Vacation visions

Might a Smith family reunion (of sorts) be in the works for Joe and Josh (no relation) this season with the Hawks?

Might a Smith family reunion (of sorts) be in the works for Joe and Josh (no relation) this season with the Hawks? Time will tell. The Hawks are working on it, though.

THE OPEN ROAD - I’m not supposed to be here right now.

Seriously. I looked it up. Vacation is meant to be “leisure time away from work, devoted to rest or pleasure.”

But the phone doesn’t stop ringing because you want it to (next time, we all need to go on vacation together … or at least at the same time).

After being off the grid (mostly) for an entire family reunion weekend, I’ll admit that I’m a bit foggy on some of the details about what went on in Las Vegas for Josh Smith at the USA Basketball mini-camp and just about any other hot debate that’s gone on around here the past few days (and for the record, I’m told that despite a tepid performance in Saturday’s scrimmage, his time with the USA B’ball folks was a rousing success because it allowed quite a few people that weren’t familiar with him other than what they’ve seen, heard and read to get a much better for feel for him as a person and player).

But I do have some thoughts about a few other things, namely the Hawks’ mini-camp from last week, the state of negotiations with Marvin Williams and the Hawks’ continued pursuit of Joe Smith. So if you’ll forgive your host for leaving the party for a few days (technically, I’m on vacation until August – just in case Wifey decides to check the blog and see what we’ve got going on), here are some of my vacation visions:

JOE SMITH probably didn’t realize he had multiple stalkers until he left Atlanta Friday. That’s when the Hawks’ full court press for the veteran free agent’s signature shifted from face-to-face to long distance. Well, mostly long distance. The Hawks do have a secret weapon in Smith’s Phoenix backyard. Mike Bibby’s basketball royalty in the Valley. And he’s one of several Hawks working hard on the recruiting trail to bring Smith into the fold. Zaza Pachulia knows Smith well from their time together in Milwaukee and said he would use all his Euro-charm (at lunch Friday and beyond) to make sure Smith was aware of just how much he is wanted and needed by the Hawks. All that said, major work must be done to secure Smith’s signature on a contract. It’s not secret the Hawks aren’t paying the same rate for backup bigs that some other teams are (for example, Chris Wilcox got cash – $6 million over two years – in Detroit that he never could have from the Hawks. Same goes for Drew Gooden and the reported $4.5 mil he’ll bring in on a one-year deal with the Spurs).  So they have to find ways (PLAYING TIME!!!!!!!!!!) to lure the kind of players they need to help bolster their cause. It probably helps that, in a summer marked by taking care of in-house business (home grown free agents), Smith is the first player outside of the family that the Hawks actually courted. Again, there is major work still to be done on this front.

YOU WERE WARNED THAT THINGS between the Hawks and Marvin Williams would drag out this summer. I wasn’t joking. Nothing has changed. The sides remain on opposite sides of the restricted free agent street right now. I know that other outlets reported that the sides were “close” and all that, but it’s just not true. The sides are talking. And they’ll be back at it this week. Anyone that sees an end in sight has X-ray vision, because I wouldn’t be surprised if things lasted deep into next month. Look back at the Hawks’ dealings with many of their own players in the past (I know Mike Bibby and Zaza coming back as quickly as they did had you juiced but that was out of the ordinary for the Hawks). It usually takes time, especially for restricted free agents.

JEFF TEAGUE is going to make a lot of people forget about the disappointing saga that was Acie Law IV’s tenure with the Hawks. Teague did more than just turn heads during the Hawks’ mini-camp last week. He sparked conversation about point guard play I hadn’t heard in my time covering the Hawks before last week. “He did some things as a young point guard that we hadn’t seen on our practice floor since Chris Paul and Deron Williams were here for predraft workouts,” one Hawks assistant coach told me last week. That’s as strong a statement as I’ve heard from anyone in the Hawks’ camp regarding a young point guard. While they all agree that Teague has plenty of polish that can be applied to his game, there is no debate about who or what the Hawks expect him to become. “I can’t wait to see him in training camp,” Randolph Morris said. “I think he’s going to give people fits with his quickness and his ability to get to the rim whenever he wants to. That’s going to be fun to watch.”

OBSERVATIONS ABOUT A FEW OTHER GUYS that stood out (for various reasons) during mini-camp:

- Othello Hunter was more impressive than any other player in camp, after Teague. His range on his jumper has improved dramatically. But we all know that his chance at making a dent in the Hawks’ roster and playing rotation depends on his ability rebound, defend and provide the hustle plays required of frontcourt journeymen in the NBA. The improved shot is an added bonus. I’d have him locked up on a two-year deal right now. If he keeps improving, someone is going to get a steal.

