Whaddya know?

Greetings, all-

Hope you are well. As things sometimes go in my life, I was just about to post a new blog but I was messing around with it and it all disappeared. That’s how I roll. So this will probably be not quite as in-depth. Trust me, it was awesome. (I am being cynical.)

Anyway, I’ll give you some links and invite you to join in a contest.

Links

1) Sekou has started at nba.com and has his blog up.

2) nba.com’s new power rankings are up. The Hawks are in the top slot. For some of you guys who’ve been around, that must qualify as mind-boggling.

3) nba.com’s David Aldridge caught up with Billy Knight. Knight looks back on the Marvin Williams over Chris Paul draft – “Sure, if you had taken one of those guys, there could have been a whole domino effect of things that happened. But that’s not what happened.” – and gives his take on the Joe Johnson trade.

4) Interesting story in the Oregonian about Brandon Roy and Joe Johnson. (One matchup to watch, obviously. Another is Greg Oden-Al Horford. Somewhat interestingly, the last time the two faced off in Atlanta was in the 2007 NCAA championship at the Georgia Dome, a game I happened to cover.)

The contest

I’m guessing most of you didn’t see the Hawks’ 8-2 start coming. So that got me thinking, what happens over the next 10 games? Here are the rules. Guess the team’s record over the next 10 (10 points), predict each game (one point each) and offer a prediction on something that happens over that span (1-10 points, to be judged by me on creativity and probability of occurence. For example, “Joe Johnson will lead the team in scoring at least once” is a 1. “Jeff Teague will average a triple-double” is a 10. Actually, if you make that prediction and it comes to pass, you’ll win the contest outright and Rick Sund may come calling for you.)

I reserve the right to decide that only entrants who pick the record accurate can win, depending on how busy/not excited about tabulating scores I am. Not sure what the prize will be, but I’ll try to come up with something good.

(Entering multiple times under different screen names is not cool and not sporting.)

Deadline is tipoff of tonight’s game.

Good luck to ya.

Josh Smith cleans up! That man is going to lead the league in rebounding if he keeps this up. He is unstoppable when he goes all out.

I always think in that situation the best thing to do is to foul soon as they catch the ball. Could you imagine if they would’ve fouled Oden?

Initial Response! I cannot believe that 3 by Rudy, but Hawks now in a dog fight. They should pull off this win, but Marvin has to sit and jamal has to play.

Hawks are really pulling together for this one! THIS IS WHAT A WINNING TEAM LOOKS LIKE! Portland is giving us their best shot, we are sustaining the blows and still ahead. WOW! What a game. This game is a true testament to how improved these hawks are. Definitely an elite team in the East. The Hawks have now entered the conversation.

Winning against a good team when we don’t play very well. Yet another step in the process. And with Portlands size and the way the play D, they are a top 3 team in the west. LA, DEN, Blazers.

Wow, look at the games by our “undersized frontcourt”

Josh Smith: 20 pts 16 reb 2 blk
Al Horford: 15 pts 10 reb 2blk

Against their HUGE front line. Not too bad!

I’m glad to see us getting some of those calls! We can get caught with the officiating at times and it’s hurt us in the past. Case in point Josh with the tech during the ugly 3rd quarter. We did this basically without Crawford and Marvin contributing!

Also, the Hawks are better defensively this season. I think the fact that they score the ball better has caused them to relax on D for the first 3 qtrs, usless they feel that the other team can challenge them. I would say that tonight they felt challenged.

Game ball goes to JJ and Josh. Josh had 20 pts, and 16 rebs (after getting 17 and 17 last game). Early on, JJ was pounding the ball too much, but in the end, he hit some clutch shots, finishing with 35 pts, 9 assists.

Great win Hawks. Way to tighten up defensively too.

The Hawksta

Nique has finally laid off Josh. He usually kills him during the broadcast! Josh is definitely giving us whatever we need. Assist, rebounds, block shots, you name it he is doing it. Horford is so strong downlow! He dosn’t mind playing center. If you noticed in the second half him and Josh switched and he played Aldridge and Josh played Oden. So that gives him a chance to rest if they continue to do that.

So what if Flip got 31? He’s not Hawk anymore so let’s not lose sleep over that. Don’t get me wrong, I loved him as a Hawk but seriously Jamal Crawford is waaaaaay better in every way except defensively. Yes he played like trash on a night that Flip lit the Magic up, but it happens. Even the best players have bad games (heck, even Kobe shot 5 for 20 last night against Houston)

Great win. I’m not saying this win was as big as the Boston win, but they proved a lot today too. When you can play D+ basketball for 3 quarters and still pull out a victory against a legitimate playoff team, you are pretty damn legit yourself. Loved the resilience of the Hawks, staying collected and cool in that 4th quarter and overtime and coming back to win. I wouldn’t count this team out against anyone, anywhere the way they are playing.
