The Hawks opened up a can on the Wizards Monday night at Philips Arena, including this nasty dunk from Josh Smith.
HAWKSVILLE – Mike Woodson is retiring his favorite word, for one night at least.
Huge is history. He’s caught the bug from Jamal Crawford, whose passing exploits in the Hawks’ blowout win over Washington Monday night at Philips Arena prompted Woodson to utter this bit of prose:
“It can become contagious,” he said of Crawford’s nine assists off the bench, a total that would have been well into the double digits if not for the greasy fingers and a couple of risky attempts. “We have guys that can, our perimeter guys can all pass the ball. It’s just a matter of guys sacrificing the ball for the sake of the team. There will be times when Jamal will have big scoring nights, and [Jeff] Teague’s going to have big scoring nights. And there will be nights when Mike Bibby and Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams and Josh Smith have big scoring nights. So I think there are enough scoring weapons that we don’t have to depend on one or two guys to score all four points this year. We’ve come a long way in that regard, and we have to utilize it as much as we can.”
The Hawks piled up 29 assists on the night while toying with the Wizards, who played without Gilbert Arenas (flu). Rookie point guard Jeff Teague showed out again (16 points and five assists) and there were nice contributions from veterans Joe Smith (four rebounds and two points) and Jason Collins (four points and four rebounds before going out late after rolling his ankle).
Crawford’s passing, however, stood out above the fray.
“I had no idea you could pass like that.” one keen observer told Crawford to his face after the game. “Seriously, I didn’t know you could pass like that.”
Crawford defended his passing ability and made clear his approach during the preseason.
“You can’t go out there just shooting like crazy,” Crawford said. “Especially for me, I’m in a totally different role. I have to get used to coming off the bench and picking my spots. Coach wants me to come out aggressive. He’s like, ‘just go, go.’ But I’m taking a more measured approach. I’m feeling my way through it and seeing exactly where I can be effective for this team.”
One thing no one has to worry about is a tug of ward between Crawford and Teague (a subtle dynamic that eliminated the chance that Acie Law IV and Flip Murray could coexist on the second unit together last year). Crawford and Teague have already developed a sound chemistry working together, which each one knowing when to defer to the other in terms of initiating the offense or going into a more offensive mode.
“We love playing together already,” Crawford said. “It’s a mutual respect thing. I liked his game in college and he told me he’s admired my game for a long time. So it’s a smooth relationship already. We’ve got a lot of pieces. We really, really do. And I think the more time together and the more time on the court together, we’re going to be fine. I know it’s just the preseason, but we have a chance to be really, really good.”
HIGHLIGHT FACTORY ANYONE
OLD HEADS IN THE BUILDING
So you had to wait a while to see the old fellas?
Al Horford and the rest of the Hawks did, too.
But it was worth the wait, seeing Joe Smith and Collins on the floor in uniform. Even Crawford has been tossed into the mix with the old heads, even though he’s yet to see his 30th birthday.
“I’m definitely excited to see Joe (Smith) get out there and play,” Horford said. “He’s going to be a big help for our team, as far as his leadership and the stuff he does on the court. And Jamal just makes the game easier for everybody else. I’m just excited to have those guys.”
FOOTBALL IN THE BLOOD
Count Zaza Pachulia among the converts to our brand of football.
His maiden voyage into the realm of domestic football, he took in Sunday’s Falcons-Bears game at the Georgia Dome, turned him into a true fan.
“It was tough for a while because I wasn’t sure about the rules and stuff,” Pachulia said. “My first time changed me from where I was before. I have interest now. We sat on the 50 yard line, pretty good seats. And it was good energy. I felt it inside. I left the Georgia Dome knowing that I want to come back, when I have the chance.”
THE LAST WORD
The Hawks didn’t just run circles around the Wizards Monday night. They ran them ragged. So much so that Wizards coach Flip Saunders polished off the night like this:
“I hope our guys worked on their conditioning, because from the standpoint of our game plan, we didn’t execute anything tonight. What i thought was disappointing was that this was an opportunity for some of our guys to step up, but no one really did that. We have to do all of the little things offensively and defensively to stay in the game. We definitely won’t be able to play this team this way in the regular season.”
The Hawks and Wizards will see each other again soon, Oct. 30 in the Hawks’ second regular season game of the year.

