Zell: Use Gorilla Glue on Obama’s chair

Decrying a federal government he says is out of control, former Georgia Gov. and U.S. Sen. Zell Miller said Thursday that America is “spending like we’re Paris Hilton.”

But the comparison to the blonde socialite might not be the worst offense in Miller’s litany of all that’s wrong with the country.

Speaking to more than 1,000 conservative – overwhelmingly Republican – lawmakers from around the country, Miller said, “Today, we’re spending like we’re Paris Hilton, regulating like we’re Ralph Nader, nationalizing like we’re Hugo Chavez, printing money like we’re the Weimar Republic and taxing like we’re, well, the Democratic Congress.”

Miller was the Thursday keynoter at the annual gathering of the American Legislative Exchange Council, which ostensibly is a bipartisan or nonpartisan group of legislators. In practice, however, ALEC is overwhelmingly Republican, as evidenced by the the speakers Thursday who bashed President Barack Obama and the the Democratic majority in Congress. This morning at breakfast it was economist Stephen Moore. At lunch it was WSB radio host Herman Cain, a former Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, and then Miller, who served as a Democrat but famously rejected the party near the end of his time in Washington.

Miller said Obama’s decision to try and close the Guantanamo Bay prison where suspected terrorists and enemy combatants are held, is “nuts.”

“This strange Obama sense of justice penalizes our civilians’ with their loss of freedom while rewarding the terrorists with new rights they never had before,” Miller said.

Obama, “our globe-trotting president,” Miller said, “needs to stop and take a break and quit gallivanting all around. I think (chief of staff) Rahm Emanuel ought to get some Gorilla Glue and put it in that chair in the Oval Office and say ‘Sit here awhile.’”

Zell (and the rest of you knuckleheads who think he said something good), need to run off to another country where Democracy doesn’t rule. This isn’t the United States of Republicans. The people elected Obama and this is what they wanted. Overwhelmingly. Don’t like it? Leave.

Zell Miller use to be someone that the Black community could embrass when he was Governor of Georgia. I was a kid then, but he seemed like a cool guy. Now, I am not sure what to think of this ANGRY MAN. The qoute “Gorilla Glue” made me turn in my seat. So I decide to look up Gorilla Glue and I was just floored when I saw the website and thought about his comments. Of course he (Zell) is going to say it was something else when we all know it was an attack on President Obama as a black man. This is just sad…Zell Miller is on the wrong side of politics and history. C’mon Zell, did you have to make that statement, knowing its going to get you in trouble. If you were in office, your days in office would be numbered. WOW!!! I am still shocked, but I guess that is nothing new when a black man makes strides, there are alway those that would attempt to overshadow those accomplishment with inflammatory comments like Zell made, before a roaring ALL REPUBLICAN CROWD!!! I do believe Obama thinks what he is doing is right, much like I think Bush thought the same thing. However, what both didn’t/don’t realize is the ramifications of their actions. Obama implemented a cobra stimlus program that gave laid off workers money to purchase their company’s COBRA coverage after terminiation… so what did most companies do? They rewrote their severence plans to compensate for the subsidy. Thus laid of workers got less from their companies thanks to Obama.

I’d say cue the liberal race-card throwing hate rhetoric but that Add Seymour idiot already did. Nice going you ignorant tool. When brain-dead lefties are hit with the truth they naturally turn to spewing their wretched brand of hate and intolerance. Simply put, you’ll never get a liberal to engage in an open and thoughtful debate. They’re not smart enough to do it. It’s why no one gives a crap about their stupid radio shows. The only thing you’ll learn from a liberal is how to hate people you disagree with and pander to those you fear. If they disagree with you, they simply hate you. If you don’t think like them, look like them, talk like them, read their books, vote like them, believe in what they believe in, they hate you. And if you’re a white, rich, Christian guy, forget it. These people live to hate. They are one of the most intolerant groups of people on the planet and that is a fact. Thank God (oh crap, I just capitalized God), the majority of people aren’t liberals.

Since the glue is white and I am white, I am convinced that they are implying that all white’s are cows? HOW RACIST! People, get real. Look up gorilla glue. Like Smile explained, it is an extremely adhesive, multifunctional glue. One that you could use to glue SOMEONE to a chair with, if you did not want that certain individual to move from that chair for an extended period of time. If you have ever taken a trip to your local Home Depot, then you more than likely would have seen or used this glue. Really, stop trying to apply metaphors to any comment that references Obama in a negative manner.

For you Independent Thinker, here is the description Gorilla Glue uses for its product: “Gorilla products work when others fail, the first time, every time, helping people around the world build, create and repair.” I agree, absolutely appalling. Please note my sarcasm. If anything, Gorilla Glue is more of a symbol for Republicans. It is a symbol for those that DO things in and with their life. I can’t nor “you people” can take the credit for everything going wrong in the world-so my apologies Scott. I abide by being a lawfuls citizen just as a lot of people (the you people included do). You don’t like Obama I understand-your choice, but to degrade a human being and then go for categorizing a race of people because of their skin color is unwarranted and unnecessary. If President Obama (I choose to respect him, just as I choose to respect you) if he is not your choice to straighten out this mess our country is in, make sure you do what you can during the next election to ensure he isn’t re-elected. I just don’t like it when people get on here and see it as a way of venting their hatred towards another race. Maybe our country is going to hell in a handbasket because we all as humans white, black, red, brown are to busy pointing the finger at each other, calling each other names and refusing to try and get along. Maybe if we stop focusing on the “White man keeping us down” or the black thugs, naggers, monkeys, apes, and anything else we say to hurt one another, maybe just maybe the US of A will get its act together…Now whew with that said, The race card shouldn’t be played here – I thought it was amusing myself because he feels that President Obama can’t keep still so using gorilla glue (which is one of the most strongest adhesives) will keep him in his chair then so be it.

