No Marvin, no cry!

The Hawks won't have Marvin Williams tonight and possibly longer.

The Hawks won't have Marvin Williams to lean on.

MIAMI - The Hawks survived 16 games late in the regular-season without Marvin Williams.

Now it’s time to see if they can go the next 48 minutes or so without him.

The Hawks’ starting small forward has a soft black cast on his right wrist, inadvertently matching the American Airlines Arena crowd in their “Black is Back” get up for Game 3 in this first round playoff series.

A nasty fall late in the third quarter of Wednesday’s Game 2 loss to the Heat at Philips Arena will cost Williams this game for sure. There’s no indication of how much time he’ll miss altogether. That hasn’t been made clear as of yet.

Believe it or not, there are more pressing issues for the Hawks right now.

Whether or not the Hawks get overwhelmed by the Heat and this atmosphere that is off the charts crazy right now remains to be seen.

But know this, their road to winning this series has taken a drastic turn without Williams and with Dwyane Wade and his crew feeling the proverbial heat (a cheap one I know, but I couldn’t help myself).

And if you think Game is going to be tough, Game 4 Monday night is going to be dang near impossible, because everyone down here in South Florida is going sense that it’s just a matter of time before the Heat wins this series.

While it’s far from over, this is not the kind of atmosphere (18-4 and counting right now in favor of the Heat) the Hawks could afford to falter in, not with their season on the line over the next 72 hours.

Let the venting begin Hawks fans.

I agree with Mark…bring Mario into the game to give some energy…..do something besides give a deer in the headlights look from the sidelines! Our problems on the road comes down to poor coaching. PATHETIC. I’ve counted at least 8 point blank shots that the Hawks missed in that half. This is just a poorly coached team and it shows in the effort and what these guys run on the floor. We ran a few plays offensively and made a run but I swear as soon as JJ hit the floor we went back to playing 1 on 5 offensive basketball again. To steal something Bob said in last years playoff series “Who’s the team with the composure?” Definitely not these Hawks when theoretically speaking they probably should have a lot more composure than what they are showing

Woody should take the fall for all this, but honestly HORFORD and JOSH have not LOW POST SKILLS.

Boston won last year because of a true low post presence . KG

Lakers got to the finals because the added a true low post presence. PAUL GASOL

When the Pistons won it all a few years ago, it was because they added a true low post presence. RASHEED WALLACE.

I’ve never seen a so called captain and all star (Joe Johnson) have so many excuses made for him when he does not perform to the level expected of an all star and team captain. It’s excuses made by posters here that he plays to many minutes or he had to guard the other teams best player, Woody did not get him open looks. Lets be clear true stars, ballers, players, however you classify them make sure there presence is felt by the officials and the oppossing team when they step in the building. Joe has to become the guy and stop being one of the guys and exhibit that in his play(no excuses). He says he came here to lead and show he could be the guy to build around but truth be told his play and leadership is suspect. Seems alot of folks are lowering there expectations for Joe rather than holding him accountable to maintain high standards of play. It’s tough for me a fan of Joe Johnson to watch a guy with this much talent not have that edge and savy needed for his team reach that next plateau but it’s not to late hopefully he ‘ll figure it out or someone respected in the organization or league will feed him some food for thought. This is a team sport and he can not win by himself but the Hawks success starts with him. If your star can’t get calls at the end of the game, if he seems to waver when the lights are bright is he really a star?

Woody is incapable of doing this. This team should be pushing the tempo of this game and scrambling on D – which is what they did in game 1. We could be a decent half court team…with the right plays. I don’t think getting hyped is the problem for the Hawks because I do believe they were up for this game. The problem for this team is that they don’t know how to play with any composure when they’re hyped. Just look at the first few minutes of the game – Horford shoots an air ball, Mo blows two layup opportunities or easy conversions by being in a big rush, and then JJ is all over the place. The only consistent guys have been Bibby, Flip, and Zaza. I’m curious to see if the Hawks will go ahead and roller and spread their legs here in this second half or do they come out with some heart.

I’m not blaming Woody for everything, but if the players are not/cannot respond to the coach, then something has to give.

However, let’s keep in mind that the Hawks dominated the Heat in game 1, and the Heat came back in game 2, so we can do it.

Coaching is far more vital in the playoffs than the regular season, and it’s even more important in a series featuring the 4 and 5 seeds since they are usually equal in talent and ability. Miami made adjustments after that gm 1 beatdown and they’ve been on a tear since. Woodson has done absolutely nothing and seems to be waitng for them to start missing some of those wide open 3’s. ALL OF YOU WOODSON SUPPORTERS, LIKE SAMUEL, NEED TO FACE THE FACTS. WOODSON DOESN’T HAVE A CLUE HOW TO STOP WHAT’S HAPPENING TO HIS TEAM, AND HIS OFF SYSTEM IS TOO LIMITED TO OVERCOME WHAT MIAMI DEF IS DOING.

I guess it’s up to the players to start pressing, double teaming. I also guess it’ll be up to Acie, West, Solo and Hunter to substitute themselves if they expect to contribute and give our starters adequate rest. THE FEWER PLAYERS YOU USE THE EASIER IT IS FOR THE OPPOSITION TO PREPARE FOR YOU, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY KNOW YOU’RE NOT GOING TO USE THE SAME ROTATION IN THE SAME WAY.

REALITY CHECK. IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE DILUSIONAL ENOUGH TO THINK WE WILL PULL THIS SERIES OUT?

Since I guess my comment is not going to show in between all of these celebs coming on the blog I’ll have to post my comment again.

I refuse to blame this or the last Hawks on the players. Yeah, guys are suppose to make shots, free throws, layups, and play defense but here’s where the blame clearly falls on our pathetic coach. When a guy refuses to put his player in a position where they can play to the best of their ability he’s at fault. I’ve stood up for the guy when he’s done that and our guys just don’t convert but in these past two games this guy has stood up and folded his arms and watched as:

1) D. Wade brings the ball up the floor with no pressure

2) D. Wade gets to wherever he wants on the floor and make open shots

3) Watched his all-star get double teamed for over 96 minutes (2 full games) and done nothing to get open

4) Stuck with a 7 man rotation

5) Made no adjustments

Coach, show that you care man. How do you stay in a zone and let an extremely hot shooting team knock down uncontested shots. In the first game we were constantly pressing these guys and he went away from what worked, but then again that’s his memo. When is Woody going to do something about JJ being doubled over and over again and get away from playing 1 on 5 offense?

I can’t stomach anymore of this garbage anymore. I don’t care if the Hawks come back and win this series and then take the Cavs to 7 games – WOODSON HAS GOT TO GO!

Well, it appears that the Hawks did everything they shouldn’t do, and the Heat did exactly what I was worried they’d do.

Jermaine O’Neal suddenly doesn’t look as washed-up as some of our smug bloggers suggested he would. Hmmmm, shall we continue to think along the lines of “oh, guys like him won’t be able to step up every game?” Haslem did precisely what I said he would: double-double.

Our starting backcourt shot a smokin’ 10-30 from the field, and nobody scored more than 13 points. Everybody who played significant minutes shot badly from the field with the exception of Horford and Evans, who really didn’t take all that many shots comparatively.

