High school students staged a mock graduation at the UGA arch Tuesday to protest state policy toward students who are here illegally. (AJC file)
High school students staged a mock graduation today at the University of Georgia arch to protest the state policy’s of documenting citizenship of students. Chanting “undocumented, unafraid,” the students expressed dismay at the policy, which they said will lock them out of UGA and other prestigious campuses.
Illegal immigration became a volatile issue in Georgia after it was discovered that Kennesaw State University charged an illegal immigrant in-state tuition in violation of state law. Now, illegal immigrants are barred from any University System of Georgia campus that turned away academically qualified students for the past two years. (The impacted campuses are UGA, Georgia Tech, Georgia State University, Georgia College & State University and the Medical College of Georgia.)
The State Board of Regents adopted the policy last fall after months of angry debate and legislative posturing over assertions that these students stole spots from those legally here. While officials said campuses are not overwhelmed by thousands of illegal immigrants, the regents adopted the policy to placate legislators and reassure taxpayers that illegal students weren’t taking spots. Those students may attend the system’s other 30 colleges, but must pay out-of-state tuition, which is about three times as expensive.
The AJC reported last week that only one out of the more than 10,000 students granted preliminary acceptance to those five coveted campuses was barred from enrolling because the student is an illegal immigrant. It’s not clear whether illegal immigrants aren’t applying because of the new policy or whether they weren’t attending in the first place.
But the policy has sparked frustration and disappointment in students who have lived in this country most of their lives, but whose parents are not legal citizens. And what’s led to the protest Tuesday in Athens.
According to an account of the protest by the Associated Press:
About 25 young people, most wearing graduation caps and gowns, paraded across a busy intersection in Athens Tuesday and onto the University of Georgia campus to protest a new university system policy on the admission of illegal immigrants.
Several dozen supporters chanted and cheered as the protesters, many of them high school students, walked through the arch onto the university’s main quad, receiving fake diplomas in a mock graduation. Addressing their supporters and the media, a number of them publicly declared their illegal status.
“I want the education after high school because I don’t want to end up a deadbeat,” said 15-year-old Alejandro Galeana. “They’re taking away the education that we have a right to.”
The sophomore at Cedar Shoals High School in Athens was brought to the U.S. from Mexico when he was 2. He doesn’t think it’s fair that if he works hard enough to get the grades to qualify to go to one of the state’s top schools that he should be denied admission because of his immigration status.

I cant wait for the crowd that thinks I should feel sorry for the illegals to weigh in on this one. I don’t and never will feel sorry for them even if it isn’t the kids fault. Go through the process like many did before you and then you can reap the rewards that come with citizenship. The fact that the 15 year old thinks he has “rights” shows what the main problem is. He thinks he’s entitled to something he hasn’t earned. Then again, many of today’s kids feel entitled to everything without actual merit, but that’s a different story.

Why do some folks feel like they have been disadvantaged when they are not successful in coercing taxpayers in giving into their demands for ‘A LOT FOR NOTHING FROM THEM’? Their ideas DEFY LOGCI! Whether it be an illegal (just find the term in the context we are speaking unreal) immigrant, or a minority that feels they were disadvantaged growing up, what gives them the right to come to my pocket and DEMAND RESOURCES TO DO what I may have worked for; saved for; sacrificed for; and probably along the way, may a heck of a lot different life decisions? Have they become that DEPENDENT ON THE GOVERNMENT? If so, then this period should be a serious wake up call for them to PREPARE THEMSELVES FOR THE FUTURE, and LEARN TO STAND ON THEIR OWN TWO FEET. By the way, college is not for everyone.

Mr. Galeana has no rights. He is not a citizen and evidently neither are his parents. Become a citizen – legally – then you have rights. Until then, you are a guest of the US people. We cannot afford to send non-citizens to college. Also, please do not direct your anger at us. Redirect your anger where it belongs, your parents who obviously came here illegally and made you an accessory.

It is amazing how folks whose ancestors stole, murdered, cheated and tried to exterminate people already living on a land which they deemed they discovered, now feel as if they have a God given right to reject others. I assume they do understand they are slowly but surely becoming a minority. What are they going to do about that. Start using the same tactics are their ancestors did.

This is neither a pro-illegal or anti-illegal comment but I am echoing @catlady’s comment. Some accommodation should be reachable for kids who want to be here and want to strive for the highest level of success possible. I see too many “eligible” kids who milk their parents for all they can and either drop out due to lack of performance or end up on the 6 year plan while they are still trying to find themselves. Bottom line is that there should be a way for minor children of illegal immigrants to be fast tracked for citizenship with a sponsor family assigned to them.

Neither this kid who THINKS he deserves special “rights” because his parents broke the law, nor any other illegal alien deserves a darn thing from this nation except to be catapulted back across the border. I am so tired of hearing the whine that we can’t punish these kids for their parents’ bad choices. PLENTY of American kids pay for the bad choices of their parents every single day and always have. How many of THEM march in the streets crying like little babies? I have never seen a protest by the children of AMERICAN criminals.
For those of you who think they deserve a chance at citizenship and an education in one of the colleges OUR tax money pays for…you DO realize they will then sponsor their criminal parents, not to mention loads of their other relatives, to become legal blood suckers, don’t you?
Also, have you not noticed how many of these kids major in law or politics in colleges paid for by Americans? What the heck do you think they’re going to do with those degrees except infiltrate our courts and government and change this nation to the point it will be the same third world toilet they crawled out of? Many of them have sworn to do so and if America doesn’t wake up and stop falling for the nonsense they are up to, that’s just what they’ll do.
Do you want to leave a better America for YOUR children or not? Charity begins at home.

Children have always had to deal with and overcome their parents’ questionable choices. As an educator, as a parent, as a community member, I applaud any child who works hard and tries to succeed academically.
I work hard, I pay taxes, and I want t those taxes to be well spent. It hurts my heart when I see children throwing away their education, and maybe throwing away their lives by making bad choices.
But initially, children are not living in poverty because of their choices; they are not in foster care because of their choices; they are not being brought up by extended family members because of their choices; they are not here illegally because of their choices.
We have many support systems for children who struggle with life obstacles. Some come from private organizations, some are faith based, some are government based, but the goal is the same: to help children. I believe every child deserves a chance.
Right now our immigration system is a mess. I’ve heard (and I’m still learning) that the only answer for children who may have been brought here at the age of 1 or 2 is to go to their “home” country, and then apply for citizenship. I can only imagine if I were born abroad, moved to the US at the age of 2, and then when I became 18, was sent back to fend for myself, in a country I didn’t know – a country that was not my home. And then I had to wait, and wait, and wait….to possibly come back to the only home I’d ever known.
No easy answer here, but I do wish people could share their thoughts respectfully, and from the heart.

“d” started it off right with his comments. This is what is wrong with America, not right. We have become so soft that we accommodate those who feel they are the most entitled, so entitled that they do not have to follow rules and laws put in place so that they ultimately benefit the immigrant. The bottom line is those who become legal are those are those that should be lauded and those that don’t are just using and abusing the system. They are not victims, they are victimizers and non-assimilaters, and “entitlement” demanders.

For those on this board and elsewhere who constantly complain that the illegals in this country should just go through some process to be here legally, how exactly, pray tell, do you propose they do this? What forms should they fill out, or what process or procedure should they follow? The answer is that for blue collar laborers, the vast majority of illegals, there is no legal option or avenue to pursue. None.

