LaMarcus Aldridge will get a chance to get after Josh Smith (hand reaching for the ball) and the Hawks tonight at the Rose Garden. A knee injury won't keep him on the sideline (and major props to my man Salim Stoudamire - corner right - who is one of Portland's All-Time finest).
PORTLAND – Pump your brakes.
I’ll do it if you do it.
Because it appears we’ve gone a bit overboard with the panic room act after the Hawks’ loss Sunday in Los Angeles to the Lakers.
More than a couple Hawks reminded me before, during and after practice Monday that we’re still in the first, five-game stint of the season. We’re just three games in, with Game 4 up tonight against a strong Trail Blazers team at the Rose Garden.
“People had us winning the championship last year when we got off to that 6-0 start,” Hawks captain and All-Star Joe Johnson said and then laughed. “Everybody needs to calm down and just keep working. It’s a long season, man. Every coach I’ve ever had tells you that [the season] is a marathon and not a sprint. And that’s true. Don’t get me wrong, you’ve got to play with urgency. But you also have to keep the season in perspective.”
Perspective is something that would come in handy around here, for me and for you.
I’m not in the habit of predicting disasters but I can admit to having a bad feeling about that Lakers game. I knew they’d be hungry to make a point after losing at home the Mavericks a couple nights earlier. And I know the Hawks have a penchant for not fully understanding what it is to be focused, locked and loaded on the road.
JJ erased any fears I had with his outlandish first quarter performance against the Lakers. After he lit Kobe Bryant up for 18 points in nine minutes I started crafting my “Hawks finally show claws at Staples” story. Then the third quarter came along and I hit the delete button.
This game against the Blazers presents a similarly tough challenge; my guess is road teams won’t find this venue much easier to deal with this season than they do Staples Center. It also provides the Hawks with a chance for a little Rip City redemption. Find a way to outwork the Blazers and their All-Star (Brandon Roy)-led crew and maybe we can put file that Lakers debacle away for nit-picking at a later date.
CLOSE TO HOME
For Seattle natives like Jamal Crawford and Marvin Williams, the annual trip here to Portland is closest they’ll get to home. Since the Sonics packed up shop and moved to Oklahoma City (and were renamed the Thunder), there’s been a huge void in the road schedule for teams used to doing the Pacific Northwest two-step between this city and it’s neighbor to the north.
For guys who grew up immersed in the NBA culture that that Sonics provided that void is even more pronounced.
“You grow up your whole life dreaming about making the league and playing for the Sonics,” Williams said. “I was lucky enough to make it and play in Seattle before they [left town]. But it’s brutal, not having them anymore. It still stings for a lot of people and probably always will.”
Marvin’s career-high remains the 33 points he dropped on his hometown team Jan. 25, 2008. In fact, he’s always played well when the Hawks travel to this northwest corridor of the country. Maybe it’s all the family and friends that come to see him. Or maybe it’s just being in familiar territory that gets him going. Whatever it is, don’t be surprised to see both Marvin and Jamal go off tonight against the Blazers.
GOOD JOSH, BAD JOSH
There’s a funny, or not so funny depending on your perspective, debate that happens on press row shortly after the start of most Hawks games about which Josh Smith is in the building.
Is it good Josh (the one averaged 18.5 points and led the Hawks in assists by attacking the paint in the first two games of this season) or bad Josh (the one that showed up for that Lakers game and rarely ventured inside on offense and remained largely ineffective for all but a few minutes)?
The Hawks need good Josh to show up against the Trail Blazers tonight. They need the active Josh, the one that played superbly at home in wins over both the Pacers and Wizards to start the season. They need the Josh that changes games with his defensive presence and triggers and finishes fast breaks like few players in the league can.
What they don’t need is the Josh that spends more time complaining to the referees than he does chasing rebounds and loose balls. They don’t need the Josh that refuses to dive to the basket when JJ has the ball on the wing and is being double teamed and needs a safety valve.
I’ve debated with numerous folks – scouts, agents, executives, other players and just about anyone else you can imagine – this notion that the Hawks go as he Josh goes. I’ve never really bought into that premise. But I’m starting to see the light. When he’s at his best, the Hawks are literally at their best. And when he’s not … you saw the Lakers game.
ALDRIDGE TO PLAY?
The status of Trail Blazers big man LaMarcus Aldridge is no longer uncertain for tonight’s game. The knee injury he suffered during Sunday’s win over Oklahoma City is not expected keep him out of the game, per the Oregonian.
Aldridge has given the Hawks major fits here – averaging 20.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in Portland’s last two games against the Hawks here.
ONE LAST THING
I ran across this link that is required reading from Yahoo! Sports columnist Adrian Wojnarowski. Woj attacks the simmering issue that is Chris Paul’s plight in New Orleans. It’s good stuff. Take a break from work, my treat, and read it. You’ll be glad you did.

the problem is, these aren’t new problems that have plagued the Hawks. The poor shot selection, the poor ball movement and the poor defense are things that plague the Hawks against the elite teams in the league. It doesn’t mean they aren’t the fourth best team in the East anymore, it proves that they are the same old team they’ve always been. If you’re holding out hope that it’s going to change, well you’re going to be waiting for a long time.

Sekou…Marvin has been getting killed on the blog since the Laker game, and deservedly so. Is it just wishful thinking that he can step up his game. Are we all secretly just hoping he becomes an 18-20 scorer to somehow justify taking him over Paul and Deron Williams. I just dont see a guy capable of averages better then 13 and 6. Please Sekou…tell me I’m wrong

The hawks are a good team and will be ok. The reason they will not be looked at a as championship caliber team is because they don’t have a constant go to guy down low.

Marvin has struggled. But Marvin’s a heady cat. He knows he’s struggled. That’s why he was getting extra work after practice in LA Monday. He’s not going to go into a funk. He’ll do what all smart young players do and get back to work to fix whatever is wrong Mike.

Sekou,
We havent seen Collins yet this season, and I really think we could have used him (legit 7 footer who plays defense) against Bynum, because Horford wasnt giving us much defensively or offensively.
Is Collins injured? And if so, is there a prognosis for when he might be ready to play?

So one road game and @danweiner is ready to pass judegement? In these kind of games the Hawks would’ve lost by 40 but the final score was only an 8 point defeat. Is this how it’s going to be after every time we lose a game? I mean seriously. If Atlanta goes 10-1 to start the season are we going to continue to talk about that one game we lost? We’ve seen some of the “elite” teams also have their moments. The Lakers lost by 14 to the Mavs this year, the Celts were beaten by the Bobcats last year, the Cavs are what 1-2 or 2-2? Lets wait until we are quarter into the season to pass any judgments on this team.
O’Brien, what is a legit 7 footer? I never understood the notion.
Mike N. what are Chris Paul and D. Williams doing right now for their teams? It gets annoying hearing about CPIII and D. Williams and what they could be doing for us now. Marvin providdes a lot more versatility than both of them. He can guard a lot of the SFs PFs and SGs in this league. He hasn’t started off like he did last year, but it’s only 3 games into the season.

