Greetings, all-
We’ve got a pretty good test for a number of reasons.
You’d have to think this is a game the Hawks should win, particularly if they’re torqued off about how they finished last night. The Hawks are a better team than Philly, plus the Sixers are missing point guard Lou Williams. Philly has lost eight of 10.
One thing to watch will be how the Hawks respond from the patterns of their second-half debacle, particularly how well they move the ball in the half court.
On to the game.

I would really be worried if Hawks lose again tonight. Really worried.
Woody might have lost this team. If he can’t draw up effective plays for a team he has coached for five years, if he can’t reign in an out of control JJ hell bent on getting a max contract, Woody might have lost this team. And if that is the case, we all see why he has not been extended yet. The next two games are really crucial for Hawks psyche. Hawks cannot afford multiple losing streaks. They just need to share and move the damn ball!

Clyde ,
I saw your sly jibe on the last blog. You ask me how many points Horford had last night, I ask YOU how many times he got to shoot the ball. The man got three shot attempts. Show me a guy who can score 15-20 points off of that, and I’ll show you a guy who is getting the ball enough and getting to the line. Which would mean more than three shot attempts. Don’t try to be slick, man. And screw Alabama….

nothing new here. the hawks have one of the worst, unimaginative half court offenses in the league. need to run more plays for marvin. horford has been mia the last two games.
what the hell happened to the defense. philly getting easy dunks and layups only tell me the hawks are lacking focus and desire. they need to get on it.
josh smith’s talent is to tantalizing. he teases us with small stretches of brilliance. if he could do it more consistently he’s easily one of the top ten players in the league.
teague has looked good in limited minutes.
bibby has shot the ball well early. but once he starts missing like he has been he has nothing else to go to. besides being a defensive liability.

When is the last time someone on this team provided a spark off the bench and had 20 points? Can’t Teague be that guy? Why will Woodson trust Marvin over Teague? Teague hits a beautiful layup last night and immediately is taken out. The guy is faster than 95 % of the league. Let him stay in. We’re playing a horrific team tonight which will still challenge us hard, but we will still win. Let Teague play 20 minutes, and rest Bibby’s legs.

Something that pisses me off that no one talks about is Joe Johnson’s rebounding. 5.5 rebounds in 38 mpg? That is pathetic. He never boxes anyone out. I watch him after shots are taken just standing under the basket. Last night i watched Vince get an easy tip-in because Joe just stood there.
At 6″7 and 240 pounds he should be able to battle some PF’s out there, yet he gets 5.5 boards a game. This number needs to go up for someone his size.
These next 2 games are must-wins.
Woodson, use your bench. Let Teague get a spark. Play Collins. The guy started 2 years in a row in the Finals vs. Shaq & Duncan. I want to see some energy off this bench. Don’t let Marvin play 35 minutes just because he’s 6″9

Orlando is just way too deep to not go to the Finals this year.
I mean, they got Anderson, AJ, and Bass — players that don’t get big minutes, who can all put up serious numbers when needed. This team doesn’t even need Shard and Vince to score much. This team is just freaking loaded. Did anyone even think during the game that ORL didn’t even have Jameer (an ALL STAR)? Orlando’s 2nd lineup could beat most teams in this league and I mean it.
We have no shot of beating ORL in a series at all. Vince and Shard can hibernate and let Dwight do most of the work, and when teams start hounding him, the Magic have deadly shooters on all cylinders.
We CAN, however, beat Boston and Cleveland.
Kudos to the whole Orlando organization for building such a superb team. Fatigue last night? Yeah right. When you’re 12 deep and have players who know their roles and can hit 3’s from everywhere, you’re going to be this good.

