Hey, folks-
Hope all are well. A few weeks back, after the Hawks reached Game 10, I asked you to predict the next 10. Some of you responded, and I am coming back with your winner. It is Dan, largely on the strength of a fairly prescient (I thought) prediction.
Here were the rules. I asked you to predict the Hawks’ record over the next 10 games (worth 10 points), the outcome of each game (one point for each game) and then to make a prediction (worth somewhere between 1-10 points, based on the likelihood of the prediction coming to pass).
Dan missed on the 10-game record (I think he picked 7-3; they went 6-4), got five games right, but correctly predicted that Josh Smith would have four double-doubles and Joe Johnson would have three 30-point games. For going with a combination prediction and giving a specific number for Smith and Johnson’s double-doubles and 30-point games, respectively, I gave him eight points for a total of 13. (Only Big Al correctly predicted the Hawks would go 6-4, but didn’t include the game-by-game count and also missed on his prediction, that Al Horford would have eight double-doubles and lead the team in scoring in three times.)
So, Dan, if you want to e-mail me (I e-mailed you, but I haven’t heard back from you), we can figure out some sort of award for your prognostication skills.
Looking back, some of you had a little bit too much Kool-Aid after their 8-2 start. Most went with 7-3 with a couple 8-2’s, one 9-1 and one 10-0. (Way to go strong, Ramon!)
Interestingly, five of the seven people who picked every game accurately forecast the Hawks losing to Detroit. Everyone predicted the Hawks to beat New York, and only Ramon called the Hawks beating Dallas.
Manny T came so close on a pretty strong prediction that would have won him the contest, that Marvin Williams would have a 30-point game. Marvin had 29 against Houston. I had scored that a 10 given the way he’d been playing to that point.
So, we’ll try this again. I’m asking for the Hawks’ record over the next 10 games, the outcome of each game (W or L is enough) and one prediction. Predicting the record is worth 10 points, each game is worth one point and the prediction will be judged somewhere between 1-10. You have to put it on the blog by tipoff against Chicago Wednesday.
A few things – you may have noted that New York beat Portland Monday night, though the Blazers were without Greg Oden and Nate McMillan, Rudy Fernandez, Travis Outlaw and Nicolas Batum.
Allen Iverson came back Monday before a full house. He kissed the 76ers logo at center court when he was introduced before the game, but Philly lost. How do tyou think this turns out?
The Hawks are sixth in the nba.com power rankings. Would you say this is accurate? Where would you put them?

What do you think the impact of the Tim Donaghy book and “60 Minutes” report will be?

Truth Serum ,
That was a nice post, and I agree with a lot of it. The only part I don’t agree with is the idea that a lot of the rebounds Horford and Zaza get are because the defender has vacated the area. Horford actually does power up against a lot of guys on the boards. But rebounding is not all about power.
It’s also about position. Zaza doesn’t overpower a lot of guys, but he gets good position, especially on the offensive glass. Horford also gets good position and blocks out. In fact, that is what has made Smoove a better rebounder this year than he was the last. This year, he is blocking out better and getting himself into better position to get rebounds.
In fact, there is an article in the Sporting News where Al Horford is ranked 35 among the 50 best players in the game today. I read the magazine version where another perennially good NBA big man called Horford a beast, somebody who crashes the glass hard. Can’t remember precisely who it was…

Truth- word up, is what I meant. I am not trying to argue you out of your position, but just watching his body language at times during the game, he seems to get down on himself. As we both agree he has the athletic ability, he is mature for a young guy, and he works really hard. I just don’t think I can fully give his inconsistent play a pass, based on his place in the offense. Yes, it does effect him, but we have seen Josh grow into his role in the offense. and Al, too.

Ray, Thanks, I thought I was clear that rebounds was about position, I used the word territory. Position is a default word where to me territory connotes combat.
Yes, there are many who have an opinion concerning Horford and there are a few who think is a very good player. So do I. I Just dont see him as a center but as a power forward and a lot like Dennis Rodman.
Yes, hed make my top 50 list too.
I would not call him a beast. Howard is a beast!
Id call Horford a Blue Collar Worker. Comes to work every day. No days off from him.

Marvin definitely doesn’t have the confidence yet. He shows flashes, but injury brings him back down to earth. He’ll grow out of it, but right now the kid is scared to really be aggressive because he’ll either get hurt or in foul trouble and in Woody’s dog house. He’s got alot of pressure to perform now that we use 3 guards at times. His shooting is directly related to not having consistent touches in the flow of the game where he can build from them. If/when he gets hot someone else starts shooting or he gets benched. He never has a chance to really get rolling.
Woody’s bad about subbing when someone finally catches fire. Leave them in until Nique claim’s “heat check”. That’s when they’re back to their old self again.

Although I love the game, Donaghy stated the obvious – the fix is in when it comes to the playoffs, its all about big market teams(or players) and long series. Not totally rigged but the NBA wants the most tv time with its biggest stars that it can get without being a total sham.