- Garret Siler’s stock with fans and media types can’t get much higher. He’s become something of a phenomenon around these parts, thanks to some serious hype and the big fella backing it up with strong performances in the Las Vegas summer league and last week. Siler’s raw and would be a super-sized Lunchable for superstars like Dwight Howard, Shaq and Pau Gasol, not to mention brutes like Kendrick Perkins and Brook Lopez. I know you want to believe that he’s the he’s the answer to the Hawks’ big-man problems … but that would mean all 30 teams missed on the guy, twice for some teams, on draft night.

- Randolph Morris has shed the kind of weight all of us “bigger” guys would love to be able to shed. And he did it organically, which makes it particularly impressive. He had his moments during mini-camp but I’m not sure he blew anyone (in charge) away with the work he did. I don’t know what he has to do to make a move up the Hawks’ rotational food chain, though he is under contract for this season, which has to help. But the fact is, even with all the work Morris has done, the Hawks are still hunting reserve bigs.

- Frank Robinson did it again. He showed up. Played his guts out, literally. And his reward, like that of most guys in his predicament, will probably be an invite to training camp. Robinson is the kind of guy that will always make training camp interesting because he’s fearless and is skilled enough to make you wonder why he’s not on someone’s NBA team? He won’t make the Hawks’ roster this season. But I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the middle of the action during training camp.

- Yoroslav Korolev was supposed to be a bust. When he crashed and burned with the Los Angeles Clippers (they made him the 12th pick of the 2005 draft), he joined the ranks of Darko Milicic, Nickoloz Tskitishvili and Fran Vasquez on the list of worst ever Euro-lottery busts. Korolev was just a kid when the Clippers drafted him but he looked grown up last week. He was much better than I expected him to be and showed off a nice shooting touch from long distance. He’d be worth keeping an eye on for the future.

- Brian Hamilton surprised me as much or more than any player in camp. I honestly wasn’t aware of him at all before last week. But mini-camp is a showcase for under the radar players like Hamilton, a smooth 6-6 swingman that impressed on both ends of the floor. His defense is what made him stand out. Yet he showed plenty of offensive ability and a nose for the ball on both ends of the floor that would make Mario West jealous. He’s another guy that will surely be in someone’s training camp pushing someone under contract to the limit.

Those were just some of the guys that made lasting impressions on me. Hawks coach Mike Woodson remarked several times that it was by far the best (rookie/free-agent) camp conducted during his tenure with the Hawks and I have to agree that it was the best I’ve seen in my time dealing with the Hawks (I missed his first one, when Josh Smith and Josh Childress were rookies). But there wasn’t a single player in town last week that didn’t belong on that floor.

IN CLOSING, I’d be remiss if I didn’t give my man Solomon “Solo” Jones a proper send off here. One of the truly unique characters to grace us with his presence the past three years, Jones is moving on this week to a two-year deal with the Indiana Pacers. Solo is moving on at a time when the Hawks could use a big or two like him, which makes his departure for Indiana all the more perplexing. After all, he was a restricted free agent, due close to a $1 million if he had signed his qualifying offer (the QO was rescinded so he would be allowed to sign with the Pacers without any interruption). I needed an explanation and Solo provided one last week. “The Hawks kept it real with me,” he said. “They told me that my role was going to be pretty much the same as it was last year, and that I wouldn’t have a chance to move up and get more time unless somebody got hurt like last year. And I realize that’s just the way it’s going to be with Josh and Al [Horford] and Zaza already in place.  It’s cool. I get a chance to go somewhere else and try and start over and see if there’s a chance to have a bigger role. The Pacers want me up there right away to get to work and that’s a good thing. I’m looking forward to the opportunity. But I appreciate the Hawks keeping it straight with me and not trying to sell me something that they couldn’t deliver in terms of playing time and opportunity.”

If it’s good enough for Solo, it’s good enough for me.

1) EVERY team needs a 3rd guard

2)I have to disagree about Lou, I’ve been watching him play this summer. I think he’s gonna suprise some people as well. It’s like with flip, he’m more tame as a PG than as a SG. I think that was Lue’s problem, bad judgement from the SG position. Billups had the same problem when he first entred the leauge until he got with Flip Saunders and started playing PG exclusively.

