONLY way this can ever truly change. Stern can bully a single coach. But he can’t bully a large group of coaches.

i remember 1 play in particular where james got the lose ball rebound and dipped his shoulder into a stationary Josh outside of the restricted area and Josh was called for blocking… then Marvin gets an AND1 on Delonte “coach take me out so i can hit this blunt” West and he’s called for a charge.
i thought Woodson coached well and used his talents tonight. i have only have 2 gripes… countless times i called for a true PG being on the floor w/ Joe and Mal… we had bad offense (not just iso’s) on every possession w/ out Bibby. if we converted it was b/c a tough shot was made. this is not necessarily a credit to Bibby, but strength to the argument of needing a back up PG as a moderator to this offense. i also think we should have left Marvin in the game when he usually exits for Jamal. we had enough offense with Joe being on and Bibby having a better shooting night. there were moments late that Jamal’s defensive and rebounding hurt us.
all in all we punched those guys back. Hawks as a unit, coaches and roster, showed me what i needed to see…

The NBA knows who the “homer” refs are and who the refs are who will give the edge to the visiting team, or the elite team if you prefer. The NBA keeps stats on the officials just as on the players.
The officials last night were Delaney, Mott and Leroy Richardson and the group tonight was even more weak. I do not believe Mott made more than 4 or 5 calls last night and a strong crew, or even a strong lead official, would have corrected the shot clock error tonight. The NBA knows ahead of time the officials who are most likely to give the league the desired result.
Why would the NBA send 2 extremely weak officiating crews to work games between 2 of the 4 best teams in the East? The only answer is the NBA sent crews to achieve a desired result.
The league has openly expressed displeasure with the ownership dispute in Atlanta. Do you think the Commissioner does not hold a grudge?
This is 42 years for the Hawks and every big game over that time has seemed to go against the Hawks, even back to the 1st year in Atlanta and a phantom call against Joe Caldwell to put Jerry West on the line for two in a crucial Western Conference playoff game. The FT’s won the game for the Lakers.

This is James last year in Cleveland, and all the foolishness that they carry on, they’re going to get it back times three after he’s gone. I hope they have fun posing for the rest of this regular season, because that point on, it’s downhill.

I’m very proud of all our Hawks, including Woodson, for the way they came into Cleveland after last nights embarrassment and took it to the Cav’s. It’s too bad we couldn’t overcome the three jokes that officiated the gm, and I have never made a comment about officiating on these blogs before.
Other than the officiating, I have one minor complaint. Down the stretch, it would’ve been a smart move on Woody’s part to put Morris in the gm. Since Cleveland used Varegao to double JJ on the perimeter, his inside scoring ability would’ve kept Verageo in the paint and forced the DEF to give him help with Morris. That would have opened the perimeter up for more open jumpers.
Like JEJE and I said earlier, it would be a smart move to play JCollins, because he’s tailor made for this gm and playing Shaq. He totally frustrated Shaq to the point they had to take him out of the gm. It’s a shame it took Woodson until the 32nd gm of the season to make an effort to find out what he had on his bench in Collins.

My point was that you do not have until the next dead ball. I agree, the question was raised well within the 24 seconds. See my comment above – a strong lead official would have made the correction. A short time before the problem there was a TV shot of Ken Mauer and Mike Brown yukking it up during a free throw.
Without LeBron the Cavs would win 20-30 games, maybe. Without LeBron, Mike Brown is out of work. His work makes Mike Woodson look like John Wooden.

Hawks gave a good effort. This was definitely not a choke job. Do they need to work on their offensive execution down the stretch? Obviously. But how many teams score 64 points in Cleveland in one half? The offense is not as bad as people are making it out to be. Down the stretch, the Hawks could not get any calls on their way to the basket and as we have well documented, the LeBrons got all kinds of calls. The FT disparity was 20+. Not to mention the shot clock. Then the once-in-a-lifetime 3 pointer by Verajo. He was 0-18 career before that shot. He should head to Vegas on the next flight. The Hawks didn’t choke- could have done better, but undone by some bad luck and bad officiating on a night LBJ went off.

Grandad,
Riley protested an early disqualification of Shaq. The game was played from the 51 second mark of the 4th quarter as a result of a foul called on Udonis Haslem being recorded as O’Neal.
Interestingly, up to that point in the season with Miami, Shaq was averaging 2 points and 1 rebound in the 4th quarter and OTs. His average minutes were under 5 as I recall. Shaq did not play in the 4th qtr on Tuesday and I only saw the last 6+minutes tonight but he did not play during that time. For several years now Shaq has been a liability late in games. Hardly the MDE as he claims.

