Do all high school students need Algebra II? Maybe.

math (Medium)I have run several pieces and letters on the education op-ed page by people asking why students need algebra, including some by math teachers who contend that few employees will be called upon to use higher level math skills in their jobs. (Take a look at this good piece — You Will Never Use This Math Again — by local math teacher Ken Sprague Sr. )

The Washington Post attempts to answer the Algebra II question in a long piece this week.  This is a very even-handed and well done article. I am sharing an excerpt, but please read the whole piece if you have the time.

I put key paragraphs in bold. I think these issues are relevant to the Georgia debate under way on how to teach math and what to teach.  If you search this blog, you will see several pieces in the last few weeks on math, including this one on the fact that math will be more demanding no matter what Georgia calls its courses.

According to the Post story:

Of all of the classes offered in high school, Algebra II is the leading predictor of college and work success, according to research that has launched a growing national movement to require it of graduates. In recent years, 20 states and the District have moved to raise graduation requirements to include Algebra II, and its complexities are being demanded of more and more students.

The effort has been led by Achieve, a group organized by governors and business leaders and funded by corporations and their foundations, to improve the skills of the workforce. Although U.S. economic strength has been attributed in part to high levels of education, the workforce is lagging in the percentage of younger workers with college degrees, according to the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development.

But exactly how to raise the education levels of the U.S. workforce is a matter of debate. And whether learning Algebra II causes students to fare better in life, or whether it is merely correlated with them doing better — because smart, motivated kids take Algebra II — isn’t clear. Meanwhile, some worry that Algebra II requirements are leading some young people to quit school.

The District this year joins other states requiring high school graduates to meet the Achieve standards that include Algebra II; Maryland and Virginia do not. But no state has pushed Algebra II more than Arkansas, which began requiring the class last year for most graduates and assesses how well students have done with a rigorous test — one of only two states to administer the test. Only 13 percent of those who took the Algebra II test in Arkansas were deemed “prepared” or better, but state officials said they are aiming to raise that figure rather than lower standards.

One of the key studies supporting the Algebra II focus was conducted by Anthony Carnevale and Alice Desrochers, then both at the Educational Testing Service. They used a data set that followed a group of students from 1988 to 2000, from eighth grade to a time when most were working.

The study showed that of those who held top-tier jobs, 84 percent had taken Algebra II or a higher class as their last high school math course. Only 50 percent of employees in the bottom tier had taken Algebra II. “Algebra II does increase the likelihood of being employed in a good job,” they reported, although warning that many factors come into play.

To check the Algebra II findings against the “real world,” the Achieve researchers then asked college professors and employers to identify which skills are necessary to succeed.

Somewhat to their surprise, they found that whether students were going into work or college, they needed the skills taught in Algebra II. Other independent studies backed them up. One conducted by U.S. Department of Education researcher Clifford Adelman found that students who took Algebra II and at least one more math course attained “momentum” toward receiving a bachelor’s degree.

“There was a fair amount of judgment that went into this,” said Michael Cohen, president of Achieve and a former assistant secretary of education in the Clinton administration. But “it turns out to get the skills needed, students had to reach Algebra II.”

The push for Algebra II had begun, and it was embraced by many states.

But not everyone is convinced that Algebra II is the answer. Among the skeptics is Carnevale, one of the researchers who reported the link between Algebra II and good jobs. He warns against thinking of Algebra II as a cause of students getting good jobs merely because it is correlated with success.

“The causal relationship is very, very weak,” he said. “Most people don’t use Algebra II in college, let alone in real life. The state governments need to be careful with this.”

The danger, he said, is leaving some kids behind by “getting locked into a one-size-fits-all curriculum.”

In Arkansas and elsewhere, educators worry that the class requirement could lead students to quit.

“Some students, who’ve gotten behind over the years, are never going to pass Algebra II,” said Teresa George, a veteran teacher, after a morning coaxing students through rational functions. If it becomes an obstacle to graduation, “then you’ve lost them. And what’s their next option?”

For proof of the usefulness of Algebra II, students need look no farther than the largest employers in Conway. Acxiom, a database company that employs 2,100 in the town, hires software and database developers, most of whom have bachelor’s degrees in technical fields. For them, Algebra II skills are a prerequisite. Similarly, at Snap-on Equipment, a plant that employs 170 making the sophisticated gears that garages use to align and balance tires, most production jobs require associate’s degrees in electronics.