Average/undersized SG’s make for Above Average/Dominating PG’s…..ou just need the right coach to reel them in.

Ariose,

A few things…

1) I really can’t think of too many undersized shooting guards who have made more than mediocre point guards in recent years except Billups and Arenas. And I would argue that Arenas still isn’t really a PG.

2) Lou Williams is on the short side even for a PG…that 6′2 listing is very generous. I’ve stood next to the man. I’m 6′2. He’s no more than 5′11. I guess he’s just following in the Iverson tradition with regard to his height…

Anyway, being undersized for a PG means that he won’t have the edge that Billups did as far as shooting over defenders. Add to that the fact that the dude can’t shoot all that well to begin with…

3) The Sixers played him plenty at PG over the past 2 years. And it was very hard to watch. They tried some sets with him as PG alongside Green early in the year, and it was bad. So most of the time after that, they never put him out on the floor except with either Miller or Ivey. Yup, that Ivey. Most of the time that Williams and Ivey were on the floor, Ivey ran the play.

I feel pretty safe predicting that he’ll be mediocre at best and an unmitigated disaster at worst as PG. To be blunt, if a coach would rather have Royal Ivey initiate the offense than you, you’re not ready to start.

Ball Don’t Lie reports, among other things, that unrestricted free agent Leon Powe is recovering ahead of schedule, could be ready by November, and might sign with Cleveland. I’ve already said this, but whoever signs him is getting a hell of a bargain, and the Hawks could really use him off the bench.

Najeh,

That’s good news for us if it’s true, because it would take the Cavs out of the running for Joe Smith. And to be honest, we need a veteran PF/C more than a pure PF who is coming off knee surgery (and isn’t that the second time he’s torn his ACL?).

JJ should be lucky he’s a guard.

Because next year, with Jamison and Butler likely to play well, he would never make it as a forward. Hell, Joe might not even make the team next year if he has another lackluster season of 20 ppg scoring and 0 leadership

Nire, You see him play all the time so i’ll defetly take your word for it.

As for his height, I’m 5′11 1/2 and Lou has a good 2-3 inches on me for sure. I bet you’re taller so he just seems shorter lol. But he’s at least 6′1

Hey guys. If we can’t sign Joe S, what do you think about Steve Novak? He’s 6′10″ and shoots real well. He’s a 44% field goal shooter and a 41% three pt. shooter. Don’t foul him. He shoots 90% on ft’s. I don’t know if the Clippers will match or not. They made a QO for a little over 1M.

Ha…fair enough on both counts Ariose. Height is something else I’ve been wrong about. I played alongside a friend of mine for two years thinking he had 2 inches on me. Then he goes and tells me he’s 6′2. He was just so broad that I assumed he was taller. Maybe I had the inverse perception problem with Lou…dude’s so skinny that I underestimated his height.

If he’s 6′10″ and shoots 44% we don’t really need him. Better off in Toronto or NYC. I still don’t get the hold up on signing Siler. Come on Rick. I know you like to move slow but you got to make this happen.

5. Atlanta Hawks (47-35)
This spot was reserved for a second Western Conference team (perhaps the Jazz or Hornets). But last year’s gap between the top nine and the bottom six in the West makes two changes hard to fathom.

A more likely scenario is the Raptors and Wizards returning to the postseason, and either the Sixers or Pistons hanging on. In that case, either the Bulls or Hawks would have to slide out. Chicago lost Ben Gordon, but will be getting Luol Deng back from injury and will have Derrick Rose with a year of experience under his belt. Further, the experience of taking the Celtics to seven games should help them like it did the Hawks a year earlier.

Atlanta could be set for a letdown. They clearly improved last season, but just aren’t ready to take the next step. The addition of Jamal Crawford (who has never made the Playoffs in nine seasons, by the way) could make things easier on Joe Johnson, or it could create a chemistry problem. And they’re still playing Al Horford at center.

So good ol’ John Schuhmann thinks we won’t make the playoffs. I can just see the joy of a thousand “I told you so” comments perculating in the minds of some of our regulars… :) .

Based on the closing remarks, Clyde, Astro Joe, and KevinA will be set for a year of bragging rights and a thousand I told you so’s….Heh….

;)

Big Ray

I agree that we need to sign Siler.

I looked at NBA.com and saw that John Schuhmann thinks we may not make the playoffs this year. Heh. His closing remarks indicate that the key issues are not being ready to take the next step, playing Horford at center, and the addition of Jamal Crawford.

