The great (leadership) debate

Don't let the turtleneck sweater fool you. John Shaft was a bad man!

Don't let the turtleneck sweater fool you. John Shaft is a bad man!

MIAMI - Long after his Miami Heat had finished wiping the AmericanAirlines Arena floor with the Hawks Saturday night, Dwyane Wade said something that crystalized the difference between these two playoff combatants.

Asked about the leadership he provides for his team, the Heat superstar described his evolution as a team leader so perfectly, it almost sounded as if a Hollywood script writer had penned the response for him.

“One thing about being a leader is that it’s 24/7, 365 days a year,” Wade said. “It never stops. I was very disappointed with myself in Game 1. I was quiet, and that is not what my team needs. In Game 2 and Game 3 I took it upon myself to make sure that my voice is heard. To drive the points the coaches made and make sure they hear it again before they get on the court.”

You won’t hear anything resembling that from the Hawks. They don’t have a vocal leader in the mold of Wade (they don’t have a player with game like Wade’s either, but we all knew that going into this series). So their won’t be anyone rescuing the Hawks from themselves between now and the start of Monday night’s epically important Game 4 (a third straight loss by the Hawks spells almost certain doom in this series).

All those cliches about leaders being born and not bred don’t register in this case. Leaders emerge in times like this. Leaders rise to the occasion and impose their will in times like this. Leaders of men and leading men are two distinctly different beings in the NBA landscape and beyond.

Wade’s both a leader of men and a leading man. He’s John Shaft (talk about a leader of men and a leading man) in a pair of funky looking shoes and without the sideburns. There are a handful of Shafts in the NBA these days (Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, DWade, Chauncey Billups and Paul Pierce come to mind with others floating in and out of the Shaftosphere). The mettle required of your team leader in the playoffs isn’t hard to spot. And Hawks’ captain and All-Star Joe Johnson has yet to show if he has it in him in this series.

The contrast between his demeanor Sunday and that of Wade over the past few days was striking. Wade vowed to revive his crew after that humiliating, 26-point loss in Game 1 and has done exactly that with two backbreaking efforts since then. Johnson didn’t sound a similar alarm Sunday when asked if he was ready to do it himself, speaking in terms of “we” and “us” when it’s clear that he has to pick up the mantle and carry his team back to even in this series.

“We’ve just got to grow up, man,” Johnson said, his voice trailing off with every word. “We hit a little adversity and now it’s as if we’re out of it. But we have to think positive the rest of the way. You’ve just got to believe. And we have to put it in the guys who have never been in this situation and we have to make them believe we can do this. We have to keep talking to them and keep putting confidence into them.”

The words are fine, but in the playoffs a man can only be judged by his actions.

Two of these guys will face off in the next round and the third will get to watch it from home.

Two of these guys will face off in the next round and the third will get to watch it from home.

AND NOW, A MOMENT OF SILENCE for the Detroit Pistons.

James and his Cavaliers tossed the last shovel of dirt on a deceased Eastern Conference behemoth Sunday afternoon at the Palace of Auburn Hills, sweeping the Pistons out of the playoffs in four games.

It’s only fitting that the Cavaliers did the honors, seeing as how they were the first team expose the flaws of the once-mighty Pistons (in the Eastern Conference finals a couple years ago). The interesting thing going forward is what direction the Pistons go with their rebuilding project.

They’ll have plenty of cap space now that the Allen Iverson deal/fiasco is finally over. I suspect Pistons boss Joe Dumars has a plan mapped out already, and there’s no doubt it includes some big names (wish I knew which ones).

It’s certainly going to make this summer a bit more intriguing come July 1, when free agency begins. It’s supposed to be a sleepy summer with everyone waiting on the 2010 free agent crop. But why wait when you can make a splash now?

THE MORNING AFTER GOING DOWN 2-1 IN A PLAYOFF SERIES might seem like an odd time to have a players’ only team meeting, but Hawks coach Mike Woodson gave the session his blessing after the Hawks’ Sunday practice.

