HAWKKSVILLE - They didn’t even make it to the bus before vowing to return.
“Don’t make any plans for Sunday,” Heat center Jermaine O’Neal told me. “I promise you, we’ll be back here Sunday.”
Little did he know that Heat swingman James Jones had already cautioned me about looking past anything other than a Game 7 Sunday between the Hawks and Heat in this first round playoff series.
“We’ll be back,” a smiling Jones said after the Hawks smashed the Heat 106-91 in Game 5 Wednesday night at Philips Arena. “We’re going to go back home to handle our business [in Game 6 Friday night] and we’ll see you back here this weekend.”
I’ve known both O’Neal and Jones since we all lived and worked in Indianapolis, I was the beat writer and they were toiling for what used to be an Eastern Conference power (the franchise formerly known as the Indiana Pacers). I know they’re competitors and they feel, just as the Hawks do, that they are the better team.
So I don’t dismiss what they say.
And in a series that has been nothing but a parade of blowouts, why should the Heat feel any other way?
While the Heat is aiming for a return to A-Town, the Hawks are locked in on doing Friday night what they did Monday to turn the series around – winning again on the floor at AmericanAirlines Arena in Game 4. ”Now comes the hard part,” Hawks forward Josh Smith told me after Game 5. “When somebody is on the doorstep of getting eliminated, that’s when it gets real. We just have to go back down there to Miami and handle business. We have to go down there with a business attitude and play our game.”
AFTER TWO STRAIGHT WINS it’s clear that the Hawks’ “game” includes whipping the Heat in all the categories that count.
They have outrebounded the Heat 77-62 since the start of Game 4. They’ve had 38 assist to the Heat’s 28, outscored them 72-48 in the paint, whipped them 32-18 on second chance points and 27-10 in fast break points. Toss in the Hawks’ defensive performance (the Heat have shot .428 from the floor and .285 from beyond the 3-point) and it’s no wonder the Hawks have a chance to eliminate the Heat Friday night.
“I think defense is the key for us,” Zaza Pachulia said. “We played pretty good defense (Wednesday), I think. We know how to win. When everybody does the little things, we’re a tough team to beat. And in the last two games, we really did those things.”
NO PLAYER WILL HAVE MORE HEAT ON HIS SHOULDERS (literally and figuratively) than Pachulia will Friday night in Game 6. If Al Horford can’t go (he walked out of the arena under his own power after Game 5 but was wearing an ice compression boot on his right leg after suffering a “mild ankle sprain” before halftime) Pachulia will have to fill the void at center.
Pachulia has all the experience necessary for the job. And it was his inside work in Game 4 (18 rebounds and 12 points) that pushed the Hawks over the top in that game. And he’s still sporting that black eye he earned in Game 3, a badge of honor he wears better than any of his fly Italian suits.
“I’ve been coming in and replacing Al the whole year,” Pachulia said. “But hopefully, he’s going to be back soon, because we really need him. In the playoffs, sometimes guys get in foul trouble or whatever, so we need everybody. But I’ve been in this situation before, so it’s nothing new.”
THERE IS NO NEWS YET ON AL, either, so relax. The Hawks practice this morning at 11 and the first real update won’t come until after they have finished. The biggest test will be to see how Horford’s ankle responds to the team flight to Miami, provided Horford makes that trip.
Horford tried to come back after halftime last night but said he simply couldn’t do it. Playing without both Horford and Marvin Williams, who is probably out for the rest of this series, is going to be a monstrous task if the Hawks have to do so in Games 6 and 7. I’m not sure how Hawks coach Mike Woodson will scramble things up to make it happen, but it’ll be interesting to see what transpires next.
In today’s edition of the SOUTH FLORIDA REPORT, our friends from Miami are showing no mercy for the home team.
My man Israel Gutierrez of the Miami Herald challenged the Heat to answer the Hawks’ physical nature in Game 6 or hit South Beach for vacation.
Greg Stoda of the Palm Beach Post questioned the Heat’s sincerity with all the elbows, hard fouls and tough-guy posturing that went on in Game 5.
And my man Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel likened last night’s MMA action to the Heat-Knicks battles of yesteryear. And he would know since he’s covered the Heat from their first day of existence.
Game 6 ought to be a fantastic mess.

What did you think of Smooves between the legger?
I say no big deal, we were up by plenty and it would have brought the house down had a connected.
I feel like the announcers/media would have praised Wade/Bron for doing the same thing, but are killing our boys.

I agree phar. In fact, didn’t Lebron do the samething a couple years ago? I doubt think it was a playoff game. Josh was just trying to entertain the home crowd. Go Hawks.

I don’t have a huge problem with J Smith’s between the legger. I would have much rather seen him finish strong but taken within the context of the score and momentum, not a big deal. It is no surprise that the announcers/media had a problem with it. They had no problem with the hard foul on Mo Evans when Dwayne Wade took him out of the air. I don’t care what is said about trying to block a shot, if you try to block a dunk from behind in mid-air body to body, it is a foul. Plain and simple. I am very dissapointed in the broad perception of our team in the media and the questionable at times calling of the games. I think that we have clearly dominated the last two games with occasional let down stretches and should maintain the same intensity in Game 6. Nothing better than eliminating a team on their home court. Was very pleased with JJ’s play last night and he continued to show a good ability to pass out of double teams and take advantage of single coverage. As for Smith, I still wish he would back off of the 20 foot jumpers. Flip was a monster during several stretches last night and I think that Solomon played real well during his time in the game. We need the whole team to step up in Game 6 and get this series taken care of.

