Vacation visions

Might a Smith family reunion (of sorts) be in the works for Joe and Josh (no relation) this season with the Hawks?

Might a Smith family reunion (of sorts) be in the works for Joe and Josh (no relation) this season with the Hawks? Time will tell. The Hawks are working on it, though.

THE OPEN ROAD - I’m not supposed to be here right now.

Seriously. I looked it up. Vacation is meant to be “leisure time away from work, devoted to rest or pleasure.”

But the phone doesn’t stop ringing because you want it to (next time, we all need to go on vacation together … or at least at the same time).

After being off the grid (mostly) for an entire family reunion weekend, I’ll admit that I’m a bit foggy on some of the details about what went on in Las Vegas for Josh Smith at the USA Basketball mini-camp and just about any other hot debate that’s gone on around here the past few days (and for the record, I’m told that despite a tepid performance in Saturday’s scrimmage, his time with the USA B’ball folks was a rousing success because it allowed quite a few people that weren’t familiar with him other than what they’ve seen, heard and read to get a much better for feel for him as a person and player).

But I do have some thoughts about a few other things, namely the Hawks’ mini-camp from last week, the state of negotiations with Marvin Williams and the Hawks’ continued pursuit of Joe Smith. So if you’ll forgive your host for leaving the party for a few days (technically, I’m on vacation until August – just in case Wifey decides to check the blog and see what we’ve got going on), here are some of my vacation visions:

JOE SMITH probably didn’t realize he had multiple stalkers until he left Atlanta Friday. That’s when the Hawks’ full court press for the veteran free agent’s signature shifted from face-to-face to long distance. Well, mostly long distance. The Hawks do have a secret weapon in Smith’s Phoenix backyard. Mike Bibby’s basketball royalty in the Valley. And he’s one of several Hawks working hard on the recruiting trail to bring Smith into the fold. Zaza Pachulia knows Smith well from their time together in Milwaukee and said he would use all his Euro-charm (at lunch Friday and beyond) to make sure Smith was aware of just how much he is wanted and needed by the Hawks. All that said, major work must be done to secure Smith’s signature on a contract. It’s not secret the Hawks aren’t paying the same rate for backup bigs that some other teams are (for example, Chris Wilcox got cash – $6 million over two years – in Detroit that he never could have from the Hawks. Same goes for Drew Gooden and the reported $4.5 mil he’ll bring in on a one-year deal with the Spurs).  So they have to find ways (PLAYING TIME!!!!!!!!!!) to lure the kind of players they need to help bolster their cause. It probably helps that, in a summer marked by taking care of in-house business (home grown free agents), Smith is the first player outside of the family that the Hawks actually courted. Again, there is major work still to be done on this front.

YOU WERE WARNED THAT THINGS between the Hawks and Marvin Williams would drag out this summer. I wasn’t joking. Nothing has changed. The sides remain on opposite sides of the restricted free agent street right now. I know that other outlets reported that the sides were “close” and all that, but it’s just not true. The sides are talking. And they’ll be back at it this week. Anyone that sees an end in sight has X-ray vision, because I wouldn’t be surprised if things lasted deep into next month. Look back at the Hawks’ dealings with many of their own players in the past (I know Mike Bibby and Zaza coming back as quickly as they did had you juiced but that was out of the ordinary for the Hawks). It usually takes time, especially for restricted free agents.

JEFF TEAGUE is going to make a lot of people forget about the disappointing saga that was Acie Law IV’s tenure with the Hawks. Teague did more than just turn heads during the Hawks’ mini-camp last week. He sparked conversation about point guard play I hadn’t heard in my time covering the Hawks before last week. “He did some things as a young point guard that we hadn’t seen on our practice floor since Chris Paul and Deron Williams were here for predraft workouts,” one Hawks assistant coach told me last week. That’s as strong a statement as I’ve heard from anyone in the Hawks’ camp regarding a young point guard. While they all agree that Teague has plenty of polish that can be applied to his game, there is no debate about who or what the Hawks expect him to become. “I can’t wait to see him in training camp,” Randolph Morris said. “I think he’s going to give people fits with his quickness and his ability to get to the rim whenever he wants to. That’s going to be fun to watch.”

