Here is the official statement from the University of Mississippi Chancellor Dan Jones on the reaction last night of some Ole Miss students to President Obama’s victory over Gov. Mitt Romney.
University police were notified by students shortly before midnight Tuesday that Twitter chatter was indicating students were gathering near the student union to protest the results of the election. The officers found 30-40 students gathered in front of the union, and over the next 20 minutes the gathering had grown to more than 400 students, many of whom were chanting political slogans. The crowd was ordered to disperse by university police, and after about 25 minutes students had returned to residence halls. About 100 students gathered again at one hall, and university police dispersed the group and made two arrests for disorderly conduct, including one for public intoxication and one for failure to comply with police orders.
“While we are grateful that there were no injuries and there was no property damage, we are very disappointed in those students who took a very immature and uncivil approach to expressing their views about the election,” said University of Mississippi Chancellor Dan Jones. “The gathering seems to have been fueled by social media, and the conversation should have stayed there.”
“Unfortunately, early news reports quoted social media comments that were inaccurate. Too, some photographs published in social media portrayed events that police did not observe on campus. Nevertheless, the reports of uncivil language and shouted racial epithets appear to be accurate and are universally condemned by the university, student leaders and the vast majority of students who are more representative of our university creed.”
Jones said, “Parents are being notified that it’s a normal day on campus and that one of America’s safest campuses is safe again this morning, though all of us are ashamed of the few students who have negatively affected the reputations of each of us and of our university. We are initiating a thorough review of this incident to determine the facts and any follow-up actions that may be necessary.”
Jones said, “We are reminding our students of relevant statements within the university creed: The University of Mississippi is a community of learning dedicated to nurturing excellence in intellectual inquiry and personal character in an open and diverse environment. As a voluntary member of this community: I believe in respect for the dignity of each person. I believe in fairness and civility. I believe in personal and professional integrity.”

Let’s see, some white students were exercising their freedom of speech and freedom of assembly over a political event, a few racial epithets were overheard, which Obama’s daughters probably hear worse on any given hip hop recording, and the politically correct media is acting as though they were breaking out the fire hoses and police dogs in the Selma march.
Lord knows we can’t have white kids becoming racially aware.
Interesting though, Maureen is quick to print when whites act up, but where was she on these glorious events:

Oh ok, so they’re supposed to get a pass because some other black kids did it?? You are sick, and you are exactly what’s wrong with this country. I assure you that had this been black kids, instead of sending them to their rooms, they would have been sent to jail. Ole Miss’s history is deeply rooted in racism and its the sole foundation they were built on. I don’t care if you’re black, white, green or Hispanic… YOU DO NOT GET A PASS. They were wrong and their outrageous behavior should be brought to the forefront cause lord knows it would be on CNN, CSpan, ABC, Fox News and every other major media outlet had they been black. Get over yourself. Wrong is wrong no matter what color you are!!!

What the heck do you mean by “racially aware”? From where I stand, it looks like “give me an excuse to act like a fool”. Sorry, I don’t accept skin color as a reason to act a fool, and neither should you.

The racism of yesteryear has come full circle in our county. The entire world embraced our choice of a black President four years ago and most nations of the world still support him. The fringe elements of Republican sect have crept through into the mainstream once again with conservative mouthpieces planting the seeds of hate. The only doubt lies here at home rooting from bigotry. Watch the white hands paint Obama in Blackface at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2012/10/bamboozling-obama.html

Lee, you can cite all the examples you want but I think people like Maureen hold blacks to a lower standard like many liberals do. Many examples like the ones you linked can be found but they do not fit the narrative. Just think how she defended Lowrey’s remark about all white people going to hell, Maureen let us know that Lowrey is 91. Lowrey made a similar remark a few years ago and I am sure she found an excuse for that as well, maybe because he was having a bad day or something. I think their is a term for people that hold others to lower standards because of race. Maureen, why is it you only bring up actions of whites you disagree with ?

Normally, I would feel bad for Ole Miss as a few of their students reenforce old stereotypes of their troubled past, but not now. Now that Ole Miss is emerging again as a power in the SEC West, my moral indignation knows no bounds! The news stories and video of the “Anti-Obama Riot of 2012″ should be shown to every potential football recruit to keep the Rebs in the basement of the SEC where they belong!
All kidding aside, much more troubling than a few drunken college students however, is the posting above by Mr. “Lee.” As soon as I saw the use of the term “racially aware,” I suspected it was probably one coined by a hate group. I Googled “whites become racially aware” found the most appalling mix of white supremacist vitriol I have seen in years. Apologize for the racist undergrads all you want Sir. We Now know what you are. Funny you should have such a rich collection of black people acting bad videos at your fingertips. Don’t tell us where you got them, we can guess.

college students and immature….I thought those were synonyms. All we do by giving this too much attention and debate is justify its existence and encourage it. The sooner we quit talking about this and the less time we give it, the sooner these kids will get bored and move on to something else. They’ll learn- life has a way of confronting your ignornance and either changing it or leaving you by the wayside for it. I don’t support what these kids did, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s very minor compared to what many less visible but clearly more sinister groups will use this election to fuel. Those are the groups we need to be aware of and watch their actions.