I still don’t understand Woody not calling a Timeout during that ORL run during the 3rd quarter. I was like, “when is this guy gonna stop the run?”
WTf was said during halftime? It was obvious ORL did NOT want to lose 2 division games in a row, especially after they got completely robbed in that MIA game (should’ve been offensive-goaltending on Beasley). I think 99 % of the other diehard fans on this board could’ve motivated the players at halftime and said the right thing.
Woodson could’ve simply said what Doc Rivers said to his team during our playoff series in 2007: “You gotta hit them down, and when they get up, you gotta hit them down again”
Comments like that should really stick with players. Not this “guys, I don’t care about offense. Just play defense, ok?” or comments similar to that which I’m sure Woody implies. Ha.
Talk to all you Hawks Friends after the game

Yeah, he ain’t doin’ much. But they aren’t giving him the ball, either. Dude has had a total of 7 shot attempts in the last game and a half. What do you expect him to do with that? Nobody can score that way.
It’s kinda like Stan Van Gundy getting on Dwight Howard before the game, saying he has to be more aggressive. I look, and Vince Carter is the one taking all the shots. Dwight was taking like 9 shots in one game and maybe 6 or 7 in another. You don’t get the shots, you don’t get the points. Maybe Stan was trying to say something to his team….

Bibby doesn’t need to be playing 40 minutes a game at almost any point these days. He’s got a lot of wear and tear on those legs, and his recent injury in and of itself means he shouldn’t be pounding the floor that much. He’s playing well tonight, though…

I don’t know if y’all felt this way too, but to me that was a really sloppy game. The box score doesn’t really bear out to me how many poor decisions and bad shots were taken by both teams. Joe Johnson easily played his worst game of the year. Nice to see them get a W, but this now makes three straight games where they haven’t played with the energy they had to start the season.

Good to be back in the winning column. We didn’t play great, a bit sloppy at times, but we beat a team we were supposed to beat. Good mixture of contributions. Bibby, J Crawford, and Josh all had good games. Horford had a pretty good night as well. JJ’s struggles continued through tonite’s game, but didn’t cost a W, as was the case in previous games.
Feel’s like it’s been forever since we’ve won a game – so I’m happy.

Observations from tonight:
1) Great game from Crawford. Wow, this is what I wanted from him last night’s game
2) Joe Johnson pissed me off this entire game. The guy is not a team player. He seems to prefer hogging the ball and keeping games close than being a team player and winning every game. Or at least that’s what I’ve seen in the past few years. Pass the damn ball and stop wasting possessions
3) Marvin Williams cannot dribble a basketball for over 4 seconds without some egregious repercussion occurring
4) MORE IMPORTANT: WHERE THE HELL WAS THE BENCH IN THE 4TH? What would SVG have done here based on last night? He would’ve had ZaZa, Joe Smith, Mo, and Teague in to start the 4th. WTF IS GOING ON HERE? TEAGUE HAD SOLID MINUTES AND 4 POINTS IN THE FIRST HALF. WHY THE HELL DO MARVIN AND HORFORD PLAY THE LAST 10 MINUTES OF THIS GAME? Woodson OBVIOUSLY wants a new contract and is not looking at how these minutes will destroy our team in coming months. We have a brutal, and I mean BRUTAL January coming up in just weeks, and we are using our starters (4+Jamal) against PHILLY? TRUST ZaZa! You just signed the guy to a nice 4 year deal. Joe Smith is as seasoned as they come. Don’t let Marvin play the last 10 minutes when you have nice bench pieces. Marvin will never be a major factor on offense because he is the 5th option on a team that is 11 up and 4 down so quit hating on Marvin, hell he plays good D every night and he hits the boardsHe had 9 rebs tonight.. The real problem with the Hawks are Woodson and Joe Johnson…Joe Johnson blew the game against orlando by hogging the ball..U talk smack about Marvin? How about Joe Johnson slow a– moves to the basket that eats up the shot clock and stops the ball. Joe needs to step up..Becasue really he never has..

We won but it was ugly…. Marvin is whatever. Wake me up when he has a good 5 games in a row. Right now I would settle for 3 in a row, something….. Joe calls out the team earlier in the season for being selfish but he is the epitome of everything he said about the team. Dribble dribble dribble head fake head fake and shoot over multiple defenders…….. Ol Woodrow needs to start benching his starters for sloppy play just like he does the guys on the bench.

