Any nominees for the new UGA president?

Big news today for UGA. The AJC is reporting that University of Georgia President Michael Adams will announce Thursday that he will step down effective next year.

Any suggestions on replacements?

There are some dynamic young college presidents out there. I would love to see Georgia choose someone from outside the usual pool, someone who would shake up the campus and the status quo.

According to the AJC:

Adams, who has led the state’s flagship college for 16 years, will be 65 by the time he retires. During his tenure at UGA, the university has become more selective and is consistently ranked as one of the top 20 public colleges in the country. Meanwhile enrollment has grown by almost 6,000 students to nearly 35,000.

Adams is expected to publicly discuss his pending retirement to the campus, according to a state official and a high-ranking University System of Georgia employee who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Maureen says:
“I would love to see Georgia choose someone from outside the usual pool, someone who would shake up the campus and the status quo.”

Contrast that statement to this one:
“During his [Adams] tenure at UGA, the university has become more selective and is consistently ranked as one of the top 20 public colleges in the country. Meanwhile enrollment has grown by almost 6,000 students to nearly 35,000.”

What Maureen means:
She’d rather see a woman or a minority rather than someone chosen for their qualifications.

If Adams has done his job, one of his direct reports should be ready to step into the job. Why would you want to go outside the college if everything is going well? It’s called succession planning. Big companies do it all the time. The only time you should go outside if things are screwed up and you need a new direction.

Dynamic and young are not the qualities that interest me. UGA used to be known as a party school. Now, many of my best students covet admission to our Athens, GA university. If the future leader is 90 or 35, black, white, Baptist or Quaker…………..I don’t really care. I want someone who can maximize benefits for all stakeholders while containing costs, and maintaining academic excellence.

Id like to see someone that can continue the tradition that has been put in place for the last 20 years at UGA (that started with Chuck Knapp)….someone that can forward the academic rep that UGA is starting to recieve but also someone who will also support the athletics department…..there is no reason academically and athletically UGA cant be like Uni of michigan, UCLA, UNC chapel hill, or Virginia(maybe our sports would be better)

Let’s see now, what qualities did Adams bring to the table in addition to the school becoming one of the Southern havens for political correctness:
— ran off Vince Dooley who without question was one of the best AD’s
in the country
— looked the other way while the President of GA Crown had a rip roaring affair
with a highly succesful coach @ UGA
— consistently infuriated alumni and friends with his arrogant & condescending attitude.
Come to think of it, point # 3 describes Obama perfectly, but let’s all hope that the Board
of Regents can locate a successor who will be able to mend fences with the huge number of
UGA alumni that Adams consistently turned off over the years.

Good riddance to Michael Adams ! I am an alumni and now I will start giving to UGA. His political correctness and arrogance alienated people. The great part of an education at the University of Ga in the the late 1980’s was that the professors were not liberal or politically correct. They taught common sense and practical skills for the future unlike many left wing schools in the US. People can say what they want about UGA but if you live in Ga many of the business and government leaders attended this wonderful school. Once he fired Vince Dooley that was the final straw for me. Adams derived a lot of his so called success from the Hope Scholarship and this should not be overlooked.

Dr. Johnetta Cole and Presdient Obama ( if he is not too busy winning his second term and running the country) are more than qualified to run UGA. Cole taught briefly at the University of California, Los Angeles (1964) and directed the Black Studies program at Washington State University at Pullman (1969-70) before teaching in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (1970-83), where she also served as provost of undergraduate education from 1981 to 1983. While at the University of Massachusetts, she played a pivotal role in the development of the university’s W.E.B. Du Bois Department of African-American Studies. In 1983, she joined the faculty of Hunter College, where she directed the Latin American and Caribbean Studies program. Cole also taught in the Anthropology department of Emory University where she is now Presidential Distinguished Professor Emerita.

Cole has served at the Merck Board of Directors since 1994. She is the first woman elected to the board of Coca Cola.[4] From 2004 to 2006, Cole was the Chair of the Board of Trustees of United Way of America[5] and serves on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Greater Greensboro.[6]

In all seriousness I have an extreme distaste for President Adams, yes his leadership of UGA has transitioned it into a very selective institution (which some may consider a good thing) however, his alienation of donors and supporter has created a minuscule endowment for such an old and large institution as UGA. Former Florida International University President Modesto Maidique transitioned his institution into one of the fastest growing public research universities in the US by doubling enrollment, increasing academic programs and sponsored research. Of course Maidique had been president of FIU for over two decades however, he transformed the commuter college into a well-respected university.