If you have actually ever purchased and used Gorilla Glue, you would not be offended in any manner by the reference by Zell. That stuff works on anything and is unbelievably adhesive. Thus, the reference to “put it in the seat and sit awhile”; once it dries, you’re stuck. Obama needs to stay put and really hunker down on his executive duties. His lack of executive branch experience (and general life experience) is really causing this country harm right now as it relates to his ability to lead others and/or make good decisions regarding appointments to critical government leadership roles. The policies emanating from the executive branch right now are clearly idealistic in nature with no basis in reality or quantifiable results. While he has inherited some problems from the previous administration and the economy, let’s face it, he’s not making policy decisions solely to address those matters. His goal is clearly BIG GOVERNMENT and reducing our country’s influence around the globe.

It is funny how racists think they are so smart with their comments. These are the same losers who still believe that high school is the pinnacle of their existence. Let’s hope they push their kids towards a college education they never received with hopes that the kids can see what pathetic losers their parents are. There is no place for racism in this discussion. I guess these white miscreants (and I am white) are terribly irritated that an African-American has more power than they will ever have. I guess they can take solace in the fact that their hate-filled anger will undoubtedly lead to too much stress and ultimately premature heart disease, taking them out of this world without barely leaving a footprint.

Sean you are the epitome of idiot. (sorry for using the big words) The Republicans freed the slaves. Lincoln was a Republican. Blacks have been lead astray by everyone in the history of this nation. As a people, you can’t unite to make your lives better. Every other minority that has come to this country in large groups have been shunned, and regulated to the ghettos. They have then united, organized and educated themselves to get out. Blacks en mass either will not or can not get out. Stop blaming the crackers and grow up.

Nice work Zell
- you coulda said just “Glue” – because it keeps something in place…
- you coulda said “Super Glue” to emphasize that you wanted a particularly strong adhesive, to something in place for a long time…

But you had to say “Gorilla Glue” – to turn it into a blatantly racist statement.

Kudos, and thanks for reinforcing anti-Southern stereotypes. Because as a white, southern male, we don’t get made fun of enough. It’s too bad nobody makes “Cracker Tape” – because I’d love to apply some to Zell’s mouth.

Ok, so as others have said, “Gorilla Glue” is a brand of glue has become a household name for a very strong glue. I will give Zell the benefit of the doubt that what he said was absolutely not intended to be racist. I know that as soon as people see “gorilla” and “obama” in the same sentence an alarm instantly goes off in their head which I can absolutely understood, but you have to look at the context before jumping to conclusions. Again, as others have said, Zell’s been around long enough to certainly know not intend to come off as being racist and this should be taken as a temporary lapse of judgement to use the phrase “Gorilla Glue” instead of some other phrase like “airplane glue” or something.

Anyway.. despite that: yeah, Zell’s crazy.

Scott, fyi, Abe Lincoln did not free all the slaves, especially those of his in-laws in Kentucky. He just freed them for political expediency in the states that recognized Jeff Davis as their president. Also, for the record, Honest Abe allowed slaves he “freed” in Virginia to be re-enslaved in that part of Virginia that joined the Union as West Virginia(now known as West By God Virginia). The president was no saint, but you believe the tid-bits of history you want to believe, especially when it allows for a simplistic black-white view preferred by most humans. Most everybody else does, especially if it says so on the internet. One more thing: the slaves in Delaware, West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, and Maryland weren’t granted freedom by their own slave nation till well after President Lincoln had departed this earth.

darrellharrison.com I understand what you are saying and im not going to disagree with you on that but if the country doesn’t take a turn or even take a big hit like many expected to happend, will it be because of the people of American or will it be because of the one man that stands atop of the country. If you are going to blame a man for the bad, you may as well give him the credit for the good also. I’ve never said that I agree with every decision Obama has made, I also understand that he is the president and what ever decision he makes to better the country I have to hope and pray that it works. No man in the world is going to be perfect and no man or woman will always make the right decision. I’m an opened minded person and if Obama makes a decision that I don’t like im not going to bash him, I’m going to let it be known that I don’t agree with the decision. There is just too many people in America today who isn’t open minded will bash every decision he makes reguardless if its the best decision because they want to see him fail. If he fails the country fails and any real american who wishes for this country to fails just because of one man they don’t like because of their own personal reason, being that they are racists, hateful, or what ever it may be is just a sad american. I am going to give all of you the benefit of the doubt and just assume that you have never experienced overt or covert racism. I know what Gorilla glue is and and I know what it does. I also know that racists in the past (and present based on the comments above) have referred to black people as apes, monkeys and yes gorillas. So did Zell exhibit overt racism by stating the President should be attached to his seat with Gorilla glue…maybe…at the very least he demonstrated a total lack of awareness and sensitivity to the controversy this remark would create.

Why is the first thing people say about taxes is welfare? I bet AB doesn’t think there aren’t any republicans on welfare right? And taxes have been too high since Reagan! And wasn’t forgein affairs one of the reasons you republicans tried to persuade everyone else as a reason he shouldn’t be president and now that he’s actually conducting forgein affairs you say he’s globtrotting? This is what’s wrong with the government THEY don’t know what THEY want. If he didn’t go out and conduct forgein affairs you’d be saying see we told you so! If he didn’t sign the bail out you’d say see, he’s unpatriotic and doesn’t care about you! And if he didn’t fix the health care for people who don’t have it you’d be saying see, he doesn’t care if you die! You bandwagon riders are no better than any of the crazy politician’s and Zell sounds like he’s been hanging with Rush back stage having a “pharm party”. I walk the line because I think both parties have their own agenda. Also I’m sick of being called unpatriotic because I don’t agree with you. I thought I lived in america where I was free to have my own opinion and free to exspress it verbally with out my patriotism being called into question. And to all the folks saying quit being so sensitive…would you be ok with being a backwoods, toothless, inbreed hillbilly? I mean that’s what GA is made up of right? yeah I didn’t think so. Now who’s sensitive? Quit blaming this president whom by the way has been in office 6 1/2 MONTHS!!! for trying to clean up the mess left by the past. @teheran: I appreciate your reply, but for America to be “better” (however you define the term), it starts with YOU, not with the President. And that’s been my whole problem with people who are so enamored with Obama. For the most part, his supporters look to HIM to make their lives better, when they should look to THEMSELVES first.

