Hawks-Cavs thread

Greetings, all-

Hope everyone is enjoying some time off. This will be brief, and we’ll get to game time. I just saw the most interesting thing. Well, maybe that’s overselling it.

The Hawks have a practice gym next to their locker room at Philips Arena, and I was walking through there from the locker room to the media room. Joe Johnson had just left the locker room to go shoot, and when I saw him in the gym, I saw him throwing a ball to the far end of the court.

When I walked in the gym, I saw who (I assume) he threw the ball to – Shaquille O’Neal, who was practicing jump hooks with a Cavs staffer. Johnson left and got another ball, and started shooting with a team gopher. Mike Bibby came in shortly after, to work with Johnson on something, and as soon as Shaq saw Bibby, he makes a joke about a fixed game. I didn’t hear what they were talking about, but I’m guessing it had to do with Tim Donaghy’s allegations.

Bibby went to Shaq’s end of the court, and they continued talking about that game, all in good fun, just two friends giving each other a hard time. Johnson, meanwhile, started taking 3-pointers. There was little to suggest an important game was about an hour away. It was a quiet gym with guys taking shots at either end.

I may remember that as much as anything from the time I cover this team.

Anyway, some brief thoughts. I don’t know that this game means as much to Cleveland as it does the Hawks. The Hawks are talking about these two games as measuring sticks, and apparently, the Cavaliers were talking about their Christmas Day game with the Lakers the same way.

My prediction is that Jason Collins will play. I don’t know how much Joe Smith can give, and I’m sure that Mike Woodson is going to spend a lot of fouls on Cleveland’s big guys.

Something to watch – how Joe Johnson does. It’s not quite the same thing, but Johnson has outplayed Brandon Roy, Dwyane Wade and Deron Williams when they came to town. LeBron James is a different creature, of course, and a different position, but I think Johnson will want to perform, regardless.

Also, Al Horford. He didn’t play hardly at all in the playoffs – as I wrote in today’s notebook, he said in hindsight, he shouldn’t have even played and put himself at further risk of injury. He’s been on a roll and this, obviously, is a giant challenge (and also opportunity) for him.

Gotta start writing. Enjoy the game.

I think the Hawks will win this one handily. Lebron was out til 4 in the morning having a few drinks in ATL last night and should look a little sluggish. If he looks good, maybe staying out all night is his regular routine.

Hawks need to at least split these 2 games.

I think Woody will play his starters 40 minutes or more (except Marvin)if he has to, because he wants to win the game tonight (it is at home, and its the first game).

I hope the switching doesnt put Josh on LeBron, because Josh needs to stay out of foul trouble.

Bibby has 0 points in 15 minutes, shooting 0-4. However, he does have 6 assists and 3 rebs. Unfortunately, Mo Williams has 15 points, 2 assists and 1 rebound in 15 minutes, shooting 5-6.

I feel for Josh. When he operates inside the paint, he gets fouled and goes to the line. But he is 0-4 in free throws. When he shoots the jump shot, he is way off.

And Marvin seems to lack confidence.

another observation… Bibby kills us on defense… and sure he can hurt us when he isnt making shots… but its almost vital for him to be on the floor for us to have any productivity with the ball. what trips me out even more is he doesnt even have it much on offense… odd??? so you almost have to die with his defensive handicaps… Jamal cant run this team.

These are the kind of games the Hawks will play in the playoffs. A slow down grind it out half court game. I am waiting for Samuel to tell us how Woody deserves his new contract right now.

And where is our offense? Players have to execute, but we have no offensive sets. Woody said he doesnt concern himself about offense. Well, tonight, the Hawks played good defense overall. But our offensive sets suck. Woody needs an offensive coordinator.

Teague should have gotten some burn tonight, because bench players play better at home, and Bibby sucked all night. 2 pts in 27 minutes. Teague gives us a change of pace, and he deserved some PT early in the game.

However, this is a team loss. I hope we can regroup for tomorrow.