There are four teams in the East with double digit wins – the big three and the Hawks. No other team in the East has a better record. The Cavs would have had a better record but they lost to the Bobcats. Only the Suns and the Lakers have a better record in the league. The big three in the East is now the big four. Two quality will lose in the second round of the playoffs. What a great year Hawks fans are being treated to. They are winning games on the road that in past years they would have lost. Tell me who is not excited about this team? They came back on the road after a terrible performance at home against another elite team. The difference in this years team from last years team is the continuing maturation of Josh Smith and the addition of Jamal Crawford.
On another note personally I would prefer to trade Jason Collins for Dwight Howard. I mean if people want to make dream trades why shouldn’t we get the best deal possible. It is just as likely as the last proposed trade. Meaning less than zero.

A comment on J.Johnson:
It’s really a good thing that he’s not a rookie. Otherwise he would get yanked when he has an abysmal night as he did last evening and again tonight. Also back to back below par games might cause us to lose 1 or 2 games early on and that may hurt our seeding come play-off time. At least once tonight he did 24 (1 per sec./ exaggeration) shake and bakes at the key area…went nowhere…4 teammates yawned…and he shot a fall away/fade/step back/air ball as the shot clock expired.
My point – Jeff Teague played 5 min.
Our starting pt guard has a bad ankle – we are 2nd game of bck to bck – we win going away – and he only gets ‘5′ min. Obtuse no longer defines MW. “Rookie Slayer” !

Listened to the game on the radio tonight. Great win, especially with JJ in foul trouble. I thought the substitutions in the first half, were very good by Woodson. He got a lot of quality minutes out of Joe Smith and Teague. I even liked some of Woodson’s substitutions in the 2nd half. If I trust the Yahoo GameChannel Woodson even benched JJ in the 4th for stretches. If that is true, (someone correct me if I’m wrong) then that was the type of move I was looking for last night against Orlando from Woodson. JJ was dribbling to much and slowing down the offensive. Jamal and Bibby were hot and its good to have Marvin on the floor for defensive purposes. JJ’s a big boy and he will get the message. The HAWKS need him to score 20+ and dish out 5 assists per game. He wasn’t doing that tonight, so Crawford should take his minutes. (especially if Bibby is hot!)
I would have liked to see more of Teague, but Bibby was on fire! If Jeff T. starts making his jumpshot, I’m sure we will start to see him in the 2nd half of games.

Teague has to make a jump shot or two to keep the D honest. Until he is willing to take an occasional shot and make it, his minutes will be given to Jamal, and for good reason. But its a long season. za za shouldn’t be playing any minutes. until he gets from being nailed to the floor, he should keep his spot warm on the bench. i still don’t know why did we cut garret siler? also, can the hawks find some playing time for jason collier? is he having trouble in areas or something? what we are getting out of za za, collier should be on the floor. pachuia is wasting valuble time when we either need to trade for big man such as amarie stodamauer. as least he and collier ia s active around the basket. za za plays like he has a stave stuck up his back. if the ball didn’t come his way he would never make an effort to get it.

moboman says: “Teague has to make a jump shot or two to keep the D honest. Until he is willing to take an occasional shot and make it, his minutes will be given to Jamal, and for good reason.”
That may be woody’s thinking, but i doubt it..He just have what “ant banks” says that most of us have about teague, but woody has it with his starters..And thats a man crush, lol…
I love da fact that we have a coach who is a “players coach”,and he should stick by his starters when they have a bad night,he really should.
But,when they are consistently, unconsistent, and he does not show his displeasure during the game with them like he does his bench and start putting their butts on the bench for bad, selfish play, then he will coach himself out of a contract..
Woody, will over use his starters like he is doing jj right now. And,jj will become mysteriously sick, and sit out a few games like he did before all star break last year, and, come back after a few games and shoot lights out..Woody,does not care, its playing for his food time, and he wants it all..
But,what he does not know is that,he is wearing and tearing down his starters, and it is they who will shut him out (like they do now),but,as they get tired from logging so many heavy minutes now..
Player developement is what this guy has no clue of..
None what so ever..
What teague is lacking now is experience and a shot like bibbs. But,you can’t find too many rooks or 1st,2nd,or even 3rd year PG’s who do right now,but what teague lacks is far outgained by what he brings with his game..And,he has more positives than bibbs does with his game right now..
For one,he has 2 healthy ankles……….
2.He has super speed to go around defenders and break down defenses and drive by opponents for easy lay in’s..
3.He is better with one on one defense than bibbs, and he has quick hands which help him with his steals..
4.He plays the inside out game, instead of looking for his buddys to dribble, dribble, dribble, back them down, head fake a few times and shoot,JT passes the ball down low, inside, and lets the bigs play from there..If its not there, they pass it out and he sets up the wingers or himself for drives or close in shots..
I bet,he reads these blogs, and i have to say mr.teague, you have an upbeat attitude considering everything we say on here defending what we see is wasted time with u on the bench..
Keep the attitude up,and continue to play your game. We know as well as u know, that, your a rookie and you have vets ahead of you with minutes being shared by them..But,its just our frustration by this coach that we have seen over the years and the way we have lost out on the developement of our PG’s under him..
And,we don’t want u to go in that same direction..Thats all…
OK??
Nite all..