Once again, one must ponder the big question…”just exactly what is the point of discussion here”? This is not a question of race, nor of the social injustices hundreds of years ago. If we want to fish, hunt, drive, fly airplanes, etc…WE GO THROUGH A LAWFUL PROCESS. If we want to visit/live in another country, WE GO THROUGH A LAWFUL PROCESS. Failure to subject ourselves to a SPECIFIC lawful process while continuing to fish, hunt, drive, fly airplanes, visit/live in other countries, etc is (drumroll)…(like it or not)…BREAKING THE FRIQUIN LAW!
So, once again, without benefit of the violin strings in concert with the (so-called) downtrodden; without yet another review of the tired ole mindless “they drug my ancestors here in chains” arguement; without imagined rights to an education despite ILLEGAL status…

Old Guy,
You’re suddenly interested in the law? How convenient. You weren’t interested in the law until the LEGAL citizens of this country ruined the economy and you needed someone to blame. People throw out this high and mighty law argument when the people who really break the law and really do severe damage to the economy walk or cash out or gently fall back to earth with thick wallets and golden parachutes. Fight the real enemy. Regulate wall street. Get the lobbyists out of our inept politicians purses and leave the newest residents of this country alone. And here’s some violins for you. Were you interested in laws when this state was robbed from its previous legal residents. Were you interested in laws when free blacks were arrested on trumped up charges and worked to death in prison camps. Where were the law loving residents of this state while they were stringing up Leo Frank from a tree. If people like yourself love the law so much they should have defended minority rights with the same zeal they seek to deport Hispanics. But it was convenient to sit back and let evil prevail while we ascended the socioeconomic ladder wasn’t it. So go back and cling to your laws now that the deck is stacked in your favor. You wouldn’t want anyone else to threaten the status we so legally have attained through the years.

Talking about the mistakes of parents, it is clear that people in this state hate beyond comprehension. It is clear that it was all passed onto you from generation after generation.
what part of the demands of those illegal students actually asks for tax payers money??? they are asking for ACCESS TO EDUCATION, so they do not end up uneducated like most ppl in this state. They are willing to pay OUT OF STATE TUITION 3X HIGHER meaning their tuition does not get any tax payers subsidies (just like the one paid by international students).
Now from the tax payers perspective even if I dislike those undocumented Americans (who do not know another homeland and who in many cases speak English better than their parents language),it makes total sense to grant these young boys and girls access to higher education, and a path to legality.
remember since WE THE TAX PAYERS have already poured millions of dollars on these kids education (elementary, middle, and high school), let them stay here to become useful elements of society. let them repay this country all the resources already invested in them. why hatred blinds us from seeing what truly is the best benefit for the society. stop being for once the incarnation of your parents mistakes and stop hating for God’s sake.

What a bunch of self righteous jerks commenting on this thread. People implying that they “earned” their citizenship by being born here. Or claiming that a 15 year old has the ability to apply for citizenship by himself. Believing that it’s as easy as walking into an immigration office and asking for citizenship. This 2 year old kid has basically lived in the US his entire life. His first language is most likely English (i’m sure at 2 years old English was the first language he learned). The only people i see here who believe they are entitled to anything are the US citizens claiming that they and only they are allowed an education. And then as soon as you block these kids from an education, you start complaining about how immigrants are causing crime. Maybe it’s because you didn’t allow them to have an education? @Mike, my ancestors were native Americans and of European descent. With that said, I feel entitled to weigh in given my Native American (Eastern U.S. tribe). I agree with ‘d.’ These kids are not entitled to anything. Our (U.S.) priority goes to U.S. citizens. Full stop. Second, illegal immigrants need to follow the law and immigration process. If they do not, we need to open the borders and process to those are following the process legally from outside or inside the U.S. Thus, 3/4 of Mexico’s population will shortly be crossing the border, 1/4 of China’s population will be crossing the border, and it goes on. Last, given limited resources due to budget chronic short-fall, unprecedented deficits that threaten the economic health of this country long-term (for 40 years of longer – that is truly long-term), and high unemployment, the outrageous and insulting demands of illegal immigrants who are effectively claiming “squatter rights” in this country is insulting. These children need to return to their country of origin and fight for change there and/or immigrant legally. The children have been afforded a FREE and quality education at the expense of U.S. taxpayers. One more thing, given that President Obama will not listen to the will of the American people, a constitutional amendment needs to be implemented to change birthright citizenship. This is drastic but it is time to decisively end discussion about on this issue.

“enlightened” people who support open borders need to spend about a month in socal. “progressives” thought it was a good idea to allow millions of undocumented and uneducated mexicans into california while it boomed. They did this to help california businesses have access to cheap unskilled labor. But what they didn’t bank on is that the cost to california taxpayers in the form of welfare, foodstamps, hospital bills, roads, other massive infrastructure expenses and schooling far outweighs the benefits of the below minimum wage labor that they offer. Also they just didn’t bank on such a massive and still uncounted influx of people. They also didn’t expect so many white people to flee california to get away from cities that are quickly being transformed into 3rd world holes with millions of poor angry uneducated mexican people who believe that california is rightfully their land. They openly hate white people and they are transforming california into mexico – the stupid backwards and corrupt crime riddled country that they came from. Also what these political morons didn’t consider is that such a massive ethnic shift in california’s population is increasing the chances that the us is going to be balkanized – with different parts of the country divided along ethnic lines – eventually breaking apart as the unifying force that makes us all Americans is dissolved.

President Obama has spoken on the undocumented immigrant policy of the US. Young people who are brought here as small children should be considered in state residents. These young people deserve the chance to improve their lives with education.
The very wise decision of President Obama will give peace to the law abiding residents who have done nothing wrong. If the system was drastically streamlined and made very affordable for “the huddled masses” to come here legally, these economic refugees would be able to live and work without the fear of deportation.

the supreme court said a long time ago all children should have a public education (i guess that means a right). it was a case deciding if free public education should include illegals. and the answer was yes. i’m not convinced that ruling applies here to higher education.
the student raises a good point about educational attainment and higher earnings. i feel for him on that point. but the student didnt’ mention what he (or hisfamily) hasdone to obtain legal immigration status for all these years. we all know the consequences and it’s almost as though he and others are flaunting the law.
i object to instate status for tuition for undocumented students. schools charge out of state plus surcharge to foreign students on proper visas. it’s not fair to those who went through the process and hoops to get legal status and/or visas and don’t get these perks.
good luck to all parties. it’s not an easy solution.

Obama and the Democrats are now releasing illegal aliens who have not committed felonies. They should be deported and take their children with them to their home countries! We now have an open borders immigration policy.
We are sick and tired of supporting illegal aliens here in the US. They cost the state of Georgia more than $1 Billion each year for the cost of K-12 educations. Allowing the children of illegal aliens to even attend colleges and universities in Georgia only rewards their parents and will remain a magnet drawing illegal aliens into the US and Georgia specifically.

Personally, I am 100% in support of the DREAM Act which would allow these students the opportunity to become citizens if they prove their commitment to making America a better place through bettering themselves. I’m in my 7th year in education and I will say that the immigrant students I have taught (legal or otherwise) seem to value their education much more than many of their American peers. It may be the entitlement mentality that many of our students have grown up with – probably is – but I think that these students know exactly what the American dream is and they want to be a part of it. They are the innocent victims in this, and if they show they’re willing to be a positive force in our society, why not give them a chance?

Conservatives make much of how costly illegal aliens are, but when it comes to regulating banks and other quasi-financial institutions–you know, the ones that had a big role in tanking our economy back in 2008–they don’t seem to be quite so interested in the bottom line. Funny how that works.