“Abandoned houses here are like rainfall in the spring,” said Mayor Jay Williams, “That has gone on for decades.”

I liked one comment on SportsSouth when the refs were discussing the shotclock error: “We don’t need LBJ as our 4th official”. Unfortunately, that is what is happening every game I see where LBJ plays: him telling the officials what calls to make. He can call out officials and act like an overactive teenager having her period, but no “T” against him! Other players (not only our Hawks) complaining 1/10 to the refs of what (s)he is doing, they get tossed out of the game with double “T”’s. One more thing on the officiating.
The official on the offensive baseline is responsible for seeing the shot clock is reset on a change of possession. He simply looks up at the opposite end for the reset. The error should have been caught within 2-3 seconds. Whoever that official was will be fined and perhaps the entire crew will be fined.
This mistake had a bigger impact on the outcome than the Shaq mistake in Atlanta, but again that was the NBA golden boy, Pat Riley, and this is the Atlanta Spirit so disliked by David Stern.
I know an NFL official who told me the NFL has a game(s) every week with officials mistakes changing the outcome. The difference in the NFL is the public seldom hears of the error and the errors are not as obvious as in an NBA game.

Yes, the clock did not reset properly, but that alone did not cause us to give away a 17 point lead from the 3rd quarter. We should have stepped on the Cavs throat when we had them down. We should have finished them off and we didn’t.
Blaming the clock on one play is just sour grapes, crybabies. Next time we have a team down by 17, we build it to 30 instead of giving it back.

LMAO @ people thinking anything will be replayed. We had our chances in both these games, especially tonight, but rotted. We refused to double team LeBron James. We instead left Marvin and his AMAZING defense on LeBron and let him rot. We didn’t cover the shooters.
The reason the shot clock issue was passed over was because it really didn’t affect the outcome. We gave up a 3 to Varejao, who was unguarded. We let LeBron score 46 on his birthday. OK, one more on officiating.
Once upon a time in the NBA there were a number of strong lead officials. Jake O’Donnell, Jack Madden, Richie Powers, Hugh Evans, Darrell Garretson and many more. Now there are very few, and when Joe Crawford is one of your best you know the pool is shallow. Why? Because the game is not officiated as a basketball game but as entertainment.
Who could make consistent calls when the decision is based upon the player involved and not the circumstances? The jersey color and the name on the shoulders ought to be unimportant but as this blog demonstrates not many people believe this to be the case.
In last night’s game Shaq pivoted to face Josh on the low post, planted his elbow squarely in Josh’s chest and face and then laid the ball in the basket. No foul! Later Mike Bibby grabbed Shaq with both hands on the low post and held on until Shaq turned to face Josh – the foul was called on Josh. The lead official on that crew, Bob Delaney, goaded Josh into 2 Technicals the last time he was in Atlanta and that early DQ cost Atlanta the game. Certainly the NBA is aware putting Josh in foul trouble also puts Atlanta at a disadvantage.

And indeed – not taking in account the short shot clock, it was a clear intentional foul, as so many LBJ makes, without a call. I agree that we did not get the benefit of the calls. When teams come to our house, they generally don’t get the benefit of the calls. Are you familiar with home court advantage? It has generally been an NBA “custom” for at least 40 years.
Home teams get the benefit of the calls. The expression is called “getting homered”. “Superstars” have gotten the benefit of the calls for the last 40 years, too. Finally, when a top team, record wise, plays a sub-500 team, guess who gets the benefit of the calls? This has been the way of the NBA for as long as I have been alive. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, just the way it is.
One of the ways a road team should deal with this is to make the precious free throws that they get. To their credit, the Hawks made 14 of 15. Other than that, you have to not let the refs get you down. You have to “play through” poor officiating. Complaining only gets a player distracted.
Alien in ATL, are you saying one play decided the game, the overall officiating decided the game, the players decided the game, David Stern decided the game, all of the above, none of the above, or what?
I still say that, in any sport, if one play decides the game, then you have to wonder why the game was that close to begin with. We had the Cavs beat and we let them back in the game. When you do that, you become vulnerable to one play deciding the game.
Of course I don’t like it, but we have to look forward. We have to make sure that the next time we have a team down (especially one of the top teams) we finish them off. Let’s start with the Knicks on New Years.

