Handel’s tab for Palin’s visit: More than $100,000

The day before losing a brutally close Republican gubernatorial runoff to Nathan Deal, f0rmer Secretary of State Karen Handel had what seemed the perfect closing argument: A personal visit and rally with Sarah Palin.

But, the next day the former Alaska governor and Republican megastar was gone and Handel lost by fewer than 2,500 votes.

The cost of bringing Palin and her family to town? More than $100,000.

Handel’s campaign paid an Ohio jet charter service nearly $92,000 and her latest campaign finance report shows it was for the Palin event. Handel also paid an additional $13,000 in expenses to the InterContinental Hotel in Buckhead for the event.

Handel’s quarterly report shows her campaign committee to be $28,000 in debt, with another $55,000 in deferred expenses still outstanding.

Doesn’t matter who someone is for – the fact remains that Palin isn’t into all of this because she is patriotic; she is greedy. And when are her kids in school if they are flying all over with her?

They are simply reporting GOP money being spent as if it were nefarious. It is not news.

Similar “article” about Handel paying for Palin to visit during her campaign. Again, not news (it happened a while ago).

Hey, Lawrence and Ralph, Barnes hasn’t filed yet. When he does we’ll report it. And Ralph it is news because it’s the first time the information has been available. We never reported that Palin was being paid to come. As far as we know, and as far as Handel’s reports show, she wasn’t.

@Ralph, I don’t think it’s being reported as some nefarious purchase, I think it’s being reported as, “Holy cow Handel had to PAY for Palin to help her lose the election!?”

Palin is a train wreck and Handel should have ignored her. She lost my vote for trying play the “Palin card.”

Hilarious, that the Democrat AJC reporter comes on here to pretend he was reporting “news”.

And Us vs Us pretending Handel ever had his vote, and only lost it because Palin “is a train wreck”.

The Intercontinental is a really nice hotel but how could it possibly have cost $13000? And $92000 for a charter flight? I’ll admit I’m not a fan of Sarah, but even if this article were about a candidate I really liked I would still be wondering what they were thinking. Especially if they campaign for fiscal responsibility.

You’re telling a big, fat lie when you say Michelle O’Bama hates being first lady. Her actions show she loves the job, and she’s the most productive, attractive first lady we’ve had in a long time. Those of you who are spreading lies that First Lady O’Bama hates the job must be ignorant Republicans; no one but other ignorant Republicans would believe you. It’s well known that Republicans are ignorant — look who you’ve elected — nothing but dumb@$#es and thieves.

@ Big A: $92K is for the plane & Palin’s appearance fee. Conveniently wrapped into one payment and, shockingly, it equals exactly $105,000 when “expenses” are added into it.

The real travesty is that someone thought it was a good use of donor money. I know common sense ain’t common, but this is just ignorant! The campaign manager/strategist should never get another job and Handel should personally be on the hook for whatever money she is short and/or her campaign is in debt.

Always be wary of someone willing to spend so much for a job “earning” so little. Think of it this way, would anyone be willing to spend $100,000 in order to get a job being the local middle school basketball coach? $50,000 to be a teller at the bank? $25,000 to be the bartender at Chili’s?!?

Agree or disagree with the politics makes no difference, but the spending is sheer idiocracy!

@ Margaret01 says: “she’s the most productive, attractive first lady we’ve had in a long time.” Careful hun, this is not the most thoughtful of comments. I’m not sure that “attractive” has a category when grading a 1st Lady and “productive” is usually subjective. Saying that, I doubt Mrs. Obama truly hates being the 1st Lady. The perks have to make the headaches worth it.

As for calling Republicans ignorant due to electing dumbarsness & cheats, well, pretty sure the Democrats have an equal track record. And THAT is what the problem continues to be. 2 parties filled w/folks willing to spend OUR money for propaganda. To convince us that they are the right ones who will use common sense and hold our best interests at heart. Willing to spend millions for jobs that pay thousands and we “expect” that to be normal?!? Trust that they are getting something other than the opportunity to “serve” their communities..

Karen Handel was the best choice for Governor we had. Now the corrupt GAGOP has a mess on it’s hands, with a candidate who may or may not be indicted before the election. Usually the people critical of Palin are people who do not have the balls that she does… that’s to be expected, we live in a culture that promotes wimpdom, as evidenced by the slew of men in this state who are afraid to vote for a woman. In fact women state wide were treated horribly by them old tired dogs in the party. We have county elected officials, state elected officials, and GOP chairs, who participated in truly disgusting behavior in order to embarass and destroy candidates.

I have no longer patience for the GAGOP. They will never ever get a dime from me. F’em and the mule they rode in on.

Count me in the newly formed independent and pissed off, group who will work tirelessly to
oust the chairmens of several county GOP’s. Many many new and old state reps should also be exposed and dealt with for their part in this debacle. They and their shady deals with Deal have cost the state of Georgia. Unforgiveable.

If Karen Handel was stupid enough to think that spending 100k on Palin was a good use of money, imagine what she would do with the state’s budget? And only in Georgia would a former Congressman who was charged with ethics violations now be the GOP candidate for Governor. Georgia ranks 1st in prison population and last in education. Anyone see a correlation between the two? Gov. Perdue promised to not accomplish much. He set the bar low and achieved his goal. Time to get rid of any his appointees and get this state moving into the 21st century.

Karen Handel ran a campaign based on the fact she is female. She was not qualified to be the CEO (Governor) of Georgia – she didn’t even go to college. Her polling leaped when Sarah Palin endorsed her, because Palin in enormously popular. Spending $100K for the media event of bringing Palin to Georgia was probably good money spent which almost got Handel the GOP nomination. Thankfully, it didn’t quite work. But all of the Palin haters posting here that it was stupid to use her are ignorant of the fact that it almost worked.