TOO MUCH WOODY BALL. Our halfcourt OFF is a joke when it comes to playing good DEF teams. If we’re not getting pts from running or hitting jumpshots, we have no options built into our OFF to fall back on. How can a HC just stand on the sidelines with his arms folded and allow JJ to go ISO and one on one against double/triple teams, while committing multiple turnovers, and allow it to continue happening?

JJ took over the OFF and shut Marvin, Horford, Crawford and Smoove out. He wouldn’t pass out of the constant double teams, and it’s obvious Woodson didn’t say or do a damn thing about it. A good overall team effort, especially on DEF, was simply wasted because JJ and Woodson prevented the team from continuing to play team basketball.

HOW LONG IS IT GOING TO TAKE JJ AND WOODSON TO REALIZE THIS ISO AND ONE ON ONE WOODY BALL B.S. HASN’T WORKED AND ISN’T GOING TO WORK?

The Hawks aren’t gonna look for any trades. I seriously doubt they’ll risk tampering with the team chemistry.

Personally, the Hawks played the Cavs tough tonite. Just missed opportunities. We had numerous chances to jump out and take control of this game, but couldn’t get over the hump.

The 4th quarter was just a pathetic offensive display. Too much one on one, not enough aggressiveness. The Cavs had about 3 team fouls heading into the 3 or 4 minutes stretch. We didn’t attack. That jumper in the quarter that Smoove attempted really just speaks for what we were doing in that 4th quarter.

Chris Webber on NBATV commented on the difference amongst tactics. Going into the playoffs, the Hawks are gonna get into plenty of these grind it out style of games, and they can’t expect their #1 guy (JJ) to go one on one to get buckets.

O'Brien

December 29th, 2009

Clyde,

I am not a Marvin fan, but I thought he played a decent game tonight.

What do you know. Woody says he has to pick spots to give JJ a rest, especially when he’s struggling. (How many times does Woody tell you what he should have done AFTER the game).

The problem for the Hawks is they have no offensive sets. Most of JJ and Crawford’s points are ISO’s and 1 on 1’s.

cp

Once again no adjustments. This is why Sund did not give Woodson another contract. Like O’Brien said, this is the type of games we will see come playoff time and once again Ol Woodrow showed that he cant make adjustments to save his life. Once Cleveland adjusted their defense in the second quarter I knew the game was over. We never have a plan B. I mean never. Once plan A fails then we might as well pack it up and go home because Woodrow cant draw anything else up in the huddle. Sure after the game he will say all the right things about what we should have done but during the game he cant. We went from attacking the rim to setting for jumpers. The sad thing is I doubt we see anything different in the game tomorrow night. Can we please get a bigger sf to come off the bench?. Mo is way too small. Bibby gave us nothing but ol Woodrow once again just refused to give the rookie any burn to see if he could give us a spark. And we still have no offensive sets other than ISO ISO ISO

I can’t do much besides agree with you and Ken on a number of points. I will say however, that Shaq daddy didn’t kill us. Oh he helped out when and where needed, just like the rest of the Cavs.

But y’all are right. We didn’t attack the basket enough, we shot too many jumpers, and we went to an ISO game that has rarely beaten the best teams.

UGLY Loss!! I may be the only one to see some growth out of what was just a terrible 4th quarter. There are only 2 things I really wanted out of this game, #1 to see if the HAWKS could compete and #2 find an identity. Even though they lost and looked really bad in the 4th doing it, I think I saw both The HAWKS competed just fine for all of about 7 mins of the game and more importantly they are a fastbreaking, motion offensive team. Hopefully this game will really in-grain that style in their minds and it will keep them from having stretches like the 4th quarter again.

We have two problems when we play Cleveland.
1. We are undersized (but we did play them well enough to win).

I’m surprised it took Woody so long to get Bibby back in the game in that 4th quarter seeing how badly we were struggling offensively. I understand his defense is non-existent and he wasn’t shooting the ball so great tonite, but it was clear we needed a guy in there to run the offense.

Bibby played long enough to go 1-7 – how much Bibby do you want. JJ went cold – would not pass the ball and we quit going to our bigs till it was to little to late. The bench played like crap except for Jamal.

When Josh went to the bench we went from 8 up to 4 behind. Without Josh we just jack up jumpers. Where were the touches for Al – the most efficient player on our team.

