Teacher fight in Clayton sounds like Jerry Springer script
A messy love triangle is one thing, but a brawl in a school with expletives flying in front of students crosses a line. I don’t think the two teachers involved in Monday’s melee belong in classrooms with kids. I would not want my children in their classes. I doubt any other parents would, either.
Unfortunately, the fight between two women over a male teacher who they were both seeing occurred in Clayton County, which doesn’t need any more negative press. (The county’s tarnished reputation is not being helped by school board member Trinia Garrett who is about to go on trial for assaulting her live-in boyfriend.)
I understand that one teacher appears to be the greater aggressor here, but the alleged conduct of both in full view of students is appalling. If the police report is accurate, the incident reflects a stunning lack of professionalism . In fact, the drama sounds like a Jerry Springer script.
According to the AJC story,
The fight broke out Monday morning after the women learned they both were involved with the same male teacher, who also teaches at the school.
Cobb, who told police she is expecting a child with the man, said she found a letter from Smith on the man’s Facebook page.
“I am in love with you. I am tired of being your every blue moon [expletive],” the letter read.
Cobb responded on Facebook with a “tumultuous” message, police said.
On Monday morning, the fight moved from Facebook to the school halls. That’s where Smith approached Cobb and told her to “never do that again,” the report states.
Cobb summoned an assistant principal, but the fight didn’t stop.
Instead, it spilled into a classroom where Smith began to swing at Cobb, the report states.
Several other teachers broke up the fight and Cobb stormed down the hallway while threatening to post the letter on the blackboard.
The assistant principal told police she pulled Cobb into another classroom, with the children present, to calm her down. But Cobb continued to curse in front of the students. That’s when Smith ran into the room again and “attempted to attack” Cobb, the report states.
Police interviewed several students, who said they heard Smith yell “[Expletive], you don’t want none of this” and “get the [expletive] off me” while teachers were holding her down.
After talking to students and teachers, police charged Smith with simple assault and disorderly conduct. Cobb was charged with disorderly conduct.

-It’s because they’re black.
-Clayton is full of black people, so it must be because they’re black.
-Only black people act that way, so it must be because they’re black.
-That’s why black children grow up to act that way–because they see black adults act that way. And they’re black.
-If black people didn’t act so black then they wouldn’t do black things in front of black students. Black.

Does that about sum it up? Do you realize how stupid that sounds? Is poverty a reason? Sure. Cultural bankruptcy. Yes. A lack of value for education? Absolutely.

A white female school bus driver was just arrested for having sex with a student(a black boy), the crazy white astronaut who drove acroos the country in a diaper to confront another female about a co-worker, the white woman who drowned her four kids because she believed they were evil, and lets not forget PARIS HILTON, Lindsy Lohan, Brittany Spears,and the octomom . Yes, yes, terribly unprofessional. And when are women going to wise up? The other woman is not the problem. She didn’t promise you diddly squat. Both the women should go confront the *man,* who is the problem in their respective lives (and they should certainly wait until they’re off school property after hours to do so). Did they even bother to properly focus their anger at the one who played them against each other? No. So we’re going to know their names, and we won’t know his. They’re going to (likely) lose their jobs, and he won’t. The repercussions from this incident will follow them for a long time, and he won’t have *any*. Yeesh.

These feelings got in the way of them thinking straight. Women – take a lesson from this public exposure — for some reason – we always attack the “other women” but we don’t have a clue as what “the man” have told them. What I think is interesting is that one of the women is pregnant by this man yet they are not married, nor does it seem like that was even in the cards. What kind of example does that set for middle school children? I am in no way a prude, but I do have issues with unmarried pregnant teachers teaching impressionable young girls. This woman has a degree and will be able to provide for her child, unless of course she gets fired, but that is another story. But, her being pregnant and teaching young middle school girls give the illusion that it is easy to be single and take care of a baby.
I would never say a teacher should be fired because she is pregnant and single, I just think teachers should have more care about how what they do in their personal life can influence, even indirectly, the lives of the students they teach.
I see too many girls on a daily basis wander down my hall with huge pregnant bellies. I think at last count we have between 10-20 pregnant girls at our school and probably another 20-30 that have already had at least 1 kid. There is this celebration of babies, the kids drag their infants up to the school to “show off” their kids, but talk to these same girls 2 or 3 years from now, they are on WIC, food stamps, struggling to get by.

As an AA who taught school for 33 years, I think this is scandalous. There is no excuse for this type of behavior. My mom and dad raised all 6 of us to have a sense of pride in ourselves and emphasized that some behavior is never acceptable. The rule in our house was that you conducted yourself like a young lady/gentleman in public, and you did nothing to bring shame on the family. I know it is not the norm nowadays, but when I was growing up my parents established an order for my life: education, marriage, then children. I had to follow these rules because my parents offered no options to them. There was no way that I could have explained to my parents that I was having a baby and was not married. I have a daughter, and I raised her the same way. People can give any reason they desire to excuse a particular behavior, but I can say that in my case the old way of doing things worked well for myself and my daughter. I’ll never forget what my parents told me, and that was that in order to rear good kids, you had to set a good example, lay down the rules, and insist that they be followed.

