I know you didn't see enough of rookie point guard Jeff Teague against Portland. Who wants to be their lunch money that he plays big minutes against Sacramento tonight?
SACRAMENTO – Before you finish your sentence complaining about Jeff Teague not playing against Portland and Joe Johnson playing too much, chew on one thing.
What if you are not alone? What if you’re not the only fan base whose general manager, coach, star player, sixth-man and last man on the roster drive you crazy?
What, you thought you cornered the market on being ticked off?
You are not.
Our good friend Nire passed along this message earlier today (or last night or whenever, being out west throws off my equilibrium, even after all these years of covering the league):
It’s always funny to me reading Blazers fan blogs and seeing how not alone Hawks fans are in our neuroses. Blazers fans have their own Mike Bibby (Andre Miller), JJ (Brandon Roy), Josh Smith (Travis Outlaw), Marvin Williams (Martell Webster), Teague (Jerryd Bayless), Al Horford (Greg Oden), and Zaza Pachulia (Joel Przybilla). They even talk about Nate McMillan almost exactly like we talk about Mike Woodson. Seriously, it’s uncanny. I just emailed Big Ray a series of blog posts from BlazersEdge where you could just substitute in the Hawks’ player’s names and it would be a typical comment section in your blog. My favorites:
“Brandon has dribblexia”
“Oden needs to be further integrated into the offense—immediately!”
“This team has needed a defensive-minded off guard — not a floor general (i.e., Miller), midget shooting guard (i.e, Bayless), or athletically challenged off guard (i.e., Steve Blake) — so Kevin Pritchard not trading for Kirk Hinrich midway through last season is inexcusable in my opinion.”
But why be like everybody else when you can move on? This is the time for a fresh start for your team and for you as fans. The Sacramento Kings await tonight at Arco Arena. They’re a new challenge, something else to focus on.
Win another game out here and then you can really start getting crazy about what could be in this first month of the season. Either way, I’m moving on tonight. No more griping about Mo Evans seeing limited minutes against the Trail Blazers after playing so well up until that game. I’m done taking shots at Marvin because he can’t seem to find his groove.
It’s time for a fresh start (tip off is at 10 p.m., don’t be late).

Did Sekou just give his 2 minutes notice and go?
AJC seems in a lurch, and nothing but an AP article on the game last night. Of course the AJC seems to be doing mostly everything with twine and bailing wire (and no editing) these days, so I can see how so many good writers and persons would have to (or be forced to) bail.
Still, somebody should officially say something soon about future Hawks coverage.

Yeah, if wed have kept flip, and let zaza go, let the contracts of speedy and acie expire, how many millions would we have saved? Would we be in a better position financially at the end of the year to go after the missing pieces to get us over the fourth seed hump?… Just a question or two, keep your shirt on, like to think outside the box some times….

FOOD FOR THOUGHT-Joe Smith refused to resign with the Cavaliers because after averaging about 19MPG with them during the regular season, he got the ALaw treatment during the playoffs. After Sund and the ASG went all out to get him to sign with us, he’s now getting the same ALaw treatment he got in last yrs playoffs.

Please, will someone explain why we went to so much trouble to sign Joe Johnson just to see him sit on the bench and get, at most, token mins? Also, will one of you with an unnatural man crush on Woodson please contact him and let him know that just because a PG is considered a PG of the future, it doesn’t mean he has to sit until that future comes. In Teagues case, it doesn’t mean 3yrs from now when Bibby’s contract expires.

My fault KS- I thought it was you but i guess not. I remember sumone going off about Crawford making 9 mill a year and how his contributions would be minimal.
After watching 7 games -I think Teague is ready to start. His shot is a LIL shakey but his penetrating ability and on ball D makes up for that. Augustine is really quick but Teague stayed with him for the most part, something bibby probably couldnt do. The only problem is Coach X is loyal to Marvin and Bibby even tho Mo/Teague give you the same production.
Jeez i see why Collins doesnt start- He is huge easily 300+ but looks soft and outta shape. The man should only play against Shaq,Perkins,Howard only.
Cant believe im say’n this but maybe Morris should get a few more minutes.
This switching Defense puts our players in bad matchups alot of times…IE Bibby guarding Diaw- The defensive specialist Coach X needs to make a few adjustments—Can u see bibby guarding Melo or Jr Smith off the switch……Bad Things Man