IF YOU’RE NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION, YOU’RE PART OF THE PROBLEM. What does that mean? It means if HC MWoodson does absolutely nothing to stop what we’ve all seen JJ do time and time again, to the overall detriment of the team, then he’s the major part of the problem. If any on you believe the old saying that goes, ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS, then based on Woodson inaction when JJ goes ISO, JJ’s doing exactly what HC MWoodson wants.

When we are playing a team with good D like the CAVS, and we have a bunch of guys on the court who arent good one on one players, then we are going to have those offensive lapses. (Bibby, can only shoot…cant drive; Marvin, cant drive without stumbling, Josh, cant shoot or dribble)

That’s why Crawford did so well, the way Woodson likes for it to be done on offense is right up Crawford’s alley.

kwooden1,

One reason guys are out of position is because of our switching defense.

I look forward to seeing what adjustments Woody makes for the game tomorrow, because its all about adjustments. Cleveland adjusted in the second quarter, and the Hawks didnt.

Where are the Woody supporters who were saying that Woody should feel disrespected because he hasnt been offered an extension as yet? Sund is waiting until after the playoffs to decide. And thats the correct move.

Bright side of a potentially bleak (hope not) January is the fact that it’s JANUARY, and affords Sund the opportunity look very closely at the on-court product and determine if/what moves he’ll need to make in February to get us ready for the post-allstar break playoff run.

DO ALL OF YOU REMEMBER WHEN I MENTIONED IN AN EARLIER POST THAT YOU SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO OUR PG PLAY?

Did all of you Bibby supporters see the advantages of having PG’s that can post up, penetrate, create inside scoring opportunities, attack the basket and/or get the opposing Bigs in foul trouble? Did you also notice the disadvantage of having a slow, nonpenetrating, one dimensional jumpshooting PG who’s not hitting his jumper? I won’t mention the tremendous advantage of having one that actually plays DEF.

All of those intangibles you Bibby supporters are so fond of emphasizing didn’t do Bibby or the team any good when it came down to it. I find it hard to believe Teague could have done any worse. At least Teague has the talent and potential to get better if given the opportunity, especially against top competition, but Bibby won’t.

Bibby:
He’s clearly the catalyst for our offensive and needs to be on the floor as long as possible. I think the only solution is to use a Mike D’Antoni style defensive; immediately double all post-ups and trap all pick and rolls Bibby’s involved in. I think this would cut down on the confusion created by the mis-matches during the constant switching. This type of defense isn’t ideal for half-court “Play-off” basketball, but it doesn’t have to be. It just has to effective against certain teams in certain situations.

A lack of offensive sets is one thing, but they’re meaningless when you don’t have the personnel to get easy baskets in the half court set. And again, the size differential played a big part in this game on both ends as it allowed the Cavs a greater margin of error. The Hawks can get up and down the floor with the best of them, but the next step is becoming a better half court team on both ends and they’ll have to get the personnel to do it.

Our 14 Million Man goes invisible and why does he stay outside dribbling the Ball between his legs as the shot clock runs down. He will not get this type salary as a free agent next year. Bringing Bibby back wasn’t a good move becuz he gives you nothing in BIG GAMES(remember Cleveland & Boston in the playoff last year when RONDO MADE HIM LOOK LIKE THE ROOKIE). Trade Da 14 Million Dollar Man if there are any takers……………….Let Woody Go………….Please Don’t bring him back…………..Find some way to get slow, non-defensive playing Bibby out of here.

FOR ANYBODY THAT SAY AL CAN’T HOLD HIS ON AS A CENTER CAN IT. MATTER OF FACT..I GOTTA GIVE A CUDOS TO THE FRONTLINE AS A WHOLE..AL, JOSH( DUDE STAY OUTTA FOUL TROUBLE), MARVIN, ZAZA.

NOW FOR THE BACKCOURT…JOE (DUDE ARE YOU REALLY PLAYING FOR A BIG TIME CONTRACT?), JAMAL, MO EVANS. ALL IM GOING TO SAY IS THAT PERFORMANCE IN THE FOURTH QUARTER WAS DISHEARTENING. C’MON FELLAS…FIRST ORLANDO, NOW THIS…I CANT LIE I’M DISSAPOINTED AS HELL.