Who was it again that was telling me our offense isn’t a problem? Right.

Of course, our defense was awful, and we didn’t rebound worth a crap. In fact, we sucked at EVERYTHING except free throw shooting.

No adjustments were made, whatsoever, and our guys could not get it going anywhere on the court, while listening to a Miami crowd that would not let up. Wade got his teammates involved quickly.

The Heat got it all done with their front five. Now we’re down 2-1, with two more games to go in Miami.

We can’t seem to play team defense when we need to (which is ALL the time). We can’t seem to get our guys into good scoring position.

I’m trying very hard not to go in the direction I want to go right now.

But I think the problems are obvious. Yes, I said “problems”, as in plural. This is not a one-problem issue.

And the series isn’t over, though a loss in the next game will have our backs against the wall, with no room to move. And don’t think the Heat don’t want to close this out at home.

Hawks have to dig deep now. Nothing else will do.

Big Ray, I hoped that the HAWKS would sprout an offensive, but it definitely didn’t happen. The HAWKS have one more at home 2-2-1-1-1, which is obviously needed. The HEAT came out with the energy and the refs were calling nothing at the rim. If O-Neal can play that way 2 more times, this series is over! The HAWKS are going to have to double Wade and O’Neal, and live with the results. Hopefully this is a wakeup call to start running better offensive. I don’t think its going to happen but we can only hope.

Kwooden 1,

Precisely. There were some around here that scoffed mightily at the idea of Jermaine O’Neal being able to play well. They smuggly calculated that his last game was an aberration. Funny, haven’t seen or heard much out of them lately. Apparently that naive attitude was also taken by the Hawks, who were beaten before halftime arrived.

The only way to prevent O’Neal from having that kind of impact is NOT the generic “Woody” approach of “defend him better.” You also have to make him work hard on defense, so that he does not have the extra energy needed to pull his slick moves off.

But no, we will continue to shoot jumpers and not make these guys work. And we won’t be getting the calls. We do not play a good half court offense, despite the apparent insistence of going with one. As I said on the Hawks Hack blog, if you’re going to do that, then you need to see a series of screens, so at least your shooters can get good looks at the basket. Did we do that?

It was a disgusting performance no doubt about it. Game 4 is a huge test for this team…players and coaches alike.

I think this series also has gone a long way in defining what a true superstar looks like and how his energy and performance raises his team’s level of play.

Continuing to lose by large margins on the road in the playoffs suggest to me that there is more than just a coaching problem going on. I would say the problems may have are both structural and constitutional.

I agree with what E said earlier – it did not look like we were contesting very many shots at ALL and we continually allow Wade to get open looks.

It’s also very frustrating that we constantly hear the players and the head coach SAY all of the right things between games, only to then come out with lack of energy, lack of gameplan, and/or lack of execution, the very same things that they have just been talking about fixing. You can only talk the right way for so long. Eventually you have to come out and consistently show that you mean what you say.

It’s still only 2-1, but a lot of things have to turn around for us to have a chance at this point.

2) JJ has low BB IQ too. he keeps on dribbling to a congested paint!! drive and kick! not drive and turnover the ball! trade him!

Despite tonight’s STATS, this team still has incredible PERIMETER DEFENSE!! On practically every play, the Heat had to THINK TWICE before sinking another 3-POINTER. He also have good handles, don’t you notice that when it takes him 20 out 24 seconds to make his move and shoot that SMOOTH FLOATER OR RUNNER SHOT OF HIS. DON’T WE PAY HIM LIKE AN ELITE PLAYER? i hate to say this but Dwayne Wade has taken over this series, He is unstoppable. Its funny how a superstar can completly take over an entire series. I saw Lebron do the same thing against the Pistons a couple of years ago, and watched D-Wade do it the year they won the title. When he is knocking down contested 3’s and knowing he is the most explosive to the basket than any other player in the league, he is just that harder to defend. You can blame whoever you want, but it comes down to a player like Dwayne Wade refusing to lose without a fight.. Gotta give a great player credit…

They are still my Hawks and i will never turn my back on them, I still believe they can win this series. But they are going to have to play team ball, and fight for every possession..

Go Hawks!!!!

The Hawks and some fans didnt think the Heat would shoot this well again. Some didnt think JON would play well again. Were we wrong.

There are some who believe that Woody did a great job this year. I completely disagree. He is getting outcoached by a rookie. Yes, we know the Heat have Dwayne Wade, but we have JJ. And look how the Heat have taken JJ out of the series?

The Heat made adjustments after game 1, and either Woody made no adjustments, or the players are not executing. Maybe the problem is the players, but the truth is, we can’t change players. We can change coaches.

Everyone knows we have no half-court offense. But yet coach refuses to force the tempo. We have no plays to get JJ open shots and we play too much one on one. If we bring Woody back, isn’t it going to be the same thing next season?

Even if the Hawks come back and win this series, I still have no confidence in Woody.

Just to add, I think that a lot of the frustration fans are having as a result of these performances is due to the belief that this team could actually be really good, even as it is now. In fact, there have been several glimpses of greatness from this team and this coach.

I know one of the biggest frustrations that I have is seeing them come out like they did in Game 1, or in the game against Orlando at the beginning of the season, or the game against LA at the end of the season, playing so well and looking so dominant. Then, to watch them stink it up as many times and for as many spurts as they have this season.

It isn’t like we’re dealing with Oklahoma City where we can just say, “OK, they’re bad. Maybe they’ll beat a good team every once in a while, but we know they are not a good NBA team.” It’s the potential for being very solid that we see on paper when looking at the players and from watching many of the very good performances, and then suffering through the stinkfests that seem to come far too often.

I have been converted back to optimism by some of the “real” fans (not to mention the lure of Chik-Fil-A Family Night), and I do not want to be part of the “squish” any longer.

We were THIS close tonight. If it weren’t for a few breaks here and there, we would’ve had ‘em.

It’s tough on the road. At least we fought and gave an effort the fans could be proud of. We were tired and playing without our leader, Marvin Williams.

You can’t win ‘em all. A couple ref calls went against us, and that’s bound to even out in the next game.

I don’t want to be a part-time fan. I want to stand by my team, no matter how much they shame and humiliate me.

I like giving my undying loyalty to such a disciplined group of guys who don’t know the meaning of the word “quit” and a lot of other words, like “double-team” and “ball movement.”

Finally, I also hope the team doesn’t read this blog, because after two straight blowout losses, I don’t want my comments to suggest in any way that they might have played poorly.

Maybe if we say nice things, they won’t know that it didn’t go well, and they will go into Game 4 with a happy feeling.

Go Hawks!

Smith: “We can’t get out of this mess without doing it together.”
Bibby: “Their energy and effort is better than ours right now.”
Bibby: “We let them hit us first again.”
Woodson: “We just didn’t answer the bell.”

Come on guys. We get it – you know what you’re doing wrong. Now you have to ACTUALLY FIX IT

Watching this game, it was painfully obvious that Mike Woodson reviewed the game tape from Game 2, decided everything the Heat did was a fluke, and reverted to the exact same gameplan in Game 3. The Hawks had the same matchup problems, the same inability to close out on 3 point shooters, and the same difficulties scoring as they did in the previous game.

