Childress is headed back to Greece

Josh Childress is headed back to Greece for a second season.

Former Hawks swingman Josh Childress is headed back to Greece for a second season.

Josh Childress is going back to Greece.

The former Hawks swingman said he is returning to Olympiakos for the 2009-10 season and will not opt out of his contract and return to the NBA.

“I still have some unfinished business to tend to,” Childress said by phone early Tuesday morning. “I definitely have unfinished business in Greece.”

Childress had a Wednesday deadline to notify Olympiakos of his intentions to either come back for a second season overseas or return to the NBA.

A restricted free agent this summer, Childress said his representatives spent the past two weeks in discussions with the Hawks and several other teams about potential sign-and-trade deals that would have allowed him to return to the NBA this season, but could never get the Hawks to sign off on any of the proposed deals.

“At the end of the day it’s a business,” Childress said. “I was in basically the same situation last summer. Again, it’s a business and you have to treat it as such.”

Childress, 26, left for Greece last summer in a groundbreaking move for a restricted free agent of his stature. He signed a three-year, $20 million deal with Olympiakos, a deal that included an opt-out clause at the end of each season that would allow him to return to the NBA.

The sixth pick in the 2004 NBA draft, Childress spent his first four seasons with the Hawks. He averaged 11.1 points and 5.6 rebounds 285 career games with the Hawks, including 67 games as a starter. He finished sixth in the voting for the NBA’s sixth-man award in his final season with the Hawks two years ago, the franchise’s first playoff season in decade.

The Hawks own his NBA rights and will continue to do so, provided they extend him a qualifying offer again next summer. His status as a restricted free agent allows the Hawks to match any offers made to him by other NBA teams.

Milwaukee and Charlotte made strong plays for Childress. He made a visit to Milwaukee the first week of the free agent negotiating period. But in the end, none of the deals worked out.

“When I left Greece to come back [here to the U.S.], I had it in my head that was going back to Greece no mater what,” Childress said. “Then when I got home and had my feet on the ground for a couple of days, I really wanted to explore my options and see what was out there. It was 50-50 from there.”

Now that he knows he’s going back to Greece, Childress said he can finish what he started. A sports hernia injury sidelined him for a long stretch of Olympiakos’ season. Still, he returned in time to help his team to a spot in the Euroleague Final Four and a spot in the Greek League championship series.

“My team did well, but there’s no question, I didn’t have the year I wanted to have,” Childress said. “And with that being said, I have some serious work left to do in Athens. That was part of my decision to go back, as well.”

It helped, he said, that Olympiakos made it clear that they wanted him back for another year.

“They let me know as soon as the season was over that they waned me back,” he said. “With me not having the best year I could have, it says a lot about the commitment they made to me that they didn’t hesitate to let me know that. It shows me they have a lot of respect for their players.”

Wishy Washy.

Now everyone has been applauding him for going for the money. But apparently that wasn’t enough for him. Apparently he has unmet emotional needs as he wanted to be pursued, needed to feel love from some team other than the Hawks.

Apparently he was the twinkle in any team’s eye, so he comes to the conclusion that he has “unfinished business” over in Greece. What must his teammates be thinking? Not only was his play somewhat underwhelming, he then turns around and decides he can be had if some NBA team..other than the Hawks…really really wants him. Not exactly a firm commitment to his “groundbreaking” move to a second rate league.

I still sat he was just trying to see if he could stick it to the Hawks. At the end of the day, this is really all about his bitterness. I guess this will become an annual occasion….”What will Josh Do? Well see ya next Summer champ, we’re looking for players who want to be Hawks!

Same goes for Anderson. Does he want to be a Hawk or not? Time to find out and act accordingly. The pool of big men that can help the team is starting to dwindle.

Go Hawks!!

Josh Childress is a good player but not a starter and there lies the problem; he wants starter money. He is not big enough to be a small forward and he doesn’t shoot well enough to play the 2 so his only roll is super sub. An energy guy of the bench that can generate offense with his speed. There are many players like him in the NBA…

At least this will bring closure to any ’sign and trade’ ideas that fans have suggested involving Chillz. The Hawks can also set their attention now on signing Marvin and determining who they want as the 2nd big man off the bench (Solo or a TBD free agent). This person has to be prepared to get many DNP-CDs so we have to determine how much we are willing to pay for that along with the person being mentally prepared for it. I see 5-10 minutes/game at most for this slot.