IT’S MARVIN’S FAULT….I said it for you Marvin HATERS

Marvin played great defense tonight…get off his back.

Our problem is and will always be a penetrating PG and a 2nd shot blocker. Bibby is the best option to to run the offense but if his shot isn’t falling, he is not worth the defensive liability. We Have only primary ball handler who is quick enough to consistently get to the hole(crawford). Bibby’s allows the other teams PG to break down our defense and get us out of position. We we our out of position we can’t defend or rebound properly….It happened in the DENVER GAME.

Jody, Truth There’s nothing we can do about the size difference right now, we have to live with what we got. Our low post game consists of Smoove’s lefty jump hook and Horfords 10-15ft jumpshot. That’s probably enough to get us to the 2nd round and not any further, as you have already stated. So what we’re going to have to do is run a constant pick and roll, motion offensive and JJ, Bibby, Marvin and JC will have to hit their jumpshots. We haven’t seen them execute that type of offensive for a complete game against a very good team. If they can learn that and execute it late in games, I think they can beat Cleveland, Boston, Orlando even the Lakers in the 7 games series. It sounds like crazy talk, but executing that type of offensive consistently against quality defensive teams is near impossible, so I’m really not that crazy. Just a FAN!

I agree with that. But you would think that JJ, Jamal and Bibby have the experience and brains to ride the big’s. Time for a new guard that will pass the ball low and play some D. We don’t have one of those.

By the way – who guards Williams and West. The big’s? Most of our losses come with our guards getting torched. I don’t think it is possible to coach defense with these guards. When we are guarding big’s like Cleveland has you can’t expect Josh, Al and ZaZa to pick up the guards also. Josh does a credible job but that is only because of his unique talent. When he gets into foul trouble we are very vulnerable.

Why did JJ quit driving and passing. Seems like when quits attacking in the flow of the offense our entire team goes to crap. I don’t think Woody told him to quit driving. Just another loss because of bad balance and poor ball rotation. The reason I do not put all this on Woody is because we have played great ball many times this season and last with good ball rotation and much better balance.

I agree that it would be rather difficult to try to alleviate the problems with size right now. However, that doesn’t change the fact that the issue will need to be addressed (along with the addressing of other issues) at some point before the Hawks can take that one last step to being an elite team. They’ll just have to make sure they’re ready when those opportunities present themselves (and they will).

Well, the Hawks got smacked in the mouth in their own gym with the Cavs talking smack to them (on national TV no less). Like Jim Rome used to say, they got punked in their own crib. And you know that if the Hawks had any kind of offense in the 4th they could have won this one. Now, like Woody likes to say, we get to see what we’re made of. I say tomorrow night is a must-win game. They can’t allow Cleveland to win both games.

Was at the game tonight and here are my thoughts…..

I will agree with some of you that Marvin had a good defensive game tonight but that’s not the point. I will say this to all of you who think that Marvin shut Lebron down. Lebron and a couple of his teammates were partying hard at 3am last night at a very infamous club in the A. I left at 3am and they were still going hard. . Lot’s of Patron and bottles of Champagne that I can’t afford anymore were still flowing at 3am. Lebron looked very sluggish and actually looked like he was trying to get his teamates involved as opposed to taking over the game. I would not get to excited about Marvin’s defense tonight as he will have to face Lebron tomorrow on his birthday in Cleveland, with a star studded party planned for tomorrow night. I have made this point for two years. If Joe is off, no one in our starting lineup can create their own shot. Lebron was checking Marvin and leaves him wide open in the corner and is free to roam and help out on Joe. We have to have someone else on the floor who is a scoring threat at the 3 to open the floor up. WE WILL NOT WIN IN THE PLAYOFFS BECAUSE OF DEFENSE. We will have to outscore the Boston’s, Cleveland’s and Orlando’s of the world. They are too big inside, and we can not match up with them in a half court game. Woodson will have to play Teague if Bibby can’t hit the wide open jump shot. MARVIN has to be able to hit that wide open 3 pointer for us to be successful in the playoffs. Jamal Crawford should play more minutes than anyone on this team for his heart and offensive ability. We desperately need someone at the point or the 3 who can score and penetrate. . ,.