The between the legs dunk was nothing to me. The only problem I had with it is that he missed it. If you’re going to do something freaky like that in the playoffs you better make it. But who cares that he tried it. T-Mac and Vince Carter have thrown the ball off the backboard in traffic and dunked before. Who cares?

I would consider Horford out or at best very limited for Friday night, this means a lot of time for Solo. This is were not developing your bench really hurts. Last night Solo was out of position several times against Wade, which resulted in him getting fouls. Maybe it’s his lack of skills, but I think it’s the lack of playing time. Practice can’t prepare you for the emotions and speed of a real game, especially a Playoff game. I hope Solo can learn quickly, because Friday is tomorrow and the HEAT are looking for revenge!!

Sekou, you echoed my sentiments exactly. Who cares? Wade is notorious for standing on top of announcer’s tables and screaming “This is my house” after defeating an opponent. No different than what Smith did. Only difference is Smith didn’t finish and Wade does his theatrics after winning a game. However, it is the same result: they played to the crowd at the expense of a defeated opponent. That is such a nonstory.

I really hate the heat and Wade at this point. All Wade does is cry. Why is he the only player in the league that is not allowed to be fouled. The heat and their coach are a joke. You took Josh’s attempt at a circus dunk as too much? Wade stares down the Hawks bench everytime he makes a shot. Jermaine Oneal should have been called for a flagrant on the foul on Zsa Zsa and the Hawks never complain. So go ahead and cry about Josh and the refs but make sure to look up because the soaring figure above you is Josh dunking on you again.
PS
I really like D-Wade before this series. He is easily the most hateable player in the league if you watch him for long enough. I wish the media would shut up about his back too. Its the playoffs. Nobody is fresh.

Gusman, quit your crying. You are SUCH A BABY. I saw on one of the Miami Herald articles that at the bottom you did your little cry baby rant about how the Hawks fans are low class.. Wah wah wah.
Get over it. Tell Wade to whipe up his tears.. they are still on the Philips Arena court.
The guy gets hurt (a little bit) and stays on the ground motionless like he is paralyzed… Then gets taken to the back only to come back “100%” and score 17 in the third. Hurt? My ass.
Another thing about the Smith dunk miss. I think that is crap. People cheer LeBron on ANYTHING he does.. He puts on a “show” every single game he plays. Is it not offensive TO ANYONE ELSE when LeBron throws up that pixie dust in the air after all the player introductions? I don’t care when he’s in Cleveland. Do whatever you want. Don’t do it in my hometown. That pisses me off.

i actually think that Solo has the skill set and the ability to be a contributer and fill in. it is definitely a matter of playing time and game experience… not necessarily the adjustment to the speed, but the habits, and playing styles of the opponent. thats usually to blame for most of his fouls. all in all i think he did a good job when he was in there… his length and leaping ability enabled him to give a good contest on shots…
Sekou, Israel Gutierrez is your boy… wow.. did you read how he ripped us in the paper Thurs.? ive never heard you that bias in favor of the Hawks. or even that doubtful of the opposition. well, maybe cause the Hawks never give that assurance…

I’m not concerned about how Miami perceived Josh’s missed dunk. As must posturing that goes on in the NBA, it’s silly. Horford’s ankle is a bigger concern. Joe definitely has to play like a superstar down in Miami. Their crowd will be hot and Wade’s mysterious back injury is gone.
I think the reason why Hawks fans booed wasn’t because Wade was hurt. It’s the fact he’s overplayed his injuries (ie: his back) and the fans initial reaction was “c’mon, he’s being a drama queen, he’s not hurt.” I NEVER doubted for a minute that he would come back in that game. Sure enough he did and he hit a gang of shots. That’s the thing, he and Paul Pierce have this fake a injury thing going on.

The crowd and the game were great last night…….Mario stomping his feet at center court at half was def one of the best highlights. I love the fight the HAWKS showed last night. Solo and Josh get a shout out for stepping up to the puss DWADE and literally shoving him around.
Great jobs HAWKS, and great job FANS! The crowd had a lot of toughness, highlights, and overall heart to cheer about.

Westurd, I really think the entire NBA is used to the “big name” teams and star players getting the homecourt treatment when at Philips Arena. That treatment is NO MORE. The Hawks actually have a team that is fighting for a championship. Atlanta wants to rally around that. That’s special.
I was PROUD of the boos for Wade. I was PROUD being a part of the “D-Wade sucks” chants. If it weren’t for the “defense!” music starting up, I think the entire arena would have gotten in on the act.
Did we actually do a “Stand up until the first shot is made” thing? I really liked that!