Ken,
Growing up in Marietta, I often heard about the legendary Blue Devil and Supersonic career of a sharp shooter named Dale Ellis. I attended his basketball camps and once “beat him” at a game called bump. That was always fun.
But, Dominique Wilkins was my hero. He was a man, who rattled rims inside the Omni, the Boston Garden, and every NBA arena he walked into. Wilkins was the greatest athlete I have ever seen. As a kid, I would religiously watch the Hawks on our cable-less TV. The picture used to fade in and out at times. But, no matter how cloudy the reception became, Dominique was always visible. I can remember trying to emulate his dunks on my Nerf hoops. Unfortunately for those thin plastic rims, I often got so excited that I would destroy them, Darrell Dawkins style.
Dominique had what they call “once in a lifetime” talent. He was Babe Ruth to me. The Wilkins led Hawks may not have won an NBA title, but I’m thankful to have grown up watching #21 play the game.

If you hadn’t watched the game & went off of these comments, you woulda sworn we lost by 20 plus. I watched this entire game & although we weren’t 100% sharp, we were never in danger of losing this game & won by 14. Last yr, we lose this game. This yr we took care of business. Would I like to see Marvin play better? Yes. Could we get better ball movement? Yes. Would I like to see more Teague? Yes. But yall know what? We don’t need Marvin scoring 15 a game this yr, that’s why we got Crawford. Ball movement is getting better outside of Joe & Jamal.
As for Teague, homie isn’t running this team when he’s on the floor & he’s a liability on offense. He looks hesitant at times. I’m fine with how Woody is playin him so far. Hawks fans RELAX. This is one of our best starts in team history. Calm down.

2- josh comes out the first 3 minutes parked 15 feet from the basket looking like he is sleep
walking, woody quickly pulls him. it appears that the team is getting sick of jj. it appeared
that josh & woody could be fueding again but josh is realizing that woody holds the minutes. it seems that the team wants to have an offense that involes ball movement if they are going to contend for anything. this will be great

Charles Barkley said last year during the first round serise with the Heat that the Hawks had to make a decision as to whether it was Joe’s team or Josh’s team. That comment takes on greater significance when you look at the current state of affairs regarding Joe’s play.
Josh wants and needs to have a running offense to be at his maximum effectiveness; Joe (and Woodson) prefere a half court offense because he has to guard the other team’s point guard/ best score as well as produce 20+ ppg.Joe has been an All Star and highly compensated player playing in this system and the team has steadily improved over the last 4 years of his enure in Atlanta.
However, this year there are bigger expectations coming from the national media and the local fan base that are focusing scrutiny on the style of play that has been used. The blow outs against top ranked teams were not just bad in and of themselves it was how and why the Hawks lost that is building up some pressure for changes in the way the team operates, inspite of the overall success.
Case in point: for years management and staff has been in lockstep on the subject of Al being a center. Yet in every nationally televised game the commentators all say Al is playing out of position albeit quite well. And tthe beat down inflicted by Dwight Howard didn’t help the team’s argument -neither did Sam Dalembert’s block party last night.
Is the team better than last year-yes,so far. will it continue to grow and improve-that is the question that is yet to be answered but Joe’s recent swoon doesn’t create a sense of optimism.