By contrast, at the Kimberly-Clark plant, which makes feminine hygiene and adult incontinence products, production workers need only a high school education. The jobs pay 11 to $20 an hour, and when 70 spots recently came open during an expansion, about 2,000 people applied.

“We’re looking for people with the ability to think critically,” said Jeremy Cannady, until recently a manufacturing efficiency coordinator at the plant. But “not the ability to do exponential functions or logarithms.”

Students require “subject matter knowledge” of Algebra II and Trig if and only if they are planning to take Calculus. Calculus has Alg II and Trig as logical prerequisites. It’s pretty open and shut, seems to me.

Algebra II? What’s the alternative? I thought everyone took that already. I had time to take at least 2 more math classes after that…there was time to get a pre-calc and then calculus had I chosen to. If they’re saying you’re not doing well by not taking Algebra II by the end of your senior year I’d have to agree…at least in Cobb County you’d be behind the “college prep” schedule by two math levels or more not to get there!

Maybe they don’t all need it, but let’s put it this way: My two sons went to Georgia Tech as engineers. Algebra I & II led to Linear Algebra, Calculus, Statistics, and probability in college. The top ten college majors that lead to the highest salaries are ALL math oriented. Engineering majors make up 8 of the 10 with physics and economics the other 2. All have the highest starting salaries of students out of college. Both my sons had companies competing for them! It’s simple, you do the math!

JRev, I agree. Science and engineering fields (which require AT LEAST highscool Algebra, Trig and Pre-Calc) and then go into college level theoretical math subjects are a great basis for critical thinking in general regardless wether you chose to work in a technological field. I also graduated from Georgia Tech and do not use thermodynamics, deformable bodies, or any 3 levels of calculus in my career. But I still think all that stuff contributes to critical problem-solving skills and a work ethic. It serves many people very very well.

Algebra II is too hard for most kids. In my home school emporium we have quit teaching math altogether. I got the boys one of those arm calculators from QVC. I used a coupon so it was really cheap. Anywho, we just focus mostly on Christian teachings and Fox News. I’m so excited for my boys…the world really is their oyster, if they could spell oyster, that is.

I deal with people on accounts where there ius supposed to be a certain commission. In order to get the correct amount to settle the account, we are often given the number the client wants and have to add the commission on top to have a settlement figure.

This requires algebra, not algebra II, mind you. They people I am dealing with rarely if ever get the math right and it often costs their employers thousands of dollars. As such, useful!

As has already been pointed out: CORRELATION is not CAUSATION. The reason that Algebra II is a good indicator is because people elect to take it, not because they are forced to. That means it also has certain statistical skews toward a particular measurement of success. Perhaps Probability and Statistics would be a better option so that people understood this better.
I use various aspects of mathematics every day in my work as a software developer. I realize some posters do not even within my same profession; that’s OK, I understand that. Some people work with numerical methods, for example; others work on business problems.
Pointing to the Chinese and saying “look at what they study” doesn’t prove anything. They aren’t exactly kicking our butts in that space. However, they have a centrally-controlled government which can mandate whatever it wants (as opposed to a republic or democracy) and can say, “start building XYZ technology” while we sit around arguing about whether to convert to the metric system or not.

What is Algebra II? I do not know what Algebra II is . To me Algebra is Algebra and it is a branch of Mathematics which has to be taught to people who have the aptitude for it. I believe all students should have an education in the areas they show greater aptitude. This is what would make division of Labor and skills meaningful.

We are discouraging the creativity of our children in schools. When I was in school I hated fine art and have never loved it but I love Mathematics and all its complexities. There were other people who love Art and all its cosmic beauty. In the long run I still approach them when I want something artistic and they approach me when we want to resolve complexities.
We all coexist and are contributing to the advancement of Society.

Whether they use it or not (and the critical thinking learned in algebra is used every day even if you aren’t writing calculations down), there is educational value in having someone who is not mathematically inclined take such a course, simply to learn how to work through something that may be difficult and still achieve proficiency.

afadjato, I think I agree with you to a point. My college education was highly technical, but my higshcool education focused on literature and fine arts. My career uses elements of each. Therefore, I say to you we ought to remember to at least get kids interested in multidisciplinary problem solving. To use your example of math vs. fine arts. Doesn’t math inform music and visual design? It can be a valuable tool for creation in those realms. Similarly, literature can inspire scientific research, business and strategy. Should we force inter-connectedness in the public education base? I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure I’d never tell a kid “stick to what you’re good at” if they would chose to at least take a class in another field.