The reality is that we just cannot afford to educate, feed, provide health care and so on for our own citizens. As much as I want to help everyone I simply cannot afford it. We as a nation cannot afford the tremendous expense. The deficit is overwhelming and our jobs are now overseas.
As much as my heart goes out to any young person who has lived here all of their lives and wants an education, I simply cannot afford to educate you.

I agree with Mom of 3 – I have a daughter at UGA who was wait-listed despite having a great GPA, high SAT scores, and lots of extra-curricular activities. If she had not eventually been accepted and I found out an illegal immigrant had been accepted instead, I would have been VERY angry. While I support some reform in the immigration process, until then we need to enforce the laws we have. Those children are the byproducts of our failure to enforce the law 18 years ago.

I believe that a lot of the anti-immigration remarks are from people that like the ability to be openly racist, without there being repercussions. Racism is alive and well in the South, just more people keep their thoughts to themselves. This topic allows them to follow the crowd and spew hate.
All these people that talk about illegals needing to go through the process are obviously completely ignorant of US immigration law: There is no way that a ‘normal’ person can apply for a green card. There is no provision in the law at all. And once someone has been illegal here for any length of time they will be banned for 5-10 years. So, there is absolutely no option.
I seriously doubt that those haters would ‘go back to Mexico’ themselves, if they had been brought here as a child and didn’t know anyone there. It’s always easy to be a hypocrite.

An illegal immigrant, which this boy is, has NO right to an education beyond high school. The fact that we educate all children in public education and do not check for citizenship is an enormous advantage that he has had over the children in his home country. Logically speaking and especially with the economy the way it is now, we CANNOT take in all the third world’s children. We have to have an enforceable border policy. The people who sneak in put an extraordinary strain on all public services; we cannot afford it. We have to get this under control. Each individual story is compelling, but so are the stories of all the families in the third world.

In these types of “illegal immigrant” discussions, one NEVER asks about the elephant in the room: WHY ARE MEXICANS FLEEING THEIR COUNTRY in the first place? Mexico has lots of OIL. The RICHEST PERSON IN THE WORLD, surpassing Bill Gates’ fortune in 2011, is Mexican. His name is Carlos Slim. Ever heard of him? Many Americans haven’t. It would be worth your time read the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Slim
Of particular interest is the following quote:
“The Mexican magnate’s growing fortune has caused a controversy because it has been amassed in a developing country where per capita income does not surpass $14,500 a year, and nearly 17% of the population lives in poverty.[21] Critics claim that Slim is a monopolist, pointing to Telmex’s control of 90% of the Mexican landline telephone market. Slim’s wealth is the equivalent of roughly 5% of Mexico’s annual economic output.[22] Telmex, of which 49.1% is owned by Slim and his family, charges among the highest usage fees in the world, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.[23]
According to Professor Celso Garrido, an economist at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Slim’s domination of Mexico’s conglomerates prevents the growth of smaller companies, resulting in a shortage of paying jobs and forcing many Mexicans to seek better lives north of the Rio Grande.[24]”
So why do American’s put up with this? Why isn’t this man’s wealth REDISTRIBUTED TO HIS OWN PEOPLE? Slim is actually of Lebanese descent. HIS FAMILY WERE IMMIGRANTS TO MEXICO! Granted, by all accounts Slim is a hard-working, intelligent man. Yet he has basically BOUGHT MEXICO! TELL THE VISITING MEXICAN CITIZENS TO GO HOME AND ASK SLIM FOR A HANDOUT! Of course, like all the super-rich, he has a “charitable” foundation. “In 1995 he established Fundación Telmex, a broad-ranging philanthropic foundation. This followed the creation of his eponymous non-profit philanthropic foundation, Fundación Carlos Slim Helú in 1986. In 2007 it was announced that the latter body had an asset base of $4 billion and that it would be establishing Carso Institutes for Health, Sports and Education. Furthermore, it was to work in support of an initiative of Bill Clinton to aid the people of Latin America.[2]”
HEY SLIM! Why don’t you pump an extra $20 BILLION into your FUNDACION CARLOS SLIM HELU and give full scholarships to your FELLOW MEXICAN CITIZENS LIVING NORTH OF THE RIO GRANDE?
WAKE UP AMERICANS! Aren’t you tired of getting FLEECED????????

Public Schools are welfare agencies
August 24th, 2011
8:17 am
Public schools have become welfare agencies and illegal immigration substations. I am so sick and tired of taxpayers footing the bills for terrible parents and illegals. Many of the students on so-called “free lunch” receive SNAP services. Their parents should feed them breakfast and lunch at home. Aren’t they getting funds for this? If they cannot feed them at home, then allotments need to be decreased during the school year. These neglectful parents don’t believe that they are responsible for anything as it pertains to their children. Their childrens’ failures are blamed on teachers, and the government enables these terrible parents by enacting policies and procedures to protect them. As far as non-English speaking students are concerned, federal dollars should not be spent on ILLEGAL children who do not have command of the English language. This is the biggest abuse of taxpayers dollars in the school system. Why is it mandatory for teachers in Georgia to have an ESOL endorsement? No other country forces its teachers to spend their time learning how to teach illegal children. Georgia has placed several unrealistic demands on teachers, but there has been no pay increase. Sounds backward… doesn’t it? Parents in the inner city and illegal immigrants need to step up to the plate and do what they need to do. As long as Georgia continues on this path, this state will retain its place as number 50 in job creation. Teachers will relocate to other states to work. Sen. Chip Rogers and the Republican leadership please do something about this problems

A child brought into this country by illegal parents should have done what most American taxpaying citizens did, SAVE to pay for their child’s college education. In that time period, well over 15 years, these parents also had the opportunity to apply for citizenship.
The intent is obvious. Illegal aliens are TAUGHT how to cheat the system and have are raising children that have done the same. Criminals raising criminals.
American born children have been witness to the taking, they are not stupid. A 16 year old child said to me not long ago … “illegals have gotten away with breaking the laws, why can’t we”? That is the point I knew that the entitlement disease brought here has infected this country. Those lazy American citizens you speak of have become this way for a reason.
The tide is growing and more and more states (not just in the South) are realizing something has to be done to curtail the disease and decay that is illegal immigration. It has damaged our entire country – our healthcare system, our public schools, our welfare programs. Illegal aliens bought homes with exotic mortgages. The federal government is not telling you the whole truth, but at least the states are finally standing up for the citizens that are demanding radical change.
This is not a Southern thing, many of my friends and relatives that don’t have to deal with this illegal on a daily basis have finally seen the light. Blacks like myself and LEGAL immigrants are rising in numbers against this illegal entitlement.
We bought their story of sorrow – hook, line and sinker! We can no longer afford to be polically correct or compassionate. We have been taken advantage of and they continue to want more. The land of the “Free For All” – that is America today. Our country will continue to spiral downhill if we allow the entitlement disease continue. Our nation cannot survive with major change to our immigration policies!

We have to draw a line somewhere. Unfortunately, bad things happen in life. That’s a reality. Georgia cannot afford to pay the way to educate folks that have no way of contributing to our tax base once they graduate. If they are here illegaly how are they going to find legitimate employment? Are we preparing them to go back to their home country with an American education, thus diminishing our global edge? Shouldn’t this be the responsibilty of their native land? Other countries have restrictions. We need to do the same.
Also, I wonder how many highly qualified engineering majors Georgia Tech had to turn away vs how many average Political Science or Psycholgy majors the other public colleges are dealing with.

