Zaza Pachulia and the Hawks soared Monday night over the Heat in Miami. Now all they have to do is produce an encore Wednesday night at home.
MIAMI - Mike Bibby got cracked in the nose and poked in the eye.
Josh Smith got the skin on the side of his face scratched off in three places.
Joe Johnson finished the game hobbling and was later spotted with his right foot in a bucket of ice before he was sent off to get examined to determine the extent of the damage.
Everyone saw Zaza Pachulia’s right eye, darkened around the edges by an unidentified flying object (or an errant elbow) that he doesn’t remember connecting.
Even Hawks equipment man extraordinaire Zac Walsh went down during the game (food poisoning) and was reportedly left behind at a local hospital to recover.
Oh, yeah, the Hawks paid the price for their monumental 81-71 Game 4 win at AmericanAirlines Arena a couple hours ago.
They paid dearly.
And they’d gladly do it again and again and again, if it means snatching back home court advantage in their first round playoff series against the Miami Heat every time.
Things got physical Monday night and the Hawks rose to the challenge, leading from start to finish in a wild game that could eventually define their season.
Obviously, there’s plenty of work still to be done.
But none of it would be possible without what on Monday night.
“Well, it’s 2-2 in the series and you say that we have the home court advantage now,” said Pachulia, the Hawks’ Game 4 hero, “but we did have home court advantage after Game 1 and everybody thought we were going to win two games at home. But we lost [Game 2] at home. We still have to win two more games. We have to use our advantage and play the same way we played [to win Game 4].”
If that means sacrificing their bodies again, so be it.
“Well, it wasn’t obvious when it happened,” Pachulia said of his black eye, “and it happened in Game 3. I just felt it burning during the game and then I touched my eye and it was already swollen. But watching the tape I think happened on the rebound when me and James Jones were fighting for it. It happens, though, I look like Rocky Balboa.”
Pachulia set the tone with his rugged play early. And the Heat felt it, particularly Heat center Jermaine O’Neal, who couldn’t push the bigger Pachulia around the way he did Al Horford in Games 2 and 3.
“He was tough down there,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of Pachulia. “He was pretty much doing everything in traffic. Bodies were flying. Loose balls, he seemed like he came up with every one of them. He had a major impact on the game. Eighteen rebounds … he played very well.”
Well enough to help the Hawks’ bench crew outscore the Heat’s reserves a whopping 25-2. This after being outscored 37-20 in Game 3.
“They made all the plays,” Jones said. “Zaza was the guy who every time they needed a big play, he made it. Whether it was a rebound, a tip or a layup, he was the momentum breaker tonight and i think he kind of sealed our fate.”
NOT THAT THE HAWKS DIDN’T TRY and give this one away with their inexplicable power failure just before halftime.
Leading by 21 points (44-23) with 4:37 to play before the break, the Hawks watched the Heat go on a 19-2 run to pull to within four points, 46-42 at halftime – and that includes those crazy four-point plays in 11 seconds by Jones to energize the crowd and frighten Hawks fans around the globe.
But the Hawks never surrendered their lead. They kept their composure in a hostile environment, showcasing a mettle and maturity that had been lacking previously.
“We played defense like we did in Game 1,” Smith said. “We just got after them the whole game. We took control of the game from the tip and we had to do that to get the fans out of it early. Fighting through adversity shows the character of this team. That was a big win for us.”
BACK-TO-BACK wins for Wade’s team produced back spasms for the Heat superstar Monday night.
That might explain his 9-for-26 shooting effort, and yes, it was as dismal as it looked on the stat sheet. But how bad was Wade’s back if he could find a way to launch 26 shots?
As bad as his back was, the Hawks’ defense on Wade was that sound.
“We just switched off the pick-and-rolls,” Johnson said. “We even had our [centers] out there guarding him at times.”
Now comes the hard part, doing it again Wednesday night in Game 5.

