Jamal Crawford and Hawks coach Mike Woodson are on the same page now after a brief meeting of the minds after Crawford played just 12 minutes in the season opener.
HAWKSVILLE – Jamal Crawford was understandably a bit confused about his role as the Hawks’ sixth man after playing just 12 minutes in the season opener.
A prolific scorer sitting on the bench for most of a track meet that ended in a 120-109 win for the Hawks didn’t make much sense to anyone else either, including Hawks coach Mike Woodson.
So he did what any reasonable people manager would do, he called Crawford into his office Thursday (well before tonight’s game against Gilbert Arenas and the Wizards of Washington at Philips Arena) and dispensed a few words of wisdom.
“I had to let him know that he is a big part of what we’re doing here,” Woodson said. “I can’t sit here and say, ‘Jamal I’m going to give you 35 minutes a game.’ But I have to make him more a part of what we’re doing, without a doubt. Because he has a position on this team where he can score the ball for us and be a big threat and take some of the pressure off of Joe [Johnson] and Mike [Bibby], Marvin [Williams], Josh [Smith] and Al [Horford]. He is coming off the bench and you need guys coming off the bench to score the ball. I’ve got to help him and put him in positions where he can be successful and help us win games.”
I asked someone to translate that from coach speak for me and apparently it means Woodson reminded Crawford that he’s a scorer first and foremost and not to lose that mentality, even when he comes off the bench. Crawford has shown off spectacular passing skills throughout the preseason and even in the opener. But the Hawks need him to do what comes naturally, and that’s score at will.
That sounds like a reasonable plan to me, especially with Arenas and the high-scoring Wizards in town.

Good stuff. He did look a bit timid on Wednesday.
LET’S SEE THE SHAKE-N-BAKE.
WOODY, LET BIBBY REDUCE HIS MINUTES TONIGHT. WE NEED THE VET TO PLAY SUNDAY VS. THE LAKERS. LET TEAGUE AND CRAW GET THEIR MINUTES ON ARENAS. WE HAVE TOO SLOW A STARTING BKCOURT TO CONTAIN HIM.

Didn’t Crawford say something about Woody telling him to score in the preseason, but Craw thinks he’s more than just that and kinda ignored Woody? Sekou, do you know what I’m referring to?

Coach Woodson sounds like all talk to me. I don’t mean that in a negative manner either. I think he’s saying the right things, as far as using his bench more, but when it comes down to it–IE in a game situation – he’s just more comfortable w/ his starters. It’s just the second game though so hopefully we’ll see him use the bench a lot more in the future(starting tonight), also on this upcoming road trip w/ a few back to backs.

It’s become apparent that no matter how well the bench does, Woodson will keep our same starting lineup in the last 80 % of every 4th qtr. What’s his damn obsession with having Marvin in? The guy is an average stiff. Why have we had the same starting lineup the last 3 years? Make a change and put Crawford in the starting lineup

Woody has said a lot of things in the past that he has not followed through on. He also told Crawford that he wants him to lead the league in scoring off the bench. Lets hope he gets it right, because Crawford is a scorer, and he needs minutes. Plus, like Woody says, it takes pressure off JJ, and should allow Woody to cut JJ’s minutes down to 35 or so.
I posted this on the other blog, so I wanted to repost it here.
Ray,
I agree. Marvin needs to step up defensively. With the players we have on this team (JJ, Bibby, Josh, Crawford), with Woody’s system (and Marvin’s lack of aggressiveness), Marvin is never going to develop into an elite scorer. What I would like to see him do is hang his hat on defense. I’m not saying he will be Artest like, but I would like to see him take the next step defensively (because I dont think he will take the next step offensively).
As Rod would say, there are quite a few SF who are better than Marvin (LeBron, Carmelo, Granger, Gerald Wallace, Caron Butler, Paul Pierce, Richard Jefferson just to name a few). So Marvin needs to have a mindset that says “You know what, I might only score 14 ppg, but my guy will not score more than 14 either”.

Not much you can do in 12 minutes but Woody panics when his team is not winning and messes up his rotation..Which means he still doesn’t trust his bench. You have to be cool and temperamental during the game and just encourage the guys. Don’t always panic and change your game plan when things start slow or don’t go your way. I support the Hawks but I have never been a fan of Woody as a coach.

Woody is no coach. Only in title. He doesn’t coach anything. He’s terrible. The players win in spite of him. The Hawks have a nice roster and have a lot of talent and cohesive pieces. Jamal will be a valuable cog in Woody’s favorite play….One on one at the top starring Joe Johnson(with Jamal possibly getting in on that with his one on one skills).

