Pump your brakes

LaMarcus Aldridge will get a chance to get after Josh Smith (hand reaching for the ball) and the Hawks tonight at the Rose Garden. A knee injury won't keep him on the sideline (and major props to my man Salim Stoudamire - corner right - who is one of Portland's All-Time finest).

PORTLAND – Pump your brakes.

I’ll do it if you do it.

Because it appears we’ve gone a bit overboard with the panic room act after the Hawks’ loss Sunday in Los Angeles to the Lakers.

More than a couple Hawks reminded me before, during and after practice Monday that we’re still in the first, five-game stint of the season. We’re just three games in, with Game 4 up tonight against a strong Trail Blazers team at the Rose Garden.

“People had us winning the championship last year when we got off to that 6-0 start,” Hawks captain and All-Star Joe Johnson said and then laughed. “Everybody needs to calm down and just keep working. It’s a long season, man. Every coach I’ve ever had tells you that [the season] is a marathon and not a sprint. And that’s true. Don’t get me wrong, you’ve got to play with urgency. But you also have to keep the season in perspective.”

Perspective is something that would come in handy around here, for me and for you.

I’m not in the habit of predicting disasters but I can admit to having a bad feeling about that Lakers game. I knew they’d be hungry to make a point after losing at home the Mavericks a couple nights earlier. And I know the Hawks have a penchant for not fully understanding what it is to be focused, locked and loaded on the road.

JJ erased any fears I had with his outlandish first quarter performance against the Lakers. After he lit Kobe Bryant up for 18 points in nine minutes I started crafting my “Hawks finally show claws at Staples” story. Then the third quarter came along and I hit the delete button.

This game against the Blazers presents a similarly tough challenge; my guess is road teams won’t find this venue much easier to deal with this season than they do Staples Center. It also provides the Hawks with a chance for a little Rip City redemption. Find a way to outwork the Blazers and their All-Star (Brandon Roy)-led crew and maybe we can put file that Lakers debacle away for nit-picking at a later date.

CLOSE TO HOME

For Seattle natives like Jamal Crawford and Marvin Williams, the annual trip here to Portland is closest they’ll get to home. Since the Sonics packed up shop and moved to Oklahoma City (and were renamed the Thunder), there’s been a huge void in the road schedule for teams used to doing the Pacific Northwest two-step between this city and it’s neighbor to the north.

For guys who grew up immersed in the NBA culture that that Sonics provided that void is even more pronounced.

“You grow up your whole life dreaming about making the league and playing for the Sonics,” Williams said. “I was lucky enough to make it and play in Seattle before they [left town]. But it’s brutal, not having them anymore. It still stings for a lot of people and probably always will.”

Marvin’s career-high remains the 33 points he dropped on his hometown team Jan. 25, 2008. In fact, he’s always played well when the Hawks travel to this northwest corridor of the country. Maybe it’s all the family and friends that come to see him. Or maybe it’s just being in familiar territory that gets him going. Whatever it is, don’t be surprised to see both Marvin and Jamal go off tonight against the Blazers.

GOOD JOSH, BAD JOSH

There’s a funny, or not so funny depending on your perspective, debate that happens on press row shortly after the start of most Hawks games about which Josh Smith is in the building.

Is it good Josh (the one averaged 18.5 points and led the Hawks in assists by attacking the paint in the first two games of this season) or bad Josh (the one that showed up for that Lakers game and rarely ventured inside on offense and remained largely ineffective for all but a few minutes)?

The Hawks need good Josh to show up against the Trail Blazers tonight. They need the active Josh, the one that played superbly at home in wins over both the Pacers and Wizards to start the season. They need the Josh that changes games with his defensive presence and triggers and finishes fast breaks like few players in the league can.

What they don’t need is the Josh that spends more time complaining to the referees than he does chasing rebounds and loose balls. They don’t need the Josh that refuses to dive to the basket when JJ has the ball on the wing and is being double teamed and needs a safety valve.

I’ve debated with numerous folks – scouts, agents, executives, other players and just about anyone else you can imagine – this notion that the Hawks go as he Josh goes. I’ve never really bought into that premise. But I’m starting to see the light. When he’s at his best, the Hawks are literally at their best. And when he’s not … you saw the Lakers game.