Among the most obvious flaws:

1. Horford got abused by Jermaine O’Neal all game after getting abused by him in Game 2. He is simply too short and not quick enough to keep up with JO. Woody needs to switch Horford onto the similarly-built Haslem and play Josh Smith on JO. The few times they rolled with this matchup today they played fine. Horford is overmatched in every way by JO, while Josh can at least out-athleticize him. Haslem isn’t the athlete Josh is, but he can out-physical him. Right now this matchup is not working in the Hawks’ favor.

2. They didn’t have much choice today without Marvin, but when they are at full strength they really need to play a taller man on Wade and force him to dribble to his left. Wade is much weaker going left, and the few times they made a concerted effort to make Wade drive to his left today he wasn’t nearly as effective. Get up in his grill, don’t give him an inch to shoot, and make him drive to his left.

3. For the second straight game the Hawks were way, way, WAY too slow closing out on 3 point shooters. I don’t think it’s a huge deal if Wade dominates in single coverage and scores 50. It is, however, a huge deal when you let Miami shoot 60% from the 3 point line. Chalmers, Jones, Cook, etc. simply cannot be given space to put up shots and heat up.

That’s all on Woody to fix. As far as the players are concerned, it’s becoming pretty clear which players on the team have balls and which ones don’t. Mike Bibby, Flip Murray, and Zaza Pachulia came to play today. They may not have played great the whole game, but they gave a commendable effort. They have balls. Joe Johnson and Josh Smith did not come to play today (except for a few minutes in the 3rd quarter), and it’s impossible to win a game in any environment if your two most talented players are not producing. Josh has had problems with consistency through his career, but it’s very, very disappointing to see the team captain completely overmatched throughout the entire game.

The Hawks got murked on the boards today, and it’s mainly because of the matchup issue inside. They got murked from the 3 point line today, and they absolutely have to do a better job closing out. Offensively they haven’t been a very consistent team all year, and that’s not really going to change — they are a team that feeds off their defensive energy, and they have to play great defense in Game 4 in order to have a chance to win.

If the Hawks don’t win Game 4 they are toast in this series. I gotta say, having to rely on Woody making adjustments in order to keep the Hawks’ playoff hopes alive doesn’t give me a good feeling.

And I will say the same thing I said after Game 2. Dwyane Wade is an MVP caliber player and easily the best player in this series, but he is not the reason the Hawks are losing. He can go for 50 every night from here on out and the Hawks can still win if they clamp down on the supporting cast. It is the likes of Jermaine O’Neal, James Jones, Mario Chalmers, and Daequan Cook that are beating the Hawks right now, and it’s entirely in the Hawks’ hands to shut them down.

I agree najeh, same exact thing I said right after the game. Coach has to put guys into a position to where they can succeed. I don’t care who you are…if you’re getting doubled, sometimes tripled team all night long you’re going to find it hard to score and that’s JJ’s problem right now. And when he does get open it almost appears like he’s worried that somebody is at least on his back. Woody has to draw up some plays with the guy coming off screens to shake the double team, but coach hasn’t done it all year and I don’t expect him to do it now. JJ also has to recognize that he can’t hold the ball all day and wait for the double team to come as well…

We’ll see what “adjustments” are made.

If the Hawks don’t watch these blowouts they’ll be banned from national coverage during the playoffs. The Falcons were horrible two years ago during national broadcasts and they were kicked off last year.

I can see it now: during future hawks playoff runs announcers are prohibited from mentioning anything hawks related, fake crowd noise is generated during all hawk home games, and the hawks players themselves are blurred out so only the opposing team can be seen.

DOC-It looks to me like Woodson is trying very hard to establish his own identity as a HC. He doesn’t want to be seen as a deciple of coach LBrown, therefore he installs his own OFF system.

It’s painfully obvious his OFF system doesn’t have options that penalizes the DEF or the defender for overplaying. There are no quick hitting passes to players coming off back screens or backcuts towards the basket. Woodson won’t play Acie who could really take advantage of the double teaming of JJ and the overplaying of everyone else.

It wouldn’t hurt for Woodson to at least try and be a little imaginative and move JJ to Marvins SF spot and let West and Acie do a tag team on DWade. Rotate JJ and Evans at SF and run a 4 guard rotation of West, Acie, Bibby and Flip against their guards. Instead, Woodson has retreated into his traditional shell by slowing everything down, limiting the rotation and overplaying his key players, making no adjustments, letting the opposition dictate the tempo game get out of hand.

I’ve got some more news for all you Woodson supporters, THAT AIN’T COACHING.

Great analysis as usual Ken! If Woody used your lineup suggestion, perhaps that could ’save’ Joe by allowing him not to expend as much energy on the defensive side. Sure, Mario could be a ’self check’ on offense but that is also where ball movement becomes important. He will at least drive in the seams forcing something to happen.

I am VERY concerned with how the team has looked the past two games. I hope there is a shakeup with the team. Game 4 is very important now.

i have one answer: BASG! tried to be clever and not smart … see bradley’s article on the falcon draft to understand the difference. yes, miami fans it has been a long 5 years. yes, we have wondered for a long time why it must take 5 years to do a make over when you and philly have done it in far less. it is what it is, maybe you guys should have some compassion for us.

ray, the beasley comment was a cut and paste from first game that someone inserted. didnt see him play last night to make any observation. wasnt too impressed with him in either game in the big a. was impressed with haslem and as you know i have always been a fan of his as he is a true warrior, jon making a stand and wade. that is the critical key to their resurgence along with cook finding his range. also pleased to see jon looking more like the player he was as i have liked his game for many years. miami is tough, granted and has shown up. thus far we have only shrunken in the limelight. too bad for everyone including miami fans who deserve better competition.

This team is clearly lacking leadership as Fratello discussed during the broadcast. When a coach is the only voacl leader, that coach is destined to fail. As a former player, I’m guessing Woody understands the role of an effective locker-room leader. He doesn’t have one. Sund could fire him and I’m guessing this team would still melt when faced with adversity (much like Orlando is doing). Anyone who thinks this issue starts and ends with Woody is fooling themselves. A heartless team is about the players not the coach. Replacing the coach is the easiest thing to do and may make the best short-term impact. But until one of our top 2-3 players grows a pair AND steps up and produces in important road games, any improvement will be cosmetic at best. They certainly had me fooled. I been cheering for a team of tin men.

How Sekou could listen to their pre-game statements without chuckling and saying “yeah, right” is a real mystery to me. The quotes of these guys is about as valuable as used toilet tissue.

Hi everyone, I am the Triangle Offense. I have been watching your Hawks play basketball. It’s really a simple game. Cut, Pass, Swing ball to open man…keep it simple.

Your coach, Woody is it, does not know me but I have been watching. I can’t figure out what it is your team is doing. I here they call it Iso Joe. Seems it requires him to at a minimum to dribble 20 seconds off the clock before he attempt a shot. He should save all that dancing for after the game. I have noticed the better the opponent the more his game declines. Seems to have a high admiration for the elite players Sure you will win a few games this Iso Joe, but over all this system is doom to fell. I have had a few player in my system that have had to learn the hard way, that individual play gets you no Championships, sorry for calling you out Michael & Kobe.