They aren’t asking to be a part of this great country. They are asking to be granted entrance to Georgia’s most prestigious colleges. That’s more than being a part. That’s being entitled. They are allowed entrance to Georgia’s other 30 colleges.
My heart goes out to anyone who works and wants to succeed but the reality is that we cannot afford to feed, educate and provide health care and benefits to illegal aliens because we cannot even afford to do it for own own citizens.
If the situation were different and this was 1939 and a group of human beings were in fear for their very lives, as what happened in Nazi Germany to the Jews, then sure, I’d do whatever it took to save them from murder.
The situation here is the bulk of these illegal aliens are from Mexico. They don’t need amnesty as the Jews did in the earlier part of last century.
Illegal aliens cost tax paying Georgians millions and millions of dollars we cannot afford to pay. Many of these illegal aliens are planned. A nice term for it is “maternity tourism.” Mexicans plan to come here, become pregnant and create an “anchor baby” which ties them to the United States where they strain our already few resources.

THE ULTIMATE SOLUTION
It occurred to me after reading and posting about Carlos Slim, Mexican citizen and THE RICHEST MAN IN THE WORLD, that the ultimate solution to illegal Mexican immigration is staring us in the face. First, let’s look at our current military policy in the Middle East. All the countries we invade must have the following criteria: they have oil and other natural resources, they have a government leader who “oppresses” the people, they have lots of gold/cash in the bank. WELL, MEXICO FITS OUR MILITARY INVASION PROFILE TO A TEE! Obviously, the people are oppressed, as they must flee to America to earn a decent wage. Obviously they have LOTS of cash, as demonstrated by the huge Mexican drug cartels and the huge monopolistic empire of Carlos Slim. Obviously the government is CORRUPT, because it allows these people to operate with impunity. When a Mexican citizen crosses our border without proper papers, this should be considered an INVASION by Mexico. So why hasn’t our military invaded Mexico, like YESTERDAY? The cost would be minimal, since they are next door. WE WOULD LIBERATE THE OPPRESSED MEXICANS, and crush the drug cartel and MONOPOLIES, and the freed up money could provide for the NEW U.S. CITIZENS. We would have new Mexican oil reserves to keep our gas prices down. THIS IS A WIN-WIN for honest hard-working citizens. THERE WOULD BE NO MORE ILLEGAL ALIENS. They would all be hard working TAXPAYING U.S. citizens. PROBLEM SOLVED!

No, they aren’t. Not in my house and not in my office. I routinely get illegal aliens applying for nanny positions with me and they apply for landscaping positions. My answer is “show me your papers.”
I don’t hire illegal aliens at work and I sure won’t do it in my own home. I routinely seek out an employ college students to help me domestically as my children’s babysitter and when I need help around my home. I want my money to go to someone who is here legally and who is doing something wise with the money — getting an education.

The American people are getting a little fed up with illegal immigration and these demonstrations and demands. Illegal immigrants pay property taxes, Patriotic Mary. They also pay sales taxes. And, most of them pay income taxes (with a Tax ID number or fake SS number). I am hard pressed to figure out the claim that they don’t pay taxes. Many “Americans” work off the books, make money illegally (ie selling drugs) or make too little to owe income taxes, so we can’t claim it’s those illegal leaches doing this, without recognizing our own culpability.
However, I doubt too many pay estate taxes, so you’ve got me on that one. Of course, not so many “Americans” do, either.

AS our middle class shrinks with middle class jobs declinining from 52% in 1980 now down to 42% of all jobs in 2011 the tax base diminishes and the polarization grows between rich and poor. .
Corporations continue to outflow jobs see Cnn article and AJC article profiling Disney ,Caterpillar, Merck, Proctor and Gamble showing net jobs created in China in last 12 months and jobs in America
China 111,000 America 3000. Only Caterpillar has created postive jobs base here.
Just as our population now reflects ignorance and poverty (by the bulk of the blog entries) American companies have no more loyalty to the riff raff that now populates the bulk of public schools and growing population base. This group of illegal and uneducated do not care about Amercia and only pander to their “we deserve mentality” There will be no jobs for them based on current trends nor will there be many jobs except for the best students.
America has shifted from a balanced economic base of 200,000,000 perople in 1980 to 310,000,000 with a permanent underclass of 50-100 million in poverty some 2nd and 3rd generations 90% black and hispanic. The rioting looting and flash moms that have swept Europe will hit with a vengeance in America when the futility and political cave ins of the current weaklings in Washington are made obvious.

Illegals TAKE much more than they contribute

“Jobs that Americans refuse to do” does not equate to paying a signigficant portion of income taxes. These are the jobs and income levels that TAKE much more than they contribute to our society.
Same argument with public schools. Illegals (mostly) rent and the landlord pays property taxes. Typically these are homes that have the smallest amount of property taxes with multiple families or more children that the average living in said home. Again, they TAKE much more than they contribute.
Heathcare: Again, “the jobs that Americans won’t do” are low skilled jobs that often don’t offer health insurance. Who is paying for this? Fake documents can get you Peachcare, Medicaid, WIC.

Saying that illegals/undocumented people do not have the same rights as those that were born here, is not being racist. Go anywhere else in this world illegally and see if you are given the same rights as the citizens of that country. People who come here illegally do not have the same rights as the citizens of this country. In some areas of the country illegals are putting severe hardship on the resources for the citizens of the country.
The term racist is thrown around like a baseball at a baseball game. Racism/Racist are not terms that one should throw around so lightly.
All people need to realize that with rights come responsibility. Too many want the rights but not the responsibility.

My Grandparents immigrated from Romania in the early part of the 20th century. They were processed through Ellis Island in NYC. They settled in NYC and became citizens of the US. My Grandfather was a plumber and my grandmother cleaned houses to earn a living. They were productive citizens and loved their new country. Why is it so diificult for our present government to hold all immigrants to the same standard? There is a legal process that is already available to all who wish to come to this country. My grandparents never expected the gov’t to provide them with any financial support because they experienced gov’t control in Romania. They knew that you were never given something that did not requie something of you as an individual. Unfortunately, the freedom we have in our country is becoming a right not to be treasued or respected. We are allowing our most preciuos value to be flushed with the rising tide of the entitlement mentallity. I am saddened by the the lack of courage in our current leadership at all levels.

They’re taking away the education that we have a right to.”
As an “Illegal”, you have no rights in America.
New Law – If you are in the United States Of America “Illegally”, you have exactly six months from December 31, 2011 to remove yourself. You may take all your family, your belongings and any monies that you have acquired (as as illegal person, all monies would have been acquired illegally) with you. If you are here illegally after June 30, 2012 and are caught and found to be here illegally, you will be taken immediately to a detention facility and put on whatever mode of transportation is required to get you back to your home country. All your belongings will be confiscated (vehicles, money, personal possessions, etc) except for the clothes you are wearing. You will not be given the chance to make a phone call or to contact anyone. You will be DEPORTED, period…….
We realize that the above policy will cause a few inconveniences, such as airports being full, all roads south being clogged for a long period of time and the border crossing facilities being backed up for weeks, maybe longer, but it will have the desired effect of less crimes being committed, smaller classroom size, hospital emergency rooms being cleared up and other infrastructure facilities (jails, prisons, etc) being freed up. It will also help lower the unemployment rate in our country and also the entitlement programs should begin to show a slowdown. If you plan trips to Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, California during Jan. thru June, 2012, please expect delays if you are driving. Thank you for your cooperation.

If we remove these well qualified “illegals,” replacements are those students who were on the border line, much less qualified, with much better chance of not being able to complete colleges. If my kids cannot compete with these kids who come from disadvantage background for a spot in GT/UGA, my kids do not deserve to be in these schools. Just because my kids were born in this country does not entitle them to a great university with mediocre credentials.
I hope people who are against entitlement will re-think their opposition to giving a well-qualified student, regardless of their legal status, a well-served spot in our top public universities.