Sekou-best of everything in the future–you’ll be missed!
A few random thoughts:
1) A lot of guys wanted JJ to become a vocal leader–be careful what you wish for because you may not like what you get. He’s speaking out and calling out his teammates for their lack of consistent performance–especially on the defensive side of the ball. It is obvious that he has a problem with someone in the starting line-up not named Mike Bibby (my guess is Josh Smith) and probably won’t sign an extension unless or until that person is no longer with the team.
2) Those of you who are bashing Marvin Williams are way off-base. The man only took four shots yesterday, made two of them and the man he defended didn’t lead Charlotte in scoring. By the way, why is it that Marvin Williams only shows flashes of his talent when JJ is unable to play?
3) Has anyone else noticed that the Hawks start three guys whose games are very similar? While JJ has some 1-on-1 skills, he, Bibby and Williams are at their best when someone else penetrates and dishes to them for an open jumper. Since Smith and Horford don’t command that double-team from the post, and none of the five starters is a penetrator, is it any wonder why the Hawks’ half-court offense is inconsistent.
4)Chris Paul is visibly unhappy in New Orleans and will become moreso as losses continue to mount. Since Hornet ownership wants and needs salary relief, the Hawks should send Josh Smith, Jeff Teague, Mike Bibby, Maurice Evans and Randolph Morris to the Hornets for Paul and Peja Stojakovic. The Hawks could have a starting five of C-Jason Collins, PF-Al Horford, SF-Williams, SG-Johnson and PG-Paul with PG/SG Crawford, SF-Stojakovic, PF-Joe Smith and C-Zaza Pachulia as the second unit. Now you can re-sign blog favorite Garrett Siler, and either fan favorite Mario West or a vet like Jerry Stackhouse to fill out the roster. The Hornets would start Okafor, West and Smith up front with Peterson and Bibby still have Posey, Evans, plus a rookie PG to groom in Teague, plus major salary cap relief (saving $7 million on Bibby for Paul and $3 million on Smith for Stojakovic) going forward.

Jay even if that deal was even remotely possible. I’m sure you would find more fans who are willing to give up JJ quicker than Smoove and Teague. Big Ray, I have a serious suggestion — now that we don’t have a beat writer, you should ask the AJC if they will issue you a press credential to let you cover Hawks games as part of the media. Ramon,
You’re right–JJ would be more attractive in the deal than Smith but Hornet ownership would be crucified for trading their best player for what would amount to a one-year rental (much like the Hawks did when they traded Dominique for Danny Manning). The biggest part of the cap relief comes from adding Stojakovic into the deal. Bottom line–the Hawks need a superstar; preferably one who is unhappy where he is. No one else out there fits that bill. Adding him gives the team an identity and changes the Hawks from a championship pretender into a championship contender.

Now we see why people complain when Woody played JJ 45 minutes the game against Portland, when Teague got no burn at all. Or when JJ played 38 minutes against Sacramento, and Teague only got 5. Because although we won those 2 games, our guys were tired last night. Maybe if Woody would play his bench more minutes, guys would not have been so tired. These are the kind of teams we are supposed to beat on the road if we want to be a .500 road team.
I really liked the ball movement from Charlotte. If Woody wants to be like Larry Brown, why cant we do more of that? I remember Larry Brown’s system also got Rip Hamilton easy shots in Detroit. Why cant we get JJ some easy looks? And I hate our switching defense, because it leads to mismatches for the other team.

“I don’t know when we all of a sudden just really became a selfish team,” Johnson said. “Now everybody wants to go one-on-one. It’s me, me, me. It’s crazy, man.”
Coach Mike Woodson called the performance “unacceptable” and was unwilling to blame it on the travel. Johnson added he’s been seeing signs of trouble despite recent victories.
“Everybody who touches it wants to score,” Johnson said. “I really think guys on this team don’t know their roles, so it’s killing us. And it’s going to continue to kill us.”