I’ve seen almost every player discussed in this thread except for Horford — where was he last night? So now people say Zaza is stouter in the hole?? — If thats the case – we’re doomed

Tiger, the HAWKS are having a great season and any true HAWKS fan knows it. The issue with Woody is a long time HAWKS fan you cannot jump on the Woody Wagon without taking into account the last few seasons where everytime you hoped it would be Woodys last. We are in a better place this year than last year, but I believe we could be in a greater place with a greater talent leading the HAWKS!

As a Gator (Insert Jorts joke here) I am a big fan of HORFORD. I appreciate the championship mentality he has brought last year and showed everynight against the best in the NBA. I haven’t seen as much of his championship swagger this year and hope he brings it out for the rest of the post season.
GET IT DONE HAWKS!

East ATL Fan,
I don’t really think its racist. I believe it has more to do with lack of basketball knowledge and just being unrealistic. That’s what fans do. They call for people to be fired.
Again, look at the scrubbs that Woodson has had to work with the last 4 years(Other than this season) and tell me a coach who could have done better. Thought so.

Who’s the guy that kept saying Zaza was a waste of space on this team. Wouldn’t have won that game without him last night.
Marvin better show up or resigning him will not be a priority next season. If they can win without him why not spend the money elsewhere.

I do have to say that I agree with Reality on how uncharateristic the HEAT played. Wade held the ball on an out-of-bounds play for 5 secs, for no real reason. Then the next HEAT posession he throw the ball to no one. Later, J Jones fouls Bibby when the shot clock was almost at 0 with 23secs in the game??? (Bibby wasn’t even shooting?) J Jones fouled out on that play???
The HAWKS did a good job of closing down the lane and JSmoove had some great blocks on O’Neal. I hope the HAWKS can bring the same concept on defense Wed night.
As for the HAWKS, I still believe this is all part of the maturing process and the HAWKS really need to continue to improve on the offensive end. I hope they really understand how important it is to run their sets hard every possession. They can’t just dump the ball into the post, then watch. They really have to get a lot of movement on every Set.
I still don’t think Woody is the coach for this team, but I’m along for the ride anyways.
GO HAWKS!!!

I know that Woody does not get much love on this blog but I have to say that I heard him tell Cheryl Miller that while he did not like the foul calls his team could not get caught up in the bad plays but had to fight through it. That was right on. Last night this team could have folded at the beginning of the third quarter. I did not think they would have it in them to win this series after the last two games. I have actually stayed away from this blog after the last two losses because I was sure that most people here would really be down on this team and at this point I did not want to hear it. I was trying to think of a way the team would benefit from a lost series. But this Hawks team will kill you by how hot and cold they run. Tonight they had me leaning on the side of them being a tough bunch of guys who really deserve our support as long as they last in the playoffs.
I remember back in the 1980’s ween the Celtics and Lakers were really going after it strong. The first game of the finals that year was a total blowout of the Celtics by the Lakers. I thought there was no way the Celtics would win the series. I started to post a warning after the first game that the team could not get too high after that performance because it was just one game. Events the next two games proved the rightness of that thought. But the Hawks have had the fortitude to battle back against terrific odds. And the fight continues. Will the fans be the sixth man Wednesday night?

What’s up all. The crowd was ready to explode from the beginning. We did try to get them going. There just wasn’t much to be loud about. Things got a bit crazy at the end of the first half and the start of the second but the Heat went right back to sleep in the 3rd quarter.
I have to say though, the Hawks came out ready for summer vacation in the first quarter. The Heat was playing so awful and I kept turning to my friend wondering how on Earth we were still only down by 2 or 3. If the Heat had come out ready to play, they would have trashed Atlanta.
But then, the Hawks woke up a bit and the Heat continued to slumber, with the exception of Jones and O’Neal. Wade was off, back problems or no. I didn’t notice or hear anything about back problems until after the game. Take that however you like.
Anyway, I told you Dan and Reality that we had a letdown coming. I feel we’ll be ready for Game 5 though. So now Hawks fans, you know your team. What can we expect from them tomorrow night?