I would think more teams would pay attention to my style of play, the Triangle Offense. My goodness, I have won 9 championships; 6 with Michael & 3 with Kobe. The only other person on the planet who has more rings is Robert Horry.

My point is I could offer your team a system, a consisent plan of attack. If you have noticed the system works and you can just plug in players with your one key guy (Joe). If you take a look at this years version with the Lakers, while Kobe is sitting the 2nd unit continues to prosper. They often time increase the lead while Kobe is on the bench. A recent game in the playoffs produced a 41 point quarter of which Kobe had 6.

I would love to work with your Atlanta Hawks team, would you please let who ever is in charge, to call one of my diciples for an appointment…you guys know my number…Holla, cause the basketball gods love Hawks fans too!!

PS…you should think about getting rid of the guy who subscribes to the Iso Joe offense!!

at some point the coach also begins to coach a player or two to become leaders and puts them in charge. someone that is a control freak will have a hard time giving up the reins and does it only to serve lip service to the concept. if he continues to put everything into the quietest member of the team to send a message, it doesnt get delivered. how would you feel as a player in a team game to watch its leader put up nine shots to get two points and get 5 blocked all in the first quarter?

doc, We haven’t heard from Samuel since game 2.

We all thought the Hawks gained some valuable experience from taking the C’s to 7 games last year. And although they won 10 more games during the regular season, they look like the same team.

Woody needs to try a different line-up, different matchups, something, anything. They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results. And that’s exactly what Woody and the Hawks are doing.

When the jump shots are not falling, put Acie in to penetrate and maybe get the bigs some easy shots. Put Mario in for a couple minutes each quarter (he always plays good defense, and his energy level is always high). Let the Hawks play full court defense everytime (as long as we play Mario and Acie to give guys a rest).

I agree that the Hawks need a team leader. Although JJ is team captain, he leads by example. Bibby is quiet sometimes, and Horford is still learning.

Honestly, Woody has been here 5 years, and I wonder if the team is slowly tuning him out…

WOW, it looks like my FIRE WOODY bandwagon, which I’ve been driving all yr long, is filling up. WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG FOR YOU GUYS TO COME ON BOARD? Woodson’s limitations as a HC will keep the Hawks from getting better and will cause them to continue playing inconsistently. On the road and in the playoffs, coaching becomes more critical and has a greater impact on the outcome. Therefore, we will continue to suffer the same fate because Woodson isn’t imaginative, openminded, flexible or competent enough to overcome the disavantages of playing on the road or in the playoffs.

He’s too arrogant and/or insecure to even accept input from his assistants, and he won’t even call on his mentor LBrown for help. The Pistons under LBrown used back picks and screens to get open scoring opportunities for it’s scorers. They never relied on one on one or isolation play. He seems motivated to distance himself from any label or identity that’s not his own. Therefore, the OFF he’s installed is extremely limited and is reflective of his individual limitations as a HC.

INSTEAD OF ACCEPTING THE FACT HIS SYSTEM DOESN’T WORK FOR THE PLAYERS OR THE TEAM, HE BLAMES THE PLAYERS FOR NOT MAKING HIS EXTREMELY LIMITED SYSTEM WORK FOR THEM/HIM AND STUBBORNLY CONTINUES TO TRY AND FORCE THE SQUARE PEG INTO THE ROUND HOLE. NOW THAT’S STUPID.

As long as we continue relying on MBibby as our PG, we’ll continue being inconsistent because of his DEF libilities and his limitations as a PG. At this point in his career, Bibby’s lost his speed, quickness and is unable to penetrate and finish at the basket. Therefore, he’s become nothing more than a 3pt jumpshooter, which automatically creates inconsistency.

been saying the same thing all season… this mans system is flawed, he has iso design for every position, its a scheme that promotes selfish play. therefore it yields these results. by far the easiest system to defend no ball/player movement. no such thing as making the defense work. Woodson at best is an assistant…

however, we can still win the series… but we are in need of a new head coach starting pg, and someone who can score consistently inside…

Ken the reason why it took long is because most of us realized while the guy was 10+ games over .500 absolutely nothing could be done, but I think mostly every blogger agreed that if the Hawks did not win the first round that he should be gone. Now we haven’t lost the first round yet, but one more lost and we might as well pack up our bags and go home and Woody may want to start doing the same thing.

I understand what people are saying about having a team “captain”, a “leader”, and a “superstar”, but even those three things at a certain point will not be able to succeed if their coach can’t put them in a position to succeed. I’d much rather have this same exact team with a bonafide coach than this team with as poor of a coach that we have right now. We can’t go far with the stubborn “leader” of a coach that we have now. Instead of making adjustments this guy much rather watch his “all-star” get doubled for 2 full games, and he’d rather settle for watching Wade have all kind of room on the floor to do whatever he wants. I believe this Hawks team can compete with anybody, but when the coach refuses to put you in a position to win its time for him to get out of town. I’m pretty sure Woody is a good guy with a good family, but he’s got to go after this season. Some of me want us to win this series, but anotehr part of me wouldn’t care all that much if we lost if it meant Woody is gone.

doc, I completely disagree. If leaders could be taught, then few corporations would go out of business, more than 8 franchises would have won the NBA in the past 25-30 years and we probably wouldn’t be sitting on 101k plans these days. A control freak is someone like Avery Johnson, who had Jason Kidd wait at the half court line to get the play to run. I think Woody gives these guys every opportunity to step up and be a leader. I think the “unwritten story” might say that he waited too long for someone in the locker room to step forward. Maybe the short-term push after the Charlotte game was more about him deciding that he couldn’t wait any longer. Obviously, I don’t know. But when the PF starts the half of the first road playoff game with 0 points and 0 rebounds someone other than the coach needs to light into him. When Joe’s ego gets in the way of him passing the ball, someone needs to say something. And I guarantee that the NBA’s best teams don’t have to wait for their head coach to carry those messages. Oh and like I said before, Orlando appears to have the identical problem.

I agree with all who say the question about “is Joe a superstar” has been answered loudly and definitively.

But I also want to remind the apologists that Mr. Smith has more than $45M left on his deal. Far and away the most of any player on the team. He is no longer a child who needs the protection of his fan base. He is a grown man with a grown man’s contract. Time for him to perform on the road. 5 road playoffs games and I’m pretty sure he has stunk the joint up each and every time. Apologize if you want, but if he wants to set the tone in a crucial road game, grabbing a 1st quarter rebound would be a heckuva start.

Ken, as mentioned above, the reason why people laid off Woody during the year is because the Hawks almost won 50 games, and they were the 4th seed. But all along, we were not pleased.

Although I am a big Hawks fan, I was torn last year when we played the Celtics. I was proud to see us take them to 7 games, but at the same time I was disappointed because I knew that meant Woody would get a new deal. I wonder if the same thing will happen this year. Beat the Heat, and Woody might get an extension (after all, Rick Sund said even if we dont win the first round series, all is not lost).

Woody said Bibby needs to retire a Hawk, and if we had a different coach, then I would be okay with that, because a good coach should be able to hide his player’s limitations. Woody doesnt do that. Bibby can be sucking offensively and defensively, but Woody still gives him 36-38 minutes, and Bibby still takes 15 shots. The Hawks need a PG who can play defense, and a PG who can run.