Thanks Biggest Nuttz, I don’t know what game some of these people are watching. Its hard for them to say what ESPN,TNT and last years coach of the year polls said, Woods has done a fine job! This organic lie, is ,a lie. This team is winning and producing in large part because of Woodson. The Bubba Crew cant fix their mouths to say that. How sad.

The man, and I use the term loosely, has an ego the size of the entire state of georgia.
This from the man who just last night blustered about his business school GPA. By the way, I guess they didn’t teach you capitalization rules in business school – it’s “Georgia.” So the next time you try to correct someone for making a grammar/spelling error (which Sekou didn’t – h/t to Nicholas for explaining that better than I could), look back at this. Glass houses and all that, bro.

Did anyone see Tim Legler’s top 5 teams in the East?
They were 1)Cavs 2)Celtics 3)Magic 4)Hawks 5)Raptors.
He has the Hawks winning 45-50 games. He also thinks the Magic will miss Hedo, and Hedo’s addition is why he put the Raptors at 5.
I think the Hawks can win 50-55 games (mostly due to more road wins), and I think they can challenge for the 3 seed.

What’s up Doc, Ditto on these Sekou haters and English nires…ooops I meant nerds. I will chatcha @ the game this season…me and the wifey will be in the house…or is that the wifey and me…what ever. We done step our game up…now I want have to walk that far to get to the spot. Heh heh
Well, after sifting through a couple of nire’s novels, and checking out the comments about the last roster spot, I am sticking with Othella Hunter to some how making the squad. HE GOT GAME…if we do not sign him…someone with snatch him up you can count on it. I use a comma oooooooosp!!!!!!!
Going against conventional wisdom…I could see the Hawks expand to 14 and go with two Bigs. I love Rio and agree with most about Stackhouse…however, not the Stackhouse that played in the playoff last season…that is probably why he is still unemployed. To me…Rio is a duplication of services. Mo and Teague should be able to fill that void…Daaaaaaam I use a comma again!!!!!!
Doc, this blog is getting too complicated…I better go find an English blog…MAYBE THEY TALKING ABOUT BASKETBALL.lol
Anyway, both guys would be good additions for the team…but I think the opportunity to develop two 5s and develop a guy that can play the 4 and 5 triumphs signing another SG.
Situational SGs are in abundance…they will be available…Bigs are not. Sign Siler to some kind of D league contract and go with Othella and Sims. Between Morris, Sims, and Siler we should be able to develop at lease two Bigs for the future. Plus Othella is a great guy to have coming off the bench in a emergency.
I think Morris is going to surprise some this season. When you look at his actual NBA experience, it is not much…a stint in NY and the Hawks…I’m convinced we have seen the best this kid has to offer…Bigs develop slower. Morris is a Big…he is under contract and he is not blowing the up cap…let him play…we will see if he has put in work to improve his game. If Morris does not pan out…you got Siler/Sims to fall back on. Did I mention they are all very cheeeeeeeeeeap…That’s What up!!! We gotta start some where developing Bigs. I would not be disappointed if any of the aforementioned guys makes the roster.
GO HAWKS!!!!

Why is there a problem with giving Woody a hard time last year. I think Acie would have been a much better player than he ended up. Remember why we didn’t understand why Acie was on the bench when Bibby’s shot was off and opposing PG’s were killing us? I think Solo would and could have been better with more minutes without hurting the team to much. While Evans played ok Hunter should have gotten more burn. Al should have had more offensive opportunities etc.
Coach is saying the right things this year, Every player seems to be saying the right things. Over training camp there seems to have been a transformational period of change. As long as Crawford and JT play great Woody will look good and change will be easy.
If we lose three close games in a row against bad teams will we be right back to a tight rotation? The Jury is still out. Will JJ go to the ISO even if were winning because he is getting 14 attempts instead of 24 and is in fear of not making the all star game? What if JJ plays so great Woody can’t take him off the floor and then later in the year he gets tired. If Woody sticks with Bibby and we lose a couple how many of you will wonder why Crawford and JT aren’t playing more.
It’s all conjecture and speculation at this point. We’ll know a lot more in 20 games. We may get touched by PG’s and Big’s or play on the level of the big three. One thing for sure, I am pumped about our chances but games have to be played. We can only pencil in wins and loses one at a time.
While probably unrealistic, I would love 60 wins and getting to the championship. In the meantime there is plenty to blog about, good and bad.