JDub, I couldn’t say it any better. I think Mike Fratello has something against the Hawks because he justifies why every questionable call that goes the Heat’s way, should go the Heat’s way. I look at the local guys because its obvious the way the media is going. As for all the Josh comments, I’m still trying to figure out why there is more scrutiny on Josh Smith than any other player on our team. He was not the 2nd overall pick (I refuse to say his name anymore), he was the 17th pick. If he was out instead of No 2 pick, we wouldn’t be in this series. Josh starts the breaks with his defense, he’s unstoppable on the break, and when he decides to stop shooting jumpers until he gets one, he will be even better for us. I know that eventually he will have a jumper. His Dad had a monster jay. Maybe his Dad needs to give him more tutelage on jump shots.

I agree who cares about the miss dunk Josh did. He wasn’t trying to show off. Josh being Josh just trying to give the crowd a little something to remember. For the Heat fans who keep saying us Hawks fans are wrong for booing wade I think it was the fact that wade always gets hurt and returns with a superhero save us entrance(ur either hurt or not hurt wade.)I was watching the game on HD I saw a lil bit of dirty plays from the Heat. With or without Horford Hawks have to come together as a team and put this series away for good. Yes it would be better to win the series on home court in front of fans, but lets get this over with friday night.

With the possibility of our ‘big man bench’ being shortened, it will be important for them to stay out of foul trouble. Who knows, we may see Morris and Hunter make token appearances at the end of the quarter or half to ’save’ the big men we have. Heck, I might run some zone every now and then just to change the look and protect the big men.
On the offensive side, we can settle for jump shots. Players will need to drive to the basket, in hopes of getting the Heat in foul trouble also. Flip does a great job of this and will need help from others.

Which reminds me, what’s up with Fratello’s hair? That’s what the other commentators should be upset about. Is that a weave or a rug? Wow.
Which also reminds me, is the halftime show scripted or not? It was absolutely excruciating, basically like listening to three idiots shooting the breeze in the living room. The best was listening to Barkley deny that he saw a foul against (I think) Smith when the guy was being bodyslammed. I kept hoping someone would ask him if he was drunk.

Bfred, great post~!
I am starting to get a little tired of Fratello and Stockton (I record the games because I’m at Philips). Stockton is plain old boring, and Fratello has been ALL over the Heat’s nuts and constantly criticizes the Hawks on any mistakes they make.
Don’t get me started on the three babbling idiots on TNT. I used to like them, honestly. They have been RIPPING on the Hawks this past week, and it’s unreal. I think Chris Webber has ZERO TALENT and should be kicked off of TV. He looks so awkward on stage and nervous like he has no idea what he’s going to say and TRIES SO HARD TO SAY SOMETHING FUNNY or basketball oriented. Get over it Webber. You’re washed up…stop trying to hold onto the NBA. It doesn’t need you.

We know the old folks are resistant to change, but let me tell you a “changing of the guards” is going on in the NBA. And it starts with our young, nitty, gritty Atlanta Hawks. We are throwing punches and taking hit. But guess what? We are still standing with the gleam of “VICTORY” in our eye. “OUR HEAD IS BLOODY BUT UNBOWED”. We are ready for these playoffs. The Heat is a good test for thing s to come. But come Friday, they are done. The HAWKS are going to end this thing. Miami can talk trah they are coming back to Atlanta all they want. But they really don’t want that. It’s done in Miami. Like Ali, the HAWKS are calling the round. The HEAT is done in 6. And then, the HAWKS continue their road of “SHOCKING THE WORLD!!” with this nitty, gritty bunch of young “ballers”. They aint’t playing, y’all. Since Wade cannot use the “partying in the A-Town” excuse – this “back injury” is another built in excuse for the whooping that’s taken place the last two games. Its a win-win for Wade – if he wills his team to victory, he would have done it in spite of the injury – if they lose it was because he was banged up.
The whole Jermaine Oneal guarantee is to psych his team and fans up – he is really confident because the possibility of Big Al being out. They are also using this J Smoove dunk attempt as a rallying cry to to inspire themselves to victory. They are desperate (Hawks are the better team) but The Hawks better come ready to fight!

gusman…remember ‘06? I don’t think the officiating crew that handed the Heat the title is working this series. Sorry.
Here is my coaching suggestion….put Josh Smith on O’Neal. I promise you…Josh would shut that guy down. O’Neal wants no part of Josh Smith.
I usually like Barkley and Smith on TNT. They are annoying me in this series, though. They have obviously not watched the Hawks all year. They both offer nothing but bush league analysis of the team. And, to those of you that continue to reference the “dribble, dribble, dribble, shoot” BS from Kenny Smith, stop it. That is not the Hawks normal offense. We know that because we have watched them all year. Saturday, when Kenny Smith made that comment, was only the third time he had seen the Hawks all year. So, F him.
Also, if you saw Barkley and Smith talk at half of Nuggets/Hornets, they were commenting on Josh’s dunk attempt. They implied that the Heat “were watching” and that they would use it as motivation in the next game. Who gives a sh#t?! Once the ball tips, none of that matters. Hawks winning or losing game 6 has nothing to do with the flashy dunk attempt.

I love the comments about DWade’s back injury. It’s probably true but if I recall Chipper had spasms last year and missed three games. So how bad Wade’s injury anyway? TNT and ESPN are dying because the Hawks might win this series. They want DWade against LeBron so bad they can taste it. Kenny Smith can’t stand us, Barkley maybe can tolerate us. They don’t seem to get it that the point of the playoffs is to be the last team standing not the team with the biggest ESPN/TNT stars. Agree with all the so what’s on the dunk attempt. I seem to recall LeBron throwing down some freaky dunk against the Pistons when the Cavs were up a bunch. And more others I can’t even recount. Get over it Heat.

