Graduation rates will improve once we give teachers less money, days and respect. Or am I wrong. Just kidding! It's sad time for Georgia education.

AHA - and it is "it's" not "its," as you are writing a contraction.

How pitiful that NOBODY seems to have passed 5th grade English in this entire country. I'm appalled.

Education is the PARENT's responsibility and not my problem or the state's problem. Also, why should I pay for public education when I have no children anyway? Especially when apparently a large majority of the children in public school have no interest in getting an education anyway?

Color me sick of the nanny state where citizens refuse to take responsibility for their own lives.

In response to "Teachers in Dekalb County learned that our “raise” was going to be used to fund some “America’s Choice” initiative, an initiative that cost millions of dollars, and no one from the county could actually articulate what it was. "

That's not entirely true. Although it is true that no one can really articulate the program - the money comes strictly from TItle 1 funds - not from funds that pay teachers.

We have a graduation Crisis? Yes! Because of Social Promotion. No child should pass 5th grade w/o passing the Math CRCT. But schools push over 95% of them along. Kids learn very fast that they don't have to do a thing to get into HS. Then they are screwed when getting there.

What about the Graduation Coaches? Georgia is the only state that poured into this effort and the results are showing. This rate is up considerably from it's previous 70%

I've been reading some of the old history books whose copyrights have expired and can be down-loaded as pdfs. I've lost count of how many people earned money to pay for college by teaching K-12, and then went on to do great things. And, in retrospect, it appears to have been a big error to ditch classical Greek, Latin and Hebrew grammar from the basics. I think the curriculum planners failed to grasp the synergies that arise from a strong foundation in these easier (fewer irregular forms) languages, music, OT1H, on development of skills and talent in higher math, science, engineering and software design, OTOH.

Nowadays it's hard to find a job because of the recession. There are many got unemployed and seeking job now. As a worker, I am also a blood donor to help on my daily needs. I think this is a very big help for the students who are seeking for a part time job now or got unpaid internship and especially it is summer time which are some of us need extra income. I'm donating for 2 years now and it really helps because every donation I make up to $50/hour for blood donation. As we all know, Blood bank shortages kill tons of people all the time and it is the time to spread the word about blood donation and give blood, you will never know when YOU might need blood. This really helpful even it is just a part time job, the bottom line of this is to saved lives.

If you are thinking to be a blood donor and looking for specific blood banks and a directory of blood donation centers you can check it out here at bloodbanker dot com/banks.

As was previously mentioned, not all states count graduation rates in the same way. Since Ga. elected to use the Graduation rate as one of its AYP measurements, we have a stricter guideline to report graduation rates. Every student who enters 9th grade counts for or against the rate at the school in which they started. If a student drops out in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade they count against the school. If a student leaves and never attends another school they count against the school. States who did not chose graduation rate as one of their AYP standards, do not count in the same way. Some states determine their graduation rate based on the 12th grade only. If we couldn't only the students who entered the 12th grade and graduated in that year, we would not be anywhere near a "crisis". There are of course a myriad of other reasons for our poor performance, but statistics don't always tell the story.