What the F@*k is Chills deal?!?!? They offered him a very reasonable contract last year. They would have matched any contract he got from another team, just like they did with Josh Smith. What the hell does he think he is worth?!? No team is gonna pay him anymore than the Hawks will. He talked to 2 teams!! And they didnt offer a contract!! So he goes back the Greece and obscurity?!? He will never get more money in the NBA than what the Hawks would have paid.

Be cool with the foul language d starks, ha, I don’t want the blog to eat your posts. And I think this was the wise choice by both sides. Childress stands to make more overseas than can earn in the NBA. And the Hawks have to get the proper value for the asset that Childress is, rather than taking back someone and/or something of lesser value.

This is, in fact, just business.

Oh well I guess we are stuck with Marvin “Duck” Williams. Jarrett Jack is really signing with the Raptors for less money than what we paid Mike Bibby and he can actually play DEFENSE. WOW! Oh well, I guess Rick (who has been in the league for 30 years and haven’t won anything as a GM)Sund knows what he is doing. After all, he just wants to “CLOSE THE GAP” on the teams that finished in front of us. With a front court that has players such as Josh, Al, and Marvin we have the most UPSIDE and POTENTIAL of any team. I can see why Sekou and Mark Bradley love this Rick Sund so much. As matter of fact let’s take Jeff Schultz advise and give Rick Sund a RAISE!! These are the best DELUSIONAL sports writers in the world. They have such HIGH STANDARDS!!

GO HAWKS! (back to the playoffs where you will either be eliminated in the first or second round, but hey if you win say 3 more games in the regular season, that would make 50 and you will be an ELITE team because according to your great GM).

Chills back in Europe is the best solution possible excluding a sign and trade where the hawks get real value in return (Hickson – great, Bowen – no thanks). Critical is that we still retain his rights in the future, think of the value as a mid to late 1st round pick in the future. Anyone who thinks Chills is a marginal or bench talent doesn’t follow bball closely, he just got stuck in the wing player log jam created by poor drafting.

Marvin Williams is just a taller, less accurate, Steve Kerr. Set shooter (don’t call what he does a “jump” shot) who can’t create his own shot, and instead relies on others to draw the defense and kick to him for a set shot. He’s less effective than Kerr because he doesn’t know how to move without the ball.

If I may go back to the last blog… Petro or Mikki Fikki Moore? Petro is probably a little better than people think, he can make open jumpers. But he is not a banger and is more Mark Blount than Tyson Chandler. My left big toe weighs more than Moore and is probably a little smarter too. I watched him with the Celtics and he stood out like a sore-thumb. Because of his hustle and athleticism? No, because he appeared to have the lowest b-ball IQ on the team. If Wilcox or Gooden are out of our price range, surely Foyle, Magloire or Theo would be affordable. It looks like finding a quality big man for the Hawks will be like it was for the Braves to find quality relievers during many of the pennant-winning years. And in both cases, it comes down to not amking those areas priorities in the team’s budget. Instead, Sund prioritized the back-up lead guard. Just as I suggested a few days ago.. Crawford & Petro/Moore or Flip & Bass/Big Baby/Joe Smith? To me, a no brainer choice.

I think Sund would like to build a championship team, but it is a very difficult thing to do. Some teams get a huge headstart when they are able to land a Shaq, Howard, or LeBron in the draft. Other teams always have an inherent advantage due to their large markets and unlimited resources. The Hawks are better off than most teams in the league, but what would have to happen for them to reach the next level.

– Bibby would have to remain steady, and Teague would have to show that he can be a star at the point.

– Nothing against big Al and Zaza, but I’m on the bandwagon clamoring for a big defensive specialist at center. As I have said before, I was hoping they would try to work a deal for Camby or Chandler — but I haven’t heard any trade rumors. These guys are on the last year of their contracts and their teams couldn’t expect too much in return.
I don’t know if the Hawks could take on that much additional salary without moving some of our current players.

– The ownership issues need to be resolved, and they need to show that they are willing to spend the bucks necessary to compete at the highest level.

– So far, so good on Sund. The jury’s still out on Woody.

seems again ultimately the hawks didnt want to part ways with chills as much as the other way around. two sides of the argument and street, dont see how anyone but a fool could see it otherwise. he is a commodity and an valued one and he is in a system in america that allows free enterprise for contractual employees, even within a union. obama would be proud of him is my guess rather than backing down and taking in less money to pay the government good healthy american taxes. sounds pretty american to me and something we fight for with our forces overseas to assure capitalism withstands outside pressures so we can have our way of life. in other words both sides made a decision, foolish to think otherwise or it is slave labor or communism.