To me it’s MUCH more important that we work inside out EVEN IF THE FRONTCOURT DOES NOT TAKE THE SHOT.
I’m saying that it makes the defense react when the ball goes inside. If that gives us more open looks, REGARDLESS OF WHO SHOOTS THE BALL, then I’ll be happier. The idea is to make them work on defense. When we go ISO, their defense gets too much rest.
The idea I was trying to convey. Your a better word smith.

That all sounds well and good if it weren’t for the fact that about half of Josh’s shots are mid-range jumpers, and JJ posts up quite a bit (and more this year than in past years). That’s why categorizing the shots by players is overly simplistic.
I do explain my thoughts simply. And I agree with your points. I do not do 10,000 word essays or debate small points. Rather try to convey the general theme of to many jump shots and letting opposing defenses off the hook along with etc………………….

Kevin A, Niremental, Sautee, all great points! Inside out, much like a fb team establishing a running game first. Another observation if I may,
more movement(motion)would allow for opportunities such as, Joe posting up, Josh shootig mid-range but coming off screens and getting his shot in rhythm instead of stand still set shots. It would involve everyone.

KEVINA-I understand perfectly what you’re saying about distribution of shots. However, the unequal distribution of shots taken on our team is propotional to the unequal distribution of scoring ability on our team. You must factor in the fact that our OFF is designed to accomodate the outshooting ability JJ and Bibby, while addressing Bibby’s limited PG skills. Horford and Smoove just aren’t offensively talented enough to be consistent scorers on their own, and Marvin isn’t asked to do so in this OFF. If you replaced Bibby with Teague as the starting PG, you’d see an increase in shots taken and scoring from Horford, Marvin and Smoove.
If I had to start a team from sctatch I would pick our front court. This is my argument for better shot distrubition. Like the football analogy. You can’t pass if you don’t run. To be as simple as possible – we shoot to many jumpers with our skill set. Front court and back court. Along with not running enough etc………
Thanks for your input and comments. I also understand we are a work in progress. It may take another year or two for our kids (Al, Josh, Marvin, JT) Ken Strickland

“I really think guys on this team don’t know their roles, so it’s killing us.”
That’s the line that stands out to me. He’s not calling out his teammates there. He’s squarely calling out Woody for not having an offensive system in place that puts the supporting players in a position to maximize their talents. Many people on this blog including myself have been saying this for a few years now, that Josh Smith and Al Horford in particular would be much more effective if they had well defined roles where they could concentrate on what they did best.

This season, Smoove has been just as much of a positive asset as JJ has in terms of overall games, and so has Horford. I think JJ feels the control and leadership of the team is shifting over. I truly believe JJ is threatened that the team may be able to be a better team without him being the dominant player on the court. On THIS roster, if JJ tried to be a better defensive player than an offensive player, I think that would be contagious throughout the roster. I’ve never heard JJ say he desires to be on the All Defensive team, although he has the skills to do so. Everyone, including him, should know the transition game would bring every one enough stats and touches. However the best spark plug for the transition game is defense. When was the last time an opposing back court had a bad game against the Hawks? And does that not start with the leader of the team, especially if he plays a back court position?

You hit the nail on the head with your last post, Najeh. For years people have criticized the Hawks for lacking a team identity and cohesion, and for leaving players’ roles ambiguous (which is why our PF ends up 20 feet from the basket so much). This is the second time that JJ has drawn attention to that in the past two weeks. The easy thing is to read it as a critique of his teammates, but it doesn’t take much codebreaking to view it as a critique of Woody – after all, isn’t it the coach’s job to give the team an identity and define players’ roles?

From the way Joe has been sounding off lately I wouldn’t be shocked if he walks after this year. He has never complained this much this early into a season. Might have to explore a trade with Joe around the trading deadline just so we wont lose him for nothing. Think about it, he left a Phoenix team that was close to going to the finals to come to a team coming off a 13 win season. All im saying is he has shown before if the money is there he is willing to go regardless of how good the team is. Just something to think about.

nire I was actually wondering about that the other day pertaining to roles on the team. Its crazy that Woody has been the coach this long and guys are still talking about knowing their roles and what type of team we are. From last nights game you can tell Woody still has no idea what kind of rotation he wants either. He was just throwing line ups out there. As much as we all wanted more depth on this team, Woody has shown in the past he does better when he has less to work with. More options just seem to throw off his game plans or whatever you want to call them.

