Dwyane Wade doesn't like to see Mario West dancing! (This fine photo is courtesy of my main man Curtis Compton of the AJC)
MIAMI - I know what the NBA’s slogan is supposed to say.
But after two weeks of great basketball in most cases, and relentless dramatics in others, the only thing that seems to be rising from the dust right now is foolishness.
From griping on and off the floor (more on that in a minute) to tough-guy antics (from as far away as the radio perch) in almost every single series to the continued assault on the game by an army of awful game officials, the playoffs seems more like where ridiculous happens?
At a time when the NBA game should be on full display for all to see, everything else is getting in the way.
I dare anyone that’s watched any of the Bulls-Celtics series to tell me they’ve seen more intense playoff basketball anytime recently. That’s what real lovers of this game deserve to see.
But it’s not happening these days.
Good luck focusing on what should be a frantic and fantastic Game 6 tonight between the Hawks and Heat here at AmericanAirlines Arena. Good luck enjoying yet another entertaining playoff series that’s being marginalized by the news of the weird that seems to be the flavor of every day this time of year.
And in true ridiculous fashion, verbal shots are being fired across the floor before the opening tip (and no, I’m not talking about the faux furor over Josh Smith’s missed dunk at the end Game 5).
Apparently Heat star Dwyane Wade didn’t appreciate Mario West’s version of the Ray Lewis dance at the of the possession just before halftime of Game 5. He lit West up to my man Mike Wallace of the Miami Herald and the rest of the assembled media here after practice Thursday. Here’s Wade going off on our man ‘Rio:
His celebration for his one stop? What is this game coming to? One thing I go back to is something my high school coach always told me. Act like you’ve done something before. He used to hate when I used dunk and pound my chest all the time. He used to tell me to act like I’ve been there before, act like I’ve done it. Win lose or draw, you have to be classy. There are some unprofessional things that they have to take care of. On the court, you show emotion, and that’s great. But celebrating after one stop, that’s funny.
The HP (Hypocrisy Police) might point out that Wade doesn’t seem to have a problem with jumping up on the scorer’s table and pounding his own chest after hitting game-winning shots or staring Joe Johnson down after making a deep shot off the glass in Game 2 or screaming for one of his teammates take Flip Murray out on a baseline drive for a dunk late in Game 5. But you be the judge? But Wade wasn’t done.
He had more to say about not only Wade but the Celtics and Bulls, too: I don’t know what it was a sign of. I was laughing after the fact because I’ve never seen that before. Tony Allen did that the other night when he stopped Ben Gordon from hitting a shot to win the game. That’s what you do. When it’s going into halftime and you stop somebody, that’s a little different. But we’re not here to point out every little thing they do, you know. Who cares? It’s about what we do. And that’s the only thing we can control.
He said all that to point that there’s no bad blood brewing between he and ‘Rio and certainly nothing personal between these two teams (before all but instructing his teammates to stir it up):
First off, I have nothing simmering with Mario. He’s not been a factor in this series. It’s irrelevant to me. I have nothing brewing with him at all. It was one of those games, one of those playoff series. It’s just about do we have the team to come back and fight as much as they’re going to fight. Zaza Pachulia is knocking people out. It’s simple as that. I’m not telling my teammates to knock him out. But when he comes down the paint, just make sure he feels us, on offensive rebounds. We’re not the team that’s playing dirty. We’re the team that wants to play smarter and protect ourselves as well.
THE HAWKS’ CAMP IS FAR FROM INNOCENT when it comes to baiting the other side. It seems Hawks radio announcer Steve Holman has enraged the masses here in South Florida with some of his in-game rants, so much so that the folks at deadspin.com have taken a liking to him.
I’ll let you judge the for yourself whether or not Holman’s calls were out of line. It hasn’t nearly the firestorm in Atlanta that it has here, where it’s been dominating the airwaves. But I imagine it will be one of the underlying story lines from tonight’s game, particularly if the Heat wins and forces a Game 7 Sunday back in Atlanta.
Apparently PETA WANTS A PIECE OF THE ACTION, TOO. The recent flap over Spirit The Hawk prompted this email (below) from the fine folks at PETA.
And we all know that they don’t need GPS to find their way to Atlanta since the Michael Vick story dominated the sports landscape.
PETA didn’t appreciate seeing the Hawks’ Hawk ridiculed after that unauthorized flight before Game 2.
In fact, they don’t want Spirit victimized at all, per the email they sent the other day (they also sent a different letter to Hawks’ part owner Michael Gearon Jr. expressing similar sentiment):
Good afternoon.
After learning that a live hawk used as a mascot for the Atlanta Hawks got loose in an arena, which forced a game to be temporarily stopped, PETA has sent a letter to Hawks owner Michael Gearon Jr. urging him to implement a policy to prohibit the use of live animals at Hawks games.
PETA points out that the bright lights, screaming fans, and loud noises (such as air horns, music, and amplified sound systems) that make sporting events exciting for fans can be terrifying for animals. Appearing at games can be frightening and disorienting to birds and potentially dangerous for birds and fans alike. The hawk is also subjected to the stress of transport to and from games.
“If the Hawks want to increase fan support, they don’t need cheap gimmicks—they just need to start winning games,” says PETA Director Debbie Leahy. “The only place where ‘birdies’ belong in sports is on golf courses, not at basketball games.”
Game 6 can’t get here fast enough for me. I just want to get back to basketball for a little while.
SPEAKING OF BASKETBALL, both Al Horford and Marvin Williams will watch Game 6 in suits. Neither one of the Hawks’ starters is healthy enough to play tonight.
Horford’s sprained right ankle will force him to sit while Williams remains sidelined with that sprained wrist on his shooting (right) hand.

Sekou…another great post. Thanks.
Although, Wade is such a douchebag. I am just starting to hate that guy. His act in front of the cameras were getting old to me before this series even began. And, if he thinks Mario West is going to stop playing hard just because the great D(ouchebag)-Wade is angry, he has another thing coming.
Here’s hoping that we send these clowns home for the summer, in their own arena, tonight. May Josh Smith dunk on someone’s head. May Steve Holman talk smack. And, may D(ouchebag)-Wade be exposed for the joke of a person he is..

I cant lie I thought the Mario celebration was over the top. It is nothing wrong with getting excited but its not like it was a defensive stop to win the championship……. As far as PETA, I have no love for those clowns what so ever.

Zaza is very physical, but he also gets hit sometimes (thats not called). Wade needs to focus on getting his players ready to play.
I hope the Hawks can close out the Heat tonight, because that would go a long way towards shutting up DWade (losing 2 games on your home court), and that would allow the media to take the Hawks more seriously.
For the game tonight, Woody needs to play Mario and Solo, and I hope they bring their A game. And this is the game JJ needs to step up again (like he did in game 5). And Josh needs to keep driving to the basket, no jump shots.