lol@Alien in ATL thinks the ONLY reason the Hawks lost is because of the refs.
How about putting your foot on the throat of your enemy while they are down???
LAST NIGHT refs werent an issue…..our size was. Tons and Tons of put backs by the CLE Bigs.
Also, we went cold in the 4th. Again all of that was ON US, due to lack of personnel and just flat out not playing good late WHEN IT MATTERED DOWN THE STRETCH.
TONIGHT, the refs screwed up bad in the 4th…..but anybody who watched the game and knows basketball saw the real problems. WE LIVED AND DIED BY THE JUMP SHOT.
The jump shot got us up by 17, and the jump shot killed us…while CLE was driving it to the basket.
We reply too much on the jump shot.
Some of us argue that it’s strategy, some that it’s lack of personnel, and some say it’s both. Either way you put it, those things are bigger enemies to us than the refs.
Stop crying over this one one regular season game, I’m talking about things that effect the ball club on a general basis.
We know we are going to the playoffs right along with the other “elite” east teams, and these are things we need corrected.
Blown calls by refs on Dec. 30th mean nothing on the grand scope of things.

One last comment: usually, the referees can kind of mask their “favorable” calls by trying to distribute a fairly even count in personal fouls. Usually, the favorable team gets the free throws on those calls, the other team doesn’t. Tonight, they were so stupid that they couldn’t even mask that:
Atlanta: 24 PF vs Cleveland: 15
Additionally, the 24 Atlanta PF resulted in 38 FTA vs only 15 for Atlanta on 15 PFs.
Talking about not being biased? It makes me puke!

We didnt score in like the first 9 mins of the 4th last night, blame that on the refs too???
We had CLE down by 17 and could (should) have buried them. We didnt, then were put in position where those wacky calls by the refs cost us THIS game. We shouldnt have been in that situation in the first place, which wont change until the problems I listed are corrected.
According to some of you, Horford, Smoove, JJ, and Crawford are all all stars. Get off the high horse this team has problems, but I guess its ok……we can go back to beating up on the sub .500 east teams and patting the Hawks on the back.

Mac-Town:
We couldn’t drive the ball to the rim anymore because we were fouled every single time without getting the call, resulting in a turnover. Our play in the paint was killed by the refs not calling fouls, so as a team, you have to look for other options = jump shots. Yes, our jump shots didn’t go in at the end of the game, as didn’t those of the Cavs. But the difference was that the Cavs got the refs support in the paint where we didn’t! See the PF and the FTA stats!
And this is not the only night where we have this problem.
Yes, yesterday’s game was ugly, especially in the 4th, But if you review the stats, the Cavs weren’t playing any better! The score at the end of the 3rd was the same 3 to 4 minutes into the 4th, so both teams were struggling. The difference came when Josh Smith was called for (again) an arguable foul, followed by a T on the coach for rightfully arguing the call. That was the game changer!
Yes, our Hawks should have held their composure and not gone ice-cold in the 4th, but if the refs hadn’t given the psychological advantage to LBJ and his Cavs, our Hawks could have won. The officiating was not as bad as in today’s game – I agree – but don’t tell me the Hawks got a many favorable calls as the Cavs did tonight!

Jeje – I don’t think I called you an idiot in any of my posts, just asked you to shut up if the only thing you can say as a fan is against the team you say to support. Fair criticism should not be disregarded, but your comments only seem to be against the Hawks, nothing positive.
A real fan will and should acknowledge the good things and the shortcomings. But some so called fans only seem to be happy when they can over expose certain shortcomings, while not recognizing the good.

Oh and btw to all the pessimistic Hawks fans and the Cav fans, the reason we can’t win games against the big name teams ex. Lakers, Nuggets, Cavs, is because of the refs. It’s just so damn obvious of who the favor and they make SURE that the team they want to win does. Oh and just an fyi, we DID beat the Celtics earlier this year. That proves that we can play with the big boys if the NBA wasn’t so freaking biased.

Right on Alien in ATL!
I was at the Hornets/Heat game (an evenly officiated one I might add) while following the game on my phone and wonder wtf was happening to make us lose that 17 pt lead and I saw later that it was 8 on 5 no doubt. The last 2 minutes of the game should be replayed and yes Donaghy, no matter how shady a character he is, most likely is telling the truth – remember Conseco and Rafael Palmeiro testing positive after vehemently denying the fact.SMH
Let’s get it we still can right the ship and win the southeast.

LOL listen to how some of yall sound, if the game is as rigged and as fake as you say..and EVERYTHING is the refs fault for ALL hawks shortcomings, then why even watch the games??? Why watch any NBA games???
The Hawks didnt have calls go there way in the fourth tonight, I’m aware of that but that wasnt the ONLY reason we lost…and it d-a-m-n sure isnt the biggest of the hawks problems.
People are acting like the Hawks are such a well balanced and effective team that the only thing holding us back from a title is the refs, lol pathetic.