I Should have said, I’m not convinced we have seen the best Morris has to offer…too early in his career…surly he can develop to be at lease as serviceable as Kwame…he is still in the league and what is Collins career numbers again? Developing Bigs takes time…look at Bynum in LA…that is all I’m saying with regards to Morris, Siler, and Sims.

NIRE-I don’t know how you missed the statements made by SAUTEE, which I repeated in my post, where he said Teagues TURNOVERS and A/TO ratio vs Bibby’s was the deciding fact on whether he’d be fine with starting Teague over Bibby. I think I made a valid illustration on why it would be a mistake to limit any decision strickly on that criteria. I’ve had fans who’ve disagreed with me state that Teague shouldn’t be given a chance to start until at least mid season because he hasn’t proven anything yet. Some even referenced Bibby’s savy, his low turnover A/TO ratio, and his ability to throw alley oop passes.
Yet, all of these individuals refuse to acknowledge or address the effects his poor DEF has on the other players, his lack of quickness, speed and inability to penetrate and create easy scoring opportunities for others, or the fact that teams recognize these OFF limitations and take full advantage of them while continuing to consistently double/triple team JJ. Bibby’s OFF limitations make it far too easy for DEF’s to shut JJ and our overall OFF down, especially when he’s not hitting his 3’s. Teams consistently exploit his NO D, which forces JJ to wear down in mismatches while trying to cover the qucker, faster premier PG’s that Bibby should be covering.
I know you also like Bibby as the starting PG over Teague, and we all know Woodson isn’t going to make a change as long as Bibby is healthy. However, that doesn’t mean starting Teague over Bibby now it’s the right thing to do, especially if the team wants to significantly improve.
OBRIAN-I agree with your assessment. However, if we’re good enough to generate more road wins, wouldn’t that also mean we’re good enough to generate more wins at home as well? I don’t see Cleveland winning 66gms again this yr. Their achilles heal was completely exposed by Orlando during the playoffs, and Shaq definitely doesn’t solve the problem they had stopping the pick and roll. Teams are going to start the season off attacking that weakness.
We proved at home in our playoff series against Boston that we can handle them if we run and attack the basket, as well as their poor transition DEF. We also proved on their homecourt that we can’t stay on the floor with them if we try to match them by slowing our OFF down and playing our limited brand of jumpshooting, ball pounding, ISO halfcourt basketball. The teams that finished ahead of the Hawks last yr had better go relatively injury free and and/or suffer any chemistry issures, or they’ll be looking up at us in the standings.
LET’S HURRY UP AND GET THE SEASON STARTED!!!! GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!

I don’t see West getting a job in the NBA but I would like to think so. He provided some great moments and his hustle was unquestioned. Are we sticking with 13 spots or will Siler and Hunter both make the roster. Do we dump both and go with a vet like Stackhouse? Hunter seems to have played better and more often. The edge goes to him. I guess we’ll know in a few days.

Mario gets the ax i see, not a big supris.the man is a one trick pony, all hustle and no real skill. I believe he was doomed from the start- A 6′4 guard with no handle or jumper is lucky to be on any NBA roster. I wish him luck tho-hope he finds a home sumwhere. Hunter as the 13th man/3rd SF Siler to our D league affilliate.
Ant- The replacement refs are history, The regular refs just signed a new barganing agreement with the league.
We are not signing Stackhouse! get over it already, just like you got over Flip not being resigned Jeez.

Big game friday night against our division rivals. This should be an intrestingg game, If we win or its a close game that should give us some idea as to just how good this team is. I still think Orlando is the second best team in the east. I was watching these guys against Chicago and every plaer they brought in was putting in work. VC,Bass,Anderson,Barnes all looked good- hell even grandpa Anthony Johnson was playing well.
I also think the Hawks West (Portland) will suprise this year,my boi Batuum is gonna break out this year. If Oden can stay healthy they will be a #3 seed come april.