”They’ll meet today and try to figure out some things amongst them,” Woodson said. “For me, from a coaching standpoint, this is not the time for me to scream and yell and curse guys out. We’re right where we need to be. We just have to figure out [Monday] night’s game.”

Secret meetings? Josh Smith and the Hawks are pulling out all the stops to get back into this series.

Secret meetings? Josh Smith and the Hawks are pulling out all the stops to get back into this series.

Johnson didn’t give up the particulars of the time or place and barely acknowledged that any meeting would be taking place. Sorting out whatever internal issues they need to before Game 4 is an excellent idea. Because if it’s going to take a secret meeting to get the Hawks back to playing like they did in Game 1, so be it (no one wants to see one-sided blowouts in the playoffs, well I don’t).

”We beat them pretty bad in Game 1, and they beat us pretty bad in Game 3,” Josh Smith said Sunday. So we’re even. We just have to look at ourselves as individuals and as teammates and come together with a solution. There has to be a philosophy where we have each other’s back. In Game 2 it was a hostile environment in Atlanta, it was just them and the crowd. They played together and everything clicked. They had fun. We have to do the same thing.

”Our backs are against the wall. What are we made of? Are we going to fold and let them win, or do we step up and show them this is going to be a series and turn it around?

WOODSON WAS IN FULL SPIN MODE Sunday, casting the Heat as the veteran crew with all the playoff seasoning and his bunch (everyone knows the Hawks are youngest team in the Eastern Conference postseason field) as the “underdogs” according to my man Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel.

When asked about the Heat’s supporting cast Woodson said, “When you have O’Neal, who has been a six or seven-time All-Star, and [Udonis] Haslem who has played championship basketball, they have veteran guys who have been through the battles. My guys haven’t been battle tested. This is something new for our team. When I came into the series I thought we could make it to the next round. I want them to think that too. This series is a long way from being over if we take care of business tomorrow.”

Are you buying what Mike Woodson is selling?

Are you buying what Mike Woodson is selling?

If this was some master media stroke to ease the pressure on his team, consider that mission accomplished. But it didn’t look that way to me. I honestly didn’t hear it that way. Woodson’s comments on how his team would bounce back against the Heat seemed far more interesting to anyway.

”Our team has been committed all year long, so I’m not ready to put them out to pasture so fast,” he said.” They have been committed. We’ve had some tough times and some tough games, stretches where we didn’t play well. And we bounced back. We haven’t played well the past few games. We have to find what we’re made of. Until we’re eliminated I’m going to keep fighting and I’m going to push them to keep fighting.

”Again, when we won the first game, I’m sure they were down after that. They had to be thinking we had to win three more to get to the next round. I’m thinking the same thing. I have to get these guys thinking the right way. The last two games, we’ve been kind of punched out a little bit. We have to rebound.”

Hawks stinking up the joint really bad right now. Game 3 was shamefull, worse than game 2. I could not stomach watching it till the end, so savage was the massacre. Hawks do this to us every time, take us up on a high, then drop us down on a low. If or when they get knocked out of the 1st round, Woody’s head should be the first to roll.

Hawks don’t win tonite and the series is over. Hawks have allowed Heat fans to come to this blog and punk us, and given more fodder to the TNT studio crew that already hates on us to feed on. Thanks very much Atlanta Hawks.

Still love the team, but hating the funk they are in now. It’s one thing to lose a playoff game, but another to get blown out on national tv.