The problem I have with illegal-immigration is one I’m sure lots of American citizen have….the feeling they are entitled to everything their fellow countrymen did the right way. How is that a person who came here 20 or 30 years ago cannot speak English or attain citizenship? The government has allow this to happen. Where ever there is a sign or posting in English its also in Spanish, when you use auto-mated teller they give you directions in Spanish, never Russian, never Mandarin, never Arabic or French, just Spanish.. even recipes on food items are offered in Spanish. We as a country tend to forget our Asian and European counterparts who struggle to come to this country legally. Yes I’m sure there are many who have cross the border illegally, but they don’t seem to have thaat sense of entitlement. Shouldn’t this 15 year-old be concern more about his parents not being citizen and less about Georgia Universities and the rules they have enacted. You have a right to a K-12 education, your parents have a right to social benefits like welfare and wic, although some would say you don’t. You may think you have a right to a college education but what have you done to prove that. If you chose to pay out of state tuition I think you should be happy with that. It is not in the best interest of this state or country to put American college students second or fill the slot with an illegal. The citizens of the U.S. won’t tolerant it. @Note…I really don’t know of any other country that does more for people who aren’t citizen of the U.S.

Dear Note: I can name another country – England…and it’s practically a third world country. Canada, however, is strict with immigration. Their debt is zero. Their educational system is not overburdened either. Their healthcare free to citizens. Perhaps the U.S. could take a lesson or two from their neighbors to the north! The only lesson we get from our neighbors to the south is lawlessness.
I moved to the U.S. years ago and saw for myself how Hispanics/Latinos get the freebies at the INS office in L.A. Free interpreters, free legal representation, free filings. So, the people who are preaching about how unfair the system is…give me a break!! I was sworn in as a citizen in 2002, and have never looked back. I am a California credentialed teacher and work in a school district where migrant, undocumented workers milk the system for every dime they can. Free breakfast, free lunch, free afterschool daycare, free education. While, it’s true that it is not the kids’ fault, what this sense of entitlement breeds is generation after generation of handouts.
Cradle to grave socialism never gets a society anywhere, and that is exactly what these students are looking for. Sure, there are a few that want a college education. That’s the dream, but why should my children (the children of two working parents who came from low income homes, but saved every dime we had to buy our first home and educate ourselves…because there was NO money for college in the home we grew up in…) have to sacrifice? How is that fair? Wake up America!! Your country is being hijaacked by politicians who strive for the Latino vote.

The real story here is that our universities are having to devote huge amounts of staff time and financial resources to check the credentials of every university applicant. Since this very expensive and wasteful process has only turned up a few undocumented applicants, is this a worthwhile use of taxpayer funds and tuition dollars? Regardless of your politics, everyone should recognize that this is just wasteful and unnecessary.

Illegal supporters do realize these are a HANDFUL of protesters we are talking about. The reality of this particular situation is that there are very few illegals that are making the grades to attend these schools. Meanwhile, there are HUNDREDS of legal citizens that are denied admission that are equally or better qualified.
The legal citizens that are denied can go elsewhere, even throughout the country because they have more options. The illegals can’t leave GA due to lack of entitlements. So in essence, they are demanding placement that they probably could not get in the first place and now that the space is freed up it makes it look as if they are being denied based solely on immigration status.
Illegal advocates are loosing all of their arguments. One by one the arguments are being riddled with holes. This is another example and another grasp at straws, in a last ditch effort to convince Americans otherwise.
A growing number of Americans across the entire country are against illegal immigration and the states in which they live are demanding change, even if they haven’t been damaged by illegal immigration as we have here in GA.

@ Expensive Policy – I am not sure your statement is entirely true. When a student submits an application to a college, there is already an admissions staff that has to check the information provided and that is includes residency, ss number, grades, etc. It may take additional time, but in fairness to those US Citizens who are entitled to a fair shot at a slot in that school, I say it is money well spent.

Every day I hear about the rights of those from all over the world, especially Mexico and Asian countries, who have entered or stayed in this country illegally. It is funny that as we talk about this there are two Americans in jail in Iran for illegal entry. There are Americans jailed in Mexico for crossing their borders illegally or killed just for being in the country. We, Americans, have no rights when we place our foot on any foreign country’s soil whether legal or illegally. But, we as a country, with arms opened wide, will not enforce our own laws. I don’t agree with Obama and his overlooking the law. If you are not here legally, you should be deported. So where does this madness stop or when do foreigners understand that there are laws and you have to obey them? Whether by choice, with your parents or forced – there are laws. Americans must start to rebuild by joining forces with each other, severe the race and class lines and work together. If not, then those illegal foreigners that feel entitled are going to gain the right to vote (illegally) and boot us out laughing their butts off at how stupid we are. I know people who have lost jobs because employers would rather have cheap immigrant labor than hire citizens. Poster sldkfjslk is right, illegals’ are building the homes, bridges/buildings (state and federally funded projects), plucking chickens and picking crops but that is because legal citizens are not willing to accept low wages and continue to live impoverished. Deport the illegal immigrants, no matter where they are from, and the employers that hire them.
To the kids that feel that their ‘rights’ are being taken away; I can’t say that I am sorry. There is an established program for you to pursue higher education if you COMMIT yourself to America, The Dream Act. But, honestly, I doubt if you want to commit and truly try to make America better. Honestly, I agree with the post that you should blame your parents and they should be the ones trying to fix this not us. Even if it means going to a country, that most of you still embrace and support but know little about, and starting over. I have known foreign students that had to do that because they were brought here young and then told they had to go back and get a student visa and then return for a college education. It is the countries like Mexico (which you are still COMMITTED too) that make it hard on ‘you’ not America. As you have learned in your American government class, there are laws and now you have to live by them.

RE: language
There are plenty of US citizens (let alone “legal” aliens) who feel much more comfortable with languages other than English or even unable to communicate in English. There is no English test for citizens born in the US. Businesses provide Spanish support because their goal is to make money. By providing the service, they get more customers who speak that language.
RE: Dream Act
I think that is one of the most sensible legislation, but, of course, a bunch of right-wing republicans refuse to pass it. These students (at least some of them) were illegal because they were brought to this country by their parents. Yes, it’s their parents’ fault. But, what do we really lose by giving those students WHO QUALIFY opportunities to pursue higher education and become productive members of the society (who will contribute much more tax monies than many citizens who become welfare dependent)? Just as “zero tolerance” policy blindly applied is often nothing more than STUPID, “which part of ‘illegal aliens’ don’t you understand” blindly applied just as STUPID.

The nastiness and ignorance of so many of the comments here make me sick. Immigrants make a huge contribution to our society. To penalize good students for decisions made for them when they were too young to consent is nonsense. Of course these students should be able to access education, so they can further contribute to the state’s well-being. As for the young man quoted, I would be happy to deport any of the negative folks on this board to Mexico, away from the place they have known as home since age two, and see how they fare and how they like it. See how well Georgia agriculture is faring, as immigrant workers won’t enter the state to pick crops following the adoption of draconian laws. U.S. citizens won’t do it. The deal is, as for every group who has ever emigrated here, is that those who first arrive, work low-paying, degrading jobs–often more than one–live in cramped conditions, and skimp to make a better life for their children. If any of you had the gonads to use your real names here, then we could identify roughly when your forebears got here and who they were. Perhaps many of you don’t know about past discrimination against groups now comfortably settled here: look up NINA (No Irish Need Apply).