Obama preaches that the government as the source of the solutions to the problems facing us today. I’ve yet to hear him talk about the individualism and work-ethic that made this country what it is today. With him, everything is dire, bleak and “woe-is-me” unless the government comes to our rescue. Sorry, but I trust myself more than I trust the government.

Most politicians on both sides care about 1 thing, being re-elected. We need term limits for these clowns, 1 or 2 terms and then then back to the real world with the rest of us.
How about having the voters approve their raises – right now they have voted themselves automatic raises – How nice.
Why do THEY not rely on social security for THEIR retirment. Give up their government pension that they are eligible for after one term. If this were the case, they may be interested in fixing social security.

OK Jax, that’s a starting point (re: Bush). On social issues (mainly those of personal choice), I’m about as liberal as they come. In terms of government programs/economic policy, I’m a pragmatist. I believe that a civilized society should provide a true, needs-based safety net for the poor, and access to decent health care for all its citizens. Equal access to education is also appropriate. At the same time, spending must be cost effective.

For example, let’s look at health-care. Would a socialized health system truly cost more than our current system? I don’t know, but I do know that one third of my property tax bill goes to Grady Hospital. Because the poor lack health insurance, they show in the Grady ER for non-emergency care. I’m going to conjecture that what we would have is simply a shift in taxation. More to the Feds for insurance, but property taxes drop when Grady becomes a real EMERGENCY room.

I readily admit that I don’t have the ability to prove the above (who does?), but let’s just look at all the angles. Our issues are much too complex to be framed purely as left v. right, and the invective is completely counterproductive.

I always love how the racism word is thrown around. I would bet that half of the people who use the term could not define it with out looking it up in the dictionary. Not once in the story was it quoted that Zell had a problem with the President being black. Nor did he infer that he felt he was superior (BTW thats what racism is defined as) over blacks. If you read the quote he said the chief of staff should use the glue to keep the President in his chair for a while. In other words instead of flying around making speeches about his policies he should sit behind the desk and actually work on some of them. To me all the quoted points that Zell made are spot on. The question that we will have to see down the road is if any of his claims do come true and what effect they will have on the country.

As I read the comments, I am floored that people care more for labels than for the country.
Point 1: With a national debt reaching a 1:1 ratio with both the GDP AND the per capita income of the nation; WE ARE BANKRUPT!! WE NEED SERIOUS CUTBACKS IN SPENDING, NOT MORE!!! As an idea for how to do it: READ THE CONSTITUTION!!
Point 2: Since there are not enough providers, mandating universal health care EQUALS NOT ENOUGH TO GO AROUND Equals RATIONED CARE.
Point 3: If you want to end the recession and get things going, you have to get the idea out of your head that all people making over $350 K are evil. They could be small business owners. So if you CUT taxes, instead of RAISING THEM sticking these business owners with such a high surcharge of $47.5K; maybe they will be able to hire more people, DUH!!
Point 4: If we do end up with universal health care, what about universal legal assistance, and universal CPAs? Why should only doctors get screwed into taking lower and lower costs and possibly having to FIRE or NOT HIRE workers?

Bottom line: WE DID NOT SETTLE THIS COUNTRY WITH WASHINGTON HOLDING OUR HANDS!! It is time to remember that freedom is not only not free, but it is hard and requires great responsibility not to lose what people like me (21 year AF veteran), and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice safeguarded. Please leave this country if you do not like what is going on!!

Good Grief!! You leftists need to take the chip off of your shoulder; gorilla glue is a real “super adhesive” and there is nothing racist about this comment. For goodness sake, a country with 12% blacks elected a black president- give the “racist” whine a rest- you are making it ineffective when it is appropriate to use. (See “the boy who cried wolf”- and no, use of the term “boy” was not a racist swipe at the president.)

As for this president, his economic policies are going to destroy this economy- it is staggering in a down cycle right now but not dead- if they do not stop this stupid spending. The so-called stimulus package is not being used in a way to create real stimulus- which translates to long-term jobs, not useless pork in congressional districts who voted for Obama.

We may need healthcare reform but we cannot afford the current proposal, which is a VERY thinly veiled plan to nationalize the healthcare industry, not an attempt to provide necessary healthcare to those who can’t afford it. These idiots could simply legislate insurance mobility and create tax credits for insurance premiums and the current system could provide coverage without the money passing through these power-grabbing socialists’ hands before it provides medical and drug benefits.

Finally, the debate on global-warming, which is STILL subject to debate as to its actual existence despite the shrill cries to the contrary, MUST WAIT intil our economy recovers. If it is a real problem, which many legitimate scientists dispute, it is a long-term problem and can wait until our economy can recover from the current recession. We cannot afford it NOW.

I am a CPA and I can assure you that the spending track the the three-headed Democrat monster (White House, Senate and House of Representatives) have placed us on will create MASSIVE inflation- even in excess of the Carter inflation. The laws of economics make it inevitable- there IS a cause and effect relationship. Level heads must prevail, and the blue dog democrats are the only people who can save this country’s economy until the 2010 congressional elections can perhaps slow it down. That’s why every proposal is an “emergency” action- they want to shift us to a socialized economy before the voters can recognize our path and stop it.

