I am also a proud mother of a Spelman freshman. We hail from Florida where she had several opportunities to attend schools here and we even paid the deposit, but when she received the letter from Spelman, her decision was made w/out reluctance. One thing we have to realize is that CRIME IS EVERYWHERE, not just in the so called "black community". While I'm always concerned about her safety. I have to trust that my daughter will make the right decisions as taught in orientation about safety both on an off campus. It's my hope that the AUC community will review their policies and make adjustments accordingly so something like this doesn't happen again. I will certainly stay on top of it to make sure of that and I hope that all parents of students will do the same, whether it's Spelman, Clark, Morehouse, GSU, Virginia Tech, Columbine or Yale (etc). I also would think that the city of Atlanta and surrounding areas would do more to protect it's college students who bring in large sums of dollars to the area.

To Lee: I attend the University of Arizona and I live in a white neighborhood. However I feel less safe here than I do in New York City where I’m from. And a look at the crime statistics prove me right. People here like to blame the illegals or any other minority but the truth of the matter is a large portion who commit these crimes are white. If I grew up here, maybe I would have a biased view like you do, but at least I can look at it from a higher standpoint: Drugs and poverty. Tucson is not a rich city and the meth addicts tend to be white and male. And they commit tons of crime! But it’s never on the news.

College campuses tend to attract crime, from outside and inside. At the college I went to previously there were white students selling drugs. It was in a white town and the majority of crimes (thefts, robberies etc) were committed by whites. So it’s not just those in a “predominantly black” area.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you Ann for such honest and unbiased commentary. I have a daughter who attends Spelman college and I chose Spelman because of the security aspects of its campus. Surely I realize that the campus is not a vaccum and there are time when she will need to leave the comfort of it's gated community. It scares me to know that she was within such close distance to where this incident happened. But, I realize that this could have happened anywhere in America and on any college campus. Unfortunately this beautiful young lady had to loose her life as a result; fortunately there weren't any other lives lost that night. Perhaps BravesFan79 is unaware of, or care not to acknowledge the multiple deaths that occur on non-historical black colleges that we read about so often. If one were to look back on all of the murders that have occurred on college campuses over the past 5 years, they would find that only a fraction of those murders involved Black victims or that the perputrator was Black...just facts...

The problem is that we are too soft on crime here in Atlanta. The same people keep committing violent crimes then getting let out on bond again and again, even if they are arrested for murder! Then they go out and murder or rape or rob somebody else and everybody acts surprised. Even the judge acts surprised when she gives somebody already out on bond another bond! We need more cops on the street in Atlanta, period. But they keep spending money on museums and libraries instead of public safety. The people who do this cannot legally be sterilized but it doesn't have to be easy for them to continue to have kids. We have got to cut back on welfare. If people know that they can get a check for doing nothing, they are going to do exactly that! And the more kids they have, the more money the get. We need to put a stop to this now. These folks don't need kids b/c they won't take care of them and they end up being problems themselves.

Just for the record, there were some students robbed at gunpoint at Georgia Southern a few months back, but I don't think the AJC covered it.

Just this morning, there was a GSU student robbed at gunpoint.

http://www.ajc.com/news/atlanta/gsu-student-robbed-at-132999.html

How many times have we read about Ga Tech, GSU, and other college students getting robbed and/or assaulted in the past few months. A bunch.

How many West GA College, GA Southern, or hell, even UGA students have you read about in that same time?

Let's face it, Atlanta, like most other urban areas with a predominately black population is a breeding ground for crime.

And those of you who are trying to allude to this being a "Southern" phenomia, might I point out Detroit, Chicago, Cincinatti, Philadelphia, ad infinteum [sic].

Meanwhile, another young woman killed over the weekend in another senseless shooting.

Meanwhile, Chicago has announced a plan to attempt to stop some of the violence on its streets. They've developed a profile of students most likely to get shot - I'm not sure if this is also a profile of those most likely to do the shooting, but such a profile would undoubtably be interesting and would quite possibly be helpful in combatting such violence in other urban areas.

It's a sad but true statement that most college kids feel the same about their campuses as they do about their houses -- they simply don't think that bad things can happen to them there, and they're not as cautious about their safety as they might be. I think it's especially true when the students are from safe suburban areas and they're going to school in an edgier urban setting.

Ditto previous posters on the fact that 12:30 a.m. isn't late at all for a college student on a weekend night. On my own college campus in a very small town in the Midwest, the last shuttle bus on the weekends ran at 2:30 a.m., and there were still plenty of people who missed it and had to call security or a cab to get them back to their dorms. They're not asking for trouble if they're out that late on campus; they're just following the social norm and would, at most schools, have plenty of other kids out and about with them.

My prayers are with this young woman's family and the Spelman community.

I agree with people here. South has a serious crime problem. Black on black crime is higher in the south than anywhere else in the country. But, let me remind deluded white folks like BravesFan79 about the white on white crime where one young white man, Guy Heinze, kills seven white people in a home not too far from Atlanta. How conveniently he forgets that Guy Heinze is white. Southern white culture is immoral based on bigotry and racism and violence in the south will not subside until bigotry and racism subsides. Southern culture, black and white alike, is extremely violent.
