Sorry to jump on so late today. I have to get cranking on a couple different things – a story about the Hawks’ second team for tomorrow and then a notes column for Sunday – so not much time today.

The fact that hey don’t have Yao (Ming), they have become this solid team that, defensively, they get after you and offensively, they get up and down the floor making shots. They can score the ball too. We’ve just got to be in ready to defend for 48 minutes because they can score. They’re averaging, I think, over 100 points a game, too. (Ed: 103.7) Somewhere along the line, somebody’s going to have to defend to win this game. I like the makeup of their team because you don’t know who’s going to get you. They’ve got a few pieces that they all can make offensive plays.”

Answer: Props to you if you knew it was Trevor Ariza, a free-agent signee from the Lakers last offseason. After mostly coming off the bench with 8.9 points per game last season, Ariza is averaging 18.4 per game for the Rockets, who are the fourth team he has played for in his six NBA seasons.
(Apologies if that difficulty of that question was WAY beneath you. I’m still learning the waters here. Maybe the question should what teams has he played for.) (Wikipedia fact: Ariza’s high school team had five future NBA players on it – Hassan Adams, Brandon Heath, Bobby Brown, Gabriet Pruitt and Ariza. That’s crazy. You could have been a Division I player on that team and would have had to come off the bench.)

Lets keep it up. I am interested to see where we stand after 20 games. According to the Hawks schedule, we will have played ORL by then, and game 20 is vs. DAL. We don’t play CLE until games 30 and 31 (back-to-back, city-swap game) so that will give us most of the games vs. top-performing teams by game 31, outside of PHX.

no one blogs much since Sekou left. Wonder how long the Hawks can sustain this. I am more interested to see how they react when they start to slump. Its all smiles now (which I like by the way), but when they run into some adversity I think that will really show what kind of team this is.

Horford’s on TNT. Hawks starting to get MAJOR press. Also Charles say he’s disgusted with the Atlanta fanbase. Support the team people. I also heard the ESPN announcers say the same thing yesterday.

For those of you drooling over TMac, don’t. I live in Houston now and can testify firsthand that he is not a difference maker. His stats are like Andruw Jones’ – king of the meaningless 30-point night. Doesn’t want the ball in the cruch and can’t put the team on his back when it needs a spark.
Did I mention he’s hurt all the time? Like he was most of last season, and is right now? Look elsewhere.

I saw Horford on TNT also. I too am embarassed by all of the National Media dogging the Hawks fans for not showing up. We really need to get behind these guys. I remember all those days in the barber shop, the NBA was always big conversation. Though whenever the conversation switched to B-Ball I always got quiet. Once, someone noticed that and asked if I did not like b-ball or something. When I said yes I do, he asked me “who’s your team”. When I said “I’m a Hawks fan”, he just turned away, and they got back to talking basketball like I was not in the building. I sure do wish that shop was still around because I would love to join them in conversation now.

Before everyone crowns us champions because we beat a couple of good teams, maybe we should beat some other teams that are contenders like…Lakers (who destroyed us), Cavaliers, Spurs and some more quality teams.
I’m all for the Hawks and we have all waited a long time, but shessh let them get 20-25 games in the season and lets see where we are…

For any wondering about JaVALE McGEE, he’s signed through next season with a team option in 2011-12 and a qualifying option for 2012-13. ERNIE GRUNFELD thinks he got the steal of this decade, and I tend to agree. He’s still might raw though. Misses a lot of defensive assignments. Improved from last year, but getting less burn.

RICHBRAVE-congradulations to your grandson, I know you’re feeling really proud about now.
TOO HYPED-the Lakers defeated us 118-110. That’s hardly getting destroyed. Even though they had a 25+ pt lead on us at one time, we made such a furious 2nd half comeback, and cut the lead to 6pts, they had to bring their starters in to finish the gm.
There are 2 things that should have every Hawks fan excited about this team and what it can and will accomplish this yr.
(1)We’re ranked 4th in the NBA in scoring at 107.0PPG.
(2)Our DEF has gotten so much better over the last 4gms, we’ve held each opponent under 100PPG and reduced our PPG allowed from 103PPG to 98.8PPG. A strong OFF and a strong DEF that’s getting better, along with strong rebounding, especially OFF rebounding, will allow the Hawks to compete with the Cavaliers, Spurs, Magic etc.