I, too, had a very difficult time with algebra. Has it occurred to anyone that it is not the subject being taught, but the way in which it is taught? I finally found success in college through a remedial math course. It is important that a teacher understand her “audience.” In this case, students that were missing the basic fundamentals of mathematics from middle school through high school. The teacher would explain the first step, have the entire class perform the first step, then move on to the next step, and so forth. I finally got it, as did most of the others in class. If this could be taught in such a simple way in college, why not in middle school and high school. If SYLVAN can successfully teach kids math, why can’t our public school teachers? Sylvan has a huge success rate, and I would strongly encourage anyone with children struggling in school to send their children there (if you can afford it). They have found a successful way to teach children, and I believe our public school teachers could learn from their program. Everyone does not learn the same way. The best way to educate effectively is to know how to communicate effectively.

All high school students need to be encouraged to enroll and excel in challenging Math courses. Our high schoolers also need to be held to Math (and Reading, Writing et al.)performance standards which prepare them for successes in any post-secondary educational endeavors they might choose and for successes in the post-curricular world of family, citizenship and work.

Any argument that uses the label “Algebra II” is incomplete and insufficient. As catlady suggested, “algebra II” is not a universal concept, and debating whether or not algebra II is needed by everyone makes no sense.

“Here is a simple test. In 9th grade ask each student to solve the following problem.

1 + 1 = ?

Those answering 2 get to move onto advanced math classes.
Those answering 11 get to move immediately to a juvenile detention center.”

Actually, move those answering 11 into a programming class. There are 10 types of people in the world, those who understand string concatenation and those who do not.

…and back to the subject. Use the Algebra II class for continued problem solving. Have it as part of the college prep diploma and not required for technical prep. Of course this means that someone was wrong to assume that all kids need the same type of prep for life after high school.

As for not being able to do the material: I have had two students who were not capable of Algebra based problems. (Think IQ sub 80…) Every single one of the others could do it if they wanted to concentrate on work instead of the opposite sex or some other form of drama.

MelOW, don’t you think the students at Sylvan are a more exceptionally motivated group? At least as measured by their parents’ expenditure of money? Please, apples to apples. I am guess you are not a teacher of a typical class.

Not throwing off on Sylvan. They must do a good job; so many higher SES people use them when their kids are struggling. But recognize that they are a SELECT group of under-achievers.

Another math teacher: My son, age 2 1/2, told me, when I showed him one finger plus one finger, that it equaled eleven (pointing to the two straight lines that were my fingers)! So I agree with you. It doesn’t mean you are dumb.

When I was in the 9th grade in Alabama, Algebra was required. The teacher never did explain what it was or why it was important. She made fun of all of us who did not understand the process. So, I made up my mind that I was not going to try. I never in 9 months worked even one problem but was passed anyhow. When I took geometry I passed it on my own for the simple reason that it made sense.
Does anyone who is pushing for all to learn algebra realize how many hi school seniors cannot even work basic math problems? That should be important as that is what most of us will need to know.

No. But all need to learn basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, some percentages, and elemental statistics). This is about all of the math that most Americans will ever use. Requiring all students to take Algebra II when they have not even mastered basic math is ludicrous. Student-focused learning wherein the students “discuss” historical topics when they can’t even tell you in which century George Washington lived or who was George Washington Carver is equally ludicrous. The educrats [those operating the Educational Industrial Complex] don’t have a lick of sense…or, maybe they do…if everything is money-driven.

I must admit, I am always amused when the “why must we study this, we’ll never use it in real life” question arises. Although not a math teacher, I heard it often enough in the history classes I taught. Over the years, I developed a few answers:

* Young people need exposure to the different types of thinking implicit in all of the academic disciplines.

* Logical thinking is in short supply. Everyone needs to develop this. Math helps. So does history the way I taught it.

* Everyone needs to respect people who have the aptitude and perseverence to perform the difficult tasks that they, themselves are not cut out for. I learned that I wasn’t engineer material at GT in 1967 in spite of decent math/science aptitude. I sure respect what engineers provide to society.

* Young people need challenges. Struggling with difficulty builds character. It also helps the individual learn to cope with failure and pick him(her)self up and go on, a much undervalued skill.

There is lots more but enough for now. Let’s not dumb-down our civilization into oblivion. And, let’s not return to the days when education was the privilege of the rich alone.