@catlady from good mother: The question wasn’t if the illegal immigrants “cost” us anything. The statement was that they don’t pay taxes. Folks repeat the same old saw over and over again and hope no one questions it.

@ catlady,
By closing the door for higher education, we perpetuate the cost. These students at our premiere institutions can obtain high-paying jobs, thus contributing much to the society, instead of being welfare dependent like so many of our fellow legal (lazy and unproductive) citizens are. THEY cost us just as much, if not more. Moreover, “illegals” pay at least the state sales tax. Given so many loopeholes for our rich fellow citizens, they might be paying just as much portions of their income as taxes…

At first, it was about money. However, now these people (translators) are providing a wealth of information in regards to the damage that has been done by illegal citizens. The deception is unimaginable. Illegals have bought homes and are now being foreclosed on. That money that was “made” is now lost! Why do you think their is a revolution sweeping the states to stop illegal immigration? Knowledge is power and the knowledge of the Spanish language is part of the down fall of illegal immigrants!
PS: The DREAM Act is just that – A DREAM. President Obama only has a few months left in office and the American public is demanding that he focus on the ECONOMY.

Paddy, while you are about right about my little home, there are only about 4 trailer parks in my county. Many of them are inhabited by aliens, illegal or not. Virtually none of them have bunches of men in them. IF you have a problem like this in your area, you should blame the (American) county for not having a mandatory limit on inhabitants in the trailers or the (American) folks who rent to them. And yes, these folks do pay property taxes. It is included in the rent. Your property taxes do not depend on how many people are living in the property–it could be one, it could be ten. The landlord divides the tax by 12 and charges it with the rest of the rent, and any other extras offered (trash pickup, or water, or yard care). So, you see, your gripe needs to be with the Americans who are permitting (and likely profiting from) this.

For those of you that think that an illegal immigrant can become legal, you are wrong. If they could, they would. The law was changed in April, 2002. Prior to that an illegal immigrant could find a sponsor, pay a fine, pass a health exam, pass a background check and then adjust status. George Bush changed the law. The law should be changed back.

______
You really believe that wanting people to respect the law is the same thing as hate? I don’t hate illegal immigrants, nor do the vast majority of people I come in contact with every day. We’re just tired of illegal immigrants demanding the same rights as citizens of this country. Like one of the writers said earlier, this 15-year-old kid came to this country illegally when he was two, which means his parents had thirteen years to gain legal status, and yet they did not. I don’t understand why some people on the other side of the argument think we should just welcome these illegals with open arms. If I came onto your property and set up a tent in the back yard, and then started using your power and your water, would you welcome me gladly or would you call the cops? Most sane, law-abiding citizens would call the cops because of someone trespassing on their land. I’m guessing those on the other side of the argument would invite the person in and give them their own room.

My mother is a German national who has resided in the USA since 1957. My father was a Korean War veteran and married her in 1959. In 2007, my mother’s father became gravely ill in Germany and my mother flew there to attend to him. He passed away a few months later and my mother needed to stay to probate his estate. Long story short, she was out of the country for 15 months. Upon her arrival at Hartsfield, she was summarily detained and put on the next plane to Germany. Two and a half years and over ten thousand dollars later, she finally was able to return to the States, just in time to see my father pass away the next week. She had filed a US tax return every year since 1957, including the year she was stuck in Germany, and had begged the US government to allow her to return due to my father’s kidney disease and need for dialysis.
Immigration laws cannot be subjectively enforced. They cannot force SOME to abide strictly to the laws and others to flaunt their breaking of those laws. It turns my stomach that my mother, who did everything right, was left on the tarmac, but these entitled imbeciles are shrieking about rights they haven’t earned or had the good fortune of being born into.

According to a 2010 cost study by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), the estimated annual total of the costs related to illegal immigration that taxpayers must bear on the federal, state and local levels in $113 BILLION. Of that, $84 BILLION at state and local levels. This breaks down to approximately $1,000 per tax-paying American household. An average 27 percent of this dollar figure has to do with the administration of justice, while 16 percent are public assistance expenditures. Twenty-one percent go to medical care and an estimated seven percent support education.

Americans took the USA from the British, who had taken much of it from the French, Spanish, and Dutch, who had taken it from the “native American” tribes who happened to be in control of their piece of it at the time, who had taken it from neighboring and preceding tribes, who had taken it from whoever was there before them, going back to those who first walked over from Asia and found it empty. So, we took some of it from Mexico and the western tribes…had none of them ever taken any land from weaker tribes or countries? No apologies.

I am sure many people will “love” me for this, but here goes. The whole Native/African/Irish/Mexican/Hispanic/Etc. American labels irritate me. I will continue to call individuals be whatever designation they wish to be courteous, but let’s not pretend that Native Americans have any more legitimate claim to America than the European whites that invaded. Our current Native American tribes were very brutal and warlike to each other and what about the cultures that were here before? Oh yeah, the Native Americans just “evolved” from these people, no conquest there. I am horrified at what the white settlers and US government did to the Native Americans. The atrocities perpetrated by men on other men are nothing new. I’m sure the roman Empire peacefully annexed the British Isles a thousand years ago. I am mostly English-Irish so do I get eat free at Olive Garden? At what point does the past become… the past? For the Cherokee, it is 1/8. I am only documented 1/16, so I can’t open a casino. As all teachers can see, kids pay for the choices of their parents all the time. That said, there should be some way for minor children of illegal immigrants to gain legality, without benefiting the parents that broke the law. I am not smart enough to know what that is. We are a nation of laws, at least for the commoners. Rich and powerful folks have always done what they want, when they want , how they want. occasionally, some rich, power broker does goes too far and gets smacked down. “Where did I say you are a racist? You should understand the difference between racism and xenophobia”
thomas, I understand the definition of xenophobia! It is the unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners or that which is different.
So to further clarify, I am not Xenophobic. I do not fear foreigners, in fact I welcome anyone would wishes to become a citizen of our country. I am not afraid of legal immmigrants, if so then I would move out my neighborhood and not socialize with them. I do not like illegal aliens, never have never will and I am not fearful of them.
The intent of an illegal alien that has been here well over a decade is highly suspect. The best thing they could have done to give their child a better life is to become a legal citizen of this country. They failed to do that. In that child’s upbringing, they have taught that child deceit. A child is a product of their environment and that child has grown up to be an entitled young adult.
Stop threating American citizens with hate words. Please take a look at yourself and the true reason you support illegals. It has nothing to do with compassion.
As a Black woman that was raised by both parents, has earned multiple degrees in higher education and who is raising a family together with her husband I am in the minority. You don’t need to lecture me on racism or xenophobia. In fact, I am the Democratic Party’s worst nightmare. They have done a darn good job of keeping many of my people in the dark and feeding them dung. Black America is not stupid, we are waking up and realizing we are pawns in you quest to win. Even the illegals are figuring that Obama’s promises are ringing hollow.

I’m not an immigration lawyer, but I don’t think you’re right that there is a legal path for becoming a US citizen for a vast majority of illegals in this country (i.e., blue collar laborers, including construction workers, farm workers, etc.). The link you attach to your post is for the US naturalization test, but you can only take that test and go through other steps to become a US citizen if you have already been in this country legally for five years. And basically there is no way for most illegals to get into this country legally. The work visas that exist are essentially all for higher level jobs (not laborer jobs), and those visas are typically obtained by the employer who pays an immigration law firm to get those visas. But there are no visas available for laborers, so these people cannot ever get into this country legally in the first place. So it’s not just a matter of passing a test, or going through certain hoops. There really is no legal way for laborers to become US citizens.

