Few limits on reimbursements for Atlanta City Council members

An analysis of Atlanta City Council records shows taxpayers picked up the tab for nearly $29,000 in spending that promoted Councilwoman Cleta Winslow’s name in the final weeks before last year’s council elections.

According to political watchdog Jim Walls, the shopping list included jazz musicians, a disc jockey, an inflatable bouncer, a popcorn machine and other equipment, plus $8,000 worth of barbecue and side dishes, for events Oct. 17 and 24 last year. Read more of the AJC investigation.

These city council folks are as crooked as the rest of the politicians it looks like. What a surprise!! I hope somehow this ends up as more than a short blog entry, but I have a feeling this will be swept under the rug as usual. A challenge to some of you out of work folks who are tired of people who have jobs they don’t deserve, taking advantage of you as a taxpayer: make this a private crusade. Who knows, maybe it will lead to something for you down the road. Be careful, though. Corruption infuses a large part of government, and a lot of people might not like you rocking the boat. But do it anyway! I and many others who are too busy would appreciate you taking time to combat this type of waste and fraud.

How is it when the City was laying off workers and slashing department budgets, the Atlanta City Council didn’t cut a dime from their personal slush funds to take trips around the country to do what? Name one initiative that any one of them has brought back from the National League of Cities or any other junket they claim is related to city business? Most on the council are responsible for approving the atrocious Park Atlanta contract and other policies keeping Atl mired in blight, no new businesses, and increasing crime. Unless you’re a developer, you can’t even get in contact w these folks. That is until the next election.

WOW Cleta Winslow’s goose is cooked! And the kicker to me is that she “spoils her people with food.” $13,000 is a lot of money, and I can think of so many things that money could have done for a public project that I’ve been wanting to implement…to benefit people in her neighborhood.

The Voters of Atlanta will continue to get exactly what they deserve, until we start elected competent and ethical leadership. The fact that Kasim Reed was elected in light of the fact that he was a continuation of Shirley Franklin’s inept leadership, is most disturbing. Maybe gays will wake up and realize that Kasim Reed was never going to punish the crooked officers that terrorized citizens at an Alanta gay nightclub. Cleta Winslow, CT Martin, and Joyce Shepard are an embarrassment to the city and unfit to serve.