D-Wade is a drama queen when it comes to being hurt and whining to the officials and he’s been that way all the way back to when they beat Dallas for the title as Avery Johnson was caught during a time out praising his team in the huddle for not being suckered by D-Wade acting hurt and then all of sudden him flying to the basket for a dunk.
I agree with the blogger that the Hawks should view Game Six as their game seven in terms of focus (It’s a business trip because its time to handle our business!), remember what it took to win Game Four, use the boos that will rain down to help them focus, and enjoy the sweetest of victories: closing out a series on your opponents floor (ex. Dallas ending the Spurs run in San Antonio).
(BTW, if you need a showboat move by your opponent in a blowout victory to get yourself motivated to win an elimination game, then you are tired and pathetic.)

Gotta say that the reason D-Fade got booed is ’cause he flagrant fouled Mo Evans from behind on a very dangerous play. If we did that to DWade, the whole Miami bench would attack the guy who fouled him.

I watched the game on sports south for Bob’s call anyway. Also, ‘Nique I love you man, you were are greatest player and a great person, but dude you make me miss stinger with the color commentary… where’s heat check?
On Josh’s dunk, I have absolutely no problem with it, and I don’t think that he would try it during a critical part of the game. Now, he very well might shoot a 20 footer with time on the shot clock at a critical point. I will never critique Josh for going hard to the rack, if he will please, please, please stop shooting from beyond 15 feet.
Finally, all you Heat fans… too bad, so sad, go to your own blog sites. We don’t need or want your loser, idiotic and soft opinions here.

Somebody tell Coach not to let DFade shoot from that spot just left of the top of the key! He makes that shot in his sleep so make him do something else!
Also, if JO gets the ball near the block, go ahead and double him a couple times. Those two are all that remain of the Heat’s offense.

I’d like to see Josh posterize D-Wade with a “bounce the ball off D-Wade’s grill” through the legs windmill jam in the fourth quarter of a Hawks’ blowout in Game 6. That would be the perfect way to end this series.

….and the Josh Smith dunk attempt is being blown way out of proportion……its just that these shock jocks have to fill 4 hours of air time and his dunk is an easy topic to stick to (even though there is no meat to this story)
Teams always look for something to fuel their fire and getting blown out three times should be enough fuel for the heat. If they want to focus it all on being down by 20 points and our guy dunking in their eye then let them focus on that. Who really cares what they focus on.

I too have lost a lot of respect for Wade in this series Edgewood. My wife was railing about how big of a crybaby he was last night and she doesn’t even watch basketball that much. I told her, “You know I actually liked D Wade, until this series.” He walks around pouting and arguing and bowing his chest up when he makes a play. That is what I like about JJ. Most of the time, sometimes to his detriment, he keeps quiet, accepts congratulations for good plays and gives congratulations to his teammates. Wade is a crybaby. You should be real proud Heat fans.

Honestly, the Hawks if they could just stay motivated and focused could be serious spoilers in the East. Denver could do the same out West. A NBA nightmare as they have penciled in Kobe vs LeBron 1. The Cavs are good because they know there rolls and they have Lebron. They also have flash and attitude and can care less what people think, look at there little player intro the media adores. The Hawks have to clash the party, the Heat aren’t on the Hawks level and the Hawks need to emphatically let them and the league know that Friday! Really its simple to me, if Josh and Joe are driving to the whole instead of shooting bad jumpers the Hawks are good. If Bibby and Flip are stroking and Z and Al crashing boards like mad men, this team can compete with anybody!

I’m glad to hear that Miami has guarantee a win for game six. At lease, we know they will be prepared…I don’t want to hear no excuses. I can just imagine how the media WILL PUMP SUNSHINE UP DWade ASSSSSS…AFTER THE HAWKS WIN. There will be more talk about DWade health then the Hawks victory.
As for Josh missed dunk…I don’t condone show boating…but I got no problem with swagger…something these guys have been sorely missing. YOU WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THEY WOULD HAVE COMMENDED HIM FOR STEPPING UP SOLO…go figure.
Josh is out there having fun and DISHING OUT CROW at the same time. We need Josh to continue to recapture the magic he had when he won the Slam Dunk Contest. Man the crowd was buzzing out of control WHEN PUNKED OUT ONEAL…THAT’S WHAT’S UP!!!!!!!!!!
WHEN JOSH IS GOING TO THE RACK WITH THAT KIND OF FEROCITY…HE’S UNSTOPPABLE!!!!!!!!!!!
Side-bar, Harry The Hawk was on fire out there doing his MJ imitation …but the performance by baby Hawk and his boys on the trampoline was terrible…after that first cat took a spill…that was it…they will definitely have to make some adjustment for round two!!!!! Heh heh