LOL @ the part on Marvin. People thinking Marvin will bounce back. It’s not hard to go from a “bad” 6 point game to his astonishing regular average of 12 ppg. What’s that? One open jumpshot and a few free throws? Marvin will bounce back and only fall down once during this game, rather than 3 times! Of course it being Portland, he may even score 15 points, since he had such a breakout year last year. LOL this guy is a joke.
And the Hawks know Aldridge is frail right now. What will they do? Nothing. Horford will accidentally foul Aldridge and then help him up (like we did in the Cleveland series) and apologize. Roy will destroy us in the 3rd qtr if we don’t adjust.
START CRAWFORD OVER MARVIN. I AM NOT BEING A KNEE-JERK REACTOR. I’VE ALWAYS THOUGHT MARVIN SUCKS. GET RID OF THIS FRAIL AWKWARD TIMID MOCKERY OF A PLAYER

What do you people want from Marvin? What do you expect when he’s on a team with GREEDY GUARDS!? Did you watch the LA game… not only did Joe go off and possibly deservedly so didn’t pass much… but Marv didn’t even TOUCH THE BALL ON OFFENSE TILL MORE THAN HALFWAY THROUGH THE 1st QUARTER! You expect a guy who isn’t integrated into the offense for MINUTES at a time to do what? Show u 18 to 20 points a game… please. Atleast when the guy got the ball he was still motivated enough to shoot it.. missed ‘em.. but he took the shots.
I just don’t understand how some people fail to realize that when the team goes to Marvin he performs. Marv can’t make Bibby, Joe, Jamal pass to him… he can’t make Woody go away from ISO JOE even tho everyone in the world knows that’s whats comin! If Marv sucks its because our guards are STINGY! Start making the EXTRA PASS! that’s high school basketball… why don’t the hawks get that? 3 games in and Marv is struggling. I’d bet money that he buckles down and gets his in the next 3 weeks.

I disagree somewhat about what Marvin can do about it. Good offensive players demand the ball occasionally. If Marvin did that, the guards would get it to him, but I have never seen him do it. He just needs to be more aggressive, more assertive, and you can do that without the ball.

Sekou, what do you think about a guy like Stephen Jackson on the Hawks (again)? He’s definitely available, and makes about the same amount of money as Marvin. Marvin probably can’t be traded even up for a year because of the base-year-compensation thing, but it is interesting to think about what a guy like Jackson could add — especially if Joe is right that they are too “soft.”

Hawks going 10 & 1 would be nice, but would not take away the fact that Bynum kicked our butt and Woody did nothing about it. I would have assume Collins was brought in to provide veteran leadership, experienced defense in the post & rebounding. Why was he not inserted in the game to take on the challenge of Bynum in the post? He was destroying our bigs, it was like Kareem againsts Spud Webb. This game showed me our biggest obstacle going forward is Woody.
As one poster stated it depends on WWWD “What Would Woody Do”….current answer is nothing.
Props to JJ for going off on Kobe in his house in the first quarter. That said he needed to stay engaged for the duration of the game, because will always take on the challenge…JJ tailed off but Kobe stayed engaged until the deal was done.
Just one loss, but you can learn alot about your coach in such games, once again Woody not able to make in game adjustments, which gives the appearance the same coach patrolls the our sidelines. He must use the new pieces at the appropriate time. You can’t say whether Collins would not have made a difference, because Woody gave him a DNP???????? “WWWD”

I don’t think success or failure comes down to any one player…when the Hawks lose badly, it always seems like 3-4 guys lay an egg, not just any 1. Josh was at his best in a lot of our playoff games, and it didn’t make a difference – to use one crude example, the Hawks went 1-3 in the playoff games where Josh led the team in scoring. In any case, I don’t think that the correlation is much stronger with Josh than it is with any of the other starters.

I have so much more respect for Chris Paul than his “superstar peers” like Lebron, Wade, and some of the others. He, like K.G., just goes out there and plays regardless of who’s around him. they put up numbers when it’s needed not because it gets them attention. Rondo needs to pump his breaks because he is not the reason Boston is at the level they are.

Atlanta fans are the biggest bandwagon fans ever. After one road game against the World Champs everyone is ready to write the team off. The season is 82 games so the Hawks have played 4% of the season to date. With fans like this you deserve for the Hawks to go back to 20-30 wins every year. Atl fans are the same no matter what the sport, look at all the Falcon fans crying about the season already.

I totally agree with the statement about Josh Smith. When he is playing at a high level the Hawks are a tough team to beat. I even remember Joe making a statement about that. Regarding the Wojnarowski link, I’m pretty sure I posted this on the blog over the summer and I’ll repeat it again — for the Hawks, Chris Paul is the most easily acquirable superstar in the league, and it’s not out of the question that penny-pinching New Orleans would consider a trade involving Joe Johnson. Of course it will be difficult this offseason to come up with a sign and trade for Johnson without alienating him, but I’m pretty sure a package of, say, Joe Johnson, Jeff Teague, and a first-rounder would at least get the Hornets thinking.

Plus, you will never see me curse like my emasculated young alter ego, Sybil. Now; I would like to share 4 pts.:
1. Recently “vava 74″ mentioned a minor pt. about the Hawks never shoot
coming off screens. Minor pt. wi. major consequences…rhythm
shooters will improve their % just by implementing that 1 minor
aspect and I think it would greatly help Josh in his mid-range
game. Perhaps – give Josh a rule [no set shots] he must only shoot
jumpers coming off screens.
2. Marv: supposedly worked on his “driving game.” Marv is not a
slasher *this is an example of not understanding one’s role,
although I think a better word is skill set.
3. Joe did not get all 18 1st qtr. pts. on jumpers. He had one beautiful
post score when he sealed his man off a high/low feed. Why did we
not see that again?
4. Last for right now – Don’t forget Josh still had 7 assts. v. LA.

We are going to lose between 25-30 games this year and we are going to lose to some very good teams. What we need to ask is, are we better?
I think we are better and that is all I can expect from the Hawks. I need to believe that they are doing the best they can with the resources they have. No one is going to trade a low post center for Marvin or Josh…and Paul isn’t coming to Atlanta for Bibby.
What we have to do is make small additions and hope the young players mature to championship caliber. Most championship teams are built through the draft and grow-up together. We have a very strong nucleus of players and the Hawks will be good for the next 5 years and every year I will have hope.

Lebron, wade,JJ could learn a few things from this guy….O wait JJ aient a superstar- Lebron/Wade then
Have to disagree on Rondo, he is a major part of what they do and what they are. I couldnt believe the numbers yungn was putting up in the Playoffs. if i had to take one player from that team it would definitely be Rondo-23 yo stud who will be in the best Pg conversations for years to come.