Nooooooo!!!! Algebra II isn’t needed. Why in the world do we focus on this useless math in school and spend so little time focusing on math that could actually be useful like personal finance? This is where our focus should be. Yes, a lot of successful people took Algebra II, but that’s probably only because it was part of the college prep curriculum. We need to focus on personal finance in schools. Just as much “rigor” could come from this. Isn’t our current state of financial ineptitude nationwide a cry for more financial knowledge and not useless Algebra II that’s never used?!?!?!?

When Abraham Lincoln began to study law he realized something was missing. So he put down his law books and got a copy of Euclid’s elements, a classical treatise on mathematics and logic. In his Gettysburg address “the proposition that all men are created equal” the word “proposition” is directly from Euclid. Personally I’ll never need to know that two parallel lines never intersect because I’m never going to infinity. But the training of beginning with axioms or postulates and developing hypothesis or theorems is useful in other areas. Namely, it teaches you to ask where’s the proof? The topics that I was forced to study that have never been of any use to me is anything written by Shelly, Keats, Byron, Whitman, or Frost. But Dickens, Wilde, Twain, Poe, and Melville are worth reading.

algebra two is problem solving in practice. trig functions model real world cycles. Math laid the foundation for technology. It is not easy to teach or learn, it takes time, which is in short supply. It can be taught better but we dont know what that looks like.

If people are so scared of Algebra II, why not get rid of all of the ridiculous English Lit classes while you’re at it. Let’s pick and choose which classes to take. At least Algebra II teaches critical thinking skills. I’m much more likely to use those than anything I did in American or British Lit.

People this statement alone sums up everything. I get a very condescending tone from reading the comments on this blog. As if you couldn’t be successful if you don’t take algebra II. Or as if you are stupid if you don’t excell in it. Is algebra II a great way to build logical and critical thinking skills, yes. Is it the end all, be all to critical thinking and logic. Not by a long shot. Some of these same people that are on their algebra high horse, couldn’t even build the house they stay in, if you put all the tools and materials right there in front of them. Which would be a logical and critical thinking exercise, so it’s all realitive. Now I’m not saying that Algebra II should be removed from the curriculum but what is needed is a more diverse curriculum to accomidate our diverse workforce. Some students will need it some won’t. Who cares what math the paramedic took when he/she is saving your life in the back of an ambulance. Students should be exposed to all things so they know what they like and not like. But at some point in their high school career they should be able to focus on their strenghts and interest; instead of someone else telling them, what they have to take. No matter what the interest is; all career chioces are relavent and serve a purpose in society.

Someone above asked how calculus and algebra can be used in real life problems? Here is one example of many which could be provided: The acceleration is the first derivative of the velocity with respect to time. For a falling body, dv/dt = g where g is about 32.2 ft/sec/sec. If a body is dropped from rest, this equation can be integrated to give v= g.t. This gives the speed of the body at any time after being released. But the speed is the first derivative of the position with respect to time. Therefore, dy/dt = gt. Assuming the initial position is y = 0, integrate this equation and obtain the vertical position of y at any time to be 1/2. g t(2), where t(2) is t squared or t times t. So, this equation, often memorized by rote in high school physics classes, can be proved or “derived” from the principles of physics, algebra and calculus.
Suppose you are standing at the edge of a deep well. How deep is the well? You simply drop a stone into the well and count one thousand one, one thousand two, …. etc. until you hear the stone strike the surface of the water at the bottom of the well. Suppose the stone takes 3 seconds to reach the bottom. Then the depth of the well is 1/2. 32.2 ft/sec/sec . 9 sec.sec = 145 feet. Isn’t this much better than trying to lower yourself into the well to measure its depth, or trying to use a tape measure to do the job?

All these comments remind me of my 6th grade math teacher in Denver. She told me that learning the slide rule was very important in teaching me to think and that nothing would ever replace the slide rule. Kind of like the argument that there would always be a need for something thought critical and it went by the wayside. Personal opinion, anyone that lives on there cell phone needs to learn to think much less think critically. Imagine, getting a date usiing your cell phone to post your picture and intimate details about you personal life to then crossing you fingers. And many are worried about Algebra II critical thinking, I would rather have a person that has a work ethic than a person that can critically think but cannot show up on time.