Sekou- Thanks for another great article. You are on a roll my man. I hope you turn your attention to our hometown boys over at TNT. They need a reminder what city butters their bread.
Before this series, I was a marginal Wade fan. He is after all a great player, but he is getting overexposed. Now, I just can’t stand the dude. He is a hypocritical, whiny, punk. I hope Mario does a dance everytime he misses a shot. D-Wade’s thong is too tight.
Dang man, I figured that Horford would miss tonight, but I was hopeful that Marvin would get back in the game. I really like the guy, but he is injuring himself right out of town and a big contract. I try not to complain about player’s injuries, because hey, I don’t have any idea how bad off they really are (speedy is the exception). But Marvin, the team needs you now, if your wrist isn’t broken they PLAY!!!!!
Steve Holman is the man!!! Keep up the great work.
Finally, PETA needs a new hobby, leave the rest of the sane population alone.
Let’s Go Hawks… Let’s finish those clowns tonight

Will the real D Wade please stand up! After the Boston series I thought there was no other player who could go from I respect as a basketball player to I can’t wait for you to retire or fall to obscurity list.(Paul Pierce in case you were wondering). It seems Wade is playing the Pierce with his mouth. Crying trying to pull the media more to his side. Hopefully the Hawks realize that D Wade has absolutely no respect for them despite what he says he has no respect for any of the players, cause if he did he would be more focused.
I am pretty sure tonight is going to be physical. And as long as it is physical the hawks are going to win.
Zaza dirty? H&!! no!!! Zaza just won’t take the pushing and the grabbing that heat get away with and unlike josh instead of taking it out on the refs he is going to throw it right back at you until you step off. Calm cool and then Bam!!! was that my kidney???
Mario West will lay D Wade out one good time before it is all said and done. (tonight)

ay guys I hate to say this……….but when you combine the fact that the hawks have been a rollercoaster up and down team all year…with the fact that miami is
1) in a hole
2) says they feel they got “dissed” and are gonna feed of it
3) has a player like WADE in particular who is gonna feed off of it
4) have already GUARANTEED that they WILL win this game
5) at home
and that Atlanta doesnt exactly HAVE to win this game
Doesn’t this just feel like the typical recipe where the hawks come out the gate kinda lackin energy, not in the game all the way on D and Offense…..and let an emotional, fired up, backs against the wall Miami team build up a big lead…and only decide to play hard in the middle or latter of the 3rd quarter when the lead is already too tremendous to really catch up.
I PRAY that doesnt happen…but all the ingredients just seem to be there for this type of game.
If we can go ahead and finish miami off tonight, that would say alot to me about the direction this team is going in.
However if we play like I think MIGHT happen, even if we win game 7 it’ll still seem like the same ol roller coaster hawks to me.

Both our starting forwards are out? We’re on the road? Facing a team that is in a must-win situation?
I don’t like our chances.
Bibby and JJ are going to need to combine for at least 50 points if the Hawks are going to have a chance to win. The defense is going to have to be stifling and they can’t turnover the ball. In short, they must play near flawless and unselfish ball tonight.
Get well soon Marvin and Al, Sunday comes pretty quickly.

I guess PETA would rather have the bird sitting in a cage at the zoo all day. He has job and it offers some varietty to his probably boring day. Spirit didn’t seemed scared when he got loose in Game 2. PETA needs to get a life.
Big Al will be a loss but I hope the Hawks can still pull it off. Woody should start Solo to keep Zaza as the force of the bench. Lets go HAWKS!

Sekou – did I read that Solo gets the start of Zaza now? I know they like to bring Z’s energy of the bench, but he has been so effective, I would start him.
Daniel – great post about Marvin. I mean, cmon man. Rub some dirt on it and let’s go.
And I could not agree with the collective comments about Wade more… maybe its losing to the “lowly hawks” that brings this out in superstars (see P.Pierce too). But Wade has really been a teenage girl this series.
Let’s go hawks….”Finish him”

real nervous about tonite especially without the boss! i just hope we can somehow keep this one close until the fourth quarter and see if the heat can handle that type of pressure. it will surely take a monumental effort to do this however–we simply have to have some shots go in early on–can’t let them get out to a big lead and if they do–we certainly can’t let them have easy layups and dunks!!!
play tough and don’t get embarrassed–and just maybe the heat fold late. if wade has some trouble scoring–the heat won’t get 80…but if he’s hot we’ll probably be back in atlanta on sunday.
going back to the referees in this series and for the entire playoffs for that matter–can someone please explain to me how violet palmer is working an nba playoff game. i thought the league based these games on merit and there is no way she has the credentials to work a playoff game! i’ve watched her do regular season games and she’s brutal–not because she;s a woman–she’s just not well respected by the players, out of position and let’s the emotions of the game make calls for her…if she works another game the rest of the way–i hope it’s not with us!!!!
go hawks and fight tonight–i’m really sick of the heat! i’ve never liked wade and i’ve always thought magloire was a thug.

i say this because it looks as if the Hawks have figured the Heat out.. they have blown Mia out 2 games straight.. given they switched uni’s with Orlando they can credit 2 wins to lights out shooting. now they are inferior to us and its quite obvious. if we stick to what we have been doing the past 2 games we should be fine.
as far as D Wade… he’s now officially a sucka who flops and relies on officiating for offense.. keep running larger defenders at him Woody… force other players to make a play off the dribble. they’ll keep melting the shot clock. getting bad looks, and missing shots…

I think Marvin is makign the right decision. It’s his shooting hand. I doubt many of you have tried to shoot a basketball with a bad shooting hand. If he can’t help the team he’s a liability. He will be ready for game 7. Better that than coming back too early and hurting the team (ala Josh from 3)

I think the Hawks might benefit from going to a Game 7. It gives Horford and Williams more time to heal, and to hopefully be ready, sooner, for the Cleveland series.
I know, they could lose a game 7 at home, and you don’t throw Game 6 and extend a series just to help get ready for a 2nd round series you haven’t even reached yet; however, with such a quick turnaround, it might help to be at home Sunday, hopefully finishing off Miami, as opposed to being in Cleveland, with a dwindled roster, playing in what has been the toughest place for a road team to win all year.

Bringing my last comment over from the other blog here…
I don’t know about y’all, but I’m actually feeling pretty good about the Hawks chances tonight (even with us being without two starters). The Hawks have momentum and after game 5 I would have said that we could have possibly been in trouble but after hearing all the promises and talking from Wade and Heat players what was already going to be a lot of pressure on them to win this game is already piling on even more.
With all those promises and Wade going on at the mouth the Heat BETTER blow us out. Wade better drop about 40+ points with all the talk that I keep hearing. There’s going to be a lot of heat and pressure on those guys while the Hawks should be able to go in and play loose. Yeah, we’re trying to close the series out tonight, but even with a Hawks loss they get to come back home to where they play well. Now, I’m hoping they don’t keep that in the back of their head because I want to see a win so we can finally be done with the Heat, but I think the Heat putting all of this pressure on themselves could be their undoing. So, that arena better be rocking tonight and the Heat BETTER do what they are saying they are going to do. If they don’t we’ll all get to sit back and laugh in their faces, and I’m hoping…hoping that Smoove have another opportunity to do that dunk in a Hawks win tonight (just so I can get another good laugh at the Heat)

The Hawks’ wins have all come on the defensive end, so the loss of Horford and Williams (while painful) does not necessarily spell big trouble. Yeah, I know we broke 100 last game, but the Heat scored 91 in a game that was largely closed out by halftime. We still have our three leading scorers in Joe, Josh and Bibby; Zaza can clearly hold his own down low and actually has more of a big-man mentality than Horford. I like our chances tonight.