Marvin, Bibby and Mo/Teaque will get Chris Paul here. Remember , the Hawks are his favorite team. BUT, Woodson didn’t want him so there is a problem.
Reading between the lines in the CP III piece, he wants out but won’t go public because of his loyalty to his teammates and the organization can’t take on the comparable salary of his possible replacement trade wise(sound familiar?)Therefore, a creative deal would have to be structures to provide frontcourt scoring help for the Hornets; a “name” replacement for CPIII at the point and a salary ,preferably an expiring contract to round out the numbers.
The Hawks would have a bona fide superstar ,who is 24, at a posistion of need. The only thing again is that such a deal would require some line up changes that Woodson would be loath to make. But maybe ,for once, it wouln’t be about him , it would be about the championship aspirations of Hawk fans like me.

SEKOU- You love that picture of Wooody, don’t you! Me too! It looks like he’s busting a move out there! Hilarious! As for the Hawks, I expect them to come out and make a statement tonight. It’s not how you lose, it’s how you respond to a loss. We need to play lights-out tonight because we are going against a Portland team that matches up well with us (Meaning they have multiple true 7ft. centers) and wants this to be a statement game for them that they are for real. Expect Jamal Crawford to go off tonight. BTW, Marvin Williams played so bad in that last game, I am really regretting us giving him that long-term deal this summer. Do you ever think he will reach his supposed “potential” with us? It seems like all he does is run towards the basket and yell and fall down, hoping for a foul call, and if he isn’t hitting his shots, the guy is worhtless! I’m going to just come out and say it: Marvin Williams is a BUST, drafting him over CP3/Deron Williams is one of the great draft blunders of all time, comparable to Sam Bowie over Jordan! And how about drafting Sheldon Williams over Brandon Roy? It hurts, Sekou, it hurts so bad, and we will see why tonight! Give me less Marvin and more Mo Evans!

ILL-logical,
I like your proposal, but I think Grandad is right. Hornets would want to include a bad contract to make the trade look better for them (and to look better to their fans).
In my opinion, if we were to make this deal at the end of this season, it would have to be a deal like Peja Stojakovich ($14 mil) and Chris Paul ($14 mil) for Jamal Crawford (expiring contract at ~$10mil), Marvin Williams ($8 mil) and Mike Bibby ($6 mil).
Looking at what CP3 did for Tyson Chandler and David West, I can only imagine what he could do for Al Horford and Josh Smith. Plus Woody would still get a PG who can knock down jumpers, drive and dish, come up with steals, and get JJ the ball in good spots.
Anyways, if the Hawks can make a deal for CP3 at the end of the season, I hope they look into it, and I really think Woody would be on board.

Not to be rude O’Brien…but I don’t think Mr.Sund would care if Woody

CP3 or Deron might be the only two that would inspire me to inclue J.Teague in any trade right now. Also Marv prob. would benefit from a change of scenery much like “Frenchy” only dif. reasons. Wouldn’t it be ironic if such a trade were to take place, it may be the only way some will ever forgive Marv for simply being chosen.

The best PG for this team, under this coach is Crawford…Woodson wants a Big(6,5″) offensive minded(19pts)PG to run his system. Crawford and Joe would create match-up problems for teams in the league and it would cut down on the double teams on Joe.
But I will take Paul if they can get him, because the Hawks would be exciting…
Isn’t he a defensive liability..like Bibby?

How many more seasons must we wait for “bad” Josh to stop showing up half of the time and be able to expect a CONSISTENT performance from him???
The hawks offense = get the ball….take your man to the hoop one on one…..or take the jump shot.
Josh isnt good at either one. He could be deadly in an offense with a lot of movement or an uptempo style, which obviously isnt gonna happen with Woody being the coach.
As long as Woody is the coach with his offensive scheme, I dont see Josh improving offensively.
Get Woodson out of here, or Trade Josh for a player(s) that fit Woodson’s offense better.
As for Marvin, he isnt all that but can have a nice streaky jumper. He is expendable, but the SF position can be better suited simply by starting Mo Evans and bringing Marvin off the bench.

Does anyone know if they Hawks watch film and break it down after games? There is no way that they can be watching film and see Josh hoist shot after shot and not say anything. Watching film will improve your game individually and as a team.

ILL-logical,
I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that after Chris Paul worked out for the Hawks, Mike Woodson had nothing but good things to say about him and even said he was going to be really good in this league. He said the same thing about Deron Williams. It was Billy Knight who didn’t think Paul was going to be a good player.

Alot of the points being made by posters on this blog after the Lakers loss are not people saying the Hawks are done and won’t make the playoffs and are a completely terrible team. Rather, folks have seen the real weaknesses in this team that have lingered for some time and are ready for them to be LEGITIMATELY addressed. To pass that off as everyone is overreacting is not accurate and it’s refusing to acknowledge the very REAL flaws in this team. These flaws won’t just go away on their own. At some point, if the Hawks are to reach the next level, they’ll need to be addressed. This blog has some VERY knowledgeable basketball fans on it and when the flaws of this reveal themselves again, those fans will and should point them out.

Balance, Balance, Balance
In the Laker game we lost it. Why I don’t know. Maybe Odem and Bynim are just intimidating or maybe without a home town crowd pushing them we just turn soft.
Here are the numbers.
Marvin/Hunter Evans – 11 shots. This number should be closer to 15.
Josh/Al/ Smith/Collins/Morris – 24 shots. This number should be closer to 32.
JJ/Bibby/Crawford/JT – 47 shots. This number way to high.
Shot Selection, Shot Selection, Shot Selection
Even when the ball did move past the back court we still shot to many jumpers. JT was the only player that seemed to mix his game and was the main reason we made a push when it was to late. Part of the responsibility of the back court is to get the big’s the ball in a position for easy scores. What did they do instead? shoot 7-23 from the 3 pt line. What happened to driving and kicking. What happened to attacking the rim.
If we do not play with balance and attack the rim – look for another loss.

I don’t think success or failure comes down to any one player…when the Hawks lose badly, it always seems like 3-4 guys lay an egg, not just any 1.
I agree, it was like Easter Sunday with the eggs being turnovers.

Say what you want about how Rondo has benefited from playing with the Big 3 but right now, he and Chris Paul are a toss up. Actually I would rather have Rondo. He’s faster, a better defender and rebounder and tougher. I admire Paul for not throwing his guys under the bus but he better start speaking up if he wants to win.
I can smell a “monkey in the middle remix” coming tonight. The Blazers have close to the same type of length and talent as the Lakers. The difference is that they don’t play the defense that the Lakers do.
Somebody here mention Stephen Jackson. Forget about it. These guys want choir boys around here. You know “good character” guys.

