Here are the three finalists for the DeKalb superintendent:
I just posted another blog on their backgrounds. Check it out here.
* Dr. Gloria Davis, Superintendent of Decatur (Illinois) Public Schools
* Arthur R. Culver, Superintendent of Champaign (Illinois) Community Unit School District #4
* Dr. Lillie Cox, Superintendent of Hickory (North Carolina) Public Schools
From the school system on Thursday’s public forum with the three candidates:
During the forum, each superintendent candidate will have 50 minutes to introduce themselves and answer 10 written questions from the public. Parents and members of the community are invited to submit written questions of the candidates. Questions from the public must be submitted at the forum prior to 5:30 p.m.
Parents and those in the community who cannot attend the forum can submit written questions on the DeKalb Schools website at www.dekalbsuperintendentsearch.com. The forum also will be broadcast live on Dekalb Schools’ PDS TV 24 cable access channel on Comcast.
After each candidate makes a presentation and answers questions, members of the public will be asked to fill out a form regarding each candidate. These forms will be collected and presented to the DeKalb County Board of Education for its consideration during the selection process.
The Board of Education is seeking a permanent superintendent for the DeKalb County School System. This is one of the Board’s most important responsibilities, and the Board is conducting a national search for a leader for DeKalb Schools.
The Board of Education is committed to making the Superintendent Search Process open and transparent, and its search will include multiple opportunities for public input and discussion. Members of the public are encouraged to participate in this important decision for our schools.
For more information and updates on the permanent superintendent search, please visit www.dekalbsuperintendentsearch.com.

Thank God the three candidates are from outside the system. That’s a step in the right direction! Hopefully, the new person will clean house and relieve the bloat, cronyism and nepotism.

All 3 candidates come from school systems that have a grand total of 2 high schools. I was unable to find enrollment numbers for Hickory, NC, but the two Illinois districts top out at 9,000 students each. Is that the level of experience we want for our district of 90,000 students?

I agree we need a candidate from the outside. However, there is still one problem – the board. The superintendent reports to the board.

We do not know what responsibilities each one had prior to taking the job of super for these small school sytems. Foe example, they could have been the assistant super of a mid to large district, but to advance their career options took a position of super of a small district to get more executive level experience.
I hope that people will attend the meetings and ask pertinent, general questions ( not just about what is happening at their school) in order to get the best information and best candidate.

It shouldn’t matter what size district they’re coming from, or even their race at this point. What DeKalb Schools needs is someone that can come in and CLEAN HOUSE. The school system is a mess, the morale is low, and we need to be built back up to where we were in the 90s. And yes, I am speaking as an employee. There are too many internal issues going on that need to be handled before we can start saying who fits right for what.

Poor, new superintendent. Has to put up with idiots who sit on the board (all of them should fall in a dark hole to never be found again), run a school system in a county with NO money, and have elected officials in the county who are largely crooks and out for their wallets, relatives and friends. This county is stinking and I’m ready to move on.

Do you think it really matters who they actually choose? No matter who gets the job nothing is ever going to change. Dekalb County schools have been going down the wrong direction for years and nothing is going to bring them back. I was a product of Dekalb County public schools and ever since I began middle school in 1994, the school system has been getting worse every year.
The school board is full of a bunch of idiots who care nothing about the children, teachers or the neighborhoods. All they care about is screwing things up and asking for raises. It makes me so sad to see what use to be one of the top school districts in the state become the absolute worst.
I have a great idea on how Dekalb County School System could save a lot more money. Since they really don’t care about educating our children anyways, lets close down all the schools. This way Dekalb County can still collect all that tax revenue and we can give the board members huge salaries for doing absolutley nothing. They get paid to do nothing but screw up things right now. Lets stop their destructive behavior by closing all the schools. That’s the way to go. They don’t see education as a priority anyways.

I have a solution for everyone who has children in the Dekalb County School System. GET OUT! MOVE AWAY NOW! That’s exactly what I’m doing. Why keep raising children in a county where education is diminishing every year. Have your tax dollars really work for you and move to a better county. Quit wasting your time and sanity in Dekalb County. The schools are a joke and as parents you need to step up and put your children in better schools. GET OUT and do it NOW.