“As for us revving up interest artificially … this post has gotten more than 13,000 page views, which already ranks fourth most ever for this blog. It seems to me the interest is there because of the content. ”

Uh, the interest is there because of your highlighting of an innocent comment to make it appear racist.

“I have no idea if Zell was trying to be provocative or was making racist comments”

So to be clear, you think that his mentioning of one of the most popular industrial glues means that he may be a racist? Your response only confirms my previous comments.

Maybe you should actually talk to the guy before telling all of us that he might be a racist. Zell Miller has served Georgia well as an elected official and he deserves some benefit of the doubt, even if the AJC staff doesn’t share his political views. Of course, baseless accusations of racism are part and parcel of the tactics of the “tolerant” and “intellectual” American left.

The people posting here cannot be this ignorant.
“Gorilla Glue” is a brand of glue that is super adhesive. But it is a brand name; like Kleenex. He could have said “Elmer’s.” Clam down. We blacks are capable of knowing when to be offended. We can handle off the cuff comments that uses references such as gorilla, especially when we know the cultural reference intended. Give us some credit.

You are trying to make him appear as a racist by highlighting the gorilla glue phrase. As the comments on this blog indicate, many folks have fallen for the bait and just as many are laughing at your sad and transparent efforts.

You also are trying to make him look like a racist by saying things like “I have no idea if Zell was trying to be provocative or was making racist comments” (quoting you directly).

“I never said I thought or didn’t think it was a racist comment”

No, you just laid it out there that you think that he MIGHT have been making a racist comment.

Since your motives are so innocent, what is it about the phrase “Gorilla Glue” that is so important that it gets the headline on the front page and the headline of your story?

Mike, last response, and then I have to put my kids to bed. Thanks for the thread, though.
Look, he said it, we reported it. What should the headline have said? “Zell Miller addresses ALEC”? Who would read that? The point of the headline is to identify and force attention to the most interesting or controversial or provocative part of the story. That’s what it did. We didn’t say “Miller makes racist Gorilla Glue comments.” That wouldn’t be fair. We reported exactly what he said.
And I wasn’t trying to make him look like a racist when I responded to you before. .I was trying to offer plausible reasons for him saying it. Either he knew it was racist and said it, or he simply wanted to stoke some controversy or it was completely innocent and has been taken for something it wasn’t meant to be.

If the President did not spend an extra cent trying to stimulate the economy, the deficit would have increased 1 trillion just to fulfill all of Bush’s promises. Where were the deficit hawks during the Bush years. Bush took over an economy that was on target to pay off the deficit and immediately gave the largest tax cut ever to the wealthiest of Americans. Middle income wages did not rise during this time and they are certainly not now with mess he left us in.
Zell would be more credible if he had complained about the deficits earlier. He should use the gorilla glue and stay home. I am so tired of hypocrites.

Incredulous-

Being a CPA does not make me an economist, but I was required to take 4 economics classes at UGA in order to graduate. The impact of printing money and borrowing at this unprecedented rate on inflation is an ELEMENTARY economic fundamental, so it doesn’t require an “expert” to understand its impact. That is what makes this idiotic spending so “incredulous” to me, because I don’t think these people are unaware of the impact that it will have. That is part of my basis for believing that this whole “stimulous/cap and tax/health care” agenda is about transforming our economic system, not improving the economy, the environment, or health care. They are trying to do everything immediately, as though their hair was on fire, and I can only assume that the reason is that they want it in place before the inevitable inflation hits.

(BTW, I have a CPA license but haven’t practiced in 20 years- everytime I went to a meeting or for CPE I was frightened by the possibility that the people in the room might be my peers).

And your last paragraph is truly “incredulous”- I would suggest that it is much more SELFISH (and foolish) to MORTGAGE MY CHILDRENS FUTURE (I have 5, by the way) in order to “fix” a problem which has not yet been proven other than by junk science and by scientific groups who determine their findings before they do their research (see the recent EPA snuffing of evidence which doesn’t support their predetermined conclusion.) I want my children to be able to pursue financial success without confiscatory taxation which punishes innovation and hard work.

Your comments are incredibly shallow in supporting thought.

If he hadn’t had said the “Gorilla Glue” comment, the story probably would not have been reported at all. It certainly would not have gotten the headline on the home page. The truth is that the “Gorilla Glue” comment is the only “newsworthy” aspect of the story.

I’m not going to deny that you folks crafted a sensationalist headline that got eyeballs. Hearst’s brand of yellow journalism did that too.

Your continuing claims that the comment might be racist don’t do much to help your case. Forget the glue and racism and bigotry, and whether you like Zell or Obama – the truth is that Cap and Trade will “necessarily cause energy prices to skyrocket”, and I’m quoting Barack Obama. So your electric bill, heating bill, and the price of gas will increase. Then your taxes will go up to pay for the health care legislation. So more businesses and companies will fail, more jobs will be lost. How long before there’s not enough of us working to pay for all the unemployed, sick, and poor? Very soon I’m afraid. So, I would like to hear an intelligent rebuttal from a Democrat/liberal/Obama fan.

