Jill Chambers needs to GO! She is not an asset to anyone but herself. Just try making an appointment with her (as a constituent, I have tried and...nothing). She does not care about the people she represents so show her the door

The problem is that if we lose Jill Chambers, the new Chairperson of the Marta committee will be from outside the perimeter and may run on the platform of defuending mass transit.

Jill Chambers may have started out well on the MARTOC committee but this last year's debacle on MARTA funding by the Georgia Legislature can be partially laid on her. The original 50/50 funding capital/operations) was an arbitrary split that was affixed by Lester Maddox and a Georgia General Assembly that didn't have a clue about running a transit operation.

Chambers promised MARTA that if they adopted fiscal policies that she wanted that she would help MARTA get the restriction revised. MARTA did its bit, but Jill reneged on her promise.

So long as MARTA has the 50/50 restriction its going to have trouble making ends meet. They have enough challenges with the anti-transit policy of the GOP and the Atlanta suburbs and exurbs along with its own bone-headedness) that it does not need one more obstacle.

Chambers is much more concerned with keeping the Georgia Legislature's control over MARTA's finances than she is with making MARTA successful. The GOP ideology that public works must pay for themselves is wrong-headed and unrealistic. You can try and explain to a republican that roads don't pay for themselves either, but they will not admit that they same logic should apply to transit.

Look around -- since the GOP took over the Georgia government 8 years ago not a single significant infrastructure investment has occurred in metro Atlanta. That's not a coincidence. The GOP cannot admit that infrastructure development requires investment --public investment.

The only project that is limping along is to turn the HOV lane on I-85 north of the Perimeter into a toll road and that idea predated the Perdue administration. The interchange at I-85 and 316 was recently completed --but that was started (and funding allocated) long before the GOP tookover.

Every other toll-road proposal and infrastructure development in metro Atlanta has foundered. The GOP won't even let counties join together and tax themselves to pay for infrastructure (the GOP wants the state to control the funds, and that means they want to siphon of metro Atlanta tax dollars to South Georgia, again).

MARTA may not fare any better with the legislature if Chambers gets the boot --but it won't be any worse. Chambers needs to go. Maybe that will help send a message to the GOP that they will lose seats in the metro area if they continue to fail at this. Metro Atlantan's who care about transit should vote for candidates based on whether they will support regional solutions to transit over the narrow interests of the legislature -- which in its current form is never going to allow transit to grow in this state.

Elena Parent is going to rightly win this one going away.

Nice to see some competent people running for office. Our city needs more fresh faces.

Even though she doesn't tell us everything we'd like to hear, Ms. Chambers has done a very creditable job heading MARTOC ( the House Marta Oversight Committee). It would be a loss far beyond her district if we lost the momentum and competence she's brought to MARTOC especially given the transportation challenges we now face in the Metro area. Her leadership has provided an even handed bi-partisan feel to that committee, frankly far more than I would have expected. The fact that she's also a republican gives her a lot of "cred" and good will when dealing with many republican house colleagues. I'm sure Ms. Parent is most competent from an educational stand point as well as some prior experience. But right now, given the importance of this committee's work, we can't afford to engage in any OJT(on the job training) on the MARTOC Committee.

Glad someone is challenging. It's time to make some inroads in the georgia legislature. Too many republicans have become comfortable in their positions under the dome. They're afraid to do anything for the citizens of Georgia and thus stand for something.