Yeah Eddie, how did that slow the tempo work for the Heat in Games 4 and 5? If you have ever come down and twisted your ankle then you would know that initially it hurts like hades. Mild Ankle sprain or not, at least he was man enough to say after the game that is playoff basketball and you have to be physical. No whining what so ever from Horford. DeWayne Wade and the Heat whine about a missed dunk attempt and a radio announcer.

ZAZA Dirty?/?? He Hustles, fights, plays a man’s game and rarely cries.
O’Neal has taken cheap offensive shots on him the ENTIRE series!!! And has anyone recalled that ZAZa’s black-eye assessed nary a foul!!! Just watch tonight how Jermaine works against ZAZA, and the best part is that it’s so engrained in the Heat’s head that they’re over-pursuing their offensive attack against ZAZA and looking like Chumps at the end of the day.
D-wade can’t decide if his back hurt before or after the game
when to get up after bumping his head — note going to the locker room to sell the fact that he looked like an idiot after the refs didn’t stop the prima donna’s bluff . . .
I could go on — the first two games of the series we couldn’t get a foul called and Coach W led us right –keep attacking, the shots will fall, the calls will come. Bottom line is this is NBA playoff basketball, physical and wired for the MAN who wants it the most. Let’s see you man-up D-wade quite crying and forget the fade-away J if you want to make this game 6 a contest.

Trust me, Holman needs no publicity. You’re a blabbering idiot. You have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what you’re talking about. Quit reading ESPN and Miami Herald articles…stop being so ignorant. Things that I would love to see (but know I won’t)
During introductions, let Mario come out in a Ray Lewis college jersey (since he played at the U), then he does his dance, and tears off the jersey, stomps it to reveal his Hawks uni. Of course we need to prep Steve Holman to be ready for this so he can get into a frenzy before tip off.
The first time Wade touches the ball, every Hawk just point to the basket and let him go in for an uncontested layup/dunk . The next time he touches the ball just go knock him on his rear. Why, because the Hawks are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get…right Forest Gump!?
Have a cartoon version of Spirit the Hawk swoop in and camp out over the Heat basket. Each time they shoot, he pecks the ball away. Afterwards, he could “decorate” the windshield of a PETA person. The poop would spell out Let’s Go Hawks!
At the end of the game, I’d like to see Josh make that between the legs dunk in Miami with us up by 20.
I guess I’ll have to settle for a win tonight.

Mario hardly gets time to play to of course he will get excited, but if wade pumps his chest after a dunk its okay? Pleeeeease grow up miami. Its starting to get pathetic.
And whatever your name is(you know who im talking to), al is one of the toughest guys in the league. wade stayed on the floor 10 monutes but came back out the locker room in like 2 minutes. I just like the fact that Atlanta seems to have figured out the way to deal with D Wade over these last two games. It’s a pretty old formula in sports – if the opposing team is totally dependent upon one excellent player, you go hard after that player. The Hawks aren’t out there trying to hurt anyone, but they are playing hard basketball (like most sports, contact is involved). The Hawks also have enough useful players that they can substitute so that they don’t have too many foul problems. Spread out the foul count on your players while ensuring that D Wade feels the majority of your fouls.
The end result is that D Wade gets frustrated and maybe thinks twice before driving the lane. After all, he knows he has to play for the Heat to have a good chance at victory. Make him a little bit more tentative and then you can better defend his jumpers.
Holman’s mockery of him is just good fun. He says the same thing I say while I’m watching the game. It doesn’t mean I hate D Wade as a person or that I wouldn’t cheer for him if he was on my team. For the moment though he is on the enemy and as such I’ll call him a punk when he acts like one.

Josh Smith WILL GET FOULED HARD this game. Tell him to expect it BUT PLEASE OVERLOOK IT because Jamaal Magloire has been trying to pick a fight with him for the longest and would love to see him get suspended for a Game 7. We cannot afford for that to happen. So Sekou or Micah Hart or anyone who has access to J-Smoove tell him to NOT react to any hard fouls or get kicked out the game.
On a side note: F*** PETA! I cant stand them!!! Argggghhhhhh

Wow, I used to really like Wade. After this series I am tired of his face and I actually can’t wait to see Lebron which I can’t believe I’m saying. Wade is the biggest hypocrite I have ever seen. They guy is a baby and is just as immature as Smith. Except Smith is actually tough and won’t lay on the ground for 10 minutes whining that he has a little knot on his head. Horford sprained his ankle and got up and shot free throws quicker than Wade go up after bumping his noggin. The guy acted like he was paralyzed. I’m seriously tired of watching the Heat try to make us the bad guys in this series. Let’s get this over with tonight. Although I have a weird feeling the Cavs will be much better if we do the tiniest thing wrong against them.
Eric: That link was pretty good and funny. Everyone should read that. Why do the Cavs suddenly think they are unbeatable and are perfect after sweeping the PISTONS! We have beat them this year and there’s no reason why we can’t beat them again. I believe we can at least make this a 6 game series if not 7. Do we win it? Probably not but we can make it interesting.

I hope they can keep their composure because it will take rugged tough hustle, fighting for rebounds. JJ and Bibby drove more last game than they have most of the season. We need more of the same.
Solo, the big question is Solo. You got to figure that O’neil will test him early and often. Morris may end up being a factor before it’s done. 6′11” 275 lbs. Seems perfect for playoff basketball. We have a very good back court that at times is inconsistent. Last game they kicked butt. If they shoot 50% from the field that will take a lot of pressure off the front court.
Miami has no reason not to leave every thing on the floor. This will be the most hostile environment the Hawks have faced since Boston. I expect we will be hit in the mouth several times. I expect ZaZa to show his chin and be unaffected. Lets do this thing.

tune in to the NBA Shoot Around… on espn… Jalen Rose is quite credible… he has been voice of reason; and Jamal “Monster Mash” Mashburn had us as a surprise team in the playoffs to surprise teams even Cleveland…
then id advise Bob and Nique’…
though i doubt Vangundy wont call out bad officiating and award winning theater from Wade…

yea dont wanna forget about solo, dude has stepped his game up, offensive rebounds, a dunk and a couple of easy layups. Wade is on his game, foul or no foul he is very hard to defend, we may have to double this guy at some point, just to stay in the game. i expect Joe to step it up a notch, Josh struggles on the road continue, but i think Flip can pick up the slack being able to create his own shot from anywhere on the floor..

I guess we know who the leader of this team is now. When we need him, Bibby at least leaves it all out on the court. Marvin, punks out, Acie punks out and JJ(our Allstar) aint giving us sh_t once again.
When were debating who to re-sign this summer, it’s pretty obvious to me.

Bibby has been the only consistent hawk this series. JJ has to get back that game 5 swag where he had 15 trips or so to the FT line. Flip is off. Frontcourt is killin’ the team. The refs are consistently bias (that was a charge by wade vs mo in the 2nd q)
Then again as I said in my previous post the hawks is the underdog in this series. The team should thrive on this and keep its composure.