I personally like that Crawford says he’d rather get 10 assists off the bench than lead the league in bench scoring. I don’t think it’s realistic, but I like hearing it.
IF he gets even 6 or 7 assists off the bench it would be (as Woody might say) HUGE.

I can’t belive it. Woodson leaves Craw glued to the bench. Is he trying to break his spirit too? Is Woodson’s best coaching asset his ability to destroy his players confidence ?
I thought I was going to read how Woodson forgot all about Crawford; you know heat of the moment and all.

Obrien – Great point on Marvin Williams.
I hope he proves me wrong, but I have no faith or confidence in Woody implementing anything of significance to reduce JJ minutes – even if we have the answer (Jamal C.) right on the bench.

Its not enough to just say this in the office Woody has to say it during the game but also back it up by calling sets to get Crawford the ball as well letting his teammates know that in certain situations I expect you to find Crawford just as we would Joe especially when Joes not in the game . No posting up Zaza after the opponent runs off 4 straight points.

Woody has zero player development skills whatsoever. But that’s stating the obvious and this horse has been dead and beaten for years around this blog. Let’s hope he gives JJ rest tonight and we win.

A blind person can see that J.Crawford needs to replace Bibby in the starting lineup…Bibby is a jumpshooter only and a pure liability on defense… I still think resigning Bibby as a mistake..Teague and Crawford give the team an element that we havent had outside of Joe, and thats the ability to break down a defender off the dribble and get in the lane consistantly…. Teague and Crawford dont really settle for the jumpshot which creates open lanes for AL and Josh

I like that Crawford wants to pass more. I also like that Woody wants him on the floor primarily for his scoring, if that makes sense (a coach should always put his players in position to do what they do best). But I had no problem with Crawford’s limited minutes in the first game. Crawford is not a great defender, and the Hawks were having no problem scoring points. In addition, the Hawks were playing a team with a big front line, so they couldn’t go small with the Crawford SG/Johnson SF lineup they have flashed in the preseason. it made no sense to bring in a defensive liability who can score in that situation.
On a regular basis, though, Crawford should definitely be playing 25-30 minutes per game.
Nice to see the Hawks step up the intensity on both ends of the floor after a sleepy start.

Yeah, y’all are going a little overboard with Crawford. He’s a very nice player and an unstoppable scorer when he’s on. Problem is, throughout his career he’s shown that he can’t be relied upon to be “on” every night. This shows itself in his 40.4% career shooting percentage. A role like this is ideal for him, because when he’s on he can take over the game and give the star some rest, and when he’s off the team has plenty of other options.
Joe Johnson may not be LeBron, but don’t sell him short. He has proven that you can build a team around him and ask him to do too much and he can take you to the second round of the playoffs. That’s a hell of a lot more than Crawford has proven in nine years in the league.

The Hawks need to take advantage of these next 6-7 minutes to step on the gas and put the Wizards away — something they struggled to do often last year when they had a big lead at halftime. I hear ya. It IS his call, but I think this was a simple strategic move. There was an interesting few things said about Sund on the contract situation. Basically, it was a very good business decision for Joe to not sign the contract extension right now, as 4 years was the most we could offer him at the moment. If he waits, he can get a longer contract. Can’t remember the details, but it put things in a new light.

Craw can get to the the free throw line, which every good scorer does… Joe doesnt get to the line because he shys away from contact at times

In woodys offense of 1000 dribbles JCraw is much better player than joe in terms of off the dribble iso’s… Joe is a much better all around player…. Good game, and here are a few more observations:
1) I really want J.Craw in the 4th quarter, rather than Marvin. Marvin had 1 or 2 plays, but the guy is just an average basketball player. He appears bigger each year, but he is way too frail and awkward to make any major contributions to this team. By having Jamal in in the 4th, we have a potent scorer who can help spread the floor
2) We did a poor job on Mcghee and Blatche
3) We didn’t need Bibby in so many minutes. REST PLAYERS WHO DON’T NEED TO PLAY. MARVIN DOESNT NEED MINUTES. HE SUCKS

Hawks’ Josh Smith becomes youngest to reach 900 blocks
ATLANTA (AP) — Josh Smith is the youngest player in NBA history to block 900 shots.
The 23-year-old Smith, in his sixth season with the Atlanta Hawks, passed Shaquille O’Neal as the youngest to reach the milestone when he rejected a shot by Washington’s Gilbert Arenas with about 4:30 remaining in Friday night’s game.
The block set up a fast break, capped by Smith’s left-handed dunk.
O’Neal was 24 years old when he reached 900 blocks. Smith’s 24th birthday is Dec. 5.

