Being pagan in Georgia: Do schools promote some religions while denigrating others?

UPDATE: Folks, I closed comments on this at 10 p.m. Friday. Have a great holiday weekend. Maureen

A common plaint on this blog is that religion has been banished from our public schools. The usual comment is that we have kicked God out of the schools.

But some argue that not all religions are met with hostility in the classroom, only those far outside the mainstream.

That complaint was made this month via an Internet campaign on behalf of a pagan family in Carroll County. Stephanie Turner said her 11-year-old son was singled out and punished after he took off the neopagan holiday of Samhain. Once the boy returned to class, his teacher allegedly questioned him and said,  “Paganism is not a religion.” Then, the teacher assigned a class essay on “How Christmas started,” according to the complaint.

(You can read more details on the “Turner Family Support” Facebook page.)

I exchanged e-mails with Turner seeking information about her son’s experience, but then received a call from Selena Fox, founder and executive director of the Lady Liberty League, an organization that advocates for religious freedom for Wiccans, Neopagans and other nature religion practitioners.

A Wisconsin resident, Fox explained to me in our telephone conversation that she was calling on Turner’s behalf to let me know that they were attempting to meet with the school district. In the meantime, websites and pagan organizations that took up the Turner family cause urged people to send e-mails of protest to the Carroll school chief, principal and teacher. And apparently they did.

When I contacted Carroll County two weeks ago, spokeswoman Elena Schulenburg told me: We are currently working with the parent to review this matter. The e-mail was circulated over the weekend ahead of our opportunity to meet with the parent to discuss any concerns. As always, our focus is on the safety and welfare of all students.

Accompanied by four advocates including an attorney, Turner met with Carroll school officials on Dec. 12. She and her advocates issued a statement later on the outcome of that meeting: First, a sincere apology for recent events and misunderstandings has been given by school administration and accepted by the family. Second, the Bowdon Elementary School guidance counselor will educate staff and students about honoring and accepting the differences that make us individuals. Third, procedures have been put in place to ensure classroom activities don’t alienate students.

In a Dec. 13 radio interview on Pagan Warrior Radio hosted by Selena Fox, Turner thanked the national pagan community for its support, saying, “It has helped my son so much knowing that he is not alone.”

The New York Times has a good piece about the encroachment of religion in public schools. Several of the examples of proselytizing occurred in Southern schools.

The New York Times story notes:

At a school assembly here in South Carolina on Sept. 1, a preacher described how Christ saved him from drugs, telling his rapt audience that “a relationship with Jesus is what you need more than anything else.” A rapper shouted the Lord’s praise to a light show and most of the audience stepped forward to pledge themselves to Christ while a few remained, uncomfortable, in their seats.

Such overt evangelizing would not be unusual at a prayer rally, but this was a daytime celebration in a public school gymnasium, arranged by the principal for sixth, seventh and eighth graders.  When the rapper posted a video on YouTube, announcing that “324 kids at this school have made a decision for Jesus Christ,” he drew unwelcome public and legal scrutiny to the event. It was the kind of religious advocacy that is increasingly coming to light, legal experts say, as school populations become more diverse and as the objection of non-Christians — or, in this case, the rejoicing of evangelists — is broadcast on the Internet.

In landmark decisions in 1962 and 1963, the Supreme Court barred official promotion of religion in schools. That principle has remained solid, if pilloried by conservatives who blame it for what they see as the nation’s moral and social decline. At the same time, the courts and Congress have also reinforced the rights of students to pray on their own and to form after-school religious clubs.

But battles over the place of religion in schools continue. This month, the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit demanding that the Chesterfield County, S.C., school district end what the suit describes as the continuing promotion of religion in several of its schools, including the middle school that held the prayer rally. The A.C.L.U. brought the suit on behalf of a seventh grader who said he was subjected to unwanted proselytizing and has been harassed for his avowals of atheism.

Christian legal advocates counter that such plain violations are far less common than the opposite problem: overzealous officials trying to cleanse the schools of religion, punishing students for protected speech like personal prayer or handing out devotional messages to their friends.

Watchdog groups like the A.C.L.U., Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Freedom From Religion Foundation say that in the last few years, they have learned more often about what they call blatant violations like the South Carolina rally. It is unclear, they say, whether the number of such events is growing, or whether they are now more likely to come to light. But still, these advocates say, even when clear violations occur, concerned families are often reluctant to bring legal challenges because they fear social hostility.