I just wanted to ask a question to get everyone’s opinion. Is Al Horford really any taller than Josh Smith? When I see those two close together on the court they look exactly the same height to me. And if they are the same height wouldn’t that mean our center is only 6′9″ tall. I like Horofrd but he is definently a tweener PF/C at best and only a power forward at worst. Without any real superstars can we really expect to compete for a championship with Horford at center? I know this team has risen from the ashes and I am certainly excited about the upcoming season but once we solidify ouselves as 50 win team, the next logical step is to start thinking about a championship. Right? And if we won’t to really compete for that championship want the Hawks have to seriously consider a bit of a roster shakeup? I don’t see us getting it done without a superstar or a more dominate center. And believe me I know that superstars and good centers don’t grow on trees. I guess thats why I would like to see the Hawks hang on to Garret Siler. Since centers are so hard to find we should’nt leave any stone unturned. Not saying the kid is going to develop into something but what if he does? It would be painful watching him rebound and block shots for another team two years from now.

Howard is the most athletic/dominant big man in the league and he looked like a mere mortal against the triple towers in LA. I love Al’s heart and rugged play but like i said before a 6′9.5 center will not lead you to the promise land.
Then again size is’nt everything,If you put a 7 footer on the team like Bogut I think we still end up 3 or 4……Howard on this team brings us a championship but thats not gonna happen. I just laugh when i hear people say’n Hawks are title contenders……..Stop sippn that sauce!!!

But seriously though they are less than twenty bucks. I’m gonna miss the hustle and energy that Mario brought to the team. I wish him the best. God has more in store for him. Honestly though on the real it is my opinion that Othello Hunter earned that last spot on the team. He’s been balling during the preseason as well as in the little mini camp. My vote is for Othello Hunter. You guys can argue about the technical reasons why he should or shouldn’t get the last spot, I just really feel that he was the standout guy out of all the dudes trying to make the squad.

Ken,
Ha – I did read Sautee’s posts several times, and in the context of the wider argument on Teague vs. Bibby, it didn’t seem to me that he was saying that it was the deciding factor. You have a tendency to isolate individual quotes/comments and argue on them instead of addressing the broader point. Sautee’s point was that TOs and the Ast/TO ratio are the only barometers we really have for gauging a PG’s ability to take care of the ball, and that if he can’t take care of the ball, he shouldn’t be starting. If you disagree with either of those statements, by all means I would LOVE to hear your counter-arguments. But he never said “we should decide who starts based solely on who has the higher asst/TO ratio,” which is what you make it sound like he said. Anyway, too late now, but I shouldn’t be speaking in Sautee’s place, so I’ll stop.
As for the DEF issues and the penetration issues, etc, they HAVE been addressed several times, including by me. You just choose to ignore our counterarguments and pretend they never were made:
Yet, all of these individuals refuse to acknowledge or address the effects his poor DEF has on the other players,
I have acknowledged that, and so have others. But I’ve also pointed out that we have zero evidence Teague can do any better – and the existence of Sam Cassell and Luke Ridnour is proof that you can’t just say “it couldn’t be worse.”
his lack of quickness, speed and inability to penetrate and create easy scoring opportunities for others,
No one has disputed that Teague is faster than Bibby, and pretty much everyone has in fact explicitly acknowledged that. But if speed and agility were all that mattered, we could just bring in Usain Bolt and call it a day. There’s more to being a PG than that, and Bibby’s proven strength as a floor general, the fact that he is constantly setting screens for others both on and off the ball, and the other facets of his game have made him one of the NBA’s best point guards in the past decade. Teague? We don’t know anything about that.
Also, I have said a number of times how the idea that Bibby is unable to penetrate and create scoring opportunities for others is just BS – as anyone who watched him run the pick and roll with Horford or who watches him throw up alley-oops to Josh on a near-nightly basis would have to acknowledge. I’ve said it 3-4 times. You ignore it every time. So don’t pretend that other people are “refusing to acknowledge” your counterarguments. Go back and actually read other people’s posts carefully before you say stuff like that.
or the fact that teams recognize these OFF limitations and take full advantage of them while continuing to consistently double/triple team JJ.
Gee really? Responsibility for the constant double and triple teaming of JJ is never talked about? That comes up ALL THE TIME on here, and blame variously gets placed with Woody, JJ himself, Marvin, Josh/Al, Bibby, the Sund, the moon, the stars, and Mrs. O’Leary’s cow. Come on, now.
The argument isn’t over whether Bibby has weaknesses – it’s 1) whether his weaknesses are as damaging as you say they are; and 2) whether we should run under the assumption that a 20-year old who was not even remotely close to the first PG selected in his class should immediately be given the starting reins without ever having played a second in a real NBA game. People do acknowledge Bibby’s limitations. You just choose to pretend they don’t, and I honestly don’t know why.