ALDRIDGE TO PLAY?

The status of Trail Blazers big man LaMarcus Aldridge is no longer uncertain for tonight’s game. The knee injury he suffered during Sunday’s win over Oklahoma City is not expected keep him out of the game, per the Oregonian.

Aldridge has given the Hawks major fits here – averaging 20.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in Portland’s last two games against the Hawks here.

ONE LAST THING

I ran across this link that is required reading from Yahoo! Sports columnist Adrian Wojnarowski. Woj attacks the simmering issue that is Chris Paul’s plight in New Orleans. It’s good stuff. Take a break from work, my treat, and read it. You’ll be glad you did.

Sekou, I’m assuming you are on the road with the team (sorry if you mentioned that earlier). How are the new guys blending in? It may be too early to tell but this is an important part of developing chemistry. Maybe you could give us an article about what their off days are like on the road, when you don’t have a major topic to cover.

Ms.Dee I like Marvin in the starting line up personally. And I am one of those who thought he upped his D last season and also improved on his 3 point shot. I remember Marvin jump roping at the beginning of games to get his energy up. Perhaps that will help him come alive or awaken from his slumber. He was great in the preseason I don’t know what happened though. Anyhow I like the idea of Jamal coming off the bench being a scoring threat like Ginobli is for the Spurs and like Jason Terry was for the Mavericks. Looking forward to the game when J Craw drops fiddy on opponents whether he starts or comes in as the sixth man. It really doesn’t matter to me who starts and who comes off the bench as long as all players gets a chance to make their contribution to the team. I know only twelve get the opportunity each game night. Alll I ask is all thirteen get some action more frequently this season. Of course I’m no bball expert, just a fan who wants to see the team succeed. I was just hoping the team could see success with a deeper rotation.

“Jamal off the bench is perfect. No way you change that up”

How can you say this? Our starting lineup gets off to terrible starts every game. There’s no way Marvin should be starting on this team or any other NBA team. And people can say he’s in a slump, or that we have so many weapons, but he really is a lowly basketball player. I wouldn’t even say he’s a top 20 SF.

How can someone who is 6″9 (closer to 6″10) with a Scottie Pippen-looking wingspan, who looks athletic, and who went to UNC, be so mediocre?

Anyway, putting in Craw, Bibby, and Joe sounds sick but may be too many players who need the ball. Maybe move Smoove to the 3 and put Craw at the PG, or put Mo in with Joe and Craw

“Rod from college park i no you going 2 hate me for this but marvin is our best defender at the 3 beside josh, unless we starte josh at the 3.
GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!”

I don’t hate you, but I do realize that you are incorrect. Our best defender besides Josh at the 3 would be Joe. Marvin is not I good defender, I don’t know where that information coems from. He can only guard one position, and can’t stop anybody that is an above average player. Did you see Joe on Roy in the second half yesterday? Did you see him check Granger in the second half of the Indiana game? Marvin’s only above average qualities are his FT shooting and his rebounding.

Rod from College Park does not free throw shooting and rebounding help win games? I recall a few games last season where missed free throws cost the Hawks the game and being outrebounded too.

Jamal is perfect coming off the bench. I have seen this guy play many games as a Knick and he shows glimpses of greatness. He’s shaky on defense. That being said, from listening to his interviews, he casually throws out that “they” say he should be a starter or he would rather be a starter. I wonder how long he really will be contempt with coming off the bench. Just a thought.

Exactly. These Marvin supporters won’t realize that until we start getting down 10 to 15 points in the first quarter to the Boston and Orlando’s of the world and can’t come back. We have already gotten down big to 2 teams this year already, and had enough to fight our way back into the game. Boston and Orlando won’t let us back in.

Rufus,

“Please stop blaming Marvin for being drafted 2nd…If he was drafted 18th, no one would be complaining. I think peoples anger over Chris Paul and Darren Williams clouds your objectivity. If we had the number 1# pick, Bogut would be a Hawk…Would you prefer Bogut?