This game is exactly whats wrong with the NBA. One-sided calls and possible hidden adjendas. The commentator said the foul calls will even its self out, here is the problem i have with that. The refs choose to even it out when the game has been determined. Call it down the middle because to me it seems the NBA is gunning for the “clash of the titans” match up with LBJ and Wade. Listen this was the most disheartening game for me to watch as I’m sure it was for ANY HAWKS FAN. But going into Game 7, the Hawks will have to have their leaders step up. Its inexcusable to see Joe Johnson on the court disappearing the way he does. The media has tried to blame Josh Smith for the HAwks’ lack of composure, but Johnson is truly the player to blame.
Johnson lags around the court. If you noticed the game was out of reach after the first couple of minutes in the 3rd quarter. This is when it took the Hawks five minutes to get their first field goal. This would never happen to a team with a superstar scorer on the floor,

I MISSED the 1st Quarter which would have told me the result of this game.
It is a very bumpy ride being a HAWKS fan. This team isn’t mature enough to be truly consistant. From the 2nd half (which I saw) on, they stopped executing and stopped playing with urgency!! Josh missed several jump hooks, and lost confidence. JJ didn’t get in his teams faces and Bibby just doesn’t have the ability to take over a game anymore.
I do, still believe this loss is part of the maturity process, but its VERY HARD to watch.
GAME 7:
———–
The only thing I don’t want to see is Wade walk out during the game hurt! Then I would agree with everyones comments about Wade being a baby! It looks to me that he body hurts a lot more when their losing opposed to winning. The HAWKS have to execute on the offensive side and rebound. I really hope HORFORD is healthy, because we need his toughness. If the HAWKS play together and rebound, it will be a win. But what I really want to see is a team that knows what it takes to win.
GO HAWKS!!!!

JJ was double-teamed when he had the ball but he wasn’t double-teamed when his teammates had the ball. And he definitely didn’t move or put himself in position to take advantage of the defense. He has to be one of the laziest scoring threats in the NBA. He doesn’t run off picks to get open shots, he doesn’t like to run the break and finish at the rim (often pulling up on the break for a 3) and he doesn’t like to post up even though he’s probably the biggest 2-guard in the league.
But hey, I’m sure somebody’s going to blame his lack of effort on the number of minutes he plays. And if that’s your argument, explain to me why he wasn’t doing any of this at the beginning of the season (before he was “overworked”?
But it’s not all his fault…his coach runs the worst offense in the league. And yes, he should be fired!

With JOSH being a PURE SHOOTER he has to get a rhythm early. This is exactly why we pay JOE 14,000,000.00 a year to be a DECOY. If Josh continues to be COOL, CALM, an COLLECTED in these games then we should be OK.

Those who really paid attention to this team this season knew they were going to lose this game. This team does just enough. They win just enough to take the 4th spot. They win a game in Miami they had to win and keep their home court advantage.
We wanted home court just in case there was a Game 7.We are exactly where we’re supposed to be right now.

To the Commissioner of the NBA (self declared BB God)
As a legal (I stress LEGAL before some of those self-called “intelligent fans” start ranting on me) foreigner, after my arrival in the USA, I started to watch NBA games more closely than I could when I was in my home country. The NBA always is pronounced as the best basketball leage (hmmph !! What a misconception I came to realize after a couple of years!)
Fortunately, I arrived with my family (all LEGAL!) in Atlanta – a great city! We arrived in 2002, the year that the Hawks organization announced they would play play-offs or pay the season ticket holders back (part of) their tickets. Anyone knows that they didn’t make it to the play-offs until 2008. But I became a fan of this team. As all of the real fans, I cheered, had sometimes more disappointments then reasons to be proud during those years, but I kept routing for them because I saw a team being build.
Unexpectedly, last year they reached the play-offs as the #8. And I was proud! Unfortunately, because of business circumstances, I had to spend my time abroad, so I wasn’t part of the atmosphere – I only got it second hand from my wife. And now, this year, they rightfully improved to the #4, struggling through ups and downs, but if you have a 4 game advantage on the #5, it is in my opinion well deserved! And it has been a great team effort. Yes we have great players, Joe, Bibby, Al, Marv, Mo, Flip, ZAZA, Smoove (if he plays the plays he has to play – and although I was surprised by his famous try to dunk, he had every right to do it – why the hell did he have to apologize to the Heat??!!), Mario, Solo, etc. And a good coach (I know a lot of you fans don’t like him that much, but you have to give him credit too! He had times he could only do that much – there were times he could have done better, but in the end, he brought us here!)
Over the years, I have seen multiple games, especially Hawks games, but a lot of others as well. To me, it seems more and more that it doesn’t matter so much what the teams bring on the floor, as how referees (try to) lead the game in certain directions. A lot of times, those referees should be called “flagrant misjudgment” calls, the same as they decide on flagrant fouls.
I have read comments the last couple of days (mostly from Hawks bloggers in regard to DWiner’s behavior, but from Mi(m)ami “fans” in respect to Hawks players too) that the players should be playing soccer, the way they act on the floor after being fouled.
My home country is soccer crazy, and so am I, I admit. But at least, the European soccer league (UEFA) and the world soccer league (FIFA) have (almost independent) controlling organisms overseeing their referees! Just as your manager/supervisor evaluates your performance at work. Every game, a neutral observer is present, not so much to watch the game, but to observe AND evaluate the referees’ performances. Of course, there is always room for some interpretation of the rules, and yes, mistakes happen – referees are human, and they need to make decisions on a split second. But nevertheless, if they make the wrong decision, their evaluation suffers and they risk that their ranking goes down, or worse, get suspended for a couple of games, and have to return on a lower level.
I haven’t figured it out yet completely how or why, but the referees in the NBA (and lower levels for that matter, yes even starting in middle school) are certainly NOT independent, as they are supposed to be. Is it because they are protected so much on the court that they feel themselves equal to the status of God? Is it in some cases to hide their pitiful lack of self-confidence out of the uniform, outside the gym or sports arena? Is it a combination of both? Or is it because they are pressured from above? Or is money a factor?
The way the officiating went only one-way in yesterday’s game 6 in Mi(m)ami, I fear the worst: it is the NBA at the highest levels that order the referees how to lead the game! (with bonus pay on top?) After yesterday’s game, I can’t believe those referees took all those bad decisions on their own account. They were puppets on a couple of “steel” strings, guiding the game they way they were ordered to.
Yes, I am a Hawks fan, but I am first of all a fan of the game. Those referees killed the game yesterday. Why!!??? All because of that self proclaimed Super God D(winer) Wade? What else to think of his flagrant foul on Mo Evans in the previous game being overruled by the NBA? I thought the almighty commissioner of the NBA saw the same thing as all sports fans saw: an attempt to stop a basket, badly gone wrong. (In soccer, such an assault would have guaranteed a red card = double flagrant/technical and immediate ejection + suspension for the next couple of games!!) What is NBA’s reaction?? “We revoke the decision!” (because it was our protégé sissy Dwayne Wade).
In my opinion, the officiating in game 5 was one of the better we have had in the series. So what does the NBA do? Yeah, kick them in the nuts because they dared to call Princess Wade back. At the other hand, did anyone notice even their reaction when the situation heated up after Solomon’s foul on D(winer) Wade? Yes, Solomon hit him hard on the wrist, defending the basket. Did anyone notice the immediate retaliation from The Dwiner? Shuffling the ball in Solomon’s face, both hands? (Again, in soccer, Solomon’s actions would have earned him a yellow card (call it a flagrant foul in bb), but retaliating like DW means immediate red = double technical!! + suspension!). Did you notice after that moment whom that poor old ref was protecting with his life (did you notice the fear in his eyes?)? Yes, “Superstar” D(winer) Wade. Is he really such a sissy he needs protection of a 5 something foot tall, 60+ year old referee? And why was he the one being protected? He was the aggressor!!
So it was no surprise that the officials in game 6 would be against Atlanta Hawks. Especially after D(winer) Wade’s press interview. I guess he must have the private number of the commissioner too, so he could W(ad)e(ep) his heart out about those tough and nasty Hawks that don’t respect him or aren’t afraid of him. But can anyone seriously call that show still “real” officiating on the part of the referees? In Europe, it wouldn’t have taken 5 minutes after the game or an official investigation would have started to research the possibility of a pay-out of those refs’s. But not in the NBA, of course not! We all know they are higher than the Holy See: don’t you dare (as a coach or player) to comment on the officiating of a game, even if it was as flagrant as yesterday! Only one explanation: the NBA itself instructed (and the Heat paid?) those refs (because their beloved protégé could loose a couple of 100K if he doesn’t get in the next round).
In European soccer, an organization has the right to object decisions that influence the game (it’s difficult, but at least there is a legal procedure!). Not anything like that in the NBA of course (au contraire, they reverse correct decisions if against a protégé – read: someone that pays them part of his out of NBA commercial contracts). So the NBA rather sees certain teams moving forward, based on commercial interests, rather than to support the real sportsmanship, the sometimes above human effort of athletes to achieve the highest possible, even if that means that sometimes (a lot of times) the slated favorite falls short because of too much self confidence.
I am very disgusted at this point about the officiating in the NBA. I have only respect for a couple, very few, that I know will play their role as correct as possible. The rest are only puppets on very tight strings of a couple of self proclaimed gods like D(winer) Wade, King Lebron James I, Cesar Kobe Bryant, and a couple upcoming princes(ses) more.
I am really hoping that game 7 in this great city of Atlanta will be fair. We all know that mistakes happen, and as we all know, usually, those get compensated. What happened in Miami was flagrant. If I would have been coach Woodson, I would have asked my GM permission to spend 25K in fines (oh, sorry for the Hawks that would have been at least x4, I suppose) and blast the officials. Maybe we finally would get some respect.
Mr. Commissioner of the Great NBA (sorry I don’t call you God) – PLEASE TAKE ACTION!!!
A worried Basketball Fan.