Doc Who, a philosopher once stated, “Do what the mind dictates; not what the heart desires”. While I can certainly appreciate your admonition to share thoughts in a respectful manner, I am not altogether sure if the gravity of illegals, and the socioeconomic burdens their presence imposes upon our economy warrant “thoughts from the heart”. Unfortunately, our lawmakers appear to be much too politically timid to approach this matter in a mindful, logical manner, for any decision would surely inflame the passsions of one voting bloc or another. The pure and simple fact, with neither prejudice nor passion, remains…illegals represent a drain upon limited resources.
That, Doc, is from the mind; not the heart.

I teach at an elementary school, and while I feel that most immigrant children are in many ways easier to teach (more motivated, better behaved, and at this level–feel less entitled), I also believe that our school systems are grossly over-burdened. If English isn’t spoken by their parents at home, English is considered the child’s second language. It doesn’t matter how well the child speaks English. Therefore, these children and their parents are entitled to every service (ESOL, translators, etc.) the school system can offer. Motivation to learn English is not created this way.
With that said, I would like to see our country return to an immigration policy that existed in the late 1800s and early 1900s. People were not allowed in this country unless they currently had a family member sponsor them (somewhere they could live–and someone who would financially support them until they were able to support themselves), or they already had a job in this county waiting for them. Most came through Ellis Island and were required to pass a physical examination before they were allowed on the mainland. I also believe our government had an established number of immigrants allowed in the country annually. With fewer numbers, assimilation was gradual, thus not over-burdening the country.
Government entitlements didn’t exist back then; thus, ALL people were more motivated to get a job–any job. Everything was printed in English–no translators! In order to survive in this country, ALL immigrants were very motivated to learn the language of their new country–and they were proud to do so!!
Our legislators have ruined this country by advocating “government dependence” for all. They have killed the motivation of many of the residents of this country.
I do believe illegal immigrants should be deported; they broke the law! Congress should get busy eliminating/limiting all welfare programs, particularly to non-citizens. This would definitely curtail illegal immigration. Jobs that would be vacated by illegal immigrants could then be filled by U.S. citizens. Some say U.S. citizens wouldn’t want these jobs– if the welfare programs were curtailed/eliminated, they wouldn’t have much of a choice now, would they?
Quite honestly, I’m so very tired of the “entitlement mentality” that has been created in this county (BY OUR GOVERNMENT)–somebody needs to do something about it! Get rid of entitlements, and illegal immigration will take care of itself!!!

How are these anchor babies going to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the birth certificate they are carrying around is real? Illegal immigrants have a nasty habit of creating and forging fake documents. If our own President can be hounded ad naseum by a group of kooks, what makes you think that illegals and or their anchor babies have any hope?
I am one of those that have recently changed my tune in regards to illegal immigrants. Threats and hate language like yours, FYI, is the main reason I changed. Your twisted logic and that of other supporters is highly suspect.
The only reason that you and a shrinking number of Americans support illegal immigration is purely political. Illegals give you a lower class of people that increases your status. Supporting illegals gives you a false sense of security that they will vote Democratic and support socialism. Or is it the conservatives ideals you simply wish to oppose?

Anytime illegal immigration comes up, the statement is always made that they take the jobs no citizen will do. That is not completely true, especially in the construction industry. I know a very honest contractor who pays all the payroll taxes he is supposed to pay and follows all the codes in his state for home construction. He is being driven out of business by unscrupulous contractors who hire illegals, do not pay all the taxes on them and pay them low wages. They do not always build to code, but they say it is cheaper to use illegals and redo the few code violations an inspector may find. Construction jobs are good middle class jobs that many citizens would be thrilled to have. We need to follow the money and go after unscrupulous employers in all industries. If there were no jobs, there would be no illegal immigrants.

Good point. Why not make it legal for these people to work so that unscrupulous contractors cannot abuse these people? They will then pay taxes, contributing out society even more. But, the current issue isn’t about those laborers. The issues are about their children who are already here. What good does it do to “keep them in place” by denying them opportunities to be engineers and other productive citizens? Denying these students education – and legal route to residency and work – does not solve anything.

In this debate about illegals and citizens, people are forgetting the legal aliens… who are here on work visas, pay higher taxes than anyone else, contribute to the community by donations and volunteer services, do not have any criminal records, and work hard to get that much covetted green card, which takes more than 10 years…. their children don’t get scholarships, they do not get medicare or medicaid, they are not eligible for any govt. sponsored benefits, even though they pay taxes. The immigration laws are indeed very unfair, even to those who do pay taxes. What’s your take on this?

Illegal immigrants are beating out American students for college? That’s impressive academic achievement! We are required by law to teach any student K – 12, and prohibited from asking about their immigration status. Why are we turning it off at college? To guarantee a sub-par work force?
We should be grateful that hardworking, intelligent people still want to come to the U.S. despite some solid efforts by our own population to destroy things.

FY, I respect your view on potential downrange “costs”, however, at day’s end, the arguement of just how we, this (once) globally respected Country, are to address the illegal issue becomes pretty much a black and white (absolutely no racial overtones intended) issue…”is the current law being broken or not being broken”? We can apply this very same question to just about any law of the land. I completely understand the nature of extenuating circumstance, ie 2nd/3rd/4th generation illegal, ie “my parents/grandparents carried me, as an infant, across the Rio Grande. Why should I pay for their sins”? Many fine arguements serve to justify what is, in the end, ILLEGAL. Consequently, what was, once, the law of the land has turned into nothing short of anarchy; YOU and I and EVERYONE who expresses concern over this issue winds up paying for this anarchy; I need not elaborate on just HOW we pay…we pay.
Now, there ARE processes, ascribed by law, which allow those who choose “the easy way” to “do it right. The teeming millions did so on a lil’ ole island just outside New York when we were all just seeds, and the Country is far and away the better for it. These teeming millions CONTRIBUTED, some in big big ways; the vast majority in relatively obscure fashion.
All this being said, however, one issue must prevail: we cannot/should not form our opinions on, as one commentor put it, thoughts of the heart. Sure, we all want the very best, and we would like for everyone…the rest of the world…to share in the bounty which this Country provides.
I don’t know if you fly commercially very much…those who do might align their thoughts to the safety brief preceeding each and every flight: “In the event of loss of pressurization, don your own mask/TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF FIRST, before helping others”. The reason for this is really quite simple…if one allows one’s self to become incapacitated, one is of absolutely no help, neither to self nor to others. We, as a Country, have allowed ourselves to dangerously approach, if not become financially, economically, and morally incapacitated. We are currently in no position to be of any REAL help to the rest of the world, and until we somehow manage to get our own “ducks in a row”, pretending to “help” others by allowing them the benefits we bestow can only result in further anarchy.

So here are some questions…
Georgia has some very strict anti-illegal immigrant rules now.
So will this translate to higher standard of living for Georgians in a few years? Will this translate to lower property taxes and lower state taxes for me since the assumption is that illegals were to blame for higher taxes? Will this translate to lower unemployment for Georgians??
Back in the early 1990s with a Democratic President and no wars, most Americans were fat and happy with jobs. There were illegal immigrants back then just like now.
Now that the economy is in shambles, we are wasting tons on money on wars, we have intellectually bankrupt politicians……we just need to find a scapegoat to blame this on.
So lets blame it on the illegal aliens,,specially the ones that came to the country as infants or teens. Is this the new American way?