Yes, I would prefer Bogut. I would prefer about 20 to 25 other small forwards in the league right now. Hell, I would prefer Stackhose and he is not even in the league. I would complain no matter where he was drafted because he is not and NBA level small forward. I have been complaining about him since we drafted him, so this is not new for me. Any guy who gets paid 7.5 million dollars to do a job, should be able to hit a wide open jumpshot or rebound the ball at 6′10. Remember he was not drafted to be our 5th option, and he was not compensated to be that either.

If marvin is such a bad defedner against above average players:

How did he hold Lebron to only 16 points during the time both were on the floor the last time they played before marvin’s back injury ,last march?

How did he hold carmelo to 16 on 4-17 shooting last decembre and outscore him while holding him to his season average in february?

Why did sekou call him our best defender against opposing wings in the story on his injury last march?

Why do you have all those posters of him on your wall and wank to images of him at night? Its clear thats what you do because thats what people as obsesed as you are do. No one else talks so much about a player as yuo do about marvin so whats up with that?

Rod from College Park,

Get off Marvin’s sacs, He is the 4th maybe 5th option on this team….your horrible head coach refuses to call plays for him…if he got the touches he would easily average 20 every night because he can shoot, and he gets to the line and hits his free throws…..He also is a good defender…Some SF’s like Granger, Pierce, Durant, Melo and Lebron are going to score regardless of who is guarding them because they are the focal point of their offense unlike Marvin…the only thing holding the hawks back is Woodson and a legit 6′10 or taller big man, but hell if we got one woodson probaly wouldnt play him any way…
The bottom line is

Rod quit hating on Marvin, u act like he hit your girl or something…on this team he will never average avg 20 or more

Jeje, do you ever watch Track and Field? When you are running a relay, you don’t have to put your best out first. You realize that if you stay in striking distance with this lineup while the opposition is using their best, then you always have more options to go to. If Crawford was starting at the 2 guard, he would be forced to slow down his tempo which would benefit the opposition more so than the Hawks. Very rarely in the first 10 minutes of an NBA game, do you see teams getting up and down the floor. Having Teague and Crawford come off the bench, leaves the Hawks with another gear in reserve that they can use. If it was Williams coming off the bench as the sixth man, what difference would he bring to the game? What kind of spark off the bench would Williams bring? As many have said, Ginobli was a better scorer than Bowens. Bobby Jackson was even better at penetrating than Bibby was in Sac. Kukoc could’ve played the starting three, with Pippen taking Harper’s position. But strategically, that would hurt you more than help you. You don’t neutralize your own advantage. How many second units can score with Crawford? Its not about the starters outscoring the other team’s starters. its about the Hawks (collectively) outscoring the other team. Last night’s game was a great chance to see what difference it makes. Also you have to realize Marvin is in a slump, just like Artest, Nelson, Baron Davis, Maggette, and many more players who you know will figure out whats wrong.

Now that aside, I will say that I would trade Marvin for Jeff Green in a second lol.

Mychelfromatl,

I’m assuming you are a woman so I will be nice about this. We don’t do SON in the south. Take that back to New York. Do some hip-hop research. You hate on someone when you dislike him or her for no reason or you are jealous of him or her. I have a reason to dislike Marvin’s game, and I damn sure am not jealous of him. I would never want to be in a situation or on a team where no one respects me at my job or in my industry but some non-informed bloggers. You should have used SEEN not SAW. Yes I would take 20 forwards in the league besides Marvin and my point was made last year and has been proven so far this year. Stackhouse would give us more at the 3 now than Marvin has this year, and he actually was a better player than Marvin for his whole career. I have done pretty well for myself, so I have come to terms with not being in the NBA. Yes I am mad because Marvin is making the team that I support worse than they should be. If you have ever lived anywhere besides Atlanta, you will know that this is what real fans do. You should not have to wait 6 years for a #2 pick to step up and be a real NBA player. Any other real basketball city, Marvin would be getting drinks thrown on him after the game. While you would not understand this, Marvin simply need to have some nuts and step his game up. Sorry that I disturb you so much, but deal with it or go to another blog with all the Marvin lovers. That was as nice as I can possibly be.