OBSERVATIONS ABOUT A FEW OTHER GUYS that stood out (for various reasons) during mini-camp:

- Othello Hunter was more impressive than any other player in camp, after Teague. His range on his jumper has improved dramatically. But we all know that his chance at making a dent in the Hawks’ roster and playing rotation depends on his ability rebound, defend and provide the hustle plays required of frontcourt journeymen in the NBA. The improved shot is an added bonus. I’d have him locked up on a two-year deal right now. If he keeps improving, someone is going to get a steal.

- Garret Siler’s stock with fans and media types can’t get much higher. He’s become something of a phenomenon around these parts, thanks to some serious hype and the big fella backing it up with strong performances in the Las Vegas summer league and last week. Siler’s raw and would be a super-sized Lunchable for superstars like Dwight Howard, Shaq and Pau Gasol, not to mention brutes like Kendrick Perkins and Brook Lopez. I know you want to believe that he’s the he’s the answer to the Hawks’ big-man problems … but that would mean all 30 teams missed on the guy, twice for some teams, on draft night.

- Randolph Morris has shed the kind of weight all of us “bigger” guys would love to be able to shed. And he did it organically, which makes it particularly impressive. He had his moments during mini-camp but I’m not sure he blew anyone (in charge) away with the work he did. I don’t know what he has to do to make a move up the Hawks’ rotational food chain, though he is under contract for this season, which has to help. But the fact is, even with all the work Morris has done, the Hawks are still hunting reserve bigs.

- Frank Robinson did it again. He showed up. Played his guts out, literally. And his reward, like that of most guys in his predicament, will probably be an invite to training camp. Robinson is the kind of guy that will always make training camp interesting because he’s fearless and is skilled enough to make you wonder why he’s not on someone’s NBA team? He won’t make the Hawks’ roster this season. But I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the middle of the action during training camp.

- Yoroslav Korolev was supposed to be a bust. When he crashed and burned with the Los Angeles Clippers (they made him the 12th pick of the 2005 draft), he joined the ranks of Darko Milicic, Nickoloz Tskitishvili and Fran Vasquez on the list of worst ever Euro-lottery busts. Korolev was just a kid when the Clippers drafted him but he looked grown up last week. He was much better than I expected him to be and showed off a nice shooting touch from long distance. He’d be worth keeping an eye on for the future.

- Brian Hamilton surprised me as much or more than any player in camp. I honestly wasn’t aware of him at all before last week. But mini-camp is a showcase for under the radar players like Hamilton, a smooth 6-6 swingman that impressed on both ends of the floor. His defense is what made him stand out. Yet he showed plenty of offensive ability and a nose for the ball on both ends of the floor that would make Mario West jealous. He’s another guy that will surely be in someone’s training camp pushing someone under contract to the limit.

Those were just some of the guys that made lasting impressions on me. Hawks coach Mike Woodson remarked several times that it was by far the best (rookie/free-agent) camp conducted during his tenure with the Hawks and I have to agree that it was the best I’ve seen in my time dealing with the Hawks (I missed his first one, when Josh Smith and Josh Childress were rookies). But there wasn’t a single player in town last week that didn’t belong on that floor.

IN CLOSING, I’d be remiss if I didn’t give my man Solomon “Solo” Jones a proper send off here. One of the truly unique characters to grace us with his presence the past three years, Jones is moving on this week to a two-year deal with the Indiana Pacers. Solo is moving on at a time when the Hawks could use a big or two like him, which makes his departure for Indiana all the more perplexing. After all, he was a restricted free agent, due close to a $1 million if he had signed his qualifying offer (the QO was rescinded so he would be allowed to sign with the Pacers without any interruption). I needed an explanation and Solo provided one last week. “The Hawks kept it real with me,” he said. “They told me that my role was going to be pretty much the same as it was last year, and that I wouldn’t have a chance to move up and get more time unless somebody got hurt like last year. And I realize that’s just the way it’s going to be with Josh and Al [Horford] and Zaza already in place.  It’s cool. I get a chance to go somewhere else and try and start over and see if there’s a chance to have a bigger role. The Pacers want me up there right away to get to work and that’s a good thing. I’m looking forward to the opportunity. But I appreciate the Hawks keeping it straight with me and not trying to sell me something that they couldn’t deliver in terms of playing time and opportunity.”

If it’s good enough for Solo, it’s good enough for me.