Do NOT underestimate Houston. They may not have a star on their team right now, but they play hard and smart every night and they are not going to go away. This is a game the Hawks cannot win solely with athleticism.

Im impressed with the job Woody is doing with this team. Not to be a homer but I believe in loyatly and it’s good to see the loyalty our ownership have shown in him pay off especially when it wouldve been justified firing him in the past years. Right now Im just going to enjoy the ride this team takes me on this year and hope it ends with our last playoff game being a victory.

hawks_4_life, I feel you. A lot of the haters in the Bubba posse are trying to justify the venom they spewed over the past few years. Denial is a B!tch.
The reality is most of the narrow minded hate factory workers in the southern chapter of the grand knights of hate, lacked the foresight, understanding, and patience to wait on the Hawks to grow and develop under Woodson.
Woodson took this team as a rebuilding project and began with the youngest team in basketball, which should have keynoted most basketball wise people that we are looking at 4-5 years to respectability.
Instead of showing patience in waiting for these boys to mature and learn not just Woodson style of play but how to compete in the NBA, as well as how to be a responsible man, the Bubba’s went on a ” Kill Woody” campaign that is only now beginning to subside as we are seeing the fruits of Woodson’s labor.
Jump right on this Woodson bandwagon; leave the hate baggage behind, destination championship basketball.
Woodson has done a remarkable job. We should have known there was something special here when we took Boston 7deep with at that time the 3rd youngest team in the NBA. The job Woodson is doing now is no different than the job he was doing then. The only difference is now he has more tools and talent to work with and the boys have grown and now understand Woodson’s program.
Clearly all this anti Woodson hate was predicated on a lack of knowledge. I have single out Ken Strickland and stayed in his face about it because he was the leading crew chief and stroked the flames of hate with vigor. It must be noted that although he was the ring leader he had lots of help from other ignoramuses.
The bottom line is Woodson and his Hawks, are special and in for a great year. I hope they stay healthy and go deep in the play offs. Yes, how can Woodson not get serious consideration for COACH OF THE YEAR?
What a slam dunk that would be on the Bubba crew!

I really can’t stand the way Charles and Kenny dog Atlanta. I like both of them as individuals, but it seems that they have a bone to pick with the city that they are in. Last year, it was the Hawks are over hyped. Now, it’s the city is not supporting the team. I have been to half the home games this season, and yes, the Portland game was a small crowd, but those of us there made quite a lot of noise. Also, the city gets behind the team on big games and the playoffs. Seems like sour grapes to me.

We are currently ranked in the middle of the pack in attendance figures, and we have not had as many weekend and conference rival home games, yet. I bet after the Thanksgiving weekend will be in the upper third in the league in attendance. No, we are not going to out draw LA, Chicago, NY of course. Then you have Utah and San Antonio who have nothing else to do. But, we should be above Washington, etc. Currently we are equal with Orlando (who were just in the conference finals, and don’t have pro or college football to compete with) Why is no one yelping about them?

I agree that Woodson gets too bad of a rap by too many people. This is a guy that has been coaching under an embarrassment of an ownership group for years now. That being said, any true Hawks fan that has been watching this team knows that Woodson is an average coach at best. So many games I’ve found myself yelling at the TV for some bone-headed substitution, or lack thereof. But now that he has a deeper bench, he is doing a much better job, and he deserves all of the credit for this fast start.
I don’t think Bubba even watches NBA.

We had nice wins against Boston, Miami, Blazers, and Denver but have yet to play, teams like PHX, Houston, Spurs, Dallas, Clev and win on the road. Woody “coach of the year?” It’s a nice thought but the season is way to young to presume anything.
So far we have avoided the injury bug. Look at what Adelman is doing in Houston. His two biggest stars out and are still 7-4. Could we be without JJ and Josh and be 7-4? I do think Woody is coaching and growing in skill. Much like the young team he is coaching. Long live the streak. 6 in a row.
side note – Me being one of the Josh fans who think he and Al need the rock more.