Great road win last night againts a quality team. Jamal did what he was brought here to do: Score and make plays. Hope Hawks take confidence in beating Portland at home, especially after the Lakers debacle. I expect Hawks to beat Sac-Town and Charlotte. No better way to improve your road records than beating teams you should beat. Go Hawks, Go!

Amazing how much energy folks expending hating on Marvin. I am quite aware of Marvin’s shortcomings, but he is a Hawk, and as true fans, our job is to support whatever product management puts on the floor, good or bad. And I will say this again. No matter how much we hate or whine about Marvin’s contributions or lack off, we have no power to do anything about it. We can hate and blog negative stuff until we are blue in the face, MW is still a Hawk with a long term contract. So assuming ASG keeps him, are we really gonna spend the next 4 years lamenting about him? Wish you luck on that one. Even in a win, Hawks fans still have something to gripe about. Can’t wait till tonight, so we can see Marvin stumble, fall on his ass, and lose his handle again!

And about Teague, can we just take a chill pill? DNP in a game and we all assume he is in Woody’s doghouse. Woody wanted to win that game, and felt more comfortable playing his vets. Look for Jeff to get his minutes tonight.

A better question would be: How many SFs trip up and fall on 90% of their drives to hole, and cant finish on the other 10%?

maybe I’m not as hard on Marvin as Rod, but I believe he’s a back up at best, especially on a playoff team like the Hawks. He doesn’t deserve as many minutes as he gets.

In other words…you’re asking how many SFs can do a better job than Marvin….you dont have to look that far away. It’s the guy backing him up, Mo Evans. He flows better on offense with the hawks and also plays quality Defense.

If it SEEMS like that, and THAT’S what you say, ok. But don’t state it as a fact, ’cause you KNOW it’s gross exaggeration. Keep it real if you care about having credibility in this room.

“If you go down the list of players who have average 13-15 per game, most of them are the #1 or #2 option on there teams and they make atleast 8mil(except the new players).”

Notice the #1 or #2 option and the “at least” 8 million. I simply disproved his point.

Huh!,

Tayshaun Prince and Marvin do have very similar career averages, but Tayshaun is a 3 or 4 time all defensive selection. That award is usually voted on by the coaches in the league, and does hold some weight in my book. He also was asked to guard the other teams best scorer at the 2 or the 3 man to man most of the time and Marvin could never do that. Tayshaun also was an integral part in his team winning a championship. He has career playoff averages of 12.5ppg and 5.6 RPG compared to Marvin at 8.5ppg and 2 RPG. He also was not drafted #2 in the draft, can drive to the basket without falling, can actually handle the ball and is a much more fluent player in my opinion. No comparison of the two players is valid. I would venture to say that most gm’s in the league would take Tayshaun over Marvin including our present and former gm all things being equal.

With the laker he averaged 8pts a game…Now as the #1 scoring option in Houston he averages 18-20pts. Amazing how being the #1 option effects your points.

Ron Artest averaged 20pts in Houston…With the Lakers 12pts. Amazing how being the #1 option effects your points.

Just a thought.

How many points would Ariza average in Atlanta? HHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMM

Just another thought.

truth:
Portland played well but lost it in the final minutes primarily because of our defense intangibles and unexpected rebound advantage.

darrell:
Doc im sorry but woody almost blew the game, why in the world would you bring in bibby with 4min left to guard andre miller and move jamal 2 small forward 2 guard 6′9 travis outlaw, that was dum when the hawks was playing great defense with jamal at point.
nire:
I can’t believe I’m gonna say this…but I agree with darrell

HUH?

truth, it also goes for guys who treat the coach the same way.

ROD FROM CP-I appreciate your reverence for Granger and your desire to have him in the Hawks starting lineup instead of Marvin. However, this is not a FANTASY LEAGUE BASKETBALL blogs, although there are a lot of bloggers that seem to think so. No matter how much you bash and degrade Marvin, Atlanta Hawks GM Rick Sund IS NOT GOING TO TRADE MARVIN FOR GRANGER, not matter how much better he is, or you think he is.

So why don’t you spend more time focusing on the Hawks as a team and less on Marvin as a player. BECOME A TEAM SUPPORTER INSTEAD OF A PLAYER HATER.