I would have to agree JeJe. These clowns just can’t see the forest for the trees. Our problem in the playoffs last year was that we could not score. When the game slows down, that three position is vital, and we can never expect more than 12 points from a guy who is not guarded.

EXACTLY, Rod from CP.

We need Antwawn Jamison or Josh Howard at the 3 — players who put the ball in the basket. Marvin was actually trying to take LBJ off the dribble — LOL.

And is that true about the Cavs partying hard at 3 AM? Like I said, LBJ can drop 60 on us without even blinking. We have no chance of stopping this guy. Then they have Mo who owns us, and Ilgauskas and Delonte are ALWAYS left open. We have no shot tomorrow

Too many ISO’s and one on ones, no offensive sets, ignoring the bench, and not defending the paint.

Rod ,

I see your point about the 3 position being vital from a scoring standpoint. Well, one option is to play Joe at the three and Crawford at the 2.

Also, you don’t guard a guy who doesn’t get shots. Marvin is our fifth option on offense. Now, we may disagree from time to time as to WHY, but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s only the fifth option in the starting five (or should I say, the starting six, counting Crawford).

Unfortunately, Bibby doesn’t have it anymore at the 1, not like he used to. He used to be able to light anybody up for 20+ on the offensive end, any night. Those days are gone. We need Jamal to score more than pass, so playing him at the 1 is a problem as well.

Actually, we’re pretty tough down low when Al and Josh hold their own, and we get decent contributions from Joe Smith and Zaza Pachulia. Unfortunately, we all too often don’t let either guy play enough, and wear down Al while playing Marvin at the 4 whenever Josh is out with foul trouble. It doesn’t work. Marvin just isn’t a 4….

As for Lebron partying hard…he’s one of the best players in the league, and the game was at 7:30 p.m. Dude shot 6-20. Marvin and Joe took turns guarding him, and he still got 10 assists.

Cavs won because we couldn’t stop Delonte and Mo Williams, who combined for nearly 40 points by themselves. But as usual, we’ll hear the whining about Horford not outrebounding and outscoring the opposition’s entire front court by himself…..

Cavs stop Hawks in fourth quarter of 95-84 win

By CHARLES ODUM
Posted Dec 29 2009 9:54PM
ATLANTA(AP) The Cleveland Cavaliers held Atlanta scoreless for almost nine minutes to open the fourth quarter and scored the first 10 points of the period to break open a close game and beat the Hawks 95-84 on Tuesday night.

Mo Williams had 20 points to lead the Cavaliers, who won in their return to Philips Arena since completing a dominant four-game sweep of the Hawks in the second round of last season’s playoffs.

Delonte West had 17 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 15 off Cleveland’s bench. LeBron James had 14 points, 10 assists and five steals but made only 6 of 20 shots from the field.

The Hawks were outscored 20-10 in the fourth quarter.

The Cavaliers led 75-74 entering the final period and stretched the lead to 85-74 before Josh Smith finally ended the Hawks’ drought that lasted 8:48 by scoring with 3:12 remaining. The Hawks were 0 for 10 from the field in the period before the basket.

Frustrations grew on the Atlanta bench during the long scoreless streak. Hawks coach Mike Woodson was called for a technical foul by official Leroy Richardson after complaining about a foul call against Smith with 7:55 remaining in the game.

With 4:40 remaining, Woodson looked to the scorer’s table and asked, “Have we scored this period?” He smiled sadly when his fears were confirmed.

The Hawks’ agony continued as Joe Johnson, who scored 15 points, missed a free throw. Jamal Crawford, who led Atlanta with 26 points, then missed two free throws with 4:08 remaining.

Crawford scored 17 of the Hawks’ 25 points in the second period, including his third 3-pointer of the period only 2 seconds before halftime. But the Cavaliers beat the Hawks on another fast-break basket, with James scoring at the buzzer on a pass from Jamario Moon.
The basket gave James only seven points in the half.