Georgia has some very strict anti-illegal immigrant rules now.
Unfortunately, Obama and the Democrats continue to fight these anti-illegal immigrant rules. They put the interests of illegal aliens before those of US citizens that need jobs to support their families. They continue to force local taxpayers to fund the K-12 educations (and in some states they subsidize college educations) of the children of illegal aliens.
Obama and the Democrats have just put in place new policies that provide the US with an open borders immigration environment. Illegal aliens now will not be deported unless they have been convicted of a felony.
We continue these policies along with adding more legal immigrants than the number of new jobs being created in the US. All this is happening during a time of severe unemployment. Unemployment is much higher than the 10% figure stated in the news because so many US citizens have given up hope of finding a job to support their families.
We can’t even provide for our own citizens! We have a huge national deficit yet we continue with entitlement/welfare programs that are unsustainable. Since we can take care of our own citizens, why should be responsible for the citizens of other countries?

I’m for a much more pragmatic policy – let these students get education, become employed, and make as much money as they can make so that they can contribute as much to the society as they can instead of becoming another generation of illegal laborers who get abused by scrupulous business owners. [Of course, if they make too much money, then their Republican friend (yes, at that point those greedy no-principle politicians will want to be their friends) will make sure that they don't have to pay much tax, but I guess that's a different issue.]

Even then, by the end of the second term he handed over a recession to his successor. Your notion of “fairness” is what 4-year olds have – everyone must receive the same. Our society is not built on such a notion. We give “favoritism” all the time – sometimes we write laws favoring some groups over the other – like heterosexuals by defining “marriage” as one man and one woman.
I, however, do believe that policies (and laws) should be made with much more practical and pragmatic concerns. Those students who the Dream Act would affect are more likely to make positive contributions to our society than many of our citizens. Why not give them the legal status? I don’t remember every singling out “Hispanic,” as you did, but I also think many of these “illegals” are hard working people – unlike some of our welfare dependent citizens. You seem to think only “lazy” people like those welfare-dependent US citizens will come to this country if we let them freely come to the US. If they are lazy, why would they even bother coming to the US? For free health care? Why would they worry about it if they aren’t sick right now? Just because they come from the third world countries doesn’t mean they are willing to work hard. Why should we keep them in the situation where some business owners can abuse them? Let the business owners pay the same wages/taxes. Let them pick the ones who work hard and benefit their businesses – not based on citizenships.

However these angry people have to come to grips with the tectonic shift that is taking place in this country. Unless our education system is fixed soon….we will become the third world.
It wont be because those illegals got our jobs and bankrupted our economy.
It will be because we as a country have lost the competitive edge and this country will become a country of the super rich and the poor with no middle class.

Are you not aware that many illegals benefit from social services that are not available in their home countries because of the cost? Yes, people we have a problem. The problem STARTS when we meet them at the county line offering them welfare, medicaid and food stamps. Then we are FORCED by law to admit them into our school systems even though they do not have a social security number. How many of you know that it is “illegal” to turn a child away from public education even if they do not have a social security number and can’t speak a word of English?!?! Then we give them FREE lunch and hire teachers to teach them our American language! Where else in the world could you go and the COUNTRY conform to the fact that you do not speak their language? In my opinion, we shouldnt allow them to ENTER our education system if they do not have a social security number. They have overcrowded our education system and drained our healthcare. Send them back to Mexico, Puerto Rico or where ever else they came from. THE AMERICAN TAXPAYERS SHOULD NOT BE FOOTING THE BILL FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS! Period! Yes, some of the males have jobs, while their “wives” stay home as baby factories and they send MOST of their money back to their homeland. Do away with the “anchor baby” laws. If you are not born to a LEGAL United States citizen, then you too are an ILLEGAL. We have ways that they can come here legally — they just chose to do it their way. Now lets do it right and send them ALL back and if they want to become an American citizen, then let them go through the correct channels.

@ Reality,
I have no problem providing education to children of illegal for a pragmatic reason – uneducated children of illegal will further burden our systems. We already have enough of native bums who have become huge burdens for the society.
What I don’t understand is how they end up getting things such as food stamps and housing subsidies. It seems like we should be requesting our municipal and state government to check the eligibility of those who apply for those benefits instead of asking colleges and universities. Perhaps if they are getting paid fair wages, then they might not have to depend on those welfare programs. I know some LEGAL immigrants who cannot get these benefits because they don’t qualify.
You keep bringing up construction workers, but the starting point of this discussion is about those college students who have otherwise qualified to be admitted to these prestigious institutions. I doubt many of the would end up being construction workers. Their parents may have been, but not most of these students.
As for the “middle” group (politically), it can be argued that THEY are the ones that led this country into the mess because they don’t stick with one or the other. Maybe they had stuck with the Republicans, we would have been in a better position. OR, we would have been in a much worse situation so that we know for sure that the Republicans are just a bunch of wackos. We keep going back and forth, wandering aimlessly while those who have the means continue to enrich themselves.

This law is in no way a race issue. It applies to any illegal alien regardless of where he or she is from. There are illegal alliens here from all over the world (they are brown, yellow and WHITE). And I suspect they come for a varity of reasons however the one thing that they all have in common is that they are here ILLEGALLY!
It is illegal for an illegal alien to work in the US. Why would any Georgia tax payer want to invest in an education for an illegal alien who, after graduation for a Georgia college, could not work inthe US?
We would be better served by investing in our own sons and daughters and returning the illegals to their home countries.

I agree with what Georgia has done, now if only California would follow it’s lead. If you’re here illegally, I have no sympathy for you what so ever. We have enough “legal” citizens to take of.

@Proud Lib, Try as you may, you just don’t get it. You honor those who have broken the law in coming here and in the same breath say that the people who have become slaves to the government welfare system (which the Democratic party fully supports) won’t do the jobs. In essence, you’re talking out of both sides of your mouth.
Reality makes a point that most conservative and liberals who are entrenched in their ideology they want what their group wants. Independents review the information and decide Democrat or Republican, which is the best. So, in close elections, Reality is right on the money, Independents are the King or Queen makers.
Remove the government incentives for all education and aid for illegal aliens and the problem will can be resolved. Otherwise, just open the border to everyone, coming and going, and all those in need will arrive. You can have a full time job taking care of them. I’ll take what I have and start over in another country.

I am extremely pleased that our lawmakers have barred illegals from our colleges. Now it’s time that they enact a law to bar them from elementary and high schools.

@ Johndoemo. Read the news story on top of this blog. They’re only barred from UGA, Georgia Tech, Georgia State University, Georgia College & State University and the Medical College of Georgia. They can attend any of the other USG schools if they pay out-of-state tuition.

Of course these high school students have the right to attend ANY college to which they apply and are accepted to. Why GA TECH has a very high admiision rate of non-GA and non-American students. It and Emory are probably the most diverse campuses in GA. If the student graduates from an accredited high school, legal status should not be an issue. I fully support a change in this policy. These good ‘ole boys are not the brightest and are really posturing…as their kids wouldn’t make the grade to attend a competitive college anyway.

So, What would happen to me if I went to Mexico and tried the same thing?
– The Mexican government will bar foreigners if they upset “the equilibrium of the national demographics.” How’s that for racial and ethnic profiling?
– If outsiders do not enhance the country’s “economic or national interests” or are “not found to be physically or mentally healthy,” they are not welcome. Neither are those who show “contempt against national sovereignty or security.” They must not be economic burdens on society and must have clean criminal histories. Those seeking to obtain Mexican citizenship must show a birth certificate, provide a bank statement proving economic independence, pass an exam and prove they can provide their own health care.
– Illegal entry into the country is equivalent to a felony punishable by two years’ imprisonment. Document fraud is subject to fine and imprisonment; so is alien marriage fraud. Evading deportation is a serious crime; illegal re-entry after deportation is punishable by ten years’ imprisonment.