I am a Christian and teach in a PUBLIC school. Many of our students are of the Muslim faith and take time off to celebrate their religious holidays. They also finish the work they missed. We Christians are afforded days off for our holidays. I think that is asking enough. As a Christian, I respect the religious differences of others. I do not bring God or Jesus into my classroom because by LAW and by Rights I would also need to bring in Allah, Mohammad, Mother Nature, and the like. With the exception of the Pledge of Allegiance, God and Jesus were never part of my public education and I went to school in the 60’s and 70’s. The violence we see and read about in schools has very little to do with God being non-present. It has everything to do with the intolerance our children are learning IN THE HOME. A recent visit to the south brought me back to where intolerance was an accepted form in Chicago. It in of itself is the first problem. How can anyone proclaim to be a good Christian while judging people by the color of their skin, or the higher power they may or may not believe in. What makes these Christians right and everyone else wrong? How many of you Bible thumpers go screaming at a teacher when your child is accused of violating school rules? How many of you blame someone else for your child’s mistakes? How many of you check your child’s backpacks each day to assure their responsibilities are met? Which one of you look at the ratings of movies and video games before you allow your child to watch/play them? What gives any of us the right to judge and not expect to be judged back. You can hide behind your Holy Bible, but God can still see you. He can see the injustices you serve others who don’t happen to be just like you. He knows when you turn a blind eye to your child’s bullying another, something they learned was okay in the home. I challenge all of you posters to go back to raising your children the way you were raised so many years ago. Lock up your guns, or eliminate them completely from your homes. They were designed to kill, the children who do the killing are not, but the presence of a gun in the home makes it look like it’s okay because their parent endorse it by the mere presence of those weapons. You can blame God, or the lack of Him in our schools, but is this really the case? Many of you posters need to do some serious soul searching. Being a Christian does not make us above the next person anymore than being white, or back or another complexion. I will pray for all of your souls on my own time, in my private way. That can be done anytime, anywhere, without the lead of teachers and other school officials. May God Bless you and forgive you all for the atrocities YOU are emitting in these posts.

The one failed understanding here is that Christians have a right to pray to what God they want to pray to and so does others, but just as Christians don’t want to be imposed upon, neither do others!

@Progressive Humanist
First, you did not answer my question as to why you use the adjective “progressive” rather than just “Humanist”. Again, why?

You say there is no mystery to death. Why does life end in the first place? You only mention the death of the body; what of the mind? Where do thoughts go? Your view is that man is a mere machine that is turned on then off. Therefore, in your world view, life has no “meaning”. It just is. You use the term “immoral charlatans”. This implies that you hold to some set of morals, WHICH IS IN CONTRADICTION TO YOUR STATED WORLD VIEW. If we just live, then die, THEN ALL ACTIONS OF INDIVIDUALS ARE EQUAL. There is nothing to compare one’s actions to as being “good or bad” because YOU HAVE NO STANDARD! I find it totally inconsistent with your stated world view that you waste time on this blog writing your opinion. It doesn’t matter because ALL views are equal! Why would you insult others who believe differently? By doing this, YOU CONTRADICT YOUR OWN STATED BELIEFS! If others want to believe something YOU KNOW isn’t true, THEN WHAT’S IT TO YOU? Your life has no meaning. Only a fool would try to give it one.

You said:
“Moderation- If you think there’s a mystery to death then you have the mind of a 3rd grader (which is why it’s so easy for immoral charlatans, usually their parents, to brainwash them into religious belief). There’s absolutely no mystery. The heart stops pumping, blood stops flowing, the brain and all other organs cease functioning. The lights go off and that’s it. That’s what the evidence says. If you believe otherwise then you’re just wishing there was something else because you’re scared to not be here any more and you’re delusional, “believing” in something you know isn’t true- an eternal afterlife with a magical primate up in a cloud somewhere. Conquer your fears and delusions and accept reality. Your life will be more meaningful if it’s not based on fiction.”

@liberalefty

I’m glad you brought up the issue of slavery. It has been common to most people groups. All the ancient civilizations practiced it, including Pagans. You might want to read “The Confessions of St. Patrick”. At age 16, he and many over youths were kidnapped from Roman Briton and sold into slavery to the Pagans of northern Ireland. Interestingly, he claims that this was the work of God, and it was through his enslavement and suffering that he saw his own sin nature and repented, becoming a follower of Jesus Christ. He claims that he miraculously was enabled to escape and return to his home in Briton. His parents were already confessing Christians, and welcomed him into the Church where he became a leader. Later, he claims God called him to return to Ireland and preach the Gospel to his former Pagan captives. Many on the island were converted tho Christianity as a result of his ministry.