Great WIN for the HAWKS!! I missed most of the 4th, but what I saw was a total different bench. We all saw the Crawford that we know. He definitely picked-up his defense and was blowing by his man. JeJe, I know what your saying about Joe Smith, but I think they there double teaming too hard, leaving people open. I think that will be taking care of as they play more together. JJ only had to play 30mins!!! and we won by double digits!!! I really like the make-up of this team! Bibby looked a lot better on defense and so did Teague. (not great but servicable I didn’t realize Teague only played 8+mins, I thought he played more than that. Great win!!

I love what Jamal Crawford brought tonight on offense. We needed his quick 16 points, especially on a night where Joe was shooting around 30%. I don’t know which was better, the fact that Jamal shot over 40% from the field and provided a great offensive spark, or the fact that this meant Joe only had to play 30 minutes?
Marvin looked like the invisible man for much of the game, but you turn around and see that he nearly finished with a double double, and very quietly kept his man from scoring much. The 9 rebounds he had really jumps out at you. Normally he’s a 5 or 6 rebound guy. Some of that was due to Al and Josh tipping rebounds away from opponents, but guess what? Marvin kept possession.
Josh Smith looked much more mature. He played quite well, and was a serious hustler on the boards, keeping a lot of balls alive (that won’t show up in the stat book), and challenging many more shots (there’s not almost-blocks in the stat column either). It was also another good shooting night for Smith, leading the team with 20 points. Clutch plays on both ends of the court towards the end of the game, he was the biggest difference.
Horford had a rough game offensively, but he finishes with a double-double again, and that’s what you know you get from him minimally.
Bibby was another bright spot in the backcourt. Savvy as all get out with his passing.
Joe Johnson did not shoot well, but he still managed 17 points, the mark of a truly good player. I didn’t like some of his offensive attempts (there was no double team, but he drove into the teeth of a defense that was waiting on him and gave him nothing but an impossible shot), but some of that was play-calling. He more than made up for that by turning the bulk of the ISO plays into post-ups, which forced better personnel and ball movement, and resulted in a positive net gain nearly every time he did it. And who can get mad at a man who gets you 5 boards and 6 assists along with the rest of it?
Gotta give Woody props. The bench got serious minutes and guys like Joe Smith and Mo Evans had nice contributions.

Josh Smith’s accomplishment is even more impressive considering that Dwight Howard entered the league at the same time, is only three days younger than Josh, and is still 85 blocks away from 900. Props to Josh on that accomplishment.
About the game… I don’t want to nitpick, but the Hawks were shooting near 50% halfway through the 3rd quarter and ended up shooting 41% for the game. If they had sustained their earlier level of offensive efficiency throughout the second half, there’s a good chance this would have been even more of a blowout than it already was.
But that said, seeing that the team shot 91% for the game and outrebounded a team that’s longer and taller inside is fantastic.

HAWKS took care of business where it counted, in the paint, and one on one against MILLER on the outside. Defense solid. Worked great.
WIZ tried to put a horsecollar on SMITH, but only partly effective.
McGEE made it interesting for awhile. But he’s a youngun’ and once he lost focus, they reinserted HAYWOOD, and that was the old ball game. ARENAS tried to offset the lack of shotblocking down low that J-Mac brought, but not his old self yet. Pretty clear he’s recovered well. Ultimately, in 2010 he may approach his old self, but not right now. WIZ are still rusty and missing BUTLER(now) and JAMISON. Still, they’re much better with OBERTO, FOYE and MILLER than last year.

Only one person has mentioned that JJ only had 30 minutes tonight.
Why have people complained about Josh Smith’s passing. He made another beauty tonight.

Good job by Woody handling JJ’s minutes tongight. Al did play 39 minutes, but I’m okay with that, because I dont know it wont be the norm.
Marvin didnt do much (offensively) in the game tonight, but Caron Butler didnt do anything either, but Marvin did have 9 rebounds, so I call it a wash. No wonder the Hawks didnt sign a reserve swing man. Crawford and JJ will take some of Marvin’s minutes.
In 2 games, ZaZa is averaging 4 points and 1 rebound. I hope he gets it in going, because Jason Collins hasnt played yet, and Al will need the help.
Congrats to Josh on the blocks record. And I like how he has played the first 2 games.
If we can beat the Lakers in LA, that would be a great way to get some national recognition and start the road trip off with a bang.