KevinA , yes, it is a hopeful statement and yes, it early with a long season ahead.
I think Josh and Al get the rock enough. I like the balance this team has and the way the motion of the offense feeds off JJ and Crawford. We seemed well oiled to me. Like you, Im a Josh fanatic, but I think he works best with the offense coming to him rather than being the initiator.

Josh’s game has skyrocketed for two simple reasons, fewer jump shots and a commitment to rebounding. Woody has been telling him this for 5 years.
He and Al are playing at All Star levels. And, as of right now, I think Josh should start in the East. He won’t because of fan voting, but he definitely deserves to be in the game.
I agree we need watch out for Houston. They are dangerous. But, I think we match up well.

As of today the HAWKS have the best record in the NBA!! The season has just begun, but its good to know we’re among the best.
Tonight’s game is one game that CLYDE should avoid, the only 7 footers will be in street cloths! Houston is tough as nails and will score a lot of points if you don’t get back on defense. The key is rebounding the ball! I watched Scola take it to Horford in FIBA summer league play so don’t think for second this is going to be domination inside. Smoove will have to bring his ‘A’ game and really box out his man. I think if Smoove and Horford box out and really hit the offensive boards we should be able to pull this one out. Bibby is going to have really problems with Brooks and JJ will have to work hard to slow down Ariza. (because of Ariza’s size) Like most teams in the league, Houston has no one on the bench to guard Crawford, this is his night to get hot again. Crawford, will have no really shot blockers to think about in the paint so he should be able to get to the basket at will. Again the HAWKS better bring their lunch pale tonight or their going to get their butts handed to them!!

Houston is young and will play with great effort. They also get off to fast starts, something our Hawks are not known for. They also avg 103 pt’s a game even though they are still finding their way. Josh and Al should be able to handle their front court. I hope we go low early and often and pressure the paint on offense.
Ariza is playing great, Marvin will have his hands full. Brooks had 33 pt’s on 11-23 shooting against the Lakers in a win. It will be interesting how Woody defends against a very good quick pg. Landury went 13-18 with 27 pt’s against PHX. Fun match up for Josh.
We should win this game being at home and all but this is still a dangerous team. NO beats a hot PHX last night. In this league we cannot look past anybody.

That’s probably why you think Woody is a better coach than I do. I believe JJ, Bibby and Jamal or off to great starts because we are going low more. I believe they have even more upside if we go low even more.
Where would these shots come from? How about cutting down on 3pt shots by Jamal. His 3pt percentage is .255. You know what his FG% would be if he like Josh gave up on the 3? .547 Crawford needs to do what he does best – a facilatator/.initiator/driver.

KevinA I dont know how your comment concerning my opinion of Woody is connected to my being a Josh fan. Please forgive me, but I dont see the connection.
I Bibby has always been an excellent shooter and a three points marksman. Crawford, jj and bibby draw defenders and that opens up the baseline and the post for Al and Josh.
Al and Josh feed off JJ,Crawford and Bibby rather than the other way around.
I agree with you that Crawford should restrict his game to what he does best, as good as he is lets let JJ and Bibby bust the 3’s for us.

I dont think Woodson is playing-LOL- but you and I know that switching is the play of the day. I dont think we will shut them down but attempt to contain them.

Zaza is the surprise so far to me. He is creating his own shots and finishing strong in the paint. He has certainly stepped his game up. I cant give Woodson credit for Zaza’s improvement. That belongs to Zaza and his determination to be a better player.

truth, zaza likes it here and is committed to the long view. i think he is going to be a solid citizen beyond bball in the big a. those virtues you speak of are carrying him far and good you gave notice and recognition to him, not many do. he didnt let woody shake his confidence too far and really worked to make a place and name for himself here. i was sure glad to see him grow up and get in KG’s face in person during the playoffs two years ago. better than live atlanta wrestling on saturday nights on the tube.