1st, I am proud to be born and raised in Wisconsin, one of the greatest states in the nation with an outstanding educational system. With that being said, I am very disappointed with the poor word choice that Zell Miller used to describe President Obama. As an African American male,I know the “Key” words that people use to descibe us, “our globe-trotting president” makes reference to blacks and basketball or better yet, “Gorilla Glue”, comparing blacks to apes, something that racist whites have been doing for years. We need to look at the bigger problem people, President G.W. Bush brought this country to it’s knees with his administration’s vast spending on two wars, and tax cuts for the wealthy. His administration also was in the pocket of BIG OIL and that also helped in the collapse of the United States economy. Just think about last summer, when gas was over $4.00 a gallon, and their were mass shortages. Look who made a profit, G.W.Bushes’ buddies while everyone else suffered. Think about all of the truckers who lost their jobs because of high fuel costs. Oh, what about the mortgage problems, all on G.W.Bushes’ watch. His administration let these banks lend to people who could not afford to buy homes, while these banks lined their pockets with bonus money for making a quota. And some of you have the nerve to critique President Obama because he is trying to right the wrongs of 8 years of President Bush. Wow, I can remember when President William Jefferson Clinton was elected president and we had a surplus of money. But, Bush decided to give it back to the people, then 9-11 happened, and that was they beginning of the decline of the American economy. What really gets me is this??? How can one be a republican whom makes less than $150,000 dollars a year. How can one be a republican if you don’t value education- Public schools, or higher learning. On the dollar bill, it states, “In God, We Trust”, So why are we filled with so much hate against our fellow American. I thought G.W. Bush said that he was a compassionate conservative? I guess he misled the American people on that just like he misled the American people about the war. Well, Georgia, I see why this is a “Red” state. It might have something to do with the “Great” education we are providing our children in the state of Georgia. Are we not ranked in the bottom of the enitre nation with regards to education? Maybe one day, this state will look forward, instead of walking backwards. As for Mr. Zell Miller, you are the only one that has to live with himself. Zell, grow-up!

Zell: Use Gorilla Glue on Obama’s chair
2:39 pm July 16, 2009, by Aaron Gould Sheinin

Zell is not saying anything that Colin Powell has not said recently. You can’t help solve this nation’s unemployment and economic problems by jetting around the world. There are many areas of grave concern to all of us….chiefly, we have got to solve how to get this country working again. The General put it best when he said there are literally too many irons in the fire right now for the present administration. FIRST THINGS FIRST AND THAT MEANS AMERICANS FIRST!

None of my employees were around when I took out a loan to start my business that would have put me in a hole for the rest of my life had my business failed. None of them worked for me when I was a newlywed and made $8,600 my first year in business.

When you get ready to put it all on the line and create a business come talk to me. Tell the banker how your business is going to succeed because of hard working employees that you don’t even have yet! See how far that gets you.

I used to respect Zell Miller, years ago when the man was intelligent and had not lost his mind. Now, he is nothing but an angry, racist person. Very, very sad. But many people living in Georgia and the rest of the country feel exactly the way Zell does in the year, 2009. That is even more sad. He speaks of the President of the United States, not only without respect, but with racist undertones, which shows what we all knew about Zell in the first place. He is an old, angry, racist, white man. He embarrasses me as an old, white man who thought my country was better than this now after years of racism and hate directed toward one race of people. Zell, it is time for you to shut up and retire your backward thinking to the pastures of North Georgia where the Klu Klux Klan once openly roamed. Now, it seems, their views are represented and presented by old, Georgia politicians.

Dawg95. I too own a small business. It’s funny how many people think we have it made and that we (business owners) are always rich. I have to worry every day about fuel costs, insurance costs and what if anything my employee might do to cost me more money. I also have to file a ton of paperwork each and every month just to keep the Federal and State governments off my back. I would like to expand mu business, but at this point I don’t know if it’s a wise choice to do so. I also think this is what is holding back the economy in general is that a lot of business owners don’t know what to expect over the next few months. Will there be inflation, will the economy get better or worse, will I have to pay a for my employees health care, what will cap and trade do to my business? A lot for a small business owner to debate. I will tell you this much if I do have to pay my employees health care I will do one of two things. 1 fire everybody and just do it myself. 2. Reduce employee salaries to adjust for the cost of the insurance. Yes being in business for oneself is just peachy these days.

One last thing. It sure is sad to read some of the comments on here. It seems that good old fashion debate has died in the United States. Has anybody considered that Zell made the statements he made to stir up debate amongst us, which seems to sadly lacking in both political parties these days.

One thing seems to be forgotten here about Obama’s tavels overseas. During the past 8 years, one man occuping the White House, almost totally destroyed any positive relations we had with Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. I believe it will take these trips by Obama and many more to try to restore the positive, trusting relationships we had with the world before GW took over the White House. The fact is, that work is already off the a great start. And postive relationships with our world will certainly go a long way to helping to rebuild our economy and the economy of the word. It is called leadership, which has been sorely missing in the White House for over eight, long years. Nothing Obama does in the next eight years can be anything close as to being as horrible as what GW did in the previous eight years. In fact, it might take 20 years to restore what he destroyed internationally and domestically. The majority of the people in the US were highly relieved when GW left office, and we still are despite what Zell “the racist” Miller and his believers think.

@ kool$kat “Cap and Trade will “necessarily cause energy prices to skyrocket”, and I’m quoting Barack Obama.”

I’ll take a shot, without trying to be partisan. Where did you read the quote? Even if he thought prices would “skyrocket”, I’d be surprised if he used that term. But I’ll check it out if you’ll tell me where to look.

There is a lot of science on global warming, and the majority seems to back human causation. Can either side predict the future with complete accuracy? Of course not. But given that climate change is a very real possibility, would it not be wise to err on the side of caution? I am personally willing to alter my lifestyle to deal with higher energy costs. We’ve got one chance, in my opinion. If it’s real, and we ignore it, this planet will be a wretched place to inhabit. I wish better for my son, and his offspring.

Regarding the tax consequences of national health insurance, I made an earlier post regarding health care costs in Atlanta. To distill it, roughly one third of our property taxes go to fund Grady Hospital (a public facility). Because of lack of insurance, Grady’s emergency room is used by the poor as a primary care facility. While our income taxes may increase to cover national health care, our property taxes should decrease as we would no longer be providing health care in such an inefficient way.