I see that Woody will start Solo if horford can’t go. Smart move. Zaza should stay on the bench where he has proven his effectiveness. Let Solo do what he can and waste his fouls and then bring Zaza in to do the heavy lifting. The funny thing i keep hearing is how Miami is supposedly going to punish Josh tomorrow night. The question I have is who exactly is going to do this? Who? O’Neal maybe? The same guy Josh posterized last night. Maybe Magloire? The same guy who would have caught it last night. I’d much rather take Josh going to the hole over their guys any day.
Us Atlanta sport fans have earned ours when it comes to anything in the playoffs involving major league sports. You d*** right I wanted to see Smoove throw it down last night – after all these years I’ve earned the chance to be able to throw it in another guys face. How many times has MJ came into our building and put on a dunking show? How about Vince Carter? Just last year I can remember the alien himself (Sam Cassel) coming in here and celebrating knocking down a few threes in the last game of the reg. season against Boston. I’m tired of hearing folks talk about a missed dunk. It’s being blown way out of proportion if you ask me. As an old fan of ATL sports I would have jumped out of the arena if Josh threw that dunk down along with the group of fans in my section. That would have iced off a good night of chanting DWade sucks and just having a fun time at a Hawks playoff game (Something that up until last year we hadn’t seen in a LONG time).

How come the Heat didn’t guarantee a win doing the post game interviews so the entire world can hear it? Nope, they rather whisper it to a beat writer on their way to the team bus. Some heart of a champion they got. And look at the players who made the statement, JON and James Jones. They haven’t won anything since they been in the league. What a joke. The only thing I would change from last nite game is for Josh to take 1 step closer before taking off to dunk JON and Beasley. Let’s Go Hawks. Bring on Lebron. WE READY, WE READY…

Goodness, the Heat and D-Babe are taking crying to whole new level. I thought the Celts were bad last year, these girls are even topping that. Tears-in-a- Flash hits the deck and lays there like he’s been sniped more than any player I’ve ever seen! Chris Paul is getting thrown to the ground, Zsa-Zsa gets a black eye, Dalembert gets an atomic elbow from Dwight Howard, Mo Evans gets body slammed, and all these cats suck it up and keep it moving. But Wade? Naw, all you keep hearing is how hurt he is, then drops thirty. Lays on the floor for nearly two minutes, then hits his next four shots in a row. Talk about milking it- goodness! Win or lose, I’ll be glad when this series is over so I don’t have to watch the soap opera “As D-Wade Falls” anymore- ugh!

I am not going to lie, I boo’ed D-Wade when we ran into Smoove on that play. I really did.. because I thought he was “faking it” like he usually does when he doesn’t get a call.
He layed there motionless. I thought he broke his neck or some crazy freak type accident. I stopped my booing and was worried for the guy. I figured the stretcher would be arriving soon and the paramedics would be taking Wade away to not return to the game. For some ODD reason, he gets up by his own power and walk to the back? The guy was motionless for five minutes, yet he could get up on his own account.
Of course we all know he came back mintues later and scored 20+ in the second half. What a baby.
Never will I be duped by Dwyane Wade again. Once a baby, always a baby.

Dont feel bad Volman. I booed DWade from my couch after the 1st 5mins he was lying there. I knew he was milking it. Funny how he can be laid on the floor motionless and 30 mins later his was involved in two high flying air battle fouls. I mean I thought his back was hurting. He didn’t seem to have a problem with his back when he flew thru the air and drop kick Mo Evans in the neck from behind just to preventive his dunk… Like you said, D-Babe won’t fool me again. I will be wrong about him being injuried before he does that again…

Far too much is being made of the Josh Smith dunk. I feel so relieved reading this blog knowing that:
I am not the only one who lost mucho respecto for “Dwayne-Wayne” Wade (I was just starting to like him, too!)…
I am not the only one who feels that it is oh-so painfully obvious that the League, TNT/ESPN, sponsors and the like are absolutely drooling over a potential LeBron/Wade matchup…
I am not the only who feels that the Josh Smith between the legger is being grossly overblown…
I am not the only who feels that Wade and Paul Pierce are just drama queen prima donas that get there jollies by milking injuries through the media for personal glory (none of you guys will be placed in the same category as MJ fighting the flu to go for 38 against the Jazz in the Finals, so give it a rest!)…
I am not the only who noticed everybody kind of did the “stand up til the first shot made” fan thing…first time I ever saw that at a Hawks game…it was kind of cool…everybody just kind of simultaneously sat down…I thought I would be the only one to sit, but I think everybody just had that feeling like, “stay on your feet til they hit”….good job Hawks fans!
It is soooo clear that anyone on TV who ever tries to offer an analysis of the Hawks has never seen us play an entire game more three times this year…they just offer these generic analyses of the players like Josh and Joe and Marvin and throw out words like “athleticism” and “long” but they have no idea what they’re talking about because they couldn’t be more off base as to what they’re suggesting or “reporting”…(Keep it Real, Sekou!)…it is such an insult to the REAL fans who’ve actually watched this team…

Wow, I’ve been reading all these stories on Yahoo and other things and now suddenly we are the whiners who are classless and thugs. The Heat will get every advantage and we will get none. That will continue through the playoffs. Also there is this thing on 790 the fan announcer Steve Holman on Yahoo. If you go to NBA for Yahoo you can find it. He is quite a homer but I thought it was hilarious. Somehow we are still getting blamed for that. All they are saying is just wait till the sweep from the LBJ’s. I really hope we can do something in that series (if we get there).