I would have loved to see former Wake Forest Provost Jill Tiefenthaler become Adams successor however, she has recently taken the reins as president of Colorado College in 2011.
The most excellent choice I would think of is University of South Florida VP of Research and Innovation, Karen Holbrook, who is a former UGA Provost and former President of The Ohio State University. Holbrook may have a stellar track record however, her age of 69 may appear unattractive to the selection committee.

My hope is that UGA will select a leader that embraces change – and yes I know is cliche but one must have hope! Sharon Gaber (Arkansas Provost), Garnett Stokes (Florida State Provost, former UGA Dean), Maureen Grasso (longtime UGA Grad School Dean since 2002), my wish for any of these admirable leaders to be given a chance at transforming UGA into a world leader with aspirations of creating a place like no other.

The ideal candidate is someone who is proven as a college president already. Someone who understands the culture of Georgia and the university and who truly loves UGA. Someone who can unite the alumni, faculty and students. Someone who puts UGA above his or her own self-interests.
I would not consider any current UGA administrators because they are all Adams syncophants and are too rooted in the Adams way. It is time for a new personality and someone who will sweep with a broad broom. UGA needs to stop being a farm team for the Board of Regents.

I am wondering if bloggers are representative of the larger population or if the choice to engage in blogging originates only from certain segments of same. I am concerned about what I read in these responses. There is too much emphasis on race and on left vs. right. Georgia may have a large African-American population, but I don’t relish the thought of the UGA President as someone whose background includes an emphasis on studies related to a single segment of the population, nor an emphasis on ‘diversity.’ It’s a catch-word that is beginning to alienate more and more Americans who feel that it is an attempt to exclude all who don’t fit neatly into a well-defined sub-group with lobbying power. I don’t care about collegiate or professional sports and many of my advanced students do not seek to attend UGA for its sports programs or prowess. We could separate competitive sports completely from public education, house and operate it separately, and I would be thrilled to see it happen. We will have to redefine minority in this country before too long. Fewer may be able to make money or gain power as the rich do, through connections and affiliations. Even fewer may be able to count on others to support them, as do those in the under class, living their “Jerry Springer” lifestyles. The twisted values and behaviors of the very rich and the very poor are best abandoned when searching for someone to hold this position. Perhaps such a valued institution requires a triumvirate leadership, or a panel, or a ‘board’ without one person as figurehead. I wonder if people who aspire to such a position had to sign contracts that limited their terms, assured them of NO golden parachute, including no membership in TRS, etc., as well as no ‘gifts’ from anyone before, during, or after as remuneration for services rendered, no opportunity to “parlez” this post into something even bigger and better,……..and hey, 600+K is a bit steep, so let’s go 150K………….who would apply? Perhaps no one open to influence-peddling, bribes, etc……………Oh, that’s right………we’re only looking for martyrs to fill the trenches in our K-12 classrooms…………none needed at the top……..

He left our state in ruins, spent $25+ million on a fishing debacle near his home that no one uses, failed to bring any significant number of jobs to our state all while allowing the education system state-wide to flounder due to cuts in state-funding. If you want to know why tuition at state colleges has increased look at the incredible decreaase in state funding – somebody has to pay and under Perdue the state opted not to do so. Our Board of Regents will be looking not just for an educator but for someone who has the business skills needed to manage roughly $1Billion budget. Leave them alone to do their work. One sure thing, whoever they choose will not make everyone happy every day but will be an exceptional leader who moves UGA into the next decades of educating our young people.

I don’t know of any named candidates off the top of my head, but it should without a doubt, be someone that Adams has lined up as a successor. He has done a tremendous job at raising the academic standards at UGA and his successor should be someone who will follow the same path and continue charting the University of Georgia to the top of academic institutions.

I know Adams has a history with the UGA fan base. Trust me, I was none to pleased with his handling of the Vince Dooley “retirement” nor how he handled the Jim Harrick situation and I bleed red and black just as the next guy. However, his primary job is to protect the university and ensure it’s continued academic success. I for one salute the overall good job he did.