And to man haters out there, yeah, let’s just blame it all on the big, bad, man. The two females engage in a profanity laced fight IN FRONT OF THEIR STUDENTS, and it’s the man’s fault? Of the three, the man appears to be the only one who has maintained any semblence of professionalism. He may be a cheater, and he may be a liar, but at least when he’s in school he act’s like a professional. If the ladies want to lay claim to a man, they need to marry one. Sreading your legs for a man, or even being impregnated by a man, does equate to ownership.

In my opinion, it matters not what has been going on in their personal lives or online. Just as we encourage students to rise above (or at least set aside) personal mayhem and get on with the business of learning, teachers need to TEACH. They should deal with personal and interpersonal issues away from the campus. If they can’t or won’t, they need to stay home. The foul language for me is reason enough to suspend them without pay. I hold myself to a higher standard and try very hard to present to my students an adult who understands there is a time and place for everything and that language- properly used- is a powerful tool. I don’t need to fight, swear or call people names to get my point across. . . even in the heat of anger.

He played them both, and like a fool, they confronted each other instead of taking the issue up with him, off the clock, off school property and handle your business at home behind close doors…you brought it to the publics’ eye. You have brought more shame to your family and the county is who heading in a positive direction to clean-up the tarnish name…with bull crap. Teachers are humans too. It is too bad thet the women will lose their license to teach in Georgia, but the male teacher will still have his job. Why would he date teachers who work at the same school? He shares some of the blame too. Although he was not physically involved in the fight, he is the cause of the altercation. Very embarrassing and sad. The students see enough of this at home, and they also witness their own parents attacking teachers.

If her name isAileen, she won’t become a serial killer. We can trust our teenaged boys around a teacher named Silvia. Surely she won’t get them drunk and have sex with them. Debra sounds so wholesome, so again, we can trust her not to have sex with our kids. Gimme a break! There are people that shouldn’t be teachers in all races! Discriminating based on their name is ridiculous!
This could be used as a teachable moment with the students at the school. Many of the girls today fight over boys. Seeing how this has damaged these teacher’s lives could have an impact on some of the students.

While I agree that the male teacher’s love life is no example for young men, there is no evidence that he conducted it in front of the students so I don’t see any cause for action against him. In the aftermath of the Letterman scandal, there have been many stories on the rise of workplace romances, many of which end badly. (And in the past, it’s the woman who paid the bigger price because she usually had the lesser job.)
But I think that is changing as women move up the ladder.
Having married another reporter, I can’t say that I oppose workplace dating, but it should be kept out of view at work.

Maureen, like others here, I do appreciate that you participate in the blog rather than just posting topics and ignoring everything that happens afterwards.
I’m not saying that the male teacher ought to be sanctioned professionally, just that his behavior isn’t necessarily beyond reproach, although at least he seems to have behaved professionally in front of the students.

I think the kids in Clayton deserve better than they have gotten from the adults in their system. As to V’s comment, I think some folks living in Clayton would like to relocate, but this is not the best time to sell a house or find a new job.

I think you all a making statements based on a situation that you only heard of through the media. Everything we read is not true. None of us really know what happened that day. The media stated it was a “fight”; however, only one woman got charged with simple battery. Battery means that there were no physical exchanges, there was one person’s attempt to harm another. We as educated individuals need to stop speaking on situations or making opinions about people when we don’t know the facts. Do we know what kind of lives these people lead? Do we know anything about their upbringing? Do we know if this is an example of their normal every day character? Neither parties have publicly said anything: neither women, the man or the school system, yet we are speaking on this situation like WE really KNOW the situation. What needs to happen is that we stop complaining and someone needs to pray for ALL parties involved. It could be you the next time. It could be you provoked acting out of character and the media twists your story.

Really, it seems that they could make a great reality show based on all the drama that goes on in the Clayton County School System. I doubt that even script writers could come up with the crazy shenanigans that have gone on down there. We had something similar here about 10 years ago. No black folks involved; both local white girls (we are not a racially diverse county, unless you count the Latinos). Both women kept their jobs–they were given “warnings” in their employment records. I am guessing because they were both local “products.” If they had been from “not around here”, I am guessing they would have been fired.

