Past domestic violence charge: DeKalb school board candidate Corey Wilson releases statement

Corey Wilson

Corey Wilson

Here is the release from Corey E. Wilson, candidate for DeKalb School Board, District 3,  in response to revelations of arrests in his past, including a 2006 arrest for domestic violence:

“I have worked to address the real issues that impact our children in the DeKalb County School System: improving our schools; and supporting our teachers. I encourage everyone to look at my complete record and focus on the big issues. Let me be clear. I have been in love with my wife since we were teenagers, and I still love her. After recently celebrating our 12-year wedding anniversary, I am committed to my family, this school board district, and winning this race. I have a history of community service that speaks for itself. Look at the lump sum of my achievements and not a just few acts.”

Wilson’s campaign provided this additional statement:

In 2006, Corey E. Wilson and his wife experienced a marital disagreement. The incident occurred just after the death of Mr. Wilson’s mother. This matter did not result in a conviction. Although, Mr. Wilson was charged all charges against him were dropped. While in college, Mr. Wilson was involved in minor legal matters which also did not result in any convictions. Mr. Wilson regrets these incidents.

Corey E. Wilson is a loving father and committed husband with a strong track record of community service. For three years, Corey served as president of the Oak View Elementary PTA where his sons are students. Corey served on the DeKalb County School System’s Strategic Planning Committee and Parental Advisory Committee. Corey founded Fathers Being Involved, a group which focused on increasing the involvement of fathers in the lives of their children. Corey is a member of the Waldrop Farms Homeowners Association and the Belvedere Civic Association. Corey and his family are active members of New Mercies Christian Church. He regularly serves as a volunteer coach in his children’s sport teams. As Operations Manager for CarMax’s Alpharetta location, Corey is responsible for managing the company’s goods, people, and assets. Corey is a graduate of Georgia State University and Georgia Perimeter College.

While I am sure Mr. Wilson has done good things, his involvement in domestic abuse is inexcusable for a member of the BOE. Blaming his assault of his wife on his parent’s death (and its attendant stresses, which most everyone has endured) is inexcusable as well.

I would wish Mr. Wilson to continue to make good things happen in his community. I am sure he has been an asset. He should not, however, be entrusted with a leadership position, IMHO.

Its up to the voters. Georgia voters are funny though. They’re about to elect a man who can’t handle money as governor.

out of here. This man can’t control himself? He makes his excuses? Can he control himself as a board member? Can he control himself to handle our budget? We need to have people who can make tough decisions without excuses.

I’ve never been arrested, but my sister was one time when she was young. Her boyfriend was driving her car, and he had an open beer in the car. They arrested her as well as him. They ended up not pressing charges against her. She graduated from college and was a great teacher for 35 years.

I have a friend whose son was at a party given by a 22 year old when he was 20. He had a beer. The police came to tell them it was too loud, and then they asked for id from everyone. My friend’s son had just a trace amount of alcohol, but that was enough to arrest him as a minor consuming alcohol. He ended up without a conviction but was on probation for a year. He’s in his late 20s now and earns a six figure income as a manager for a branch of a company where he has vastly improved their bottom line.

The point is that an arrest is not always what it appears to be. If you’re a parent with a teenager or a child in his/her early 20s, just remember that we all live in glass houses so we might not want to throw too many stones. Other people’s children including our own might be hit.

I don’t know Corey Wilson, and he is not in my district (Womack is my rep and what a fiasco that has been for our students). However, I have been following Mr. Wilson’s campaign with great interest. His ideas make sense for DCSS students. He has asked that you contact him directly so he can answer questions you may have. How many of you would ask the same consideration? Our society has become one of sound bites and snap decisions. In depth discourse seems a relic of the past.

I know Mr. and Mrs. Wilson personally and fine them both to be dedicated and upstanding citizens. Sometimes married people have disagreements and in this instance the charges were dropped and the two of them have moved on with their lives. Anyone who is or has been married knows that problems may sometimes arise in the heat of the moment. The true character of Mr. Wilson is how he has handled his affairs since.

Is Will Sellars and Georgia Capital Associates being paid by Corey Wilson to run his campaign? That’s commonplace for a state rep. or senate run, but not for a local board of education campaign.

Will Sellars and Georgia Capital Associates are smooth pro’s, and sure did a fine job writing that press release.

Wilson’s domestic dispute was only four years ago. It was enough for his daughter to call the police, and for the police to arrest him.

And here’s what Will Sellars and Corey Wilson call “minor legal matters”…three arrests in three years.

@Not Buying it, I think it is unusual to bring in professionals of any kind in school board races. However, I don’t know if Corey Wilson and his campaign spokesman are friends or acquaintances.
But I have been surprised in general this election cycle with a few school board candidates having their “reps” respond to calls or e-mails. Maybe, that is a sign that these races are becoming more high profile.