Smith drew his second foul with 1:24 remaining in the opening period and played only 3 minutes in the second period. He had 15 points and eight rebounds.

I wish I had one, really. I don’t know what to say other than you’re right that Bibby is not delivering on either end of the court right now. He has to at least put up the points. He’s a good guy to have when it comes to taking care of the ball, but when he’s missing shots and getting torched on defense, he really hurts us.

Unfortunately, that’s against the best teams, too. If it’s not Mo Williams, it’s Rajon Rondo or Jameer Nelson. Scary.

Funny thing is, I don’t know if Sund will make a move to deal with that, and I think playing Jamal there can have a back-firing effect. And Teague? He’s just not ready yet, especially when he’s getting DNPs like he did tonight.

Damn straight, man. I’m sick of Delonte as it is. I’d put Collins or somebody in JUST for that reason. Next time he drives to the basket on a backdoor cut, lay his ass out. Hell, I bet Othello Hunter would do it….just for a little playing time….

The problem with Ilgauskas is he gets offensive rebounds without even jumping. Dude is 7′3″ with long-ass arms, and he weighs about 280. That, and he’s got a good outside jumper, so when you lay off of him, he strokes a 20-footer on you. Drives me crazy. Thing is, he only got 5 rebounds against us, but 3 of them were on the offensive glass.

And guess what? He scored on every one of them. Dammit.

I’d take that, too. But I wouldn’t do it in Quicken Loans Arena. You’ll get called for the next 25 fouls, even if they’re committed by the Cavaliers.

Teague can probably expect another valuable DNP. Unless of course, we’re getting blown out by 30 at the half, and still by 20 after 3 quarters, 11 minutes, and 4 seconds. Then Teague will be blessed with the final 56 seconds and Jamal Crawford trips over Mike Bibby, who will be dragging himself off the court….

Big Ray

December 30th, 2009

JeJe ,

True. We did have issues with loose balls. Part of that is Zaza, who had his hands on SO many loose ball plays. His problem is that he doesn’t hold the ball high when he gets it. He holds it low, and it inevitably gets poked away. Marvin was bad about it too on a couple of instances. Even Horford kicked the ball away or something on occasion. It happened way too often, and the Cavs capitalized.

It’s crazy, because they actually had more turnovers than we did. We just didn’t hang onto the ball, like you said.

I can’t stand Varejao. But you better believe I’d love to have someone like him on this team. Either we don’t have that guy, or we aren’t playing him. I could see Othello Hunter being that kind of guy, but he sits the pine.

I miss Chills sometimes. He was always around loose balls, and you never had to run a play for him. Yet he got his 11 and 5 or 11 and 6, no matter what, and didn’t turn the ball over. Ugly ass shot, but he was hitting 50-something percent from the field.

We need Bibby to score, because his defense sucks, and the Hawks dont really have an offense for him to run. We need him to step his game up when we go against Rajon Rondo, Jemeer Nelson, and Mo Williams.

Rod,

Stephen Jackson would definitely add another dimension to the team, but I really dont think Woody would know what to do with him. All Jackson’s points would probably come on ISO’s and one on ones. And the rest of the team would stand around. (One reason why Woody likes Marvin is because Marvin doesnt take any shots away from JJ, who is Woody’s favorite player).

I agree that points in the paint are an issue for the Hawks when they play the elite teams. However, if we had any kind of consistent offense that got our players some easy looks, and kept our bigs involved, we would be able to overcome our lack of size against these teams.

I think finishing with a top 3 seed in the East will be an impossibility after tomorrow (today)’s likely loss. We, as someone pointed out earlier, have to play OUR BEST BALL to beat teams like Boston, Orlando, and Cleveland. That Boston win earlier this year was pretty much perfect basketball. We have no offensive sets, we don’t expose matchups (CRAWFORD), and Woodson refuses to call out Joe when Joe inevitably sucks

Rod from College Park

December 30th, 2009

O’Brien,

Stephen Jackson would stand in that corner that Marvin stands in and he would knock down that wide open jumpshot all day. People complain about Joe not passing out of the double team, and even Dominique continues to say that we need to swing the ball to the other side of the floor, but guess who’s on the other side of the floor? That scoring machine Marvin Williams. Joe won’t swing it because he has no confidence that Marvin can score consistently. Plus I think Woodson tells him not to pass to Marvin. Woodson would rather lose with Joe taking shots than Marvin. I can’t say that I blame him.