Had to record the game so I could watch it later. It was ugly, about as much so as I expected.
Life without Horford is rough. Life with only a few minutes of Marvin didn’t help either.
And our guys looked seriously gassed. And we have never been good on the road.
Did the officiating suck? Yes, it did, but that didn’t lose the game for us.
On to game 7, where I hope we will at least have Horford. It would also be nice to have just a few more minutes of Marvin (I know, I know, a judgement call, but do you want to win, or don’t ya?).
I’ll say one more thing about this game. Mike Bibby was clearly the best player on the floor for the Hawks. He was the only one with a truly cool head (including the baiting of young Mr. Chalmers). And I watched him PHYSICALLY help keep Josh Smith’s head in the game. Bibby showed a lot of leadership, even on the defensive end of the floor.
Say what I have about Bibby, he has the leadership thing down pat. We need someone, someone else with that quality around here. Our younger forwards have lacked that kind of locker room and floor influence for so long, and it still shows (in Smith more than anybody else) that this is a factor, though not the whole story (again, Smith needs to grow the F out of this..quick).
Every team needs a leader, but most need more than one guy. Bibby is that guy for this team, but he can’t do this alone, and he may not even be here next year. Where do we get such a leader, particularly while our younger guys are learning how to be leaders? A guy like Bibby has shown some of these guys what veterans/team captains are supposed to do. As ugly as this game was, I was impressed with what he brought in this area.
Bibby brought it. No one ELSE has…

Niremetal,
I had to laugh a bit ruefully at your comment on Woody. If our guys look like they’re the least bit tired or banged up on Sunday, you’ll certainly know why. I’m not sure what Woody was thinking, leaving them in when it was VERY clear that 1)We were down 20-something points, and couldn’t buy a bucket to save our lives, 2)Wade was going to get a foul call as long as he showed up in or near the lane with the ball, 3)Our guys were ALREADY showing they were tired AND frustrated, and 4)We’ll need everything we’ve got left in the tank for game 7 (since we clearly weren’t going to win game 6). Don’t know what to say that wouldn’t sound insulting…
And what’s all this noise about offensive scheme? Didn’t you get the memo? All the Hawks have to do is play with energy, and they will win. Energy answers all of life’s little questions.
Got two of your starters on the bench due to injury? You don’t need to modify your offensive approach at all. Just bring more energy. Can’t seem to buy a bucket? Shoot with more energy. Is the defense not letting you get anywhere with the same two (and only) plays you’ve been running at them for six straight games (and most of the year)? Well, run them with more energy. Are guys receiving the ball in every possible situation EXCEPT the one that puts them in the best position to be effective? Who cares? Add some energy, and it works, man. And don’t worry about the charge calls, Flip. That’s just an energy side effect.
Hell, we don’t need a coach. We just need a pile of batteries, a little lube, and some suppositories….

I am travelling and couldn’t follow the match this time, however, I read enough in this blog to understand what happened.
Wade got what he wanted from the NBA which is what we have been witnessing most of these series.
Of the 5 games I watched, 2 had ACCEPTABLE officiating and in both we creamed Miami (1 and 5). The other 3 games I watched had horrible pro-Miami officiating.
Concerned Hawks Fan is 100% right.
Apart from that, I really believe that JJ is simultaneously tired and has not recovered from his ankle strain.
Also, with Marvin and Horford out we really need that J Smoove plays well which is obvious he didn’t (clearly outplayed by Beasley). Without this JJ is a sitting duck since there are no other significant threats apart from Bibby who did his thing but is not enough since games are won inside the paint.
Finally, the apologies for the dunk were a huge mistake. The dunk attempt was stupid, but to apologize under pressure by the midia is worse and a sign of weakness.

Instead of apologizing for some dunk attempt, the Hawks should be apologizing for not being at least competitive. The Heat left their starters in and tried to pour it on in responce to JSmith’s dunk attempt. At any rate, we got punked. Does this pattern of embarrassing road blowouts during the playoffs seem familiar?

Then I’ll be happy to take the Cavs to 6 games before being bounced. The reality is the Hawks are still a work in progress. Rick Sund has to find a way to get us a 5 and a point to takeover for Bibby in the future. We will when game 7 Hawks fans and the Heat know it.

Woah……So much doom and gloom around here. Its going to be really difficult to beat these guys missing 2 starters, but it can be done if we play smart and leave everything on the floor sunday.
D Wade is a cry baby -i agree but, he is also a coold blooded killer when need be and that is why we are in a game 7 with a less talented team. The guy just hits big shots and carries his team. Whatever it takes he does it-get to the line, Score from long distance with guys all over him, Great player–
U cant have your so called leader putting up 13 points in a game of this magnitude- I know he was double teamed but -you have to play at a higher level-13 points is unacceptable…………..
Ive said this for a long time -Joe is not a number 1 option he is what he is -a good complimentary piece. I didnt see any urgency out of him at all and that bothers me- especially for a guy that most think is a max player/face of your franchise. Theres got to be sumone open when there are 2-3 defenders hanging all over Joe- swing the ball to the open man-itz that simple.
Get well soon AL/Marvin u guys are definitely missed -Joel Anthony people…..Joel Anthony???
Why dont we double Wade when he gets the ball like they do JJ -sumthing has to change or we may be “gone fishing ” sunday afternoon. Woody is a defensive coach but we keep getting beat in the same ways ( Wade and his boiz gunning from long range) ……MAKE ADJUSTMENTS
JOSH SMITH…… That yung’n could be so much more, If he would just stop shooting from 25 feet. I know he was 2-13 or sumthing but atleast he was being aggressive and really gave us some effort.

