In regards to the Lesson Plan, I would imagine that they provided one because of accountability. Teachers have to create detailed lesson plans. They were probably just trying to help the teachers since the speech wouldn't be available until that day but lesson plans are due in advance. Furthermore, having worked in public schools, it saddens me to think about the amount of time that is spent on pep rallies and non-academic assemblies. Listening to a presidential speech is not a waste of time. The activity has educational merit, from analyzing rhetorical skills to watching democracy in action. Besides, unlike the weekly football pep rallies, Obama's speech is just the type of pep rally that may have a lasting, positive affect on students' future. The Friday night games are over on Saturday, but the effects of dropping out of school or not taking education seriously last indefinitely.

Maureen,
Trying to talk to Georgians about Education, is like trying to talk to my dog about cats! Doesn't matter what you say, what you show, what you prove with facts, they just don't understand. It could be because many of them were educated in this God Forsaken State! Any degree of Columbia University is worth it's weight in gold! And no GW Bush never claimed to be a "smart" guy, he claimed to be a real believer in going with his gut! He was right about himself, it's just not what he learned at Yale. They tend to teach to use fact, and critical thinking to make decisions. We may not be in the shape we are in now if he had learned more there, and done less partying. He would be the first to tell you he was NO Great Student! His dad said so too!

It's not so much the message but the messenger, although I doubt he can make it thru his speech without mentioning "health care." I don't want my kids hearing or being around such a left wing liberal who says he is a christian but says we are not a nation of christians and believes in killing babies, same sex marriage and hangs out with known terrorist and thugs.

Okpulot Taha- You are a purposeful instigator, and you're words are incendiary and foul at the core. You say that you represent the Choctow Nation, but your words give you away as a deceiver. No Choctow would ever call President Obama Boy, (No person of color, any color does that) No Choctow would EVER suggest that he pick cotton "in Arizona" , to all people of color that inference is a no-no and no person of color would suggest that of another person of color.... And no person of color, who has an ounce of education would ever say he is Ignorant. You may not like him, but that certainly does not make him uneducated. Perhaps you have no idea what Harvard Law School is, or what it takes to make it to the top there...... You on the other hand, consistently show your true hand as a life form who simply exists to take up valuable air and breathe toxin into the world! A bottom dweller and I am not saying that because I back the President, I am saying it because it's very obvious to all who read your posts, that you are a fraud and filled with hatred! The Choctow are proud and dignified people, and would NEVER speak as you do! The Entire Choctow Nation, will appreciate you not sullying them this way! FRAUD!

B. Monte, Not sure I'm breathless. Most reporters I know lose their idealism about politics and politicians with the first city council they cover when they discover that the main agenda of most all elected officials is re-election.
But I would say that the politicians who make it as far as the U.S. Senate and certainly the White House are bright. (I would not say the same thing about the House, and that goes for both sides of the aisle.)

Michael, I second your comments at 4:50 p.m.

People like Ms. Downey - i.e., the entire MSM - are so smitten with Obama's style that they overlook his entire lack of substance. An empty suit, indeed.

I mean, in her response to my previous post, Ms. Downey sounded just like one of those breathless "Entertainment Tonight" reporters who was granted an "exclusive" interview with Brad Pitt.

BTW, Ms. Downey, I'm still waiting for you to condemn the liberals who question President Bush's intellect. You wouldn't want to damage your "credibility" ... would you?

B. Monte, No doubt about it. President Bush also has impressive credentials, Phillips Academy, Yale and Harvard. I would never pretend that wasn't an incredible lineup.

I am not exactly what you would call an Obama supporter. That said, I don't think that I can condemn the man's speech on education without hearing it first.
