Cagle vows tax cuts despite budget problems

Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle this morning told nearly 3,000 business and political leaders that lawmakers will seek to cut taxes to spur the state’s faltering economy.

Cagle, speaking at the 2010 Eggs & Issues event sponsored by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, moments ago said lawmakers this year “have to have foundational changes.”

With the state already facing a budget that is $3 billion less than it was four years ago, and preparing to cut another $1.5 billion, Cagle said the Senate will work to insure “we do the responsible thing, create efficiencies and bring government back to the 21st century and focus very deeply on cutting taxes.”

Cagle did not, however, elaborate on his plans for tax cuts or what other cuts the state would make to make up for lost revenue from the tax cuts.

Appearing with Cagle at the event is new House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge). Ralston said the budget crisis provides an “opportunity” for the General Assembly to determine what state government should and should not be doing.

“We know we have a challenging budget situation,” Ralston said.

If taxes are cut, the only program which will be cut to make up for the loss of revenue will be education. Students don’t vote (yet), therefore, no political backlash. To meet all the unfunded mandates, local property taxes will have to be increased to pay for mandates the federal and state governments demand us to do but not provide funds to pay for. This is just another way of destroying public education in support of only private schools who do not have the mandates.

How can they say they’re going to cut taxes when they’re broke? So they can become more broke? This is just politicking, plain and simple. And simply put, that means Cagle is lying through his teeth. If they lower taxes in on area, they’ll just screw is in another. I trust these fools in Atlanta about as much as I trust the Federal Representation in Washington D.C. Come November, I’m voting whomever is in power, out of power. And I’m not planning to vote for either of the major party tickets. I want REAL FRESH CHANGE. So if you’re running, run as an independent!