Personally, I think last night was an embarassment. It’s OK to lose a game like that when you have a couple of players down, but not playing hard and making an honest effort of it is really inexcusable.
There’s a diffence between lacking key pieces needd to take that next step toward becoming a title contender, and lacking the killer instinct when you get a lesser opponent on the ropes. One is about team talent and the other is about team character.
On both counts, it’s apparent that the Hawks have issues.

Josh Smith has been known to make that post up hook shot on a regular basis in games in which he plays well. He had a terrible game last night finishing at the rim… there’s not much more to be said.
I am disappointed that he apologized for something that didn’t deserve an apology just because of media pressure. Spoelstra was a fool for getting upset by that and there was no reason for Josh to go ask him to stop crying.

What sort of immature a-hole do you have to be to even believe in that nonsense? How the hell did a “pissed off” D-wade manage to let the hawks win their first playoff game on the road on over 10 yr? How did a “pissed off” off D-wade only manage to hit 11 of 23 shots from the field, and not 23 of 23??? It looked like the only people that the hawks pissed off in this game were the refs.

In case you all don’t understand Woody’s offensive scheme which is the DRIBBLE, DRIBBLE TRIPLE ISO.
Step One: consist of Joe Johnson dribbling for about 20 of the 24 seconds that you have to run a play.
Step Two: consist of Joe, while being isolated, taking on triple teams and either passing to Josh for a open jumper or shooting a FLOATER or RUNNER.

bigdave,
I agree that we have a horrible offensive system. But that’s my point, we don’t create open opportunities for JJ. We all know Woody’s bad at making adjustments, but where are the adjustments from JJ? If he’s watching film, he has to see opportunities to get himself better looks. But he just keeps going out there with the same game plan which is not working.
And maybe he takes the toughest shots because he NEVER changes his game plan. And maybe if he would stop pulling up for 3s on the fast break, he could get some easy baskets. He makes the game harder by being lazy and trying to avoid contact.

The perfect symmetry of horrific shooting between Joe & Josh. They each have 85 FGAs and have made 34 shots. Joe has made 4 of 15 3s, Smith has made 2 of 13 3s. The each have taken 33 free throws. Smith has made 23, Joe only 21. And they each enter game 7 with a 15.5 scoring average. Bibby is about the only Hawk who has consistently shot well in this series. I just thought it was amazing how similar the stats are for Joe & Josh after 6 playoff games.

Big Dave Joe gets to the free throw line and still struggles. Do we need to run him off a pick so he can hit that free throw. It’s true the Hawks offensive is not much of an offense but having said that how many points did Wade score last night off some drawn out play. He got a pick an did the rest or got 1 on 1 coverage and went to the whole. Truth be told the Heat are throwing double teams at him not because he is playing well but because he does not handle pressure very well and they know it affects his confidence (being Debowed). I’m about ready to give Joe a blanket and name him after that Charlie Brown character.

atlrayzd,
the reason why the heat are double teaming Joe is because they can’t defend him 1 on1.. thats is a tough assignment from anyone.. they opened the series trying to do that in game 1 and Joe abused James Jones, taking him to the rim each time with ease… Wade got pts at the line and hit a couple if not 3 big 3’s; abused us in the paint b/c our coach is content with letting Wade beat us.. (smh) Miami’s offense is not that complex. however, it does cater to its talent unlike ours…
DecDawg,
man, im hard pressed to see what it is that he can do to find an open bucket. especially with everybody keeping defenders in the same place… there was a time last night where the floor was completely overloaded to one side… unbelievable!! the balance, spacing, and movement of our offense stinks. im just confused, they might run 1 set and go away from it and we’ll never see it again.. then we’ll go back with and iso Al… iso Joe… iso Josh… just plain stinky…

Can somebody explain to me why Josh whines so much during the game? if he gets called for a foul, he whines. If he thinks he is fouled and didnt get the whistle, he whines. He makes his emotions get the better of him time and time again (especially on the road). Seriously, it’s been 5 years Josh. Just shut up and play ball.
And I still dont understand how Spoelstra’s defensive scheme has taken Joe out of his game, but yet we cant slow Wade down? He is averaging about 28.5 points per game. Where is our defensive scheme?
Big Ray, I agree with you completely. Whenever we lose, all you hear about is how we didnt play with any energy or intensity. And I think thats because we have no offensive identity, no offensive system. We keep doing the same thing over and over, running the same plays over and over. Coach and the team must think that as long as there is energy, the plays will work.
(For the record, even if we win game 7, I am still not a fan of Woody).

Glad to see others saw what I saw last night. Posted immediately after the games in one of the other blogs. Not a Hawks fan, and also work a basketball official. What I saw last night was a disgrace to the game.
Clearly, the refs decided early on that they were going to give the Heat every advantage possible. Said it last night, when one player shoots more FT’s than the entire opposing team. IT IS A BADLY CALLED GAME. Like the hold in football, there is a foul committed on every play. It’s just a matter of which ones get called and when they call them. The referees controlled that game from the start, and was clear to me, as a unbiased observer, that the Heat were allowed to play one way while the Hawks were held to a different standard.
You know, they never did really do much when that Donaghe guy got caught betting in Vegas. My guess last night is either A – the word came down from up top they wanted Miami to advance or B – this set of refs had a bunch of money riding on the game last night.

Why are people so surprised at what is going on in this series. Isn’t this the same team that was embarrassed twice in NY by the Knicks. Wasn’t this the same team that lost to Golden State or went WINLESS on the Texas trip.
Let’s say we win tomorrow, SO WHAT!!! We will be lucky to win one game against the Cavs. Joe sucks right now, but you all know this man lead the league in minutes. Josh has been shooting bad all year from the outside. This team as presently CONSTRUCTED will never win a CHAMPIONSHIP!!! This series is an image of our season one good, one bad game. Win by 20, lose by 30. There is a reason why they say your weaknesses are exposed in the PLAYOFFS.
Josh basically wrote a check that he isn’t good enough to cash. This is why I love listening to commentators not named NIQUE and RATHBURN. They tell it like it is. Josh is just being Josh, a man who thinks he is a star, but really has a lot learning and WORK ETHIC to add.
Joe is who Joe is, a player that is passive and nothing more than a COMPLIMENTARY PEACE. This team nor this series should shock you.
There should be some changes made to this roster starting with Marvin and Josh.

Will people stop blaming the refs. Yeah they suck, but that has nothing to do with poor shooting in the third quarter and a lack of ball control with all of the turnovers. Refs are being complained about all over the league not just this series. This is a team that needs to be evaluated and if they come back with this same lineup plus Childress or something expect the same results. Playoffs and that is it.

Guys with his talent if you’ve watched other series show they only need minimal daylight to produce. Big Dave in closing how many timeS has Joe Johnson passed out of a double team and commanded the ball right back or went quick before the double team came or split the defense. That’s not coaching that’s a player allowing the defense to totally dictate his game or like was has been stated by others on this blog many time before to PASSIVE.