The Hawks need an offensive system, and a player who can push the tempo consistently (and a coach who allows that). Woody is stubborn and limited in his capabilities. He’s a great guy, and a good defensive assistant. However, he is not a good Head Coach.

the coach has to pass the torch. he has jj as his leader, maybe it is time to give it to josh or horford and then go for it. industries and business buiid leaders all the time aj. i really dont know where that is coming from. not all people are natural leaders but have leadership qualities when enhanced can make a difference in any organization. some are ignored because certain organizations wont allow leadership. one we are all familiar with is the story of home depot. both marcus and blank were fired and moved on to be some of the best business men since the candler woodruff combo atlanta will ever know. bet they had something either not allowed or recognized in the organization from which they came. control freaks dont let go easily. if woody isnt a control freak then there is nothing to defend. also there is a huge difference between egregious behavior or greed and leadership. unfortunately we had more of the former from the president’s and greenspan on down for the last 15 years that led us sheep to this humbling situation.

doc, organizations place people in leadership positions. And hopefully, they choose people who have the requisitie leadership skills before levating them into those positions. We’ve all heard of the stereotypical mastermind who has great ideas but the leadership skills of a crab. Joe is the default leader because of his production and status as an All-Star. He is undoutedly the team’s best player, so he gets the first shot at being the leader. But that doesn’t mean that he is a leader. Horford was emerging at one time as that vocal guy but it seemed like shortly after Sekou’s article, he took a step back into the shadows.

Woody comes from a period when teams definitely had established leaders in the locker room. He’s old school and I think he wants that. He probably hoped that Bibby would do that after the trade. I recall how he was so quick to turn the reigns of the team over to Bibby.

Again, I don’t think we’ll be the first team to suffer from under-achievement because of a lack of player leadership. If Sunds resigns everyone, brings in a new coach, then we will likely be a 50 win team that will under-achieve in the post-season. Which seems to be the fate of our fellow SE-division team. I’m sure they wish that they could have Tiger on the bench and in the locker room during this series.

I’ve had about a day to think about yesterday’s game and in the end I’m more worried about the HAWKS somehow winning tomorrow’s game than losing it! Woody isn’t the coach to take this team to the next level, and needs to go this summer. If this team finds away to win another game or worse the series??, he’s here for at least another two years. I’m confident the only adjustment Woody’s going to make is double O’Neal and or Wade sometimes! Nothing on the Offensive end!! I think tomorrow nights game could get ugly, with someone putting Wade on his back! (That’s the best leadership you’re going to see Astro Joe) Either way if O’Neal plays the way he has the HAWKS have very little chance of winning.

As one of the HEATS fans said (probably WHO DIED), this series is about tempo, but what they don’t understand is the HAWKS don’t run by design! The players make that effort on their own, that’s why they can’t run off made shots/”dictate temple”. (Only steals and misses!!)

I will say this the players are going to play more physical tomorrow night, they’re will probably be some technical fouls called. End the end though, the HAWKS don’t execute on offensive and they have no one that can guard O’Neal right now.

Guy’s your going to have to win this one on your own!

let me repeat WOODSON not the problem and hawk fan are letting the play if underacheiving players dictate who coaches team,be careful what you ask for. the only thing woody is guilty of is thinking he has player in joe that is elite which is not the case, look at series. after evry game coach usually first to talk to media, and woody say all the right thing, just maybe his coaching is not be receive by the players, b/c the players come right behind him and say the exact same thing, amybe hawks have a notice he is not the one, dribble dribble dribble shoot, turnovers, lack of boards b/c before series start all you hear is heat would get hammered on boards, taking shots outside of the realm of the offense i.e. josh smith,y’all keep saying he has no offense, but for as long as these pro’s been playing ball they need coach to remind them to move the ball. where is the blame to the players, could it be possible maybe one or two players staying with team hold them back from taking next step, like a true post player something y’all lack. mayb T.O. play for hawks now(josh smith) i think he maybe the problem becuse truth be told he’ll give jumper here and there, and alot of dunks, big block now and again so why keep him, nothing has change about him since he’s been there and i promise they always rotate knock down jumpers, grab boards, and make extra pass when its time to pick up that check

Joe – your coach has been designated the leader of this basketball team. His team has lost by an average of over 20 points in every road playoff game. Now we’re losing at home. Where is his accountability?

Josh should be blamed for his lack of production, but Woody gets the blame for the continued horrible losses on the road. Our coach continues to employ the same schemes as we get pummeled on the road.

If you watch our half court game, Woody gives the call to Bibby as he walks it up the court. Woody designs the plays & calls them. The Hawks excel when they play “helter-skelter” type basketball. Woodson rarely allows them to play this way.

I’m not placing all the blame on Woody because the players have to score & defend. But Woody gets his fair share.

What a journey!! The first six games of this season, I saw a nasty feisty team and then somewhere in between that boston game it all changed. The whole regular season went by without them ever returning to that form. And then Sunday the Hawks went right into form and destroyed a Miami team that does not surpass the Hawks at any position.

I went around game planning for Cleveland. Started talking to the guys about how I wanted to face Boston over Chicago after we shocked Cleveland.

During Wednesday I saw two things in particular. Complacency and Heat Streak.

For all of those thinking that the Heat won’t stay HOT. Just know they could stay hot for a game, the series, or the whole playoffs.

However.
The Hawks as Woody would like to put it have had their backs against the wall before and always come out on top!

Smirking.

Lets see if the Hawks win another game and go from there. And then lets see what the hawks do this offseason.

I am in full support of the departure of Woody, Bibby, Smith, and Solo.

Another thing I’ve noticed about the Hawks is that, unlike most other playoff teams who are able to “flip the switch” so to speak even when they start a game slow, the Hawks pretty much play a game the way they start it. If they come out strong they play well all game, and if they come out slow they suck the whole game. Probably ties into Woody’s inability to make adjustments, but you gotta think it has something to do with the mentality of the players on the team as well.

I agree with you jhan! If this team is going to win its going to have to start from the top with the real leader – the coach. We can talk about passing torches and who should be the leader on the floor and what not, but plain and simple Woodson’s got to make adjustments to his game plan! You can’t let a guy who is a legit superstar walk the ball up the court and go to wherever he wants on the floor with very little attention and knock down open looks. You can’t design a game plan where your leading scorer is going to be doubled all night long and not be able to contribute.

I watched the Bulls today and that’s a team who theoretically shouldn’t even be competing with the Celtics but with good coaching look at what they are doing! I’ve watched all the teams in the playoffs and there’s a major difference with those teams and ours – THEY RUN OFFENSE! All of em! I can call a few screens here and there from our team but its nothing to get guys open. We hardly ever run any cuts. There’s no reason a team that went about bragging all year long about taking the Celtics to 7 games should be struggling and getting embarrassed the way they the past two nights.

I will continue to disagree with anybody that will say its not the coach fault and that it’s the players fault especially if the coach isn’t putting the team in a position where they can succeed.