I think I covered most of your thoughts, and would like to get your response.

It’s time to admit – the country made a mistake in electing Saint Obama. He doesn’t have a clue about economics. Confiscating more of our hard earned dollars through more and more taxes is exactly opposite what is needed to pull us out of the recession. Oops, my apologies to Brad. I should have waited another few minutes. I will have to find that quote in print, but I heard Obama say it in a speech on the radio.

Global warming is a smokescreen. Its a sham. Latest studies I read say in the past 11 years the global temp has declined! I’ll have to dig for those, too, because the mostly liberal media ignores such reports. The Obama administration embraces global warming because it allows them to push thru legislation and controls while appearing to care about the environment. But if “global” temps are his concern, why is he not demanding that other nations join our fight against greenhouse gasses? For that matter, are all the scientists in other nations ignorant? Why haven’t they convinced their leaders of the impending doom of ice caps melting, etc?

I’m a small business owner, and have been for almost 20 years. I think there has been a lot of misperception about Obama’s tax proposal. During the election, $250,000 got thrown around by a lot of folks (Joe the Plumber, for one) as the break-point for increased taxes. However, many thought that this was GROSS income, when in fact it was NET. Yeah, a lot of us gross $250,000 and over, but few net anywhere near that figure.

The proposal on the table presently is to increase taxes for those with taxable incomes greater than $350,000. So, this is after all business deductions, personal itemized deductions, and exemptions.

While this is a wild-ass-guess, I’d bet that less than 5% of small business owners have NET TAXABLE INCOME greater than $350,000

Brad if you think your property taxes are ever going to go down, you have another think coming! As for global warming, I’m not convinced humans are causing it. Look at El Nino (which is what is happening now and causing cooler weather), La Nina, volcanos, sun flares, etc. We are going to shoot ourselves in the foot trying to prevent something that MAY happen 100 years from now. Guess what? NONE of us will be around to prove we are right or wrong. I like the idea of voluntarily doing thigs to conserve energy, recycle, etc. What I don’t like are goverment mandates that will raise the price of energy, therefore raising the price of producing goods and services on everything we purchase. The cumulative effect cause the recession to drag on.

It says we can NO longer be honest with each other on a human to human level and there is really NO respect in that kind of relationship, just fear (and lately, a fear of being called a racist for the silliest reasons, come on people). Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals tactics of Target and Freeze, when you don’t like the fact that others don’t think with your life experience and your brain! Actually, a very selfish way to live. No one is allowed to be real, to let down their guard or even to have a sense of humor, that is if you are a Conservative person with a belief in something higher than BIG Government programs! There are too many rules for being real. It used to be called being HONEST. We make no gains with political correctness. Look what’s happening right before our eyes, at least for the ones who dare to look! I’m ashamed of half of America for allowing this farce to happen and I place the blame on the shoulders of liberals, actually not liberals, as liberal suggests openness. I suppose I will just have to speak truth and say LEFTIST. Zell speaks the TRUTH, something you liberals have completely lost touch with, especially since Obama slithered his way in by way of the Democratic Congress, not being vetted, and many people looking for something to worship or perhaps something to believe in.

By the way, it IS the best glue of all and that’s why he chose that particular brand. Liberals, stop being so paranoid. Everything is not about race or you. Stop imitating Obama and being so self important! What we, information processing, not regurgitating people are so concerned about is the destruction of a country! America, in case you’re not sure which one I’m speaking of, since you know not loyalty to this one in particular. By the way, Zell, please have someone take his pens away! I know several people are disappointed that Obama’s magic wand is not able to undo 8+ years of damage in six months. Some of you believe that makes him an abject failure. It took Franklin Roosevelt years to pull us out of a bad economic situation. These things won’t change overnight.

There are actually some errors in Miller’s statement. The Supreme Court awarded the Gitmo detainees the right to habeas corpus within the past couple of years. We have probably done at least some of these detainees a great disservice by holding them for all these years. We’re not sure if they’re all guilty of anything other than being rounded up. If they are guilty, if we allow them a trial we can find out once and for all.

Holding them forever in a jail cell is no way to build our status in the world. Humanity is. Some of these Middle Eastern countries may seem small, inconsequential and backwards because their beliefs are different than ours. To them, we’re just big bullies. Remembering the parable about the mouse and the elephant, someday we might need these countries. And I’d prefer friendly relations.

Back to Zell’s statement:

On the flip side, it was the Bush administration that passed the USA Patriot Act years ago. That meant that the government could do a whole lot more stuff that invaded your privacy without a search warrant. If I remember correctly, seeing what library books you checked out was in there.

Brad, his tax proposal is the least of my worries. The foremost (among others) is his health care proposal. If you are a business owner, then read up on that and let me know what you think. Another worry is the massive debt he is putting us into. My main concern about that is how much that weakens the dollar and thus slows any progress of pulling out of a recession. If you own a business, you know, that if customers don’t have money to spend, then your business is going to go backwards. The trickle down effect of that will end up falling on the employees. I love my employees, and I’ve never had to do layoffs, and it would break my heart to do so. I’m financialy stable. Some of my employees probably aren’t. I can afford lean times. It’s them that can’t.

I find it strange that Zell Miller a former Governor of a southern state who believed in the beliefs of the Democratic Party when it suited him to say such bigoted, disgusting and racist remarks regarding our President. He could have found better words to get his point across. Make now mistake about it, he meant to use the word “gorilla”. As my mother would say, intelligent people don’t talk that way and to find someone who say the have a level of intelligence says words that can cause a riot, I find him to be irrevelant to political discussion. Zell has lost all of his fluid intelligence. For those who may not know what that means: fluid intelligence is the intelligence that allows an individual to be a flexible and adapative thinker and it declines with age…well Zell has proved it…he has not only lost his intelligence but he has lost it all. Sad to say that, some people are still mad that the United States finally after 8 years, we have an intelligent and educated President who can contribute to conversation instead of taking away from it like that of Zell Miller and the rest of the “I cheated on my wife…I’m a christian conservative Republican.” Now that’s where the gorilla glue should come in….to glue the pants of the those Republlican governors and senators from going places they don’t belong.

