???????????? !!!

I think most have it wrong.

I am NOT a teacher but am an engineer who understands human need to excel and improve for their own souls contentment and devotion and sacrifice and the just rewards of owning what they have poured their SOULS into. I see arrows of indignity always leveled at the teachers in our "MODERN" society. I like to know I can own the methods I use to create ... and let others have the product they pay for or I give. I don't want to become "worthless" employee by so "gullibly" giving away my intimate mental methods to the others competing for my job.

I think everybody should put themselves in the Teachers shoes. When they are DEVELOPING material to Teach from in their OWN Style and CREATIVITY they have a single minded devotion to PROJECT their teaching onto the children. So they spend hours and hours and days and weekends just so that they keep ahead of the curiculum.

I don't think in any society with a conscience, that good people should wrench that away from the Teachers ... as when they take it with them they are taking their worth developed using their LIFE ENERGY and CREATIVITY which the schools or the society BARELY pay them to keep a modest home HALF going and if there is not another HALF from the spouse coming in it is a life of destitution to MANY of the teachers ... and you are TAKING all the SELFWORTH of the Teacher away from them by asking them to leave a "COPY" even, of their developed Teaching material ... those are like personal guidelines and roadmaps and attached to their self-worth soul all DEVELOPED knowing that they will NOT be pulled assunder from it when they leave or move. ELSE all teachers will REIGN IN their ENTHUSIASM and creativities and DEVOTION - and we will be DOOMED to MEDIOCRITY - and, so, it is a SMALL REWARD of "SELF WORTH" to let that go with the teacher who have undertaken this noble LIFE PATH.

Any and every teacher worth their salt should develop their own. Any school that thinks it is worth keeping the material then they should acknowledge that, THAT Teacher is also worth keeping. OR for continuity of the STANDARD they LIKE of the departing Teacher, then they should offer to PURCHASE the material from the Teacher (who will be GRATEFUL to see worth GIVEN to their work) and the SOCIETY (Local Councils and Legislatures) ALSO should SET UP a FUND or FUNDS that can be used to pay for the WORTH of any Teacher they want to BUY and USE that for their continuity of "STANDARDS" that this Teacher has contributed in raising or developing - else they should rely on the new teacher to draw their own plans, worthy of his or her own salt.

Society should leave this sense of worth to stay with the teacher who has developed it. We will have a MUCH BETTER society as new and innovative CREATIONS will mushroom from all teachers.... as it will not be regurgitations of someone else.

Teachers are considered and placed on the noblest of planes by all Indians, Hindus especially ... and this is in the genes of a civilization whether you understand - even if the mind boggels at the hidden history not in the journalistic "English" writen or conjectured history - yes, their 40,000 (noted in the scriptures and artifacts of Saraswati Civilization - now under the land leased to Pakistani people) or 7,000 or 5,000 year old evolution of civilization ... and we all humanity should for ONCE and FOR ALL ingrain it in all our humanity's genes so that NOBLER Societies are in our future.

Teachers ... you are the keepers of this society ... and not the Clerics, The priests, The Engineers, The police, The telephones, the TV's, the Internet, the politicians, ... there is no one between the child being born on this Earth to the time the wizened Elder departing who is more important, than the Teacher, and there is NO TRUER KEEPER of SOCIETY and CIVILIZATION !!! ... and so ALSO the noble standards that Teachers should keep in their lifelong passage on this Earth.

Godspeed all Teachers!

Congrats on your Teacher of the Year award...nom (french for "name"), de (french for "of"), plume (french for "feather"...you may be aware that the first pens were feathers with the "attachment points" sharpened to a point and dipped in what passed as ink).

I'm sure you are aware that Mark Twain's "real" name was Samuel Clemmons. He adopted Mark Twain as his nom de plume (name of the pen) in order to signify the "depth-finding" commands employed on the river boats on which he learned his skills of pilotage on the river.

Ole Guy, what does nom de plume mean? Thanks for that. I was just voted teacher of the year at my school. I think it has a lot to do with that and my dedication to kids and their success.

I'm the teacher quoted above who believes teachers have the right to sell their plans. An important issue not being addressed is that the teacher in the original NY Times article said she shares her plans with her colleagues but found they were good enough to sell. I absolutely agree teachers should share among colleagues and believe me, we do. I was very surprised there are schools that don't encourage this. Perhaps what people don't realize is that in most cases we're not required to create lessons - we can use the plans bought by the district. Thus, a teacher who spends her own time creating plans because she/he is looking for something more interesting, engaging, specific for different types of learners, whatever the reason, is entitled to ownership of her work. The fact that he/she is willing to make it available online allows the rest of us the option of buying it or not.

The real value of lesson plans is in the process of planning - not the final product.

If, on the other hand, Ashamed, your nom de is oriented toward those who would covet their skills to the exclusion of colleagues, perhaps your thoughts will lend cause to reconsider.

Ashamed, there is absolutely no reason to feel so...your selfless actions speak well of you, your colleagues, and your profession. Perhaps I may have misunderstood your nom de plume, for there is every reason for you to feel the pride you so amply describe.

I do agree that teachers own their lesson plans, but why are you sitting here saying that we shouldn't share the plans. We do plan for hours and hours but I think you're missing the big picture.... the kids. I don't care how long I work on plans or how long another teacher works on them, I feel it all comes back to the kids. Heck who cares.. I share any and everything with my colleagues because I'm in it for the kids. Teachers plan all these extravagant plans and want someone else to buy them, not in for the kids. That's pathetic. In my opinion you're planning for your students to succeed but all of the rest to fail. Mind you I don't want or need a plan from someone else. My colleagues and I do quite well planning our lessons.