Ariza is averaging 18.4 ppg on 39% shooting. I would not call that great.
He is very active with a 4.1 apg and 2.2 spg average, but with 2.8 TO per game as well.
His “visibility” is mostly due to the fact that Houston does not have anyone else to revert to for offense more than he actually having a great season so far.
With the above I don’t mean that we should not be looking closely at him, however, I am confident that Marvin can keep him perfectly under control.
Personally I am more worried with Scola and Brooks, who match up well against us.
Scola is very resourceful and Brooks is too fast for Bibby.

I think Bibby will be alright against Brooks. If Houston is counting on Brooks to shoulder the load tonight, then they’re going to lose.
Scola and Battier (even though I hated him when he was at Duke) are two of my favorite players in the league. Tough guys that play hard all the time.
Also, surprised Ariza has played so well. He is really good. Thought that he was more of a product of having stars around him in LA. Guess he can play..
Show up tonight Hawks fans! Tickets are not that expensive!

doc Two years ago, my impression of Zaza wasnt what it is today. 2 years ago, even last year, he was a turnover waiting to happen and he couldnt finish in the post either.
I dont know why you want to blame his turnovers on woodson, but its funny. Kind of remind me of an violent abusive person who says “look what you made me do”.It is note worthy that signing Zaza was a “must” for Woodson which contradicts your statement. Woodson had confidence in Zaza when I did not. The real question is did zaza have confidence in himself.
I guess by the way he worked on his game and learned to create and finish he believed in himself and was able to acknowledge his own short comings, which is the first step to getting better.

I agree with almost everything you said. How anyone can get down on Zaza is beyond me. The guy plays and accepts his role perfectly. Not many teams have such a scrappy big man coming off the bench.
Anyways….only thing you said that I do not agree with is that Zaza was a turnover waiting to happen last year. No he wasn’t. He had another solid year last year. I think, since the fight with KG, Zaza has played well. That altercation with KG (I call him d-bag) was a turning point for Zaza. That season he had played lousy. The first three games of the Boston series he was lousy. Things turned after the fight.

I was not attempting that connection. I agree with you there is none.
The Al and Josh feed off JJ,Crawford and Bibby rather than the other way around.
This is our huckleberry, I think inside out play collapses the defense and opens the floor for the shooters. You think the opposite. I want the big’s to get the rock even more. You think the balance is fine.
I have no problem with your opinion. I won’t take mine seriously until somebody pays me for them.

Dan, OK we have different opinions on Zaza’s past. Id rather focus on what we agree with and that’s Super”z” is playing lights out in the paint right now and hes hitting that 12-14 footer with confidence. I doing agree that the face off (punk intended here) with KG was a turning point for the fight with in himself to push his self to a higher level. Just because you make up your mind to raise your game doesn’t mean you will have instant results. We are both glad hes a part of the mix!!@! I hope he keeps playing lights out in the paint.
I don’t think Woodson has changed as much as the fact that you find it hard to argue with Woodson’s results. Bottom line is winning. Josh has changed in that he refined his game and is growing up as a person. Other than that its the same Josh, confident, loyal and assertive. Great guy to have on any team.
Its it possible that your perception of the Hawks have changed now that you are beginning to get a clearer picture of Woody vision of this team?

Hawks fan: I have no problem wearing red to the game on Thanksgiving. I think it is a great idea for the image of the city.
But, I don’t really care for the alternate jersey. I like the color, its just the big ATL seems a little dated to me. A little trying to hard to be cool.
I don’t think the team will need any extra energy to play Orlando on Thanksgiving, and I don’t think that we are “shocking the world” anymore. With everyone ranking the Hawks as the best team in basketball.
It would look good on TV though

GRANDAD-when you talk out of both sides of your mouth(s), you will tend to contradict yourself(s) with regularity.
I’m a fan of what Woodson is currently doing, and has this team doing, as much as anyone. BUT ANYONE THAT SAYS, THINKS OR IMAGINES WOODSON HAS BEEN DOING THIS TYPE, LEVEL AND DEGREE OF COACHING BEFORE THE START OF THIS YR IS BLIND, CRIPPLE AND CRAZY. Before the start of this season, Woodson definitely did not:
(1)attempt to develop or utilize his bench.
(2)show concern for the wear and tear on his starters.
(3)make in gm adjustments, changes or strategies.
(4)have his team consistently play an uptempo, fastbreak, attack the basket style of ball.
(5)make an effort, or even pretend to gave a dam about developing a young player, particularly if he was a guard.