Is Chills going to become the “Brett Favre” of the NBA? Every summer are we now going to say, “oh well, what is Chills going to do? Will he return, will he not?”

Did Chills and Woody have a fallout and Sund has now become the fallguy?

Is it that Woody said I don’t have a space for him so get assets for him?

Is it that the Hawks were upset about how the negotiations went last year and so there is some bad blood there, therefore the Hawks are playing hard ball?

Mr. Sund, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. When Chills left last year it was doubtful then that he would return, certainly to the Hawks anyway, so life goes on and we have to do what we have to do. In the words of Arthur Blank: “We have moved on”.

Ant,

He will be restricted again next year, because the Hawks tendered him a QO. So we’ll be playing the same Chess game next year with Childress. It’s frustrating as a Hawks fan, because we have money tied up (for salary cap purposes) in a player that will not contribute. But I understand the business.

Now that we know Chills/Andersen are not coming over, I hope Sund signs a big man or 2 (Wilcox or Gooden).

Some interesting things concerning the Hawks:

1.You all loathe Michael Woodson, but do you realize with the team assembled, the Hawks could make the playoffs again this year, barring injury, thus qualifying Woodson for atleast a 3yr extension? A three year in a row playoff run, in the shadow of a 10 yr drought, would all but guarantee him a contract extentsion.

2.The Hawks are looking at another 2nd round blowout because the roster has not been strengthened to battle the likes of Cleveland, Orlando or Boston over 7 games. And if the Hawks match up with the likes of Chicago or Philly in the 1st round, they may not even get out of the 1st round.

3.The Hawks biggest chance of contending for an Eastern Conference/Finals Championship will come in 2 years. The big 3, Cleveland, Boston, and Orlando, will be much older and too financially strapped to really add to their base. Atlanta has been very fiscally responsible the past 2 years and they will get their reward in 2 yrs. The Hawks will have the room to resign Joe Johnson next year and they have resigned their key vets, so look out for Atlanta on the horizon in 2011.

Marcus

Sekou,
in your blog you mention that the Hawks will continue to retain his rights, as long as they make a qualifying offer next summer. I thought I read in an earlier blog (or someones post) that next year his free agent status goes from restricted to unrestricted.

Which one is it?

Since he is no longer building up “NBA service time” are his rights similar to if we draft a Euro player who hasn’t come over to the US yet?
Otherwords, his Euroleague time doesn’t count towards NBA service time, so his a restricted FA status ad infinitum until he comes back to the NBA, either to the Hawks or as a sign/trade deal?

Samuel, I agree with you. I’ve seen what Kurt Thomas can do and I will take that all day long, regardless of size. So your boy Curry is down to 330 pounds, huh? I read that he forgot to bring his sneakers to a team workout. Wow!

Ariose, I figured that Acie would struggle with Nellie but he shouldn’t struggle in his third summer league.

Siler has been playing well. The Hawks better sign him immediately. And show some financial guts and send RandMo and his remaining contract to the streets. Put Siler in the “big man project” slot. And send dude to a NBDL team (with a nutritionist).

I am still waiting for Sekou to report on what happened with Andersen. Perhaps one of the AJC columnists who can take sides can discuss why the Hawks keep wasting 2nd round picks on Euro players they apparently have no interest in actually paying a competitive wage to play for the Hawks. How many is that now, over there that could have been domestic pics and in camp over the last few years? Wasn’t it Millsap that was available in the 2nd on year for the Hawks, and bloggers here wanted him, but BK took….

As I stated in a previous blog. This entrepreneur first basketball player last con-artist did just as I expected. What ticks me off more then anything is how some of the Hawks Fan-base keeps sucking-up to this guy and for what? He comes back in town, feeds his ego and leaves. This move makes him a career journey-man for his entire basketball career. It seems as though he wants the Hawks to renounce his rights so he can become a free agent when his Greece contract expires. As a GM, I would do just the opposite; throw his contract in a closet and let it rot for as long as required.

Speaking of RA, he seems to have disappeared. Haven’t heard a word in days now. And while there are times when I disappear from the blog, it’s not usually right after I’ve been slammed for something I posted.