Jo Mama ,
I wouldn’t sweat the thing with Woody. If you ask me, his level of appreciation/popularity has actually risen higher than it’s ever been. Even some of us who have been harder in our criticism are both rooting for him and seeing where he can break through. It’s not easy for an NBA head coach. You come in knowing your the guy on the hook. Look at how many crackheaded idiot players stay on teams longer than their coaches do, and the players are getting paid MORE!
Anyway, check this out: if we break into the top three or upset anybody in the playoffs, Woody could be a shoe-in for COY. Seriously. I mean, Samuel might have a heart attack, but wouldn’t that be something?
Now tell me this: what happens if the team reaches new heights, Woody gets a new contract, and he gets big time blog love? Man, are you gonna have anything left to talk about??
Just pickin’ with ya. Now for the serious question….

Roan St,
Few points in reference to your last post. I think Josh has grown an inch or two since he entered the league. So I bet he’s closer to 6′10 than he is 6′9. Also, I can recall Alonzo Mourning being a dominant center and he was listed at 6′10 (maybe in sneakers). And Dwight Howard is probably a shade taller than 6′10 (if that) as well. So I don’t think 7′0 is a pre-requisite for championship starting centers height (it maybe preferred). Add Kendrick Perkins (forget what he’s listed as) and Ben Wallace to the list of centers who’s under 7′0 as well…
All I'm Saying Is...

terrell barron,
“Rod, Josh Smith is the best defensive player on the Hawks, BESIDES MARIO???? Mario gets my hustle award, but a great defender? Please! I can name at least 3 players on the Hawks roster that play better defense than Mario. He’s a great story and all, but some people confuse hustle, energy, etc… with being a good basketball player.”
Read you post again. You said great defender not me. I said the best on the team. Good basketball player? I said he was a good defender. He WAS one of the only guys on the team who could keep offensive players in front of him. You call it hustle, effort, energy and I call it good defense. YOu don’t have to put words in my mouth, my post stated my feelings. Good luck to Mario.

So much for my theory on Rio…damn, hate to see him go. You can’t teach height, but I really do think you also can’t teach heart, and his supply of that was limitless.
I’m happy with either of the remaining two making it, although I’ll go with my pick from way back in minicamp – Othello.

roan st, been a long time bro, but yes to your question…Detroit did. I submit that AL has just as much talent as Ben Wallace…and Nene with Denver is another example…although he has a lot more bulk than Al. However, I agree ultimately it will take some reshuffling of the roster to get that dominate Big…then you got to find a team that is crazy enough to give one up. Ditto on developing Siler…apparently Sund and Woody agree too.
Nire did not give Siler a snowball chance in hell to compete with those guys at the begging of training camp because of a bunch of stats. Keep working Siler u gone make it may one day Big Boy…shove crow in the mouth of your detractors.
When I seen him at the game…I said Sekou is right…he is huuuuuuuuuuuuge!!!
Go Othella, Go Siler, and GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Appreciate it nire.
You know ultimately if either Siler or Hunter or even Gerald Green(ariose) gets that last spot. If we see any of those players for more than 8 minutes a game our season is in SERIOUS trouble.

Isn’t it possible that both Siler and Hunter make the final cut? In that scenario, they send Siler to D-legend and Hunter becomes the reserve.

Uh oh, Mike. You reference Stats and Nire in the same sentence. He’s gonna get you. Now lets see, that’s Big Ray, Me and You made a comment about Nire and Stats. One time a mistake, 2nd time and so on.. Hmmmmm……