After reading the comments, with the exception of ‘John’, I am extremely happy that [probably] 98% of you have nothing o do with selecting the next UGA President. As a non-minority and conservative, Iwoudl hope most of you want diversity, but it seems that most of you want the same cancer that has plagued our society since slavery.

Race, Presidential politics should be left out of this blog. We we cannot get along with the liberals and minority races in our country, we are doomed. Patriotism and love of country means wanting the best for the area of concern, not wantting your race or friends to be at the helm. If it’s a black, Jew or woman, why not. The cacusian male has been in charge for so long and we are no beter in most areas of their leadership. President Obama has done the best possible job that he can, considering teh in-fighting. Imagine how better our country woudl be if member of COngress and the House would just work for solutions. As a converative, President Obama has done a much better job that President Bush. Perhaps most of you shoudl have objected to President Bush decision, especially withthe war and our ecomomy would [probably] be much better.

I give all the credit to the students and athletes. My nominees are Beverly Hall, Shirley Franklin, Cornell West, Willard Romney, Newt Gingrich, or Sarah Palin.

Don’t know Garnett Stokes but sounds like a very good candidate. Former Dean of UGA’s largest college and now FSU was so impressed they hired her as Provost. That speaks volumes. I would bet she will be in the mix of top candidates. I don’t see any reason to drag this out. The search should start immediately, and when the right person is identified, Adams should gracefully step down. He didn’t allow Dooley to dictate the timing of his departure, and he should be allowed to dictate his own timing. If he has decided to leave, then the clock needs to start ticking.

…the last time UGA did a “national” seach for this job we ended up with Dr. Adams – came from mighty Centre College in Danville, KY and brought his liberal arts mentality of a small, but well funded, collegl to a major university where some of his ideas were not welcomed, yet he did improve the national prominence of the university ten-fold…

Gere Morehead would be a great internal candidate. I would also like to see someone with an international background considered. That is, not a foreign candidate, but someone with some international affairs or business experience. At the end of the day, it is all about money, so someone who is a good fundraiser would be important, too.

I agree with John 9:28 pm. I think Adams has really underperformed. Given the advantage of the Hope scholarship at retaining bright kids in state it’s hard to explain why Georgia isn’t right up there with UVA and UNC for the best public universities.

Adams should get little to no credit for improving the academic standing. It is all about the HOPE keeping more of the bright kids from Georgia from going out of state or to private colleges. He should get partial credit for nearly bankrupting HOPE with outrageous annual tuition increases. We all know when the government is blindly paying for something the price goes WAY up.

I’ve been blogging as “Prof” for some time now, and just want to say that I’m not the one using that name at 10:38 am…funny entry though.

Can’t suggest anyone, but it probably will be someone fairly unknown who is ambitious to shape UGA into a school that can survive financially, keep its strong academic emphasis, and change its reputation as a party school for rich white kids. I predict that he/she will leave in about 5-7 years for a better school, for UGA would make an excellent stepping-stone.

I moved to Georgia about 20 years ago. I have watched UGA grow from a rural University to a respected institution. Part of this was under Michael Adams’ tenure. I realize that many do not like him due to his stance on several athletic decisions. However, he has repositioned the University so it is positioned to be respected in the future. The next President will have the opportunity to build on this.

I think it is great that UGA aspires to be in the same category as Michigan, UNC, UVA and UCLA. Although UGA has become more competitive in admissions, it is still short compared to these other institutions regarding the academic profiles of the student body. What also separates these other schools from UGA are the significant endowments that they have. Although UGA has made great strides, it has actually lost ground to these schools since their endowments have grown while UGA’s has not. There is a huge gap, not only with these schools, but with other schools such as Florida, Georgia tech, etc.

With that said, UGA is well positioned to be consistently ranked as a top 25 public university. It will be important for the next President to be able to raise significant funds, especially since funds from the Hope Scholarship are declining. If the University aspires to grow its reputation, it needs to look outside the state of Georgia and recruit a President with both an academic and athletic vision.

My pick would be the current Provost at UGA, Jere Morehead. He has all the inside knowledge, and is one of the most politically deft individuals in academia. He will continue all the positive attributes of Adams, but he is extremely thoughtful and has an amazing ability to avoid mistakes. A great choice!