Oh yeah, let’s go with the quotes… “No deal goes across that isn’t approved by the owners. Remember, there is a team governor (it used to be Belkin) that approves or denies all moves/transactions. Nice attempt at nailing Sund to the wall, while exonerating the owners”.

So again I ask, what’s the point? That owners/GMs and Head Coaches all have a big chunk of rear-end tied to the success of a team? I’ll buy that. That every GM in the league needs to sell their Governor on a transaction? Agreed. That Sund did nothing last season because he wanted to evaluate his new team? True. With evaluation in hand, he seemingly has decided that the basic composition of last year’s team was adequate (including the coaching staff)? Sure. And that we are left with a single quality big in free agency (Joe Smith) while likely awaiting for Sund to finish the Marvin contract? I’m there.

With regard to the trade for a big…. I have no idea what Sund may do. I just HAVE to believe that he will do something. And maybe, he delivers Smith (or said differently… he and Gearon and Woody deliver Smith) and we’ll be OK. Maybe the end result will over-ride the process. That certainly is my opinion with Woody. Up close, I see all of the warts but they are easy for me to over-look when the team succeeds. Likewise, I will overlook watching every good apple picked from the tree as long as Sund grabs hold of the last one.

Crawford>>>>>>>>>> flip. Look I like what Flip did for us last year but it was so many games where he would come in chucking and turning the ball over that I would just want to scream. Bringing Flip back only gives Woodson a reason not to play Teague. I might be alone in this but I would like to actually see the young guy play and succeed…. I will be glad when the season starts and Crawford proves he will be valuable to this team so folks can stop complaining about him. We gave up two guys who the Warriors already want to dump for a guy who can light it up and take the pressure off of Joe.

With the news of Solo dipping for Indiana, I must say my current depth chart for the Hawks looks really sad beyond SG. As it fits right now, losing Solo is a bit of a pain since we lack that front court depth we on this blog have been vetching about since Clevelandiskotsia pwned us. The only thing I hope comes from this is that we can sign Marvin for whatever he’s asking and start focusing on our front court depth. Even if Siler is a big-man project (and Mullens was going to be one as well), we don’t have anybody beyond Zaza and Horford who can really do any damage down low without it coming off the break or those few beautiful moments when Josh drives to the basket and leaves his defender in the dust (something which he must do more of this season to improve his stock in ATL). So give in to an almost positively beautiful steal and get Siler on the squad, and considering what we’d probably have to pay Joe Smith (his salary off the bench was still $5 Mil), we wouldn’t break the bank and we would have a solid center piece to build around if Marvin just takes the QO and leaves us next summer for whatever pastures he might find. That leaves picking up Mario (since he has that QO on the table), and maybe even resigning Othello Hunter for the final piece of the front court pie. MAKE IT HAPPEN….

…and in closing, anybody in Atlanta should come to Apache Cafe on Saturday the 1st o’ August and check out Edan, Lee Harvey Oswald, The Nice Guise, Noot’d'Noot and Newberry Jam get down….$7 tickets in advance, $10 at the door…

Ray, it’s not so much about the order of things (as an indication of priorities). I certainly get that. It’s about budget management. I remain steadfast in believing that dude had a budget to start this off-season (and no, I have no proof of that, just a belief that it is the most logical way to approach an off-season for any professional sports team). So if he spends close to 90% of his budget before addressing front-court depth, then I tend to believe that it is a low priority. When I watch the pecking order of quality bigs get down to Solomon Jones and we have signed NO ONE, I tend to consider that an indication of his pecking order. The powerhouse teams declared that they would exceed the luxury threshold when there were players available that could help them truly compete for a title. Those teams snatched up Rasheed and Bass and Gortat and Moon and Barnes before they were left with the Stromiles and Skinners and Juan Dixon type players. Didn’t we all applaud Sund for moving with quickness when he signed Bibby and Zaza? Didn’t we all think “wow, we have a plan and we’re moving on that plan”? Weren’t we thrilled that he attacked and didn’t sit back (like what seemingly happened with Josh & Josh last summer)? So yeah, maybe I (and others) became too intoxicated and didn’t realize that those deals were falling in his lap (like RandMo campaigned to join the Hawks last season).