I’m sorry: what were they protesting?!
The accuracy of the vote count?
The fairness of the voting process?
The lopsided influence of shadowy PAC donors?
The quality of the campaigns in terms of platform, debate and message?
No.
Ole Miss students threw a tantrum because they didn’t like the black guy winning.
I’m sorry. But you don’t get to overthrow an election by creating an angry mob.

@Lee… Amongst you and other white Americans around the country, yes people are acting on their “free speech” but if your “Free Speech” threatens any people, or property, they should be subject to arrest. Being intoxicated and burning signs, doesn’t = free speech. They wanted a fight, and any person who wants to get mad about the election fine, but if they yell racist antics, they are merely jealous, misguided, fearful scumbags who should grab hold of diversity to save themselves from looking like fools. Its too bad you that by your comment you seem just as ill informed and immature as the students you speak about. God Bless.

And to think, this is the bright shining future of the Republican party. I’m a fiscal conservative but I’m tired of the fossilized social conservatives throwing election after election to the Democrats with their sickening nudge-nudge-wink-wink-racism, “legitimate rape” mysogyny, and constant homophobia. I swore off ever voting for a Democrat again after I saw the horror that 40 years of Democrat rule had wrought in South Chicago while listening to Democrats on the news call that “compassion” during the 1995 budget fight. But now I’m swearing off voting Republican as well. It is time for the GOP to die for the good of America.

That University is full of them, just as universities are filled with other racists, anarchists, communists, centerists, liberals, reactionaries, and those all along the spectrum. Glad to see the police sent all the little drunk frat boys home (it’s Ole Miss, you can gurantee they were frat boys).
Now…let’s say the protest had been something like suppressing free speech by removing all the campus newspapers in ‘protest’ of some article of free speech they didn’t like. Sorry to say, that wouldn’t even be newsworthy as it has happened so often, but is seen as an OK action. Just as ignorant and scarier in the sense that they normally have had the weight of administration approval behind them (granted, Ole Miss is not the most liberal of spots)

Private citizen makes a good point about Obama’s race. He is more white than black. His mother is a lilly white Kansas mom. His Kenyan dad is black;however, Obama was raised by a white family and a whtie society. His white grandparents and white mother raised him in Hawaii and for a time his mother lived overseas in a rural Asian culture.
I’m glad Obama has a mixed race but I’m angry that the mom’s race and her influence is not acknowledged. Obama’s mom must have been an awesome human being to raise her son without Obama’s dad, who split when Obama was two. For a time they lived on welfare, yet, look at the values she instilled in Obama. Look at the work she put into his education. Obama is president today because of the values of a wonderful mom. Why is it that his mother is rarely given credit? Perhaps because she is white or perhaps because she is a woman and a woman’s influence is discredited?
Even Tiger Woods doesn’t call himself black. His mother is Asian. She raised him and influenced him but he is always called black. One look at his lovely almond eyes will tell you he is of mixed race too.
We women raise the next generation. We influence our children. We are the ones working hard to ensure our children get an education. We are the ones who take the chiildren to church. We are the ones to shoulder the financial and emotional extreme hardships when the fathers in our society bug out.
And we are called the “weaker” sex.

It’s true that, if college black kids act in a similiar manner as these white ones, the media will show much more tolerance.
This is what’s known as a double standard. It’s one of the primary reasons civil rights progress has esentially come to a halt. Most blacks know this, but will not give up their double stadard status for anything. The ability to stick it to whitey with either little or no media criticism is just too good to give up.