Read the actual document here:
http://www.confessio.ie/etexts/confessio_english#01

Also, have you purchased something made in China? Why do you think their goods were so cheap that they could flood the U.S. market and destroy our manufacturing base? Yep, slave labor. Read all about it in THE BLACK BOOK OF COMMUNISM. Stalin set up slave labor camps called “Gulags”. Most of the slaves were Orthodox Christians who opposed Communism. Were you aware that the Pentagon uses U.S. prison slave labor in manufacturing high-tech electronic components for Patriot Advanced Capability 3 missiles, launchers for TOW (Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided) anti-tank missiles, and other guided missile systems?

Moderation- Why is the word “Truth” in your moniker? I’ve never seen an once of truth in anything you’ve written.

Again, you pose 3rd grade questions that we already know the answer to. Why does life end in the first place? You really don’t know the answer to this? I’ve already explained that.

Where do thoughts go? How exactly do you think thoughts would be generated if the brain ceases to function? If the brain is no longer functioning there are no more thoughts. I think you need to go back and retake psychology 101.

And of course, you fall back on the old silly argument that life could have no meaning or purpose and there’s no morality without a god. That’s utter rubbish and shows how limited your thinking is. Research had been conducted recently that showed that religious believers are no more moral in their choices than non-religious believers and in fact were sometimes less so. The researchers posed questions with ethical dilemmas to people such as “If you knew three people were about to be killed in an accident, and you could do something to avert the accident, but in doing so a innocent person may be killed, what would you do?” There were no differences in the moral judgment between the two groups, and when there were the non-believers generally gave what we would consider to be the more ethical responses.

I would say that it is your life that has no meaning because you base it on fiction and falsehoods. My life is based on real things- my wife, my family, my work, helping to educate others so that tomorrow’s generation will not fall into the kind of ignorance your ilk displays, etc.

And I’m no moral relativist. I look down upon Christian, Muslim, Jewish beliefs because 1) they are falsehoods, and 2) I find their “holy” texts to be immoral in that their “gods” give advice on such actions as the “correct” way to conduct slavery, murdering your children and neighbors, and in general preach hate and division. I see Islam and Christianity in particular as being violent and a plague on humanity.

The idea that there are no standards outside of Christianity and religion is just as foolish. Most of the Christian commandments that have become actual laws (no murdering, stealing, etc.) are restrictions that every human society, whether religious or not, has settled upon. They are the most basic rules that all civilizations and cultures have followed. Christianity did not invent morality; it just took societal rules that had been in place for thousands of years and codified them once again, just like early Judeo-Christians took various myths from around the Middle East, Asia, and India, rehashed them, and cobbled them together to form Judaism and Christianity.

My standards are based on real human progress, and I believe that those who think like yourself are the greatest impediment to that progress and to this nation. You peddle falsehoods and lies and rationalize the information from the real world to fit your immoral fantasy, which is religion.

If so, then you are using a comparative adjective. If mankind is getting “better”, then what is your definition of “best? How do you know it is best? Is it true or is it just your opinion? How can your standard for judging others be those same individuals, many of whom you berate and look down upon?
Your stated beliefs are irrational!

I cannot get over the venom coming from supposed ‘christians’ For people who claim to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ you are awfully critical of everyone who doesn’t believe the way you do. To equate non-christians with “liberals” (in the derogatory), ne’er do wells, savages and faithless is to do a disservice to the true teachings of Jesus. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. I see an awful lot of stone casting going on from the ‘christian’ contingent here.

Some of you really need to go back and look at the LAW. There is a separation of church and state for a reason. It has nothing to do with belief or non-belief of any religion/deity. It has everything to do with having to leave England *because* of religious intolerance.

Maybe the more intolerable of you should actually learn to be more, you know, tolerant of other people and their beliefs or lack thereof. The world would be a much nice place, don’t you think?

This is a blog. This is where individuals come to debate. It is a given that many will not agree on any issue, much less religious views. I am prepared to give an account for my faith, and I am not the least offended when others test it, AS THEY SHOULD! Most, I have found, are merely ignorant of what the Bible says because they have not read it or studied THE WHOLE BOOK. I see it as my duty to make those corrections. Now, once they know what it says, it is their free will choice to believe the Gospel or reject it. When others claim a different belief, I expect them to be able to defend it in the same way. If they can’t, then I conclude that their so-called faith is actually pretty weak. But again, they have the freedom to believe what they want.