Well…I see that the finalists have been revealed. I know nothing about these people. But, I think that the Monster of DeKalb County will swallow them whole. Like Jonah of old, they will be fortunate to be spit up upon the metaphorical beach one day. I know that Hickory is a wealthy community in North Carolina. I know that Illinois is up North. There will be the usual honeymoon period and the effusive butt-kissing ritual — everyone’s trying to impress the new supe, hoping to move up the corporate ladder. He or she will eventually bring in his or her own educational thugs to keep all of the “dumb Southerners” (I say this facetiously) in line. J. Jerome Harris and Beverly Hall of New York did the same thing in Atlanta. It’s just the way that they do it.
But, let’s ask the new superintendent to investigate the egregious wrong-doings of the Office of Internal Resolutions.
The new superintendent should first of all do something about the callous way that the Office of Internal Resolutions (OIR) treats the DeKalb County teachers and other employees. You guys know that I have mentioned how State Senator Ronald Ramsey, who heads up OIR [when he is there], shut down a grievance hearing right before it was launched in the Spring of 2009. I was representing the teacher who was about to testify about systematic cheating at Clarkston High School. He had teacher-witnesses to call. (This was before the cheating scandal brought out in the traditional media, though MACE had been picketing in front of the Central Office and in front of Clarkston High School with signs asking, “Systematic Cheating?” and “Systematic Cheating At Clarkston?” This was also before Crawford Lewis was whisked out of the Central Office by police officers and was later indicted.) Perhaps now Ramsey and Lewis can see that it would have been wiser to adhere to the State Law which says that teachers “have a right to be heard, to present relevant evidence, and to examine witnesses at each level.” You see, Ron, as a State Senator, I presume that you were sworn to uphold the law. You help make the laws but don’t want to abide by them? Hmm. How hypocritical.
Oh yes, Ron and I engaged in a heated verbal exchange when he unilaterally and illegally shut down this grievance hearing. Before I know it, Robin Goolsby, Ronald Ramsey’s assistant, had her two hands in my chest pushing me out of the building. All kinds of witnesses were watching. I stopped in the hallway and pointed out to the onlookers what was happening. Beside the teacher and Mr. Norreese Haynes accompanying me, there were many other on-lookers in the hallway.
The next week, I get a stupid letter from that joke of an attorney, Josie Alexander, trying to threaten MACE about “illegal” pickets. (Ha! What a joke! Trust me…we kept picketing — even with the TV cameras filming. Several days in a row…even during torrential downpours of rain! What law school did Josie Alexander go to? Did she learn anything about the First Amendment in law school?). This same lawyer (for Crawford Lewis, I presume) also told me that I was “banned.” Well, now, Josie, do I look like I am banned? Now if I am truly “banned,” then I presume that I can sue your Interim Superintendent and/or the New Superintendent as well as school board members personally, and Ronald Ramsey in pro se action. But, first comes the sworn testimonies in Federal Depositions. Ahhh, the depositions. They are so much fun and so enlightening.
I look forward to a new day in DeKalb. I hope the mess can be cleaned up — especially the mess in OIR. “Resolutions”? OIR tries to “resolve” nearly everything in favor of the powerful. Maybe this is why they don’t like MACE. MACE is about empowering classroom educators, not the abusive and self-absorbed administrators. (c) MACE, March 29, 2011.

Being qualified to oversee a small school system with 2 high schools in a white community is a long way from being qualified to take on one the size and complexity of a school system like DeKalb. Apparently qualification was not on the DeKalb list of importance. Whice one gets the job will not be here very long and then we can play this game again.

So. Let me be clear. Only those people who attend, in person, the hastily called Thursday night “public forum” will have their comments considered by the BOE? What about people who, for whatever reason, watch the entire “goat rodeo” on television? This is a lawsuit waiting to happen! It is NOT okay to give credence to comments by citizens simply because they could attend this meeting — but not allow other citizens — whether they watch or not — to make their comments to the BOE and have them duly considered. I repeat: This is a lawsuit waiting to happen!

Dekalb County is pulling an old play from its playbook. It goes like this:
Double (or almost double) an employee’s salary and Dekalb owns your soul right or wrong!–That is what they do with principals.
In this case, give a superintendent ( who ran a district of 10 000 students ) 90 000 students! Brilliant!

I think parents in South DeKalb and Nroth DeKalb both can agree that we are happy there is not an internal selection for the superintendent position. However, it is going to take a number of years to see any progress toward improvement even with the best leader. The old board hands and the high paid administrators will fight the new sup’s every action. That means continued years of wasted educational time for our children. The best thing that many can do, especially if the system has failed your child is to explore “School Choice”. Charter Schools and now virtual schools. Look at the new virtual school at Connections Academy beginning 2011-2012 school year. The link http://co102w.col102.mail.live.com/default.aspx?wa=wsignin1.0
South DeKalb parents need to start talking to each other in a proactive way to duplicate the respect received by North DeKalb parents from the school system. Virtual School choice also receives each childs share of funds that is the great part.

Oops, I forgot to mention that we should not get our hopes up yet. It is very possible that the old players are using the strategy of making the three selections so they can say they don’t have the experience working with a large system therefore, they should select the interim Missy. They gave her that large raise for a reason other than stated reason. Definitely not because it is commeasurable with other supers in the area. Most other supers have Ph.d degree, she doesn’t. More importantly, whatever happen with doing more for less? See you at the meeting….

It is rather sad that we mistrust our BOE in DeKalb that we all expect some “underhanded” mission in the selection of the “top three” applicants. I hope that no one is correct but it is hard based upon past self-serving behavior that you may all be correct. You would think there would be someone out there who has 4-5 years of classroom experience, 4-5 years of admin exerience at the school level (principal) and 4-5 year of county/system management experience along with a degree from a fine (brick and mortar) university, is well repected by their peers, parents and other professionals in the system. I do not know of anyone in DeKalb’s current central office staff that matches that criteria and I think it is rather basic. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that all three candidates come across as well-spoken, intelligent, visionaries for public school education and one of them will be selected regardless of race and free from corruption (then you can all call me Pollyanna). Here’s to hope.

Dodge City, Kansas loss was totally our gain. Oh how we will hate to see her go-she is nothing but wonderful. I believe that citizens of Dodge City felt the same way they also gave her glowing remarks-thats how it works-everybody says shes wonderful and then she moves on down the road!

Dr. Trotter, I am one of those “bad” ex-teachers. I presume you will admit that some teachers are “bad.” However, if one of them pays you a sum to join MACE, I hear that you will defend them against those “bad old” administrators no matter that they cannot teach. It is quite well understood across Georgia (and elsewhere) that MACE is an EMBARRASSMENT to the education profession. You do defend incompetent teachers. The only thing that MACE devours is its reputation and the innocent kids who you allow to go unprotected due to incompetent or less-than-desirable adults.

I would be careful not to make too much of the black male’s attrition rate at KIPP. The national prospects for black male academic and life success and the societal challenges posed by the bleak developmental profile of black male is s subject for immediate national discussion.
KIPP teachers and administrators are not magicians. The only place the adoloscent black male is not dropping out of is the
“client” end of the criminal justice system. It is downright foolhardy to suppose that KIPP has a special formulae to keep black males in school.