Actually Jody it was Woodson who did not want CP3 He even admitted last year he didn’t think Paul would be this good because he thought he was to small, couldn’t shoot, and would have trouble on the defensive end.
Roy and Outlaw always give us trouble. I don’t think tonight will be any different. I want to see fewer turnovers and more willingness to drive to the bucket instead of jacking up jumpers all night. Maybe Marvin will actually remember the regular season has started and have a decent game tonight.

*O’Brien: As for the CP3 fantasy…I think the only way to steal him would be @ the trade deadline. Sorry, I had intended to mention that before. N.O. would get immediate sal. relief in Joe’s exp. contract.
Teague would have to be part of any deal, one would think. I agree this is an odd time to be talking trade but Sekou planted the seed. And Yes, we would still need a 5 wi. a def. prescence. *On another note about “Paul” he is considered an outstanding defender with good #’s in both steals & rebounds.

I get so tired of reading the comments of fair weather fans on this blog. The team lost to the world champions, and some of you guys act as if they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks or Clippers. Penetrating the lane against Boston, LA, and Orlando is tough to do when you’re not doing it by design. You have Bynum and Odom (who is great at drawing charges) babysitting the front of the rim. Not too many players can just go to the lane one against 2-3 guys without drawing a charge or committing a turnover. Josh may have made some mistakes, as well as Horford. But the problems with this lost weight heaviest on the side of the coaching staff. The coaching staff didn’t do a good enough job of creating mismatches in favor of the Hawks offensive game plan (that sounds redundant doesn’t it, lol). I truly wish there were more backdoor screens being ran. I would love to see this team with a variation of the Princeton offense.
If you could trade coaches, I would trade Mike Woodson for Rick Adelman in a split second. His team lacks the all star player now, yet they’re still a threat to win every night because of the movement that happens away from the ball. The biggest free agent acquisition will not be Joe or any other player. It will be someone on the coaching staff who creates movements. Teams get to rest defensively against the Hawks. Actually the Hawks play like we used to play in the park. This style of play is ok to beat the lower rank teams because of the athleticism of the Hawks. But it will get crushed every single time when playing any team in the championship contender circle.

I don’t mind losing to the Lakers but when you go up against a front court that has more skill the best thing you can do is play smash mouth basketball. Collins and ZaZa should have used up their fouls with one thing in mind. Let them get their points at the free throw line. Send them home with bumps and bruises. Be willing to give up a few fast break points because the entire team is crashing the boards
There ought to be a team rule. No jumper for anyone unless they have made a foul shot first. This would mean attacking the rim. We may not be as good as the Lakers but we can certainly be more aggressive and more physical.

The Hawks really need a new coach. So many of the problems could be corected with good coaching and toughness.
Zaza should be playing a rebounding enforcer role. Trying to get O out of him is bad entertainment.
I think Smoove would stat inside if the ball ever came in there. Our guards don’t create movement and the big guys don’t get touches. No one but JJ and Bibby get off because they won’t consistently run a balanced O.
Of course, all of this is coaching.

Could you elaborate. Which mismatches do the Hawks have? Seeing that the hawk are a team of average players and one 2nd tier all star It occurs to most people that Woodson has done an out standing Job.
So what mis matches to we have. When I match the World Champions starting five with Our starting Five Im not seeing any mismatches.
Your comment “that sounds redundant doesn’t it, lol” Well to me the only thing that sounds redundant is the naggy whinny whimpering you do when you and Ken/grandad, level hate at Woodson with out justification.

Id like to talk about Woodson, hes been here 5 years and hasnt won a championship with all that talent we have. I think we should fire him immediately. A team with this much talent should be in the finals every year.Woodson is holding this team back. If Ken Strickland, Bob Weiss or OJ Simpson was the coach wed have our title. Ive talked with OJ, and If I can come up with some bail money (I’m looking for donors), he has assured me that he is willing to take the job. I see this has turned into the fantasy league with all of these trade proposals and suggestions that we immediately breakup the team to acquire one player.
JEJE-you have got to be one of the most negative minded individuals on these blogs, because you seem to see and focus on the worst in everything. You made the following statement: “I AM NOT BEING A KNEE-JERK REACTOR”. Well, judging from that disclaimer, you certain realize you’re starting to sound like one. In your defense however, you certainly have plenty of company.
Isn’t it odd how those who are predicting doom and gloom after an 8pt loss to the Lakers in LA, seem to forget how we got blown out by the Lakers last yr and still managed to win 47gms, the 4th seed, and advance to the 2nd rd of the playoffs. I believe Marvin, Josh and Horford were a part of all that as well.
I keep hearing this same sad and sorry excuse being used about Horford being undersized and not being a true center, whatever that’s supposed to mean. In our 1st 3gms Horford has gone up against three 7′ centers.(Horfords stats are in parenthesis)
(1) ABynum 7′0″ 285lbs. 21pts(10) 3rbs(9) 2blks(1)
(2) RHibbert 7′2″ 278lbs. 6pts(24) 9rbs(16) 1blk(2)
(3) BHeywood 7′0″ 263lbs. 19pts(10) 9rbs(12) 2blks(5)
HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU EXPLAIN A SO CALLED UNDERSIZED CENTER, THAT’S SUPPOSEDLY A NATURAL PF THAT’S PLAYING OUT OF POSITION, OUTREBOUNDING ALL THREE 7 FOOTERS AND HAVING MORE BLOCKS? Maybe the only thing that’s undersized is the appreciation and understanding, from those using that as an excuse, for how good a center he actually is.

Theres only one bonafied center amongst your group the other two are scrubbs who combined for 25pts,18 rbs, and 3 blks. Not bad for a pair who will go back to oblivion after your blog. Horford is a nice man and a decent hard working power forward, playing center.

Much like the Laker game, the Hawks are hanging in this game because of free throw shooting. They are not rebounding any better than Portland and they are shooting pretty poorly, but being aggressive has kept them in the game. Of course, we all know what happened in the 3rd quarter of that game, but hopefully they can maintain their aggressiveness in this 3rd quarter and keep this thing close until the end.

SEKOU-I’ve been complaining about us needing to run and become an uptempo team for the last 2+yrs. Woodson just isn’t a gametime or thinking coach. He doesn’t recognize matchup advantages or disadvantages, therefore he doesn’t make gametime changes or adjustments.
He seems to get involved in the gm more as a spectator than as a HC. You put Smoove and Horford on the move up and down the court and Oden, Aldridge and Pryzbilla will all be at a disadvantage.

Horford needs to start getting a little more aggressive on offense. Bibby drove inside on that last possession and left Horford with the ball about two feet from the hoop, and Horford kicked it out instead of taking a simple turnaround hook, leaving Joe with a tough shot. I know his post moves are not yet there (they need to develop pretty soon) but he’s not going to get better unless he takes those shots.

If the Hawks really do go as Josh goes, it’s because of things like that. The only time the Hawks push the tempo is when they force turnovers, and most of the time it’s Josh who is forcing these opportunities by blocking shots and getting in passing lanes.