So, with that in mind, I’ll repost something RA said, because the irony is just too delicious:

Here’s what he said on Bradley’s blog:

These are the words of RA:

“Here’s the thing, the great thing about American culture is the ability to express and defend your own opinion, even if it’s dead wrong. (And for the record, I never claimed to be completely right.) And for that reason, it always irks me when someone puts up a post and then runs away instead of defending it or even sticking around for a rebuttle. Downright cowardly if you ask me.”

Speaks for itself, does it not?

Mike

July 14th, 2009
12:14 pm

Please, no Drew Gooden. And let’s not get too excited about Garret Siler. There’s a reason a 7-foot-tall guy did not get drafted even in the second round. Here’s the Draft Express summary on him from the PIT camp:

Siler is an average rebounder and a poor defender because of his obvious physical limitations—he doesn’t move very well and can barely get off the ground. He’ll grab rebounds in his area thanks to his length and hands, but won’t go get many loose balls himself. No one is going to post him up inside the paint, but he’s completely unable to step out and guard players on the perimeter, rendering him effectively useless defending the pick and roll.

The NBA doesn’t look like a very realistic option for Siler, but he was still more than interesting enough to bring to a setting like this for us to see with our own eyes, which is what makes Portsmouth a great place to watch players. He’ll likely make a good living on a half-court team in Europe or in the increasingly lucrative leagues of China or Korea.

here is my 2009/2010 hawks roster.

Guards: Bibby, J. Crawford, Teague, J. Johnson,West
Fowards: M.Williams,Evans,Smoove,Gardner,Gooden or Wilcox or any of the above mentioned
Center: Horford?(really a PF), ZaZa, Siler

That is 13 leaving two open roster spots to fill if someone gets injuried.

Whats your roster look like?

I don’t believe the Hawks can compete for the championship next season but Sund has the team well positioned, financially and having players with reasonable contract, for 2011 and beyond.

Kerr??!! LMFAO
Try Chris Webber. Marvin’s the same age Webber was when he entered the NBA yet Marvin’s got experience. And he can get physical. Remember that hard foul at the end of 2007 Boston series? Marvin’s had injuries, so you haven’t seen his potential. But, rest assured: he’s got HUGE UPSIDE if he can beat the injury bug. Chills, while I like him and his game, is NEVER going to be any better. Marvin, if he stays healthy, will be an All STAR. Mind my words.

And I’ve been around since before Antoine Carr was a Hawk. Marvin reminds me of Antoine. Awkward in his youth but a stud when he matured. Just watch.

Cowa, thanks, I read the Big Ben report but not the one on Tim Thomas. I could see the Lakers trying to plug him into the “Robert Horry” role (on offense at least). My issue with Ben Wallace is that he was talking about retiring a few weeks ago. I’d be fearful that his heart isn’t into the 12-15 minutes that he would be asked to play. Maybe he was just too banged up at the end of the season and may feel differently when/if he feels healthy again. Even if he has lost some of his strength and explosiveness, if his mind and heart are right, I’d sign him in a millisecond because of the linebacker-mentality that he brings to the court (something that we desperately lack).

Good luck to Childress as he goes after that Euroleague title. The Hawks are doing well without him, and he’s doing well without the Hawks. Sounds like those of you whining about his decision are the ones who really have unmet emotional needs. Like Sekou said, this decision makes sense for both parties involved.

And who knows? Maybe he comes back next year and the Hawks can find a much better sign-and-trade option out there than they could this year.

If the Hawks were serious about having a Childress type player to breing off the bench, they should have worked a deal to get Danny Green in the second round. I wonder why Sund didn’t try to get another team to “adopt” Teague for the Summer League? Gerald Henderson (Charlotte drafted player) is playing for another team. cp,

Let me start by saying I am a GT and Jarrett Jack fan. He wont put us over the top, but I was very open to the idea of signing him instead of Bibby, for these reasons:

1) He has size, and is able to defend the PG position (which Bibby does very poorly). With Jack defending the PG position, JJ wouldnt have to guard all the quick PG’s, and maybe Woody would ease up off his switch everything on defense.

2) Jack is also big enough to play off guard.

3) Although his assist numbers are not better than Bibby, he is a better penetrator (in my opinion)

4) He is younger and cheaper. (I think his offer was 4 years, $20 mil).