Maybe he does just take it as it comes along because he prioritizes negotiating the right contract over choosing the right player. If he truly believes that his principle job is salary management and that a player like Chill could be easily replaced by a cheaper set of assets, then that may be what we’re working with. Interesting. That may actually be the case. Because when a GM “shows interest” they likely are going to over-pay (especially early in free agency). So maybe Sautee is right, he allows a good deal to fall in his lap. And maybe what we saw with the way he handled Chill is the way he will manage things moving forward. If Joe Smith won’t come on board, he probably feels like he could get comparable value in someone else. Of course, at some point, we’re left with Stromile Swift. But in his mind, Stromile at the right price may be much better for the team than Joe Smith at the wrong price. As a fan, I don’t like that approach but I could certainly understand that perspective from an experienced GM.

Hoops- Great post 4:09…..I think that’s about the best lineup we can hope for…… I wish we weren’t tied down to Morris and his contract. I’d say we trade Morris, Evans, and one of our two second round picks next year to get something (a 4th BIG), then we could resign Flip, but we have no way to know if Korolev can fill the shoes Evans did last year. He was a big part of our success when Marvin went down… Maybe between JJ, Crawford, Flip, Hunter and Korolev they could handle the job. Plus what could we get in return that won’t hurt our cap and that would be worth the trade? Also Sekou reported that other than Teague Othello turned the most heads. Where does he fit in? Development league?

AJ, We have Marvins Bird Rights so he’s not holding up anything. Actually, all that means is HE WILL BE THE LAST CONTRACT SIGNED THIS SUMMER. We have to have room to do other things first.

Sund has just as much say so, as any other GM in the Leauge. The ALL have to go through their respective owners at the end of the day. What if Marc Cuban was our Owner? We might as well just not have a GM lol!!

Ray, I defenetly agree that aquiring Crawford for two players that baisically didn’t have a futere in Atlanta was a great deal. It was even better because of the fact that Crawford virtually costs the same amount as those two. Oh yeah, and he can play ball a lil bit as well. I like the guy, I just think Flip would be a great Fail-safe signing(besides, hes one of the best bench goons in the leauge!!!)

Also, That was a funny low blow hehehehe, but i’m sure AJ has a few archives just in case lol!!!!

Does anybody know what Mario West’s Q/O is worth? I’m trying to figure out Atlanta’s Salary Cap situation. As I have it right now, with Marvin accepting his Q/O and nothing listed for ‘Rio, Atlanta will have a little over $7.6 million at their disposal before they hit Luxury Tax. That seems like plenty of money to lock Siler into a two year contract at minimum with a team option on the third if he works out for us, and enough money to pick up a couple more budget spots (Othello Hunter’s contract was a couple clicks above $440K) or even pay Joe Smith or Ben Wallace a Vet’s Minimum. I know the ASG doesn’t like to spend a lot of dough for players, but there is a ton of room to grow just by my assumptions alone, and to not use the money you have at your disposal to improve the team in either a short term or long term scenarios just seems illogical by my standards. Don’t be afraid to use the money you’ve got ASG: then the fans won’t be afraid to show up to a game on time, or perhaps (gasps for air), even EARLY! Imagine that….

Anakin Joe

Ariose, if we sign Marvin to a contract that results in the team exceeding the luxury tax threshold, don;t we still have to pay the luxiry tax? I thought that we could exceed the salary cap when re-signing our own free agents, but the luxury tax threshold is different. So if the luxury tax line in the sand is $69M, then that may be Sund’s budget. But considering that the threshold is reportedly shrinking next season, he needs to keep any multi-year deals closer to around $65M (not to mention that he could potentially have both Joe and Marvin as UFAs next season with very little wiggle room).

No, just meant that if there is only $12M left to spend, Sund needs to know how much Marvin will take before he finishes shopping. And I think a guy like Joe Smith is definitely looking for more than the bare minimum. That’s why I’m worried about signing him, because he may choose not to wait for the Marvin deal to be final before taking a decent offer from a western team (doesn’t Denver need to add a front court player?).

Allow me to add to the debate about who is more responsible for our inactivity in acquiring a Big, Sund or the SAASG. I definitely remember the SAASG stating that they would allow former GM Billy Knight to have complete autonomy in making all basketball related decisions. Then they stepped in and prevented him from firing Woodson, and thus correcting a mistake he realized he’d made by hiring him.

So, can we really absolve the SAASG of all responsibility for Sund’s inability to sign a quality Big to this point? Remember, it was a power struggle that created the legal problems that’s been going on between the owners.