Good win. Much better defensive effort. I would have liked to see more of Teague but I think the kid will get the minutes down the road. Its hard to be negative after a win but as we have in the past , once we get a lead we sometimes go into the NFL’s version of prevent defense on the offensive end. We pretty much dribbled the ball and settled for jump shots at one point instead of attacking like we were doing earlier. Marvin was solid but I want to see more from him. At one point during the game I was asking for Mo Evans to come in for Marvin because I just wasn’t seeing anything. We have to bring our A game if we want to compete with the Lakers this weekend.

Jamal Crawford doing what he does best sounds like a plan to me too. And Jamal did an excellent job putting that plan in motion tonight with help from his team mates and of course the wise Coach Woodson. Also the team 2-0 start at home shows that they are sticking to making winning at home a priority. This goes along with his theory of sticking with what you do best. 31-10 at home and 16-25 on the road. Certainly the team is at their best at home. I won’t argue with that. In fact that’s great. They are really defending the Highlight Factory. As a fan I appreciate that. BUT………..nevermind, forget it.

Solid win. Take care of biz at home.
Big Ray’s 9:35 note on Teague going to the bench and sitting next to Woody. Sounds like a hungry young guy buying into the coach’s plan, wanting to hear what the coach has to say. This strikes a stark difference from a kid going to the other end of the bench and scowling because he’s taken out of the game. Law was a college star…a big shot…who came to the next level and never accepted the new role. Looks like Teague understands he’s the new guy and still has something to learn. He’ll get a lot better if he keeps listening to coach.

I will say it again:
Marvin Williams should not be in the game down the stretch. If we are to having any chance of keeping it close tomorrow at LAL, Jamal Crawford needs to play over 30 minutes. Marvin does not scare anybody — he is the true epitome of an average small forward — he’s frail, awkward, and only knows how to have a good looking jumpshot. Are we really paying someone nearly 8 mill a year for that?

Woody have to make sure that Crawford receives his minutes. A scorer must play and be on the floor. I would also like to see Coach Woody play more of a up tempo game. The Hawks are to young to play slow.

Watching the Hawks, as compared to the Celtics, or other great teams, is like watching two different games. All one on one with the Hawks, and other great teams are constantly moving, picking, passing and setting teammates up for easy scores.

I think I may have seen the Hawks future last night. I’m not talking about Jamal starting at the point or Josh’s emergence as a combo forward adept at both positions or Mo becoming the defensive and offensive spark that Mario only supplied defensively.
No, what I saw was either Andre Blatch or Jar’velle McGee in a Hawk’s uniform playing center (after some serious weight training). When Jamison returns, someone’s minutes are going to be drastically cut. One of the two will become redundent and therefore available, most likely this summer. My money is on Blatch because of the Wizards love of McGee. Blatch could come here in a trade for a draft pick and with some special coaching from an Antonio Davis type-what former NBA players don’t live here-he could be the presence in the middle that the Hawks need to go to the next level. with his age, skills and size, he could provide the piece tthat carrys the Hawks to the next level for the next 5 years. Caveat: This assumes that Jamal stays and continues to be the starting point and Marvin replaces Joe when he leaves for the Knicks along with Amar’e.

Some of the mixes last night were beautiful to watch, particularly when Crawford and Smoove were on the floor at the same time…deadly combo. Some of the other mixes didn’t work so well. The Hawks certainly did not play overly well but they still easily had this game in hand. By mid-season we’ll be creeping up into the Easts Top 3.
We finally have the interchangeable parts to play any type of game now. Should be a fun season.

So the Hawks get the Lakers after their first lost at the season, interesting. So much for Reggie Miller’s 20-1 prediction lol. I think one of the keys may be to give Artest the jumper most of the evening. Zaza and Joe Smith should get a lot of time with this lineup I would think. Because Josh matches up better with Artest than Marvin does. You can still see Artest isn’t quite comfortable yet in the triangle. So let him go out and force shots. Also on the defensive end, I don’t see him not ending up with 2 quick fouls trying to guard Josh in the first quarter. As long as Artest is thinking instead of just playing, attack him.
Kobe vs Joe will be a great match up no matter what anyone here thinks about Joe. Bibby will not feel threatened by Fisher (they play the same game), so he can cover him. With Joe free to battle against Kobe, I really don’t see him needing much double team help. I say if Joe can get 7-9 quick points in the first quarter, it’ll be good to take them. But do it while still taken advantage of Josh’s mismatch. I really see the starters playing 35+ minutes tomorrow. And that is ok because these are the WORLD CHAMPIONS who you only play twice a year. Its better to win this game and lose the next 2, than to lose this one and win the next 3.

