Question: Who is Houston’s leading scorer? (Answer below)
What’s up, folks?
Sorry to jump on so late today. I have to get cranking on a couple different things – a story about the Hawks’ second team for tomorrow and then a notes column for Sunday – so not much time today.
Hope you all are doing well.
A couple links:
Sekou’s blog off of last night’s game.
Ken Berger’s column for CBS Sportsline. (I met Ken after the game last night at Manuel’s with AP writer Paul Newberry and former AJC staffer and now nba.com freelancer Matt Winkeljohn. Ken bought my Sprite, so kudos to Ken.)
Matt’s story for nba.com.
A little shout-out to the Hawks in Ball Don’t Lie.
A Fox Sports column by Charley Rosen.
The view from South Florida and the Sun-Sentinel.
Lastly, you can check out Al Horford on TNT tonight at 8 p.m. for the pregame with Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley and Ernie Johnson.
Looking ahead
Mike Woodson’s take on the Rockets:
The fact that hey don’t have Yao (Ming), they have become this solid team that, defensively, they get after you and offensively, they get up and down the floor making shots. They can score the ball too. We’ve just got to be in ready to defend for 48 minutes because they can score. They’re averaging, I think, over 100 points a game, too. (Ed: 103.7) Somewhere along the line, somebody’s going to have to defend to win this game. I like the makeup of their team because you don’t know who’s going to get you. They’ve got a few pieces that they all can make offensive plays.”
Sorry I don’t have time for much more. I’ll have more tomorrow.
Ken
Answer: Props to you if you knew it was Trevor Ariza, a free-agent signee from the Lakers last offseason. After mostly coming off the bench with 8.9 points per game last season, Ariza is averaging 18.4 per game for the Rockets, who are the fourth team he has played for in his six NBA seasons.
(Apologies if that difficulty of that question was WAY beneath you. I’m still learning the waters here. Maybe the question should what teams has he played for.) (Wikipedia fact: Ariza’s high school team had five future NBA players on it – Hassan Adams, Brandon Heath, Bobby Brown, Gabriet Pruitt and Ariza. That’s crazy. You could have been a Division I player on that team and would have had to come off the bench.)

Great win. Big games from Marvin, Crawford, and Horford. Josh struggled tonight but that putback was the most important shot of the night. I don’t like how we rebounded. We gave up way too many offensive rebounds. Houston is a good team. They are missing their two big guns but they play so hard that you have to appreciate what they do out there on the court. Chalk up the win and get ready for the next opponent.

Its funny but my last few girl friends b4 I got married were from New Orleans – they have some fine ones – its just that most of the eye candy moved on to greener pastures like Atlanta, lol.

When I’m wrong, I’ll stand up like a man and admit it, period. Only an immature punk of a so called man would post under a different name in an attempt to hide the shame of being wrong. When Woodson wasn’t doing what I felt he was capable of doing, I gave him hell. But when he stepped up to the plate, I gave him his due. Anyone that would criticize and disparage Marvin unmercifully for not playing up to his potential, then refuse to offer an acknowledgement when he does is a hypocrite and a disgraceful gutless idiot.

WHY DID WE NEED JOE IN THE GAME FOR SO LONG WHEN YOU HAVE CRAWFORD AND A HOT MARVIN PICKING UP THE OFFENSIVE SLACK??
AND,WHAT ARE WE GONNA SAY IF WE LOSE TO A CHRIS PAUL LESS HORNETS TEAM?
WE’RE BETTER THAN THEM AND THIS IS A ROAD GAME..AND,WHY AREN’T OUR BIGS IN MORE..MORE THAN JUST 3 MINUTES A GAME IF ANY..AND DEF MORE THAN “DNP”..

I would like to get excited about marvin after the game he had last night. However, I know that he will just go back to sleepwalking thru the next ten or so games before we see this type of play again. Seriously, why don’t we see this type of play from him more often? Does he suffer from a.d.d? The way he had played prior to last night suggest that he is not even worth the contract they gave him this offseason.

I’ve got no problem with JJ’s minutes in a game we only won with 7/1ths of a second left on the clock. We won the game. After tonight’s game we will not play again until next Thursday. Did you check out how many minutes JJ played in Wednesday night’s game. Some people cannot be satisfied with enjoying one of the hottest streaks in the team’s history.
When Marvin is the low scorer among the starting five and you have the second best scoring average for sixth men in the league it just seems wrong to be complaining about Marvin on a night when he scores 29 points.

I’ve seen Indiana use a last second strategy so many times with Reggie Miller. 2 seconds on the clock, Indiana’s ball 3 defenders rush Miller the other two cover the second option, Miller fires, soft touch, ball coming off the front of the rim, put back by Davis, time expires, Pacers win, who’s got next?

I agree, so many miss the thrill of accomplishment because they never accept responsibility. I guess it’s a learned trait. I think non athletes miss the mental toughness necessary to compete. For arm chair athletes, they only see the physical specimen and never connect with the mental assertiveness that comes with imposing your will on another athlete or team. It’s a hardness that can get dirty if you need to go there. I like that about this team. Their mental hardness is there and developing. JJ called it out a week ago, that’s a definite edge and tool the Hawks are using. They gained a great deal from the Laker lost. They connected with the toughness that the world championship teams have. That’s why Ron Artest is such a good fit for the Lakers. Magic’s teams had it and so did Bird’s teams. As a matter of fact, I don’t know any “soft” champions in the NBA.
My point is that you can’t get to that level of mental strength if you live in denial or blame others for what is really your responsibility. Man up!
Samuel, there’s a saying in baseball when a player strikes out or makes a bad out swing offensively he goes to the batter in the on deck circle and says “pick me up”.
You pick this site up Samuel, Good posts as always.