I agree with anybody that says Josh didn’t need to apologize for the dunk attempt. But, I think he was doing what he thought was the right thing. And who knows, maybe he was encouraged to do so.
And before you go on bashing him, consider also what Woody said in his interview, when questioned about the dunk attempt. If you missed it, I’ll summarize it for you: Woody didn’t appreciate it, didn’t like it, and basically was trying to wash his (and his staff’s) hands of it altogether. He said he spoke to Smith about it, as well.
So. Maybe the “knucklehead’s” coach told him he didn’t think that was such a hot thing to do. And maybe that’s why the “knucklehead” went and apologized to Spoelstra. I’ll tell you what I think: I think he was trying to do what he thought might be the right thing.
But there’s hope: if you read YahooSports writer Adam Wojnaroski’s article, in which he tries to filet Josh….Josh says he can make that dunk. And if he gets the chance, he’d do it again.
I say dunk on them every chance to you get, Josh. Dunk hard.
Just make sure you make the dunk…

Chop,
I agree, we’d win multiple titles if we had an MJ (read: LeBron) alongside JJ. I also think that with a coach whose offense relied more on motion (which maximizes JJ’s skill sets) and less on isolation (which minimizes it), we could “get by” (read: contend for 1-2 titles) with someone who could play the Jalen to his Reggie.
As an aside, Smoove has all the physical tools that LeBron does. But their basketball IQs and focus levels are just so far apart that it’s weird to even put them in the same sentence.

I don’t believe Joe Johnson is “soft.” I also don’t believe he’s the kind of leader and player that people want him to be. It’s just not him. But he was proclaimed as that kind of guy. And as I recall, SOOOOO many people felt like Billy Knight didn’t give up too much to get him. Yet here so many of us are, bashing him right into the ground.
Now I’m not going to get all self-righteous and say that he doesn’t deserve the pressure. He does. He’s “the man.” He came here to BE “the man.” And management paid him “the man” money. Yeah, I know. Josh Smith just got a contract last summer for $58 million. And he’s not lived up the money. Joe got $70 million. And he’s getting the heat, too.
The issue can be argued a number of ways. I still believe that a big part of the problem is recognizing what a guy can do, and putting him in the best possible situation to get the most out of him. Somebody asked Woody one time why he played Joe so hard, for so many minutes. He said he wanted him to make the all-star team. Oh yeah, that came out of HIS mouth. Huh? That’s how you help a guy to make the all-star team? By playing him 40mpg? How about running a series of screen plays and opening up other offensive options, so he doesn’t have to face double teams all night, EVERY night?
I am disappointed in Joe Johnson’s performance, particularly in this year’s playoffs. And he’s shot a rough percentage from the field all year long. But it ain’t because he’s soft. It’s because he isn’t always as aggressive as his counterparts. And it’s because he rarely takes a shot or even a dribble that’s not contested by two or three defenders.
Joe rarely gets to play one-on-one, like Wade does. If he got to play like that more often, he’d probably manage close to 28ppg, too. Seriously, think about it. When’s the last time you saw Joe against a single defender? How OFTEN have you seen that? The only time he can expect to face only one defender is when he’s outside the arc.
Just sayin’…

Niremetal,
Josh Smith doesn’t belong in the same sentence as Lebron. But guess what? How many can you think of that do? I’ll say it for the upteenth time (not to you, but to people who still don’t get it). Lebron came in the league with great handles, great athleticism, and great court vision. He could do it all, and all the skills were there (except maybe 3-point shooting).
Josh Smith came into the league knowing how to run, jump, and dunk. Since then, he has been learning (albeit very slowly) how to do just about everything else. And the NBA is the worst place to have to learn that. Am I making excuses for Josh? No. I’m separating the difference between “physical tools” and “skills.” The tools are there. The skills to use them? He has to learn those. I don’t know why it’s not obvious to all who have eyes that work. Learning how to do the most basic of things on the highest level of competition? Gotta be an uphill battle…
Not an excuse. A reality.

Big Ray, afte reading your posts last night, I hope that you never call anyone else on the blog “sarcastic”.
I agree that this team has long since needed veteran leadership. Sund claims that brining in Flip & Mo was done at the expense of Chill. Somehow, Sund or the owners must figure out a way to keep our younger players (especially someone like Chill who played without ego, without a need to start and without a need for plays to be run for him to be ultra-efficient) while adding some experience. Some of you likely read the article about Juwan Howard’s impact on the Bobcats. Supposedly, he was the one who became a “big man coach” for that team and provided invaluable leadership to the locker room. He was available to the Hawks. But we invested in Gardner, Hunter & Morris at the end of our bench. Sund needs to find the next vet who is willing to take a vet’s minimum to stay on an NBA roster before exiting the league. Someone like Kevin Ollie, Theo Ratliff, Juwan Howard, Malik Rose, Lindsey Hunter, the Collins Brothers or Michael Ruffin need to be high on Sund’s list this summer. Those guys won’t solve the “quest for a vocal leader” but they will likely bring much more value for a team seeking a third consecutive playoff appearance than an undrafted free agent.

Astro Joe,
I saw your comparison of Joe and Josh, stat-wise. It is quite interesting. Of course, there are some specific details that explain a lot more. But then, they also raise more questions. And what kind of conclusions should we derive from what we see? A number of observations:
1) Josh started off with a bang (games 1 and 2), then went downhill from there (games 3 and 4), went back up in game 5, then back down in game 6.
2)Joe Johnson did not start well at all, and didn’t have a “good” game until game 5. Game 6 was as bad as the first 4 games.
Now, let’s compare playoffs vs. regular season. Statistics that are 1 or 2 percentage points apart may as well be the same:
1)Josh Smith in the playoffs: Rebounds (up from 7.2 to 8.8), Scoring average (15.6 to 15.5, same), Assists (2.4 to 2.2, same), Turnovers (down from 2.33 to 1.83), Blocks (up 1.6 to 2.0), Steals (1.5 to 1.4, same), FG% (down 49.1 to 40.0), 3 point % (down 29.9 to 15.4), FT% (up 58.8 to 69.7)
2)Joe Johnson: Rebounds (4.4 to 4.3, same), Scoring average (down 21.4 to 15.5), Assists (down 5.8 to 3.0), Turnovers (up 2.47 to 3.33), Blocks: pretty much N/A, Steals (down 1.1 to .3), FG% (down 43.7 to 39.1), 3 point % (down 36 to 26.7), FT% (down 82.6 to 63.6)
Highlights/Lowlights of significance:
1)Josh Smith lowlights: drastically reduced FG%, including from the arc. Highlights: ups rebounding, lowers turnovers, significantly ups FT%.
2)Joe Johnson lowlights: significant reduction in ppg, assists, 3 point %, and FT%. Minor reduction in steals and increase in turnovers. Highlights: None.
So Josh shoots worse than ever, but hits from the charity stripe a lot more, and what we end up with is the same scoring we got all season with a small decrease in turnovers, with an increase in rebounds. Joe pretty much has played worse all the way around, with the most serious decreases in scoring and assists.
What gives?
Josh is the so-called knucklehead with limited skills that can’t get it straight. Joe is the all-star, best player on the team, and most skilled.
Interesting stats indeed. I think this is not just a tale of two players, however. It’s gotta be bigger than that…

