"Down here", we were given October 12th, January 4th, and March 15th as furlough days. Our money was taken over a 4-month period from September to December to lessen the crunch. It is now January 2010, and we were told last month to anticipate at least three more additional furlough days this year! With news of the first set of furlough days, I was okay because three days without pay wouldn't kill me, and it would help get our budget in check. But now. . . with news of additional days, I'm not so willing to lose more money. The bottom line though, is that thank God, I have a job!

To "Tired of Whining"...here is the correct math: $62,565/190 days = $329.03 per day x 3 days = $987.08. That IS the correct pay cut. As has been explained over and over, the contract is for 190 days. A 3 day furlough cuts 3 days of contract pay.

Can you do simple math?

Sonny has already balanced one state budget entirely on the back of education--no teacher has seen a raise around here for--I don't knowhow long--way too long--we haven't had one of any consequence in 15 years. Don't forget that funding for education has been reduced every year for around a decade. There is very little left to cut. Georgia was and will remain very far behind the national average for teachers' salaries even if this furlough thing had never been introduced. Here's the fun political part: Sonny can still maintain that salaries are untouched--this is a bit like the "raise" he gave us for the past two years: you get 1.5% but it won't start until six months into the year. Sonny calls that a 1.5% raise, I call it a .75% raise. No matter--even that pittance is gone.

Here's something you can take to one of your insolvent banks, Sonny: you get what you pay for. So scratch your fat bald head and wonder why things are the way they are--but it's entirely your doing. Keep it up. As long as Alabama and Mississippi remain in the union--you have little chance of becoming much more than the national disgrace you already are.

I suggest that Georgia teachers take their "furlough days" to the state house. Be there, be visible, be loud. Get in their way. The gov's buddies have what they came for--get yours, too.

Why doesn't the DOE layoff all of the retired consultants collecting a paycheck and retirement? Do away with any new initiatives until this crisis is over. No initiatives-no consultants needed.

Furloughed due to qualifications and years, I was lucky to find another job..I hope. One answer- go to four day weeks; it'd be simple to comopact what we do in the classroom. Also, do away with some of the excessive positions and big salaries "at the top." Don't even get me started on coaching and admin. supplements. In one system, the administrators made a hujge sacrifice- they gave up ONE PERCENT of their administrative supplement. A last suggestion: qui8t adopting books so often. The average textbook lasts longer than the adoption period allotted, and we wind up tossing usable books or just storing them somewhere. There are lots of areas we could trim, but the people at the top might get uncomfy.

Buford City is doing 5 days…..2 preplanning, a teacher workday, no pay for one of the Thanksgiving holidays and another day before December 31..they anticipate more days to be thrown out 2nd semester and want to try to avoid it if possible….it seems overboard, but keeps teachers in school 2nd semester to get ready for spring testing…