That being said, Bibby is a better shot maker with swagger, and he fits Woody’s system (whatever that might be) so I am okay with Bibby for $6 mil per year.

I really liked Law too, so I hope he is able to get it going. I wonder if he just sucks, or has he lost all his confidence/swagger that he had at A&M?

wordsmithtom your prediction is making Ken impatient…lol. Write me down as one who agrees with you wordsmith’. Patience Ken and you’ll have your All Star very soon. (What’s that sound is it Rod from College Park?….lol)

I like Marvin regardless of what the opinions on this blog are and I to believe he will prove his worth soon. In the long run he will realize a good ROI. Because of where he was picked (#2), I can understand the anxiety. However, when we lock him up this offseason, in a year or 2 Hawk-history will be very kind to Ric Sund. He will go down as the man who re-signed Marvin and finally Billy Knight will be vindicated although it is taking a while.

The Hawks however, in the meanwhile will be competitive but without some real inside toughness and more power in the paint on both ends of the floor, we will continue to be bridesmaids and as we all know too well, nobody remembers the bridesmaids.

I therefore await Mr. Sund’s 2009 offeason coup de gras!!!

Jarret Jack is not a floor general. That’s why Portland traded him right before they made a playoff run.

I agree that I like Jack’s size and skill set. But he doesn’t seem to have “it” – that ephemeral quality that makes an above average PG into a PG for a winning squad. Bibby has “it.” While not at all a perfect indicator (because there is no such thing in basketball), the “Wins Produced” metric does a pretty good job of tracking the guys who “make things click” on their team:
http://www.wagesofwins.com/AllTeamMid0809.html

Anyway, I’m not at all sad that we re-signed Bibby and let Jack go elsewhere.

Sure, sure sure disappointment is always part of life, but all is not lost. We’ll have a shot at Chills next year. I am sure Chills was not offered the 6 mil a year he deserves. The only reason Marvin is being offered more is because he was picked 2 on draft day. I believe Marvin/Chills are worth close to the same.

The idea of fielding one more smart team player was delayed another year. Now we need to focus on signing Flip in case Crawford becomes a defense sieve and continues to shoot at his normal .404 shooting% Yes we will miss the most efficient swing player the Hawks had in many years, shooting a .573 (among NBA leaders). Sund did not drop Chills and left him on the cap for a reason.

If Crawford does great – fantastic. If not look for Crawford to be gone to sign JJ/Chills next year.

And what we have never replaced was the offensive boards and general hustle he gave us. Not to mention 11 points with ZERO plays called for him.

But I feared all along, as I mentioned to you earlier, that in this economy, he’d have a hard time making it fly. Maybe a year from now some of his anger / scorned feeling, or whatever will be assuaged. There’s still got to be a reversal of feelings before he’ll come back here and I’m not certain of that EVER happening. I’d say a sign-and-trade is the most likely scenario.

Officer Dangle,

You said this: “Can you remember the last time you saw Marvin “Steve Kerr” Williams take the ball to the rim and finish? Me either.”

Maybe you missed this excellent post by Traceman. Here the part that answers your question:

Traceman

July 13th, 2009
1:43 pm

“Many of you guys are funny with your criticisms of Marvin. All he has done is listen to his coach, get better every year and play his role without complaints. I wish everyone on the team would take that approach.”

“When was the last time you saw Marvin finish a play with an ‘and 1.’”

Marvin had 19 “and 1’s” last year in 61 games. JJ had 22 in 79 games. Ron Artest had 17 in 69 games. Stephen Jackson had 14 in 59 games. Jason Richardson had 20 in 72 games. Kirilenko had 18 in 67 games. Heck Garnett only had 16 in 57 games. Marvin can improve his ability to finish but he is not nearly as bad as many would have you believe.

So Officer Dangle, why aren’t you all over Joe Johnson for not finishing since he had FEWER “and 1’s” per game than Marvin?

Maybe you just didn’t watch many games. THAT would explain it.

And I’d have to say that as long as Marvin is keeping pace with KG, he’s not doing too badly for an ever improving 23 year old.