Once Hawks gets knocked out, who we fans going to be rooting for? Personally, my allegiance will switch to Chicago and Cleveland. Love how the Bulls are playing the champs. Those boys got heart, something I think Hawks lost after Game 1. Guess the NBA will get its dream matchup. Clevaland versus Heat in the second round.

vava74: strong words, my brother

1) Where is this hard foul everyone talks about? We are a SOFT basketball team–a team coached by a top student of the legendary Larry Brown

2) Expect more Josh Smith trash tonight–out-of-control post moves, bricked layups, but most importantly he will complain to the refs on EVERY SINGLE NO-CALL

3) We have no post presence. Horford gets the ball so little that he shoots every time he gets it

HOW TO WIN TONIGHT:

SWITCH ON EVERY PLAY
PUT SMOOVE’S LENGTH ON J’ONEAL.
LET JOE STAY ON WADE. WADE DOES NOT SCORE WITH JOE ON HIM (I I THINK).
NO DOUBLE-TEAMING
RUN MORE OFFENSIVE SEQUENCES.

The one good thing about Chillz is he f’ing cut to the basket. No one on this team does this. If Joe and Flip are in at the same time, there is no ball movement. Same with Bib

Hey vava74,

2 questions:
1. Did the NBA hire a 3pt shooting coach for Wade for the playoffs?
2. Did the NBA secretly pay Joe Johnson to grow a vagina?

Teh Refs!! Teh NBA!!! Conspiracy Theories!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

look one win fixes this and changes the complexion completely. wont count the guys out until they cant muster up a win on the road. i know it is a tall order but these guys have gotten up off the floor before.

if not then we begin to hash it out. it usually isnt a direct line going up for most doing it the ay the hawks have. too many examples otherwise.

Two examples of Woody ignoring his assistants.
1) Last year, he said he ignored his assistants’ plea to play the bench more.
2) At halftime (I think it was game 2), he said there was a raging debate about double teaming Wade, and he made the decision that he was not going to.

Woody always makes excuses. Last year playoffs, before a game in Boston, he said everybody wants to talk about the Hawks like they’re so good (because they won games 3 and 4), but he said we’re not, and we’re still young. And now he wants to talk about our guys not being battle tested? Whose fault is that?

Think about this. Acie Law has been on 2 playoff teams, but has Acie Law really played in the playoffs? What about Mario? Or Solo? How guys get battle tested is if they get PT when it counts. And Woody has failed miserably.

My only concern is that if the Hawks come back and win this series, Woody will be back next year, with more excuses, no offensive system, JJ still top 2 or 3 in minutes played, and no bench.

Ray, you must be popular, because there always seems to be someone on here trying to be you.

Dont get me wrong here the hawks did get smoked in game 2 and 3. there are positives to take from those games tho… especially game 3 when we played d and got some fast break buckets. If we can do that successfully we can win the series but i sure hope woody is gone sometimes soon

Blast, there you are.

Remember after game 1 you told me I was delusional for even thinking the Heat had a chance to win?

Haha, I had to man, sorry. Well, I certainly won’t say the Hawks don’t have a chance, because they do, even though things do not look good for them. I believe the Heat figured them out after Game 2’s victory and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t continue controlling the series.

Anything can happen, but I expect the crowd to be crazy and for the Heat to come out with lots of energy looking for that early knockout punch once again.

Watch for Beasley to finally break out.

I have stated all along that Woodson will never accept the blame for his teams poor performance(s). He is obviously very poor at making adjustments and his lack of bench development (and NO OFFENSIVE sets) have crippled this team. I don’t see how the Hawks will progress with him at the helm…even if they comeback and win this series.

Another thing that concerns me is the fact that we need a players only meeting…in the playoffs! Are you kidding me? We’re not motivated enough, or coached up enough, (or yelled at enough by coaches/team leaders) where we play with intensity?

JJ has been to the playoffs with Phoenix and the Hawks, Flip has been there before, Mo Evans has been there before, Bibby made it to the conference finals. And we still need a players only meeting?

Even if the Hawks win tonight, the issues are still there. We struggle on the road, have no offensive system, no consistency, an underdeveloped bench, and a head coach with limited capabilities. Winning might make us forget about it, but sooner or later, it will rear it’s ugly head again.