All one has to do is listen to Crawford and you’ll find he’s a thinker. That’s why I have no doubt he’s perfectly aware of the situation he’s in with the Hawks. This is the 1st winning team he’s been on. He knows JJ turned down the Hawks latest offer and wants to test FA. Personally, I think he’s trying to show he’s more than just a scorer, and can provide everything JJ provides, plus more speed, quickness, versatility and athleticism. If Sund buys in to what he can do, it might make the Hawks more willing to do a sign and trade with JJ rather than resigning him.
Crawford is actually more suited for Woodson’s style of OFF than JJ. JJ is far more dangerous posting up than Marvin. If Woodson used JJ properly, he’d regularly post him on the blocks and take full advantage of his size, strength and passing ability. That way, we could punish teams trying to double him on the post, rather than having him pounding the ball trying to beat double teams out at the key. JUST A THOUGHT.
For the 2nd gm in a row, I want to offer HC Mike Woodson a heart felt thumbs up. We consistently attacked the basket and pushed the ball, like we did against Indy. We maintained good ball movement, with little to no ISO Joe or Bibby. He allowed Teague and Crawford to have the mins needed to be viable contributors and used a 10 man rotation. Now, that’s good coaching, which is all I’ve been asking for all along. It’s Woodson, not JJ or Bibby, that made this decision to play uptempo, increase/maintain ball movement and attack the basket.
The only thing I’d like to see now is for us to abandon the switching DEF we use extensively. That DEF makes it hard for Marvin, Horford and Smoove to play the type of man DEF they’re capable of playing. They’re constantly switching and getting caught up in mismatches. Now that we have Crawford and Teague, and Bibby’s mins will be reduced, we can trust him to hold his own defensively. He’s certainly done a good job so far. We were at our best as a defensively before we started switching everything.
As far as Horford playing 38mins last night and JJ playing 39 against Indy, it shouldn’t be a problem as long as it’s done periodically. Our guys are young enough to be able to play heavy mins on occasions. They should get their rest when we go against teams we should be able to defeat while giving our bench heavy mins. WE’LL GET OUR CHANCE TO SEE HOW MUCH WE’VE IMPROVED SO FAR OUR THIS UPCOMING WEST COAST TRIP.

Enter your comments hereMike Woodson might have too many players. As problems go, this is among the better ones. Indeed, it beats the heck out of the issue Woodson faced when he arrived here in 2004 — having no players whatsoever.
“That team [the 2004-05 Hawks, who lost 69 games] was gutted,” Woodson said Wednesday, speaking before the grown-up Hawks were to open their season against Indiana. “We were in rebuilding mode. We counted on young guys to get better — Marvin [Williams] and Smoove [Josh Smith] and Al [Horford], and even Joe [Johnson] was young — and they have. And if they continue to grow, we’ve got a chance to be in the hunt the next three or four years.”
And they do. But first Woodson has to wrangle a roster unlike any he has had. He has to find minutes for 11 legitimate NBA players, and not many teams ever placate 11 men. So, Woodson was asked, can he?
“It’s something I haven’t done,” he said. “And I will not sacrifice games just to satisfy someone.”
Then this: “It’s important to get a rotation down, and I haven’t quite done that yet. You can’t find 30 minutes a night for 11 or 12 guys.”
Fun with numbers: The Hawks kept seven of their top eight players, drafted Jeff Teague, traded for Jamal Crawford and signed Joe Smith and Jason Collins as free agents. That makes 11 men, 10 of whom have professional pedigrees. And Woodson says of Teague: “He played well enough in preseason to earn some time on the floor. I’m going to play him tonight.”
But now the Hawks have six perimeter players — Mike Bibby, Johnson, Crawford, Teague, Williams and Mo Evans. As Woodson conceded: “It’s not going to be easy to play all six.” Especially if Johnson slides to small forward and takes some minutes there.”
More Woodson: “I wasn’t interested in bringing young guys in [this summer]. We needed veteran guys who’d fit a piece of the puzzle. Our draft choice is going to be our young guy now. And if [Teague] continues to do it over a long haul, he’ll get minutes. I’ve been pretty pleased so far.”
The interior riddle is simpler: Five men for two positions. Horford and Josh Smith to start, Zaza Pachulia and Joe Smith and Collins to relieve.
“It’s important for [bench] guys to know their roles,” Woodson said. “Jamal has got to score. Joe Smith has to defend and rebound. Jason Collins has to defend and give hard fouls and do the dirty work … You’ve got to play well enough to earn your time on the floor.”
There will be difficult moments ahead. Not everyone will work enough to suit him, and one or two will say so publicly. But that’s OK. So long as Woodson establishes a working second unit and eases the load on his starters, the increased depth will yield an increase in victories. Besides, it’s better to have good guys sitting than not have them at all.
“I remember last year after Al got hurt those two times,” Woodson said. “We were exposed. Al’s the one guy I feared going down. But having Joe Smith and Collins, that’s a help.”