THE OFFICIATING WAS ATROCIOUS FRIDAY NIGHT PLUS THE HAWKS DIDN’T HELP THEMSELVES BY SHOOTING JUMP SHOTS ONLY ALL NIGHT.THEY NEED TO COME OUT AND ATTACK THE BASKET DESPITE TERRIBLE OFFICIATING. ALSO, IF THEY WOULD STOP LISTENING TO OUT SIDE SOURCES AND PLAY THEIR GAME, NOT ONLY WILL THEY WIN SUNDAY, BUT THEY CAN BEAT THE CALVALIERS ALSO.I REMEMBER THATS WHAT KILLED DOMINIQUE WILKENS AND THE HAWKS SEASON WHEN MOSES MALONE, THEUS,AND KELVIN WILLIS PLAYED HERE. THEY WOULD LISTEN TO THE MEDIA.BEFORE THE SEASON STARTED, INSTEAD OF THE PLAYERS GET EXCITED ABOUT THE SEASON, THE MEDIA BEGAN TO SAY, IS IT GOING TO BE ENOUGH BALLS TO PLAY WITH?THE PLAYERS LISTEN TO THAT AND GOT OUSTED IN THE FIRST ROUND BECAUSE THEY LISTEN TO AND BELIEVE WHAT THEY HEARD. JOSH SMITH DIDN’T HAVE ANYTHING TO APOLOGIZE FOR.TELL THE HEAT TO GET THEIR TEAM READY AND THEY WON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT A HAWK PLAYER SHOWING THEM UP.LOOK OUT CLEVELAND, THE HAWKS WILL BE THERE.DESPITE THE NBA TRYING TO MARKET JAMES AS MICHAEL JORDON, THE HAWKS WILL KICK BUTT.

Astro Joe,
What, me sarcastic? I was hoping to reach YOUR level of potency.
Actually, my thinking is much more along the lines of yours, though you probably didn’t get that from what I had to say. I believe that energy alone won’t get it done. But that seems to be the theme in way too many circles, and I’m not talking about this blog. Energy has to have a direction, a guide. It works best within a system. Look no further that Mario “Mad Dog” West for an example. But a system is no good if it has parts that aren’t as well oiled as others.
I never forgot all the times you called for a big man coach. How many years has it been, 2 or 3? Never forgot. Your idea was Clifford Ray. I remember. And that is one of the things killing this franchise/team. Woody can’t teach Josh, Marvin, Al, etc how to play in the post. He doesn’t have time to do that. He doesn’t know HOW. The man was a combo guard, for crying out loud. And while his mentor gets mucho credit, the man had horse-blinder vision for ONE position: pg.
You’ve called for a specialist, and we never got one (sorry, Ty Hill, but I’m just not seein’ it). So who do these young guys get to learn from? Nobody. Woody and his staff? These guys have neither the experience, the expertise, nor the time. Larry Drew is a guard-oriented guy, too.
I agree that the Hawks MUST play with energy, but I think it’s unrealistic to expect that sort of intensity all the time, and that a team has to have a base structure to work with. But the base structure is no good without the right parts.
As you say, that’s where Sund’s job starts. I think your comments about a veteran at the minimum are VERY MUCH ON TARGET. Couldn’t think of a better way to say that at all. I’ve made much over having a vocal leader, but the reason why is because of what you said: we invested in a pile of free agent youngsters. Nothing against them, but this doesn’t fit to me.
For one thing, this is what you put at the end of Woody’s bench? I’m not knocking Woody, but if you’re going to give the man a 2-year extension, then how about putting some guys in that you KNOW he can make use of. He’s not real big on youngsters that have a lot to learn, but he would probably be just fine with them as long as he had some experienced vets to take them under their wings.
But he doesn’t. Why? Because his three of his starters are young guys who still have a lot to learn (like it or not, 5 yrs of NBA experience + 23 yr old forward does not = polished product, unless his name is Lebron). And the vets he has are two guys who are just too busy trying to do what Woody wants them to do on the court.
You’re right. Sund needs to do a better job. And he needs to do it quick (this summer). I’ll always say that if you’re going to give a coach the benefit of the doubt, a chance, etc….then give him the tools that work for him. Woody deserves that.

Ray, the most interesting thing to me in the playoff stats was FGAs. Joe is the All-Star but he’s not taking a ton of shots. Hard to score if the defense forces you to pass the ball. His assists are down which suggests that he isn’t passing to an open player capable to taking the pass and scoring. More likely he is passing to someone who is either missing the shot or needs to pass again. Smith is taking 2 more FGAs a game then in the regular season. And he has taking almost as many 3-point attempts as Joe. Joe is taking about 4 fewer FGAs per game in the playoffs vs. the regular season. By the way, Bibby is down about 2 FGAs/game as well.
I think it speaks to the Heat’s defensive plan… don’t allow our backcourt to beat them.
I see my guy Hinrich is having a nice 4th quarter in Game 7. Man, I wish we could trade for him this summer.

I admire Joe Johnson as a player and as a model nba citizen but you gotta admit he lacks the killer instinct this team desperately needs. He is a very passive-aggressive leader and that trickles down to the younger players (not Horford.) He does not ADVOCATE for himself nor his players when they are victims of unfair officiating. Maybe he will develope this during his contract year. Maybe HE’LL never get it…Who convinced Josh Smith to apologize to Spolestra? Softness…Win or lose, we need to sign some heart this off-season…There needs to be implementation of some oversight over the NBA officials.

I am a model citizen of the NBA: I collect my checks and fade into obscurity when the game is on the line. Thanks for subsidizing, er I mean supporting the Hawks this year, Atlanta!!!

“I think it speaks to the Heat’s defensive plan… don’t allow our backcourt to beat them.”
Absolutely. You’re on the money. Which leaves us with two options: beat their defensive gameplan by somehow managing to impose our will, forcing the issue from the backcourt…or modify/change the gameplan. And that is precisely what a lot of this banter has been about. We’ll see what happens. Looking forward to 1300 hrs, tomorrow.
Yeah, I’d like Hinrich, too. Wonder if we can make something like that happen? A story for another day…

Hawks Fan in New Orleans,
Read Adam Wojnaroski’s article. Josh says he apologized. Guess what else he said? He said he’d try the dunk again if given the opportunity…in game 7, no less. Does that sound soft to you?
My advice to Josh: Dunk on the Heat every chance you get. Just make the dunks.

Wojnarowski’s article was the weakest, most rambling piece of garbage I’ve read in a while. There are plenty of legitimate ways to criticize Josh Smith’s development as a player, but he touched on none of them, instead focusing on this dunk attempt and failing miserably to turn it into a metaphor for his career.

“His assists are down which suggests that he isn’t passing to an open player capable to taking the pass and scoring. ”
That’s been my biggest disappointment with him in these playoffs, and it was on full display in Game 6 — when the Heat bring the double team, he doesn’t pass it quick enough and doesn’t get the ball to someone in scoring or assisting position. He just seems too indecisive in every way imaginable with the exception of Game 5.

Big Ray,
If Josh Smith said that and tries it again he’s not soft – he’s a ballsy renegade. Maybe he just felt like clarifying his intentions-nothing Wrong with that. Spolestra and D Wade poured it on at the end of game six. Will Wade apologize? We just need to bring it to them 1300 hours. Silence this series once and for all if we slip, it should force Sund to make some tough decisions this off season.