Undisputed, do you not think having Crawford at point wouldn’t have created a mismatch on pick and rolls? The Lakers are good but as a team they’re not quick enough to guard a constantly moving team. If you don’t recall, that is why they struggled with Houston in the playoffs last season. Also, Bynum and Odom can not run the floor like Josh and Horford. If you don’t recall Sekou even had a nice article about how Josh and Horford dominated the Lakers last season. Every playoff team has a mismatch they can find, if the coach has an offensive mindset.

JJ with 45 min, Teague with no playing time after he did so well with his minutes last game… Great win but shades of last year. The starters will be zombies come playoff time. Fire Woodson already, he stuck to his “rotation” for grand total of 3 games before he went back to play Joe 40+ minutes to save my job. That dude took over the game. Straight up. No doubts about it. He ran the team. On the road. When we really needed it. Any more doubts?

It’s obvious that Jamal should start at the one or the two, and Marvin should come off the bench or retire. Crawford is our best pure scorer, and he allows Joe to be fresh at the end of games because he does not have to work so hard. Great game by Josh. Good win Hawks!!!!
JJ fresh at the end of games? Did JJ ever come out? Will he be tired tomorrow night? Great win tonight. Before we worry about Marvin – worry about Bibby – Marvin plays better D. I hope we start JT and Evans tomorrow night with Joe Smith – they should be rested.

Remember earlier in the gm when Bibby was in the gm and Portland doubled JJ whenever he touched the ball? They were particularly effective when they got him in the corner. With Crawford playing PG, how many double teams did you see them even come close to trying?
ALERT, ALERT!!! UNDERSIZED, NATURAL PF PLAYING OUT OF POSITION AHorford had another big night outrebounding another 7′ center. In fact he basically outperformed two 7 footers. (Horford’s stats in parenthesis)
ODEN 7′0″ 285lbs PTS 8 RBS 9 BLKS 0
PRYZBILLA 7′1″ 245lbs PTS 4 RBS 6 BLKS 2
TOTALS PTS 12(11) RBS 15(13) BLKS 2(1)
I read some of the feable attempts to use rebounding demons like CBarkley and DRodman to continue your justification for saying he’s undersized and playing out of position. Well, you obviously don’t have the sense to realize it, but you just proved my point and disproved yours. If you’re going to use Sir Charles(6′4″) and Rodman(6′8″) as examples of outstanding rebounders, THEN HOW IN THE HELL CAN HORFORD AT 6′10″ BE CONSIDERED UNDERSIZED?
Now, I expect some of you to counter with the fact both Barkley and Rodman played PF and not center, like Horford. Well, why didn’t you think of that before using them as examples to try and support your weak A&& position?

Kevin A,
It not the amount of minutes, it about how hard he has to work while he is out there. Tonight he was able to focus defensively on Roy in the 3rd quarter and then become aggressive at the end of the game. He did not have to work on both ends of the floor. Jamal took the offensive pressure off of him.

ROD FROM CP-I’ve never said Marvin was better than Granger, that’s an argument you created. I said Marvin could be just as effective overall as Granger if he was incorporated into the OFF structure like Granger and allowed to take as many shots. Marvin didn’t have a good OFF night overall, but played good DEF and tied JSmith with 7 rebounds. Against a tall Portland team, we needed what he provided on DEF and on the boards more than points. Because he’s such an outside scoring threat, he was able to pull his man away from the basket, which helped keep the lane open and allowed Crawford and JJ to consistently get inside lane.
THIS WAS A TOTAL TEAM WIN AS MUCH AS THE LAKER GM WAS A TOTAL TEAM LOSS.

“Outlaw chokes all the time he even choked once at the end of that game and Marvin has hit big shots before its amzaing how little yall remember”
I wasn’t talking about him making a big shot. I was talking about him sizing up his defender one-on-one, making a couple of moves, and shooting a jumpshot that went in. Creating offense for himself is something Marvin is still not comfortable doing.
Like I said, I’m not a Marvin hater, and there are things he does well. But that in particular is one of the most disappointing things about him and probably the main reason he hasn’t lived up to his draft status.

And besides we had a better winning percentage when we use evans as our starting SF last season. We should let marvin come off the bench and become the 2nd scoring option of the 2nd unit. i have a good feeling about this line up.

Its scary to see Joe Johnson with so many minutes already. Woody seems to have forgotten how worn out Joe was at the end of the season and in the playoffs last year. If he wants to blow it again with his mismanagement of the minutes, then he should ultimately pay the price. Several points: (this should make Sybil happy) Ken, although I agree with you about Big Al (rebounding), he is still not the defensive presense at the basket that might put us over the top. Listen carefully though, Al is the Hawk I enjoy watching most:
*great teammate
*brings “it” every night
*Rebounds
*exceptional on ball defender
*coachable
*heart
*winner
Most of that list was intangibles. Where we disagree is that I think he would be an all-star caliber 4. Currently as the team is constructed he is our best option to start @ the 5. Not to mention Zaza is super off the bench and a bargain at that.
Idiocy: Jamal absolutely benefits from playing beside Joe. One can also say that Joe benefits as well for the same reason.
JeJe: Really, come on, 5th best?
Samuel: I am most pleased to give Woody credit last evening. I/we could
pick apart his not playing Jeff T., his slow reaction to come out of the zone late, but he was the man who pushed the right buttons last night and I’m sure if I watched tape I could find some coaching gems.

The comments made after the loss to the Lakers weren’t about panicking, but rather they were observations that what has plagued the Hawks the last few seasons continues to do so now. They are maddeningly inconsistent, both players and coach. They don’t seem to address the mental lapses, uneven defensive efforts and boneheaded coaching moves. Most games that they lose present evidence of these problems.

Just watched the game. First of all, I would like to congratulate the Hawks and Woody on a big win. Get down double digits early, hang tough, and come through at the end. How many of these games did we lose last year? Good Job Hawks!
But I do have some comments:
1) Crawford is a baller! (Although he’s shooting 21% from 3)
2) Against the Lakers, Woody takes JJ out in the 1st quarter when he is hot, but leaves him in when he is cold? And JJ played 46 minutes tonight (averaging 37.8 mpg for the season). Plus we have 2 games back to back.
3) Where was Jeff Teague? Teague looked good against the Lakers in the 4th, but DNPCD.
4) Hawks need to run more. ‘Nique said it, Sekou said it, us fans say it all the time. Does Woody know it?
5) Wassup with Marvin? Season average: 9.3 pts, 5.5 rebs, 0.5 assists
That being said, Congrats to Woody and the Hawks. lets beat Sacramento tonight!

darrell starks,
I think the reason Woody brought Bibby in is because it gives them another big shot maker. With JJ, Crawford, and Bibby, thats 3 guys who can take and make big shots down the stretch.
If Crawford is at the 1, and JJ at the 2, who does Woody put in at 3? Marvin Williams? Mo Evans? I think Woody prefers to sacrifice Bibby’s defense for his offense.