RLP Excellent point. Lets just enjoy the season, Let the pros do what they are paid to do. Let be thankful our players are healthy, winning , and getter better and better, What more can you really ask for? There will be times when JJ play big minutes and times when he can rest. Hes the man and captain of the team, In a close game, we want our best on the floor. Dont count minutes in this game, count the win. Count minutes at the end of the season.
Good point.

The first points of the game were scored by Josh Smith, on a dunk. The last points of the game were scored by Josh Smith, on a dunk.
I give Marvin props for his game last night. Unfortunately, thats what makes it so frustrating. You know the potential is there for these kind of games from Marvin, but for some reason, you only see it once every 10-15 games.
If he can give us these kind of games more consistently, the Hawks will be hard to beat. Because if you have JJ, Crawford, Bibby and Marvin knocking down shots, the other team is in trouble.
Keep it going Marvin. Go Hawks.

ROAN ST-I’m surprised at your stance on Marvin. Instead of giving him recognition for having an outstanding gm, or acknowledging that he might finally be out of his OFF slump, you come up with some weakminded excuse about what you think you know he’ll do in the future. Woodson decided to go conservative and freeze the ball down the stretch and put the ball in JJ’s hands, who shot 33% and had 3 critical TO’s while pounding the ball trying to beat double teams. Now, this isn’t new for JJ, yet no one holds back their acknowledgement of JJ’s performances because they know there’s a strong likelihood of him doing it again.
How many teams #5 starter averages 10.5PPG and 4.8RPG while in a slump, and has the ability to carry his team on his shoulders and put up 29pts on 13-19 shooting(3-5 3pt), 9rebs(5 OFF) when the team needs it most? Without Marvins performance last night, this gm would have likely ended up being a repeat of the Charlotte gm.
Don’t put yourself in the same category with BLIND HATERS like ROD FROM CP. When you criticize a player because you feel he’s not performing up his expected potential, yet refuse to acknowledge him when he does, it shows your issues aren’t with the players performance, or lack thereof, but with the player, which is personal. PLEASE, WHATEVER YOU DO ROAN, DON’T PUT YOURSELF IN THE SAME CATEGORY WITH ROD. This is a guy that wants HIS WOODY EXTENDED. Does that mean if he can’t see Woodson’s bald head roaming the sidelines after this season he’ll suffer some sort of ERECTILE DISFUNCTION?

This just shows the depth of this team where JJ and Josh Smith can have off nights but a M. Williams and J. Crawford can up their games and we can win. Horford is our constant where he gives us 10 points and 10 Rebounds with 2 blocks and total hustle every game no matter what. This team is an East contender and I can see a scenerio where we can win it. Boston is old and Sheed can melt down. Shaq is old and can break down anytime, even though they won V. Carter gets hurt and tends to no-show big Games. Ask the 2001 raptors game 7 against the 76’s about that. So the “Big made changes that could interfere with their chemistry, where the Hawks kept the team together and adding a bench player in Crawford.

Hawks are for real, folks. Believe that. They just find ways to win, despite the refs doing their best to cost us the game. I think yesterday’s game was the toughest win so far this season. Houston gave Hawks all they could handle, but Hawks still got the win thanks to Josh, Marvin and Jamal. That is the mark of a good, deep and talented team with the will not to lose. I am loving it!

” So why are some asking for a center?”
Because there is this thing called the playoffs where the premium is on interior defense and half court offense and those teams that perform better in those areas consistently, win. Last night’s game was an illustration, when push came to shove, the Rockets beat the Hawks to death. and the reason(a reason) that the Hawk’s front line was in foul trouble was the switching defense often placed them in mis-matches that resulted in them having to foul players at the rim.
There is a school of thought that if the Hawks had a center who could bang with the big boys, block shots and run the floor the team would be better.Al could do some damage at both the 4 and 5 and Josh could do some damage at the 4 and 3. Just some strategic albeit wistful thinking on some folk’s part.

Another HUGH WIN! I missed everything but the highlights. Houston was as tough as advertised, but it looks like the guys just didn’t give up. Marvin did his thing and Crawford got his man also. HAWKS got beat up on the boards, but looking at the numbers they held their own overall.
Hornets:
Tonight the HAWKS are going to have to bring their lunch pals again! The Hornets are going to get physical and their guards are going to attack the paint. Collison or Brown will cause problems for Bibby again. Marvin’s going to have to stay with Stojakovic because he’s got his stroke back. West has always been an odd match-up for Josh Smith, so he’s going to have to work hard. The Hornets bench actually matches up pretty well with our bench accept for Zaza. Crawford can still go off at any time, but I would like to see Zaza come in and dominate the paint. Smith needs come in also and go to work. I think if those guys can take over down low, we have a good chance to pull this game out. If we don’t rebound and score in the paint, this could be a long night that ends with a loss!
GO HAWKS!!!!