I said the other day that I don’t expect Acie to have much success in Nellie’s system, but I did think that he would play better in the Summer League (before interacting with Crazy Nellie). I talked ad nausuem about how impressed I was in Acie’s first NBA game against Dallas. Very unfortunate that he is headed down that “Shelden path” of having his rookie contract cut short. Why are some posters clamoring for the Hawks to re-sign Flip?? Look at his career and Crawfords…by any fair rendering he is simply a “poor man’s” Crawford..i.e. streaky shooter and scorer…but Crawford is more explosive…can create for others somewhat but Crawford can much better…and both pretty poor on the defensive end…we also now have Teague who also has many of the same traits and probably will need to fight for mintes from Woodson as is…we also have limited resources and those resources definitely do NOT need to be spent on another perimeter player…add some relevant size and defensive post ability…resign and extend marvin who is vastly underrated on this board and call it a summer!

Hello from Athens.
I found this article through twitter and i managed to read almost all the comments posted till now.
I must say that many people here in Greece expected more from Josh, they had such expectations because most of them never saw him play at NBA and judged from his background and money that Olympiakos paid to bring him in Greece.
I cant say i m unhappy with Josh but i m sure that with that kind of money we could have bought someone more familiar with the european style.
Ou coach loves 5on5 game, that means he likes his team to play hard on defense and take full time in offense. Josh apparently couldnt handle that and in combination with his lack of shooting ability he was trapped between other teams guard unable to reach baseline or make a drive to the basket.
I expect from him this year to play wiser and most of all i expect our coach to take advantages his athletic skills and change our playing style to a faster one.

ps: you ll be surprised to see that Josh improved his shooting skills A LOT when he comes back for the NBA.

If it’s true, I’m ambivalent. Hopefully “future considerations” is the right to swap draft picks at some point. Even if it’s not, a second round pick and cash was probably all we were gonna get for him anyway considering that he’s 29, has never played in the NBA, and apparently never plays defense even in Europe. On the other hand, it would have been nice to have a shooting big man around…but then again, I doubt Andersen would have been willing to come over when the best he could probably hope for in Atlanta was playing 10 minutes a game.

Uh…that cuts both ways doesn’t it? David Andersen is one of those 2nd round picks who has not been productive. So you’ll have to excuse me if I’m not too broken up about losing him ;) . After all, if he were a super-stud like Manu or Scola, someone would have brought him over sooner – either the Hawks or else a team willing to give up more than a 2nd round pick for him.

Also, you’re obviously overlooking the fact that probably 80-90% of second round picks never become rotation players in the NBA.

I’m not saying that Andersen will be a bust. I’m making the point that he’s going into one of the few systems that maximize his strengths and minimize his weaknesses.

Cash most certainly does improve the team. Operating revenues, folks. Let’s say it was $1M in cash. That would be the equivalent of 1-2 home games’ worth of operating revenue or, more to the point, 4-5 home games worth of operating profit.

Did nobody else notice that the Lakers sold their first round pick this year? And that several teams sold their second round picks? It’s a tough economy, folks. And Andersen was not gonna be a rotation player here after we re-signed Zaza. Getting a pick and a good amount of cash for him is hardly a bad deal.

I don’t think anyone is arguing what Flip did for this team last year. Crawford is taller, a much more consistent and explosive scorer. He can play 3 positions and is also a playmaker, each of which will take some of the pressure off JJ so he won’t be so spent. I would be happy to have Flip back, but I do think Crawford is an upgrade. That’s me.

I wouldn’t sell the hawks so short. With bringing everyone back we will build on that chemistry that is so important in the playoffs. I think Boston is still the front runner in the East. With Orlando trading Turkoglu, they are really messing with their chemistry, and Vince Carter hasn’t been the most dependable guy down the stretch. Getting Shaq in Cleveland sounds good, but at 37 how much does he have left (assuming he stays healthy). Even so with he and Big Z on the roster they will be a much slower team. Hawks are still young, but getting better all the time and just may shock some people!!

Since 1980, only 8 teams have won an NBA Championship. With the exception of the 06′ Heat all of those teams ran deep in basketball tradition. So for all those who want to doubt what the hawks are doing, take notice that they are trying to turn the hawk brand into a “winning” one. Rather than be one of those numerous teams who blow it up for one shot and fall short, they are taking a more reliable approach. For those who want to point at all the “blockbuster” moves, this is not Boston or LA; and we do not have Lebron James or Dwight Howard. We’ve had success playing a team game and that’s what we are continuing to do. Besides, it takes so much to make it all the way. You have to give it everything and still be lucky. Hawks are just getting a taste of winning after decades of being irrelevant. As long as we keep progressing in the right direction, be happy we have a team to be proud of for once, come on!