As an alum of Ole Miss, I am saddened and disgusted by the actions of these young people. The students who were responsible should be punished. They need to be taught that while political opinions are acceptable, hateful demonstrations are not.
When received my email from Chancellor Jones about this incident, I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach because I KNEW what the reaction would be. This event would not be seen an event that is symptomatic of a deeply divided nation, but would instead be viewed as an event that is symptomatic of the racism that apparently only exists in the South. For a number of reasons, Ole Miss has become a symbol of the dark past of the South. I want to remind people that we, as alums, are not supporters of this sort of pernicious behavior.
Since I was student, the University has worked diligently to create a welcoming diverse environment which is no easy task considering the weight of history in Mississippi. We have “banned” for lack of a better word, the confederate flag. We replaced Colonel Rebel as our on field mascot. We have built a statue commemorating and celebrating the memory of James Meredith. We have had 4 African American Student Body Presidents, and this year our home coming queen is a lovely African American young lady. Finally, on campus we are commemorating the horrible events of 50 years ago. Because in Mississippi, the past isn’t even the past, we are acutely aware of the importance of acknowledging the wrongs of the past while trying to forge a new future.
Many of these actions have been unpopular.( Ironically, some of the alums, students, and supporters of other SEC institutions have been the most vocal in berated us for “caving in to political correctness by giving up our honored Southern traditions.” ) They have been unpopular but they were the right. (The members of our Ole Miss family are more important than any symbol ever will be.) These students have disgraced our University, and have embarrassed the Ole Miss family.
Four years ago, we welcomed President Obama and Senator McCain to Oxford for a presidential debate, and the nation was given a glimpse into the special character of the town and University that those of us who know it intimately love and cherish. I ask that you remember the best of what we are. Welcoming. Hospitable. Loving. Don’t paint us with a broad brush because of the actions of an ignorant few.

In retrospect, I shouldn’t be too hard on Maureen. In the world of journalism, dog bites man – not a story, man bites dog – it is a story.
Ergo:
Blacks behave badly, not a story.
White behave badly, story.
In this case, it wasnt even “bad” behavior. You had a peaceful gathering of politically aware youths who dispersed when the police asked them to. A couple were arrested because they had too much to drink. There was no “rioting”.
Too bad we couldn’t have witnessed black student behavior if Obama lost the election.

Maureen,
Part of the racial problems that occur are because there is really not much dialogue. There are too few Ms. Daniels as you pointed out yesterday. Jesse and Al keep the flames fanned, yet run and hide when real issues like the daily killings in Chicago, the problems in Detroit, and many other black enclaves occur because there is no profit ($) in it for them. For God’s sake, Victor Hill got elected! Many feel the liberal agenda of Obama is more of a problem: Obama Care, gay issues, etc. Some of the protests, I bet, were more about issues. I am certain that had Herman Cain won the nomination Ole Miss as well as other places would have supported him vehemently. Let blacks massacre each other all the time….and it gets a little press. (Except Chicago….) Let a few college kids do something PERCEIVED as racial, and whoopty-do!!! What happened at Ole Miss pales in comparison to the EVERY-DAY happenings in the heretofore mentioned metropolitan areas. Funny (and I guess this does sound bad) there are truly bad folks everywhere. But, find a larger city w/o a “minority” majority and compare murders, crime stats, etc. Nobody will talk about that; it is “politically incorrect and insensitive!”

@Skipper, There is a legitimate argument to be made about news coverage, but not the one that you make. There is far more attention to crimes when whites are the victims. When a white woman is abducted or missing, it gets the front page. Many black parents have to plead for coverage of their missing teens.
As for college kids and crime, I disagree. White parents have more resources and often prevent their kids from even getting into the system in the first place when they are caught vandalizing a park or getting into fights.
To its credit, the media have taken a hard look at how it covers crime and are doing a better job.

@mom, This is getting comical. For centuries, white men have elected white men. Take a look at our Legislature. Once, a friend commented to me how a black colleague only went to lunch with other black reporters.
At the time, we were walking to lunch — six of us, all white reporters.
We can’t see the truth when we are in the middle of it.
The Bible addressed this succinctly: “Why do we see the speck in our brother’s eye but fail to notice the beam in our own eye?

@Lee, Here is what is so funny about your comment. I read college newspapers online every now and then to keep up. Just read a college newspaper online reporting seven rapes reported on campus in the span of two months, two in fraternities. The college is an elite private college, almost all white.
Why hasn’t that been reported?
Because there is an effort to keep that news out of the public view.
You are so wrong on so many points about news coverage slanted against reporting black crime when the opposite is true. Spend some of your time looking at research on which crimes and which victims get covered.
It is shock to me how many people comment on this blog without a shred of information beyond their limited world views. There’s this thing called the Internet. You can get a view beyond your front yard.

@Maureen,
You may have a point. After all, if they coverd all the murders, ‘jackings, etc. in Chicago, there would be no time to see the weather or sports. Also, I was referring to over-all crime…..ESPECIALLY MURDERS! I appreciate your politics, and you have a right to your opinion. Both of us can tell a tale OR express an opinion, but the stats don’t lie! You ever looked at who is murdering who? Comparing a few drunk college kids who may not like the liberal agenda and pointing them out when other “communities” have mayhem on a daily basis ain’t solvin’ the problem!