Suppose you drive your pickup truck with an 8 ft long bed to pick up one yard of mulch to spread in your yard. The width of the bed between the fender wells is 4 ft. The seller of this mulch loads it onto your truck with a loader and the result is a pyramid shaped pile 4 ft wide at the bottom, 8 feet deep and a height of h. What is h for one yard of mulch and why is this important to know? It is important to know because if h is less than this value, you are not receiving the amount of mulch you were told you are buying.
Let us call the width of the bed 2.d where d is obiously one half of the width. Let L be the depth of the bed. Looking at the pyramid from the back of the truck, it consists of two right triangles of base d and altitude h. Each has an area of one half the base times the altitude. (remember this old formula you never needed for any practical problem?) The area of each triangle is 1/2. d.h. So the area of the end of the pyramid is 2 times this or d.h. Multiply this number times the length L and this gives the volume of the pyramid: d.h.L. So the volume of the pyramid is the same as a rectangular shaped volume of width d and height h. In our example, d = 2 ft and L = 8 ft. Therefore the volume is 16 times h in units of cubic feet.
How much is “one yard of mulch”? One “yard” means one cubic yard or a volume of a cube of side one yard or 3 feet per side. Therefore, the volume of one yard is 3ft.3ft.3ft or 27 cubic feet. (See why you need to know these facts?). Therefore, 16.h = 27. Solving for h gives h = 27/16 = about 1.7 feet high. Therefore, if you are told you are paying for a “yard” of mulch, the peek or point of the pyramid should be about 1.7 feet high. This is what you receive for what you were charged or about $30 per yard. But suppose they are only giving you less than a yard of material, the peek will be lower. If it is you were fleeced. This is why you need to know Algebra II, so you won’t be fleeced so so you will know the difference. If the peek is only about 10 inches high, you paid $30 for about a half a yard of mulch. You were fleeced. Isn’t this vital to know? And you didn’t even need an electronic calculator or slide rule to do the job or a high paid expert either did you?

Mathematics is just as beaituful and elegant as the most beautiful art work or the most profound poem. In some ways it is more so. Because mathematics follows certain rules. If you violate the rules, a price is to be paid, possibly a price of safety.
The laws of nature also follow rules. These rules are described with the beautiful subject of mathematics. It is basically a shorthand for what could also be described in longhand, but then would be very cumbersome. For those who say they never used the principles of Algebra II in real life, nothing could be further from the truth. You cannot use what you don’t know. Everything you ever learned is buried deep inside your brain. All these subjects, from English, to reading to art to literature, chemistry, physics, geology, mathematics, all act synergistically to form “you” and your intelligence. :You use all these concepts in making decisions of life every second of every day. Again, while of course no one can know everything, ignorance is bliss. The best scams are those in which the victim does not know they were fleeced. This is the most practical reason for possessing knowledge. Knowledge is truth, knowledge is power, knowledge is comfort, knowledge is wealth, knowledge is everything. Ignorance is emptiness, horror, death. This is why you must celebrate Algebra II and Physics too. Move out of the way of a falling brick heading for your head. Don’t move an you are dead. Again, you can’t use what you don’t know.
Consider even the simplest tasks like changing the oil on a car. Suppose you hire a low level idiot to change your oil. He is so stupid he does not realize he must tighten the oil plug lest the plug will vibrate loose and let the oil out and destroy a $10,000 engine. Do you want idiots like this working for you or working for others, possibly cauing horrible accidents and consequences for foolishness due to ignorance?
The more knowledge the better, not the other way around. Wake up Americans or you will be working for the Chinese or other country who will own America.

The function ax(2)+bx+c, as a function of the independent real variable x, with real parameters a, b and c graphs into a shape called a parabola. For certain real values of a, b and c, this parabola has two crossings (or values of zero) for two real values of the independent variable x. This happens when the quantity
b(2)-4ac is positive. If this quantity is zero, the two crossings or “roots” are equal. If this value is negative, there are no crossings or roots on the real number line. This is what gives rise to the concept of “imaginary” or complex numbers which have two parts, a real part and another part called imaginary or complex. This forms the subject of a whole new branch of mathematics called analysis which was fully developed during most of the nineteenth century. It is extremely elegant and beautiful. But of course, ignorance is bliss, so if you don’t learn this subject, you remain ignorant of it and intellectually dead. It has many useful practical applications too in physics, engineering, statistics, summing series and calculating interest tables to name a few. But of course ignorance is bliss.

The career path that you want probably includes the ability to learn, think and perform, perhaps perform under pressure like when you take those algebra tests.
You may never to use algebra, but you won’t likely be successful in a good career without the skills you learn while succeeding at algebra. Good luck. I hope you find a new career path.

If kids were on grade level when they enter high school, then fine….make Algebra 2 the minimum math standard to graduate. I have no problems with that. What are we going to do with the abundance of socially promoted kids in rural and inner-city schools? Ever had a room full of kids who were just one step away from being in juvenile detention, or alternative school? Do you think they, or their guardian(s), have any appreciation for solving quadratic equations with complex number solutions, or graphing logarithmic functions?