Just read the Slam interview with Teague, good piece. Glad to hear what he’s been up to since draft day. Has been quiet on him with no summer league play.

Not losing sleep over losing Anderson, being that he’s never played in the NBA. Even at 29, I still think it takes time to adjust to our league, so it could have been another two yrs before he got comfortable. The cash and future considerations we got for him, I hope it goes towards getting another big man. The market on those is drying up fast!!

Okay, so Chill going back to Greece was not a huge surprise. I really feel kinda…apathetic about the whole thing at this point. Moving right along, and not understanding why some people are really sad, and others are really angry. Oh well. Lost asset for the time being, and maybe for good. It is what it is….moving right along…

So Marvin still isn’t signed. Huh…

We gonna add a couple of bigs, or what? I’m bored.

Ah, so we did manage to turn one overseas asset into something. So who are we going to draft with that 2nd round pick? One of Sergei Gladyr’s teammates mayhaps? Heh heh heh!

Nire,

Yes. Andersen was the Hawks property and they decided that he wasn’t good enough to play in the ATL. Let’s see what he does in a Rocket uniform. Maybe the Rockets have an eye for foreign talent. After all, Scola has played well for them and he was drafted by the Spurs in the 2nd rd of the 2002 draft…

If Andersen turns out to be a real talent then how valuable is that 2nd rnd pick again? It’s not like the Hawks couldn’t use a 6-11 post guy.

This is a bit off topic, but didn’t the league refuse us the injury exception when Jason Collier died. And now Houston’s Yao is only injured and they get 5.7 million? Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Melvin,

Man, once you get your mind set on something, sometimes there’s no changing it. I just don’t get what you think was bad about this deal. As I said, how many minutes you think he’d have gotten here and where those minutes will have come from? And if he was gonna be the next Scola, don’t you think SOME team would have offered more than a second round pick for him? DraftExpress has never had Andersen in the top 10 overseas prospects, and now he’s 29. Not sure what your beef is.

Oh, and also tell me why you think Andersen would have wanted to come here and be our #4 big man. Because, you know, he obviously has some say in the matter.

PS – Not at all saying the trade was affirmatively “good.” Merely saying that from my perspective, this seemed like the reasonable move. The Spurs did almost the exact same thing two summers ago with Scola – they traded him to Houston for a second rounder. RC Buford is probably the best GM in recent NBA history and he basically made the same deal we just made for Andersen – and Buford traded a foreign big man who was younger and WAY more hyped than Andersen is now.

Andersen may turn out to be a good player, and he’s tailor-made for Adelman’s offense. But dude wasn’t gonna come over from Europe to play 10 minutes a game on the Hawks’ bench. I kinda wish there was a way to squeeze more out of him as an asset, but this seems like as reasonable way to “dealing with” Andersen as we could hope for.

We still lack depth at the backup SF and PF positions. Maybe we can trade that new 2nd round pick plus Mo Evans for an upgrade.

Nire,

Hawks as currently constructed do not have a quality backup at PF which I think Andersen could have filled that role nicely and with the league having few true centers, I think he could play some mins at C base on the matchups. Having a playing rotation of 4 bigs is not out of the norm. If he was effective, I’m sure Woody would have found mins for him. At the least, he could have giving us flexibility in the frontcourt…

As for him coming to the Hawks, I think it was more of a money thing than it was a playing time issue…

Nire,

Do you think RC Buford wouldn’t welcome Scola back to the Spurs instead of signing an aging Antonio McDyess (and I like McDyess)? Do you think the Spurs would give the Rockets that 2nd pick back for Scola? If so, than you validated my point…

Melvin, yeah that was sick. Has anyone esle noticed that Josh’s stroke was a lot smoother in HS? Could it have anything to do with his arms and shoulders growing bigger? He has a much more pronounced shoulder release nowadays.

Gald to see that as soon as the Euro scrups(Andy/chills) decided to part ways with the hawks, Sund has already started making moves again.

We should see a lot more action now that that whole mess is taken care of…..for now.

Wilcox? Hollins? Gooden? Gerald Green(800k!!!!)?,Flip?

I guess this now means that Houston will bring Anderson over and pay him what he wants or close to it. They certainly can’t hold an asset that is 29 years old in Europe any longer.

Ariose, I too am looking forward to some more action on the FA front. Perhaps some of the names you mentioned will indeed be in play.