O'Brien

December 30th, 2009

JeJe,

I think the Hawks matchup best with the Celtics. (Although one reason the Hawks beat Boston in Boston early in the season is because Boston went 1-15 from 3 (although the Hawks were only 4-15 themselves)).

This game was similar to the Orlando game. We look good the first half, but come the second half, our offense struggled mightily. And when plan A fails on offense, plan B is to try harder at plan A.

If we lose tomorrow, I am sure a lot of fans will be jumping off the bandwagon. But lets keep it in perspective. The Hawks will win 50+ games, and probably end up as the #4 seed. The second round of the playoffs will tell us how much Woody is really worth…

JEJE-The Cavaliers signed Shaq to play DHoward one on one. The Hawks supposedly signed JCollins to play Shaq one on one. So you’re absolutely correct about this being a perfect gm to utilize him.

However, this is one of several issues WOODY LOVERS refuse to accept, and that is he’s not an NBA level HC when it comes to utilizing strategy, creating and/or taking advantage of matchups. With Smoove in foul trouble and them playing a frontline combination of Shaq, Varejoa and Ilgaukas, Woodson acted like he didn’t notice how they started dominating us on the boards, especially the OFF boards.

With them slowing the gm down to a crawl, this would’ve been an excellent opportunity to use Collins and Morris. They would have posed a good challenge for Shaq, Varejao and Ilgaukas physically and skill wise. There’s no way Ilgaukas could’ve defended the smooth postup moves of Morris, and neither Shaq, Varejao or Ilgaukas would have posed much of an OFF threat for Morris or Collins.

Collins’ size alone could have effectively kept Shaq out of the lane without double teaming, which would have allowed everyone else to play straight up man to man. Woodson simply has a very limited imagination on both OFF and DEF, and just isn’t very imaginative.

I also think Woodson’s reason for not playing Bibby for most of the 4th qtr was because he thought we’d start hitting our shots and didn’t want to disrupt the excellent overall DEF the team was playing.

As I said in the previous entry from the other day . Crawford is a bonafide Cav killer IF Woody allows him to do it .

Why is it that the hottest man on the team for that game cant get the ball and has to work so hard to get his points as if he has to fight his own tam and coach for a shot .

If Joe is not feeling it why not have Joe bring it the ball up and feed Crawford we all know Joe can play some point. Imagine how Crawford feels that no matter how many shots he makes in a row that his own team wont even look for him and his own coach wont even call a set play for him .

Crawford cannot carry us everynight but when he does have it going we have to know when and how to get him the ball just as we would Joe .Josh,Mike or Al .

If Im out there Im thinking my shot is not falling but jamal is having his way with them so Im gonna drive and dish and try and set him up for some open looks . Instead the entire team decides to shoot themselves out of their funks .

If Odom or Gasol gets hot they get the ball

When Mo Williams was making those shots the Cavs didnt formulate a way to get the ball out of his hands

When that Ryan Anderson was making shots like crazy against us they didnt say hmmm youve reached your shot limit Ryan in the first half .

After Crawford went around them in the first half and started making shots did anyone see how they started doubling him way out top on the pick and roll we should certainly have play where we can use that to our advantage seeing as it makes it 4 on 3 .