This question, sadly, is indicative of the rather short-sighted view of education, and just how education is to fit into the long-term goal of preping generations to assume viable roles in the future of this great Country. We didn’t learn Algebra, Trig, and all the “stick” topics of academe because we just might, someday, be called upon to employ and apply those specific skills on the job. That eventuality just may and could happen, however, the real reason we take these courses is the very same reason we go to the gym, take that morning run, make the appropriate dietary choices, etc, etc. The brain…and the intellect…must be exercised in order to enable us to understand the complexities of life and make the appropriate judgements in both the short and long-term interests. For this very reason, I am adamantly against this multi-tiered approach to academe. The kid who will someday work at Micky Ds or Walmart will benefit from the “mental workout” of having mastered the mysteries of advanced mathematics and the sciences. The key here is that the very same kid, while not being called upon to recite Chauser and solve quadratics, WILL have the capability of accepting greater challenges and responsibilities. To even contemplate otherwise only limits a generation to lifetime mediocrity.

America is the country that really believes in numbers. Students are not performing well – give teachers more money, still not good, put more computers in classrooms. Kids do not know arithmetic – make them take 4 years of math in high school.
Funny, but no one will attempt to build a four story building if the foundation or any of previously built floors are not good. Any construction worker who did not take algebra II in high school knows one simple fact: before laying any new layer of bricks the previous one must be done correctly. The purpose of learning algebra, unlike geometry or arithmetic is to learn logic and critical thinking, notjust mathematics that many of us will apply in personal and business life. If students understood the goal they would be more motivated.

This is probably an age-old question. The real question should be “Are kids ready able and willing to accept the challenges of ‘the hard things’, or, softened by the wonders of technology, which essentially allows the kid to NOT have to think, do we finally have a generation which will grow up with basically, the very same intelect thay had on day #1 of 1st grade”?

Generations going back to the earliest days of formal education, have complained of “tough arithmetic”, yet somehow, managed to overcome those problem areas and prevail. The “advancement” of civilization, as we know it today, is proof of this. So now that, all of a sudden, the current gen sees the adult community questioning the wisdom of advanced arithmetic; what message does this send? “Wopee, I don’t need math”!

Let’s pull our heads out from the warm dark recesses and think about the topics we choose to validate. EVERYONE, regardless of destination (college, trades, or even menial labor) needs the mental discipline of advanced mathematical studies. Any other thought to the contrary is BS, folley, and a sure way to generational mediocrity.

Just saw a program on CNN conducted by Ally Velchie (sp?), and he had two guests, and I don’t know who they were (caught it channel surfing), and one of the topics he brought up was the push for all kids to master Algebra 2 before they graduate. The black man, and the white man on the show said pretty much the same thing, and that is, there are some kids who just simply need to know the math that applies to the everyday life of all of us. Teaching math theory in the hopes that the rigor and the logical thinking that goes behind it will benefit the kids are not as important as showing them the math that will be applied directly to everyday living, i.e., simple algebra, ratios, proportions, percents, bookkeeping, basic geometry, basic probability & basic statistics.

As I’ve said dozens of times on here, there are elementary and middle schools across the state that just shuffle kids along, whether they really pass or not. The high schools pretty much make them tow the line, academically, and the failure rate in the 9th grade at these schools is just atrocious. The math teachers who have to teach these overcrowded classes full of kids who a little rough around the edges are just pulling their damned hair out, trying to get them to sit-up straight, behave and listen to yammering about solving radical equations, or solving quadratic equations. I teach the upper & lower level kids, and have for years. When we had two tracks for kids to go through, things were manageable. However, since this bunch of overly educated, bespectacled screw-ups flipped the math program over on its’ head, scores of once-cheerful and dedicated teachers are becoming burned out, and many have left the “profession”.

If you have not taught these “math challenged” kids who have coasted their way to the 9th grade, not passing either their 6th through 8th grade math classes, nor the corresponding CRCT’s, then you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about when you promote the prevailing program we have in place.

These policymakers who held these meetings around the state should be grateful that I didn’t show up at any of them. I would have probably been led out by security as their ears would be ringing from my tirade.

HS Math Teach, for the benefit of those who cannot/will not pay attention to the presentation of math complexities…go to the nearest Mickey Dees, get a trunkload of “career apps”, and let your charges contemplate the “opportunities” which await them.