False accusations of domestic violence against men are common. Such a false accusation is domestic violence, yet police and prosecutors almost never prosecute such criminals. Credible research overwhelmingly shows that the ratio of d.v. is at least 50/50 between women & men. http://tinyurl.com/3sakk According to one study by researchers who work at the CDC, in 70% of domestic violence incidents, where the domestic violence is not mutual, it’s women who initiate the domestic violence. http://tinyurl.com/yzm9xhe The taxpayer funded domestic violence industry has largely mischaracterized the true nature of d.v. from the beginning and continues to mislead the public. D.V. law follows a gender feminist agenda/ideology over facts in evidence and does great harm to many innocent men (and also many battering women who need help) as shown in “Los Misandry” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAmOxvudpF8

V.P. Biden recently called violence against women, “the very worst abuse.” The very worst abuse is valuing one life less than another for having been born the wrong sex. Under Biden’s Violence Against Women Act the wrong sex is men. Shelter and services are virtually non-existent for male victims of domestic violence so those options out of a bad relationship, that are routinely available to women, are very often not available to men. Men wind up gender profiled and often falsely accused by the taxpayer funded, d.v. industry, because of gender feminist ideology controlling the d.v. industry. Men are often battered by domestic violence, and then battered again by the taxpayer funded, domestic violence industry.

it’s called youthful indescretion – it was spelled out in yesterday’s article – the disorderly conduct was the result of a party that had gotten too loud – the assault was on a burglar or the burglar’s accomplice (the burglary victim was Wilson’s mom for crying out loud) and his wife and step-daughter forgave him and they moved on from that – in fact, Wilson’s wife is largely the face of the campaign – desperate times call for desperate measures and our schools and education system need all the help they can get – we will have to overlook the lapses in judgement he had in the distant past

Whether it’s a local school board election with candidates with histories of violence and embezzlement or a gubernatorial candidate who probably won’t make it to Christmas before indictment, or even a recent president and vice president with three DUI convictions between them, what does it say about us that we just shrug our shoulders, hold our noses, and punch the ballots?

DeKalb County is the most Democratic voting county in Georgia and one of the most in all of America. And I wonder if eduKALB helped steer him that way. Interesting stuff.

If you are going to blog & criticize or judge, at least be respectable enough to use your real name. All these aliases allow cowards, haters and liars to speak freely.

I say we look at the body of work of an individual and not let certain circumstances cloud our judgment. While no one condones or agrees with any type of arrests or charges we all undertand the process. If a phone call is made and the police come to your home, someone will be arrested & charged.

This was a one time incident nearly 5 years ago, no guilt, the couple is still married and from what I know and see with my own eyes…very productive in the community and active with the kids.

For me, elections are about issues & facts with ragard to the office & responsibility.

So ask yourself these questions:
1. Is the candadate qualified?
2. Does he/she have a strong platform?
3. Will they be part of the current problems or part of the solution?
4. Are they active in the community?
5. Do they understand what it takes to get Dekalb where it needs to be
from an educational standpoint?
6. Can they help restore respect & dignity to the district?
7. Lastly, will any past transgressions or issues a candidate may have
gone through affect thier ability to do the job at hand?

That’s what matters to me. Right now with the existing structure, the school board is the second joke in the area, only behind Clayton County.

As far as the disorderly conduct stuff 20 years ago…..Hell, if you didn’t get too rowdy at a party in college, than woe is you for missing out on a portion of your college experience.

I’m disappointed with the news of his arrests, but he is definitely a step up from having Woods on the Board. She MUST be voted out. Two of his arrests were when he was young.

I recall at least a handful of fraternity boys in college that got arrested for various alcohol- or party-related actions who were good kids back then and are upstanding men today. I hesitate to take those arrests too seroiusly; our brains are barely fully developed in our early 20s. Who didn’t do stupid things at that age?

I listened to a Corey Wilson interview, and he praised Crawford Lewis multiple times, the same Crawford Lewis who is under indictment for a number of felonies.

The budget for the DeKalb Schools is $1.4 billion. The County budget is $500 million. What’s wrong with this picture? 42 students to a classroom in one school I heard about; 39 in another, and teachers and furloughed so ther’re fewer teaching days. There’s been serious mismanagement. At least Corey has started a program Fathers Being Involved in the County schools, and has served in the community. He tells students that the things they do now will reflect later on. He knows that, with his actions from 15 years ago. Shall we continue with the incumbent who helped build a system that has some shining beautiful new schools and some shoddy, decrepit, shameful teaching environments all at the same time? We need leadership that does not assume this gravy train goes on forever. I vote for change.

What’s really amusing about all this is that this sort of thing also keeps people out of certain professions, certain jobs. This candidate thinks he can have this background and still be elected to a public office. Sure he can, you see, it all depends on what sort of people dominate the electorate for that particular office.

I would not vote for such a man, I would not hire such a man. I would not partner with such a man, I would blackball such a man from joining my club. Simply put, I would not associate with such a man.

I’m not saying he’s a bad person, not at all. I just know very well what other baggage comes with people like this. I choose not to let such a person get close. That doesn’t mean I don’t have friends and relatives who have had problems. You can’t pick your relatives. Your friends are what they are.

I just wouldn’t get involved with somebody new (to me) with this history. Been there, done that, got the T Shirt. I’ve lived long enough to know what this kind of behavior bodes for the future.

“Sir,

We, like many of DeKalb’s residents are not pleased with the latest turn of events. However, we made what we felt was the best decision based on the information we had. We are discussing the recent turn of events and will be issuing a statement by weeks end.