The problem with some of you who say Jamal does not need to start, as long as he is in the game at the end is the fact that we notoriously start slow, and get down early because Joe has not warmed up, and no one else is capable of creating their own shot. Jamal no doubt should start.
Ken,
To continue to state that Marvin could do what Granger does in his offense, or to state that Marvin is a better fit for this team is what discredits any other statements that you make. If you are wrong, Man up and admit it. Marvin did not play great defense on any one yesterday. He got a block and rebounded well. Any 6′11 stiff could do that. Hell Sheldon Williams is averaging 6.6 rebounds per game this year. A #2 draft pick who the coach and GM told you before the season needs to step up this year that is averaging 9 points a game is a joke.

Samuel, go back and find where I said ANY of that about those players. You won’t find it, because I did NOT.
Here’s what I DID say: Shaq was not ever going to sign with us if he had the chance to go play with LeBron. Rasheed said (before anyone had made him an offer) that he wanted at least $8M / yr. I said that was WAY too much for the production he’s likely bring. Frye I said would be a decent pickup but not likely to make us any better than Joe Smith at twice or more Joe Smith’s salary.

Kudos to the Hawks on a victory against a very tough team; I called this a character building win because it was EARNED. Portland played well but lost it in the final minutes primarily because of our defense intangibles and unexpected rebound advantage. Crawford played extremely well and at a level that matched the hype that has been surrounding him. I’m giving a special Kudos to Zaza for also playing well after I had been very critical of his previous performance against the Lakers. Beyond his obvious physical limitation, I had forgotten about the intangibles Zaza brings that make him so special; his grit, determination and heart. I don’t apologize for my previous comments but I will give him credit in this game. It’s amazing how these aforementioned intangibles can overcome most limitations.
Something else after last night victory I had also forgotten about. Sund last year comment about emotional reactions from the Hawks wins and loses. He said it is best not to get TOO HIGH from a WIN or TOO LOW from a LOST as it a long season. As I have been reading some of these campaign-like bashing related comments about individual Hawk players, maybe we should all pause and embrace Sund’s wisdom. Making constructive criticism is one thing; but it is conflicting to HATE A HAWK PLAYER while claiming you LOVE THE TEAM. You know you have a conflict when:
1. Subconsciously your greatest joy is to witness the total demise of an individual Hawk player.
2. While the fans are down after a lost; you are overly excited to see how bad your hated player looks.
3. While the fans are excited after a win as the case last night; that’s peanuts compared to a particular poor play by your hated player.
4. Your greatest fear will be to witness an outstanding performance by your most hated player. It would be awkward and impossible for you to pay him a compliment.
As we get further into the season, these emotions will be harder and harder to hide. Ultimately you have to make a choice of what’s more important; Hawks victories or validation of a previous position.

I remember him saying he thought when Granger shot “he thinks its going in every time”. Personally, I still like Marv, 4 games is not a large enough sample to kick him to the curb. Should the Falcons bench/trade “Matty Ice” because of his last 3 games? Now, if we could use Marv as a chip at the tr.deadline to acquire JaVale McGee or someone with that sdkill set…I would be all for it. Right now Marv’s a Hawk, the TEAM is 3-1 enjoy.

GREAT WIN! last night, if they keep playing like this I might have to find the money for the NBA ticket!!!
Great job by Horford and Smoove rebounding and defending. Aldridge and Oden are beasts, but Horford and Smoove held their own. Crawford is who he is! a scoring machine! He’s a great fit for this team, you could really see how JJ and him can work well together.
I understand everyone’s issues with JJ playing so many minutes, but I don’t think it was as big a deal with this game because of the pace and he didn’t have to score as much. I would have liked to see Teague last night, but Woody was keeping Bibby on the floor because of his shooting. I hear everyone on Marvin, but I think he will be fine. He doesn’t need to score that much, just hit open shots, rebound and play defense. He missed some easy shots last night and didn’t play great defense but overall was satisfactory in my opinion. Marvin, just needs to get a little more confident in his shot and keep trying to get to the line.
Tonight can be a trap game, but I expect the HAWKS to play well. This will always be a big game for Bibby! Horford and Smoove have to play at a high level as usual but they won’t be challenged as much. Sacramento’s got a lot of young athletes and some good players off the bench. If the HAWKS play quality defense they should come out with a double digit win, but if they want to go up and down the floor with Sacramento it could be a tight game. This is a game that Marvin can have 20+ because the Kings will have to deal with Smoove inside and JJ outside. Bibby’s going to have to work hard though, Evans and Udrih are tough matchups for him.
GO HAWKS!!!

@ Sautee, that’s true, but that was a couple seasons ago. I’m not sure who else they had on that ORL roster, but as for us this season, I don’t see what Mo gives you that Marvin isn’t giving you right now. We lose our length/athleticism on the defensive & rebounding end & we allow teams to double Joe b/c they can play off Mo. Marvin might not look for his shot all the time, but he’s a hellavu lot more dangerous offensively than Mo is.
@ ILL, we’re a top 5 scoring team with Jamal coming off the bench so were not hurting for scoring points. Jamal gives us a great scoring punch off the bench & we need that from our 2nd unit. I don’t see what we gain by starting him.

Ree Roe,
Marvin coming off the bench is not all that bad considering he came off the bench in college to get such rave reviews to being a top draft pick!! Maybe Marvin would be more comfortable doing that since he wouldnt have to worry about feeding JJ the ball all the time..he needs to be that MAN on the floor for the 2nd unit!

Mz. Hawkdafied has a problem with the rotation and minutes last night. Somebody, anybody help me understand why a team with improved depth only plays 8 of the 13 players on it’s roster with one player logging 45 minutes? Call it nitpicking or whatever you want but an inquiring mind would like to know what’s the deal on the real folks.

Starting Mo would not hurt the team..He too have pretty good defense and he can shot the long ball!! And having Marvin in the 2nd unit with the other teams 2nd unit will keep us on top with points while still playing great defense on their player.

darrell something worked including bibby working to aggravate on defense. they didnt outscore us in the end, we made some stops so all must be included in the win including woody.
funny, i might agree with rod on this one, marvin might be more of a liability last night than bibby against the blazers during the waning moments or the other option mo evans. it worked out so give credit where it is due. save the detrimental remarks for when we lose. now if stackhouse were on the bench then maybe i would criticize not having him on the court, but sadly he is not.