GRANDAD-I doubt if they would send both for JJ. We’d have to either include someone else, or exchange some draft picks. As you might have noticed already, we have a lot of bottom feeders lurking around these blogs that like to attack anyone with an actual IQ and something meaningful to contribute, so just ignore the trash. I’d think Sund would be more interested in acquiring draft picks and someone to backup Crawford.
CButler and Marvin are both SF’s, and since neither has true SG skills, acquiring him wouldn’t make a lot of sense, especially if Bibby is the starting PG(he needs the type of ballhandling help that JJ provides). Last yr CButler averaged 6.2RPG, 20.8PPG on 1085FGA’s while playing an average of 38.6MPG. Marvin averaged 6.3RPG, 13.9PPG on 622FGA’s while playing an average of 34.3MPG. Basically, instead of trading for CButler, we could increase Marvin’s FGA’s to Butler type levels and potentially get Butler type scoring numbers. If we reduced Butler’s FGA’s to Marvins level, we’d likely get Marvin type scoring numbers. I think we’d be better served if we acquired a draft pick(s) and someone that could replace JCrawford’s production off the bench.
JEJE-Why do you think the NBA requires all teams to play their gms? Based on assumptions like yours, and last yrs accomplishments, Cleveland should be 2-0 instead of 0-2, shouldn’t they, but they had to play the gms and ended up with results they hadn’t predicted. I’D CERTAINLY HATE TO HAVE YOU, OR ANYONE THAT THINKS LIKE YOU, ON MY TEAM.

MB – I don’t know Sautee or Ken Strickland much less am I posing as one or engaging in some perverse act wi. the other. I have been around
basketball a long, long time. I know a little something about the game and also a bit about talent evaluation. I now enjoy the game for pleasure. Reading this board is both informative and as it turns out somewhat amusing. That is good, given that my Dawgs were neither entertaining, competitive, or even a little bit amusing today. Woody probably is more innovative and aggressive than Willie Martinez. Back to the game I really love; Ken, I do not worry nor am I even ruffled by those who think I cannot clearly formulate my own ideas. Also Ken, I just really like J. McGee and did so even when he played for Coach Fox. Another pt. was; I was trying to match contracts, plus I believe we would need another hoss if we let Joe get away, therefore precipitating another trade involving Caron or Marv based on my previous scenario. Even if Joe stays I think we need one more(to use my word)hoss. Josh is showing signs that he might be that player. My last thought is that eventually we/Hawks need an enforcer around the basket. I suppose I’m one who considers Big Al a 4. Currently as they are constructed…I like our guys, see them competing, contending, and are a pleasure to “pull for” (ol’ country phrase). I hate it when Woody says we are playing for # 4 seed. I would opine that players should be motivated to be Contenders & Winners…capitalization intended. My apologies for this dissertation.

GRANDAD-well spoken. If we continue to have good ball and player movement, attack the basket and run at every opportunity, we can compete with the elite teams with our current lineup. However, we must follow this formula and not revert back to being a jumpshooting halfcourt team like we were before the last 2gms. I’d like to see us use JJ more in the post. His combination of size, height, strength, inside scoring and passing ability would give up a definite advantage 9 times out of ten. I’ll guarantee you teams won’t be as willing to leave Bibby open, or Marvin for that matter, with JJ in the post as they’ve been with him around the key.
With Kobe guarding JJ in the post, I’d give the edge to JJ, but out near the key, I’d give the edge to Kobe. JJ would be a much more consistent and dangerous weapon for us if we posted him up more. He’d almost demand some kind of double team.

Welcome Granddad’s Mother. Feel free to expression your opinion. Yes. You are right. There is a lot of fictional characters on this site.
I must agree. Did you notice how in the last game horford was 4 of 11 from the post. Thats not good at all. Id like to see a higher pct. from the post. Normally the higher pct is the post. He and zaza arent good finishers. Cant blame it on Woodson if you have 11 shots it means hes giving you the opportunity to be a part of the offense. Its up to Horford to make the basket. Woodson cant play for them. Thank God for the Guard play to keep us in the game. I hear them whine alot about how Horford has these double doubles. Yeah, 10 points on 4 of 15 from right under the basket and 5 of the rebounds were his own misses! Lets hope he gets better. Woodson is giving him a opportunities. They dont let woodson shoot for Horford or zaza.
This year hopefully Horford and zaza will learn to finish. Horford is a decent rebounder. Perhaps he can move back to the power forward spot and get rebounds like Dennis rod man use to. Hopefully well get a center at some point.