FulCoTeacher—– do you know how many untruths the media advertises daily. They are a business and they’re job is to get a story. We don’t know facts! Yet, you are placing judgement so quickly! I agree that educators should be placed on a higher standard; I also feel that they should be judged based on FACTS, not personal opinions and not on the media attempting to get a story. How do we know what these individuals taught their kids up until that very moment? How do we know that they are not truly making a difference in the lives of the students? How do we know students aren’t looking at the news saying “they’re lying!” that’s not what happened? I just don’t believe in placing judgement before we know that facts. I don’t think anyone outside of that building will ever know the facts because the ajc, fox 3, wsbtv all have a different spin on the story. This situation can be used to help someone. I fault the media because anyone with common sense would know that they are blowing this situation up to a level that it doesn’t need to be blown up. All we know are the events of that day. Fisticuffs as grounds for dismissal has been well established,so the two women go.I don’t know if the man can legally be fired.As far as I’m concerned he should be,but I’m not sure he can be.The system’s lawyers have to be consulted and a decision made.If the two women are still teaching there is little hope for this school district.They know not what they do.

Are you all saying if this was not a fight and only one person was swinging with “fistcuffs” then both women should be fired? A system can only judge them on what happened THAT day in THEIR building. Obviously, one person’s actions where greater than the other. Only one person received a simple battery charge. What would you do or say if someone approached you? Have you ever been pregnant (and this woman is clearly pregnant as seen on her facebook profile picture) and felt threatened? You all amuse me by placing judgement and making decisions based on the unknown. It’s Sunday morning, we all need to send up a few prayers for all parties involved and ourselves too, because no man is clear of fault. What would you do if you were provoked at your job? Do you really know what you would do in a given situation? Most of us have done worse. Most of those students in that building have seen worse. That’s not an excuse, however it is a reality. These people are human; humans make mistakes. We’re saying what should happen, the decision has probably already been made. And they are the only ones who have to live with that. If we choose to isolate one/both of them from our children we may be missing out on a beautiful teaching experience. They may be superb teachers and may be able to let students know that making one simple mistake can possibly make you loose your life line. I’m positive the system will get rid of one or both if the FACTS give them that information. However, WE don’t know facts; just we are judging an event that we did not witness. We all should know how the media blows things out of portion. It’s their job!

Jerry Springer episode it was truly, NOT. Only one person got out of control. Cobb (pregnant) responded to Smith verbally, but she never even balled up a fist and no one heard her curse. Teachers SHOULD be held to a higher standard. Especially in this state where our education system is the pits.
A department store employee would be fired on the spot. The teachers get a hearing. Ridiculous.
The things teachers can get away with and continue to teach is amazing. And if you don’t believe me, go read the recent LA Times and NY Times articles about how those districts are handling teachers they can’t or are trying to fire.

Only a fools break this rule. Yes, teachers should be held to a higher standard. They spend 7-8 hours a day in front of our children. Teachers are role models and have young minds to mold. If this happened in an office situation (adults only in the room), all 3 would have been fired. All large companies have office dating policies and would be surprised if Clayton County Schools did not have the same. I would not allow any adults that behaved like this to influence my child, and expect the school to exercise the the same level of judgement. However, Clayton County has always been a mess. Three years ago one of their principals was punished for making racist comments towards Hispanic students. She was demoted to teacher (wow). This is what is to be expected of Clayton County.
“You don’t want none of this.” How about the bad grammar? These ladies are supposed to have degrees in education 4yr or greater??? Where did they get their degrees? The poor grammar alone would have been enough for me to get upset. Which is worse is almost a toss up, the double negative or the curse words. We are living in an era where there are qualified teachers, which know how to behave in public looking for employment. Let’s flush out teachers like these and take a look at those that were laid off last year.

Citizen, Hmmm, you think the AJC is misrepresenting a police report? All I addressed is your confusion about battery (which DOES involve physical contact) and agreed that (based on the evidence of the police report alone) MOST people wouldn’t want their children in these teachers’ classes. Valid points are made that it’s not reasonable to expect that teachers should be held LESS accountable than their students for such misbehavior. Sorry, don’t think that’s “passing judgment,” just basing an opinion based on what the POLICE reported. (Not news agencies, but law enforcement.) Interviews with other teachers and students lead the police officer to file the charges. What did those women “teach” those students that morning? Hopefully, eventually, that adults will be held accountable for disorderly conduct just as students are. Maybe you should consider those facts; I’ve only read the AJC account – not scouring the news channels for more sensationalism myself.

Really? unmarried and pregnant. How many women/men do you know that have children outside of marriage. The principal has children…no husband. So, does that make her a terrible example. At least she knows her child’s father. There are so many fatherless children around.

I think it is time all involved apologize to the students, parents and fellow teachers. This incident has ruined an entire week of school and should not have ever happened! The distress these individuals caused to everyone because of their actions should not go without punishment! They should be remorseful,and more concerned with what their actions did to the school that has worked very hard to be as good as it is in Clayton County! No one deserved this type of behavior or press!Hearing remorse from either of these ladies has not happened and that is infuriating!