I would imagine some of us who have a particular affinity for those issues would feel very much vindicated if this comes to pass, and for those exact reasons. If that’s the case, then vindication trumps winning/losing, but whatever makes the boat float.

However, I take issue with one thing he mentioned in particular. We were the 4th seed last year. It would seem to me that “taking the next step” means going for elite status (top 3 in the conference). I would think there is a bit of a margin between that and simply not making the playoffs. Is he trying to say that this year will show that there is very little difference between the 4th and 8th seeds? When it comes to win totals, I’m not willing to believe that based on last year’s results, though playoff performance certainly was different than win totals would have indicated (i.e., the Bulls looked like they were for real instead of last minute additions to the dance, and the Pistons looked like they never belonged).

Sorry Mr. NBA writer, but I’m not going for that.

Is Nique going to be back in the booth next year? I don’t know if I can handle another year of “heat check” and getting players names wrong. I know every once in a while a name will be pronounced wrong but it was times where Nique wasn’t even in the ballpark as far as getting a players name right. I would much rather have the stinger.

I agree, cp. There’s a difference between understanding the game as a player (which Nique obviously did) and being able to express that understanding in words once you’re no longer a player (which Nique really, really can’t). They need to just stick Nique back in the PR office.

Although I do have to admit, it’s somewhat amusing to listen to Nique on the air. Kinda like the same amusement that Cubs fans got out of hearing Harry Caray sing the national anthem…

Regarding Siler, the issue doesn’t seem to be whether we need to sign him or not. Since he has received multiple invitations to veteran training camps from Minnesota and the Hawks according to link sources, the real question, right now, is which training camp will he choose? The assumption is that his selection will express his desires. Once he makes his decision and hopefully it is in the ATL, than Hawksville should scream for a signing. I just hope Sund and Woody have done their part in demonstrating some love to the big fellow and selling a plan for a successful future as a Hawk. We shall see.

There is absolutely no reason for anyone to believe that if a player is creating chemistry issues that he won’t be sitting in the Tony Delk Memorial Chair at the end of the bench.

What a hater.

I agree that we have a leadership problem, despite what some of you may say, WE DON’T HAVE A LEADER ON THIS TEAM. WE HAVE A BUNCH OF SUB-LEADERS, BUT NO TRUE LEADER, AND NO ONE SEEMS TO WANT TO STEP UP.

I don’t agree with his theory about our chemistry. This team has great chemistry. It gets even better from year to yearas players mature and imporve their skills.

KevinA

Ariose, I think you are confusing leadership with dominate players. We have to do a team thing to win. JJ tries to take over at times, sometimes good but most times bad. We have gained more wins with the addition of Bibby and his low turnover ratio and the improvement of our young studs. Flip played great and Evans was as our 7&* man on the bench.

As Josh, Marvin, Al and ZaZa get more touches the lines of leadership will be more blurred but I still expect more wins barring injury. Good teams like the Spurs hit the hot hand. They play whats working best. When they are healthy you never know who is going to be the star of the game – and they don’t care. Sign of a mature team. They don’t have a star who has to have 25 shots every single game like Labron or Kobe.

Ray I will take NO pleasure in anything less than 45 wins (unless we are devestated by injuries like 3 years ago).

NO pleasure comes from less than 53 wins with devestating injuryies. We are better this year. Our young guys will be better this year. I see no reason to lower expections. I would sign Flip just in case Crawford under performs. If he over performs maybe we can trade him for an Odem type or if JJ wants to much, he would be plan B. I would not offer JJ more than 12 mil unless he has a better year. Better year as in no more iso and ball movement. He needs to shoot within the team scheme, not play one on five.

KevinA, good stuff. Frm a playing standpoint I agree that It’s Joe. But from a vocal standpoint and just getting on your teammates in order to hold them accountable, i’ve really inly seen Josh and Al do it.

Teams like San Antonio don’t really have vocal Leaders for players right now, but their coach is the leader and they all know it. He says what needs to be said. I just don’t think we have that.

KevinA

Ray, I agree there is plenty of room between 4th and third seed. A seven game series for one. 52-55 wins for another. Not being blown out for a third. Chicago did not advance but showed great improvement. I don’t know if we could have beat them.
We have a rare chance for young kids get better and stick together. Proof is in the pudding but this could and has every chance to be a very fun/good year. We see all the faults of the Hawks, I can’t think of a player that some blogger wants to trade. At the same time we got 46 wins and won 4th seed. At the same time the east was much improved against the west. Maybe we are better than we think?