So then Daniel with that in mind perhaps Marvins Metamorphosis is at hand. Im just saying Its to early to make a definitive conclusion about his ability or contributions. He doesnt hurt us. We just expect more.
So does Marvin.
Growth and Maturity come from an internal boiling. Josh did went through it and is still going through it to some degree. He boiled over and attacked Woodson when the real issue was hes need to find his role and stay with in it.
Its Marvin’s time now to go through it. Hell come out of it, advantage hawks.

Ken S,
My predictions are 6-4 over the next 10, losing at Toronto, at Chicago, at Denver, and Cleveland. Also, I think Jeff Teague will have 4 games with DNP CD, and Horford will have 6 doubles.
As far as Marvin is concerned, for somebody who is 6′9″ and athletic, he sure gets his shot blocked a lot (sometimes by smaller guys). And he is very clumsy in the paint. I dont think that is related to aggressiveness.
Truth, Nice post about Marvin. However, as long as Woody/JJ/Crawford and Bibby and even Josh are here, Marvin will never be more than a 5th option. Consequently, I just hope that this is not how he will be for the next 2+ seasons, because at his price, he needs to be more consistent, regardless of his role in the offense (in my opinion).

Truth-Serum and Big Ray,
Big Ray I will go ahead and make you correct on your prediction. Truth, while we do agree on many points such as Ken Strickland and the Bubba Crew, we don’t agree on Marvin. Marvin is a good rebounder and free throw shooter. That’s it. He is not a good defender. Notice this year whenever we have played a great offensive player who plays the 3 or the 2 Woody puts Joe on them because Marvin can’t get the job done (See Granger, Carmelo, Pierce, Carter……). His handles are below average. He cannot change directions while dribbling and is really too clumsy to ever develop excellent handles. He is only asked on this team to hit wide-open jump shots, or penetrate against defenses that do not check him. I don’t buy that maturity crap. If you are an above average player, you will step up to the challenge, and prove it. This is his 4th or 5th year in the league. How long will it take? He has no aggressiveness, no post game at 6′9 (with a 7 foot wingspan). Can you honestly tell me that if you substituted Danny Granger, Rudy Gay, or Stephen Jackson for Marvin in our starting lineup, they would be our 6 best scoring option? Marvin has proven in practice and in the games that he is no better than that, so why would Woodson run plays for him? We always hear this what happened when Joe got hurt last year mess. We were playing two of the worst teams in the league when that happened. He has done next to nothing in the playoffs for us. We could have given Matt Barnes 3 to 4 million a year to do what Marvin does. I my opinion we should cut our losses while or if we can.

Truth Serum ,
I hear ya. I think Horford has more offensive capability than Rodman ever did, but if he ever comes close to being the DPOY-level player that Rodman was EVERY year…I’ll be pleased. By the way, I feel that he is a PF as well. I just think he’s one of the few PFs in the league who can truly, effectively play center on MOST nights. Obviously it’s a struggle against the biggest and the best (Shaq, Dwight, Yao, etc). Fortunately, there aren’t all that many of those.

Truth,
I take your points regarding Marvin. There’s an anology that I’ve used in the past that reflects my perspective on Marvin and the Hawks (I’m a Carolina guy, so I have a ‘natural’ affinity for Marvin). Sund’s a baker who’s charged with producing a cake of some character (i.e., the O’Brien trophy), and he’s got to assemble the appropriate ingredients and mix them properly if he’s to have a reasonable chance of successfully executing the cake. Between he and the previous baker (Billy), they’ve been ‘assembling & mixing’ for several years now. At some point (hopefully relatively soon) he (Sund) must determine if the ingredients he has assembled – and the mixer – are likely to successfully get him to an agreeable cake. If he decides not, then it’s incumbent upon him to swap out either an ingredient or three, or the mixer (i.e., the HC), or BOTH. Marvin has been in this mixing bowl now for 4+ years, so Sund and the organization should know well what Marvin brings (and is likely to bring) to the cake he’s charged with baking. If he decides that Marvin isn’t likely to be – in his kitchen – that ingredient that eventually gets him the flavoring he needs in the cake, he’s gotta move him. That wouldn’t mean the baker believes Marvin’s not likely to be just the right ingredient somewhere else, just means the baker has decided it’s just not likely to ‘happen’ here, and within the ’schedule’ established for completing the cake.
I’m not baking the cake, so I’ve no idea what ’schedule’ – if any – Sund has been given by his clients (ASG) to execute the cake. But I can’t imagine he is allowed to give his ingredients and the mixer indefinite time to achieve ultimate success. He therefore surely can’t afford to fall too in love with a half dozen extra eggs (i.e., Marvin) and what they bring to the mix, when he may need a couple additional sticks of butter (i.e., maybe a Rudy Gay). He’s got to think about swapping the extra half dozen eggs for the butter he needs, otherwise he won’t ever successfully execute the cake. That I think is – or at least should be – a non-starter for his clients. Marvin could be the odd half dozen eggs out if he doesn’t make a more substantial contribution this year.
RLP