When you play 4 games in 5 days you need to play 10 players, this will help the starters be able to effectively close a game on the road.
This team will need Jamal to score and dish on the road because this current group of players have a history of playing poorly on the road.

How the Hawks play tonight’s game will mean so much to me. If they get blown out, like they did during the preseason game at Orlando, then the Hawks are who we thought they were.
However, if they put up a good fight, then I will still consider them as a possible 3 seesd in the East, supplanting_________?
We are all familiar with the Hawks woes on the road, but we have Crawford, Joe Smith, Teague, and Collins who are not familiar with the Hawks road malaise.

@Dos…. I think if the Hawks stay healthy they can get the 4 or 5 spot this year. The Wizards will have a very good team once all their players return.
I believe Crawford is the key to the Hawks winning on the road. I do not expect much out of J. Smith, Teague and Collins when it comes to helping the Hawks win on the road.

Things I’d like to see today:
1) Al Horford to stop taking that dreadful contested awkward fadeaway shot he never makes
2) Marvin to actually contribute all 4 quarters and to stop driving the lane with his timid, awkward, and frail body hitting the floor every time
3) Jamal Crawford to shoot whenever the heck he wants to
4) The Hawks to actually run some plays

That is why Woodie is a terrible coach! Woodie will call a time-out to call a clear out for Joe Johnson for the entire 4th quarter. As if teams cannot adjust to guarding JJ in the 4th quarter.
Marvin Williams is just soft. He will always be a 14 point scorer 3 to 5 rebounds and soft defense that is M. Williams.

Coach Woodsons has the same problems as Mark Richt, of the Georgia Bulldogs, he is loyal to a fault. Woodson is gracious to Bibby, because Bibby SAVED Coach Woodson’s job by leading us to the playoffs and taking B-town to 7games. There is no way and I mean NO WAY that Jamal Crawford should be coming off the bench.
I bet that if JJ/Crawford/Marvin/Smoove/Horford were your starting 5, we would be impossible to stop and Bibby coming off the bench would provide a spark with the 3-pt ball.

The wet kisses Jamal got in today’s ajc reveal an appreciation for professional basketball unseen in this city in more than 20 years. And it’s about time!
When Woodson “fiqures out ” a rotation-hopefully based on performance and not his personal preference- things could get really interesting around the ATL.
The Braves are still fighting the war of Northern aggression and the Falcons are ,frankly, defenseless. Jamal has all but stated that he is really a true point guard; tonight’s game with the Lakers will indicate where the Hawks are relative to last year, especially in the front court and Cleveland is off to a shakey start. The Hawks have an excellent opportunity to achieve not only regular season success but with JC at the helm, playoff success as well.

Dos,
I like Crawford at the Point on the offensive end, but on defense, it could be a mismatch in favor of the other team.
I agree that Marvin and ZaZa are clumsy when driving. With ZaZa, I expect him to draw a foul, or turn the ball over. I have not been impressed with ZaZa so far this season. I hope he gets it going tonight, because we will need him against Bynum. And I have not been impressed with Marvin. But its a long season, so he will have his opportunities.
Does anyone know if Gasol is playing? If he isn’t, that would be HUGE for the Hawks. And I wonder if the Lakers will put Artest on Joe, and let Kobe guard Marvin. If Kobe is guarding Marvin, then we need to run some plays for Marvin, let Kobe work.
The Lakers lost at home to Dallas friday night, so I think they will be ready to play. Hawks might have to overcome an early blitz.

O’BRIEN,
There is no way that Crawford is MORE of a defensive liability than Bibby. As far as running plays for Marvin to make Kobe work. That would be a good strategy is Marvin was agressive and had that killer instinct. He lacks that. I would start Crawford tonight. With him coming from the west coast, he is used to the Lakers and what they will bring.

There is no way that Crawford is MORE of a defensive liability than Bibby.
Actually, there is, as anyone who has watched Crawford for the last 9 years (or even the last 2 games) could tell you. Since he’s quicker and taller than Bibby, one would think that he would be a better defender, but he plays neither hard nor smart on that end. He has no feel for the game on defense, and always seems to end up fouling when he does bother to try and make a play on the ball.
If Crawford gave a rat’s ass about defense, he would easily be a better defender than Bibby. I know that the grass always seems greener, but no one but Kelly Dwyer actually says Bibby is one of the very worst defenders in the league. Plenty of people have said the same about Crawford. And there’s good reason for that. Every scouting report on him says the same thing: He doesn’t try. Everyone who watched him play in New York and with the Warriors said the same thing. See his most recent SI scouting report, which called him one of the worst defenders in the league at guard. DraftExpress and Hoopshype both say he doesn’t play defense, and even one of his coaches with the Warriors noted that he didn’t give an effort on D.
And if all that failed you could have just watched the first two games, where he either committed a foul or got torched almost every single time the man he was guarding made a move to the basket. I wish I were exaggerating, but I’m not. At least Bibby often forces his man towards a help defender or hedges enough to cut off his path to the lane – like Steve Nash, Bibby might not have great defensive tools, but he plays smart D. Crawford just gives up on the play when he realizes his man is going to get by him – he doesn’t try to alter his angle to the basket.
The grass isn’t always greener.