It’s good to see that there are indeed real Hawks fans out there. It’s as it should be. But make no mistake about it, Josh Smith is an extremely talented, immature, petulant, jerk…and has been since probably before high-school. I don’t know if he’ll improve with maturity and apparently the Hawks coaches haven’t been able to get through his thick skull. It’ll be sad if he never, ever ‘gets it’ and goes down in NBA annals as just what I just said.

Dirty Dawg, i am going to have to disagree with you. Well, Smith is very talented and immature, but jerk he is not. He complains about every call, but he is the heart of this team. That attempted dunk that he did was a part of that “killer instinct” that a lot of the Hawks don’t have (Joe Johnson). I say dunk, alley oop, and throw it off of the backboard for all I care. The Hawks are not in it to make friends with the Heat during this series. Win, and win big.
He is just playing with passion…we all wish he could just play smarter. The rest will come.

I agree with alot of the comments up here. I used to respect the Heat and D-wade…but now I am just getting tired of his flopping and complaining and the Heat’s game plan (a.k.a flop everytime you shoot a three). I thought LeBron was bad, but now I don’t really mind him compred to Wade. What makes it worse is how much the national media kisses his rear. On ESPN this morning, the ticker on the bottom of sportscenter said “Wade charged with flagrent foul for block on Mo Evans.” It was not a block…it was an unncessary and dangerous foul. I’m also tired of watching the series on TNT…they don’t give any respect to anyone except D-Wade. I think Jermaine O’Neal is having a great series but no one is talking about that. The sideline reporter (Reggie Miller’s sister) ONLY reported on D-Wade’s back the entire game. No mention on Al Horford’s injury until the very end of the game. That took balls to shoot those free throws so that he could come back in the game later if the team needed it.

Obviously… he missed one out of about 5 thunderous posterizing dunks on the defensless crybabies that the heat have become. As Jay Z would say…. You know the type… loud as a motorbike… but couldn’t bust a grape in a fruit fight.
Josh didn’t stand on the table and scream this is my house. He didn’t look in to the camera. It’s the NBA… showboat dunks…are required elements of all the large paychecks.

It’s funny how certain athletes you had respect for show their true colors and make you hate them. I used to have a great deal of respect for Kevin Garnett (he used to play pick up games of basketball with my cousins in south carolina). All during the playoffs last year he was the main crybaby/villian of the celtics (paul pierce was a close second) and completely changed my perception of him with his stlye of play (elbowing zaza, crying about non-calls, and trying to intimidate us with his soft style of play).Wade was a primary contributor on the olympic gold medal team last summer and is tarnishing that image with his constant pouting over calls in this series (this is not 2006). He could take a lesson in humility from joe johnson who doesn’t complain when he get’s fouled but, puts the onus on the refs when he drives to the basket.

I had no problem with Josh betweem the legger. Josh was just trying to entertain the home crowd. This is the NBA. The fans paid their money to be entertained. There is alot of showboating in the professional sports. Also, I witness the Heat’s Coach crying on TV, I guess he is trying to use what he can to get his team motivated. Go Hawks.

DWade and co. hate it when people throw down Dunks against inferior teams unless its a really inferior team trying to represent their country, like Lithuania or Canada… then you can throw down a windmill when you’re up by 20. They hate it when you don’t show sportsmanship in your house, as long as that doesn’t include jumping up on scorers tables, pounding your chest, and screaming.
By the way, Sekou, you should have published Israel Gutierrez’ article before Game 5 where he guaranteed a Wade-James matchup in Round 2 and said that “these are still the Hawks we are talking about”, Sekou wouldn’t say that about the Heat, nor should he, but lets hold Israel accountable for his insults.

The problem with the dunk is that it screams me first. Can you imagine Smith pulling that stunt on a Larry Bird led team? A Joe Dumars led team? A Michael Jordon led team?
Do we need to invoke the name of Bill Russell and speculate what he might have done if Smith so much as even thought about it, much less attempted it, to drive home the point that me first doesn’t win championships?
I think not.

Said it last night, say it again. Nothing wrong with Josh’s b/w the legs. Nothing. Screw the TNT and ESPN crew. They all dying at the thought of Hawks playing Cleveland.

Wade takes aim at Hawks’ tactics, Heat’s mind-set
Click-2-Listen
By CHRIS PERKINS
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

MIAMI — Dwyane Wade had a razor-sharp edge Thursday, and the Heat’s battered All-Star guard made precision cuts on everyone in his sights.
Wade had particular disdain for Atlanta guard Mario West, who celebrated after Wade missed a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer in Wednesday’s Game 5, which the Heat lost 106-91. The Hawks had a 23-point lead at the time.