4:17 pm
NEWKID:
That is the strangest analogy I have ever seen. If you use that analogy then I guess each season could be compared to individual cakes. In the case of the Hawks the baker at the time threw out everything in the kitchen and started anew. Each cake so far has been an improvement over the last one. We have even brought in a new baker. Ingredients have been added and deleted but so far the product has improved with each new cake. Sometimes during the baking of the cake new ingredients have been added. I would imagine that it sometimes gets harder and harder to find the proper ingredients. And to bake a perfect cake you not only have to be good but there is also an element of luck. You have to adjust to the lack of the perfect ingredient by using other ingredients that can overcome the lack of that one prefect ingredient that would put the cake on the winners stand. But is continues to be fascinating to watch the cake bake.
Great job.

newkid,
Great explanation. I just wish Sund would have read the blogs the last two years. Maybe he would have re-evaluated his stance on Marvin when Gay, Artest and Ariza were available for less. I am really concerned that Marvin is going to show the rest of the league that he is not that good a player, and we will not be able to trade him. He obviously still has some people fooled, so maybe we can do something with him now or in the near future. The Rudy Gay move would have been perfect for us, and would have paid off for us in the playoffs this year, and really protected us next year if Joe decided to leave.

You can see it in the last couple of games…the swagger is coming back…the confidence in the jump shot is coming back…one he gets it all back…LOOK OUT!!! The change of pace with Teague…adds yet another dimension to this high flying team!!!!!
I think 7-3 would have been more realistic…losses to Den,Utah, and the Cavs…but after I heard Smoove on ESPN speaking of the TOP THREE with a lot of humility and respect…I said what the heck…these Hawks know what they are about…they may be posed for another big run. Some think it is the coach, some Marvin, some Al, but for me the weakest link in our team is Bibby. Jamal gets most of the left over Bibby minutes but is not the answer to our pg woes. The lack of defense by our guards is evident in almost every game.
As mentioned before if the opposing team has two quick guards all we can do is wave our hands and hope Josh picks them up.
For over half of every game the combination of Bibby and JJ automatically slows down the up tempo style we are capable of.
As we all know our 3 pt shooting guards are not consistent. In fact were just not that good but we seem to love that shot on the road and throw games away. A good penetrating guard that can dish the ball and push the offense would be a perfect fit for this team.
It looks to me we will stick with Teague and play with the guards we have. Teague has not shown great or even average defensive skills but there is always hope.
At the end of the day it seems like we will be playing with the hand Sund and the owners dealt us. 10-20 million dollars short of the contending teams. Accepting this fact, if I had to choose a change with the most impact for the cheapest price it would not be the coach, Marvin, or Al.
We need a PG that will not give the ball to JJ and Crawford when they are cold. We need a pg that will give the ball to JJ and Jamal when they are hot. We need a pg that will push the ball and take advantage of two of the fastest post players in the game. We need a pg that will get the ball to our big’s in a position to score and feed them much more.
I am not saying our guards are bad, in fact the are good but I will say they shoot us to wins and losses without using all of the potential around them. With better balance and less jump shooting we could avoid a few of the losses.

TRUTH SERUM-I’m flattered by your admission that the few times you’ve made intelligent and insightful comentary is because you were attempting to converse on my level. Good for you.
I want to see if JSmith gets the ALaw treatment tonight, which usually happens after a bench player has a good gm. Bibby always seems to struggle against Chicago and the combination of size, speed and quickness of their guards. It won’t do much good to switch as he’ll be overmatched no matter who he ends up guarding. So, let him play his man straight up and let Horford and Smoove back him up.
Horford will definitely be motivated tonight, which could be a definite advantage for us. This could be an excellent opportunity to see whether RMorris can have another solid performance and provide an inside scoring option. That’s something we could definitely use when we go up against certain teams throughout the season, and it needs to be explored sometime during the season, why not now.
Another side note. When we play Cleveland, will JCollins be allowed to use his size, height and experience against Shaq at any time, or will he continue being wasted on the bench?

RLP,
Sorry, but my mind works things out in a strange sort of twisted way sometimes. Only ONE cake – Larry O’Brien. EVERY YEAR; LARRY O’BRIEN. Only one group of ingredients, one mixer, and one baker can successfully execute the cake in a given year. There’s no SINGLE recipe’, just A SINGLE result. Luck helps a bunch.
Diesel, is that you from Hawksquawk using the ‘Rod from College Park’ moniker? Marvin, even if it turns out he is indeed the extra half dozen eggs we don’t need here, is likely to be just the right fit somewhere in the league. Wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him as an essential ‘ingredient’ in some successfully executed cake down the road. Hope he is, and hope it’s here, but from ‘my’ kitchen he’s not looking as good as desirable here in Hawks blue.
