Clarkdale Elementary in Austell, under water. AJC/Phil Skinner

From this shocking photo, it looks unlikely that the 450 students at Clarkdale Elementary in Austell will be back in their school any time soon.

The newspaper would love to talk to any Clarkdale parents.

If you are a parent from Clarkdale, please call AJC reporter Aileen Dodd at 770-263-3860 or AJC reporter Gracie Bond Staples at 770-263-3621. Or you can also e-mail them at adodd@ajc.com or gstaples@ajc.com

Here is an AJC update on the school and the plan to divide up students between two other Cobb schools.

Thanks

I am so sorry for all the educators. If I looked back when I was still working, I would have lost so many lessons, games, etc. They would have been irreplacable. i know they are not antiques, family heirlooms, etc., but my lessons were precious to me. I wish I had something to send those teachers. And I wish I had supplies…those cost a lot.

oldtimer, I share the exact same sentiments. I immediately thought about all the time and effort put into planning, their work on the classroom walls, materials purchased with their own money. I am sorry for all of their losses.

There is a drive to get school supplies for the Clarkdale kids at SchoolBox stores through the weekend.

My heart hurts for the students and teachers at Clarkdale. I hope that the school system has flood insurance.

The SchoolBox has agreed to accept school supplies for the kids. I think it would be great if other schools throughout the Metro area would “adopt” the teachers and take up money for gift cards to SchoolBox or other teacher stores to replace their personal teaching items. I’m a Cobb Co teacher and waiting to hear how we’re going to help the teachers…hope other Districts will do the same! Also, the office supply stores, Staples, OfficeMax, etc. could do their part and make some donations as well!

At my school, we just collected 9 boxes of supplies to donate. As teachers, we know how difficult it is to provide supplies every year. I cannot imagine if everything was gone at once. I hope that the transition went smooth, and God bless!
