The solution is simple: in times of drought, Florida and Alabama will not be allocated more flow from Georgia than would naturally occur if the Georgia reservoirs did not exist. The notion that reservoirs in Georgia should be drained in times of drought to maintain an *unnatural* and *artificial* environment in Florida and Alabama is absurd. Given the droughts of the last few decades, those Apalachicola oysters would have died out quite *naturally* if not for the *artificial* environment created by excessive discharges from Lanier and the other Georgia reservoirs.

Hydropower -- one of the original purposes for which these dams were built -- means power generated from the gravitational flow of water. It DOES NOT mean cooling water for coal-fired plants (Florida) or nuclear plants (Alabama). The problem here is not Atlanta’s water consumption, and never has been. The problem is the perverted notion that water in Georgia’s reservoirs should be used to artificially reengineer the natural environment in Florida and Alabama during times of drought. Again, the solution is simple: in times of drought, Florida and Alabama should not be allocated more flow from Georgia than would naturally occur if the Georgia dams did not exist. Indeed, if that fair and common sense approach had been taken during the last 3 years, Lanier would have never been stressed and would be at full pool right now.

TO WHAT GETS ME--- The problem with Florida is it is flat and can't contain dammed water without spreading out over many many square miles. Alabama has a more hilly topography which makes for good dams. Alabama has massive unused fresh water. Florida has salt water filter plants already. The problem is they don't want to spend the money for this problem. They want Georgia to pay all expenses which is clearly unfair. Any judge of character can see into this wrong doing. The federal government should step in and help the region. What about stimulus money? We're talking multi billions and billions of dollars here.

Midtowner -- FYI. 98% of the water useage for the power plants such as Plant McDonough are supplied for turbine steam condesation and reactor cooling heat transfer. All of this water is returned to the river but at elevated temps. The corp meeting clearly stated that during 8-07 and 12-31-07, the poewr plants were simply along for the ride. The 5,000 CFS at Watts dam was for endangered mussels.

I suggest everyone concerned with this problem attend future corp meetings. Visit their website. Or you can call Consumer Affairs Dept. in the Mobile Corp. office. They are very receptive to your comments and questions. If you see an abnormal release while driving over the dam, say during a rainy month, call them and they will call the dam operator to see what is the reason and will call you back with an explanation. Don't believe me? Make a quick call. They are listed in Directory Assistance, Mobile, Ala.

What this disagreement is focused on was the release of Lake Lanier water during the drought between Aug 2007 and Dec 31 2007 which severly dropped the level from 1068 - 1051 in five months.

In the Corp meeting in Cumming, GA in May 2008, Col. Jorgenson clearly admitted the release was to meet EPD requirements of minimum 5,000 CFS at Watts Dam on Lake Seminole for endangered mussels, even though no study supported this requirement and that it would take 3 years to study the problem(He said that 5000 CFS was simply the 50 year historical minimum norm). So during the drought Lanier had to produce the water for this 5000 CFS. Furthermore, they admitted that the water load in Atlanta was not the cause of the dropping lake level. During that period, 90% of the water released totally bypassed Atlanta.

Many people have their life savings in the properties and businesses on the lake. Many have their life savings, retirements and their children's education tied to their property value on the lake. Certainly anyone in their right mind would not value a worm or a useless mussel above 20,000 lake home owners and their life savings. Obviously the EPD plan is flawed. The mussles have been in Florida an esimated 250,000 years -- that's a fact, and they certainly have suffered many droughts, not just the recent on last year. The damn was built just 50 years ago.

Certainly infrastructure projects in Alabama and Florida need to be done. Look at a map of Alabama and you can see it is covered with lakes and rivers. Florida is surrounded by water. To this point NOTHING has been done to solve this problem.

If I had a fellow Floridian in the same position, I would simpathize. I would say "Georgia, build some infrastructure. Talk about wise usage of Stimulus $$$ !!!

Gary...Two years ago at the height of the drought twice as much water was flowing OUT of Lanier as into it. Florida was getting twice as much water as it would have gotten naturally during such a severe drought. In other words, Georgians were sending their stored up water to Florida so the mussels could survive. All the while we were cutting water usage by 20% and Floridians were watering as if there were no tomorrow. I'm with the folks above. I decided to boycott Florida a long time ago. If they want to cut off our water then I certainly won't spend a dime in that state. After all of those years of helping Floridians out when they have had hurricanes they respond to our natural disaster not by being helpful, but by attempting to cut off our water completely! It is difficult for me to comprehend their viewpoint, or to understand why Atlantans would spend any money in Florida. True, we are only 5 million strong, but we could make our voices heard!