All I’m saying is switch it up sometimes and just see what happens..cause leaving things as is really make Marvin look BAD!! Yeah his defense is good but everything else just looks plan ole sloppy. I truely believe if Doc Rivers were our coach, he would consider that and you would be surprise at the outcome..Mann, look how Shelden Williams look with them! Marvin or Moe
Marvin 6,9″ 245 Mo 6′5″ 220
Mo is to small to start for a team with an undersized front line. What needs to happen is Bibby and Marvin need to shoot better from the 3(atleast 40%).
Please stop blaming Marvin for being drafted 2nd…If he was drafted 18th, no one would be complaining. I think peoples anger over Chris Paul and Darren Williams clouds your objectivity. If we had the number 1# pick, Bogut would be a Hawk…Would you prefer Bogut?
These are the facts:
He has average 14pts a game as the fourth or fifth option.
He is a Good defender and who wants Joe guarding Lebron for 35 min a game.
He is a solid rebounder.
It is hard to ave 14pts a game in the NBA!!
Jamal is now the #2 scoring option..what do you think will happen to his points per game?
I agree he needs to shoot better, but he is 1st a rebounder and a defender.
Please Marvin haters, stop dreaming-up schemes to get Chris Paul and hope we re-sign Joe.

In reference to Crawford’s starting at point guard:
In addition to the argument(s) advanced above, the question of replacing Jamal’s scoring off of the bench has been raised. My response is as follows.
First, Bibby’s long range shooting skills and veteran savvy could be emploed to fill in the “scoring gap”. My preferred solution ,however, would be to have Marvin come off of the bench. I see that as a more conducive circumstance for his skill set and temperment. However, that solution might require some personnel moves that some including the current incumbant head coach are not comfortable with.
Maybe Jason Collins can get out of the doghouse and contribute to the resolution of this issue?

Sekou, you are blazing starting out the gates…your last the three blogs was a great prelude to the events that unfolded in the game. The Sacramento game should be more intriguing because the Hawks have also struggled coming off of big win and falling to one the bottom feeders of the league. Something this game should start to give us some clues.
Doc, Ditto on Crawford…like I said before…if you’re the Hawks…Crawford is just what the doctor ordered!
Yeah, its early in the season…but finally some help from the bench… GREAT TEAM PERFORMANCE BY THE HAWKS!!!

Good post by The Truth @ 10:43am. What most seem to forget is that it does not matter who starts but who finishes. As long as Crawford is getting between 25-32 minutes per game, he probably is OK with that. Coming off the bench as a ’sniper’ also allows him to examine the flow of the game before going in.

Ms.Dee I like Marvin in the starting line up personally. And I am one of those who thought he upped his D last season and also improved on his 3 point shot. I remember Marvin jump roping at the beginning of games to get his energy up. Perhaps that will help him come alive or awaken from his slumber. He was great in the preseason I don’t know what happened though. Anyhow I like the idea of Jamal coming off the bench being a scoring threat like Ginobli is for the Spurs and like Jason Terry was for the Mavericks. Looking forward to the game when J Craw drops fiddy on opponents whether he starts or comes in as the sixth man. It really doesn’t matter to me who starts and who comes off the bench as long as all players gets a chance to make their contribution to the team. I know only twelve get the opportunity each game night. Alll I ask is all thirteen get some action more frequently this season. Of course I’m no bball expert, just a fan who wants to see the team succeed. I was just hoping the team could see success with a deeper rotation.

How can you say this? Our starting lineup gets off to terrible starts every game. There’s no way Marvin should be starting on this team or any other NBA team. And people can say he’s in a slump, or that we have so many weapons, but he really is a lowly basketball player. I wouldn’t even say he’s a top 20 SF.
How can someone who is 6″9 (closer to 6″10) with a Scottie Pippen-looking wingspan, who looks athletic, and who went to UNC, be so mediocre?
Anyway, putting in Craw, Bibby, and Joe sounds sick but may be too many players who need the ball. Maybe move Smoove to the 3 and put Craw at the PG, or put Mo in with Joe and Craw

He can only guard one position, and can’t stop anybody that is an above average player. Did you see Joe on Roy in the second half yesterday? Did you see him check Granger in the second half of the Indiana game? Marvin’s only above average qualities are his FT shooting and his rebounding.

Jamal is perfect coming off the bench. I have seen this guy play many games as a Knick and he shows glimpses of greatness. He’s shaky on defense. Exactly. These Marvin supporters won’t realize that until we start getting down 10 to 15 points in the first quarter to the Boston and Orlando’s of the world and can’t come back. We have already gotten down big to 2 teams this year already, and had enough to fight our way back into the game. Boston and Orlando won’t let us back in.

Yes, I would prefer Bogut. I would prefer about 20 to 25 other small forwards in the league right now. Hell, I would prefer Stackhose and he is not even in the league. I would complain no matter where he was drafted because he is not and NBA level small forward. I have been complaining about him since we drafted him, so this is not new for me. Any guy who gets paid 7.5 million dollars to do a job, should be able to hit a wide open jumpshot or rebound the ball at 6′10. Remember he was not drafted to be our 5th option, and he was not compensated to be that either.

If marvin is such a bad defedner against above average players:
How did he hold Lebron to only 16 points during the time both were on the floor the last time they played before marvin’s back injury ,last march?
How did he hold carmelo to 16 on 4-17 shooting last decembre and outscore him while holding him to his season average in february?
Why did sekou call him our best defender against opposing wings in the story on his injury last march?
Why do you have all those posters of him on your wall and wank to images of him at night? Its clear thats what you do because thats what people as obsesed as you are do. No one else talks so much about a player as yuo do about marvin so whats up with that?

Rod from College Park,
Get off Marvin’s sacs, He is the 4th maybe 5th option on this team….your horrible head coach refuses to call plays for him…if he got the touches he would easily average 20 every night because he can shoot, and he gets to the line and hits his free throws…..He also is a good defender…Some SF’s like Granger, Pierce, Durant, Melo and Lebron are going to score regardless of who is guarding them because they are the focal point of their offense unlike Marvin…the only thing holding the hawks back is Woodson and a legit 6′10 or taller big man, but hell if we got one woodson probaly wouldnt play him any way…
The bottom line is
Rod quit hating on Marvin, u act like he hit your girl or something…on this team he will never average avg 20 or more

Don’t we switch on defense? Maybe Lebron had a bad game. He still scored over his season average that game. Maybe Carmelo had a bad game. One or two games make you a good defender? Jeje, do you ever watch Track and Field? When you are running a relay, you don’t have to put your best out first. You realize that if you stay in striking distance with this lineup while the opposition is using their best, then you always have more options to go to. If Crawford was starting at the 2 guard, he would be forced to slow down his tempo which would benefit the opposition more so than the Hawks. Very rarely in the first 10 minutes of an NBA game, do you see teams getting up and down the floor. Having Teague and Crawford come off the bench, leaves the Hawks with another gear in reserve that they can use. If it was Williams coming off the bench as the sixth man, what difference would he bring to the game? What kind of spark off the bench would Williams bring? As many have said, Ginobli was a better scorer than Bowens. Bobby Jackson was even better at penetrating than Bibby was in Sac. Kukoc could’ve played the starting three, with Pippen taking Harper’s position. But strategically, that would hurt you more than help you. You don’t neutralize your own advantage. How many second units can score with Crawford? Its not about the starters outscoring the other team’s starters. its about the Hawks (collectively) outscoring the other team. Last night’s game was a great chance to see what difference it makes. Also you have to realize Marvin is in a slump, just like Artest, Nelson, Baron Davis, Maggette, and many more players who you know will figure out whats wrong.
Now that aside, I will say that I would trade Marvin for Jeff Green in a second lol.