Good analysis. So far this year their has been more ball movement than in the past. There has also been far less ISO Joe. In one sense I think the good ball movement has actually helped JJ when we have gone into the ISO Joe game. He has been more successful in driving to the basket because teams are aware that if they drop off the other players we have guys who can hit open shots. And when the team does get into the passing game during a half court offensive set they have demonstrated some beautiful passing. But elimination of the ISO Joe will not happen completely. The key is to minimize the times it does occur. And for all of those who are so opposed to it there should be some recognition that it is fairly effective – at times. That does not constitute an endorsement however.

The ISO-JOE or the ISO anyone is the biggest single threat that this team has to being a viable contender in the east. They spent the first half of that Orlando game whopping them like red headed step kids because they were playing as a team. They stopped working their offense and started playing as individuals. It’s not just ISO-JOE it’s ISO-JOSH, ISO-AL, ISO-Marv (on those rare occaisions that Marvin tries to play offense…). But Joe has to set the example. You can’t stand around after a bad loss talking about whether a team is a contender or a pretender after you were the black hole that the ball decended into more often than not. If Joe wants the Hawks to play like an elite team, he’s going to have to be an elite player, making the timely pass as well as the big shot. He’s the captain, setting the example is HIS responsibility.

Watching the Hawks the first 16 games of the season, I have noticed some positives and negatives with the team. And as far as Marvin Williams is concerned, he is averaing 10 points and 5 rebounds per game. Those numbers are close to Ron Artests’s 12 points and 5 boards, and Lamar Odom’s 9 points and 8 boards per game. When you have as many scorers on a team as the hawks or lakers some people are not going to get shots and in either the Hawks case or Lakers it seems to be Marvin here and Lamar and Ron Artest in L.A. And another thing if Marvin played for the Knicks, Timberwolves, or Nets, he would average 20 plus easy because he would be the first, second, or even third option. I will get to the positives and negatives of this team in a later post.

Big Ray, I’m glad Josh Smith finally listened to someone — Coach Woody, an AAU coach, Harry the Hawk… whoever — and learned what kind of player he’s built to be. Here’s hoping we don’t see him revert to jacking up ill-advised threes, trying to go coast-to-coast dribbling behind his back before throwing no-look passes into the third row, etc.. He needs to be crashing the rim on both ends and harassing the hell out of the other team’s best offensive threat like he’s been doing.
Until this season, I’ve dreaded seeing Smith in the game to the point where I wanted us to keep Chill and let Smith go elsewhere prior to Childress’s signing with the team in Greece. Smith’s always had a world of talent/potential, but his two cent head kept getting in the way. Glad to see he’s doing consistent damage now.

EJH ,
I don’t know about that. Who does Marvin take the ball away from in NY? Al Harrington? Don’t think so. Wilson Chandler? Ehhh..maybe.. He may average 16+, but not 20+ easily .
In Minnesota, he has to share time with Corey Brewer, who though lacking Marvin’s shooting ability, is still managing Marvin’s level of stats, and Ryan Gomes, who is a bit tougher.
In New Jersey, second year man Chris Douglas-Roberts is getting over 17 and 5 a game, while rookie Terence Williams averages the same as Marvin.
I think Marvin could do more if featured more, but he’s clearly a role player on this team.
It isn’t just Jamal Crawford that is taking up some offense. It’s also Josh Smith and Al Horford. Yeah, Marvin IS the 5th option on this starting lineup. Ever ask yourself why?
I think the answer is popping up every day now. How many games has Marvin stepped up in, where other guys were struggling? He had an opportunity last night, when JJ was struggling. Who stepped up? Bibby. Crawford. Smith. Horford.
If Marvin is good for 20+ on other teams, he should be good for more than just half that on THIS team. Right?