Sekou, in another article you stated that the players only meeting might have been the spark they needed. As I was watching the game Cheryl Miller said she spoke to Mo Evans about that meeting and she said that Mo thought the tone was kind of soft, so I don’t think it was that meeting. I believe that Mo said something at halftime because he seemed upset when Cheryl was talking to him after the Heat made that questionable comeback at the half.

Guys, get over the ‘fire Woody theme’….everybody knows what kind of coach he is, but they have improved each year, and now they have won their first road playoff game. Not everyone does that. Yes, Chicago and Miami can get a bit lucky with the coaching they have, but Woody will be here next year, so let’s just move away from that worn-out agendy we have here.
To be able to win without Marvin is noteworthy. Our bench really stepped up last night. Everyone contributed. That is when we play our best. How many guys in double figures? The points have to be spread out and its good to see we are not a JJ-driven team. Guys are maturing, learning as they go.
While I don’t think Miami is very good, I think we have improved a lot because we don’t play very well against this team.
Now we have a chance to really get our big guns to contribute and like Game 1, when they do, this is a mismatched series.
We are better than Wade and the journeymen. We know it and we need to now go out and show it. No more injury excuses because Wade is beat up.
I like what I saw last night, with all the variables that it took to win.
And if you name ANYONE other than Zaza as player of the game last night, you just don’t know basketball. We would have lost without him last night.

Great comeback, I had given up on the Hawks. Thank God for ZaZa and Flip Murray. I would rather have the ball in Flip Murray’s hands at the end of a game than Joe Johnson. Josh needs to realize that he should never shoot the ball from outside of 7ft from the rim. He’s deadly inside and should keep his offensive game there. Hey Sekous, what are the odds than Marvin plays in Game 5?

The Hawks pulled it off last night for the same reason they will win the series – superior team top to bottom. There are very few players who can win a playoff series by themselves; in fact, other than Jordan I can’t really think of any. Play stifling defense on the Heat’s stars and take care of the ball on offense, and you’re golden. I don’t know if, or how badly, Wade is hurt, but he didn’t get a clean look at the basket all night. The Hawks keep that up and we’re set.
Also, let’s take SS’ advice and stay on hoops. There’s only one guy lobbing these bombs into the room, so it shouldn’t be hard to ignore him.

JM: 1) Mo Evans is probably trying to be a leader (and possibly could be a good one) but I doubt JJ, Bibby or Josh are listening. He’s new and comes off the bench.
He might be new to the team but it’s not as he’s some green rookie that has no experience whatsoever. I think Mo did a great interview with Cheryl Miller while trying to keep his own emotions in check about the efeect of losing the lead. He said that the team couldn’t let the officials take them out of the game and for the most part that is what the team did

Watching last night’s game, I told Ray early in the 4th, that if Miami lost, it would be because they went away from JO.
And so it seemed.
The Hawks played solid on D and Zaza was a MAN, but I’m afraid if the Heat had forced it in to JO for most of the 4th, it would have been a different game. We need badly to solve him. And we need to make him play D, so he’ll have less legs for his own shots.

“Is it me, or shouldn’t the Hawks learn how to set a pick for Joe Johnson? ”
This is a very good point that has been made on this blog before… Bibby and Zaza are the only Hawks who set good screens, and half of Zaza’s screens are moving screens that are not called. Josh Smith and Al Horford in particular are very bad for their size at setting screens. Just a fundamental thing that they need to learn.

“Give JJ just 3 more FT attempts and his average would climb to 24 ppg.”
If JJ attacked the rim instead of shooting jumpers and floaters all day, he probably would get fouled more and average 3 more FT attempts. Players like Wade drive to the hoop with the primary intention of drawing contact. That’s just not Joe’s game. Sure, Wade does draw phantom calls that Joe wouldn’t get every now and then, but that doesn’t account for a difference of three free throws per game over the entire season.