Mychelfromatl,
I’m assuming you are a woman so I will be nice about this. We don’t do SON in the south. Take that back to New York. Do some hip-hop research. You hate on someone when you dislike him or her for no reason or you are jealous of him or her. I have a reason to dislike Marvin’s game, and I damn sure am not jealous of him. I would never want to be in a situation or on a team where no one respects me at my job or in my industry but some non-informed bloggers. You should have used SEEN not SAW. Yes I would take 20 forwards in the league besides Marvin and my point was made last year and has been proven so far this year. Stackhouse would give us more at the 3 now than Marvin has this year, and he actually was a better player than Marvin for his whole career. I have done pretty well for myself, so I have come to terms with not being in the NBA. Yes I am mad because Marvin is making the team that I support worse than they should be. If you have ever lived anywhere besides Atlanta, you will know that this is what real fans do. You should not have to wait 6 years for a #2 pick to step up and be a real NBA player. Any other real basketball city, Marvin would be getting drinks thrown on him after the game. While you would not understand this, Marvin simply need to have some nuts and step his game up. Sorry that I disturb you so much, but deal with it or go to another blog with all the Marvin lovers. That was as nice as I can possibly be.

Hope Hawks take confidence in beating Portland at home, especially after the Lakers debacle. I expect Hawks to beat Sac-Town and Charlotte. No better way to improve your road records than beating teams you should beat. Go Hawks, Go!
Amazing how much energy folks expending hating on Marvin. I am quite aware of Marvin’s shortcomings, but he is a Hawk, and as true fans, our job is to support whatever product management puts on the floor, good or bad. And I will say this again. No matter how much we hate or whine about Marvin’s contributions or lack off, we have no power to do anything about it. We can hate and blog negative stuff until we are blue in the face, MW is still a Hawk with a long term contract. So assuming ASG keeps him, are we really gonna spend the next 4 years lamenting about him? Wish you luck on that one. Even in a win, Hawks fans still have something to gripe about. Can’t wait till tonight, so we can see Marvin stumble, fall on his ass, and lose his handle again!
And about Teague, can we just take a chill pill? DNP in a game and we all assume he is in Woody’s doghouse. Woody wanted to win that game, and felt more comfortable playing his vets. Look for Jeff to get his minutes tonight.

A better question would be: How many SFs trip up and fall on 90% of their drives to hole, and cant finish on the other 10%?
maybe I’m not as hard on Marvin as Rod, but I believe he’s a back up at best, especially on a playoff team like the Hawks. He doesn’t deserve as many minutes as he gets.
In other words…you’re asking how many SFs can do a better job than Marvin….you dont have to look that far away. It’s the guy backing him up, Mo Evans. He flows better on offense with the hawks and also plays quality Defense.

Now, if Teague doesnt play tonight, thats a different story.
Since JJ played 46 minutes last night, I hope Woody does a good job of resting him early, so JJ can finish strong in the 4Q.

Mac-Town,
about this: “How many SFs trip up and fall on 90% of their drives to hole, and cant finish on the other 10%?”
Since I called out Rod for saying Marvin fell 60% of the time, I’ll HAVE to call hyperbole on you for this. You say it as if it’s a fact, when it obviously is NOT.
If it SEEMS like that, and THAT’S what you say, ok. But don’t state it as a fact, ’cause you KNOW it’s gross exaggeration. Keep it real if you care about having credibility in this room.
Yes, I admit he falls often. But nowhere NEAR your exaggerated figure.
As Keyshawn says “C’mon Maaan”.

terrell barron,
This is the statement that was made by Rufus1
“If you go down the list of players who have average 13-15 per game, most of them are the #1 or #2 option on there teams and they make atleast 8mil(except the new players).”
Notice the #1 or #2 option and the “at least” 8 million. I simply disproved his point.
Huh!,
Tayshaun Prince and Marvin do have very similar career averages, but Tayshaun is a 3 or 4 time all defensive selection. That award is usually voted on by the coaches in the league, and does hold some weight in my book. He also was asked to guard the other teams best scorer at the 2 or the 3 man to man most of the time and Marvin could never do that. Tayshaun also was an integral part in his team winning a championship. He has career playoff averages of 12.5ppg and 5.6 RPG compared to Marvin at 8.5ppg and 2 RPG. He also was not drafted #2 in the draft, can drive to the basket without falling, can actually handle the ball and is a much more fluent player in my opinion. No comparison of the two players is valid. I would venture to say that most gm’s in the league would take Tayshaun over Marvin including our present and former gm all things being equal.

Sautee,
He might actually be close to 90% this year for real. I might have to do my research on that one. I have all the games TIVO’d. Get back at you on that.

How did you disprove my point?
The list I gave you is a list players making more than 8mil..average between 13-15pts. Those are the players off the top of my head. There are atlest 20 and maybe 30.
Perfect example-TREVOR ARIZA
With the laker he averaged 8pts a game…Now as the #1 scoring option in Houston he averages 18-20pts. Amazing how being the #1 option effects your points.
Ron Artest averaged 20pts in Houston…With the Lakers 12pts. Amazing how being the #1 option effects your points.
Just a thought.
How many points would Ariza average in Atlanta? HHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMM
Just another thought.

Portland played well but lost it in the final minutes primarily because of our defense intangibles and unexpected rebound advantage.

darrell:
Doc im sorry but woody almost blew the game, why in the world would you bring in bibby with 4min left to guard andre miller and move jamal 2 small forward 2 guard 6′9 travis outlaw, that was dum when the hawks was playing great defense with jamal at point.
nire:
I can’t believe I’m gonna say this…but I agree with darrell
HUH?
truth, it also goes for guys who treat the coach the same way.

ROD FROM CP-I appreciate your reverence for Granger and your desire to have him in the Hawks starting lineup instead of Marvin. However, this is not a FANTASY LEAGUE BASKETBALL blogs, although there are a lot of bloggers that seem to think so. No matter how much you bash and degrade Marvin, Atlanta Hawks GM Rick Sund IS NOT GOING TO TRADE MARVIN FOR GRANGER, not matter how much better he is, or you think he is.
So why don’t you spend more time focusing on the Hawks as a team and less on Marvin as a player. BECOME A TEAM SUPPORTER INSTEAD OF A PLAYER HATER.