What are these?
Wade said the second-year guard “has not been a factor” in this series. He called West’s celebration “funny” and ridiculed his judgment.
“What is this game coming to?” Wade asked rhetorically.
Wade was also peeved that Atlanta forward Josh Smith tried a between-the-legs dunk in the fourth quarter when the Hawks still had a 20-point lead.
“It is (disrespectful),” Wade said, “and one thing I go back to is something my high-school coach always told me: Act like you’ve done something before.”
This is what playoff basketball does to the usually docile Wade. And you can expect him to take that edge to the court in Game 6 of the Miami-Atlanta first-round playoff series at 8 p.m. Friday at AmericanAirlines Arena.
For the Heat, which trails in the best-of-seven series 3-2, it’s a win-or-it’s-over game. Perhaps realizing that he has has nothing to lose, Wade unloaded Thursday.
Wade said the Hawks have some “unprofessional” things they need to address. He said Hawks roughhousing center Zaza Pachulia is “knocking people out.” And said he wants to see more out of his young teammates, particularly rookies Michael Beasley and Mario Chalmers.
“If it seems like I’m calling them out, I’m not calling them out,” Wade said, “but I want to see our young guys play like it’s Game 6 of the playoffs.
“If ‘Rio says he’s won a national championship (at Kansas), well, I want to see him play like it. I want to see Michael play. It’s not about making shots. It’s about your intensity. It’s about your focus. And I want to see our young guys focused and playing with energy.”
Wade, who has been battling back spasms the past two games, said he felt better Thursday. And he took a defiant tone toward the pain.
“I’m at the point where whatever is wrong with me, it doesn’t even matter at this point,” he said.
In that spirit, Wade almost implored his teammates to get more physical for Game 6.
“Zaza Pachulia is knocking people out,” Wade said. “It’s as simple as that. I’m not telling my teammates to knock him out, but when he comes down the paint at, least make sure he feels us.”

He’s lucky some one didnt try and take him out after his long stare following his lucky deep three in game 2.
JJ, Smoove, Mo, Flip, Bibby, and the entire crew will be prepared for a battle. No doubt about it. Time to rise up Hawks…and to all the ignorant Heat fans, TNT, and ESPN…NOW YOU KNOW…

He has fake some many injuries until he can’t remember which injury his suppose to complain about… LOL
Just like in football, if you down like the touchdown celebration then don’t the guy score. Instead of DWade doing that he takes the Roy Williams route and hit the guy during the celebration….lol
If he has a problem with Mario celebration than he should have made the shot.
If he has a problem with Josh b/w the legs then he should have gotten back on defense and defended it but I don’t blame him for staying clear of Josh after he ran into him early in the game and got knock damn near into next week….lol

Josh better be careful. If those clowns get a chance to put him down, they’ll put him down hard. Gusman354, if indeed that is your real name, nice to know that Wade is mad. If my team had gotten it’s butt smeared like yours did in the last two games, I’d be made too. Oh, wait, the Heat did smear out backsides in games two and three, but here’s where the difference comes in, the Hawks didn’t try to put any of your guys out of commission, they just played better. The Heat might want to take that approach rather than seeing which of us they can send to the hospital next.

Actually the near-miss Josh dunk we SHOULD be buzzing about right now is the one he attempted over Jermaine O’Neal and Michael Beasley in the first half. He missed the dunk and got fouled, but if he had made that, it would have been one of the greatest in-game dunks of all time, because of where he began his jump and who he was jumping over.

Josh Smith is leading the team in ppg, spg, bpg and 2nd in rpg. He is also shooting 73% from the line. Yet everybody wants to talk about a missed dunk. Talk about him being the one to carry Al to the bench and the ft line. Talk about him defending his teammates when Magliore has tried to bully the Hawks. He has been the Hawks best player in the playoffs. Yet everybody wants to talk aboout the negative. He does a lot wrong. There is no question about that but he also has done a lot right. When he is wrong let him have but any true fan would at least have to respect what he has done for the Hawks in the playoffs.
By the way Dick Stockton needs to retire. You also should not be allowed to be a commentator for teams that have fired you. You might be a little biased.

Hawksfan,
in distant memory now but, something like people are making it a big deal when it really isnt. he saw no difference in this to someone beating there chest running down the court. he even said, he couldnt see the difference between it and a 360..he was saying its Josh Smith for crying out loud, he does these dunks… just was making obvious points. said that if MIA had such an issue with it, they wouldnt have allowed Joe a break away yolk the very next play…
Zack,
i tried to bring that to the attention of Sekou in my 4.30.09 11:43am post.. the Hawks have gotten tougher so should the staff… Bob sure did the other night when JO fouled, well, assaulted ZaZa… he yelled over to Woody, “that was a flagrant Woody!!!”, he tried to do it off air and is clearly getting pissed at the officiating. when speaking of James Jones 2 4 pt plays he said Bibby didnt even touch him that one time… funny stuff…
Najeh,
i blogged about it yesterday… i said if he would have thrown that bad boy down, i would have cut the TV off and gone to sleep, and it would have been the dunk of the decade… and boy was he close to finishing it…

It seems that the hawks are the underdog in this series with the way TNT,espn, etc. are covering the games. A bit depressing how they treat the team but I think this mentality would change in the 2nd round vs the cavs.
Btw, kudos to JJ for getting over his slump in the playoffs. Hope his agressiveness continues to the to game6 and eventually to the 2nd round against the bigger but slower SGs of the cavs.