Man, I started out day Sat excited about upgrading my season Tix at Phillip…I thought I had came up…Who’s zooming Who. Then I watch the Hawks come out listless for two of the biggest game of the season…go figure. I was one of the cats that thought we would take game 3 in Miami,”Right!!!” No adjustments…No education…we assed ouuuuuut!!! Heh heh

I’ll not folding on my boys…Woody just need to make a few adjustments. The 6400 dollar question is will Woody make them. Up to this point, he has stayed the course…if he continues down this path it will lead to destruction. However if he gets the ball out of Wade hand before he get a chance to survey the floor, and go with a longer guy to alter Oneal shot…then Miami don’t get those easy open looks for threes. Al is not a good match-up for Oneal…he’s too long for Al. The Hawks can steal one in Miami if make Wade and Oneal work harder to score…right now its too easy.

You can’t ask Flip to guard Wade…he is too big and he plays to physical for Flip. You got all these young bodies on the bench to throw at Wade and Oneal. They make not stop them but you can at leased slow them down. It’s two guys that you got to make work harder to disrupt their offense. The best thing about these games is it that ASG and Sund can clearly see how poorly conceived Woody’s offensive scheme is. When your offense is predicated on one guy…when he struggle…the whole team struggles!!!!!

Surely, Woody will make some type of adjustments…we talking Erik Spoelstra. Daaaaaaaaaaam the inside…get the ball out of Wade hand. GET SOLO AND MARIO IN THE DAM GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That he forgot to tell Horford to play with confidence? That he didn’t menetion that a road crowd may be a little loud and rowdy and that they needed to survive the initial wave of emotion and maintain their cool? Is Miami really doing anything significantly different in this series than in the regular season? I don’t think so. They’re just playing with more discipline, heart and energy. (And yes, Wade’s new found 3-point shooting is a heckuva wrinkle). Should Woody be fired because Joe is shooting poorly and Smith is incapable of playing consistently on defense? And what exactly will the next coach do? Beg Smith to grab a 1st quarter board better than Woody? Fine Joe every time he forces an awful shot with teammates wide open? Yeah, I’m sure that will make a huge difference.

Chicago is doing what we did last year. They are playing loose, with nothing to lose. No pressure. We’re choking under the weight of lofty expectations.

Woody’s accountability came in the 2-year contract extension. It was a secret-double-probabtion extension that screamed “I don’t want you to be my coach but my bosses think differently”. Meanwhile, dude who shows up only for home playoff games got 5 years of love at over $55M.

Getting rid of Woody is the easiest answer. But I don’t see how that can make anyone more comfortable with the notion that we have a group of players who shrink IMMEDIATELY in crucial road games. I can’t even imagine Phil Jackson having to explain the need for his starting PF to grab a rebound or two in the first half of a game. And Pop or Sloan? They’d be arrested for assault if they had to watch one of their players whine after every ref whistle while putting up a first half 0-for. Can ya’ll imagine if a healthy Marvin Williams failed to grab a first half rebound in a playoff game? Multiple members of this blog would put a “For Sale” sign in is front yard before the game ended. (Oh, and let’s not mention that the two are the same age and Smith has more NBA game experience).

Don’t blame it Joe J. Don’t blame it on J-Smoove. Don’t blame it on Tin Men. Blame it on Woody! (Sung to the tune “Blame it on the Boogie”).

I can’t stand up for the coach. The team takes on the personality of it’s coach and this team plays just about how he looks every game. “Dull, sorry, not enthused and bloated.” I’m sick and tired of this team giving up every time they get behind.

Can anyone tell me what funky “never seen before” plays the Heat are running that require “an adjustment”? Keep in mind, when Jordan scored 63 against Boston, they Bulls lost. Or is the adjustment on the offensive end where we failed to score 80 points? Maybe an adjustment on the glass is required since we’re getting badly out-rebounded. I’m sure that the fundamentals of rebounding requires frequent “adjustments”.

When I see players forget to pass, forget to block out and forget basic defensive rotations, I wonder if the problem is the scheme or that the players panic and deviate from the scheme.

Let’s fire Woody, fine a quality coach who isn’t concerned with the ownership fiasco and go from there. I’m ready to move on to the next phase. Take me to the next phase, baby, take me. A little classic Isley Bros. for the old schoolers on here.

And another thing. Have you ever run across someone who may not be as naturally talented/skilled/intelligent as others but absolutely, positively refuses to be out-worked? (Think Mario West). What little the Hawks have achieved this season isn’t because of Joe’s skills, Smith’s athleticism or Bibby’s big game experience. It has been because they are very hard to beat when they play relentless defense and attack the rim with fury. This team (players and coach) can’t rely on natural skills/IQ/acumen. They smelled themselves after Game 1 (despite saying they didn’t) and now the are lost. Here’s hoping they remember to play as a unit because they aren’t good enough as a collection of individuals to beat a quality team.

Joe – I can’t imagine Phil Jackson “allowing” anyone on his team to think or behave that way. Have you ever seen a Phil Jackson coached team look this bad for consecutive games? Is it the players on his team or his influence as their coach?

I’m not saying any of the players should get a free pass. I’m all for trading whatever players need to go to make this a better team. Show me a trade involving JJ & Josh that makes this team better & I’ll all for it.

You can’t continue to blame the players for their lack of leadership & give Woody a pass. Maybe all these young cats are learning how to be a leader by watching their coach. I just don’t know what you see in Woody that makes you think he is beyond reproach.

Their defensive scheme in this series has been horrible & their offensive sets are non-existant. If you watch when JJ gets double teamed there is usually NOBODY for him to pass the ball to. He has to dribble through/around the double team to find the open man. Since everyone knows JJ will be doubled why can’t Woody design a set that will allow for an easy pass to an open teammate?

How many times does Josh end up with the ball 25′ from the basket? That’s not on Josh – that’s the offensive play that was designed by the coach. Why don’t we double Wade every time he touches the ball? Are the players not running the defense Woody is calling? I highly doubt that. They are running the offensive & defensive plays that Woody has designed & called for.

If our offensive sets resulted in open shots for our players & they continually missed them then get rid of those players. I don’t see that happening very often. The only time our offense gets wide open looks is on the fast break. Our coach continues to call for the slow down / half court game.

If your style of play is resulting in 20-25 point losses, why not let the kids run wild? What’s the worse thing that could happen – we lose by 30? We’re still going to lose if he doesn’t change his philosophy.

“Why is it after every loss this year and now, we hear from players and coaches “we have to play harder” or “give better effort”?”

That either means they don’t want to give away their weaknesses to the media or they are not smart enough to figure out what the problem really is. In the Hawks’ case I would go with the 2nd option.

Jhan,

All I can say is denial is such an ugly thing. Here we have quotes from Dwyane Wade, saying that he’s seen every kind of defense there is, and there hasn’t been much that the Hawks have thrown at him, that he wasn’t expecting.

Here we have Jermaine O’Neal quoted as saying that everybody is playing well together, and he gives particular credit to Spoelstra and his staff for throwing different looks and sets at the Hawks.

Yep, all right there in Sekou’s article.

Astro Joe,

Do us all a favor and tell us what this scheme is that the players are deviating from. The players panic? How many times have you heard Bibby or any of the other veterans compliment Woody on anything, besides saying “Yeah, we played good defense tonight, like Woody has been screaming/preaching at us all this time.”