ummmm,hold on!! yes they are playing well,but they are doing so in spite of the coaching,which there is NONE!!
WOODY IS PLAYING TEAGUE EVERY 2 GAMES..instead of giving him minutes every game..and,i thought we kept morris and brought in collins to play minutes and up front with a big front line..
don’t u remember horford and smith saying how happy were that we brought in big men during pre-season,and how that will keep them fresh,not only in da pre-season but during the season??
we’re,12 games in,and i told u all after the 3rd game that teagues minutes will decrease,and soon he will be coming into every 3-4 games..
and,where is the developement of othello hunter..he is this years speedy claxton with all of the nice suits..
look for more minutes from the starters by game 15-19,and for joe,bibbs,josh,and marvin to play their usual 39plus minutes a game,with only a 7-8 man rotation..
joes legs aren’t as tired..he has the burden of being the scorer lifted as we welcome in crawford,and the comp between these guys is bringing him out of his shell and he is talking more..
but,look for this team to fall in the playoffs if we don’t begin to go 10-12 deep all season..the 2nd unit would be a nice change of pace with teague,joe smith,crawford,mo evans,zsa zsa, and every other nite,randmo,collins and othello in da mix..keeping fresh legs in..players will be ready to come in at a moments notice..it can be done..
the biggest test is gonna be,when the hawks have another road stand of 4-6 games,and they play down a notch from their competition and then woody goes back to playing 6-7 players..he then panics and leaves his starters in too freaking long..
until i see the 10-12 man rotation,then we’ll only be as good as 4th-7th.. this trip at number 1 will only be for a minute,till we see them on da road again and play on a lower level..

truth, too funny my man. yes, i guess it was a back handed slap at your main man woody, though it wasnt meant to be. i have been fairly objective with woody to the point of saying that he should be given more cred than he has been given this year and in others. that has also been my tune with josh smith as well over the past few years but i usually sided with josh than woody in some of their outbursts, my bad.
if you have time, which it seems you do, you can go back even to some of the worst years when i was blogging and you were maybe back in la still, and know i defended him for keeping the guys playing hard and growing up. however, i do look at some coaches as being confidence builders and some not. not saying which is better as it depends on what you are trying to achieve. i dont think i will get too many folks to say woody is the former over the latter but you. but whatever not meant to slander your boy woody though it seems you are bit sensitive today or everyday about him. kinda funny for a tough guy from la to be so sensitive about anything but whatever. sorry to offend you in my choice of terms and examples. again too funny man, thought i was concurring with you. you are probably too tough to want that anyway.

DOC-remember, you’re addressing TRUTH SERUM, so there’s no need to apologize for your choice of words. He’s an entirely different personality, or alter ego, than the vulgar, hardnosed excuse maker we were addressing earlier. However, they are all extremely sensitive, especially when it comes to Woodson.

Great to see Horford on TNT last night. First time a Hawk player has been invited in ten years. The world is finally giving our ball club some respect! AL looked good up there. Hope to see Josh up there sometime.
Hawks must win tonight to maintain a perfect home record and remain the best team in the entire NBA/World. Houston is a scrappy bunch that plays hard, but I don’t think these new look Hawks are gonna take them lightly. Not sure how long Hawks dominance can last, but I’m riding it as long as it does!

Big Ump, you picked up on that.We all wish woody would play our favorite players, but hey, it his team! Unless they are losing more games each year rather than winning more I say hes doing well. When ever I see us play I always think we are well coached win or lose.

Naw, you did not offend me. I have no problem with a different view from mine. As a matter of fact you are nearly correct on this issue. I just started with Sekou’s blog this year. Most of the people Ive come to know for the first time and many are decent people. Others are more followers than leaders and have no ability to think for themselves, so they closely follow others. As long as they are happy then cool.
I knew Kens whining or posting, which ever you prefer from Schultz and Bradley’s blogs so I had seen his regurgitation s and knew where he was coming from. As for every one else on this page, Ive learned where they stand by reading them.