Astro Joe,

Glad to see you finally understand what I (and others) have been trying to say. Hey, nobody said any of us have to agree with how things are done. I don’t even agree with all of it. I only asked that you consider other possibilities as explanations for how they have gone. Do you think I’m any happier about the offseason results where our frontcourt is concerned, than you are? I’m not. Trust me, I do NOT want us to go into the season with a supposedly rejuvenated RandMo (sorry RandMo, but I gotta see the full product before I believe you’ve completely divorced Wendy), a bunch of mini-campers, and somebody that nobody else wanted (and with good reason).

You know how you say you see the warts and problems, but are pleased with the end results? Same here. I see where we need to improve certain things. I can see where we have not done so, so far. But I also am happy that Sund made a backcourt move that helps, rather than hurts us, and got two key free agents back in the fold quickly.

I hate seeing all those good big men go to other teams, and not ours. But then, I’m also used to the rich getting richer.

Well, I was hoping you’d have an idea about a trade in August…..at least it would be something else to talk about. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Maybe Sund will pull another stunt like he did last year, when he yanked Flip out of the air in the 11th hour. You never know. The season wasn’t over until we played that 82nd game. The offseason isn’t over until the season starts (more or less).

Ariose (I wish I knew how to bold one word only), Marvin has the same agent as Childress. And I can’t help but wonder if thwy are purposely dragging their feet while the quality bigs sign with other clubs. Marvin has a very nice back-up plan, $7M for one year. And with no other SFs available to adequately fill the position, they do have some leverage.

Ken Strickland,

The way I see it, you’re right. Ultimately, all signs eventually point to the owner or owners.

To me, it’s about responsibility, and I refuse to give in to any other idea. GMs broker the deals. They are the ones who make the calls to other teams. They deal with agents. They, and their staff. Owners don’t do that, but they DO sign off on, and allow all the deals that come into play. They are responsible for what GMs do.

I hate to pick on Isaiah Thomas, but look at many of the moves he made. Dolan let all of that happen over the years. Surely Dolan could see that his team was a perennial loser. How could he NOT? Sure, Isaiah made the moves, but Dolan let him do it…. YEAR AFTER YEAR . It is utter foolishness to completely exonerate Dolan. Eventually, he got a clue, let Isaiah go, and brought in Walsh.

My point to any who don’t understand it (and I know this isn’t you) is that sure, GMs are to be held accountable for their actions. But who is holding them accountable? Obviously the one or ones above them. The party that owns everything.

All snide, smart-ass remarks aside, they get a share in the blame as well. Funny, who was held responsible for Rich McKay’s mistakes with the Falcons? Rich Mckay. Aaaaaand….Arthur Blank, who hired him. Who fixed the problem? Arthur Blank. Responsibility. Now sure, ol’ Artie could just stroll down the street and say that it was all Rich’s fault, but who hired Rich? Precisely….

If you own a restaurant and hire a guy to manage it for you, do you not hold him responsible for the restaurant? What if the food sucks, the place is dirty, and revenues are decreasing year after year. What do you do? Wring your hands and say ” oh if only this guy managed this place better, all would be right with this world?”

If Sund is screwing up, then his bosses should cut him loose and get somebody who can get the job done. Strange, I thought we had this conversation before. Only then it was Knight….

Big Ray

OOps. Well, the symbols never showed up. Basically, you are using the “less than” symbol ( ) right after it. To unbold, after you’ve typed the word or words you want in bold, type the “less than” symbol again, followed by a slash, the word “strong”, and then the “greater than” symbol. Whatever word or words are in between the “less than”, “strong”, “greater than” AND “less than”, “slash”, “strong” , “greater than” will appear in bold.

Same can be done for italics using “em” and the same set of greater than and less than symbols (and the slash symbol for closing it off).

Ray, I still disagree with the ownership’s role in the roster. If Sund is waiting for free agents or other GMs to “make the first move”, then we are at the mercy of the next proative offer. And if Sund failed to negotiate some autonomy when he joined the team all of 24 months ago, then what was he thinking? What will be interesting, is if Sund doesn’t have the authority to sign someone like Chris Wilcox to be the 8th player at $3M/year, will they give him the right to hire a new coach when Woody’s contract expires next summer? Seems like a coaching hire is a little more influential than finding a serviceable bench player.