Don’t be surprised. Inaccuracy is an epidemic around here, lol. Yeah, Joe struggled badly last night. It wasn’t that he was being a ball-hog, it was that he forced some things when he really didn’t have to. Fortunately, he didn’t keep playing like that.
Josh Smith is finally getting it, and while it hasn’t made him a 20ppg scorer, games like last night proved just how valuable he is to this team. Here’s the thing: the kid isn’t dumb. Just impatient, and lacking much of the basketball tutoring that so many others have gotten.
You can’t teach what he has: physical skills that are just nuts. But what he has is in such abundance, I don’t think anybody bothered teaching him the fundamentals. So he comes to the NBA, straight from high school, playing like a high schooler. Who was there to mentor him? Al Harrington? Yeah, for a minute, but that guy is anything but a mentor. And Woody is NOT a teacher. He doesn’t have the patience, figuring anybody that comes into the pros IS a pro.
Josh isn’t dumb. Merely impatient. Nobody taught him to pass. He knew how, he just had to figure out WHEN, and how to make GOOD passes, not FLASHY passes. His assist average is not a mistake or fluke. I watched him throw 3 or 4 very good passes inside to Horford and Marvin last night. Passes that got dropped.
He has finally listened to somebody, and is now seeing the dividends it pays to play within his game. He takes far fewer jumpers, but he still needs to have a jumper. Only the absolutely most dominant big men don’t need a jumper (Shaq). The key is to know when to shoot it, and to hit it when needed. Josh is learning that.
Look how he’s playing NOW, and realize that he still doesn’t turn 24 for another week or so…
This kid had to learn to play the game at the highest level, coming straight out of high school, with no fundamentals, and no real mentors (unless you think Rasheed being here for one day or Lorenzen Wright and his popcorn jokes were enough to do the trick).
This is why DJ White and Gerald Green aren’t getting anywhere…

EJH,
Marvin would never average 20 points on any NBA team. If he could score like that he would draw the other teams best defender, or maybe a double team, and he surely could not score then. He can’t score now with the worst defenders in the league guarding him. He is one of the worst small forwards in the league. I’m not sure if he was not on the Hawks if he would still be in the league.

When woody is coaching and the team is doing bad like against the magic, its like he become confuse out there and wait on some miracle from his starters, he have 2 realize that when the starters is not performing that you can turn 2 your bench for the energy that the team so desperately need in order 2 get back in the game, he have 2 develop a feel for the game as a coach.

Marvin shouldn’t even be in the NBA. That’s why he got picked second in the draft. Yeah makes sense doesn’t it. I’m dumber than j-smoove’s toe nails. But at least I got this lap top that I stole from some college kid. The little idiot hasn’t figured out to turn the internet service off yet. Now what was I saying. Oh yeah, Marvin shouldn’t be in the league, it’s a tragedy. Players who average double digit scoring in the nba are worthless. Nobody in the league is that bad. Nobody I tell you. Now when is Obama going to give me my bailout. I want my own lap top computer and fresh paint on this bench. And acknowledgement as a basketball player. I can’t believe I didn’t make the local college basketball team as a walk on all those years ago. All because I look like george clinton on crack with a bad case of scoliosis.

Okay, let me clarify the statements that I made before about Marvin Williams. Mo could be an outstanding scorer in the league. We’ve all seen signs of where he can be absolutely devastating, but he lacks the scorer’s menatlity. Now that takes nothing away from his defense and his unselfishness, and as some of you have pointed out, his numbers are still comparable to some of the better players in the league. He’s also money at the free throw line. You can’t just throw all that out. What you want from Marvin Williams is the same thing that you want from the Hawks at-large, consistancy! There’s no question in my mind that Marvin can make shots. The only question I have about him is his willingness to continue to look for opportunities to take them, but I do believe that he’s a bonified NBA player.
Rod, your point is well taken. Now give that boy back his laptop.

N.J. is 0-16 and is going nowhere. They have a 7 foot center who has skills, size and weight. Hes polished and can compete with Howard or Oneal. Hes currently averaging 17.9points and 9 rebounds per game. GO GET THIS GUY LOPEZ!! WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY PAYING SUND FOR? UNIVERSITY of RICHMOND still needs good recruits from the ATLANTA area for both basketball and football. We lose DAVID GONZOLVEZ (SG) and ERIC WARD (Q-back) this year, and KEVIN ANDERSON (PG) will be a rising senior after this season. Great day for SPIDER fans. RICHMOND squeaks by ELON 16-13 in the FCS play-offs while the men’s basketball team just won the South Parde Invitational taking the measure of MISSISSIPPI STATE 63-62 yesterday and MISSOURI 59-52 tonight. Plus the women’s round-ballers cleaned CLEMSON’s clock yesterday. Great sports weekend for RICHMOND.