Kool$cat, thanks for the response. I think it’s safe to say that we can both find evidence supporting either opinion, and I would like to take a look at the studies you’ve mentioned. I’ll do some Googling.

One of our biggest problems in dealing with other nations is our initial rejection of the Kyoto Protocol. Our perceived selfishness then has made it more difficult to lead now, in any direction, particularly in a down world economy.

As far as scientists persuading politicians in other countries, well, there is no type of human as short-sighted and self-interested as a politico. It is extremely difficult to remain in power when you are asking your people to make sacrifices, so most just punt. I think Obama shows a great deal of character in addressing what he perceives as real problems, and asking us to make sacrifices. I’m sure I’ll get raked over the coals for that statement, but I don’t think he has ulterior motives. Can I say that with absolute certainty? Of course not…he is a politician.

Oh, I also realized he was a black man and would potentially be the first black man elected to the office. No matter what these country bumpkins in GA say, Obama is in for another term.

Your points are well taken. Insurance is off my radar, as I have no employees. Well, not totally off the radar, and I have to buy it for myself and my family. And yes, my business has been impacted. Collecting bills has never been tougher, and I’ve had to write some down for folks who simply don’t have the ability to pay. This has been the worst month of cash in-flow in the history of my business. Fortunately, I didn’t load up on easy debt, so I’ll survive.

We have some incredibly tough choices to make, as a nation, over the coming months. Not everyone is going to win. My hope is that we can engage in constructive conversation, put politics aside, and come up with solutions that have the least negative impact.

Zell is a racist? Read on dummies.

“When Governor Miller began his first term in January, 19991, only four percent of the total superior court judgeships were held by women, and four percent were held by African-Americans. Overlap between these two groups meant that only six percent of the judgeships were not held by white males. During Governor Miller’s administration, he appointed 21 women and 15 African-Americans to the superior courts. Overall, 43 percent of Governor Miller’s superior court appointments were minority or female.” Signed, Sealed, and Delivered By Sarah Eby-Ebersole, Zell Miller

Another fact for the masses. This will hurt the race baiters. Governor Miller appointed the first woman and the first African-American woman to the Georgia Supreme Court.

Gorilla glue is racist, indeed!

Oops, missed “melissa’s mom”. Well, I’m sure Shirley Franklin or her successor may find another use for my property tax money. (Personally, I’d like her to start paying the medical bills of our disabled APD officers again.) However, if it’s not going to fund a public hospital, that particular component of my overall tax bill will shift. The point I was trying to make is that we have to look very closely at the impact of one program on other programs.

Jim Hanson of NASA, who I find very credible, has estimated that we have a very short period of time in which to act to reverse the course of climate change, about 8 years at this point. Many other scientists agree, and some don’t. You are correct in stating that the results may be years down the road. I think 100 years is too long a projection…20 to 25 years for severe impact is my read. And whether you agree or not, there are scientists who think the impact has arrived…remember Katrina.

Do you know what you’re agreeing with? The first two parts of first comment are just mind numbingly inane and insane.

“Today, we’re spending like we’re Paris Hilton,”
Previous administration kinda dumped a whole lot of money on Iraq. Most of it after the mission was supposedly accomplished.

“regulating like we’re Ralph Nader”
Is this a bad thing? Nader helped make seatbelts mandatory in cars. He’s for protecting the environment and is against corruption. Yeah, all of us should be against that.

There are some really moronic comments about this story. If anything, Zell exhibited poor judgment by referring to a product that could be interpreted as racist, particularly by people looking to make such a connection.

Whether it is in fact racist depends on why he chose that product. If he chose it because he thinks of it as the strongest glue around — I use it and it’s way better than Crazy Glue — that isn’t racist. If he said it and he meant to draw a comparison between Obama and a guerilla, it was. But none of you know what was actually in the man’s head. You can speculate all you want, but if you claim to “know” you’re just projecting your own bias into what you want his thoughts to be.

I don’t exclude the possibility that the statement could reflect prejudice. But on balance, I think it’s more likely than not an innocent reference to a pretty cool product. I will not, however, act as if I “know” with any degree of certainty, and we’d all be better off if people saved the racist epitaph for situations where the evidence is more compelling.

Have you not been watching the news? Have you even left your house since Nov.? The world is in worse shape now than it has been since the late 70’s. Obama was a smooth talker, but is now revealing himself to the world. He has done this to the extent that France and Germany think he is too far left. He bridged gaps? What gaps? You know what, you’re right. More and more people who voted for him are beginning to see just how big of a mistake they made, and are coming together with their level headed, logically thinking, rational countrymen and women, and we will put a stop to this. If the dems don’t destroy their own party before the 2010 elections, the GOP will take care of what’s left. Obama quickly pushing through a spending bill that was over $1,000,000,000,000 that has done jack to help most of America and planning a health care plan that will tax the only people in our country with money left another $1,000,000,000,000 is what you should be worried about. Some here won’t like it but it is all of our country and we all need to be informed, not in lala land. It might be easier not to think for yourselves but it will still impact all of our lives. This site was selected by the United States Library of Congress for its historical internet files. Tells about Obama’s family, history, political influences, education, his cabinet, his czars, etc. It also has a News section where his days in Presidency are detailed. It is very interesting. The more you read, the more perplexed you will be. The mainstream media channels (which most liberals watch) are no longer reliable sources of information. Just thought I’d share with any that have an interest in factual information that will certainly impact ALL of our lives, no matter which side you are on. Man, all you Democrats that are trying to make the Gorilla Glue comment are really sad given who ‘your’ president is trying to get on the Supreme Court and who you have as Vice-President. Two of the biggest racists around, and I am not even counting the race-baiters that support Obama and made it clear they are racists during the MJ funeral.

