Parents at two of Atlanta’s most prestigious private schools are reeling from the child pornography arrests of school staff.
A few days ago, the AJC reported that a Paideia school janitor was arrested on child porn charges. In a letter, the Paideia headmaster informed parents that the janitor allegedly told federal investigators he placed hidden cameras in the boys’ and girls’ bathrooms at the private Druid Hills academy.
Headmaster Paul Bianchi wrote that Josh Ensley, a janitor for Paideia for 17 years, was arrested after he received illegal materials through the mail. Agents charged him with possession of child porn after a search of his home computer.
A search of the bathrooms at Paideia, which instructs students ages 3 through 18, turned up no recording devices, according to Bianchi.
Now, it is the Pace Academy headmaster sending a shocking letter home this evening to parents at the Buckhead school announcing the arrest of veteran fine arts teacher William Villemez for “possession of child pornographic images, which were purchased from his home computer. These images came to light as a result of a multi-year federal investigation, which we learned about today.”
In 2010, federal agents began investigating a Canadian company that offered child porn videos for sale via the U.S. Postal Service and the Internet. In May 2011, authorities executed a search warrant at the business and seized computer records and printed records. Villemez’s name and address — and the DVDs he had ordered — were on the customer lists, according to the affidavit.
Pace headmaster Fred Assaf said Villemez “is no longer employed by Pace Academy. We are cooperating with federal agents as they continue their investigation”
Assaf stressed that, according to federal investigators, the fine arts teacher “has not involved any current or former Pace students in this situation, and there is no evidence of inappropriate physical contact between the teacher and Pace students or other children.” Villemez has no record of previous criminal activity, said Assaf, in his letter to parents.
According to the letter:
Our faculty was made aware of the situation immediately after school today, and we will meet with students in the Middle and Upper Schools tomorrow morning. The emotional well-being of our students is our primary concern at this time. This news is incredibly shocking and upsetting to all of us in the Pace community, and we know that healing will take time.
We also know that this will be difficult to explain to students, but I believe that it is best to be clear and honest with them. I would advise every parent to use his or her discretion in discussing these matters with their children; however, as much as we might want to shield them from the situation, this may serve as an opportunity to discuss the pervasive issue of pornography in our culture. I also encourage you to bring any concerns to my attention immediately.
We are working with our faculty, counselors and outside experts to ensure that we are prepared to handle any questions or issues that arise as a result of this situation. Please know that our counselors and administrators are available for students and parents with questions or concerns.
We will continue to share pertinent information as it becomes available and welcome questions during this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Fred Assaf, Head of School
Let me stress that both men stand accused, not convicted. Please keep that in mind when commenting.
The AJC now has a story online about a 17-year-old football player at the Westminster Schools sexually assaulting a teammate in the gym showers at the prestigious institution.
Earlier today, the school sent an email to parents, school trustees and staff alerting them what police are investigating as a sexual assault.
“I write to you in order to express deep concern regarding an incident that took place last week involving a few students on the varsity football team,” school president William Clarkson wrote. “I can assure you that we have taken all steps within the school’s strict guidelines and protocols regarding such matters, including the fulfillment of our responsibility to report this particular incident to the Atlanta police. They are now in charge of the investigation, and we are cooperating fully with them.”

I find it interesting how some bloggers have a bias against Westminster and probably other private schools. They are quite transparent. I am a product of public school and made a career, a very nice one, working associated with public schools. They are the essence of our nation’s strength. But the prejudice espressed her is rooted in jealousy and nothing more. There is no evidence of anything except painting with a broad, very broad brush. Shame on the bloggers.

All I’m Saying Is…. I’m pretty familiar with all 3 stories — all 3 guys can face some pretty serious jail time for what they’ve been accused of.. Pace and Paidea immediately appear to have removed the men from their schoolhouses — There seems to be some questions regarding how quickly Westminister addressed the offending behavior. My post went more to questioning how “egregious” the actual act of the purchase of the videos was… stupid, most definitely. Receipt in ones own name at a home address … dumb. But should that act be punishable along with the rapists, the murderers and the Madoffs? I was trying to draw a distinction between the consumer of the videos and the guys (I’m assuming) making them and distributing them; the parents of the folks in them, whether there should be some distinction based on the ages of the children (e.g. older teens vs. under 12 girls) and a definite distinction with the janitor places unauthorized cameras in bathrooms… I’m not sure I can answer my own questions … I’m just presenting them as food for thought.

Also — I think the privates get some “credit” for their ability to terminate as quickly as they did — story out — notification given and they were out a job. Try that in DCSS or APS or City of NY…. where there would be “process” concerns.

@AnotherComment – you made a child (who happens to be at Westminster) feel bad about their college application by trying to one up her with the comment that your public school educated daughter is being actively recruiting by the same college??? SHAME ON YOU. I guess no one ever taught you this valuable lesson: Money doesn’t buy class.

That janitor is copying Chuck Berry who put a camera in the public bathroom in his restaurant.

Westminster alum. I actually agree with you wholeheartedly. And you may not realize it but you basically said the same thing I said (perhaps with better grammar…. Or with a keyboard rather than an iPad)
Absolutely I think Westminster is the best school around. I am very proud to be an alum. The problem is the kids that think they are the best kids around and they, because of their parents, don’t think rules apply to them. Simple civility, kindness and sincerity are prominent among our students. But there are more than a few kids who do not have those qualities.
The example do the mom who told the girl about the employee being recruited by the school she was applying to is a perfect example. The mom did not initially say it to be mean….. It sounds like it would be a very normal thing to say.. But the girl was genuinely shocked that someone else was able to access something that she though was only available to her and her friends…
It is not her fault.
And like you said…. All it takes is a good ass whooping… Or real world experience.
So Westminster parents….. Make your kids wait in line…. Let older folks get in front of them… Give their chair up for a girl, lady or elderly person, take the neighbors trash out to the road…
And you had better start looking at their instagram and such or you will be a grandparent real soon…. That’s not just Westminster… But the kids are crazy with it right now,,

I went to Pace and was in their high school in the 70’s. One of my 11th grad friends dated a teacher there and we all hung out at his house. I have no idea if the school knew about their relationship. He no longer works there, it’s been over 30 years. I see him on FB now and then. My friend ended up with schizophrenia that came on in her adult years. I also have experienced divorcing a man who I found had child pornography all over his phone and computer, but the police and a GBI agent I spoke to all told me I needed to “let it go.” I know for sure of other women who find child pornography on their husband’s computers and go through divorces and it gets “negotiated”, rather than the perverted husbands being held accountable for their illegal activities. These people don’t just stop these kinds of activities. I wish the divorce judges and lawyers were more accountable to the behaviors that are exposed in the process. A lot of these people can be caught. One sign is watch out for the overly charming.