How many times have you heard Woody say “I have to find a way to get Joe going, or get Joe open.” Tell me what the results have been?

Oh no, wait. I forgot. Woody did find a way. It’s just that Joe sucks, and can’t listen to Woody, is that it? After all, we do have a great offensive scheme. But I’m blind like everybody else around here is, and couldn’t possibly tell you what that is. So please enlighten me and any other lost souls.

In fact, all of the players suck. Woody is an innocent, sacrificial lamb. We should fire all the players, or at least trade them away, because they just won’t listen to this guy who is trying to lead them to the promised land.

Yes, we know different guys are failing at different things. And only an idiot would give the players a complete pass.

At some point, you have to question WHY players, both veterans and youngsters alike, are NOT listening to their coach. Well, unless you wish to remain in the “it’s all the players fault” line of thinking. So, I’d be interested in your solution for this issue. Who do you think needs trading, and who should we receive in return? Come now, with your ardent, relentless defense of the coach, you MUST have some sort of plan or idea you’ve thought through?

By the way (and I know you won’t agree, but what would be surprising about that?), Mr. Smith, whom you hate with an unbridled, undisguised passion, seems to be doing more to earn his money than most of his teammates…unless of course you conveniently don’t want to count stats. And since when did we count production based on how much a player has left on his contract? Awfully convenient. Try feeding that to a horse, because most of us don’t eat STRAW…

Jhan,

Exactly. Woody calls the plays.

And as for player panic, I seem to recall A Sekou Smith article in which Woody was quoted as saying that he comes in sometimes all in a panic, upset about whatever, and that Bibby is the one that calms him down by saying “don’t worry, we got it under control.”

There’s your fearless leader on the sidelines. I understand the need for a good extension of a coach on the floor. But who developed a guy like Chauncey Billups into that kind of player? Who helped Tony Parker become more than just a wild kid? I suppose there is NO coaching involved whatsoever…

As for trading players, I’ve always said what you said. “If trading a guy makes us better, then do it.” But I keep waiting for these wonderful trade proposals that never seem to come out of the pro-coach, anti-player mouths…

Astro Joe,

Guess what? You’re right about leadership being a natural thing. But you can either cultivate it and guide it, or you can destroy it. Acie was a natural leader in college. Now he doesn’t know what to do. Guess he lost that leader’s edge when he found out how the old school veteran program works. And dammit if he doesn’t get it together, we know it’s all his fault, because players just need to listen to the coach, he knows everything.

But, I have a way for you to not blame Woody for the lack of leadership, including Bibby not “being the man.” But you’re not going to like it, because it will paint you into a historical corner. We had a chance to draft three very natural leaders. Their names were Deron Williams, Chris Paul, and Brandon Roy. Congratulations! You don’t have to hear “it’s Woody’s fault.” You can now blame Billy Knight! Cheers!

We talking DWade…the same cat that dunked on Oneal in Indy in the playoff his first year in the league…that’s before Shaq came to Miami. You got to run two or three guys at him to get the ball out of his hand.

We have always had problems containing Oneal when he was in Indy. So yeah this is a different Miami team with Oneal playing well. Yes, Woody will have to adjust his game plan…a seven-man rotation want get it done.

And for the upteenth time, you can either side with the coach, and get him the players that will make him and the team successful (or at least the kind of guys he claims he has to have)….

…Or you can change the coach, change SOME of the players, and add the kind of talent you need to be successful. Every GM has a vision of what he wants. Now he has to match that team with the right coach.

One thing to remember: A GM is always going to spend and/or lose tons more money playing musical chairs with players than he ever is with a coach. Funny how the “ain’t never the coach’s fault” argument always folds in on itself.

You need a coach? You go get one. You evaluate each candidate, seeing if he meets the requirements you have. Will he develop young players that you pick up? Will he develop a solid gameplan on both sides of the floor, with ready-in-waiting adjustments and different looks? Does he use the type of players he has to their maximum ability? And so on. But you only pay one price.

Meanwhile….

Coach can’t rebound. So you spend money on guys who can.

Coach can’t defend. Guess what? You pay for defenders.

Coach can’t pass. You need a pg, or three.

Coach can’t shoot. Better buy yourself some shooters.

And you have to have back-ups and options for each. By the way, you get to draft new guys each year, and draftees cost less, initially. If you play really bad, you get a chance at drafting a very good player next year! You can even make trades.

You don’t get to draft a new coach each year. You don’t get to trade ‘em either.

So. Is it easier to get rid of the coach? Of course it is. Duh. Trading or finding replacements for all those players? Yeah, that’s hard. And expensive. And fans will never support coaches the way they do players, unless that coach is a proven, long-time winner. You don’t see fans running around with jerseys with the coach’s name on the back, do you? (If you do, call the police, somebody escaped the loony bin…either that or the coach’s family members showed up for the game…or the coach has a stalker). No, you don’t. Coaches don’t make the highlight reel do they? No, unless they do something physically violent, or get tossed from the game.

Yeah, it’s easier to replace the coach. But if you’re going to replace the players, you better MAKE SURE THE COACH IS WORTH IT.

Interesting concept the Triangle Defensive, what ever will work. I agree those championship team were loaded talented options 1-3, but the system works. Because those team beat other teams with talented options 1-3. My point is the Hawks as designed does not appear to have a team system. Plug in a player an the offense remains recognizable.

Woody may not be the problem, but he is most certainly not the answer: as mentioned above –

Coach can’t rebound. So you spend money on guys who can.

Coach can’t defend. Guess what? You pay for defenders.

Coach can’t pass. You need a pg, or three.

Coach can’t shoot. Better buy yourself some shooters.

Coach can’t coach. You get a new one.

I merely suggest one who knows the Triangle Offense…seems to work.

Cleveland is already done with their first round series and waiting to pound on Miami if they continue to pound the feathers off the Hawks. Please, someone tell me what scheme is required to get a starting PF to rebound in the first half. Ray, if I’m a hater then you’re an apologist for Smith. He has the biggest remaining contract on this team (after this season). Dude came up with blanks in the first half. And you want to pat him on the back for what exactly? Meaningless stats after losing by a combined 40+ points in the last 2 games? That’s supposed to make us feel better? That his vast contributions kept it from being 60+ points?

If you don’t like Joe, guess what, he magically disappears in about 84 games. Bibby? In potentially 2 more games? I need a calculator to figure out when Smith’s road woes come off the books. Smith is shooting 28% from the field in his last 5 road playoff games. 28%. 28%. 28%. $45M+ left after this season. 28%. You can call me a hater until Joan Rivers finds a surgery that leaves her looking like Kim Kardashian, but that straight SUCKS! I’m not saying Joe has been great. I’m not saying anyone has been great. But I am saying that 28% in five road games sucks. Is that even debatable? No boards in the first half Saturday and 28% in road playoff games. I mean, can that be spun differently by the Jsoh Smith Fan Club? Oh yeah, the coach’s road scheme has him standing at the 3-point line on the road but has him standing 4 feet away from the rim at home. Yeah.