Actually, the guy who writes “Crashing the Glass” is pretty good. I’d recommend reading his articles.
By the way, if all you have to say is insults towards somebody else’s post, then you’re personifying the very thing you’re accusing somebody else of. It doesn’t get much more retarded than that. Know what’s worse than somebody who is being called a loser? The person who runs behind them calling them a loser…repeatedly. Give it up. Obviously YOU are the one who “doesn’t have a life.”
Posting with names like “a better question” and “Hey loser” is cowardly (even on a computer, how sad are YOU?) to say the least. But hey, I guess everybody has to have a vice.

Ant Banks ,
I agree that Woody shouldn’t make too many radical changes. However, the theme from last year was that we shouldn’t change anything, including the minutes some of our starters are playing. As I recall, Joe Johnson had a less than spectacular playoff performance, we limped through the first round (which we barely won, against a team that we should have beaten 4 games to 2), then we didn’t show up in Cleveland. Everybody was hurt and/or worn out. Josh Smith was our leading scorer, and he wasn’t even playing all that great.
If that happens again, we run the chance of facing a tougher first round opponent, one that could knock us out in 7 games. Even the best teams rest their starters, especially down the stretch. San Antonio does it with Duncan. Shaq’s been doing it for years. L.A. will rest Gasol and Kobe. I’ll tell you why Boston’s fans aren’t screeching about minutes: because none of their starters are playing more 35 mpg…

Bobcats beat up on the Wizards last night. Talk about a tale of two teams going in opposite directions.
During the preseason, all the talk was about how we would have to battle Agent Zero and his crew for the 4th seed this season. As if they had already won that spot, and we had to hope we could play well enough to challenge them.
Meanwhile, Larry Brown was drawing criticism and the Bobcats were struggling to score, and slotted as Eastern Conference doormats. Well, I respect that team and that coach. Now, they are playing better than ever, and they have dual threats in Gerald Wallace and Stephen Jackson. They haven’t gotten back to .500 or better ball yet, but they will.
All this time, the Hawks have won, and won, and won. Even the most reluctant of experts has to acknowledge what they’re able to do now. All this team has to do is keep winning.

I don’t think anyone is downing Joe. He’s my favorite player, and I have great respect for him as both a player and a person. HOWEVER, and I want to be absolutely clear, he has got to make good decisions on offense. If you dribble the ball for 20 seconds looking for your shot and then pass it, no, you haven’t taken a shot, BUT you still haven’t had a good offensive possession, and that’s what Joe does sometimes, actually more than any other player on the Hawks roster. Now, here’s the thing, he’s been VERY outspoken after losses this season, more so than any other year he’s been with the team. Maybe that’s because his expectations for this season are so much higher, maybe it’s because he’s going to be a FA at the end of the year, I don’t know. One things for sure, if you’re going to talk as much as he’s talking, you need to back it up with smart play, and he needs to work on that.

A scary thought: the Hawks facing an Allen Iverson led Sixers squad in the first round of the playoffs.
The Sixers would have more (and better athletes), a center who seems to live to play the Hawks and a guard that no one on the Hawks team can guard.
The reality is that Friday’s victory was more about the Sixers’ unforced turnovers than the Hawks dominating play. Iverson could, and I stress could here, be ..ok wait for it… the answer to that problem.

There is a story in today’s New York Times that discusses the Hawks. It can be found at http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/29/sports/basketball/29beck.html?_r=1&ref=sports
The story says that the Hawks were considered a second tier team in the season preview magazines. They stated that by last week the Hawks had made most pundits change their view that the East’s Big Three was now the Big Four based on Hawks wins over Boston, the Nuggets and the Trailblazers. But after their loss to the Magic discussion of a Big Four might be premature.