Sekou, not to get off subject, but after watching the Bulls/Celts series I can’t help but to think that Chicago has a better foundation than we do going forward.
Point guard and center are probably the two hardest positions to fill with star players. Rose, as a rookie, is already one of the best PG’s in the league — while the Hawks ponder whether to resign an aging Bibby for big bucks or to hope Law can finally come through. I love Al Horford, but is he meant to play center for the rest of his career? It’s beginning to look like his old teammate (Noah) might end up being beter suited for the position — he has really suprised me with his intensity non-stop movement.
How do you see the PG & C positions evolving for the Hawks in the future?

Sekou, I think the refs will have to earn their paychecks tonight. I can see things getting VERY chippy early on and if it isn’t addressed early, it will get out of hand.
I saw Stern on his blackberry during the Hawks game and I thought he was calling in the fix to make sure his superstar made it to the next round. Maybe he was just calling ahead for Game 6. I think TNT will close up shop in depression if Wade loses. As for Gusman with his, “Where is J Smoove’s commercials with Charles Barkley?” Who cares about that crap? That is the whole reason Barkley is all up on him every night we play. The problem with ESPN and TNT is that they don’t even try to hide their bias.

The Hawks are the better team, and even though we don’t have a superstar like DWade, we have better players overall and more balance. If we take advantage of that balance, maintain good ball movement, run and play the type of DEF we’re capable of playing, we’ll win. Without Marvin, Acie and maybe Horford, we might not win in a blowout, but we can certainly win.
It looks like the network is trying to milk DWade for every once of coverage since it appears he and the Heat might be eliminated tonight.

Jalen Rose is the only “analyst” that makes any sense…Rose put the entire Josh Smith missed dunk situation into excellent perspective. He said something along the lines of “I have no problem with Josh Smith because he is an athlete that can make that dunk. If it were someone who was physically unable to do it, then I would have a prolem. I would advise him to not miss it next time.”
Rose also pointed out that if the Heat didnt like it, they should have gotten back on defense as on the next play they gave up a fast break dunk to Joe Johnson.
If you missed the Bulls-Celtics game last night you missed an instant classic.

After those words by Wade, I think the refs are going to be calling everything early. Technicals are going to be flying, people are going to get tossed. I actually think we’ll have an advantage in this area, JS is really the only person I’m worried about. If JJ comes out with his normal demeanor, we should have not problem with any of our people getting tossed. Hopefully we can weather the early storm and keep our focus. This is just one basketball game, we need to execute and rebound. I think the more Wade talks the more he’s going to shoot which is better for us!! I’m worried more about O’Neal scoring 20+, than Wade scoring 40+!!

I am sure many of you share my feelings that the Josh Smith dunk attempt is getting way too much pub? F the Heat for making it such a big deal. Bush league by them even talking about it.

I’m a Georgia native and ATL fan who moved down to Jupiter, Florida 5 years ago. It’s funny hearing the miami perspective on things. 790 AM out of Miami got Steve Holman on air yesterday and were expecting to rip the guy. When he came on the air, the hosts and even the “angry” callers loved him. They continuously mock Wade for his theatrics. It reminds me of seeing a Euro soccer match on TV, when they carry a player off in a stretcher and he returns 10 minutes later.

Astro Joe and Melvin — Is there any doubt in your mind that Rose will be a premier point guard for many years to come? The Hawks have to choose between an aging Bibby who will be a FA (15 mil.salary this yr.) or Law — and nobody knows if he will become an elite PG or not.
I’m not saying Noah is better than Horford, in fact, until recently, I thought it was no contest. Noah does seem like he is growing into a true center and I am very surprised at his play lately. I questioned his attitude at first, but it is clear that he gives it his all on every play. When he took it the length of the court for the slam in the 3rd overtime — my jaw dropped. Do ya’ll think Horford should play at center for his entire career?

I don’t know about y’all, but I’m actually feeling pretty good about the Hawks chances tonight (even with us being without two starters). The Hawks have momentum and after game 5 I would have said that we could have possibly been in trouble but after hearing all the promises and talking from Wade and Heat players what was already going to be a lot of pressure on them to win this game is already piling on even more.
With all those promises and Wade going on at the mouth the Heat BETTER blow us out. Wade better drop about 40+ points with all the talk that I keep hearing. There’s going to be a lot of heat and pressure on those guys while the Hawks should be able to go in and play loose. Yeah, we’re trying to close the series out tonight, but even with a Hawks loss they get to come back home to where they play well. Now, I’m hoping they don’t keep that in the back of their head because I want to see a win so we can finally be done with the Heat, but I think the Heat putting all of this pressure on themselves could be their undoing. So, that arena better be rocking tonight and the Heat BETTER do what they are saying they are going to do. If they don’t we’ll all get to sit back and laugh in their faces, and I’m hoping…hoping that Smoove have another opportunity to do that dunk in a Hawks win tonight (just so I can get another good laugh at the Heat)

GUSMAN354-you seem to have a very short memory. Weren’t your beloved Heat waiting for the Hawks in gm 4 when we gave them that serious butt whipping on their own home court? I guess you clowns enjoy getting spanked.

Well, well, y’all didn’t get that win on Friday night like you thought Atlanta. What’s up!!!!!!! This game was always destined to go 7 and neither the Hawks nor the Heat will beat King James and the Cleveland Cavaliers anyway. The way they are beating up on each other like there is not another round to go is unbelievable. It’s really down right crazy.
