You’re invited: AJC roundtable on education on Nov. 3

From the AJC editor Kevin Riley to readers:

I’m hosting my first Editor’s Roundtable the evening of Thursday, Nov. 3, at the AJC’s office near Perimeter Mall. The topic will be education and teacher quality. I want to take you beyond the headlines and share what the AJC’s education team has learned about the state of teacher quality in Georgia. This event will include a panel discussion with parents, educators and school advocates and time for questions.

There will be open house with our education team, and light refreshments at 6:30 p.m. The roundtable discussion will go from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

I hope you can join me at this event to learn more about what parents can do to ensure their students are getting quality teaching. Space is limited, so please RSVP here - and continue reading the AJC for our ongoing series on teacher quality.

@Tony.
Three teachers who won the Milken awards. (Fulton, APS and Gwinnett.)
The current Georgia Teacher of the Year. (Bibb)
A school administrator who has his own ed blog. (Decatur.)
I had suggested the teachers including several others from the blog who could not do it on that night.
Should be a great panel. I will post the panelists’ names, but cannot get into my files now because we are having system problems.
Also, a reader had a problem with the RSVP link. If you want to come, please try this link. (I can’t get into the blog entry to correct.)

Well, one college that I believe is preparing teachers in how to include parents is GA College and State University. Three of its teacher students presented at the 45th annual GAYC conference on last Friday. For the college to prepare students in understanding the parent’s role in fostering learning experiences was different than most colleges.

Sounds interesting…if my schedule is free I might see if I can get down there by then. Either way I look forward to hearing what was said.

Sorry for the double post, but where exactly does this event occur? I looked up Perimiter Mall, but when I searched for the AJC’s offices they were in the middle of downtown, not near the mall. Has someone been there before and can give me some idea? If it’s downtown I’ll never make it in time. :-(

@Mike, We have moved from our downtown location to a building behind the MARTA station at Perimeter Mall.
223 Perimeter Center Pkwy.
Atlanta, GA 30346

And we have parking, but the train is literally across the street.

Why not include Dr. Trotter on the panel? Has the credentials, and certainly has earned some education spurs; was years ahead of the curve on systemic cheating, years ahead of the curve on the systemic dysfunction of APS and DCSS and has been years ahead of the curve on the subject of administrative abuse of the evaluation process.

I am assuming this panel is looking for an honest and open debate on ALL factors relating to education and teacher quality, and not just a watered-down politically correct version of the problem.

With so much talk of “unions” being “the problem” wouldn’t Dr. Trotter be an ideal panelist to address the dynamic of protecting the rights of effective teachers who have had their rights denied vs cases were ineffective teachers had to be guided to either improve or be removed?

Seems a legitimate, even vital issue that needs to be addressed; is there anyone currently on the panel more qualified to address that aspect of teacher quality?

Wish I could make the 2 hour/100 mile trip, unfortunately, that won’t be possible on a work night. I look forward to reading about the event.

Dr. Trotter should be on the panel – if you want a great panel.

Notice (without meaning ANY disrespect to the panelists) a common theme among them. They are all “approved” for lack of a better term, by the educational-industrial complex. If you want TRUE intellectual discourse (instead of weakly claiming an administrator along with teachers is diverse) why not include alternative voices?

Isn’t it telling a representative from the AJC (I’m sure Maureen would give the person who set this up permission to post on this blog) won’t come explain the reasons behind the particular make-up of the panel.

Wow. Just who we need guidance and advice from, three “Milken Award” winners. Perhaps some of the readers are too young to remember just who Michael Milken is. His past actions on Wall Street are an example of the reasons our youth and other citizens are participating in “Occupy Wall Street” today. In his own words, “What I did violated not just the law but all of my principles and values and I will regret it for the rest of my life. I am truly sorry.” Milken served a 10 year prison term after having “…pleaded guilty in April to six counts of conspiracy and fraud related to illegal securities trading after denying a much broader array of accusations.” Please read the L.A. Times article for all the shameful details. I guess it is no coincidence that he decided to honor government school teachers with his ill- gotten gains. LOL!

Before we think being a Milken award AUTOMATICALLY conveys credibility, let’s not forget none other than Crawford Lewis of DeKalb County fame is a past winner.

Who would you prefer to give an honest assessment of teacher quality; “Milken Award winner” Crawford Lewis, or Dr. Trotter?

Can the AJC have a serious discussion on “teacher quality” without discussing the good teachers who have been retaliated against for taking a stand? Is there anyone more qualified than Dr. Trotter to speak to that particular aspect?

Are these not legitimate questions to ask of the AJC? And isn’t it telling, that no one from the AJC will respond?

If no one from the AJC is willing to respond, is it not fair to ask if this is really a free and open “roundtable” or really more of a propaganda push, more worthy of Fox News?

The unwillingness to answer fair and legitimate questions indicates an “agenda” so transparent that I surprised the AJC hasn’t asked Saran Wrap to sponsor it.

Will audience members even be allowed to ask questions or comment?

I’ve never known dr. Trotter to add anything constructive to a conversation on education. No one in their right mind would invite him to be part of any panel on education. He represents who and what is wrong with public education In this city.