I’d replace Woody with any coach who understands what the word “offense” is. And whose defensive gameplan consists of more than just switch on every screen.

I just read at Hawkssquawk that T-Moore says Woody’s staying.

“Terrance Moore on Sportszone said that he has spoken to someone in control of the situation and they told him that Woody is here regardless if the Hawks win or lose this series. Terrence also said that the Hawks are through in this series. Terrence’s final article for the AJC is Tuesday. He is leaving after 25 years to go write nationally for AOL. I’ve never really been that big of a fan so i’m kinda ho hum about it. Guy has got connections though so his statements on Woody may be correct. I hope he’s wrong though.”

So two more blowouts and we get another year of Woody as a consolation prize. I love our ownership situation.

The Hawks have never had a motion offense. They wait for Joe Johnson to pull a rabbit out of a hat far too many times. It’s a one and gun offense and that’s why they lose as much as they win.

I wish Mike Woodson would team up with Utah’s assistant coach for help with the offense; then perhaps the Hawks would be worth my time. As it is now, they specialize in the word “potential”, which is sad.

Sekou is right – it’s time for Joe to step up. Joe came to Atlanta because he wanted to be “the man” and he got the big contract to go along with it. And, although it wasn’t his fault, getting him here really tore the Hawks franchise apart – the owners are still fighting in court. Tonight is where Joe needs to show why he was worth it. I keep seeing the commercial where puts Powe on his back with a crossover and drops a 3-pointer on him. We need to see that Joe Johnson tonight.

I expect a strong game from the Hawks. Their season is on the line tonight. They’ve been getting smacked around in the national media, the Atlanta media, the SoFla media for two days.

The Heat should also come out fired up, looking to put the their foot on the Hawks throats in front of a loud and hostile home croud. Should be the best game of the series basketball-wise for both teams and the first close game of the series.

Melvin, Joe may be the one who gives this team confidence, but Smith has to give them bounce (especially defensively). If you believe that a team MUST play great defense to win on the road (which I do) and if you believe that Smith is the defensive catalyst for the club (which I do), then one could logically conclude that he is the most important factor for this team to gain a road win. And because I believe that most teams spend far more time trying to stop Joe then anyone else on the club, then I truly believe that Smith is the one who needs to elevate his game for us to win in the playoffs. To use a football analogy, teams will first try to stop Michael Turner. If Turner can’t defeat 8 in the box, I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. (Turner isn’t LT, Payton or Emmitt and Joe ain’t LeBron, Kobe or Wade). But I do expect Ryan to step up the passing game as a result of the defensive focus on Turner. Well, I think most teams key on JJ and the backcourt (wouldn’t you if you were scheming against this team)? So I expect Smith to attack the basket, create turnovers on the other end and generally “force that safety out the box”. Joe is not an MVP candidate and no one should have ever expected that of him. He’s not an elite player who can defeat double teams on a nightly basis. Bibby doesn’t have the ability to take over a game anymore. The weight falls on the darn-near $60M man to initiate things (he doesn’t have to shoulder the entire load but he needs to at least “complete a bomb or 2… and not after his team is down 51-29 or the football equivalent at half-time).

I tend to “bash” him because I recognize his importance to the success of my favorite team. And because I believe that he stops himself far more often than opposing teams (or Woody) stop him. And that ticks me off. Pardon me if I don’t applaud what he did after his team was down 51-29 and he produced 0 points and 0 rebounds. I wouldn’t applaud Matt Ryan for having comparable stats after the opposing team just spent the first half concentrating on Michael Turner. If we’re going to win on the road, Smith MUST be at his very best.

Just to let you guys know, I call Mike Woodson and advised him to extend his defense to the half court line and fall back to the three point line and make the three point line be the team’s last line of defense. I also think you guys should give Mike Woodson credit for working with what he got and to not be afraid to use his fast guards on the bench.
