It makes sense to school administration to beat children with disabilities because we have proof that does not address disabilities but it does make them feel less frustrated and does not cost money. Instead of doing sensory diets, auditory integration training, ABA, sensory integration occupational therapy, oral motor therapy, speech therapy for pragmatic language and/or seek out all the therapies, technologies and methodologies proven to improve behaviors and give children with disabilities coping skills to over come their disabilities. We just lock the children in a closet and/or beat them. Makes sense to all the PHD’s and master degree educated experts who have taxpayer paid lawyers to fight any parent who disagrees. Besides what does society want from these children? Maybe helping them to become functioning independent adults? That is the IDIEA 2004 law but if a child can make minimal progress and you can beat them into sitting in a locked room or stay quite in the corner of a classroom that is good enough.

Child buttock-battering vs. DISCIPLINE:

Child buttock-battering for the purpose of gaining compliance is nothing more than an inherited bad habit.

Its a good idea for people to take a look at what they are doing, and learn how to DISCIPLINE instead of hit.

I think the reason why television shows like "Supernanny" and "Dr. Phil" are so popular is because that is precisely what many (not all) people are trying to do.

There are several reasons why child buttock-battering isn't a good idea. Here are some good, quick reads recommended by professionals:

Plain Talk About Spanking
by Jordan Riak,

The Sexual Dangers of Spanking Children
by Tom Johnson,

NO VITAL ORGANS THERE, So They Say
by Lesli Taylor M.D. and Adah Maurer Ph.D.

Most compelling of all reasons to abandon this worst of all bad habits is the fact that buttock-battering can be unintentional sexual abuse for some children. There is an abundance of testimony, educational resources, documentation, etc that can easily be found by doing a little research on "spanking".

Just a handful of those helping to raise awareness of why child buttock-battering isn't a good idea:

American Academy of Pediatrics,

American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry,

Center For Effective Discipline,

PsycHealth Ltd Behavioral Health Professionals,

Churches' Network For Non-Violence,

Nobel Peace Prize recipient Archbishop Desmond Tutu,

Parenting In Jesus' Footsteps,

Global Initiative To End All Corporal Punishment of Children,

United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

In 26 countries, child buttock-battering is prohibited by law (with more in process). In fact, the US was the only UN member that did not ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Tina. Not sure what is happening to your comment. I just checked the filter and it wasn't there. I posted a message to you about an earlier comment that did not post due to length on another entry here and suggested that you break the message in two. (In that same message. I noted that you were responding to a comment that was not made by me as moderator of this blog, but someone who posts using my name as part of their screen name.
So please to post again,

Dear I wonder....I am pretty sure that I have no more experinences that could have been better, than any other parent. However, I am an educated and active parent simply wanting to exercise the laws given to us parents who have children in the education process. I have seen many children and their parents at BOE meetings pleading and begging the powers to let their child attend another school, or they are appealing a tribunal decision. I've seen parents and students beg to get the same opportunities as other kids at other schools, and I have seen how some parents and children are treated. I have seen special ed kids and their parents in tears because the school system will not comply with IDEA mandates. I have seen where some of the schools where poor kids go are smelly and look like bunkers without windows in the front office. I have seen closets that are called classrooms where disabled and wheelchair bound kids are serviced. I have seen the hallways of disabled kids compared to the hallways of regular ed kids.
I will tell you want I am.....a public servant, USAF veteran, and I have two degrees and understand the concept of DIFFUSION of RESPONSIBILITY. If I buried my head in the sand and believed that the world is better because a utilitarian philosophy runs rampid in our society instead of Kantian than I could and would remain silent and I would not care about the education process and well being of others. In fact, I joined the USAF to protect the USA, because I believe all people are entitlted to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I don't expect people to quite understand ultruism in this society of "every man for himself." However, I know there are other public servants, besides myself, who are able to understand Kantian philosophy and know why it is vital that people speak out and not wait for others to. That my friend would be avoiding my responsibility to myself and the God I grew up knowing. If you still wonder why, then it is likely that we are merely from other cultural backgrounds and have different values, but that is OK, because this is actually about the children, who actuallly belong to their parents. ,

Wow Kathy....you must have had some bad experiences. From my experience as an educator parents are the ones with all of the control because it is not the principals and DEFINETELY NOT the teachers. Are you a parent that has had a run in with a certain school system?