Hey joe please don’t speak up and try to take leader ship.
Joe Johnson was not happy with his Hawks’ teammates after Friday’s loss, saying “we became a selfish team. Now everybody wants to go one-on-one. It’s me, me, me.”
“Everybody who touches it wants to score,” Johnson said. “I really think guys on this team don’t know their roles, so it’s killing us. And it’s going to continue to kill us.” Johnson, whose numbers are down, is playing for a contract and it was not tough to see this coming, as he’s not used to having a gunner like Jamal Crawford in the backcourt with him. The Hawks are a dangerous and deep team, but Mike Woodson had better grab some control before internal strife becomes a real problem.

I am really pulling for the Hawks to do well this yr, and I actually want Woody to prove us all wrong too……but I am not starting to get that lump in my throat after going thru this first week 1/2. First of all Teague has to play, there was and is no excuse to sit him, barring injury, for an entire game. Teague has all of the skills that we want in a point guard…the guy is young, quick, can penetrate the lane, pass the ball, etc. Woody cannot and will not develope Teague with his inconsistent style of coaching unless he changes something. Acie Law was not a bad player….he was a college standout who came to Atlanta with high hopes, and showed flashes of greatness in his early games with the hawks, but he lost his way and confidence in Woody’s system. Mike Bibby has been good for the hawks, but I definately think that Teague should be starting b/c the hawks have gone as far as they can with Bibby…..and that is to the 2nd rd of the playoffs. Am I annoiting Teague as the next great pg…noooo, but I am saying that he would know his role……and that would be to bring the ball upcourt, penetrate the lane, dish the ball off, and get his teamates more involved. Woody you have a very good bench and a starting core that has been together for 3 solid yrs…..there are no room for excuses, the next level is now, so come with it, or dont let the door hit u in the azz on the way out.

I think the Hawks need to get off to a good first fifteen games, make the nba circuit one time then look at giving teague more time. Being exposed as a rookie always hurts the ego. I dont think acie will ever be any more than mediocre. Many outstanding collegiate players went burst in the NBA. Dont rust teague or he may join the numbers.

Sund and the ASG has got to start looking at the longterm ramifications of Woodsons continued irrational actions. Like CP said, JJ will likely walk, and I’m certain Joe Smith will take the same attitude towards us that he took when he refused to resign with Cleveland, and for the same reason.
Woodson’s refusal to play Joe Smith and JCollins will make it much more difficult for the team to sign quality vet FA in the future. Players know what’s going on with various teams and HC’s, and will make their choices accordingly. Any productive vet that signs a decent one yr contract is looking for an opportunity to show he deserves a longer contract, or at least another decent one yr contract. What do you think the chances of that happening be if he thinks he might end up geting the ALaw treatment, like JSmith and JCollins have gotten so far?
That means that no quality vet will waste time signing with the Hawks, as long as Woodson is the HC, unless he has absolutely no other options. And what quality FA vet would have no other options? We’re in the 6th yr of Woodson’s tenure, and we’re still looking for him to act like he has the intelligence, ability or inclination to develop the PG of the future this franchise needs. Someone needs to tell him that MIKE BIBBY isn’t what the franchise means when there’s talk about PG of the future.
Before this off season, one of Woodson’s biggest excuses for over playing his starters, and not using his bench, was its lack of talent, depth and experience. Well, Sund added depth, talent and experience, and we’re still seeing the same old SH!T from Woodson. I guess that proves he was only using those issues as excuses to mask his limitations as a HC. TAKE NOTE RICK SUND!
CP-I’m not so sure having more players and talent to work with throws his gm plan off as much as it exposes his lack of one. Isn’t it a negative indictment for any HC, going into his 6th yr of tenue, when his veteran players are still complaining about their roles? AGAIN, MAYBE WE’RE SEEING WHY SUND REFUSED TO COMMIT TO WOODSON.
