@mift: She didn't "friend" any of her students. Read the entire story. She was railroaded. And the superintendent will be looking for another job. He/She (the superintendent) is an idiot.

She's an adult and can do whatever she wants outside of school hours in my opinion. For a thing like 'bitch' to be offensive these days also is insane, you can hear it on television everyday in teen programmes. Stupidity at it's best here, I hope she wins.

P.S. I had more than one teacher at school using curse language in front of us and no-one cared although it was after we were 15 meaning we could see movies with cussing in them.

I am not a Lawyer, or a Teacher, I am a union electrician in upstate New York...
So, after thirty plus years, the Kansas police finally caught the BTK killer. A serial killer, whose career started around 1974. I was eight years old in 1974, and the internet, e-mail, and social networking across continents were science-fiction back then. But the internet, e-mail, and social networking across continents became reality, and after 30 plus years, the Kansas police did catch the BTK killer, because he sent an e-mail.
Sorry to get off on a tangent there, but....
Who is/was in charge of this computer that recieved this e-mail? Is there an IT person in charge of the internet system at this school? I understand, from the article above, that Ms. Payne resigned when given the ultimatum of resign or be fired over an "anonymous" e-mail, but, for real? We are trying this hard to get rid of English Teachers? Here? In the United States of America? ENGLISH TEACHERS??

I am a teacher and although I agree it is probably an "old school" teacher who was friended or somehow got access, that is not really the issue. The issue to me is-what is expected of teachers outside the school day?
My actions outside of work are affected by the fact that I am considered a role model for my students by my employer. I avoid buying alcohol in stores that my students frequent, I have a very clean Facebook page and I watch what I say in public. I am a realist. Every job has an element of politics and game-playing to it and people are sometimes fired in other fields of work for what they do in their off-time. I absolutely love my job and trying to live to a higher standard is a sacrifice I am willing to make so that my position is secure. I am not saying people should have to live differently, this is just what I am choosing to do.
As for the teacher in the case, she should not have been fired and should be compensated for her time. However, if she does get her job back, it will probably be very difficult for her.
Perhaps there should be some solid guidelines for teachers to follow as to what is acceptable. It is not fair to punish someone after the fact if nothing was said to begin with. If you are going to hold their Facebook account against them, then be really clear about it, don't hide behind an anonymous email.

Facebook is a very very unsecure Social Networking site, sighing up is almost like sighing a contract in blood! It can not be undone!! Even when you block everyone but friends from viewing your profile there are ways around it! Also if you delete your account all your information and photos still remain on the facebook server, and are considered property of facebook!! There are plenty of websites that can show you pictures from profiles that have been deleted! Also if you delete your account and then reopen it with the same email and user name all your pictures and information magically reappears!! We expect our privacy to be protected and its not!! As far as this so called "parent" I would expect that it would be a coworker with a grudge, either way though they are entirely hypocritical! Everyone curses once in awhile, and as far as facebook goes, we have a right that's protected in the first amendment aka the freedom of the press, and the freedom of speech!! What a teacher does with her private life is her decision, and certainty if she wishes to use the word Bitch online, and have pictures of herself enjoying some whine it is her constitutional right!! Maybe instead of scrutinizing the teacher we should be more worried about the parents that are not responsible enough to monitor their childs activities to protect them from things they do not want them to see!

The more stories like this I read, the more I think we are living in a police state....
The signs of a police state? Not having basic personal freedoms, having to be afraid others will make phone calls on you (or send emails) to "turn you in", being found guilty unless proven innocent (and even then you can be fired, arrested, etc.)
What has happened to American society -- it used to be famous for tolerance, respect for the privacy of others, and a relaxed, friendly attitude....
Very sad...

Mift, did you even read the article. The teacher in question never "friended" any students the entire incident has more or less no real substance as an offence against a child. I'd agree entirely with the conclusion that another teacher must have sent the email to the principle. No student could have seen her facebook page, especially under the conditions in the email.