I just dont get it …

They had a bad night, more to the point, a bad fourth quarter. Neither team played particularly well. For the record, they played a sight better at home against Cleveland than the Lakers. So some of you might just want to back off. Now, try to keep this in mind, the Cleveland Cavs are a team that loves to get inside your head and take your focus off the game. They’re absolutely classless, they’re physical, and they will do whatever they have to try to intimidate or atagonize you so that your focus isn’t on the game anymore. They’re the best I’ve seen at doing that since the Detroit bad boys and a team that is still gettting used to the limelight of a national stage is going to be particularly vulnerable to their antics, but if Atlanta can play their game and keep their heads, they can beat Cleveland, or anyone else for that matter, but in the case of Cleveland, it’s not about X’s and O’s or even talent. To beat that team, you’ve got to keep your focus. When Atlanta’s able to do that, they can show Cleveland the promise of hell.

It never ceases to amaze me how much time Lebron James can spend on another teams court after a game is over, when they win.

Woody’s unwillingness to expose matchups and to just pound the ball to Joe should get him fired. That is NOT how you beat elite teams.

As we stand, we have no shot of beating the big 3 in a Series and probably the top 3 teams in the West we couldn’t beat either. We really need to trade Marvin for a small forward with scoring ability like Jamison. The ONLY improvement over last year is we will finish with more wins but still lose in the 2nd round. Joe has no heart. He is not a number 1, especially not against the elite teams. Josh at least plays with a lot of heart and I like that. Let Joe go and perhaps try to sign Bosh or a real center so we can put Horford at PF, Josh at SF and a center. Crawford is good against mediocre defenders as well, just like joe. GEEMACK-you’re right, it can be said, but that doesn’t mean it’s always true. Woody has used basically the same coaching approach and philosophy since his arrival. The basic improvement we’ve experienced from yr to yr has coinsided with the acquistion and/or improvement of players like JJ, Smoove, Chills, Horford, Bibby, Flip and Crawford. That’s why the annual improvement we’ve experienced each yr has always been gradual rather than prolific.

Although last nights gm was a test, tonights gm will be the real test for this team. After losing a winnable gm, and seeing the atrategy and adjustments they made to shut us down, it’s time to see what adjustments and strategy we’ll come up with to counter them on the road. This 2gm back to back with Cleveland is a snapshot of what we can expect during the upcoming playoffs.

It’s been a constant over the last few yrs that we can start out strong and get a sizeable lead playing team ball, but after teams make adjustments we start to struggle we ALWAYS seem to fall back on WOODY BALL, which has yet to produce anything but frustration and isolation(pun intended). When key players like JJ, Smoove and Bibby aren’t producing, Woodson has to get it in his one dimensional mind that it’s not beneficial to the team or the individual players to keep riding lame horses. Bad is bad no matter if it’s a key veteran player, a rookie PG, or a vet Big that’s been sitting at the end of the bench doing it.

This is why our bench seldom does well against top teams. Riding the backs of lame horses, or exhausted ones, and resorting to WOODY BALL, hasn’t proven to be a successful formula for us. H0W MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO WITNESS OPPOSING PG’S COME IN OUR HOUSE AND LIGHT US UP BEFORE WE REALIZE AND/OR ACCEPT THAT BIBBY’S FEW ATTRIBUTES AREN’T SUFFICIENT ENOUGH TO OVERCOME HIS LIABILITIES, ESPECIALLY ON DEF? His skills, stamina and overall production have deminished, and this team needs most, the things he does least.

Bibby lovers always love to site how the OFF seems to function better with him in the gm. Yet, they pretend not to notice how the DEF doesn’t function much at all when he brings him matador approach to DEF in the gm. Even Woodson kept him on the bench most of the 4th qtr last night because he didn’t want to disrupt the excellent DEF we were playing without him.

IT’S DOWNRIGHT STUPID TO HAVE ONE OF THE NBA’S QUICKEST, FASTEST AND MOST ATHLETIC TEAMS, ESPECIALLY OUR FRONTLINE, RUN PRIMARILY BY ONE OF THE NBA’S SLOWEST, LEAST ATHLETIC, DEFENSIVELY CHALLENGED, NONE PENETRATING PG’S. We lost last nights gm with Bibby scoring 2pts on 1-7shooting, handing out 7assists, and getting 3 rebs in 27+MPG. Neither Bibby or the team benefitted from that performance. If we’d played Teague those same mins, do you think he would have done any worse? At least he would have benefited from the experience, which would prove to be beneficial for the team in the longrun.