As for Obama, his ratings are plummeting and the Democrats here on the AJC boards still think he is great. Yes, he was elected, but every single one of you had better realize he is not doing what you want. If you think he is doing a good job, you are a sadly pathetic group of people who have no clue about what is best for this country.

He could turn things around, but I think he is already realizing that the Dems will be losing seats in the next election the way people are turning against them. He is trying to slam as many poor policies thru Congress as he can, because it will likely be another 20-30 years before the public forgets this ridiculous run as puts the Dems in charge of congress and the presidency.

You wanted him. You got him. Now watch him destroy your party just like Carter did. The good news for America is we are likely strong enough to survive the next four or eight years. After that, it will take us another decade to fix all the things the Democrats messed up, just like before. It’s a regular pattern. Change … yes, lets change the greatest country on the planet and make it just like all the countries falling apart. That’s a really good idea. Morons!

Obama needs to get off blaming former President Bush for our problems. Obama should be part of the solution and not part of the problem. He does not understand this and he has no clue as to what to do for this country. He continues to drag this country deeper into a quagmire that he has now originated. I wonder how many of those who voted for him now appreciate him. Furthermore I never thought I would see a Harvard graduate that could not make a speech without making all the mistakes of a beginner in a speech class with all of the “uh, uh and uh” that he spits out without a teleprompter. I’m so sick of people hollering “racists!” The love affair with Obama is ending thankfully. More people than ever out of work and where are those jobs he promised? Good paying jobs he promised. Unemployment at the highest rate since the Great Depression. They couldn’t wait…the stimulus package had to be passed immediately yet only 5% of the funds have been used…why the big hurry? Before anyone could change their minds? And now they’re talking about another stimulus! He said if we passed the stimulus package it would keep employment below 8%. It’s now over 10% in metro Atlanta and quickly rising to this level across the country. And, no taxes to under $250,000 yet it appears they’re going to tax our health benefits. Yes, that means you too! This is the very tax Obama slammed McCain about during the campaign! You wanted change? Well, you’ve got it but it’s far from the change you obviously envisioned. I wished the Obama administrative the very best and hoped he could keep this economy out of the ditch. Even with billions of dollars spent we’re still in the ditch. If you’re working you’re in a recession but if you’re unemployed you’re in a depression. The government is incapable of running “anything” with efficiency and now people want to turn our healthcare system over to them. What are you thinking? And, Cap & Trade…you need to know this will drive all manufacturing jobs (what’s left) overseas and of the more ridculous regulations will require that we “retrofit – green” our homes before we can even sell it. We’ve already lost a great deal of our home value, many have lost their retirements, many people are hurting in this economy yet all they want is to tax us more and more! These taxes are killing small businesses and jobs are certainly far from being created. How much do we give? Unless people take notice you’re going to be left in the middle of the street and lucky to be wearing your underwear! This is change you can believe in!

Our economy was flourishing until Bush stole election 2000 and ran amuck with the counrty and ruined our economy, i.e. his war in Iraq that should garner him war crimes charges. Bush-o-nomics is what has us in the mess we are in right now.
Obama is now the clean-up man and nothing he does will be able to satify all of the people because we need too much. Too many jobs are gone too many foreclosures too many everything negative.
People expect the president to work a miracle without spendding a dime, there is only one miracle worker. Things take time to work. Money takes time to filter throught the country.
I almost wish a Republican had been elected so that the blame for this situation would lay on the shoulders of the Republican party, fortunately my common sense said don’t leave the fire to jump into a bucket of gas with a lit match.
The only thing that will heal this wound is TIME.
**Please kill the racial banter, all that it does is kill the message, alter the focus of discussion, and make you sound ignorant. I.E. I have nothing valid to say so let me make this entire discussion about race.**

When Zell left to make this speech who was left guarding Bush’s removed Air National Guard flight training files?

I am inspired by this brave old marine’s comment. Zell is a true patriot. This country is on a fast track to bankruptcy. We all need to wake up before it’s to late.

Way to go Zell! You are the only person with some balls to tell it like it is. I have some great friends that are black and they just laugh at how everyone tries to turn this kind of stuff into a racist comment. They too are tired of blacks trying to play every little thing as a race card. They didn’t vote for Obama and the few that did realize what a mistake that was. But, they actually think for themselves and don’t try to put black and white with every comment that someone makes!

Zell Miller should switch parties already. He knew exactly what he was saying by using the term “gorilla” glue in his comments against his President. You’re not as slick as you think you are, my friend.

Funny how these nut jobs were quiet while Bush/Cheney started costly wars and ruined the nation. Now with only six months in office, they expect Obama to shoulder all the blame for what the past eight years brought us.

No! I don’t want to point a finger and blame anyone for the past. What happened then is history. Neither I nor you can change the past. GET ON WITH THE FUTURE. But, I do want to point a finger and worry about my future, my children’s future and my great Grand-children’s future. I want to know that AMERICA will still be a Free Democracy. With free enterprise, not free health insurance, free food stamps, free house payments, free car payment, free gasoline it just doesn’t work that way. There is no such thing as a FREE LUNCH you (we, American’s) WILL have to PAY and PAY we will. WE cannot spend our way out of this and GOVERNMENT cannot fix everything, sometimes you just have to get up and get the Gorilla Glue and fix it yourself.