Read Sekou’s current article and tell me who the players are blaming. This whole team tries to take accountability for their actions. I guess that’s admirable. Players say they need to bring energy (well, duh?) Coach says he needs to find ways to get Joe better looks. Well guess what, the other coach is trying to take away any good looks for Joe. But can that same coach do something to sap the energy from the Hawks? One wouldn’t think so (unless you believe in Harry Potter or something). ENERGY. What scheme overcomes being lethargic? What mastermind can overcome a team that doesn’t rotate on defense, crash the boards or misses free throws? How do schemes change from home vs. road? You know what I read Spoelstra told his team after Game 1, hit them in the face first. Wow, there’s a brilliant scheme change. That had to come straight from Pat Riley as no rookie coach would come up with that gem. That’s a freakin brilliant adjustment. “Hey guys, bring more energy from the opening tap than the other team”. Let’s put dude in the HOF tomorrow.

I hope our next coach is a visionary like Spoelstra. Maybe he can even tell the players to “make the extra pass”. I know, a bold coaching idea that they have surely never heard before. These poor players, it’s a miracle that they have overcome a lack of coaching and made it this far. I guess it was their collective will, energy and heart that made the difference during those first 83 games of the season.

Good post by Astro Joe (Poor McKay). Both you and Ray are right, of course.

(Woody’s lack of adjustments and planning) + (No energy, leadership, and execution from the players) + (Red hot Heat team) = Getting blown out by 30 points on the road.

Everyone needs to be better in order for this thing to turn around. However, if offseason adjustments are going to be made, it is easier (like Ray said) to just rid of the coach and make a couple player changes than it is to get rid of the whole team and keep the coach.

Also, in regards to Dr. Josh Smith’s photo, this sums up what Josh does FAR FAR too often for a player that has been in the league for this long. He whines after any and all contact and frequently doesn’t recover on the defensive end because of it.

He has to cut this out, along with the early game pouting he showcases when things aren’t going his way.

Astro Joe,

I already knew you were Poor McKay, so it doesn’t matter. And don’t ask me how I knew.

Okay, I give in. You’re right. Josh Smith sucks monkey nuts. Fire him, and do it now. Happy?

What kills me is that you never want to mention anyone with as much vehemence as you do him. I know what the players are saying. It ain’t what YOU’RE saying. I didn’t pat him on the back. I simply mentioned that out of the all the underachieving players that you want to bash, he’s doing the best. What does that say? I’ve seen more effort out of him than I have certain other players.

You imply that the scheme couldn’t possibly change from the road to home games? Explain why Joe has sucked in both? Ah…he must not be trying. At all. Whatsoever. And since the other team has built schemes to stop him, it’s totally on him to figure out how to beat the schemes himself….

We’ve stunk it up on the road all year. That hasn’t changed. Why? Nevermind, I forget. The players suck. They don’t play with any energy.

One more time: WHAT IS OUR OFFENSIVE SCHEME? WHO, OUT OF OUR SUCKY PLAYERS DO WE TRADE, AND FOR WHOM? Come on, it shouldn’t be too hard for you: Josh Smith for who?

Call you a hater? Why, when everything you say is louder than any name I could call you? If you want to call me an apologist (or any other name that suits your fancy) go ahead, if it makes you feel better. And change your “other name” to Poor Woodson. That might make you feel better, too.

“Please, someone tell me what scheme is required to get a starting PF to rebound in the first half.”

A classical example of your MO. Here I am talking about our offensive scheme, and all you can think of is Josh Smith not getting a rebound in the first half. As usual, it’s your whipping boy’s fault. If he gets 10 rebounds in the first half, then we win, huh?

Here’s the best part. While he was averaging 20 and 10 through the first 2 games, where were you? Oh, that’s right….saying “his athleticism was on display” more or less because his teammates were playing well. After all, they’re the reason why he was able to get those rebounds, right? Or the reaons he kept outrunning the defense on fast breaks. I mean, he couldn’t have possibly done it himself…

I seem to recall giving Josh Smith plenty of heat during the regular season when he didn’t perform well, including that game against the Lakers when he didn’t get a rebound in the ENTIRE GAME. I was on him so hard, other bloggers were telling me I was being too harsh. Huh. Don’t remember that one, do ya? Or any of the others, no doubt (including the streak of sorry rebounding prior to the blow-up with Woodson).

But I’m an apologist. I wonder what that makes you for Woodson? Is there a word for it, I wonder?

The question is, WHY? And it’s up to the coach to figure that out. But what happens when we face some adversity? We come apart. And if anybody is looking to the sideline, the answer they get back is “play harder.”

Also, if Josh Smith had half the jumpshot Travis Outlaw does, he would be an incredible player. Outlaw came into the league out of high school a year before Josh, and to my knowledge was never a very good jumpshooter as a rookie. Now he has a very reliable stroke. I don’t think it’s out of the question that Josh can do the same thing, but it’s something he needs to work on.

Does anyone else watch Houston and wonder why the hell Yao doesn’t get the ball on every possession? I know Rick Adelman was up there among the Coach of the Year candidates and all, but really, he can’t make it a point to make sure Yao gets fed the ball at all times? Ray, there’s another option besides replacing the coach or the players. Replace them both. That would be my choice at this point. Re-sign Bibby and package him with Smoove to the Clippers for Baron Davis and Camby. If Joe bolts on us the following summer, we still have Baron and Horford (and maybe Marvin) as our nucleus. I have a feeling that Baron and Camby are much less likely to shrink in road playoff games. Clips do it because Baron is a horrible match with Dunleavy and Camby is expendable. I’d try to convince a Fratello or Doug Collins type to take over the team. If they turn me down, then I’d gamble with Mark Jackson or Bill Laimbeer. Bottom line, either a big-time coach or a big-time personality. Someone the players can’t ignore.

DA REAL DEAL-the same situation existed when I first started calling for Woodson to be fired. I simply realized the team was winning inspite of Woodson not because of him. I saw teams with far less talent having as much, if not more, success because of better coaching, utilization of talent, better player development and decision making. I just realized if you combine those attributes with our talent, we’d be a much better team and accomplish a whole lot more.

NOW WE’RE SEEING THE TEAM SUFFER AS A RESULT OF WOODSON’S LIMITATIONS AND HIS STUBBORN DOGMATIC APPROACH TO DEALING WITH THE TEAM AND THE PLAYERS. The team would be much more effective if Acie started and Bibby came off the bench. Most one dimensional players are usually more effective coming off the bench. With Acie’s speed, quicknes and penetrating ability he’d have a field day with Miami doubling JJ and everyone else playing the passing lanes. Solo’s length and quickness would make him a better choice for playing JO’neal than Zaza. JJ would be a better option at SF than MEvans.

When you don’t have a clue what to do strategy wise, and your current system isn’t getting it done, you try to create advantages and mismatches by changing and/or rearranging personnel. SO FAR, WOODSON HAS DONE NOTHING BUT STAND ON THE SIDELINES WITH ARMS FOLDED AND ALLOW HIS TEAM TO ABSORB 2 BUTT WHIPPINGS. SHORTENING THE ROTATION, OVERPLAYING HIS STARTERS AND KEEPING 3 OF HIS BEST DEF PLAYERS(MWEST, ALAW & SJONES)FIRMLY ANCHORED TO THE BENCH IS BENEFICIAL TO MIAMI, NOT US.