Here’s the link to that story about Crawford’s defense in Golden State:
http://48minutes.net/2009/01/16/warriors-trying-to-rebuild-jamal-crawfords-defense-from-ground-zero/
You can go ask Golden State fans or check their message boards to see if they thought Smart’s off-the-court work with Crawford led to him giving more defensive effort on the floor last season.
Hopefully, Woody and Co. will get through to him and make him try harder on the defensive end. But old habits are hard to break.

Nire: Crawford has played on perennially poor teams…and bad defensive teams as well. He was actually an average defender for much of his stay in Chicago, admittedly gave little thought or concerted effort in his last two stops. In his first two games as a hawk…both of which I have dvr’d…he was poor in game one and retty good in game two…actually stripping Arenas in the post on one occasion and keeping him in front and making him pass off on another. Let’s give him some time…by any stretch he is capable of being a MUCH better defender than Bibby who is helpless against either speed OR size.

LOL @ Kobe guarding Marvin. Does he even have to cover him? I saw Luther Head (Who?) who is 6″2 shut down Marvin in Atlanta back in 2008. All you have to do to guard Marvin is stay within 2 feet of him so he cannot get a jumpshot off and if he tries drive, he’ll fall.

Ill bet Bibby cant dunk anymore, any takers? No doubt Crawford is a better point than bibby and could command a double team at times. Dont get me wrong, Bibby is an asset for sure, but if you want to cause Kaos with the other team, Crawford and JJ would be a back court from hell. Im not worried about Crawfords defense. His man is going to be winded anyway after the track me JJ and Crawford would put on. Get them a true center and lets go hunt that title!

Once again I mostly read this board for information. I generally skip over the inane banter. However, earlier I picked up on your clever repartee. For the record, I wish Woody great success. I just don’t see greatness for him. He is workmanlike but not innovative. He does not inspire greatness. He has virtually no charisma. My delemma is that he was my choice when BK was making the selection. He also insults me with his rude language in the media. He should be aware that children and ladies listen to him on occasion. But I do wish him well for in so doing our Hawks will in turn be successful. On another note, I am “country” but be careful because your “bubba” remark was loaded and unappreciated. It would disappoint my real mother. Hopefully , from now on I can give the rebuttals a rest and resrve my comments for the best game with the best athletes on the planet.

NIREMETAL-There’s can be a difference between being a bad defender and not giving a good effort. Bibby’s inability to fight over picks, due an obvious lack of lateral movement, is why Woodson employed a switching DEF. His lack of speed, quickness and lateral movement is also the reason JJ is usually assigned to play the opposing PG’s, instead of SG’s.
No HC that Crawford’s played under has had to take such drastic steps to accomodate any of his DEF liabilities. The fact he’s demonstrated the ability to fight over picks automatically makes him a better defender than Bibby. You mentioned the Warriors. Well, since when has DNelson required a player to play DEF, or designed a recognizable DEF system? And former Knicks HC IThomas, for whatever reason, couldn’t get his players to play OFF or DEF, and in some instances, even enter the gm.
It’s no secret you like Bibby as our starting PG, we’ve had that discussion recently. But to say Crawford, as a defender, is as bad, or worse than Bibby is going way overboard with your enthusiasm for Bibby. Crawford’s ability to effectively fight over picks could eliminate our need to switch on pick and rolls, as well as allow JJ the luxury of going back to defending SG’s instead of PG’s. That, in turn, would be a tremendous help to our frontline, who wouldn’t consistently end up in mismatches because of our switching DEF.
JEJE-I remember seeing 6′7″ 200lb Bruce Bowen of the Spurs hand 7′0″ 245lb Dirk Nowitzki of the Mavericks his lunch the yr Dirk won the MVP award. NOW, DID BBOWEN’S DEF PERFORMANCE AGAINST DIRK MAKE HIM LESS OF A PLAYER? DID IT CAUSE THE NBA TO TAKE BACK HIS MVP AWARD? Come on!!
