Joe Martin protests GOP flyer attacking him as ‘radical liberal’

Politics as usual or over the top? Get Schooled blogger Maureen Downey reports Democrat Joe Martin, who is running for state schools superintendent,  is unhappy with a flyer being sent out by his GOP opponent John Barge.

The flyer calls Martin “Obama Liberal Joe Martin” and an “Unqualified Radical Liberal” and charges that Martin has spent no time working in public schools.

“This flyer is a throw-back to the hard-nosed tactics of attacking one’s opponent by hurling epithets and playing to fears, ” says Martin in a mass e-mail.

To me, it seems that Barge is playing to the audience dissatisfied with President Obama, as are most Republican candidates this election season. The flyer seems like typical Georgia politics.

how can you possibly be radical and liberal at the same time? its like being a passive extremist, its not possible? Barge’s campaign manager should be fired for being stupid.

This sort of ad hominem attacks based on guilt by extremely remote association is an appeal to the lowest form of prejudice and unreasoning kneejerk response. To associate Roy Barnes and Joe Martin with the most negative impressions of President Obama based purely on being in the same party is just absurd.

nikita – AWFUL comparison. You can be very radical and liberal at the same time. Do you not understand what a liberal is? It doesn’t sound like it.

Roy Barnes and Joe Martin are radical liberals and they both proved it by suing their own state. Barnes promoted the radical liberal ideology of illegals should vote and Martin wanted to redistribute wealth from rich school systems to poor school system just because the rich ones could raise more money for their cuts. They both sound like Obama radical liberals to me.

A classical definition of a liberal is someone who believes power should be centered at the national levvel. Democrats (Aka the party of liberals) embrace that belief in the United States. Joe Martin also strongly advocates this stance, thus he is a classical liberal. Thus it begs the question: “why would Joe Martin run as a Liberal Democrat (Not unlike President Obama) and then be angry when it is pointed out. Sorry, this is not dirty….It is simply pointing out the truth.

Try a little logic next time Mr. Martin. You might also want to explain your ideas regarding your paper, written in 2004 where you claim we should raise taxes. But when you re-wrote this paper to run for Superintendent in 2009 you forgot to mention this idea again….Once again, the classic definition of a Liberal Big Govt (More taxes) and National control.

You obviously don’t understand political theory. A classical liberal supports a laissez faire market place, a high degree of freedom, and individualism. Obama and other democrats are reform/progressive liberals. Please do your research. Unfortunately, most don’t, which is why the term liberal has been so distorted.

Let’s just cut to the chase….your politician is no more right or righteous than mine. Barnes vs Deal or Barge vs Martin……..is any one really that much better or worse than the other?

@ Scholar, Where did you get your degree in Political Science? Devry? In no textbook or academic journal is there a definition of an American Liberal defined by an attitutde of Laissez Faire toward the market place. No, instead the American Liberal is defined by their desire to regulate the free market place. Not really sure how you came up with this spin but I will give you an “A” for trying. That would be the actions of a truel liberal; reward your individualism – even when grossly wrong. Further investigation will also clearly demonstrate to you and others who fail to engage in the market place with any degree of intellectual honesty is the concept that your claims of individual freedom many times do trample on my rights….but the depth of that understanding might be a tad too deep for casula cocktail hour liberals who love to act like Robin Hood. That is what Joe Martin hopes to do with his lawsuit of the school system.
